Awesome lab instructor. Prof Raman legitimately cares about her students. She takes time to explain the procedure and clarify any discrepancies in the lab manual. Always willing to help during and outside of office hours. Highly recommend her.
She goes too fast in her lecture so you are unable to get down the notes, and she does not provide her notes online, so pretty much you have to just learn everything on your own from the book. This in turn makes the class as a whole more difficult. Avoid if possible
Awful teacher. Basically reads notes straight out of the textbook during her boring lectures which are not on moodle and she hardly goes over any example problems in class. In other words, you pay about 1000 dollars to take her class so you can teach YOURSELF out of the textbook. The homework is hard. Avoid her if possible.
Fair, focuses on concepts and responsive to students. Slides are from the book and I just marked the parts covered in class. I didn't worry copying notes and focused on actually learning the material. Very good prep for the MCAT. Problems on tests were in homework or covered in class. Lectures are broken up with videos to support the concepts.
She doesn't post notes online, yet goes too fast to allow us to copy them down. It seems she is more interested in having a difficult class than one in which students can learn. She often dismisses actually teaching concepts by saying to read the textbook. I would avoid her if at all possible.. her class is a waste of your tuition money. Good luck!
Really nice lady, just not a great teacher. The grading wasn't bad b/c online homework and labs were pretty heavily weighted, but the tests were kinda hard and class was really boring. She answered a lot of stupid questions from 1 or 2 kids instead of helping everyone understand the harder concepts.
She really tries to help students to do well, its just a hard course so its hard to teach. After the first exam a lot of people did bad, but she let us write notes on how to improve her teacing and she really tried to do so
she acts like she is so smart and becomes condescending at times. she doesnt put up lectures and doesnt go on the book, so there is no way to study for the exams. shes really bad at explaining simple things, and most everyone needed to get a tutor
This class is more difficult than it needs to be. She does not post lecture slides, goes way too fast to copy them down. Does not answer questions clearly. Tests are nothing like practice questions or homework.
She was a good lecturer and if you try in the class you should do well.
She goes way too quickly without emphasizing important concepts. She'd do sample questions in like 1 minute without explaining it and would move on to the next one. With that being said, she cares about her students and wants them to do well. She seems nice and put BIG BIG curves on the test. Take her if you can. She now posts her notes online btw.
She is the best physics professor ever. Loved her way of explaining the concepts. Do and understand ur homework and you will do great in her class. Enjoyed her class so much :)
She was a good professor, but she goes to fast in her lectures. Homework can be hard but she gives you enough time to do it. Her notes are now posted online but they didn't help much. Go to SI it is a lot of help.
Physics is the worst nightmare for me. I was praying to pass this course. I took it over the summer and I really enjoyed the way she taught it. It is overall a hard course and a lot of things to learn especially within 6 weeks. But overall an ok professor. If you put the efforts and do the homowork, you will do fine
Great professor. Made class interesting. Very nice, and fair with grading. Also very accommodating when I became very ill at the end of the semester. Take her class!
Physics is the absolute nightmare for me, but this professor made it bearable! I really enjoyed her teaching style! Very clear and makes sure to explain the concept in a way that you actually understand!
First exam was a little hard and low avg but she gave us extra credit for explaining what we did wrong and how to do each question correctly. The rest of the tests were easier and she curves. Also uses webassign which sucks but its free points. Overall seemed fairly easy to get an A. Recommended.
Not a difficult class if you put in the work and take your time on the homework (webassign). Overall an interesting class that I enjoyed.
I had Prof. Raman for PHY 161 during the fall 2014 semester. Besides the fact that the class is taught traditional lecture style with a powerpoint, I have no complaints. Personally, I like to see physics examples especially with physics, but I still had no issue learning from her teaching.
Professor Raman is very nice and helpful. She has online homework, classwork homework and 4 exams(3-4 free-response questions). I took this course in the summer. Also, this website "planethollowayphysics" is very helpful for the exams. She gets most of her questions from this website. In order to get 4.0, practice all the problems from class/online
Please don't take her. I'm really good at math and always got good grades, besides for this class. All semesters I struggled to even pass. Her exams are mult choice and a few free response but extremely difficult. She does not explain anything during her notes, she just puts up a power point and gives you a million equations! Webassign also sucks
Her explanations for labs are often quick and confusing. She sometimes leaves the room for 15 minutes at a time, so if you're stuck on something and need her, there's nothing you can do. She's condescending and half the instructions needed to do the lab reports correctly are not in the manual or in her presentations.
Professor Raman is a great professor! She thoroughly explains the material, if you have any questions at all she makes sure to address them. She is very reachable outside of the classroom, if you need extra help she is more than willing. Physics is a tough course so it is up to you to also put in work. Also, she is more than fair with her grading.
Professor Raman is fabulous! She explains everything with relative ease, and if something is confusing, she answers questions in a helpful manner. I personally like her style of teaching with Powerpoint because it puts the information you need in simple terms. Lots of example problems and classwork which are extremely helpful!
Professor Raman is an excellent instructor. She clearly explains concepts so it is very easy to grasp and develop a clear understanding of physics. Raman is also very consistent with solving problems in class and helping students who are struggling. If you not only want to succeed, but truly understand physics. Take her classes!!
Although Physics is a difficult subject, Raman manages to make the class both comprehensible and interesting. She wants her students to succeed and is there to give extra help when needed. She has a legitimate passion for the subject, which makes the class far more interesting. Overall she is an excellent professor who I would highly recommend.
Very fair with grading. Homework is worth a good amount and curves when needed. Would not have passed without her.
Her lectures are boring and she reads directly from power point slides. Doesn't use the white/chalkboard for problem solving. She assigns in class work on Fridays which resemble simple worksheets reminiscent of highschool physics. I sent two e-mails during the semester and didn't receive a reply. I would not recommend this instructor.
Took this class for the Summer 2 semester and learned so much in those 8 weeks. Dr. Raman was a great teacher and she made sure her students understand the material. Grading and Exams are very fair. If you go to lecture and do the homework and study, then you should get an A. She curves if needed, which is very nice.
Dr. Raman is a great professor and an even better person. She's VERY knowledgable of the material and is incredibly approachable and understanding. She is passionate about her students actually understanding the material, and her exams are very fair. On top of that, the exams usually have a hefty curve. Highly recommend!
I was nervous about physics 2, but Dr. Raman made it doable. She gives exercises in class so her students can understand the subject and be prepared for the short answer questions. She is approachable in lab and class. Pay attention to what she focuses on in class and do as many practice questions as you can get your hands on and you will get an A.

I'm not sure how she has such a good rating, she's a nice person but terrible teacher... If you enjoy teaching yourself physics, I highly recommend her. She blows off class flipping thru PP slides telling YOU what YOU'LL read about. The class averages a solid D on most of her exams. If you value your GPA and actually want a teacher, skip her.
She didn't teach us anything. She read off of her power point slides and her exams were WAY harder than the very few examples she gave in class. She shows up late for almost every class, and cuts the lecture time in half. Be prepared to teach yourself; you won't learn anything from her.
Dr. Raman is a gem of a physics teacher. Note: Azzume Assume
Pros: homework counts for 35% of your grade and classwork for an additional 5%, very reasonable compared to other physics professors at this university, lots of free points on exam free response, curves on tests to about 70% Cons: homework is very very time consuming, tests can be challenging (harder than lecture but easier than hw) Understand hw!!
I love Dr. Raman! She was my lab professor for Physics 1 and 2. She explains things in great detail and help students as much as possible.
Dr. Raman is awesome! I had her for lab for physics 1010 and 1020. She is very helpful and clarifies explanations when necessary. If you have a question about anything, she is always willing to answer. Great in lab and lecture!
If you have the option to take Professor Raman, TAKE HER! I am so glad I took that route. She is really fair and wants her students to succeed. 10/10. Obviously the material covered is quite difficult because it is a Physics class, so don't let that mislead you on how good of a teacher she is.
Very well prepared teacher and very helpful! Dr. Raman's lectures are informative and never boring. She always asks questions in class and welcomes them from her students. Bonus advice: take her during the winter semester and you will get to see her wearing her colorful scarves! Pretty fascinating.
Try as I might, I was unable to crack an A in Professor Raman's class. She may be a great professor in other ways but her tests are downright difficult. She often lets class out early. She does give extra credit towards the end and curves the class out but this class was the sole cause of my stress all semester. I may just not be a physics person.
Dr. Raman was great! She explained things well in class and was willing to go over things again until students understood it. She also was willing to meet outside of class for extra help if needed. If you understood what she went over in class, you were prepared for tests. She cared about the students and their understanding. Would take her again!!
She's terrible, take anyone but her
Take Physics elsewhere you will not learn to Critically think in her class! Short lectures that lack substance. Tons of homework that takes hours to complete and is extremely frustrating because she doesn't give examples in lecture. She expects you to learn from SI rather than her, you are just given equations with no explanation on how to use them
Lectured but not in the sense that you think. She had some lectures that were 20 minutes and went over key formulas for the exam. Homework took hours every week to complete. Exams were difficult, but followed the homework. Be prepared to teach yourself physics from the book or from SI or tutoring session. Worked by butt off for my grade.
I had her for Physics I and II and I can just say, to me it's an easy A. Online Physics Exam in her class are open book but I would only recommend having the equations in hand. I would print out the webassign (for homework and exams ) and having the work done to each because the exam is just like the homework (but different numbers).
Physics is only a little better than math at this University. The teachers are all foreign and it's hard to understand and way over priced. She, as well as others, waste time in lecture teaching you elementary physics concepts and it'll be much more difficult on the tests. Just skip lecture and read the book and you will be much much more prepared.
Lecture videos don't focus on equations at all - long, rambling, difficult to understand - more about the history, be prepared to really read your text and watch videos via YouTube/using online resources. Lots of hw, some of which will take hours to complete. Overall, try and find a different prof with a higher rating.
I really disagree with some of the negative comments about this professor. Physics is not my strong suit and I didn't really have a background in it, but her lectures are seriously awesome. Talks quick so make sure you read through the PPTs beforehand. She basically hints at exactly what' on the exam and curves them. Genuinely caring prof-LOVE her.
I had her for Physics 1 and it was a very easy class. Exams were just like the homework and if you showed up for the lectures, you didn't really have to read the book. Homework could be lengthy at some moments but you had multiple attempts to get the right answer, so it was an easy A. Would definitely recommend her for those new to physics!
The class was set up nice. Go to lecture and do the homework. There's only one homework assignment per week with one activity (free response). The exams were pretty difficult, but they were graded very fairly! She really encourages student success, I'd recommend!!
Dr. Raman was amazing! Probably the best physics professor at OU. Exams are very similar to homework and class problems. Easy to get an A if you did well on the homework. She is very good at answering questions in class. Overall very nice and a great professor- one of my top 5 throughout my 4 years at OU.
Professor Raman's lectures were straightforward and concise. You will have to do lots of work on your own outside of class to fully understand the concepts as she doesn't do many in-class examples. Her tests are difficult but she offers a few EC questions on each exam. She is also extremely accommodating to students with disabilities. I recommend!
The class itself wasnt hard if you spent time studying. The professor didnt answer any of my emails throughout the semester unless it was COVID related. Ended class early a lot of the time but skips over multiple slides. She gives a lot of questions in her PowerPoints but never goes over the answers to them to help. The TA is more help.
I wouldn't recommend taking a class with her. lectures were just reading off PowerPoint and you had to teach yourself. teaching is unclear since she uses different methods than the book. exams are extremely hard, the wording is confusing . if you have a chance to take this class with a different professor, do your mental health a favor and do that.
This Professor is amazing if you don't pay attention you are obviously going to do bad so you will have to pay attention in order to get a good grade, the students that wrote bad reviews are the ones who did not study at all or attend lectures she makes physics amazing!
She is the best professor for physics at OU.
I love this professor. Her exams are SO hard, but she curves if the class average is below a 75%. Physics is hard in general. Lots of webassign homework, on top of other HW. You have to go to class to learn how to do the problems efficiently - it's hard to learn off her powerpoints alone. But she is great at teaching, and is always willing to help.
LOVE THIS PROFESSOR! SHE IS THE BEST
Pros: Good/informative lectures Activities only took about 1-2 hours per week and online hw only to 1-3 hours per week but were good practice for exams Always available after class to ask questions Good amount of extra credit Exams are pretty fair in difficulty Cons: Does not post lecture recordings or handwritten examples
Pushed back exams one day when asked. Allowed a cheat sheet for exams, curves exams if av. under a D (I think). Exams are 75% multiple-choice, and a few free responses. Says that exams teach time management, so watch the clock. Clicks through slideshow then does examples in class. I'd recommend going to SI or read the chapter before lecture.
Raman can spend a bit of time focusing on PowerPoint slides, but the in-class example problems are thorough & what you really need to know how to do. The lectures are not recorded & the homework can be lengthy and difficult. If you can do & understand the homework, you're set for the exam. Overall good explanations. Study for exam 1, most do bad.
Go to lecture because she forgets about Zoom hybrid often. Ask a lot of questions because material is fast. Slides are not very helpful but her in class problems are good examples. WebAssign is NOT like the exam and often very lengthy. Just try to get as many points as you can for the HW and then study notes and problems. Best choice out of others.
Raman is a very fair professor and defiantly the best choice for physics. Her exams are very fair and quizzes are easy. Webassign homework is time consuming, but easy points. She made her final before finals week and was non-cumulative, with an easy 5% cumulative online quiz the same week. She curves exams if the class average is under a 75%.
Professor Raman is the best option for taking this class, she gives you a pretty good opportunity to pass this class as long as you do your work. One thing is that her lectures are very fast paced and are barely about her power points, she just sticks to one power point and writes a lot of notes which is difficult keeping up with her.
At times Raman can be a good professor, however, Raman is very fast paced and often does not care if students do not understand, she continuously says she must move on. She has questions on her exams that were never taught in class. She does not give enough practice on the content and during exam week she still has homework and activities due.
Raman had decent lectures, but slides were from the textbook company and not hers. She offered no outside help or assistance, especially on tough topics and during exam week. Students asked for practice problems prior to exams and she said she doesnt have time. Lectures were rushed and she expected students to already know content prior to teaching
It was a roughly two hour class, but she would sometimes end class early or give us a short break. The first exam is the hardest, then the difficulty drops off. You'll have a minimum of two homework assignments due per week, one a written assignment, and the other on Webassign. Textbook is not required, but Webassign is.
The class overall is not that difficult as long as you put the time into the class. Most of her exams are from the lecture notes and webassign so I strongly urged to look at those. The only concern in this class is that she is very fast on her lectures so I strongly recommend you to review the lectures beforehand.
Average professor, not super hard, but not easy. You can probably find a better prof out there.
Very kind, understanding, and willing to help. Typically curves first exam, then no curve on second and third exam due to averages being higher. Lectures are important for knowing what sections to skip and asking questions. Exam questions are similar to WebAssign difficulty, but multiple choice is often harder than free response. Easy high grade!
Professor Raman's teaching style feels like she expects her students should know the subject matter as well as she does. She blows through premade PowerPoint slides provided by the book publisher. She only provides a few meaningful examples to be worked through in class. This often leaves a lot of material left for you to figure out on your own.
If you have to take a Physics course at Oakland, Professor Raman is your BEST option. The homework/exams weren't easy, but manageable. She curves exam averages up to 70-75%. I didn't realize how good I had it with her as a Professor until I took PHY 1020 with someone else, as who I have now is comfortable with 53% exam averages with minimal curves
Good professor with clear lectures and gives good example problems during class. Homework is straightforward and exams are fair. She will listen to her students and accommodate when reasonable.
Professor is just OK. Needs to provide more examples. Exam 2 class average was 50%. This shows that she does not teach the material well. She only covers slides, with 1 or 2 worked through examples in class.
Flies through powerpoints (Usually around 80 slides per 1 hour lecture) which give little to no insight into the actual questions that will need to be solved, does examples in class but does not fully explain the concept before, and gives very little to prepare for exams. Although she gave lots of extra credit to make up for the 50% exam average
Overall good professor. Exams were not too difficult. Exams are only 45% of the grade which is awesome for a science class. She speeds through powerpoint's and isn't really accessible outside of class, but other than that she's pretty good.
Professor Raman is a bad lecturer and professor as she just clicks through powerpoint which are identical to the book and does not provide example problems.I stopped going to class after the first exam as it was a better use of my time to go to the TA (who was amazing!!). The only good thing is that tests are extremely easy and are usually curved.
It was a challenging course. Practice the problems from the textbook, it will help a lot for exams.
She moved an exam up 5 days early without letting us know until 2 days before the new date. Would not offer a makeup, so she gave an incomplete until you do it in the fall. She usually ends class early which may seem great, but she gives easy practice problems in class then expects us to be experts for the HW. Very hard to access outside of class.
Moved exam up by 5 days with minimal notice. Finishes one chapter in one hour. Calls really hard chapters easy.
Dr. Raman was awesome! She was very understanding that this was an introductory class and made several accommodations for her students. Physics is not my strong suit, but I did extremely well in this class. I would highly recommend her!
This class is not that hard, just follow along examples she does in class. However, she sometimes does not prepare us well enough with enough practice questions for the exam. Right down everything you may need for the exam on the cheat sheet. She curves the exam a lot if the class average is below 75% and exams have tons of bonus questions.
This professor was really good!! The exams are not bad at all, she curves the class if the average is under 70% and she is willing to give points back if you explain what you did wrong. She offers a lot of extra credit questions on exams so you have a lot of room to make a mistake. I would take her again.
If you take this professor you are pretty much on your own when it comes to learning the material because she doesn't not know how to teach. She never explains where she gets numbers from when doing class problems. Don't bother emailing her because she won't answer no matter how many times you try. Very odd teaching and professor overall.
I love Dr. Raman. I was actually entertained during lecture and she was pretty funny. Exams are less than half your grade, and she offers extra credit quizzes, and curves when the average is low. If you have a good math background and do the homework, you should do great.
Very good professor. Definitely take for PHY 1010.
If you have to take physics 1010, you'll pass this class, but if you want to feel CONFIDENT in the material, you may want to consider community college or a diff professor...She feels very distant and at times, has come off as annoyed at students and makes me feel like I'm in high school again. I never went to lecture and found that worked better.
The homework and the lecture never matched up. We could have an equation sheet, but it only helps if you know how to pick apart the problem, so it never really helped. She also would just give us an equation and a problem and then tell us to just do it.
DO NOT TAKE HER! Her lectures are just her reading a power point very quickly. Makes exams nothing like the homework and lectures. Grades homework like you have known the subject your entire life. Wont accept any excuses for missing the final even after giving evidence that I couldn't make it. DO NOT TAKE HER!
An ok professor overall. Not too much homework, an activity and a webassign (or 2) due a week. Reads off slides the whole time and shows some videos. Exams are hard to prepare for, but not too bad.
Reads off slideshow for whole class period with some examples for practice. Had different grading scale in syllabus than what was actually being used to grade assignments on Moodle, and acted like it wasn't an issue when questioned. Has a course grader, so getting grades back takes long. Answers questions, but seems annoyed when you ask. Don't rec.
Teaching wise, she isnt good. In fact you can skip all the lectures and just do the hw and youll be good. 3 exams about 15% of ur grade each so there is a lot of ways to make ur other points which is nice.
Can't teach to save her life. EC quizzes before exams (3%). she teaches like we should already have known everything. does not define ANYTHING. It's her coming up with problems in her head and drawing on a paper. i know it's a hard class but AVOID especially if you have no background of physics. She skips through half her powerpoint slides too.
Avoid this professor if possible, she doesn't answer questions clearly, teaches like we should already know the material, and doesn't bring a calculator to class. If you do have to take the class with her make sure you read the chapter BEFORE the class, and bring headphones or earbuds as she is very loud and shouts into her microphone.
She doesn't seem like a bad person, but her class makes me feel like I'm in high school again. It's difficult to follow the examples that she shows up on the board because she expects us to already know how to solve the problems. She asks the class a lot of questions and seems annoyed when we don't know the answer. Mildly stressful.
She seems like a genuinely sweet person but her teaching is awful. She skims over content as though the whole class already has a degree in physics, then jumps straight into example problems. In the example problems she zooms through them and her hand writing is difficult to read. DON'T recommend if you struggle with physics!
She's a very nice professor but I always felt lost in her lectures, so after each class I ended up going to the TA. Professor Raman is definitely a good choice if you are planning to take Physics 1010, but just be ready to practice a lot if it is your first time learning physics. I ended up having to.
I loved Raman. Cengage homework is more difficult than exam content, so if you can understand homework content then you will be fine. Non-cumulative final and final exam is the week before finals week which are both a major plus! Attendance isn't mandatory but you need to be in class to succeed as the lecture slides are not informative enough.
During lectures, she would give you like 20 equations, then show an example on the screen and you are expected to know what equation to use and how to solve it. Barely explained work. Forgot to teach us something the class before the test and did it in 5 minutes and said it was still going to be on the test. I taught myself everything.
Dr.Raman is a great professor. She does give lots of practice problems and does a whole exam review the day before the exam. Exams are curved up to 70% and she gives a 3% EC quiz VIA the TA. Don't listen to some of these reviews if you practice the content, you will be just fine for this class.
Raman is a nice professor, but I had to teach myself a lot of the content in order to get an A. Her lectures didn't help me retain much information but the practice problems gave me a good idea of what questions could be on the exam. I liked the amount of homework + extra credit opportunities.
