Hard topics if you're new to/suck at Calc, but Justin is your best bet for MATH220. Very straight-forward with every lecture and preparing for tests; friendly and helpful (both in-class and during office hours). DEFINITELY TAKE IT WITH HIM!
Passionate about teaching, not burnt out like other teachers, extremely good at making the material easy to understand. Even sends email on a regular basis. However since he's such a good teacher there arent very many curves cause everyone seems to do well in his class.
Very energetic effective teacher. He makes sure everyone understands the material, his tests are just like his sample exams that he goes over in class.
Justin is an awesome teacher. He is nice, fair and very helpful if you ask him for it. His explanations are clear and to the point plus he prepares you well for all the exams. He's your best bet for a math teacher.
Cool and nice guy from somewhere in Europe? Good math teacher.
Make sure you take him and not a TA. taking this difficult class is worth it.
such a good teacher I took him for two semesters, and I'm planning on taking another class from him in the spring, he's a hottie too :)
the tests are usually harder than the material you will learn. he's a good teacher but the tests are ridiculous for someone who doesn't think in math terms
Justin is an excellent teacher. Justin has the habit of writing EVERYTHING he verbalizes on the board. He has a sense of humor, while also teaching effectively. Justin always hands out 3 practice exams before each tests and frequently emails student (as a whole/personally) to update students on problems/those who need help.

Justin is amazing at explaining even the hardest concepts. He makes math fun and is a wonderful teacher. I really got a lot of his class.
Justin is the HOTTEST prof ever!!!!!!! Completely drop dead gorgeous!!! I have never had perfect attendance in a class, but I definately did his. Amazing teacher too. SO helpful will make you understand the material no matter what. and whats better than the fact that he is SO HOT!!!! and he rides a motorcycle.
Justin is all that is man, visit his office hours, make sure you understand his material, if not, go to him to understand it, he will gladly help. His notes are brilliant and the work load is decent. Nothing too heavy, nothing to light. Make sure you get him, not a T.A.
This teacher is very good at understanding the classes thought process that go into learning the material. It seems he begins at the most basic root of a problem and then can take you to a level of math you are amazed you understand.
JUstin is soo0o0o0o0o AWESOME!!! i mean AWESOME!!! he is the best math teacher you will ever have! He explains concepts really welll!! if i had not taken this class with him i probably would have failed! He can be easily reached and SOOOOO willing to help! he is also very fun to look at! ;) Definetly take this class with him!!
Amazing guy!! take him !
amazing teacher!! really chill about pretty much everything... gives you plenty of time to the HW. chika is an amazing TA too. she seems really tough in the beginning but she really is a great TA. try to get her. i didnt go to class often but when i did it was totally worth it to hear his sexy accent.
probably the best math teacher i've had in college. Explains everything very thoroughly and it is so easy to take notes from. However, it wasnt an easy class for me because i transferred calc 1 in. from what i here its much easier if you take 220 at umd.
He's one of very few not to bore you among UMCP math department faculties. He seems to completely understand materials before coming to class and knows what you need to learn. Whatever the course he's teaching, I'd take it.
Manages to make complex mathematical concepts make perfect sense. You walk away feeling like you know stuff. He's very considerate of his students and is especially helpful when you need to ask him questions.
Best professor ever! Gives sample exams before actual exams. No online hm in math240. Reasonable exams and final- however your only grades are exams, final, and quizzes. I would highly recommend this teacher- answers questions, sense of humor, and explains concepts well.
CHOOSE THIS GUYS CLASS. Read this story and you will know why. So me and my buddy are taking Math 220 over the summer. He gets literally All D's on his 3 exams and a 33% on his final. What grade does he end up with? An F? no, A D? no, A C? no, He gets a freakin B-. He's just that awesome of a guy. even if you do bad as long as u try, your good.
the best MATH prof. EVER ! and AMAZING guy ! great personality ! moreover, he has a motorcycle !!!
Best professor ever. Explains everything, collects homework but it will only help you for tests and gives you a chance to boost your grade. He really just wants you to succeed and will help you in any way he can.
This professor is wonderful. His passion for mathematics is contagious. He presents his lectures in an interesting way, and he is well organized. He assignes a reasonable amount of homework and goes over it in class in such a way that it is actually helpful in systematically reinforcing our understanding of what we have covered in class. Best ever!
Okay. So I never had this guy's class. But I just wanted to say he is fascinating. Met him in Thailand (River Kwai!)where he and I were backpacking. Wished I had spent more time with him, but oh well... I can't believe this guy, so laid back, so worldly, and so good-looking, is an educator. Well, then again, so am I. :)
I don't think Justin can actually get bad ratings. He's just awesome. You have to go to his class not because he takes attendance or gives quizzes but because his notes are the most helpful things ever for hw and exams. He's pretty understanding and helps out as much as he can. Webassign sucks but he grades pretty fairly on everything.
Justin is a really good teacher. He takes the time to explain everything, but not in a way that is condescending or overly simplified. You can ask him questions whenever. He's a really nice guy and he's funny, so he makes a normally boring and difficult subject interesting and fun =)I hated math before this class, but now I kind of like it ^_^
A very helpful, understanding pro. Really cared about the students and their grades. The best pro I ever had
Justin is probably the best profesor you will have at Maryland. Not only are his lectures incredibly thorough, but they are also very easy to understand, as is most of the material taught in the course (provided you attend lecture. But then again, why wouldnt you?)Great professor. I highly recommend him!
Best math teacher I've ever had! He explains everything so well! Usually I just don't go to math classes & teach it to myself since I can't learn it by being told how, but I went to his lectures because he could actually explain math & made it easy to learn! He wrote up the final & it was a bit difficult but do-able if you study enough.
The best math teacher ever!! He made everything so much easier to learn, and he actually made math fun- if that is even possible.
A lot of teacher are noob but Justin is pro.
a great teacher, very clear, fun to be in his presence. Definately fight tooth and nail to get Justin as a prof. The key to a great grade is paying attention in lecture, going to dicussion (for the quizzes), REVIEW SESSIONS the lecture before the exam...and you MUST do those annoying webassigns!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
best math teacher i've ever had. explains everything clearly and writes everything he says on the board. get him as your teacher if you can. exams are pretty hard but he goes over sample exams the class before the actual exam.
Definitely take Justin for Calc. He makes things very easy for you to understand (and will be glad to help you if you don't). Gives us sample exams which is incredibly helpful. All-around cool guy and awesome teacher. You won't need the textbook.
Amazing teacher... Hard not to do well. Drops 3 quizzes... drops 6 homeworks.. tests are easy and straight forward. TAKE HIM.
Justin is wonderful. He is an interesting and energetic teacher. You do not need to get the textbook.
Nice Approachable teacher who teaches the information very well.
Justin was really great...his teaching style is great and he goes at a great pace, making sure everyone understands before progressing
Justin is an amazing teacher! I signed up for his class this semester because of all the reviews and everyone is right, amazing. I never missed a class and I feel that it would be a lot harder if I did because he explains it so well, you dont even need your book! AWESOME!
Take this class. I'm horrible at math but Justin explained it so well that I could semi-understand it. He's a really personable guy. Even though attendance isn't mandatory, its really helpful to go to discussion.
He is a really good prof. If taking 220, definitely need to have him. Drops a few quizzes and hws at the end, so don.t stress too much. Recommend the book tho, it helps. You will find you will want to attend lecture
Best math teacher I've ever had in my life
One of the best math professors I've ever had.
Great professor and highly recommended! makes Calculus fun and easy:) you can literally do nothing and walk out with at least a B! :)
Justin is a fantastic teacher and a really nice guy. I dont think that he could make calculus any easier.
Justin made the class easy and fun, and makes himself very available for help. He also has a great sense of humor (and a cute accent) so its hard not to pay attention in his class. Best math professor ever.
Best college professor ever. Knows how to teach with clarity and actually cares about students and tries to teach everyone unlike many other lazy professors who just weed out weak students. Many students get A's and B's because of his aptitude for teaching and he has no inane grade quota/curve based on failing grades like other professors do.
Justin is an excellent professor, easily that best that I've ever had. His class is easy, but not because he dumbs the material down. No, it's because he's an extraordinarily gifted teacher who manages to convey the information in an engaging manner. Highly recommended.
Excellent teacher. Made all the information really clear. Definitely go to lecture because he teaches much better technique then the book uses. I only paid minimal attention during lecture because he writes everything on the board. Highly recommend.
He is amazing! I hate calculus, but he teaches so well that I could not help but to learn it. He is easily the best teacher I have ever had. He is funny, charismatic, and hot :)
He is the only teacher I've experienced through out my entire academic life who taught Math and made it easy to understand and interesting. One of the best professors I've had the pleasure of taking a course with. I strongly recommend his class if you plan on taking a Math course at UMD.
Fantastic professor. His teaching style is so effective that you won't need the book. Great sense of humor. Clear handwriting. Actually has an understandable accent. ONE drawback: he often makes mistakes while working out examples, though they really interfere with the answer.
Best professor in the entire university. I made sure to take him for Calc 2, 3 and Diff-EQ. Extremely Clear and thorough in his lectures. Study your notes and you will understand most, if not all the material. If you try hard in his class, you should get an A.
Justin is absolutely amazing. He is by far the best math teacher I have had in my entire school career. If you have to take Calculus 1 or 2 make sure you do it with him. He is an amazing teacher.
Obviously you can read all of the previous comments and know that Justin is the best math teacher at UMD. But, just to re-enforce it, he really is the BEST math teacher at the school. Personally, I HATE math, but after having Justin I really dont mind it anymore. I took the class spring 2011, and received an A. Take math with JUSTIN!
Very good professor. Neat and organized lectures. Seems to really want his students to understand the material. His homework for this course (Combinatorics) was pretty difficult, but he is extremely helpful, and responds usually within minutes to emails. Highly recommend.
Prof. Justin teaches the material by going step-by-step through each example and he even does ex. of harder problems(which other profs rarely do). He is very down to earth for a person who holds a PhD. Assignments: 4 exams (none dropped), 4 matlabs, 12 quizzes (2 dropped), and the final. Doesn't really curve grades since the average is usually high
This guy has the gift. He is the best teacher I've ever had. His energy and clarity make subject matter easy to follow and he explains the reasoning behind the material so it's not just plug and chug. If you ever have an opportunity to take a class with this guy, do NOT pass it up. It is an experience worth having.
SO wonderful! You can't even fathom that the material he teaches you could ever be difficult because he just explains and teaches so well. Plus hes hilarious and awesome and just a nice guy.
A rare combination: REALLY good teacher AND a really easy grader. That actually never happens. Plus, he's really awesome.
Very popular guy with a great teaching style: everything is written on the board and he slows down if you ask for more explanations. Lots of curving because this course it very hard!
I believe the "4.9" given, at the moment, for this professor is very accurate. He is as good as people say he is. He is so energetic, kind, smart, funny, charismatic - its almost unreal how good he is.
I love Justin!! He is a great teacher and he doesn't try and trick you on exams. If I could take another class with him I would. He is funny and adorable and he walked on his hands during class. notes are very helpful and his teaching style is crystal clear. He writes everything out clearly on the board and is just fantastic
Honestly, taking Justin has brought up my semester GPA by several tenths of a point. I don't mean I would have gotten that much worse of a grade in calc 3 without him; I mean that the sheer time that he saved me by actually teaching in lecture so that I didn't have to teach myself directly translated into time I could invest in other classes.
Seriously the best teacher ever.
Best professor in the math department. Bend over backwards and overhaul your schedule if necessary to take Justin--he's worth it! My GPA last semester was a good 0.2 higher just because of him, not only because my calc 3 grade was high, but also because I had so much more time for other classes since I needed less time for calc outside of class!
Amazing teacher
Great teacher. His lectures were extremely clear and he was super helpful and friendly during office hours. Definitely take a class with him if you can.
Best professor ever. His lectures were extremely clear and always has old exam to practice before the exam.
This man is a phenomenal professor. He explains things very well during class, and even goes over practice exams. Also, he seems to have the easiest tests compared to the other professors.
Best ever. No need to add more words. Check it yourself.
hes alright
Justin is fantastic. He explains things very clearly and makes class fun. Best math professor I've ever had.
Being only in my second semester, I thought it would be impossible that I have a favorite professor already, but Justin disproved that. He is an amazing lecturer, very clear, and his exams really test what you learned in the course, no trick questions. Any chance that I have to take another course by him, I will. Do the homework!!
Justin is probably the greatest lecturer in the math department. He explains everything very clearly and concisely during the lectures. However, beware of the final exam, as it is written by a combination of all of the math professors teaching during each term. I went into the final with an A in the class, but unfortunately ended up receiving a B.
One word: amazing. Justin is one of the greatest prof at UMD. He explains very clearly that you don't even need to read a textbook. He gives you enough practice for his exams and his exams are straightforward. He also responds to email very promptly. I will take every class Justin teaches but sadly I just need calc 3. Be aware, no curve tho
Can be a bit challenging if you're not used to programming. It wasn't too bad overall and was generally a low workload.
THIS CLASS IS THE EASIEST GPA BOOSTER. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE MULTIPLE SUBMISSIONS.
THANKS FOR THE FREE GPA BOOSTER.
Justin is the best professor at this university... ESPECIALLY in the math department. If you go to lecture, he explains everything so clearly, when it comes time to study, you just have to do old exams. IF IT SAYS TBA FOR A CLASS (MATH241 or 246) IT IS JUSTIN SO TAKE IT. His 241 class is usually at 9 AM, STILL TAKE IT. He's that amazing & worth it
350 characters is not enough to describe how great of a teacher Justin is. Do whatever you can to take his class. He is a funny and outstanding professor that truly wants his students to do well, and is extremely clear in his lectures. He'll answer any question with an analogy or with perfect clarity. The class is definitely on the easier side.
He is a good teacher but the reason he got a 1 was because he doesn't do things very clearly is you are a math head. Want a good grade? He's good for that but want to get into depths of math? BAD TEACHER! Also, he doesn't give solution to the exams so that is really annoying! Overall, funny easy teacher!
Justin is very effective teacher. Lectures are really good and the notes he writes on the board are like a mini textbook that is easy to understand. This class is not a walk in the park though you are going to have to work for your grade. He posts many handouts and old exams to prepare you, he also posts solutions to some of them. High recommend!
MATH401 was a fun class. Exams were pretty straight forward if you read you're notes and do the practice exams he posts. Homeworks were the hardest part of the course. They took a lot of time and sometimes the problems were not very clear. Overall though it was a nice laid back course. Learn a lot of interesting applications to.
He really explains those math concecpts clearly. Also, he is fun and his exam is not hard at all. Just follow every day homework and review past exam, you can get an easy A. Try every way you can to take his lecture.
Loved Justin. He explained topics in depth and in a manner that made a lot of sense. He lectured in a very organized manner perfect for taking notes. He also cracked a lot of jokes and made lecture very entertaining. Would love to have him again.
Justin is a hilarious professor and truly understands the material he teaches, 10/10.
Justin is hands down everything people says he is and more. Never has math clicked so clearly. He explains things in a completely understandable way and gives incredible notes. His tests are extremely fair so you know what to expect. He's also an incredible guy. 10/10 would take again. If it says TBA for 241, it's usually him!
If you know MATLAB, then the class is extremely easy, and it takes a sum total of three hours to complete all work for the course. If you dont know MATLAB already, then there is a collection of helpful (and humorous) tutorial documents provided on Canvas to help you teach yourself, and there is a very forgiving resubmission policy.
Justin teaches Calculus III fantastically. His lectures are clear and informative. Also, he is very down-to-earth and willing to help us understand the material we don't understand in his office hours. In short, he deserves his high ratings, and if you have a chance to take him, TAKE HIM!
By far one of the best professors I have ever come across. He makes learning calc 3 seem so easy, and has great notes available online.
The GOAT math professor of UMD. Amazing lectures, reasonable exams, and helpful office hours. TAKE HIM if you can.
Really is the phenomenal professor that he is made to be. 241 isn't an easy A, you have to legitimately study and put in the work, but Justin makes sure that you can get a good grade if you put the effort in. His lectures are very clear and organized; easy to understand. He also is pretty accessible and understanding if you need extra help.
Justin explains all of the topics so clearly, especially in the last two units. His exams are extremely fair, but be aware you need to work really hard (especially due to the unique nature of Calc 3 problems), but hard work ALWAYS pays off. He reminds me of why I would choose to study STEM. If a session says "Instructor: TBA", it is always him.
Out-of-this-world lecturer. Love his subtle accent. Gets straight to the point, and easy to understand and follow along. Would recommend 100%.
if god himself could come down and teach math, this would be it. He is so amazing and he honestly makes class enjoyable. This man is the actual goat
His lectures for Discrete were clear and concise. Exams were very fair, as most of the problems were similar to the homework. He grades fairly and does not curve.
Justin is absolutely amazing. Best professor in the university by far. If you have the chance to take a class with him do it.
Justin was a great lecturer even through online courses. He truly wanted his students to succeed (which is not always the case ). The homeworks were hard sometimes but he and the TAs were always there to help
MATALB is doable (highly recommend MATLAB Tutoring). Justin replies to emails and is great with updating the class through canvas. A great professor.
The saving grace of Zoom U. Justin created quick, focused videos about each topic, that we could watch at any time. The homework we did was meaningful and always important to exams. Overall, Justin ran a very well-organized class, I wouldnt have anyone else over him!
The class was beautifully taught, focuses on problem solving.
He makes a hard class understandable and actually enjoyable. He puts so much dedication into making sure his students succeed. I would have gotten an A is 216 didn't take all my time. Best professor I have had!
The class was amazing with Justin. Hands down best professor I have ever had. He was very knowledgeable and was clear with the material he taught. It was easy to follow his lectures and videos.
Incredible lectures and teaching style. You can tell he really wants you to understand the material, and he communicates it in a way that students can understand. The exams and quizzes are pretty fair; as long as you pay attention and attend discussions, you'll do fine. He's also the most entertaining prof I've had too! Really fun to talk to!
Justin is the best professor I've ever had. He's an amazing lecturer and breaks down each concept so you'll easily be able to understand what's going on. He also genuinely cares about his students. If you get a chance to take a class with him don't miss out on the opportunity.
Best prof of my life. Teaches exquisitely, but if you can't make class, you can watch his online videos he made for covid purposes, and learn the material just as well there. Love him to the moon and back, and hope I can have him again. BTW, when I signed up for this course, my section prof was TBD, jsyk.
One of the best teachers out there. Goes through lectures in a perfect manner, and has the best communication with his students. Exams are a walk in the park so long as you go to his classes.
Smug, highly unreasonable, I don't think can relate to the struggle of his students.
Justin is by far one of the best professors/teachers I've ever had. He's entertaining and really good at explaining topics that are usually complex and confusing.
Don't take MATH 206 if you're not already a very very strong programmer. It is extremely logic heavy and you either need to be a genius or be a software engineer at Google to get an A or B in this class. Justin also grades very very tough. I struggled my way to a B-, and spent at least I'd say 12-15 hours a week on this class. Take only if HIGH IQ!
the GOAT. im literally basing my four year plan off of whatever he's gonna teach. TAKE HIM.
It's not surprising that Justin gets this many good reviews. He's just that good of a professor. He explains the concepts very well, and he has great lecture notes. He talks and introduces the concept before writing them down. If you do the homework and attend discussion sections, you'll do well in the class.
Definitely had a few qualms this semester. For one, exams were many times littered with typos/errors which made exam days ever more stressful. Also, many homeworks I feel were graded a bit too unfairly. Overall though, Justin was a caring, informative lecturer who worked hard to deliver great content.
Justin's class was not at the university level, despite being intended for 3rd-year university students. I feel I could've learned more from
As someone who usually only bothers to review bad professors, I can't just ignore Justin. His good reviews live up to the hype and I can see why Justin is the undisputed goat. 351 is an extremely hard class and yet his lectures and notes are the only things you need to pass every exam. Would recommend.
