not hard, easy, just do your work, and you'll get an A, she's always willing to give extra help during office hours.
nice, cares, provides additional help. Just do the work and you'll be fine. Reasonable grader, not difficult to get an A. Learn a lot, very helpful.

this woman is VERY hard.. only take this course if chemistry is one of your strong subjects and you are looking for her challenge.. i hear her labs are incredibly hard.. so i recommend staying away from her labs unless the other ones are COMPLETELY filled up...
Well, I haven't been regular visitor to the class but on the rare occassions that I have been there..I have been exposed to some interesting chemistry and despite knowing everything in this class I still got an A-. Ig you work appropriately, you'l get your marks and she is veryhelpful if you don't go 5 minutes before the test to ask the questions.
Good teacher. She wants the students to learn more than anything. Widera wants all of her students to do well and will help you whenever you need it. Tests are fair, and she's a very good grader. Probably one of the better chem teachers here, so i recommend taking her.
Pretty fair for chem 111, kicks it up a notch for 2nd semester. She goes on a rampage with the concepts. It's very difficult because she doesnt have enough time to go over many math related problems, and that is whats on the test (averages are very low) She also doesnt know what problems are hard for her students... Good for semester1, not 2.
Dr. Widera is an awsome prof. She really cares about her students. She is always there to help you in class and during her office hours. Unlike some prof, she doesn't make you feel stupid if you ask a question. So never hesitate to go and ask. Her tests are very fair. She is a fair grader.Ppl who say bad things about her just don't do their work!:)
Oh she is very nice person but her tests make no sense. The book's questioning is diffrent from her tests. The final was impossible and the review packets had nothing to do with the final. Just watch out and its not worth taking her.
You'll realize how bad of a professor she is if you take any other chemisty class without her. She plays favorites, gets flustered easily and doesn't explain the concepts clearly. Her lectures go by power point which she reads word for word... that's just lazy. She is also full of herself.
Ok, well i went on ratemyprofessor before i made my schedule and it seemed as though widera was the only good science professor WRONG!!!!!!! big mistake they all are horrible what do we pay thousands of dollars for serouisly? Shes so bad dont even think about taking her, she rushes, she gives no partial credit, and shes so concieted!! ew what a **
Accent. Gives a lot of work. Very Strict. And not very helpful
She's a lousy teacher. She just reads from her power point or from the textbook but she sucks at explaining from both. i don't understand the words that are coming out of her mouth and her tests are horrible. if everyone fails the test then that means you suck as a teacher.
Very nice, one of the good professors around, if not the best. And don't listen to those lazy and ignorant people blabering the non-sense, she is the best chemistry teacher you can find here. Don't hesistate to question, otherwise you cannot learn. Don't hesistate to see her outside of the classroom, she can be as helpful as you can wish ^__^
Had her for chem lab, Loved her! answers all questions with ease and really can help you learn. Shes a great role model inside the classroom and out. AMAZING Fashion sense too lol
Took her 111 and 112 lab during Fall08 and Spring09. Demanding and sometimes annoying, but grades are better than what ppl deserve and you learn alot.
She is kind of dilusional the second semester. She expects every one to know calculus when its not even a pre requisite. 1st semester shes not terrible but dont take her second semester. And dont take her for lab
not that good, first semester yes, second no way! she tries to try and tie the powerpoint and her work together doesnt work. SEEMS NICE but really not that nice expects a lot, and if youve been taking chem all your life. DONT TAKE SECOND SEMESTER
Not terrible, but not the best teacher. You really have to teach yourself the material because she rushes through it. And for the tests, study really hard! Do every problem in the textbook. Do all of the homework/extra credit- I got an A because she saw I worked hard.
This is for the lab section. Compared to how much easier the other professors are in the lab, she's not worth it. She expects a lot and doesn't cut out anything in the lab. I heard she's great in lecture though.
She rushes through every topic like there's no tomorrow. Only thing she cares about is her looks. Shes a great lab instructor but a terrible professor. Be ready to teach yourself the course, because she cant teach.
Dr. Widera is a very smart and nice person who really cares about all her students. Yes, she goes over material fast, but that's because there's a lot to cover. If you need help, just ask her during office hours.
She is easy professor maybe not for quant.
She can be a bit intimidating but good class otherwise. The class is easy to keep up with if you have prior knowledge of chemistry.
Widera is a great professor. she is tough but fair, she is fast with lectures, gives great notes & prepares you well for her tests & gives practice tests before each exam. she uses ALEKS which is time consuming but helps you learn. easy and laid back in gen chem lab. overall a great professor, take her if you want to learn!
Dr. Widera is my fave chem professor here. She has so much personality and she's really funny! The class itself had 3 tests and a final. In addition, there was online and occasional written homework. She gave several opportunities for extra credit. The quizzes are easy to mess up bc they're only one or two questions. Overall a very good professor.
Tough lady, tougher grader. Tends to favor those who are chemistry majors. Had her for lab and lecture at one point and I can say she is slightly more laid back in the lab setting but don't be late as she does not tolerate it
Although she teaches at a fairly fast pace, she constantly asks students if they understand. She wants you to participate and ask questions. She does give a lot of homework, but it definitely helps for the tests and helps understand the material. The tests are about what you learn, no surprises. Gives MANY examples about the material to help.
if you are a chemistry or biochemistry major...100% take her. you will be lost and behind in quant analysis !!!
Professor Widera is amazing and you will get to learn alot from her. Although she gets irritated really easily, she is accessible outside of class and willing to help. Her lectures are boring and exams are a bit tough, but if she sees that you are trying, then she definitely helps! I definitely recommend her for chem 111!!
Many people praise her for chem 111 so maybe she is better for the first half, but she was awful for 112. Completely unorganized, careless, and barely got through the material. Everything was incredibly rushed at the end and we had no time to absorb the material. Her grading curve is favorable, thats the only good thing about this class.
She is a very tough professor especially if you are not a chemistry major. Be ready to dedicate many many hours a day to the online homework if you wish to finish it. One test is generally easy the other is extremely difficult and the final is a standardized test that is very hard. I would not recommend taking her.
Basically, she reads off her slides and doesn't know how to explain things. If you're willing to go home and teach yourself Chemistry take her, otherwise she won't be good for you. She gives terrible examples & has an accent. Goes through the material like no tomorrow & gets mad when you don't understand. Then when you ask a question she gets mad.
Let me start by saying I am a good student - not a slacker. With a lot of effort put in, her online homework was absolutely ridiculous. Takes hours to do, unhelpful and unclear. She is a rude woman, doesn't explain chemistry well, and she's not looking to be helpful. I think I would have done better if I had seen her more for office hours.
it's kind of ridiculous how much online homework she assigns in this class and how little i've learned from it.
She is the worst professor I have ever had in my college career. She does not care about you understanding the material only covering it. She can be disrespectful towards students. If Chemistry is not your major dont take her class. HORRIBLE
Must put in A LOT of work.
Chemistry has been my worst subject in college. I had to retake the class, due to not being taught the material and understanding it the first time around. She is a great professor and actually teaches her students and wants to make sure you understand the concepts and do well. I left this class with my confidence regained in chemistry.
She'd pressure us to go on the board to try the problems but then embarrasses us when were having a hard time solving it. Her tests were EXTREMELY difficult and proudly admits she tries to "Trick" us on the exams. She gives a study guide but they don't relate to her tests. Only 6 students passed the class this semester.
She will embarrass you every chance that she gets, if you dont know something off the bat then shell look down on you. She refuses to explain if you dont understand anything, and overall I really dont recommend her if you want to learn to understand chemistry.
60% of your grade is exams: she gives a practice test before each exam (total of 2 then ACS final), and one of the practice won't look like the actual test. Textbook isn't needed. Be ready to teach yourself using ALEKS. Goes through her slides at the speed of light and still is somehow behind on her syllabus.
This teacher has no sympathy and doesn't realize that not everyone understands chem on the same level as her. She moves way too fast and if you don't understand, good luck trying to get an answer out of her. There are only 3 tests and online/in class homework. I do not recommend this professor to anyone who will take chem111 at Adelphi.
She is the absolute worst teacher I have ever came across. She gives 2 tests throughout the semester with study guides that are NOTHING like the actual test, she makes fun of you when you don't understand what she's talking about , she could care less about her students. She goes through powerpoint so fast you can't even comprehend it. STAY AWAY
She never posts grades so you have no clue how you are doing. We take the ACS final at the end of the semester when we haven't even finished all the topics needed for the exam. She didn't prepare us for it whatsoever. If you don't have prior knowledge of chem and you don't learn things at the speed of light like how she teaches, you will fail.
She does not care about her students and tends to favor some and belittle others. There are two tests designed to make you fail and ALEK homework is often excessive and not beneficial. Her other homeworks are often not easy to complete & graded wierdly. I took AP Chem in high school and still found it very hard to do well in her class. Good luck.
This teacher does not test your knowledge at all. Objectively I am good at chemistry yet I have 2.0 in the class because she posted wrong homework names and then blamed me for submitting the wrong homework. She spends more time coming up with analogous and writing late names down then teaching chem. It's just kinda sad, heartless, and disgusting.
The worst teaching experience I've ever had. Not only does she make you dread class due to her lack of explanation and visible irritation upon getting asked any question, but she made an already hard subject so much more complex than it needs to be. Barely prepared us for the final and taught from a different textbook than she told us to purchase!
This professor does not like her job at all. She mad regret taking her everyday. I am a very good student that gets straight A's and I put in all the effort and extra time, but at the end of the day her tests are so hard and are not even relevant to what we learned. Also, she will make so many errors during grading and not change it, but will argue
Imma keep this short and simple. If you think you know chem, you don't know chem. Taking her lecture is equivalent with swan diving into an empty pool. Nothing makes sense and you will just end up in the hospital. The chem department is a hit or miss, so at this rate pick your poison.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. RUN. This professor does not care about anyone but her self. Her exam is nothing like the lectures and she gets mad when you ask her questions. She also blames the whole class. She is rude and disrespectful. She does not care if your in the hospital , she still want her work done. She will make you cry.
Took 3 tests including the final which make up your whole grade, speaks basically to herself all class long, refuses to answer questions, very rude and unempathetic
You will need to teach yourself everything, does not explain herself well when you ask questions, teaches at a very fast pace and isn't a fair grader.
Taking Dr. Widera for Quantitative Analysis. While she speaks quick and moves fast pace, I go to office hours (helps alot) and I am showing her I care and trying my best. I think long as you show improvement throughout the semester, you shall be fine. She really knows chemistry well and maybe at times can come off rude, she certainly wants to help
Gives a lot of information very fast in a very short amount of time. Only had 2 tests that were drastically different from each other in terms difficulty. Let us drop one test and double the final though. She just goes very fast and its not always easy to understand, but if you take time to study you should be fine.
you need a 70 and up to actually go onto the next chem class. doesnt matter if you pass with a 60. her tests are really hard. the homework was fair. lectures are very heavy. im talking the powerpoints will have about 200+ slides in them. the final is supposed to be curved but she doesnt curve. choose another professor.
First test was based on the practice test and the second was completely different from the practice test. She took her time teaching in the beginning and near the end of the semester, went through everything really fast to finish all her powerpoints. She is also very rude, when I was hesitant to answer a question, she said some people are too shy.
She speaks too fast and treats every topic like it's already been taught. Has Aleks which is expensive. Also she tests us only thrice (midterm, exam, final). She gives us the choice to drop out one of the two exam grades (midterm, exam) and doubles the final exam grade. Never answers any question. The former two exams are harder, final is easier.
She is the best of all general chemistry professors in the department, but she is still not the best professor. She gets upset with you for asking clarifying questions or if you don't understand the material too well and she doesn't explain some concepts too well. The grade for her class is 65% based on tests, so be careful
Worst professor you will ever have. Don't bother asking her for an extra boost in your grade. If you get a 79 you stay at a 79 and if you get an 89 you won't get a 90. She is intimidating, gets frustrated if you don't understand the material immediately, and tests are 65% of your grade. Homework are 10%, meaning they don't even matter
Dr. Widera is here to teach, not be your friend. She will not show mercy on your grade. That being said, you have to work for it. I encourage all chemistry majors to take her for general chemistry. She is a senior faculty member and highly respected. Show her you care and want to succeed and she will acknowledge this and help you out.
Only graded on 2 tests and 1 final. The first test is the practice test, the second test is hard, but she gives the option to drop one grade and double the final. Take someone else if you can.
If your looking to enjoy your life please don't take Widera. She is horrible at explaining concepts and blames it on our generation. She picks random students to do problems on the board and claims to help you when in reality she will just make a fool out of you. Don't bother asking her to change any grades. She is right no matter what.
Yes she is stern but the reviews are ridiculous. If you go to her office hours, study outside of class, and do the ALEKS as you learn new material in class, you will be fine. Put some effort in and show her you care.
Professor Widera is a person who could very well be canonized by the Church because of the charity she gives to students. Practice-tests with questions that will be on the test, review sessions, office hours, etc. Love her!!!!!
she is rude, and has no manners. do not take her.
she is mean and she really does not have any manners. someone needs to teach her how to speak to students. she yells at you if you don't know the answer and then she confuses you by humiliating you.
she was teaching a difficult topic and was like "if you dont know how to do this then pack your bags" like what professor says that
Had her for back to back semesters, more experience than anybody. Her tests, easy as apple pie on a summer night. Her classes, fun and comfortable. Take her if you have the chance.
I you can avoid taking a class with her, AVOID TAKING A CLASS WITH HER. She gives out a lot of information very quickly and assigns a lot of homework. She is a VERY tough grader, if you make even the smallest mistake she will take so many points off. And don't waste your time trying to get an explanation out of her or to negotiate a grade.
Let this be a warning. If you are a mediocre student this class will take over your life. Teaches at warp speed and expects everyone to understand topics right away. She is a very tough grader. Tests are impossible. Do not fall behind on ALEKS or you're doomed. Doesn't curve the ACS even though it is designed to be. doesn't believe in extra credit.
Had her for both semesters of gen chem and she was awful. the first time she gave me a bad final grade and when I calculated my own grade she was an entire letter grade off, which she ended up fixing after I told her. She doesn't filter her ALEKS to only stuff she teaches. She is rude, hard to understand, and unsympathetic. DO NOT TAKE HER EVER!!
I had professor Widera for both semesters of chem and her class was extremely tough. Although she is rude, disorganized, rushes through lectures, and does not know how to teach any concepts, it is not impossible to do well in her class. As long as you fully commit to reading the textbook and teaching yourself everything, you will be ok.
Took GenChem 1&2 with her. It isn't that she wants her students to fail, it's that she expects way too much from them. Prepare to do a lot of self-teaching. If you make an effort: come up to the board when she asks for volunteers/go to her office hours, she will recognize your effort, but don't get me wrong, she's TOUGH. Take at your own risk.
The negative reviews here are misleading. best teacher highly recommend! Super friendly and nice. Pretty fast, but you have to if you want to cover everything. Wants you to do well, gives lots of resources. Weekly quizzes but there's a chance to get full pts back/2 tests+1 optional which replaces your lowest test. put in effort and you will be fine
OK so Widera is a FAST teacher. expect to run through 120 slides a lecture and cover about 1.5 topics a week. She does teach well and if you do the work and understand the practice questions she gives you will do fine. You get weekly homework and quizzes that are based on her slides. She just wants to see you apply yourself.
She's so mean for no reason. This is a very difficult class to start with and she only makes it worse. Can be helpful at times but really expects perfection on stuff we went over for 2 minutes. Why become a professor if you're not willing to improve and adapt with your students needs.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. I think the 5 rating are people being payed by her.
she is nice if you show effort. her practice exams are similar to her exams but they are still very hard. she doesnt put grades on moodle so its scary
If there was a church of chemistry, Widera should be excommunicated from it. She publicly humiliates students, grades disproportionately, and has unclear slides and teaching methods. ALEKS is a financial scam. Only uses the raw score on the ACS final. Don't let a few good experiences silence all the bad ones. AVOID AT ALL COST I BEG U!!!
Would not recomment taking at all!
I never wore my seatbelt while driving to school because I wanted to D*E before making to her class
Don't take her
Idk why she has such a low rating- she's not that bad. She's not a native English speaker so sometimes her sentence structure doesn't make sense but you get the gist of what she's saying. Weekly quizzes but they aren't hard.
she's simply not good at teaching. she just speeds through the slides and expects you to do 32 ALEKS topics on stuff she hasn't covered in like 2 days as if you don't have other classes. i had to teach myself half of the course. would not recommend
just terrible. please please avoid her. Just look at all the open seats available to take her class, that just says everything.Had to teach ourselves the material all semester. Doesn't tell us what the quiz is going to be on or will tell us what it is but complete different topic when taking it. Use the most complicated website for homework.
Yes, the homework site (ALEKs) was a bit much bc she didn't filter topics we didn't need to learn, but overall, she actually taught things we needed to know and was a fair grader. Go to office hours!! Also, her quizzes were every Monday, so don't know what last person was talking abt. If you get to know her, she's a nice person.
I would not have passed General Chemistry if I didn't have some background knowledge. She does gets through the entire syllabus but rushes through some parts. She doesn't care or make accommodations for most circumstances. She can be a really hard professor to work with but if you keep on top of assignments and weekly quizzes, you'll be fine.
Personally, I really enjoyed her class. She has a great sense of humor, and she can explain concepts better than the textbook. Generally, you won't have to memorize much (unless she says to) because she'll give reference tables. Also, the questions on her quizzes/exams are exactly like the ones in the lectures and practice exams, so practice those!
She is horrible as a professor don't take her stay away from her as far as possible. She is bribing her students to take her next semester because she has many seats open. She is absolutely horrible in teaching ,she teaches as if u know the concepts without actually teaching. She Flys through the slides in lectures and u won't understand and thing.
This mightve been the worst course ive ever taken in my life ( and ive had a lot of bad teachers) please stay as far away as you can. if u need a comparison to what her class feels like its like hitting ur shin and ankle with a scooter over and over again.
By the end of the course it was extremely easy to study for the ACS because the class prepared us so well for the test. She was also very generous with the curve on the ACS final. She really cares and if you go to her office hours or talk to her after class you'll do well in the class.
Hello, to all adelphi Biology/Biochem students required to take any chemistry course. STAY AWAY from widera. even if Adelphi tells you to take it with Biology to be on track for graduation, you are better off just taking another general education course or remaining at 12 or more credits (if you need full time status for scholarships).don't take!
Please don't take her. I tried to ignore the reviews and give her a chance but she's just mean and rude. Will make you feel bad and call you out in front of the class if you try to ask questions. The homework is ridiculous. Will not tell you what will be on the weekly quizzes.
Hardest class I've ever taken and she offers little help/sympathy
just don't take her.
I had Professor Widera again for gen chem 2 and was adapted to her teaching style. It was more math heavy than gen chem 1 which I personally liked. Even when she was out for a week, we were still able to cover the entire syllabus required for the ACS. Very straightforward in teaching, many problem examples. Please ignore the bad comments.
She's a really good professor who cares, you just have to put in the work. She has extra credit and a top up exam that really helps your grade. She also made sure we finished the Stella bus for the ACS exam
I had her for gen chem 2, and the class was a bit difficult for me since I didn't take gen chem 1. She is nice but I wouldn't take her again since her teaching style is way too fast for my liking. This class isn't an easy A so you have to put the effort.
She is actually horrible. Do not take her. She doesn't explain anything in her classes and grades awfully. She will say she gives you partial points on problems but will be so stingy to give you anything. Don't take her if you want to have a life.
Easily the worst teaching experience I've had in 13 years of school. Her explanations are unclear, she raises her voice, and she makes students feel stupid instead of supported. Learning feels impossible. This class shows exactly how a teacher should NOT behave. Trust me—without the character limit, I'd write paragraphs about how bad, evil she is.
She's just, no. She has her days where she's doable, but a majority of times she's unapproachable & miserable with her job. She goes through the material too quickly. She also strays away from lecture to complain about her personal life. Do your sanity and your grade a favor, choose a different professor, it's not worth your time with her. BIPOLAR!
TBH, she's a complete asshole but as long as you don't slack and you do your hw/quizzes and study for the two tests she gives plus the ACS, the class is an easy A at least
Professor Widera is knowledgeable but presents the material in a poor and disorganized way. Be prepared to teach yourself this course and find help. As someone who did not take chem in high school, this was a nightmare. I barely passed this class but the thing that saved me was my participation. She likes to see that you're putting in effort.
