He explains things very thoroughly. If you write down everything he says, you practically won't even need the book. He writes comments in the book for you as well...which are also really helpful in case you miss something.
This guy was RAD! He has a great sense of humor. His tests are hard and you have to pay attention, but his notes in the text are helpful.
Umm....his tests suck. I thought Rock N Roll would be fun to study, but the class is boring. Bla bla bla
Test are very hard, even with study guide. His lectures are at times very boring.
This is the best class that I have taken at the U. Why is this class so interesting? Because it is obvious that Costa is passionate about what he is teaching-that makes the subject interesting. Lets you see how different types of music are all rela
Costa is awesome! This class is really fun because you can tell he loves what he teaches. There is a lot of material though, and the tests are hard, but it's worth it. Plus he's hot!
He doesnt want any questions asked..ever! His tests are extremely hard!!He expects you to know more than he teaches. This class sounds like fun which sometimes (rarely) it is but i wouldnt advise taking it and I know MANY others who feel the same!!!
he isn't clear as to what he wants you to know for his tests. his t.a. is a jerk as well. i think they laugh at how hard he makes his lame tests
Test are dang hard! You would have to read the book like 10 times to catch the details he expects you to remember
This class was so much fun! The tests are easy as long as you go to class and take good notes.
Class is fun and enjoyable, but the test are KILLER! Wants you to know the smallest details. If you can take it credit/no credit, you will be fine. If you take it for a grade, don't expect to get better than a B in the class.
Lots of info. Great class Great Teacher. Go to class, take good notes, use his study guides, you'll get an A.
Thanks to Costa I now know lots of useless information. I never missed a class because it was so entertaining. This guy knows his stuff. Yes, it is true it is not an easy A his test are hard.
He is very passionate. Be prepared to take notes every second of the three hour class. Tests are very detailed, but not particularly difficult.
If you just attend and pay attention, you'll have a laugh and learn a lot of great music history.

I enjoyed the class overall but agree that it was difficult to know what he expected one to know for the test. The test was a mix of questions regarding events that had major impacts on music and mundane details that were insignificant in the big picture. Nevertheless I loved the class and got a good grade by attending each class and taking notes.
Sounds like an easy class but it isn't. Tests are impossible and ridiculous. I spent more time studying so I could get a good grade in this stupid general than in most of my science classes.
History of Rock 'n Roll has to be my all time favorite class. The tests definitely aren't easy, but I don't think that the class is as difficult as some people make it out to be. I actually ENJOYED going to this class every day. I wish there was an upper division History of Rock 'n Roll class! Haha. I'd take it in a heartbeat.

Tests are unbelievably hard. I took great notes, went to every single class, and had a study group and no one got better than a C. Music is great, I some cds from all of the songs we studied. TESTS ARE RIDICULOUS!!!
The class is extremely interesting but the topics aren't balanced well and he basically ignores rock after Nirvana (that's more than a decade!). The tests are also much more difficult than they need to be.
Sweet class if you're into rock, terrible class if you're looking for a grade. Tests are difficult and irrelevant to the lectures. But a very interesting class.
He really knows his stuff, but don't think you'll be getting an easy A. If you take good notes and actually study them, you'll do well. I recommend this for anyone who is interested in music.

if you go, take good notes, and pay attention, youll do good. you may have to go a step furthur and talk to him in his office or ask a bunch of questions if your looking for that A which in this class is far from easy.
I loved this class. He is so passionate about what he teaches! The tests are WAY hard.. If you go to class and take way good notes you'll do ok. I like the professor but HATE the way he does his tests...they are way hard
i dont know why everyone is complaining about this class. i went most of the time and wrote down what he said was important. then if you study the notes a couple of hours the day before, you can finish the tests easily.
Yeah, the tests are hard, but this guy's so passionate about the subject that he'll help you out. Plus, if you study a few hours the day before, you'll be good. Overall, the class is awesome. You learn a ton and any class that has a professor dance the twist on stage is worth it.
Great teacher! This class was the highlight of my semester. Professor Costa has an incredible passion for music and you can feel it when he teaches. If you are interested in music and need a fine arts credit, this class is a must.
The tests are beyond hard. I went to almost every class, took notes, and still struggled to get above a C- on exams. It's interesting, but probably not worth the shot to the GPA.
Great teacher, great class. I was very, very impressed. Best professor in my undergraduate career, I reckon.
These people couldn't be more wrong. Stay away from the people who have "pre-distributed" tests and you'll be fine. He puts out so much information for you..book, all notes on webct, and he encourages dialogue..I got this mysterious A that many people have written about...just show up and pay attention..fun!
Don't take this class. The facts are interesting, but its almost impossible to get an A. TEacher is very careless about his students and has an ego. Doesn't communicate very well, just give huge 100 point multiple choice tests, so memorize everything he lecteud an hour and a half on over 6 pages singled spaced a day. Stay away from this class.
This class is the best. Teaching a Rock and Roll history class has the potential to be really lame, but not this one. He teaches you the real history and not just his fav bands. He speaks and moves in a way that keeps one interested. I wish he was a member of my family. He has the vibe of a cool uncle. I got a B, and I never studied.
The class must have gotten easier. There is no text the notes are just posted on WebCT and he is the most interesting teacher I have ever had. He is so exited about the subject and it felt like I was going to see a movie or some other form of entertainment for 80 minutes twice a week! Highly recommend it!
kind of a jerk, but knows his stuff. not very friendly, but an easy class
if you do the review sheets and look over them more than once before the test you will do just fine. its a very fun and interesting class and he knows his rock and roll
a jerk who knows his stuff. class is not necessary, which was nice. a lot was not covered that should have been, such as great and historical bands.
Best class ever! So easy! If you do the reviews and study them you will do amazingly on the tests! Reviews exact questions on tests. Best class i ever took, very entertaining.
Awesome class! If you like music, you'll love the History of Rock and Roll. There's no homework, and only 4 tests (which do require quite a bit of memorization, but he does give you review sheets and takes the questions from them for the tests). Plus, Dr. Costa is a really cool guy and a great instructor. Take this class!

great class!
History of Rock 'n Roll is one of the coolest classes ever. It's not exactly an easy class, as you have to memorize a lot of things, but it's definitely fun and interesting, and it's a class you actually WANT to go to.
Teacher wrote his own book that you need to have to pass the class but you can't sell it back to the bookstore. If you try to ask him about it, he doesn't respond to your emails. However, if you do the review sheets in the book and study them a bit, you'll no doubt pass the class without even going.
Great class for music lovers. Requires tons of studying and perhaps some prior knowledge for success. The teacher is a bit eccentric but he made me laugh a lot. Study study study but enjoy the music; it's the best part.
This class was interesting. I learned music trivia. This class is an easy fine arts credit. The tests are multiple choice.
Expectation was a fun break from the more difficult classes I was taking. Ended up being the worst of them all. Professor writes his own textbook and charges $75 (which I personally thing is ridiculous). It is just a compalation of notes. And he comes out with a new one frequently that "must" be used. Asking questions was useless in this class.
Was the most animated and interesting professor I've ever had or heard of. Taught course material wonderfully. Must take nearly immaculate notes, and memorize everything you can from them
Don't even bother doing the homework/study guide. It has nothing to do with what is on the test. Tests are kick butt even when you study hard. You really have to want to learn in depth and do out side research in order to receive any sort of passing grade above a C.
Amazing teacher! He has a true passion for what he is teaching and finds a way to bring his subject to life in a way that's easy to understand. A definite must for anyone who has a passion towards the subject of rock and roll music.
Quit complaining that tests are hard. It's not kindergarten, it's college. Just because it's history of rock and roll doesn't mean it's a free pass to an A. His lectures are fabulously entertaining. He's a quirky guy, funny to watch. The class was very in-depth and I learned a ton (and I knew a lot to begin with). Had some great discussions with him about The Beatles after class.
This class was an amazing. You can tell that he really enjoys teaching it, which gets you excited to learn. You need to do the study guides its almost exactly what is on the test. For those saying that its not important obviously never opened the book or looked at the study guide. Overall this was a awesome class.
THe professor knows a lot about the subject and is passonate about it, but I absolutley hated this class. You need to memorize the worksheets in the book in order to do well on the test. I know there are a lot of people that really enjoy this class, but it just wasn't for me.
Very extensive knowledge about Rock n roll. No assignments. Very good teacher, but the grades depend soley on tests, though you have plenty of time to study for them. Nobody goes to the lectures, and they aren't mandatory nor particularly useful, but they're the most fun lectures on campus. Just wait 'til you hear him blast Iron Maiden.
Very good professor! You can tell how much he is into Rock And Roll by how enthusiastic he is when he teaches. Lectors are fun but not needed, the text book is a must if you dont go to the lectures. Exams are your only grades and he gives you 1 week to finish them!
He is an amazing professor.. I have a lot of respect for him. He memorized all the lectures and kept them interesting. Easy to get a good grade.
This class was super easy. The tests are now all online and if you get the book, you'll get really good grades. Even the final is online! Cool class, cool teacher. One thing, though. He doesn't let you use your cell phones or computers really. He gets mad if he thinks anyone is texting.
This is an extremely entertaining class! You do not have to go to class. If you aren't interested in the material and want an easy A, this class is for you.
This class is super super easy and very interesting! I went to the class every time because I'm really interested in music and Costa is fun to listen to. You're not required to go to class, but I highly recommend going. Your grade is based on the tests, which are online and open-book. Easy A and fun class.
Very knowledgable and made the class fun and entertaining
This guy is awesome, all the hate is just thanks to the kids that take the class thinking it will be an easy A. Go to class and use the study guides and you will do great, and lets be honest, History of Rock and Roll...is there a cooler subject??
Great class! Professor really knows what he is talking about. You don't have to go to the lectures to get an A but I did because he is the best lecturer I have had so far!
Costa is a champ. Dude has hit the reefer plenty of times and I'm sure some other stuff... Hey, he knows everything about the subject. Loves to cuss and dance. Easiest and BEST class at the U.
Interesting and easy class! Costa's outlines in his book are identical to his lectures. Attendance isn't mandatory - your entire grade is based off of 5 tests, which are all open-book and taken through CANVAS. I highly recommend this class for a fine arts credit - you will get an A and learn a lot.
Boring lectures, all information online or in textbook. Not a good class to have in the morning, no class participation, no visual teaching aids/pure lecture.
Easy class, you have 4 test 100 pts each and you use the book to answer them. But the hard part is finding the answers. You have to buy the book which sucks because its really expensive. You dont really have to even show up to class, its kind of pointless.
Easy A for sure! Buy the book online, copy and paste selected chapters into word and search and find the answers. It still takes several hours to take test (finding answers takes a while, his way to make tests more challenging?) but you have 24 hours. After first test I completely stopped going to class and still got 100% on all tests.
Overall an easy and fun class. The exams are all online and you have 24 hours to do them. Luckily they are open book, otherwise they would be very hard, even if you went to all the lectures.
The class is easy but he makes the tests much harder than they should be. If you don't absolutely love rock and roll i'd find a different class. The only time commitment is for the tests which you have 24 hours to complete. I spent around 3-6 hours on each exam searching for the answers in the book. I stopped going to the class after first week.
Only went the first week. Tests take a long time, and are difficult, but you can get an A if you just put effort into it
Easy class, super chill guy, cool class. I stopped going after the 1st week and still got an A. Only thing that is required is an open book online test that is available for 24 hours. It takes about 3-4 hours to search through the book & find it, but it's only 4 times the entire semester. Worth it. Take this class, you won't regret it.
Costa's lectures are straight from his book so attending class was not necessary. His tests are fairly easy, just make sure you highlight your book so it's easier for you to take the test. We had 4 overall tests and no other assignments. Take this class with him!!
Easy class. Final grade is still made up from 5 open book tests requiring 2-4 hours each. Textbook required. Attendance isn't necessary. I wouldn't attend at all, except I feel bad for the guy because nobody shows up! He is really knowledgable and passionate about the subject. Does not allow phones in class and adamant about it! TAKE THIS CLASS!
Easiest fine arts class there is. I went to syllabus day only and still got an A. Tests are all online and you have 24 hrs to take it with no time limit.
This class was a really easy fine arts credit. You definitely never have to go to class. There are five tests which are all online (24 hours unlimited time, they were on Monday for my class) and word for word from the book. I do recommend buying the online text, people use ctrl+f to make the tests go by faster.
Costa is the best! He is so passionate and loves music. He plays music samples in class and sometimes he even dances. He swears and has a great sense of humor. Definitely a great class! No assignments and only 4 tests which are all online and have a 24 hour time limit. He makes this class as easy as possible because he wants you to pass!!!
Funny, interested teacher. History of Rock'n Roll was by no means a hard class, but it definitely required showing up to class, or at LEAST heavily reading the notes in the book. Most of the test answers are directly in the book, so with enough looking its not too hard of a class.
Super boring class, but it's not attendance based. Only 5 exams that are online and open book. All the questions come straight from the review sheet that goes along with the book.
There are five tests and that is what makes up your grade. Getting the textbook is great, because he wrote it and the tests are all centered around the tests. This is a course that you don't really need to go to class. It's an easy course to get credit in.
You don't really need to show up to this class at all. The textbook has all of the answers to the online tests which you have 24 hours to take. If you don't need the textbook, don't buy it.
I went to this class once before the first exam. Easiest thing of my life. He reads straight out of the book and it's kind of a joke.
I went to this class for the first two days. Seriously the easiest A you can get. The tests are really long though. It takes few hours to get through them, but the answers are word for word from the textbook. It's definitely worth it considering you never actually have to go to the class though.
If you need a FF course, & you don't take this class, you're wrong. Attendance is not mandatory, but the $100 book is worth it for the 5 open book exams. Costa's awesome, and gives hilarious & informative lectures. Just don't interrupt him or have out your phone, or he will be quick to correct you. Very interesting guy, so chat him up when you can.
Easiest class I have taken in my life. 5 take home, open book tests all semester. NO HOMEWORK. Class is fun with the samples of music he plays. Attendance is not mandatory at all.
Prof Costa is great! Our grade was made up of 5 tests that were online and the questions were all from our study guides. I would definitely recommend doing the study guides, it makes the tests so much easier. Prof Costa is very passionate about music and he always encourages students to pursue music they like.
Costa knows his stuff! He loves the subject and loves teaching. His tests are pretty tough, just be sure to purchase the textbook and do the review questions!
Super easy class! Only assignments are 5 online/take home tests throughout the semester. Doesn't grade on participation so it doesn't matter if you don't show up for class. Easiest fine arts credit by far!
Only 5 open book online tests and you don't need to show up. Basically you have to just get a hold of a one of the newer versions of the book( or borrow the copy from the library the day of the test) and look through it to get the answers but it ends up taking around 4 hours. If you're OK with taking hour long tests take this class.
The class is extremely easy. Attendance is non mandatory (ex. the class started with around 150 people coming to class by the end of the semester there was 20 attending on a good day.) In class lectures are very boring because he reads off the textbook the entire time. Skipped almost every class and got a high A. Take the online tests pass.
Fantastic professor if you are interested in music, he is very passionate and funny and knows what he is talking about.
SOOO easy. Showed up to the first day and didn't show up again. Your grade is based on a few tests online that are open book and can take a while (depends on your situation) but you have 24 hours to complete them so it's not bad at all. I don't feel like I learned anything from his class though.
Best generals credit I have ever taken
Everyone kept telling me to take this class (art elective) and Im glad I did. All lectures are him just talking but he threw in jokes and music examples as much as he could. Attendance isnt mandatory. Your whole grade depends on exams, and even though they were super long, its take home & the answers are online. PS. Dont buy the textbook
Did not show up to the class once and still received an A, he doesnt care or take attendance. There are 5 tests 100 points each with unlimited time to do them, all online too.... Did not even buy a textbook, didn't need one. Most test answers are online, your entire grade is those tests, nothing else. Best fine arts class credit... pretty easy A.
Took the History of Rock and Roll for my Gen Ed. FF credit. He is very passionate which is nice to see. Stopped going after the first two weeks. There's 5 tests in total with 100 questions each. But its all open note. The test answers are all on the internet somewhere or in his textbook. So worth it and so easy to get that credit
In order to pass the class, you basically have to cheat using online quizlets. The professor or others also seem to go to course hero and chegg and give deliberately false answers.
Online History of Rock n' Roll was a very easy class. There are 5 quizzes you need to take and all of the answers can be found in the textbook. Professor Costa's textbook is one he wrote and is comprised of shorthand notes that are fairly easy to follow. Lectures could be attended via zoom or watched as a recorded video. Attendance was not required
Definitely an easy A class as long as you complete the online test within the given time period. Professor Costa is hilarious, knowledgeable, and passionate about what he does. Not the best at responding to student emails however.
