he's a good teacher, but he's not easy
Modern ethics class is a "must-take" for all PCC students. If you like controversial classroom debate, then this is the class for you.
Mans a genious. he knows what he's talking about. u have to listen and participate in debates. i personally learned a lot from taking him. he made it real fun and interesting. Good for the mind. ofcourse got an A.
The best professor ever. He is great at making you think. I took his etics class and i had a great time and I learned a lot.
get a seat in the front and prepare to watch the show...this guy can seriously get you to think. very passionate teacher. tests might be a lil hard but just pay attention in class and reading you'll be fine..oh and participation is a plus w/ him!!!
His class is interesting. He's a smart man, but he's a very paranoid person. Don't believe everything he tells you.
He is totally brilliant. He always gets you thinking and defenitly opens your mind to new perspectives. He makes the class extremly interesting and makes the material leave a lasting impression.I highly recomend him!
He's a VERY smart man and he makes u WANT to think. Kind person. He's a little hard though so make sure u attend all the lectures, TAKE GOOD NOTES (definately) and read the book.Get a seat in the front cuz sumtimes u wont be able to hear him.
very difficult class... he wants u to believe all the believes or his thoughts.... didn't like the class...
Get ready to fail if you don't start thinking the way he thinks. He runs his class like a little cult. If you don't believe in what they believe what they do they basically gang up on you and oust you. I'm still having nightmares..
i dunno anyone that got an A in this class but everyone that took him was fascinated by this man's lectures and experiences... he's a very interesting person and u'll learn alot from this class...but to do good in his class, think like him and read!!
An awe-inspiring professor, this man changes lives. I took him back in 1996, when still @ PCC, and his views and style still dye mine. Only intelligent, open-minded individuals need apply. A+++
This guy is crazy, but in a good way. He opens your mind to a whole new aspect of thinking. If u are not ready to question yourself or your beliefs this isn't the class for you. U have to read, and pay attention to pass.
Brilliant and sexy in a wise old man way; you have to sit up front and pay attention. I took him last year, and I am still having new revelations from things he said. Take him!
Richards is avery "unjust" teacher. He barely involves students in his lectures, and is hard to understand due to the fact that he doesn't speak clearly. His tests are crazy, true/false and not straight forward. I seriously beleive that he wa
If you read the book, you will do fine. I didn't read the book but I was able to pull off a B. His class is the best I ever took, the lectures are so interesting. He also puts alot of "Emotion" into them, you could say he changed my life.
Honestly he's a great teacher. I took him for the summer - 6 weeks only. I learned a lot from him. His exam are hard but his lecture are great. I got a B thanks to his kindness on grading.
He will open your mind to ideas of the world, not just limited to Philosophy. I highly recommend his classes!! Tests are difficult, but lectures are *definitely* worth it.
Hardest class I ever took. I dropped, along with all but about 5 students. If you can still take debate for the CSU critical thinking requirement then do it--much easier and much more useful.
He speaks too quietly and too quickly for me. He tended to favor people he'd had before over others. I don't dig it.
DR. Richards was an important part of my developement as a student of life and moreso as a student of philosophy. He is a credit to what we study--He inspired me and I am now on my way to graduate school, hopefully U. Chicago because of it.
this class is really hard..=/ but if you have an open mind you can learn a lot of things...he's a bit eccentric but insightful at the same time
semester class. easy if u read and take notes. 4 tests including final and midterm, nothing else no hw or projects. real interesting class and person. very nice guy.
Mr. Richards is by far the best teacher I have ever had. He has a lot to offer beyond the criteria od his classes. Take his class it will change your life.
Extremely interesting individual. He knows a great deal and is an incredible lecturer. You DO need to participate a LOT in his classes. Tests are hard and it's not very clear what you need to focus on in order to pass with an A.
If you read the chapters you will do fine, but his lectures are hard to follow at times. His test are hard, but he grades you fairly. I am glad I took his class.
He's a funny teacher. But he whispers in class...often I have to raise my hand and tell him to speak up...or tell him to walk closer to me so i can hear him!!!
He is a great teacher, though he can be a little hard to hear sometimes. He tells interesting stories that are not alwas relivant but good to hear. i would highly recomment his class to anyone interested in philosophy, he can really open your mind. his tests are really hard and he never uses the sam
I cant hear him! He talks too soft & he favors ppl. HIs test are hard. As much as you may study for it you'll always miss something that he'll ask on the test. The stories in class he tells are interesting and it seems he knows what he's talking about. Be prepare to READ & REREAD the book/lectures.
I like Richards class, i thought it was very interesting.. he is actually pretty easy in philo 25, he gives extra credit, just try to do them all and you will be fine. He tells very interesting stories and make you be more aware of what is going on in the world. Take his class
a great teacher who knows what he is talking about. His tests are hard but he gives many extra credit opportunities to students. Take his class if you want to enlighten yourself.
The single most brilliant prof at PCC, hands down. I took his class in 2002, and haven't forgotten it -- simply amazing. Do sit up front, he talks in a soft voice -- and go and see him in office hours, you learn more there. No one ever made me think as much as he did!
Ug. Cannot hear him. I sit in the very front, can barely hear him. Interesting stories, no idea which are true and which are not. Likes to prove students wrong. Seems to enjoy this very much. Strange man.
Richards class is absolutly amazing! His lectures are wonderful, and filled with life changing stories and examples! If you want to learn more about life in general take Richards.
Simply put, he is the best teacher I've encourtered. I would follow this man into a revolution if he would lead one. Does whisper, that kinda bothers me. I didn't really passed his class, but thats because I failed myself and him
Richards is awesome!I completed this couse 2 sem. ago and i am taking another w/ him.He is very wise, eccentric, and opinionated.W/out being too cheesy, this course w/ Richards opened my eyes and helped me change my life. ROCK ON, RICHARDS!
what is wrong with you people? this guy is tough! he is not clear as well. Thank god I am no longer at PCC!
i'm sure he has a lot of interesting things to say cause you can tell he's totally brilliant, but my main complaint was that I COULD NOT HEAR A DARNED THING HE SAID. he spoke quietly and mumbled so that only a selected few in the front could hear him. that pissed me off but i got an A so whatever
briliant man. tough but fair grader. enterteing as ****. 2 written and one mulitple choice. hundred points each. compare and contrast. this is the teacher you want if you actually want to learn philosophy.
An extremely brilliant man.Has an energetic passion to remind students to think for themselves. With his wealth of knowledge I guarantee that you will look foward to every class session.Through all my years in school I have never encountered such a dynamic person full of life.his class is a must take
You just can't hear him! He speaks in a tiny voice and teaches nothing from the book but testes from the book! He loves taunting students with stupid stories. He sucks at grading and never takes role! Won't let you take the final when you're 20 minutes late! For that, my grade went from an A to a C!
The most amazing, brilliant professor i have ever had in my life!I recomend him to every student i speak with.He doesn't teach directly out of the book, but if you participate in class you will definetly pass.He challenges you to question all he says & the information will forever change your life.
Not only can you never hear him talk but the class will put you to sleep. He talks about one philosopher for almost the entire class and gives no breaks. You will be bored to tears even if you come into this class loving philosophy. Trust me you will not after this. He has very strong views and thinks he is right.
man that was among ont of the best classes i'vr hed
he is the best philosophy teacher, brilliant man, that opens you to new and interacting ideas about the world....although i took him for winter, short term, there was 4 tests i got c and d's on all....hard grader...test are hard...but he passed me with a C...thank u richards!!!!! he is the best, although he's stories in class make u crack up!!
Err...I suppose he is the "best and most brilliant" if one's definition of such contains perplexing ontological quandaries such as "How can you prove to me that invisible pink elephants aren't in this room right now?" Juvenile, hackneyed lectures. Ridiculous and pompous psuedo-intellectual rhetoric. Often unclear assignments. Easy but useless.
Very intelligent professor who genuinely cares to help the students in thinking critically. Goes beyond the scope of the book to produce ideologically driven students. Very practical in methods of teaching as main focus is discussion. Encourages students to take initiative in their education. Very unique professor. Class is highly recommended.
Sit on in the front seats of the class!!!! talk to him after class, he will tell you all about conspiracy theories, fluoride in water and governmet testings on unsuspeciting citizens. I would call this class something else other that philosophy, more like a casual but intersting bar conversation with dude that has done it all and seen it all.
Richards is a professor who has a lot of knowledge. His lectures help tremendously. His exams are usually 100 question true/false, however the questions are phrased difficulty. He gives extra credit opportunity which can boost up your grade because each extra credit point is equivilent to a test point.
You must sit in the front or somewhere near there to hear Prof.Richards because he can get quite soft @ times. Other than that he has some of the greatest lectures ever! He gets so into it that he starts shouting! Wow, so inspiring! He will argue both ways and let u the student decide what is true or false. Tests were T/F and there is xtra credit.
Dr. Richards was one of the more prolific lecturers I have ever had on the subject and I am currently a grad student.

Richards can be described as a man of tremendous intellect and diminutive voice. Those who are interested in manifold, non-linear discussions of abstract philosophical concepts and how they relate to modern society will likely enjoy his impassioned lecturing style. Not for those who want an easy "A" without doing the necessary critical thinking.
A very good professor who is very intelligent and informed on current issues afflicting our government. He also has a vast amount of experience about both philosophy and real life. I would recommend Cont. Moral Problems to anyone interested in philosophy.

I've moved on to USC, but Justus Richards is the single most erudite, challenging, amazing prof I had in all my years at PCC. Sit up front and work hard, and you will be transfixed.
One of the finest PCC has. A good man with a brain.
Richards leads by example; adopting each modality of thought as he explicates its' paradigm. I took his class in 1999 and in 2005 he still affects how I approach critical thinking for various populist groups.
ok he is the MOST confusing man on this planet, you cant hear him,and you never know if you have an assignment, his 2 test are ridiculous, geez his class was so boring i was asleep all the time if you want a friend take him if you want to learn then avoid him.

This guy's very provocative. He can mimmic any point of view. He gives the greatest lectures and for a good grade, I cannot stress how much you need to participate in the lectures. That means speaking up in class. So, if you're shy and don't like to speak up, you won't get an A.
Mr. Richards will take you on journeys in your own brain. His insightful lectures make for great scholastic banter. He is definately a very educated man who has the ability to argue any single topic and make you agree for it when he is arguing for, and against it when he is arguing against it. Take heed to his warning though, "I am not responsible for what may happen to your brain after this class". Mr. Richards is my favorite teacher so far in my whole college experience!
Ok, I just don't understand what everyone digs so much about this professor. He is nothing special, I learned nothing amazing from him, and his letures went all over the place and ended nowhere. You just pick up a bunch of random interesting facts at most. I guess if you've never thought too hard in your life you might be impressed.

Perhaps the worst teacher I have ever had, already half the class has dropped and the other half is still thinking about it, he never goes over the material your supposed to read and he goes off on tangents about nothing all the time, avoid him if possible
No Comments
He knows the material very well and knows how to teach it and relate it to real world examples. The subject is a bit confusing but i pulled off a B so i think pretty much anyone else can do as well as i could. You'll be surprised to find how well you can argue after this class.
man this class was pretty hard for me. we started with around 50 people and now the class is going to finish with around 19 attending. he helps you out a lot though just make sure you talk to him personally. READDDDDDDDDd
hard to satify and talks really low if ur not in the front two rows its hard to hear
I REALLY LIKED THIS TEACHER..I KNOW HE CARES THAT YOU PASS. CLASS PARTICIPATION IS PART OF YOUR GRADE. YOU JUST NEED TO READ AND READ AND READ AND YOU'LL HAVE NO PROBLEMS ANSWERING HIS TEST QUESTIONS. DON'T SHOW UP TOO LATE TO HIS CLASSES AND DON'T BE ABSENT. SHOW INTEREST AND EFFORT AND YOU'LL BE FINE.
I thought his lectures were great. Absolutely hated the T/F tests. It was difficult to predict what would be on the test. Tests too short, and read out loud. Test based on comparing the philosophers; maybe a good thing. Bad for me. Papers were short and very easy. Overall I think he is a great professor. Very enjoyable. I got a C.
This class was awesome. I got an A relativly easy, but you have to read, and have to do good on the veryfew exams he gives out. He's not for the feint of heart, some of his disscussions really make you think, in a disturbing way. If your actually interested in the material, look no further. If your just looking for credit, keep looking.
His class made me think. Not many classes on campus would do that, so I highly recommend anyone to take his class. Out of the four exams, the first (short answers) was actually the easiest; I hated the true and false exams. He talks either REALLY quiet or REALLY loud, so be prepared. But you'd never fall asleep during his lectures.
This professor is very hard nosed, and his guiding philosophy that there is NO reason to miss his class only shows that he does not support the freedom of thought necessary to foster education in a university setting, I highly reccomend not taking this professor if you participate in any extra-caricular activities, He will not allow makeups at all!
a funny teacher
This guy truly beilves he knows eveything about the world mannnn its helarious....dont get me wrong he has some pretty crazy lectures...it almost seems like hes tryin to brainwash every1..its just funny to watch....one moment hes calm...and the next he f*ckin looses it..but overall ull learn alot....and reead reaaad reaaad.....oh btw sit in the fro
Brilliant man, most brilliant prof at PCC -- very difficult to understand unless you make a total commitment to hanging on HIS EVERY WORD.
the best teacher ever!!!
If you don't mind getting a B or C, this is a good class to take for the experience - he's an extremely talented lecturer. Unfortunately, he's VERY easily steered off topic. Tests are based on the text, not the lecture, and they're given orally. He doesn't repeat previous questions, so don't be late on a test day or you'll have to guess.
likes to talk like morpheus.. gives out hard tests... challenging and thought provoking lecturers...no extra credit...no recording lectures. sit right in front...he doesn't speak loud enough.. got an A with a lot of work. gives hard exams. beware, can be inconsistent with hard/easy exams.
Worst class I have ever taken in my college career. Class discussions were lead by 35 year old men that sat in front...never gotten anything lower than an A at PCC and got a C in this class.
Last rater is just upset he didn't do well. Justus Richards is the most brilliant professor at PCC - just sit close enough to hear him. One of the two or three best profs on campus. It is a very hard class but I am so proud of my B.
I found his teaching method to be very effective in understanding the material: he would teach by arguing (very well) different philosophies as if he truly believed in them. However, not much of the class reader is discussed in class and that's what the tests are on.
Richards does not make any sense, he is very unorganized, and never stays on point. I got a B in his class, which isnt great for me, and I got a D on one of his two tests because it did not make ANY sense. I did not learn one thing in his class and feel like I wasted 16 weeks of education. He does not follow the syllabus and is impossible to hear.
This guy is an idiot, he makes everybody go "What The Hell is he talking about?", his notes on the board are unreadable and he's teaching method stinks, also, his tests are hard and very tricky.
Justus Richards is one of the best teachers I have ever had. You need to put the work into his class to understand it, but he is brilliant. The people who say he is bad don't know what they're talking about. Take his class, sit up front, ask questions, pay attention, and you'll get more out of this class than you ever thought you could.
I took 2 of his classes and earned a B for both. He is a genius and his talking is brilliant! he can talk really soft sometimes so you want to sit in front. Just listening to his lecture makes you feel so philosophical about life! He is a great person and knows his stuff very well. His test is not easy but it's usually from the book, not lecture.
MY FAVORITE TEACHER EVER! He is so amazing. I will never forget Dr. Richards.... I've never met anyone like him, so passionate about his subject, so brilliant, intelligent, and charming. He could be Socrate's dad. haha... What a treat to take his class. Prepare to be blown away.
The best teacher I have had. Very understanding and kind teacher!!!! Just do the hw and the extra credit and you will pass. OF course he is scary the first day but just sit in the front of the class. Make sure for the speech make it contreversial or else!
Good Prof - tests are exactly like the homework and are all weighted te same (even the final). If you have an A before the final AND good attendance AND have all the homework turned in the he'll let you skip the final.
Mr. Richards is an awesome professor! If you want to be inspired, challenged, and entertained all at the same time, then I suggest taking this class. Coupled with his, obviously, genuine love of teaching, Richards' talent for dramatic storytelling forces you to hold onto his every word, opening your mind to limitless possibilities, and endless fun
I took this guy 3 years ago and I'm at another univ now, and he still stands out in my mind as the best professor I've ever had. I still remember his classes, he's so amazing. I've never ever been bored in his class. I feel so lucky to have been in 2 of his classes... I didn't like PCC, but to take his class, I'd do it all over again.
AWESOME!! If you go to PCC and do not take a class from this man you have missed an educational experience like no other. Sit in front due to his extreme vocal dynamics. This man can argue for or against any argument and be convincing. I took 3 classes from Dr. Richards because a professor like this makes you want to learn.
He is one of the most interesting people I have ever encountered in my life...he has tons of interesting/useful stories. He can get very loud, but sit in the front because he talks very softly most of the time. He gives the Best Lectures, two and a half hours and i never get bored!
great teacher who has compassion for his students.
I transferred to UCLA as a philosophy major bc of this man while he inspired me to take interest in politics & history His lectures are amazing & constitute a real educational college experience if only you give it a chance & really listen to what he is saying His class requires independence bc he is not goin to spoonfeed you the materialnot Hschoo
BEST INSTRUCTOR I'VE EVVVEEERRR HAD. He's not easy, but that is good. TAKE HIS CLASS AT ALL COSTS.
Justice Richards is by far the best teacher I have ever had. I have not taken any of his classes in years but I highly recommend him. I have since received a Bachelors degree and have not encountered anyone as inspirational as he. Anyone who gets out of PCC without taking his class is doing themselves a disservice. The man truly changed my life
HE IS AMAZING AND INSPIRATIONAL, YOU MUST TAKE HIM. HE HAS CHANGED MY LIFE FOREVER AND I TRUELY THANK HIM FOR THAT. I INTEND TO TAKE HIS CLASSES SO LONG AS HE AND I ARE AT PCC.
Super duper wonderful human being! I think he is Superman in disguise. I wish I could get his brain in book form, full of knowledge and practical information. He is nice and I wish all teachers were like him. <3
Mr. Richards is an awesome teacher..Taking him is a life changing experience. He's more than a teacher he is devoted to changing the world through his students. He is a very hard grader but class will give you life lessons that you can carry on for the rest of your life. Truly inspiring individual.
Hands down the hardest class I had ever took in school. Suprisingly, I got an A ..weird huh? I forgot how his test and grading go, the only advice I can give is unless LOGIC and Philo is your "thing", prepare to study. He didn't help me much when I asked
Mr RicHards doesn't teach Philo 30, you probably have him mixed up with Mr Ricards. Anyways, Mr Richards is a tough grader and he demands a lot because this is college. If you like to think and you want to learn you just may love his class.
love the guy. the best philo professor... he will expand you brains so much you'll prasie him..... MUST: 1. READ. 2. PARTICIPATE!!!!!!!!!!!
This man is practically a God, he is the best teacher I have encountered at P.C.C. He is highly recommendable and I love his style of teaching.
Utterly fantastic. Harvard would be lucky to have teachers this good.
really good professor. force students to think and defend their beliefs and views.
i dont get why everyone raves about this guy so much.. he has a lot of conspiracy theories, big deal, that doesnt make him socrates........
One of the greatest professors at PCC. No matter what beliefs you hold, he will challenge them, and force you to grow as a person. Can be an atheist on day, and a evangelical the next. Test vary in style and can be difficult, so READ. Can't stress this enough: Participation is MANDATORY! If you don't like to talk/debate take another class!
A rare gem. A valuable professor and an exemplary person. I am forever grateful for his advice. He cares but you must listen with an open mind. He wants you to learn, he's not trying to pick on you!
Without a doubt, a great mind. He really makes you think about real topics. Didnt do so good in his class, but every lecture was awesome. His class consist of only four exams, all class lecture and reading a some what difficult book. But if you have an open mind and you'll love all the information you'll learn from him. Not an easy A though.
A friend of mine hated him, I loved him. Love him or hate him he will make you think. He seems crazy but he is nice.
Why is this man not married? He is what all you men should strive to be. An honest man with integrity and a good sense of humour. He has words of wisdom. Listen humbly and learn!
I really didn't like this guy. I kept a grade log in the class and knew that I had an A and then grades came out and I had a B. We had a group project of a debate and he never told us the grades, but apparently the whole group got a lower grade which lowered mine. He talks about random stuff during class and is frustrating. Don't take him.
prof. richards, has changed my life. Isn't that what education is about? Not an easy A
Interesting class. I love the way he would debate himself by stating one position then stating the next. Open to discussion. Text is boring though, more fun to go to class and listen to him
Though I have to admit that Richards may seem to go off topic, his discussions really do help students to understand the course material. There's never a dull moment in his class and you do learn quite a lot just from the lectures. Reading the material is necessary to doing well on his exams. Take notes and pay attention and you'll do fine!
I took his philo 1 class in winter, and I am currently taking philo 25 for fall 07....He is an amazing teacher. Never a dull moment in class, very intelligent. His philo 1 class requires reading and study. I got an A, and i never took a philo class before. you'll never take a class like his, changed my life truly. Listen and learn
I think everyone has done well reporting how great Richards is. Taking this class will make you a better person, hopefully. He will teach you to really critically think about all those things you don't. Read, pay close attention and take detailed notes. After that just sit back and enjoy. Oh yeah and he gave us all that answers on the final.
he talks super quiet but gets loud when its something hes passionate about. sit in the front. He only gave us 2 tests and the final was some dumb "group" project. He gets off topic a lot, but as long as you read the book and make connections u should be fine. He is super smart and has interesting stories. but i wouldnt suggest taking him.
He is a vary passionate teacher. He really wants all of his students to do well and he shows it. Very fair grader, take notes and listen cuse he tells you what will be on the tests, only 3 tests all semester and no homework, also read the textbook and sit in front he talks softly. Take him for the experience you won't regret it.
Horrible! He speaks so low u cant hear him, the class is BORING
HE DOES SPEAK IN A LOW VOICE AND CAN SUDDENLY GET LOUD..THE TEXT IS PRETTY HARD TO UNDERSTAND, BUT WHEN HE GOES OVER IT YOU THEN GET IT...HE REALLY DOES MAKE YOU THINK EVEN ON THINGS YOUR REALLY NOT INTERESTED IN...HES A GOOD TEACHER.. ITS NOT THAT EASY THO
he is AMAZING! nicest guy ever, always willing to help. his lectures are filled with new information, you leave his class everytime knowing a little bit more. he loves what he does, and cares about his students. he's not easy, he makes you think. but great professor overall
All I will say is this: whether or not you agree with anything he says, this will be the most stimulating and entertaining class you will ever take. (Just don't take your beliefs too seriously)
Mr Richards is a wonderful man! Every lecture was one to look forward to. Not an easy A, but it is possible, even if you fail the class is worth taking, his thoughts can change your life.....forever.....for the best that is! Take the class!
By far, Mr.Richards is one of the most influential professors on campus in my book. He has left an everlasting impression on my learning and understanding. I have no complaints, only praise. His lectures provoke thought and encouragement to be stronger thinkers. I wouldn't want any other professor for Philosophy. :-)
This guy is crazy! But in a good way beacause he's hard to forget. He gets into his lectures and makes them fun. Tests were mostly on the text so definitely READ! He's extremely helpful and nice. But it is crucial to keep up with the reading, do that and you'll be fine.
Everyone learns this subject differently, but this professor is great. Helpful, and truly cares about his students. Extremely intelligent, he is the most influential person on campus!
BEST teacher I've had at PCC, really interesting lectures, makes you THINK!
Amazing teacher! He's very intelligent, loves teaching philosophy, and above all tries to get his students to THINK. A word of warning for any narrow-minded loudmouths out there: don't try to poke holes in his logic, you will only make yourself look like a fool. People seem to get offended at some of the things he says, but just keep in mind that h
...he is mainly stating the various views of many famous philosophers, not necessarily his personal point of view. Just keep an open mind!
He's definitely a little crazy, but in that great influential way. He's one of the best teachers I have seen in many years. He knows how to get into his students' heads and how to make them remember what he is saying. He actually cares about his students. Take the time to talk to him. He's truly an interesting man. A reading schedule is necessary.
Absolutely the best teacher I've had at PCC. Class was difficult as S**T but I gained so much out of it. Thought I was getting an F, maybe a D at best, but ended up with an A!
Prof. Richards may not give the best first impression, but he really is an impressive teacher. Took him for summer class, all his tests are from the readings. Attendance is highly recommended, because he always points out what to pay attention in the reading.
IF PROF. RICHARDS WAS A DICTATOR.. HE WOULD SOO MAKE THIS WORLD A BETTER PLACE. HE IS THE BEST PHILO TEACHER. HE IS A GOD. TAKE HIM NOT EASY CLASS BUT HE IS GOOD AT EXPALIANING THINGS. YOU ARE SERIOULSY ON YOUR OWN IN THIS CLASS. READ EVERY ARGUMENT, DO NOT MISS AT ALL ANY OF HIS CLASSES
Revolutionary professor. Listen to his lectures, its a shame theres a grade attached to the class because if there wasn't it would make it that much more enjoyable. Read the book before the lectures which will allow you to fully tie in the lecture with the book. He will change the way you think.
Let me tell you all something about Richards. He loves persistence. I talk to him after every class (currently taking him) and he's one of those professors you remember throughout your life, Dead Poets Society status (minus the suicide). Take him, get high to his words, and sit in front. Make SURE to participate and get the most out of this class.
he is a knowlegdeable professor. you can learn a lot from his class. read the book before come to class. hard class! 3 test for whole semester(include mid-term and final).
Changed my life. I use what Mr. Richards gave me in his classes everyday. Have faith in yourself, you owe it to him.
I suppose I can only echo other comments. The first time I met Richards I thought he was crazy, and maybe he is, but he is the kind of crazy I now aspire to. His lectures are spellbinding. Take his class.
hard class! he is really intense but is a very interesting teacher make sure to read before the class
Absolutely Revolutionary! Should become a dictator..America will be sooo much better with him as a leader!
read the book before come to class. trust me, he will change ur view of life. he care about his student. most intelligent professor in PCC.
Extremely smart man. Though the class is rather difficult because your grade is based on 3 things (2 mid terms and a final) So reading the book and paying attention during lectures is a must. Recomended to those who would like to challenge their beliefs. Passionate and Intense individual. Argueing is a plus. so make sure you are willing to fight =]
The only teacher I remember from PCC. Will teach you to think for yourself. Hope he's still teaching I would go back to college just for his class.
this man is amazing. love him. listen and you will learn great things... though, buy him some new markers, from when I was in his class you couldn't see a thing...yet he kept writing... dedicated he is.
Richards is a great public speaker and extremely charismatic. However, I should not have taken his Critical Thinking class. I learned nothing about the topic, other than his (real?) stories about him inventing a water no-emissions engine, JFK conspiracy theories, among others. His studying requirements are unclear.
I do not understand why so many people love him. He gets dramatic, talks about stories that aren't even true. He goes off topic all the time, and the material he DOES teach is hard to understand. He talks about how the world really is, the reality of it all, and I think the only reason people love him so much is because they are sheltered.
A pure genius. This man will change your outlook on life, He is the best professor at PCC. Sit in the front. This class is not easy, he will not spoon feed you. You will NEED to read plenty, If you want a good grade ask questions and get involved in the arguments. Tests are usually true/false. Hes a wonderful teacher because he is passionate.
Ratemyprofessors.com really missed it on this one. i expected a great teacher and instead, i had to listen to a crazy man tell stories that i don't even believe. If this guy changed your life, i feel sorry for you. expect this class to be a struggle and hard work with test that are meant to trick you. have fun, NOT!
Richards' class is entertaining. He is passionate, and can at times seem to be "crazy" It's a difficult class, and many don't understand his way of teaching. But I found him to be one of the best at PCC. Just make sure you read, read, read. His tests are very difficult.
i dont know why people dont like this professor. he is one of the best.he has a specific method of teaching. and if your one of the people that didnt survive his class was because you probably didnt understand his interesting way of teaching. very passionate.you have to read.alot.youll fail if you dont.fun class.take it. wont regret it.I got an A=)
Very passionate teacher! Not many like him, awesome! I will say that the tests are extremely difficult. You really have to READ the book to pass the them, the notes you take during lectures are not enough. In order to get a good grade, do not be silent!! He really does give you a lot of extra for even arguing with him. Definitely recommend!
Great teacher, learned a lot from him... didn't really do the textbook studying... did poorly on tests, but learned so much about the world!
he is a mad man. I love his class. he inspired me to want to learn more and read. It doesnt matter if his stories are true or false. I never fell asleep in that class. his test are difficult but all the answers are in the book.
Richards' class is great- if you enjoy a vaguely interesting but altogether pointless philosophical endeavor. Sure Richards is smart, but his self-indulgent style eclipses any genuine attempt at teaching. He rarely encouraged any meaningful discussion, and shared stories with little relevance. Be prepared to bring a shovel- the bs piles up quickly
The best out there. If you didn't like him, you didn't get him and it's absolutely your loss. He's tough but fair. Read the text - duh! Study your ass off. Engage him. If you don't challenge him you aren't doing it right. Be contentious but also have a point or he will skewer you.
He's a nice and funny man with a lot of wisdom, but I did not learn much from his lectures because they did not seem organized to me, though everyone learns differently. Make sure you read. no e.c. no hw (except reading). He was difficult for me so I ended up dropping, but he is a wonderful person. Make sure you sit close he speaks softly sometimes
Absolutely amazing teacher. Very complicated mind, but a true genius and wise man. Learned so much, and have the utmost respect for him. He's wise and PASSIONATE about teaching and making a difference, so listen closely and I guarantee his lectures will change your life. Lots of reading, so don't get lazy, and participate as much as you can :)
He's a very wise man with interesting views on different subjects. His lectures may be long but he lets you out early, depending on how tired all the students look. & if you're in the marines, guess what? You get extra credit!
I was extremely disappointed with this class. The professor was more interested in telling personal (and most likely fabricated) stories than communicating the main points of the course. He was unwilling to assist with questions, did not give any indication of what would be on the exams (or how they would be structured), and was more interested i
He was unwilling to assist with questions, did not give any indication of what would be on the exams(or how they would be structured),and was more interested in arguing topics he was passionate about(regardless of if they were relevant to the course or not). His lectures would often go off on tangents.I would not recommend this professor.
Great lectures! (will not help you for the exams.) Exams=nightmare. Tested on minute details or on concepts he did not go over thoroughly in class. EC is subjective via participation. If he knows and likes you, then you will receive pts. Military=many points. This system is unfair. Not recommended. Full of himself. Not a good intro to Philo.
HE IS SUCH A GREAT TEACHER!!!! In a world where people are only concerned about grades rather than actual learning he shows his students the meaning of real education. He's truly difficult, but he will make you learn and open your eyes to the world. Passionate, intelligent, and powerful. Richards is one of the best teachers I have ever had!!!
He's so inspirational! I dreaded this class, but once I got used to his teaching method, he was easy to understand, but lectures are LONG. He wonderful to listen to; If you do the extra credit, you won?t have problem getting a least an "B". READ THE BOOK! If you don't, you can't pass, (read prior to going to class to keep up with his lectures).
Excellent teacher. I almost majored in Philosophy because of his class.
Course is all about reading the text and understanding the philosophical ideas and arguments. His teaching style is not for everyone but it doesn't take long to realize Richards is a man of wisdom and knowledge and is happy to share every bit of it in great detail, still pertaining to the material of course. It was a pleasure being in his class.
Richards will blow your mind with his life stories! He is a true positive influence. I highly recommend him for anyone, especially if you lean toward vegetarianism and communism. Take his class he's an Amazing person!
I absolutely loved having Professor Richards for Philo 1. Listen to his stories, they'll open your eyes to the world around you. If you participate in class, you are sure to pass the class regardless of how well you do on your tests. If I weren't so shy, I would probably be visiting him often, the man is a GENIUS, no doubt about it.
Don't be shy. That is the biggest piece of advice I can give. This is my third semester with Richards, he changed my life and I'm sure he'll change yours too.
I've given Richards a 5 in helpfulness. While philosophy may or may not be your game, his helpfulness is in regards to the perspective he'll give your life. If you're open minded, and willing to listen, you'll learn more with him than you ever have before, that's a guarantee.
Most fun I've ever had in a class. He tries to get you to think and see things from a different perspective. He wants you to ask questions and challenge his arguments.
He is really an amazing teacher! wow did he change my life he talks from his heart and makes you think about life. the tests are mostly about compearing the people in the readings, test are oral he reads them out and you only have 3 tests, no hw besides reading, we only had to write 1 paper super easy. he loves people that participate. STAND OUT!
This wasnt a philosiphy class, it was a class on life. If you are just looking for a grade then avoid this class, but if you want to sit and listen to a great man full of logic and wisdom, get in this class. People say he is slanted this way and that, but they dont really understand that he just loves to get students thinking. TAKE THIS CLASS!
this teacher is the worst teacher i have ever had. everyone on here who says he is great has done exactly what he wants you to do. he is crazy. literally. he lies to the class making up stories that the fbi has come to his office. well if the did obviously he would not be working there anymore. he is so hard to understands. bad hand writting.
He is a great professor who gets you to think, he will argue several sides to an issue. Sometimes he speaks too quietly. True many of his life stories are probably made up, they do prove points he is trying to make.
He is great. He truly gets u to think and that allows u to open ur horizon. Granted he does go on and on about things and sometimes its hard to understand what he is talking about but he is very intelligent
Probably my favorite teacher at PCC. You can't take anything he says too seriously, he just wants you to THINK. You must read the book in order to pass te tests. I got a C on every test but got a B in the class for participation. He marks down how much you cotribute to the cnversation so speak up! Don't be afraid to ask questions or argue!
It's funny that everyone who wrote a bad review can't even spell and has made grammatical errors. If you have a problem with Richards, it's because you are close-minded. That's what college is for. Open up your mind and listen to what he has to say. He doesn't teach you what he wants you to think, but how to think ON YOUR own. Phenomenal. The best.
Read the text before class. Listen to him. If you're a weeny, you'll drop. He wants questions, he wants to hear YOUR ARGUMENT! Open your eyes! If anyone can speed the process of spiritual growth besides man's sticks thrown in the path of rollerbladers, Justus is in the lead. If you are the plant, he is the water, and he'll help you find more sun!
Amazing! Even though I received a C in his class, I learned much about the topic even with little interest. An insanely intelligent man, funny, and truly admirable.
Richards is great. His passion is so gripping! He's a real teacher, he actually lives out what he believes--just like Socrates, which I learned from Richards. He says outrageous things sometimes, but his purpose is to stir up a jaded generation to start using their brains, to start contributing to the world. I really loved taking his class.
definitely not what you expect. I keep seesawing between being impressed by him and laughing at his blatant contradictions. Don't try and figure out if he's for real, it's as difficult as finding truth in philosophy. Just read the book and take notes. If nothing else it's an easy class, and you might be entertained by his antics.
I agree with the comment that labels the authors of negative comments as close-minded. They're just upset and jealous that this professor is too rational for their stubborn, teenage-minded thinking. Delusional thinkers tend to hate rational thinkers, whereas the vice-versa is not true because people who are right have no need to be jealous.
definately a fun class. Richards is a very smart man, and i loved his class. He likes to mix up the tests. sometimes it will be short answer, other times true/false. Just make sure to come to class, and actively take notes on what he says about the authors. I wouldn't say an easy a, but definately an easy b.
Richards is a real college professor which is hard to combe by these days. You must participate and think!!He awars a lot of points for people who speak up in class and that will give you the A you want. He is an intelligent man and you will walk out of that class a different person.
VERY FUN AND INTERESTING CLASS. YOU'LL DEFINITELY LEARN A LOT FROM HIS CLASS JUST BY LISTENING TO HIS LECTURES. DR.RICHARDS IS A VERYY INTELLIGENT MAN AND A FUNNY TEACHER. IT IS A PRIVILEGE TO BE HIS STUDENT.
BEST TEACHER EVER. If you want to actually learn something, you MUST take his class.
The class consisted of lectures and 3 tests. However, each lecture is a real floor show. He gets really PASSIONATE about many topics. He reached quite a range of emotions during each class (from joyous laughter to being basically in tears). He also contradicts himself (purposefully) constantly in order to illustrate multiple points of view.
People taking professor Richards class are must to have; use your own thinking, take enough time to read and discuss what you have learned in class. Professor Richards made my life more easier by understanding the meaning of philosophy. I appreciate him so much because he is like a fountain of wisdom to todays corrupted minds. His lectures R worth.
Passionate on certain topics, eye-opening, isn't always "politicaly correct", very entertaining and truthful. Must have/do: READ THE BOOK! (no seriously read the book), you must have an open mind, if you plan on NOT reading the book then you better not miss a single lecture (not even ONE). Tests vary as much as his personality.
GREAT TEACHER! My favorite by far. He loves to play Devil's Advocate in order to force you to fight for what you believe is moral right...which is a great method that proves to start up class discussions... As long as you listen and TALK TALK TALK TALK you will get a good grade. (I never even read the text...and i ended up getting an A)
PARTICIPATE/Argue back in discussions, even if you falter, as long as it's evident you are TRYING and providing specific examples. The teacher is a great orator and easily points out flaws in students' arguments, but stay stubborn. Definitely read the book, prone to essay questions about specific philosophers.
Very entertaining and passionate teacher. I look forward to each meeting/lecture. Reading the text is a must and not a bad thing at all as most readings are enlightening and thought-provoking.
Essential Philo teacher. Take him even if you don't need the class. Take him if you don't go to this school. Amazing.
How is he a good teacher? First of all he talks really softly like he's mumbling and then when he gets excited he starts yelling. He never uses the board and when he does you cant even read what hes writing. So far every class is just him talking about random things that have barely anything to do with the class. He doesn't even teach PERIOD!
He is the most intelligent teacher that I have come across in my academic career, If you are willing to make this world a better place take this teacher. If wish to entrance yourself with a meaningless existence in which you will maintain this level of control for your entire level and never think for yourself do not take this class, come back later
If you pay attention and write good notes, you'll get an A, period. On an emotional note, hey changed my world! I never cried listening to a lecture before.
The best teacher I have ever had. He teaches you so much more than just philosophy, we've covered so many topics it's unbelievable. He will make you question things you never have, and twist your perception of reality into something else. I REALLY enjoyed this class.
Best. Teacher. Ever. Some people say he mumbles but thats not true. He has the best speeches and stories but they all connect back to the lesson in the textbook. He makes the class interesting. You need ALOT of reading for this class. Textbook is very important. bring it everyday.
First thing about this class: you HAVE to read and there's a lot of readings. With that said, I took this class twice because I failed the first time. I didn't read the first time so I thought his lectures were irrelevant. However, 2nd time around, I did the readings, and it made everything so much clearer and interesting. Overall, great class.
Reading the book is a MUST! You don't read = fail. Ask questions, class participation will boost your grade. He values student's input. I'm glad I took his class even though I didn't pass but I learned so much from what I did read and get from his lectures. His exams are different each time so you MUST know the material. Hard class & great guy
Dr.Richards is a cool guy. He has jokes, he makes you think, he's not too harsh on tardiness, but reading the assignments is a must, otherwise you'll get the grade I got -_- (C). If you enjoy reading and would like to learn a few great things about this country and life as a whole, do take this class.
LOTS AND LOTS of reading, the tests are based completely on the reading and are very hard. This class is hard to pass but hes a very interesting and intellegent teacher, definitely gets you too think outside the box and reevaluate your life, which is a good thing!
His Philosophy 1 class is difficult. I got a C on every test and participated minimally but got an A. Tests are crazy hard and format is totally random. Average grades for tests was never above 60% Dont schedule another class right after his, he runs his class from start to finish and often overtime, sometimes up to 30 min! He is a nice guy
love him! great arguements..wonderful prof. very passionate. he's just excellent!!! sit in front of his class and participate. that will get you a B!
Mr Richards is a very passionate teacher that truly cares about his students. I wish I was still in his class. I recommend that you participate, and ask questions. My final grade in his class was an A. I can not wait to take him again!
This class is the easy and interesting. The only thing you have to do to get a good grade is PARTICIPATE if you do not participate you will not do well. Just take good notes and read the intros to each chapter and you will pass each test. I got an A even though I got C's or lower on the tests. PARTICIPATE or you're stupid get 5p a day extra credit
I was a high school senior when taking his philosophy 101 class. He was inspirational. is the best professor I have ever had... and I can still say that now that i am studying philosophy at NYU. Justus Richards was the best professor I ever had. I had to repeat that.
Extremely interesting professor with a great passion. Pay attention in class, it will make you a better person. Highly intuitive, knowledgeable. Reading and participation are musts. Tests are challenging, multiple choice, but not straight from book. Unbiased in class, but will challenge your views.
This Professor was amazing. He offers an intense dialogue which keeps you interested. Although, his tests are outrageous--'some' students were said to have done well.Attence is key if you want to learn life lessons. I failed every test, but showed up when he offered E.C.on the exam. I passed with a C and am glad to have gotten out alive.READTHEBOOK
The best teacher I have ever had.EVER. Even though tests are hard and there is a lot of reading, you can get a good grade in this class. Show interest and he will show interest in you 5fold. Very passionate teacher who speaks like he is reading out of a well written book and takes time to get to know you as a person. Amazing gentleman and scholar.
A phenomenal teacher, he loves to teach. He wants his students to learn to the best of their ability, if he has to beat them with a stick (figuratively) to get the to do it. Had him for 1 and 7. Read the book and TAKE PART IN THE DISCUSSIONS!! Participation is a HUGE part of the grade, and can literally save your grade. Amazing person in general.
Richards is a great guy and he's definitely passionate about what he teaches. The only problem is the tests are EXTREMELY difficult! If you are even the slightest bit shy and not prepared to read difficult readings thoroughly, do not take this class. He gives no homework, but that actually makes it harder to earn a good grade.
He is the most amazing person you will ever meet. He is full of wisdom, insight, the things he says will often linger in my mind at the strangest nights, while driving down the most bleak avenues in the city. I only regret never having the nerve to speak up during class. He is amazing.
AMAZING human! I wish I knew more about him. Great proffessor. He will challange ALL of u and what u stand for. READ & take notes u will be fine. Study groups help too. Participate in class and tlk to him. He is a child at heart and I will forever be greatful for his wisdom. Do not be offended by what he says he is preparing u for the real world.
great professor and great man. very passionate and very wise. cares for his students and definitely knows his stuff. keeps class interesting with arguments "for" and "against" on the given material. not easy, must read the book. highly recommend for philosophy majors!
participation is a huge part of your grade. only a couple scantron tests which are easy if you read and pay attention in class and only a couple take home assignments. this professor is the man!
Richards is the most increadible human being. He cares so much about students, is so passionate, and isn't afraid of doing what it takes to enrich people's lives. He has INCREDIBLE stories-you'll never forget them. 3 tests, no hw. Read the book-it's necessary, but also so useful for life! You'll never forget Richards; this man has a huge heart.
Challenging class! Reading comprehension from the book can be tough. Three exams, no hwk. The best professor I have ever had, learned a great deal. KNOW: PHILOSOPHER, TITLE, ARGUMENT. Don't get caught up with small details. Exams are NOT easy. Will NOT allow make-up exams for any reason (even death related). Not a last minute cramming class!
Speak your mind always. Be honest read the book. If you are not interested in learning about great thoughts from a man who has given them serious considerations, do not take this class. If you are trying to figure out any serious question regarding existence and meaning, take this class.
He keeps the atmosphere very open to discussion, occasionally letting them take over the predetermined topic. While he adheres to the textbook, he goes further, arguing as best he can for each idea and challenging others to validly argue against him. Attendance and involvement are important, as is studying the material. Overall it was beneficial.
He is an awesome and passionate instructor. He always makes the class funny, even though some jokes seem horrible. Reading book is very important to the tests. The participation is a huge part of the grade. You had better speak something during the class. Make sure study.
Buy the book, memorize the name of the philosopher and the concepts in the chapter. the tests are usually about four questions and he wants you to be able to know the last name of the philosopher and their philosophy on the specific chapter. no homework but study or you'll fail the test. and participate for points.
His lectures were pretty riveting. I never thought that I would be able to have conversations of that intensity in a classroom. I did participate a lot which helped me out in the end. I completely missed the second exam(out of three). But for some reason I got an A in his class. By the way no HOMEWORK!!!!!!!
Most amazing professor I've had so far and will always be in the back of my mind. Some of his stories may be made up but he keeps the atmosphere of the class intense and interesting. He teaches you about life and makes you think outside the box. He's a man of wisdom and knowledge. Those seeking for words of wisdom should definitely look for him.
THIS GUY IS AMAZING! Before I entered his class, I considered myself pretty open to new ideas, and I had a lot of ideas of my own (which amazingly he agreed with, without me saying any of it). He definitely appeals to those who actually want to learn and has the capacity to learn, his stories are pretty amazing, however bizarre. I'd recommend him.
Professor Richards is an AMAZING Professor. At first he is a little hard to understand but he does challenge your ideals! The text book is definately mandatory no question asked. If you are the kind of person that just sits there and takes notes you might have to change your mindset and studyplan because his exams only count for part of your grade.
Would not recommend. Not organized at all. Thinks he's some profound philosopher, is not insightful. Mostly just made up stories of his life. Dramatic. Didn't learn much.
Personality-wise, he is amicable and whimsical. He sometimes sheds tears as he gives his interesting lectures. Yet, oftentimes I had to struggle, making connections between his too-good-to-be-true stories and the readings. He encourages class discussions and he is an attentive listener. He assigns tons of readings, yet the exams are not that hard.
Sit in the front if you want to hear. He tends to whisper a lot, not a good idea to sit in the back. The final and tests for our class were debates, if you do not participate he will fail you.
the only way to pass his class is by reading the book. it's a lot of readings and not easy to understand. he's very intimidating and yells like a lunatic. on tests he'll just ask you to compare philosophers with each other, never multiple choice tests he tricks you into thinking there are but they're all written tests. he just talks about himself.
Mr. Richards is the most amazing teacher I have ever had. If you want to learn he is absolutely there for you 100%. 20 years later and I still can't forget how he changed my thinking and my life. Thank you Mr. Richards.
He is one of the most insightful professors on this campus. His lectures get to you, if you're willing to hear him out. Reading the textbook/participating is CRUCIAL if you want to pass, and you NEED to have decent to good literacy and logical ability to understand the lectures/readings. This class "might" break you, but you will learn a lot.
A couple words of warning: He's a little quiet, so sitting in the front is recommended. Also, expect him to bait you into discussing things. Still, I highly recommend him, even if I haven't finished the semester yet. He's genuinely kind and very passionate about philosophy. Try not to let yourself be intimidated by him.
I loved this professor. Class was never boring. You need to read the selections from the book because that is what he talks about in class. This is a Philosophy class participation is key. He only gave three tests including final and they were easy. As long as you read the book and take notes (Who wrote it? What was their argument?) you'll be fine
To start off, sit in the front of the class! He has a very quiet voice MOST of the time. As far as the class, be sure to read the selections and participate! In this class, it's easy to ace the tests and still receive a C is you do not participate. Class was never boring so I do not recommend skipping out a day or two.
Mr. Richards was a great Professor with a profound understanding of philosophy. He wants you to know what you personally believe and why. His lectures were always intense, insightful, and sometimes provocative. If you want to get an A, you MUST read the textbook and absolutely participate in the discussions.
Really great class. Never a boring session also great space for questioning ideas. Teacher is very passionate I recommend taking this class if your going through a tough time, the questions really help process your thoughts
AMAZING teacher. Took him one semester, had to take him again. If you read the textbook youll pass easy. Only 3 tests and they all pertain to the textbook. Readings can be difficult but thats what class lectures are for. He truly wants you to understand. If you treasure knowledge, this is the man for you. Thanks for everything professor richards
Very interesting and entertaining class. Richards has a "wonderful" sense of humor in my opinion. The book is highly recommended along with detailed notes. There are 3 major exams and he tends to constantly diversify the format of those exams. Btw, his true/false and multiple choice questions are significantly trickier than essay questions.
Provokes serious thought. Tests are all different formats: some group, some essay, some MC, etc. He will not tell you before hand.Make sure to participate!
OMG! Hardest and most stressful class ever. SO WORTH taking it, I can't even stress that enough. Prof Richards will make you think, think, think. I went in scared by all the reviews he has here which are all true, it is a hard class. He can come off as rude but it is just all the passion he has within. Thank you Prof Richards. God bless you!
BEST PROF EVER everyone should be required to take all his classes to learn about life will open ur eyes to a whole different world MUST READ mUST PARTICIPATE must attend.take advantage of office hours don't be scared to ask questions EXTREMLY kind humble helpful, really cares about students knowledge that u will carry ur whole life SUPER insightful
At first I wasn't sure I was going to like his class. He came off a little strange. But once we got going, I was engaged in the lectures and his stories (tho he does tend to go off on tangents and repeat stories you've already heard). I recommend sitting up front because he mumbles. His tests require thinking about the material not just reading it.
Not good at all. No clear grading scale. Not helpful I'm an A student and got a B Egotistical. Tells irrelevant stories that he probably makes up
I had him 2 semesters ago. I stayed pretty quiet and got an A. He told us that he is a communist. I was a great student that listened, arrived on time, turned in work, and respected him but one day he screamed at me for no reason so make sure you are careful. We had multiple debates in class and only 1 test. Lots of group work.
Such a great professor. Book is mandatory for passing, must know the texts you read. Lectures are interesting and give you a change of mindset. Very much enjoyed his class because of his lecturesstories that are most of the time relevant. Participation is a plus! Don't be shy. Ask! Ask! Ask! Such a caring intelligent professor, thanks mr. Richards
He encourages and respects students who state their opinion and ideas, be ready to defend your point of view. Class is mostly lecture,Participation is mandatory, because is the only way he knows where you stand in an argument. assigned readings and three tests some group work. Great professor.
He's a great teacher. There's a lot of reading and many short assignments. Lots of group work. Miss a class, you'll miss an assignment. He's into making you think for yourself. He'll say stuff just to rile you up, but he wants you to debate with him. So remember to speak! Bad part... no grading scale. I had no idea what my grade was all semester.
Professor Richards is respected by many of his students because he tends to speak his mind (as crazy as it may be). Make sure to participate in class discusions and actually read! Oh, and sit in the front since he speaks very softly.
Just got done taking Phil 1 with him and let me tell you he was a great professor. There were only 3 tests in total. The second and the final were in groups. He does tend to get off topic sometimes but he is a very nice guy that really cares about his students. If you don't agree with something, debate him, he loves it! extra credit for it.
Mr. Richards is the best teacher I have ever had. Unlike most professors, he understands the true importance of his role as an educator, and he changes lives. Coming out of his class, I feel like twice the intellectual I was before. If you listen to what he has to say and discuss it with him, you'll get an A and leave with invaluable wisdom.
For a lot of people, he's a hit or miss. Discussion and participation matters! Read, think, and ask questions. You're better off reading the material and forming an understanding of it rather than taking meticulous lecture notes, because sometimes classes get off topic or aren't strictly focused on the material. Good professor, pretty funny guy.
I took Richards for 3 classes, the last one being 3 years ago, and he's still the best professor I've ever had. He's inspirational; he'll even cry while telling a touching story. He REALLY knows his stuff. He walks in the classroom believing one thing that you have to argue with him about, and the next he believes the opposite and you argue that.
This guy is a trip! in a good way! Even though i thought i was gonna fail his class because it took a lot of reading, i passed with a B! But he is very inspiring and talks about a lot of stories that get you thinking. He's very expressive with his emotions. so get ready to jump at times! Group midterm and final! helped me pass!
When I first walked in , I was intimidated. He is a very amazing professor . He makes you think beyond what you've set your opinions to. Only 3 tests are given. Around 3 group projects . PARTICIPATION is your grade
Best professor I've ever had. Prof Richards truly loves what he does & takes his role as an educator extremely seriously. His wisdom opens you up to a whole different way of looking at the world. The class itself doesn't have a lot of "work", just a good amount of reading. Very generous and forgiving grader in my opinion, but engage in discussions
You 100% need to read! However since the reading list was overwhelming I stopped halfway but managed to pass the class. Take if it is your major. The tough thing about this class is that there are 3 tests and NO work, so how you do on your tests definesyour grade. He talks more about the world (interesting stuff), but it is very stressful.
Yes he is very passionate about philosophy. But he's tough. You NEED to participate in his class. It's a must. And absolutely no cellphone use. He'll deduct points. He speaks softly, but when he gets into what he's saying he'll pretty much start yelling. Read, read, read. Tough, but interesting.
IF YOU DO NOT PARTICIPATE, YOU WILL GET A BAD GRADE! (IF YOU DO PARTICIPATE, YOU WILL GET A GOOD GRADE.) Expect to read plenty of philosophy, but you will learn a lot. No other philosophy professor will teach you as much as Richards. I love speaking with him on campus and learning from him. He is my ultimate favorite professor. AMAZING!
Ok so this guy is basically the Robert California (office reference) of philosophy teachers. Everyday was like watching a theatrical play, first he's quiet then he's screaming then he's crying. He honestly cares and is intimidating, but very nice one on one. YOU MUST PARTICIPATE. You must read AND comprehend it. If you are shy STAY AWAY.
This is not an intro to philosophy. The professor is wacky but knows his philosophy. If you like to debate and argue this is the class. He seems to like when students try to challenge him and attempt to prove him wrong. This is a hard course for those never exposed to philosophy. It is really challenging with lots of reading, topics and terms.
Mr. Richards has to be one of my favorite teachers at PCC! He's hilarious, helpful, and actually gives great lectures. He loves to argue so be prepared to do that, also try to come to class early he gives out extra credit that he would put towards you test . This class is really challenging if you're closed minded.
Prof. Richards is am amazing lecturer, complete readings before class, state you opinion once in a while, he can be intimidating, but he like students to step out of their comfort zone and say something, whether you agree or not. usually 1 group project, and a two, essay format response to the lectures. Philo 01 & Philo 007
Very easy class to pass. He's a very lenient grader. I barely did the readings and did okay. He could be a bit too strange though. At times you will feel an awakening with his lectures.
His a great professor I would take him again
Richards is amazing. If you don' participate at all during his classes, he will drop 10%, but as long as you say something 2-3x you should be fine. His lectures are very passionate and enlightening. If you dont read ahead of his class, go to his office hours to discuss the readings because he really helps with understanding the material thoroughly.
he's very interesting and gets you thinking. you need to be ready to participate in discussion. You can do nothing all semester and just talk during discussion and receive an A! I honestly came to class JUST to hear the lecture.
Richards is inspirational, v passionate about philosophy. Come to class with the material read so you can participate in the discussions. 3 essay tests ONLY so study! Study groups are super helpful! The reading might be daunting but this class was so worth it. If you enjoy overthinking and a challenge, you'd definitely enjoy this class. Take him!
I took 3 philosophy courses in 1992-1993 with Professor Richards. I'm 49 years old now and can say without reservation that he changed my life. That is not hyperbole. His genuine love of wisdom is infectious, and inspired me on a lifelong journey of learning and trying to make the world a little bit better while prospering. Thank you JR!
He is a good professor . He makes you think beyond what you've set your opinions to. Only 3 tests are given. Prof Richards truly loves what he does and takes his role as an educator extremely seriously.
This is a great class if you are open to new ideas and aren't too sensitive to talk about sticky moral issues. Professor Richards will like you if you are humble, willing to defend your beliefs and ideas, and participate often in class. There are only three tests, but they're not too hard and 2 out of 3 were take home. Do the readings!
This professor honestly is so passionate about his job and students. He will go out your way to help you pass the tests. Participation really does matter, I got so much extra credit by discussing the material. Gives you lecutures you want to hear and discuss about. Hands down he best phil teacher.
One of the most amazing and intelligent professors at PCC. Do the reading and participate, guaranteed you'll pass. This class definitely changed the way I view myself and the world. Going to miss his lectures profoundly.
DO NOT DROP THE CLASSS YOU WILL PASS!
To this day, Richards is one of my favorite professors. He is dedicated to help each student if they ask. If you take good notes during his lecture, and continuously read, its an easy A. It's easy to get behind on the readings, be he is straight forward with the content that will be on the test. Don't drop the class, you will most likely pass!
The man is a LEGEND.
Honestly, take this class just for the experience of watching his lectures. Richards is a rare gem in an academic world of ideologues and agenda-pushing narcissists. I would say he's better than even Jordan Peterson (renowned psychologist and philosopher). But he grades hard and sporadically, which is why I recommend taking this class w/o credit.
He gives incredible lectures, however, he does not have a rubric on his syllabus for the semester; this means you have no idea how assignments and participation are graded, or if they even get graded. If you are considering taking his class, proceed with caution.
Put simply, more teachers should be like Richards. So glad I took his class; he is so knowledgeable about the world and ethics, doesn't get better than him! Class can be difficult if not familiar with philosophy, reading and research will guide you. ASK QUESTIONS! Tests are tricky, he makes them to his liking/on the spot. Group papers + tests.
Justus is a very great professor!!! i loved his class and i would recommend anyone to take his class. He is very wise, knowledgeable and cares deeply for his students. He is the reason why pcc is a great college!!We honestly need more professors like him. Certainly he is my favorite professor and i would love to take his class again. Dont miss out!
Be sure to read the book and participate every chance you get. He can tell if you are taking his course seriously. He's easily one of the wisest people you'll likely meet. Also be sure to understand what you are reading, since you'll be writing about it for his exams. His arguments are very solid and be sure to have an open mind. Amazing professor.
I was never bored in his class. Next semester I will take another class with him. Make sure you participate and you will get a good grade. Dont be discouraged if you dont do good at the exams. He takes participation more seriously than he takes the exams.
Professor Richards is the wisest, most sincere, passionate teacher I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. As someone who went to Northwestern University, which is a school that is said to have a tremendous philosophy department, Mr. Richards blew the teachers at that school out of the water. Your grade is almost entirely based off participation!
He was my teacher over 25 years ago. He was, and in my opinion, still is THE BEST teacher I ever had. Almost named my son after him. I am so happy to see the incredible opinions his current students have of him. I am so happy to see that he hasn't changed. God bless him.
An A occasional participation + 3 essay tests. Lecture heavy, sometimes he'll go on disturbing tangents. YouTube videos, googling and last minute studying got me good test marks. He's a smart guy and is at your disposal so asking questions benefits you. If you don't get something YouTube will seriously save you.
Professor Richards is interesting. His class lectures are delivered enthusiastically, however their accuracy or relativity to the actual reading he assigns/ tests are questionable. I cannot say I necessarily enjoyed this class, but if you enjoy a lot of self reading or philosophy maybe this is a good choice for you. Some exams were group exams.
Richards takes teaching to a whole other level when it comes to students actively participating class. Reading is essential, if you read and use critical thinking this class is a very doable A. Participation is also really important, if you are shy I wouldn't recommend this class. Get in the habit of participating every day. You will learn a lot
I took Professor Richard's Philosophy 7 class for fun and it was one of the best and most stressful class I have ever taken. It was difficult for me due to how his exams are very random. He will be giving you a list of things to study but the type of test can vary from full in-class-essay to a 50 question true or false, or even a group test.
Tried to crash this course because of the amazing reviews but at the end of the day I was glad there wasn't enough space for me to add bc the times that I was in his class, I had no clue where we were and it is extremely difficult hearing him if you're not in the front, since he likes to whisper. he just talks the whole class time as his lecture.
One of the most interesting professors that you will have. SUPER important to read and study the textbook and websites on the syllabus. Very intimidating lectures. One moment you can barely hear him, the next moment he's screaming about his secret agency operations or how he's a martian. Exciting class but don't expect an A if you're quiet.
i took professor richards for philosophy 7 and my god, he was the most intelligent, most amazing professor i have ever had. the work he gives is difficult, and you do have to work for a good grade, but he makes it worth it and so fun. participation is one of the main grades, you must question what he says constantly. 10/10 would 100% take him again
Geniunely do not understand the good ratings for prof. Richards. He isn't a supportive or understanding teacher, won't bend the rules for ANY emergency and doesn't give clear grading criteria or rubric. The class isn't necesarily hard as long as you read the book, however his lectures usually drift too far away from the topic. Don't expect an A.
His lectures are pretty amusing. There is a lot of reading.
Half of the time, I had no clue what was going on, to be honest with you. He talks in analogies and sometimes gets sidetracked. Hes a bit out there, but in a good way. Take him, easy A for me. Just be ready to write a lot! (In my experience)
Seriously amazing. Was afraid I was going to be bored taking an intro to philosophy course. Nope. His lectures are wild, but fun, and he gets the students involved. Participation matters, but if you have ever wanted to argue with a teacher this is your chance. He likes when students challenge and add new ideas to a discussion. Best prof. I've had.
