She might start as seeming mean and hard, but give her a chance. After the drop date she kicks in her help session like 3 times a week. She tries her best to help her students out and very reasonable. After she gets warm up to the class, she is very nice and sometimes funny.
she is a very sweet little lady, will do her best to help you out. Drops 1 test and quiz grade. should take her, seems mean at first, but is really nice
shes a good teacher. very determined, but often late.
She's seems to know what she's doing, but during summer school I don't think she gave it her all. I felt short changed after she stopped posting practice problems and grades on WEBCT, but she did go on to give extra credit at the end of the class.
She was a great professor. Definetly would recommend. Really knew the subject material. She did everything in her power to help the student's grade and helped alot by adding tons of bonus points. Take her do what she says, get the A!
She was a great professor. Definetly would recommend because she Really knew the subject material. She did everything to help the student's grade and helped alot by adding tons of bonus points.Just dont talk in her class and u will be fine. a definet A
Need to be more aggressive in making the class hush. SHe makes sure you understand but gets offended if she has to do too much explain. She feels you should have learned a lot in high school. I liked her though. An A is definitely possible.
Great teacher. She has an accent, but understandable. READ and UNDERSTAND the textbook. Tests are fairly easy, and she curves it too.
I had her for lab and she was great! Once she realizes you are struggling she is always on your case to make sure you are doing it right which is a good thing in lab! She also gave me extra points at the end of the lab on my notebook! Take her she is probably the best teacher too have in lab!
she is not a good professor, she gets fustrated easily, making you not want to ask her questions. she has an attitude.
a very good and helpfull teacher.....i likes her. took her for chem 1211 1212 and 1212 lab.she helped me a lot.she might be very strict in class but she is helpful. ask her question she loves answering. made a A+ in both classes and lab too
great pofessor, just pay attention in class and do some practice problems. You'll definately get a B if not a A.
She is not a good teacher. She wastes time on stupid, trivial things and leaves out important details. Tests are hard and not curved. Same goes for quizzes. Any time you ask her a question, all she does is tell you to come to tutoring. she has a major attitude problem and is very UNHELPFUL!
Very clear. If you ask her a question she will answer it or will make an effort to make time for you. Spends maybe too much time on simple concepts but that is more the student fault.
Her tests contain some materials that she doesn't cover in class. The stuff that she misses, you'd have to catch in the textbook. You have to buy and read the book... along with the notes she posts.
Knows her stuff. But dont get it twisted, your Chem book WILL be your Bible for the semester. Office hours are very welcoming. It was hard, but clarity in teaching made me sign up for her again next semester.
I loved chemistry but she has ruined it for me. Forget asking het a question because she has a MAJOR attitude problem.
She is an excellent professor. Her tests and quizzes are easy if you study her notes and do some practice problems. An A is definitely possible.
READ THE BOOK. if u go to calss and read the book your chances of passing the class are extremely high. chem does not come easy for me but between the book and her notes you can pass easily. going to class is mainly mandatory on days she cover math concepts anything else can be learned from the book.
Decent enough, however she's tends to slow up the class by repeating everything. And she doesn't like people asking questions. Her quizzes and tests aren't that hard, but she moves so slow that you have to rush at the end of the semester. Easy to skip class and keep up though.
I took her for chem 1211 and 1212 and hated it. It's either some people love her or dont. Shes the reason i had to change my major because she made chemistry dreadful for me. Do yourself a huge favor and take Barrow.
Prof Thota is one of the worst professors I've ever had!! I was a chem major and she's the reason I switched. She gets a kick out of being mean to students and seeing them fail. On top of that, she teaches you NOTHING!! The class is extremely slow and boring. I felt completely unprepared for the final. No need to say I didn't take her for 1212.
Save yourself... Thota will post hw the day before it is due. She's not that helpful... I just didn't like the class because of her. I loved chem 1211 with navarro but not so much this class
Thota is a great teacher. Chemistry is a tough subject. This class requires a TON of preparation-- READ THE BOOK, then pay attention in class and you should pull out with atleast a B. If you're a Chem major and don't do well in her class, consider changing your major as future classes are just going to get harder...
Thota is probably the worst teacher at GSU... she make too many mistake on her test, you cannot reason with her... and over that she have a big attitude in class...avoid her class if you can
ATTITUDE! She has this resentful tone when talking to her students, as if to say, "i'd rather be teaching organic chemistry". Not a reasonable teacher, but if you have good study habits, then an A is def. possible!
this women enjoys failing people, she completely messed up my GPA and i would not encourage anyone to take her class. she makes people majoring in the science field rethink their major, she is not very helpful, that's the cleaned up version of what i really want to say about her.( she also has a big attitude problem)
She is a good teacher and she helps you study for the ACS exam. Her quizes are easy if you pay attention in class, but you have to read the book and her notes for the test. She has greats tudy guides and her office hours are useful.
This is the worse professor I have ever encountered in my three years in college. I have a 3.7 GPA and this lasy is so apathetic in her teaching style that it is pathetic. I would not recommend ever taking her-EVER!!!! And watch out for her supplemental teaching assistant-what a nightmare!! She does not care at all.. BIG ATTITUDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great teacher! she stimulated my interest in chemistry -Its a tough class, but she is very patient-has flexible office hours to accomodate all my questions! Thanks!
She tries to teach during class, but most of the time she is busy telling ppl to be quiet or making fun of them. We do a practice problem and half way through it she'll just get sidetracked or abandon the problem. Out of class, she is helpful though.
Not the best but she is the best at gsu
She is a great teacher!!If you have any problems with the class just go to her office hours, she will make sure when you leave you understand everything clearly. She also spends alot of time doing practice problems to make sure you have something to base the rest of your probs on.
I did really well, however I pretty much knew the material from AP and ALOT of studying. Unless you already are sure you know the material then RUN AWAY as fast as possible. If you are like I was then its ok, she will even stroke your ego and try to make you feel like you're better than everyone else. She is a very snobby narcissist.
What to say? She is okay but I really struggled she makes it alot harder than it is. Her quizes will be over four chapters yet will have only two or three questions. I would not take her class along with another science.
Chemistry has never really sparked my interest but if anything made me hate the subject, it was Thota. Her attitude problem and distaste for "interruptions" (um, there called QUESTIONS!??!) made the class ridiculously frustrating. Tests, only 3, were manageable, but studying is necessary! [Niced-out version.]
The person above me is completely wrong their are better but she is a TERRIBLE teacher. I would rather take chemistry with my dog teaching so I can understand and learn more than with her again.
class is very difficult and confusing but in hine sight the test are fairly easy. MUST attend class. was suprised with my grade but in a good way. reccommended
She does things in a confusing way but she is willing to help those who ask for help. She tries to make the class as easy a possible.
She's honestly the best teacher at state. She's helpful and flexible with her office hours. As long as you put an effort into the class, you'll certainly succeed.
hardest teacher ever, don't take her take barrow instead. she is mean and doesn't teach or give good examples on any of the material. take barrow!!!!!!!!!!!
class is hard as hell and this teacher does nothing to make it any easier. she doesn't know how to teach the material to the students and always rushes to get through the material. she is not lenient at all with anyone, other chem teachers atleast give extra credit to help a little but she doesnt. couldve made an A but got a B, barely. get out
She's a horrible teacher and if you like her, it's because she likes you because you go to her office hours and suck up. She has got the biggest attitude problem and flips out every 5 minutes about people "talking" when no one is saying a word instead of teaching. She laughs when she posts trick questions and people miss them. Take anyone but her.
One of the worst teachers I've had. If it were not for SI I'm not sure I would have learned anything. There was wrong information given. She was too busy yelling at people for talking, spent way too much time playing with new clickers that were useless. I studied and did well but it was tough. If you already feel confident about Chem you should be ok
Really enjoyed her class during the summer, great teacher. She provides powerpoints for all her lectures that are very helpful. If you go to class and take thorough notes and review them, it will help you out tremendously. She is very eager to help outside of class even though most students don't take advantage of it.
This instructor goes over her material too quickly and seems to be expectational of your knowledge, even though you actually don't know everything. I am having a very difficult time with keeping up with this class, she she does not explain the mathematical concepts with proper detail.
She is a good teacher. Makes content easy and tests are super easy. She is also very funny. You must study though.
The last rating is correct. She loves to mess with your head and sucks in lecture. Yelling about nothing and tells you how you are acting like a HS kid. Doesn't teach. SI saved most of us. Ego problem for sure, doesn't want to go over homework problems and gives review information that isn't on the test.
She is a very good teacher. She doesn't accept laziness from students and expects everyone to study, which she makes clear at the beginning of the course. She is very willing to help, and gives extra credit. Overall a great teacher if you are willing to put the effort in.
She play too much with people's head during lecture and likes to tell people to be quiet. I wouldn't recommend her because she doesn't seems very serious minded about chemistry to be serious in class. Bad teacher if you don't have a good work ethic. If you planned to pursue a career in science don't take her!
She is very nit picky. Keeps telling people to be quiet. Doesn't put lecture notes up until after lecture. Takes a while grading. Tests don't seems hard until you get your grade back. There are a lot of tricky answers which are meant to confuse you. Take her if you have no other option but be prepared to work in this class. Good Luck!
very helpful teacher. I did not care much for chemistry before this class, she did get me interested! My final grade was more than my expectations :) she teaches a bigger class, kids talk then and there so i think she has to shush them a little!
I regret not reading her ratings here before taking her. She is not a very good teacher. She contradicts herself A LOT during lectures. She got worse with teaching as the semester progrssed. She wasn't there for any of the tests, not even the final and her grading was horrible. Use the book. I did much better studying from the book. Good Luck!
People who give her a bad rating must have never went to her office hours or tutoring. She teaches everything in a simple way so that EVERYONE will understand it. My exam grades were A, B, F, B and I still made an A in the class . Do lots of practice problems from the book and you'll be fine. Lab is easy, it'll help boost your grade.
She was so easy. She gave out so many extra points on the tests because everyone kept complaining. I made an A+. Thanks for all of you who complained!
She is a cool prof! I never felt she has any strong accent, just differnt. students not getting simple math or who forgot basics usually slow down the class. Nobody said chemistry is easy, so quit complaining and try a little harder!
she made this rule on day 1 about computer usage...if we used 1 then we'd either hav to sit in the front on in the bak. so i sat in the back talking to my friends on fb all semester...i ended up with an A in the class...if you review her powerpoints(last min) u'll do fine
I LOVE DR. THOTA! She is extremely helpful and is always available for office hours. Study hard & do practice problems from the book & you'll do pretty good on the exams. She may seem strict but she has a sense of humor. If you show her you're willing to learn & that you're trying, she will curve and you'll come out with a good grade. I recommend!
Sigh, what to say about Thota. The class was a bit difficult for me. She is very stern on test questions, & does not give any curves or points back. She can be humorous, but sometimes it comes off as sarcastic. The tests and quizzes were tricky. A bit irrelevant to her lectures. I do not really recommend her :/
What a joke class. She was gone for most of the semester, so other teachers were teaching us, but it was still a breeze. However, no curves. Plus this semester's TA, garfield beckford, what an ass. otherwise, she's smart and can be funny. not a bad teacher, I'd say.
Dr. Thota really wants to teach students who want to learn. The class is pretty easy, but it'll be insanely difficult if you put little to no effort in. As long as you listen somewhat, do mastering chem, and study a tiny bit for tests you'll be straight. And if you're struggling, Thota will get you back on track.
To the person that commented 2 below this post, failed to mention that Dr.Thota was gone because she had a baby this past semester. Dr. Thota is a wonderful prof that knows her stuff well. Her class is fair, as long as you do your work and study- you will be fine. Our TA Garfield was the best, he tried his hardest to help us as much as he could!
I don't recommend her. After being absent for months, she came back and gave us a test to take the next day! She wasted too much time on easy stuff and then schemed thru the last 4 hard chapters. And within a week, Boom! we had to take our final. No matter what, she wont push test dates. So, if u take her, you'll be teaching yourself for passing.
Wastes MOST time trying to get everyone to talk instead of working problems. Have to go by her office if you want 15 conduct pts granted end of semester. Tests are combination theory & simple problems. Prior semester quizes/tests are posted and are helpful test preparation. Her use of uLearn is not acceptable - 2 dift syllabi & missing grades.
GREAT TEACHER REALLY GOOD EXPLAINER however is a litle slow to update grades and keep up with the schedule, gives EC!!!!!
Good teacher, good at explaining things. However, she does waste time in class, so if you need extra help feel free to go to her during office hours. If you use your textbook, you should be find. I would recommend her, if you have a hard time with chemistry.
I got an A-. 5 quizzes, and 4 tests, 2 final exams (lower grade exempted = 2 chances). Thota is fair.. Pay attention and TAKE NOTES because these notes are similar to questions on the quiz and test.
Great teacher! good at explaining things. She was easily accessible- had lots of help sessions and extra office hours. More importantly she worked out a lot of sample problems/questions which clearly helped me in taking ACS final which has 1211 stuff also
This class is definitely a step up in difficulty from 1211k, so don't slack at all. 9 quizzes (dropped 1), 4 exams (dropped 1), ACS final exam. She is very helpful outside of class - but not very thorough in preparing us for the ACS. The final exam covered concepts from both chem 1 and 2. I would recommend her for students with a good grasp of chem
Great prof. I had her for 1211/1212 and did very well, but had to WORK for my grades. That means lots of practice problems, SI, office hrs. She wants all her students to do well; however, she will not spoon feed you. Tests/quizzes are very fair. No real surprises if you use her resources. If working hard bothers you, this is not the course for you.
She is a horrible professor. Her tests have vague question, and she does not really teach well.DONT RECOMMEND HER AT ALL.DONT TAKE HER!!!HORRIBLE PROFESSOR!!SHE WASTES TIME!
What a horrible professor. She speaks to you as if you've known the subject all your life. Very vague when telling you what to study. Please do yourself a favor and do not take her and save your GPA. I wish someone told me that. I thought I could tough it out but it did not work, TRUST ME. Stay away.
She was very good. She allows you to drop your lowest quiz and test grade and her previous quizzes show you exactly what to expect. I took her for both 1211 & 1212 and i made B's on most of her test and did decent on the quizzes and still came out with an A. Just go to class and read textbook and it will be a breeze.
Class was easy. Tests were based on her lectures and powerpoint. I did not read the book much and i got an A. She curves a lot. However, she made mistakes sometime on the tests and TA on the quizzies. But she add back the points at the end of the semester. Highly recommended easy class.
Thota's TA can teach better than her.
Overall I thought she was a great professor. She does drop the lowest quiz and test grade. She demonstrates alot of examples in class and will help you if you go to her office hours. I did have to read the book to better understand some things, but she is also fair if she messes up on grading or something she gives points towards final grade.
It is a science that requires your attention. She works with the students because she loves her job. Material is difficult, but she teaches what she quizzes and tests on. Gives you study guides and works in office hours if you need more clarity. Recommend her,I learned a lot and made me like chemistry, eww haha.Textbook reinforces!
She is not easy don't expect any curves. But she does explain things pretty well and she will acknowledge your effort. But you really have to work for you grade.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER!!!!!
Thota is amazing. It is not an easy class, but if you are willing to put some work into it, you can get so much out of it. Thota is great at explaining and help is always there if you need it.
I recommend taking Dr. Thota, who is really helpful and knows her Chemistry. She has a tendency to get people to talk in class. She works a lot of practice problems in class. At the beginning she would slow down until everyone gets it but she rushed a bit at the end. She's very helpful during her office hours. It is not an easy class.
Very Good Professor!! She will prepare you for the final like no other! Her tests problems look like the final problems so you are familiar with the ACS Standardized final before you take it.
Awesome professor!! She is one of the best chem professors at gsu, she teaches really really well and she definitely knows her material. Its not an easy class, you just gotta work a little hard.
Very intelligent and strives for you to do the best!
Down to earth, sweet lady. She is a really good professor, and GSU is working her hard. I recommend taking her course.
Dr. Thota is a great professor. Freshman take 1211k. Most freshman are in-over-their head freshman trying to become doctors. Chemistry is easy at Georgia State, but it isn't an easy subject. Take Dr. Thota, it will build you. She isn't "easy," but she'll give you want you need. REALLY cares about students. Awesome lady. Loved Thota
Thota is good to those who help themselves. If she sees you put effort she will help beyond what you could ask for, if not she doesn't give two cents about you or your grade. Good Teacher, absolutely no tolerance for slackers.
Thota was very helpful in my class. She was my first chemistry I took in college! READ HER PRACTICE EXAMS they are helpful on test.. I didn't make below an 80 on her test but that is because I studied. She will tell you She isn't easy but if you do what she tells you you will make a good grade in her class!
She was a very sassy professor. She teaches well but don't be intimidated by her. She loves questions. Her reviews help a lot.
Would not recc taking this prof, but at GSU doesnt seem like there's a choice
Dr Thota is a great chemistry professor, probably the best at GSU. She is very helpful, especially if she knows you are putting in your best effort. She gives practice tests, there are quite a few quizzes. One of my favorite chem professors.
Four test, last one cumulative and you have to read the book forehand to understand her and her test are tricky. But overall she goes slow and helps you if you ask for help. It's very boring in the class but material overall is easy if you READ the book!
She's feisty. I kind of liked it. But towards the end of the semester, it got really annoying. She goes on a pretty normal pace. The material is pretty manageable. Study the notes thoroughly and you'll be good. She comes into class looking like she hates the world. She also use the phrase, "I've been in this business long enough to know that ..."
I would recommend taking her 1211 class. If you read the book, go to class, and do the practice exams you should be able to do well. I think she is an excellent professor, and I also enjoyed her personality. The only negative is that we had to really rush at the end of the semester.
Chemistry isn't easy but she makes it easy to understand. Study past semesters exams and quizzes that she puts on desire2learn and go to class and you'll pass. Also go to SI sessions if you do not want to read the book. At the end of the semester we sort of crammed everything. She drops one quiz and one exam. Her homework is pretty easy.
She is a fun teacher but only has 3 test and 3 quiz and online hw... So studying is super important, some extra credit was given bt not much.
My favorite professor! She connects subjects to real life events in order to make understanding much more simple. Also, if she sees struggle in the class, she awards extra credit. I could not imagine having anyone else for Chemistry. I strongly recommend taking her class to anyone whether you've taken a high level chemistry or not.
She is funny and kind. However, she seems to be a bit unorganized and decided to leave before the semester was over, at a time when students need help the most. That was disappointing, but perhaps it was for a good reason. If chemistry doesn't come naturally to you, you definitely have to study really hard in this class, and get extra help.
She's interesting & explains stuff relatively well. The class is not difficult if you come to her lectures. Everything is pretty straight forward. Get the notes if you're absent because her exams/quizzes are from lecture. A lot of material & some memorization required but it's doable. Does give extra credit. I definitely recommend taking her.
Thota was a good teacher! her class was fairly interesting, but she can be kind of speedy and not very thorough. She cares a lot about chemistry, but if you don't then you may struggle to keep up.
Thota does a poor job at explaining the material. She speeds through the course so you have to struggle to keep up. She isn't a simple teacher so you really have to focus and it is difficult to get good grades in this course. I had heard good reviews about her in the past but did not see great teaching done by her. Do not take her.
Dr. Thota loves Chemistry and I believe she knows what she's doing HOWEVER, she does a poor job explaining concepts in class and she works through things at a rapid pace. She also jumps around quite a bit. She's nice & has a good sense of humor but students who do not appreciate Chemistry and need help actually LEARNING it should not take her.
Grades are calculated by points. Quizzes are short, tests are all multiple choice. Standardized final at end of semester. The lowest for an A- is an 87, so don't worry. However, she does jump from subject to subject. If SI sessions available GO TO THEM! Don't be afraid to ask her questions.
Dr. Thota is great at cutting out overwhelming information and getting straight to the point. I understood chemistry quickly and easily from taking this class. She deserves more credit. Those that complain are just taking out their lack of understanding of the subject on her, but she couldn't have made it any easier, and she gives out extra credit
I took Thota's lab and honestly the only reason I got through it were because of the TA's and the people in my class helping each other. Doesn't explain the lab as well as it should be.
DO NOT TAKE HER FOR THIS CLASS!! unless you know your chemistry had to teach myself the whole semester whatever she teaches in class is not relevant to the exams which are mostly equations. I would highly suggest you take someone else if your not great at chem she is a terrible teacher and doesnt care about any of her students!
Do not take her! if your not great at chem dont take her whatever she teaches in class is not relevant to the test there was no point in going to class had to teach everything to myself using the textbook I feel like I wasted my time energy and money.
Do not take her!!! I wasted my time in this class! Her tests/quizzes dont correlate with what she teacher. I had to teach myself everything!! If you want to actually do well, don't take her!!
She doesn't do powerpoints, so going to class is pretty much required. To do well, you have do a lot of book problems and do her practice exams like crazy. She also gives some extra credit.
If you don't go to class, you're going to fail. If you don't care to learn, you're going to fail. I'm a 4.0 student and got a B in this class. It's tough. Final is absolutely ridiculous; 50 minutes for 60 questions. If this class isn't required for your major, don't take it. Especially with Thota.
Dr. Thota is a great chemistry teacher. She is good at explaining concepts. Chemistry is a hard class regardless of what teacher, you have to study hard. Dr. Thota's test were easy if you studied. She goes out of her way to help you with anything. She drops the lowest test. Quizzes she gave were not easy or hard. Overall, a great chemistry teacher.
JUST DON'T DO IT. Dr. Thota teaches this class as if all her students have ALREADY GOTTEN THEIR PHD. Without supplemental instruction I don't know how I would even grasped most of the major concepts we learned. The the final is 60 minutes / 60 questions and MUCH easier than any of the exams she gave.
The point of her class is for you to teach yourself how to do things. Im an auditory learner & I have been pretty good in chemistry for years. This class is tough. She puts videos online. Her videos like to skip up on her words sometimes & you have to figure out what she said. Quizzes are every class day & go with the videos. You have to buy book.
Treats you as if you already have your PhD. Online quizzes will probably destroy your GPA. I was told all I needed for this class was 1 year of HS Chem. That was not the case with Thota. The Case studies are also pointless and make no sense. You have to already be a Chem genius in order to get an A. Please do not take her if you have other options.
I actually really liked her teaching style. Very concerned that everyone understands the topics and how things work. I took her in summer and had a quiz every day in class, but if you were in class and paid attention it was easy. She posts lecture videos that are awesome for home use to review. Her tests were fairly difficult. Must attend to pass.
Thota was just.... not it. We would have an in class quiz (just about every class)on topics that she did not formally teach. Instead, we were supposed to learn chapters... from several 3-5 minute videos. Bad idea. Made no sense I'd fail quizzes, but get straight B's on test and I may make it out of the class with a C+.... whut? Don't take her!
She was nice and all but her class was actually challenging. If you take this class, expect an in-class quiz once a week. Her online quizzestest are the worst in my opinion. You REALLY have to study in this class or else you will fail. I made a B in there but still it was hard and you have to put in a lot of work. Go to SI sessions, it'll help.
Class is easy. Make sure you watch videos she post on youtube because you will have an in class quiz everyday. Online quizzes are easy. The test are multiple choice and not really hard if you go to SI and study. Really don't give enough time to take the exams. Thota is willing to help in her office hours. She gave a curve at the end of the semester
RUN. RUN VERY FAR AWAY from this class with Thota. She does not explain the material in detail. I had to teach myself using Google and YouTube videos. She is also VERY unorganized. Just don't do it. Please
I have enjoyed Dr. Thota's class! She is a great professor. She wants what every other professor wants,"For you to do the work and learn."Our entire class loves her. Chemistry is not the most easiest subject so therefore, she will explain & give several examples. Great sense of humor & she loves those who try. She gives extra credit & great advice
Very hard class and material but when she teaches it she makes you understand it, however there is a lot of self teaching to make sure you actually get it and can remember it for a test. You must use the book or watch her videos to get all the content for the tests.
She doesn't go into depth on concepts that are very hard. She did very well in the beginning of the semester teaching the basics of chemistry to help us get through everything but as the semester progressed on, she went less in depth and her tests became very hard. A lot of self-studying. If you can switch professors, do it. She's humorous though.
Very hard class with her but when she teaches it she makes you understand it, however there is a lot of self teaching to make sure you actually get it and can remember it for a test. She expect to know everything before quizes without teaching in the class. You must use the book or watch her videos to get all the content for the tests and quizes.
Thota is a nice lady but she is very lazy when it comes to class and her video lectures. She doesn't draw out the molecules or anything and wonders why we're always so confused.
NO! I'm telling you, don't take this class with Dr. Thota. She stops teaching a month before the class is over and makes us watch 36 five to ten minute videos so we can understand the material. Grades the worksheets and the quizzes without teaching. And puts things on the test that she never even talked about. If you take it RIP to your grade.
Delayed an exam the class before it was scheduled, blaming the overuse of the copy machine by other teachers who also had exams planned for that day. She was always unprepared, bringing a blank notebook to wing-it with poorly written notes she created in class. Tells personal stories 50% of the time, wasting class time. Would not recommend at all.
This class is hard and stressful. It does take up a lot of your time. Work hard and try to get above average on all the tests and you will be fine. Read textbook, Watch all her videos and memorize what she tells you. She might seem a little harsh, but she is very nice at the same time. I had her for both 1151 and 1152.
Dr. Thota is a funny teacher. 1151 is a hard class, concept wise. So be prepared to study and work hard. SI sessions really helped me. Thota gives her lectures on videos and quizzes you over each of them so you have to pay attention. Puts her old test up as practice so that's helpful. Test are easier than quizzes. You will have to work for an A.
Dr. Thota was an okay professor at best. She prepared online lectures that were difficult to follow. And a month before the final she took a vacation to India and didn't return until January. We had no help preparing for the final, only terrible online lectures.
I did better in 1152K than 1151K because I knew what to expect from her. She's really nice but I could not follow her online lectures and her teachings in class would be rushed sometimes. If you don't understand, go to the tutoring center at best. Best to practice this work as often as you can because it gets difficult.
Dr. Thota is the best professor at GSU. She is very helpful and kind. Do not fall in to this poor reviews because many student just don't one to do their work. I failed first semester and I explained my situation to her. She helped me to understand the importance of hard working and perusing your dreams. Came back next semester and got "B"
This class was really hard and a big awakening from high school. The final is so much easier than her tests, and her tests are easier than quizzes. She genuinely cares if her students learn. Don't be afraid to ask her questions. She will help you if she sees you putting in work. Go to lecture and you will be fine.
I had dr. thota for chem 1151 lab. I really struggled in the class. She was a very nice lady but not much help. She wouldn't post anything online for us to practice for midterm or final. I went to her office hours and didnt get help at all. I had to teach myself for all labs. Grades and papers were unorganized. Good luck.
I didn't struggle in the class because I took high school chemistry but if you watch her videos, take good notes, pay attention in class, ask questions, go to office hours, study from the textbook then you should be fine.
Thota is a nice professor, but when it comes to teaching; she's horrible. This is a self-taught class and she doesn't help you at all during her office hours. Her videos are confusing and doesn't reply to messages fast. If you can teach yourself the concepts, then take her. The textbook is important in order to understand the material!
I enjoyed this class and Thota as a professor. She seems intimidating and hard but in office hours, she's extremely helpful. The class is self taught, I liked how specific her videos are to the course and class time was used as a review and clarification time. Go to office hours, use the textbook, and make SI sessions if you can and you'll be fine
Thota is not passionate about teaching. She doesn't care about her students. Don't even bother go to class, because all she makes you to do is watch her youtube videos. She talks about random stuff in class instead of teaching. Even if you go to her office hour, she wouldn't even care or try to help you. Don't take her.
She is extremely understanding. I had a lot going on my spring semester and she always wanted to find ways to help me succeed. GO TO CLASS. The class is easy.
I took this class in the summer. So, it was more fast paced than fall or spring classes, but the class was pretty straight forward. We were only quizzed and tested on stuff that was either on the youtube video or lecture. The youtube videos helped to prepare before the actual lecture. That way, we were able to do actual problems in class.
If she didn't make videos, you wouldn't see the material before class to prepare yourself. Videos are great. Intended flow: 1)YouTube videos & TAKE NOTES (2) come to class (3) complete worksheets AND txtbk hw for EACH chapter (4) office hours for any questions, or stay after class. Simple. Follow these steps for success. She's thorough, but fair.
Dr. Thota structures her class a bit differently than courses I have taken before. She posts all of her lectures online for you to watch before class then works through sample problems during class time. I did not love this style of teaching, but i got through it with a decent grade.
The content of Chem1211K is not difficult to grasp; however, the way Thota formulates her quizzes vs. the way she prepares you for them is a disaster. For example, she will give you a quiz on Wednesday, tell you that balancing equations is on it as well as polyatomic ions and when you go to take it there are whole other concepts on there.
she expects you to basically remember everything that you learned from sophomore of high school. They way she approaches the class is infuriating because she doesnt do a good job of explaining. She moves quickly but that is the same with all professors. She also threatens to take away your phone like a high school teacher.
Her method of teaching is giving letting you watch youtube videos and then you do practice problems in lectures. She goes off topic a lot.
Not great at all! Videos don't help. takes one class period to do one example problem. Showed up on test day w/o enough copies and blamed it on us saying "we only show up on test days." pretty sure she's supposed to be prepared regardless. ended up getting less than 20 min on test
CURVED THE MESS OUT MY GRADE AT THE END OF THE SEMESTER
She never really explained her chapters well, and would skip over some material. She is a nice woman when it come to your personal well-being, but other than that make sure you watch the videos, go to tutoring sessions, and SI sessions.
You will fail sometimes or maybe even a lot, but don't give up. Make sure you know the material and you'll end up with an A or B.
Posted videos to "teach" the lectures and wasted lecture time going over a FEW problems. Withdrew and took it again with a much better professor.
If I could, I would go back and opt not to take her. I'm a great student and spend a lot of my energy studying; however, she doesn't put grades up nor does she seem to care about students doing well in her class. She deals with hundreds of students and shows it by her demeanor. Read through the book to hopefully do well.
Shes a great teacher. I highly recommend her, the subject is TOUGH. Plan to spend time outside of class working hard for your grade. She is very fair grading and genuinely cares about the students. But she doesnt just give grades away. You have to earn them.
I recommend that you stay away from her because although she does warn you about an upcoming quiz, she is a very tough grader. In addition to that, she gives you a very vicious look whenever you ask her a question.
I only had her for my Chemistry 1212K Lab. She would show up late and whenever we were in lab she would be no where to be found. We mostly relied on the teaching assistants. She usually had an attitude whenever someone asked her a question. We would take quizzes but never saw our grades. I do not recommend taking any of her classes.
DO NOT take this professor. she literally does not care about your grade. on exam days she would show up 30 minutes later and not give enough time to take it. the tests are super hard. she doesn't teach in class and just complains about us. we learn from her videos.
I am at a loss for words. Thota singlehandedly ruined my chances at the nursing program. 1151K she didnt prepare us at all for the final exam, had straight as up until the end by self teaching. Failed the final. 1152K she makes us watch videos and then tests us on that. She lost one of my tests and gave me a 0, even dean of students couldnt help
Always shows up late, sometimes more than 30 mins. Will post practice exams online but the real test will be nothing like it if you get version B of the test! Version A, is basically the same practice test and will get a much higher pass rate than vB- no one knows why! Takes whole class to solve on problem. SWITCH YOUR PROF WHILE YOU CAN
Dr. Thota is a good instructor. Chemistry is a tough subject so the frustration shouldn't be taken out on the teacher. Read the chapters, study before every class, listen to the teacher, actually come to class and stay until the end and you should be fine. Go to SI sessions and tutoring. The course is challenging but her grading is fair.
While she can be a good lecturer at times she can often spring quizzes on tricky subject matter that most of the class has not grasped. However, even if you fail a few, make sure to work hard and read the chapters she assigned as well as looking up content that better explains trickier subject matter and you will be able to succeed in the class.
Although Dr. Thota was a nice professor, her lectures were often sped up and didn't care to explain to much into detail because she thought she needed to continue with the course versus the class actually grasping the material. She would do pop quizzes even though the quiz would be said to be on another day. Unless you grasp chemistry change prof.
I had to withdraw from this class because it would have ruined my chances of getting into the nursing program. Although her tests were multiple-choice, the material was still hard to grasp in the class. She would give us pop quizzes knowing the class is still confused. No other opportunities to boost your grade other than pop quizzes and tests.
There are no powerpoints or any type of notes. All she does is talk and occasionally write stuff down in a notebook. She gives pop quizzes and random worksheets. Whenever she feels like it, she will grade some of the worksheets. You basically have to self teach yourself and read the textbook. If you don't go to class be prepared to be lost and mad.
Professor Thota is a pretty good teacher. Her lectures are very clear and so are exams. The thing with Chemistry is that you have to practice Bc its very math heavy, so what I did was just go to the last page of the section and do practice problems and Im golden. If you go to her office hours, shell be more than happy to help you.
Chem 1211K is a tough class but not the hardest, unfortunately Dr,THota spends way too much time giving life advices and lecturing the class about "the new generation", and not enough teaching the actual class material. As a result you'll be required to teach yourself most of the class material and you can forget about in class revision.
Her lectures are honestly very clear most of the time, but she does not care about your anxiety. We've had 5 pop quizzes over material we JUST learned either that day or the day before. For most of our pop quizzes, we have 10 minutes to complete 20 questions and says "its for participation" and grades based on accuracy. Its fun to make a 40!
Does not give clear coherent lectures. Will skim over one topic and randomly move on to something unrelated. Not helpful to see in her office hours. Will give instructions then contradict herself. Not a helpful teacher
If you don't want to study for six hours a day for two weeks and still fail the test, then don't take this professor. The material wouldn't be difficult if Dr. Thota actually taught the class instead using confusing analogies to try and explain simple concepts. She provides no guidance or insight to the material and the class becomes self taught.
Dont take this class, it can definitely ruin your gpa!!! Very little grades and very confusing lectures! Also beware of pop quizzes almost every week even if the entire class is confused.
The final exam was ACS so it wasn't too similar to the lecture content. She doesn't care about attendance. Most problems worked out are from the textbook and she uploads sample exams on iCollege. The class size is very large so it can be tricky to ask questions directly when you want. She briefly goes over topics rather than in depth.
Professor Thota is the typical university professor you are warned about in high school. The quizzes and tests mean so much and you only can get so much help from her. I often had to receive assistance from my Chem Lab teacher to understand concepts.
Super hard class! A lot of pop quizzes and homework assignments that affect your grade. Attendance isn't mandatory but if you miss one lecture, you miss a lot so I would advise you to go to each class.
She is a crazy hard grader. She will say she will not grade something and then end up grading it.
She ruined my eligibility for nursing school. I didn't miss a single class and I took good notes, I also had a tutor, attended SI, used the textbook that was not required, and attended office hours. She glares at students when they ask her questions and runs late to class almost everyday. NEVER answers emails. CHANGE YOUR PROFESSOR WHILE YOU CAN.
If you can just learn by listening then youll like her, but if you need actual one on one teaching or an explanation outside of class shes no help... if you pay attention youll be fine but I wouldnt recommend her
Chem 1211k is a hard class in general but having a decent professor probably would have helped. No PowerPoints, lectures are from her notebook so you better be a good note taker. expect pop quizzes. Still not fully sure how her grading on quizzes and homework works. No test drops compared to other 1211k professors. Good luck, I needed it.
Would not recommend
Do NOT take this professor. I did everything I could to prepare for this class and I received a C (Which I never get). I paid for my own personal tutor, went to office hours, and attended to SI's. The professor seemed like she didn't want to help. Chemistry is hard but she made it harder than it needs to be.
Before taking this class, when i read the online review i was Pre-class anxiety if that's a thing. she is so far one the best professor that is had in Georgia state university. she never teaches form a PowerPoint, meaning that she knows her stuff. BY THE WAY, all the teat are booked based. so read the book do the practice problem you will be good.
DO NOT TAKE THOTA"S CLASS!!! If you care about your gpa do not take her class. I went to every stem session that GSU has to offer for chemistry. Went to all the SI sessions and still I had to drop her class. She likes to talk about how her rate my professor ratings suck. Well that is because she SUCKS!! She does give out study guides for test.
Literally the worst teacher Ive ever had. Im sure she is a good person but she doesn't know how to teach people who haven't learned the material before. He grading is all over the place. She is NOT consistent AT ALL. She takes weeks to get grades back to you and you have to self teach yourself everything. HORRIBLE
Prof Thota is an extremely smart lady, but she simply does not put enough effort into teaching this class. She does not post resources online, and if she does, they are commonly mislabeled or disorganized. Due dates announced less than 24 hours before. Her lectures are rushed and disorganized. Hard class made much harder by a lack of initiative.
Prof thota is a smart lady. However, the way she runs her class is awful. She is not caring even when students come to ask her about ways they can improve. DO NOT TAKE HER IF YOU WANT TO LEARN STUFF. SHE WAS SO CLOSE TO RUINING MY SEMESTER AND MY GPA. Only reason I may pass now is because of Covid 19 allowing everything to be online.
Professor Thota doesn't give out pop quizzes anymore. When we had homework assignments, they usually weren't graded or really required. I spent a majority of my time trying to understand the material. I understand a lot better taking time to learn at home during COVID now. Now, with COVID, she has more things to grade us on. It was harder in class.
I have a GPA of 4.2 going into junior year, and this will be my first non-A/A+. I attended every lecture and used every extra resource. She doesn't seem to care about the worries of the majority of the class. NOT having class with her has caused my grade to improve because I have more time to teach myself the material. Please take someone else.
I honestly think this is the worst professor and department @GSU. She doesn't care about anyone only her A+ students which are few and far in-between. She isn't helpful at all and makes everyone feel stupid if you ask questions. She only wanted to help me right before finals after I had tried to reach out numerous times about how I was struggling.
She isn't so bad, she makes sure you understand. Study and attend every lecture. A calculator is required for every test and there will be about 2-3 questions on it. She gave us 10 minutes, which isn't a lot of time. However, if you know the material then you will pass. Learn your periodic table, positive/negative charges, and formulas.
You need to attend lectures if not you'll feel lost. This was the class I struggled with the most. Rarely asked questions because I felt dumb asking in class. The tests are okay partly straight forward, you just have to do a lot of memorizing for them.
If you have her for an online class, CHANGE PROFS. She is very unaccommodating, even when the whole class is on a WebEx call asking her to change deadline times/class formats. Her directions are unclear, but she gives attitude and makes when you feel dumb when you ask for clarification. I learned nothing, video lectures don't have enough content.
out of all the classes ive taken, this one is probably my least favorite. she did not seem like she cared about her students, showed up late all the time, and was extremely unaccomodating. going to class isnt exactly mandatory but she does give out pop quizzes.
Honestly , I dont know why a lot of people complain about her . She is not mean .. she is nice . But she does make you work for your grade . I had her over the summer online . Her study guides are conceptual not mathematical. I recommend going to her office hours and actually asking her questions, but be specific.
oh my god i had to drop her and change my major. She wont teach even if one person is talking in a lecture hall of over 100 people. God this class was the worst.
her lectures are helpful but she gets mad when students ask questions and tends to call them out. attendance is kind of important. the class isnt too hard tbh but if chemistry isnt your thing, you might want to take another professor.
Avoid this professor at all costs if you can. You are expected to learn things on your own and the class lectures aren't much help. There are weekly quizzes and homework due. When you try asking this professor questions she will cut you off before you can even finish the question. I emailed her concerned about the class and she didn't seem to care.
okay professor, this class is pretty challenging but just make sure you attend all the lectures to get a better understanding & do all your assignments. you can pass this class with at least a B but it may be rough at first because organic chem is hard.
I thought biochem was harder than organic-chem because there's more information. She knows the materials well but her notes are unorganized, and it was kind of hard to understand. You can't just depend on the lecture, you HAVE to read the textbook to fully comprehend. She was behind schedule and we didn't get to do some of the HW and quizzes.
Some people are good scientists but not meant to be professors, this is her case. The class has no structure. The student is expected to learn as they go which is total bs. I told her I did not understand what was going on and she and the TA's laughed at my concerns. Would not recommend this class if you care about your grades.
Professor Thota does not teach. you have to teach yourself in order to pass the class. Her lectures are basically useless. Out of the other chem professors she teaches the least but her exams are the most simple. If you dont teach yourself, you cannot pass. She gives homework and such but is nothing like whats on the exam.
I've never had a professor who cares so little for their students. Her lectures are absolutely terrible u might as well not go bc guess what I learned the entirety of chemistry from Organic Chemistry Tutor on YouTube & she taught me NOTHING. Her tests are fairly easy but she makes concepts harder than they should be. If u self teach you'll be fine.
Lectures are VERY slow and not engaging. The class was 50 minutes and she was late most of the time. Exams are very basic, so she taught information that was unnecessary. No class structure: very scattered/ random. No quizzes or in-class activities just HW and Exams. Everything can be learned from YouTube or textbook. Overall, a very boring class
You will need to attend SI sessions and find good YouTube channels or you won't pass. I couldn't stay awake in her lectures and I always sat in the front. Now I'm a dance major and all my work was for nothing lol
She took attendance out of grade calculation and even with attending very few lectures I can't recommend. Barely adhered to the syllabus, would have to send the same email 2-3 times for a response. Only 50 mins for class and she was regularly late and scattered so very little teaching occurred. I essentially taught myself.
Professor Thota was helpful and understanding with technical issues in lab submissions and explaining during pre lab. Not lecture heavy since it's a lab class. Don't skip a lab because you won't be able to make it up, and make sure to read your lab beforehand, it saves a lot of time and you'll finish quick.
I read her rmp before I took the class. I thought I would teach myself so it would be fine. However, she is not organized, so it's also hard for self-teaching. The class doesn't follow a certain pattern so make sure you keep a good track. And be aware she will require do a lot of things (discussion, lockdown-test, etc.) without giving grades.
Lectures are very clear and don't leave anything up for interpretation which is always appreciated.
She is by far the laziest and most incompetent professor I've ever met. It's ridiculous that she still has a job at GSU. She regularly tells us she doesn't get paid enough to teach us. Her iCollege is a joke. She "forgets" pretty much everything. I emailed her four times since the first week, and I still haven't gotten a reply back. She's pathetic.
This side of the room? Can you confirm?
Always late to class, I would say around 5-7 minutes late everyday. But does she make up for the time though? ABSOLUTELY NOT. VERY inefficient teacher. Everyone should be passing just because the course is self-teachable at this level, not because she is a good teacher. Always complaining rather than changing her attitude.
she is a good professor, does not cover 100% of the material but does make sure you understand the concept. has help/ review sessions once in a while, pauses in between class to make sure our doubts are cleared. she does her best to keep the class active!
thota is so so so so so so so so very stinky. she sucks lol dont take her class!!! if u have a will to live, u wont have one if u take this class.
I don't think anyone likes her. She doesn't care for her students. She literally says she doesn't get paid enough to teach us. Instead of reflecting on the negative reviews, she finds it funny. She honestly doesn't understand why students dislike her. Also, if you are reading this Thota, we aren't laughing with you. We are laughing at you.
Not a good professor.
Hi Dr. Thota. I appreciate the assignment after the exam. It helped me a lot in understanding the concepts. I love it. Thank you so much.
WHO THE HECK KEEPS LEAVING 5.0 REVIEWS ON HER???? SHE'S LITERALLY THE CAUSE OF MY MISERY. NOTHING ABOUT HER IS GOOD.
I have this class every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. It's terrible. I'm not sure how I'm still functioning. The content isn't hard and 99% of the material is self teachable. If you're looking for a lecturer who will teach you something, look somewhere else.
I'm not sure who keeps raising her ratings, but stop. You wouldn't want your children to suffer through this class would you? So don't inflate ratings to trick other students into taking this class.
I don't know why everyone keeps complaining on her rmp. She actually cares about her kids' grades. She always emphasizes to talk with her outside of class. She writes good notes during the lectures. She sometimes answers the email. She is an awesome teacher tbh.
Lazy, disorganized, and can't teach. Takes forever to answer emails, no schedule, and her notebook that she uses to teach is so messy you can't even tell what the notes even mean. She always needs to remind us how busy she is cause she has kids and uses it as an excuse to everything that she doesn't do due to her laziness.
She's nice but she can't teach. She doesn't slow down for anyone and she complains that class with fall behind if too many questions are asked. Don't take this class.
Missing her lectures will put you behind but attending them is so insightful, just make sure to use the textbook to review at home and I'm certain all the concepts will make sense. Exams are extremely heavy (37.5%) - mess up one and you could lose a letter grade but, she does drop the lowest exam grade.
I think she genuinely lacks social cues. She's not a good professor. I don't understand how people are leaving 5.0 reviews... Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if she was leaving reviews on herself. I've contacted the dean and chemistry directors regarding her incompetence, and I think everyone knows how awful she is. Please don't take her.
The 5.0 reviews say "she doesn't go over all the materials" or "she never responds, but she's amazing!" RED FLAGS these people must've been traumatized for them to be satisfied with the absolute bare minimum. For your well-being and well GPA, please do not take her.
If you enjoy teaching yourself chemistry, this class is for you. Personally, I found the lectures to be pretty useless because her teaching style (especially note taking) was so chaotic. Also, she keeps yelling mid way through exams which really annoyed me. The course content is relatively simple if you take a little time on your own to learn.
this teacher made me want to change my major. she swears that her class is easy when its not. chemistry itself is pretty average, but the way she teaches it makes it harder. please do not take her if you enjoy the subject. shes not accessible (she claims she is), the final exam will be NOTHING like what she taught you in the lecture. be warned!
Dr. Thota is a dedicated professor who consistently encourages students to ask questions. Furthermore, she is always available after class and makes time for students not only during office hours but also provides extra review sessions before exams as well. If you want to get a good grade, I highly recommend attending every class and taking notes.
Good professor, content heavy course. Extra credit, helpful HW. Corrects mistakes on test, gives points back, test are fairly easy and relevant. She can be rude in class and patronizes students. I made an A, she definitely helped me get there. Go to lecture, talk to her, prepare for quizzes, they add up. Most people in my class missed class often.
I STRONGLY recommend going to her lectures and studying the topics she goes over as her exam are worth more than the final exam! The final is a state exam by the ACS, strongly advise you do your own studying for the final instead of following her study guide. (TheOrganicChemistry Tutor on YT "General chem 1 review" is the literal ACS EXAM!!)
- Getting to know Professor Thota is almost essential. - I took her for the summer 2022 semester -attend every lecture and get to know her -she can be really funny and does care that you do well in her class. -she does not post slides but her lectures are not hard to follow -a lot of extra ways to earn points toward your final grade.
Dr. Thota is alright. Her lectures are for the most part easy to understand, but occasionally she goes into things that need a bit more explanation than she gives them. She drops one exam and curves most grades though so even with there being some times I had trouble following her I made an A.
Avoid her at all costs. She is very rude and her lectures are not good. You will have to teach yourself the material and the tests have stuff that she never taught us. Drops 5 quizzes but it won't do much to help your grade. The final exam is the ACS Chemistry exam. Highly recommend watching organic chemistry tutor on YouTube.
Professor Thota is not bad at all, to be honest. But, I do advise you teach yourself while also using what she teaches in class. I was scared when reading some of these reviewers in the beginning of the semester, but she really isn't bad. No camera for quizzes. 15-25 question exams.I'm taking her in spring 2023 for chem 1212K. Once again STUDY.
Take this class if you want to study yourself! Her lecture, in my opinion, rarely helped me, and I found that videos online were more helpful. Her attitude was not pleasant whenever I asked her some questions. Her grading criteria were all over the place. This is my warning to you all.
Dr. Thota was very sweet and relatable. Her tests were very similar to the study guide and as long as you paid attention in class and studied about 4-5 hrs a week outside of class it is an easy A. I'm not sure why she gets such bad reviews. Don't get on her bad side or she'll make the class an awful experience for you.
Dr. Thota was a good professor overall. If you come to the lecture and read the textbook, you should be fine. She doesn't have powerpoints or anything, so if you're not coming to class, get notes from your friends. She didn't prepare us for the final very well, so you probably have to spend a lot of time learning ACS stuff yourself.
she's a great professor. Some might think she's bad but honestly it's just that chemistry's incredibly difficult. She's a kind understanding professor who'll force participation so you'll know what you're doing. If you fail it's 100% your fault.
I'm currently taking her for the summer semester, and it's absolutely horrible. She's completely rushing over things without giving us time to practice or digest concepts. She makes no studyguides for the test or any practice questions and simply says, "look in the textbook". Most of us are overwhelmed because she's very behind. Do not take her.
Dr Thota is very nice and sweet however she is quite disorganized. She does not respond to emails and it will take her a minute to update grades. She explains the content in a relatively simple matter that's easy to understand and makes sure students don't try to confuse themselves with questions. Make sure you read ahead!
Lectures were very unhelpful and very loosely related to the exams, exams were generally on the easier side up until the final. Our entire section seemed woefully unprepared for the Final Exam which is administered by a third party, making it tough to prepare for.
She's a good professor, but she does go pretty fast pace.Chemistry is pretty hard tho. She gives you the opportunity to ask questions though and she even pushes back exams if the class all votes for it. She sometimes gives out quizzes but its open notes and she gives you like 4 days to do them. Definitely get the textbook it will be a lifesaver.
Rushes through concepts entirely too fast and does not give much practice work .
One of the best professors I ever had. Her classes are really fun especially lab!! She explains really well and never rushes. Her quizzes and exams are easy and super fun. She totally helps out by giving great feedbacks!! Would surely recommend to take her classes.
Dr. Thota is a great professor but she has her downs. She is very unorganized and wasn't very thorough with the lectures. Expect few assignments from her class and a long wait on emails. You will mostly have to teach yourself everything if you don't understand in person.
She's a great professor. Im not sure why she has such low reviews. Follow her note system (using the date, paper notes etc) rather than trying to type your notes. supplement your lectures with videos. *She does textbook practices so the textbook is reccommend but honestly I could've been fine just using Chem Libre for the practices with each topic.
She came to class very unorganized and went through 50 million topics in one class and didn't give us time to grasp the concept. Whatever she told us to study was not on the test.said we had an hour on the final exam, 30 minutes into the exam. She said we had 12 minutes left. No extra credit. she is smart at the mouth and will think it's funny.
I had her for lab. She's EXTREMELY rude. She literally tells kids to shoo or get out when they make any mistake. The worst thing is she doesn't explain ANYTHING and is bad at replying. The only reason I had an A, was because of the TA and my friends taught me the info. You know how you can pick 3 tags for a professor- she is none of the good ones.
In her lab class she sits back on her phone and lets the TAs do all the work. She is incredible hard to reach outside of class. I still have no response to my emails to this day! She was often late to lab but had the most to say when we were late. Avoid her if possible!
She did not have many office hours. If you are struggling she basically just says oh well and leaves you behind. She is incredibly hard to reach outside of class. I still have no response to my emails to this day! If you have her good luck!
Dr.Thota is funny and cares about her students, but I don't think she prepared us well for the time limit on the final, and I wished she had given us more study guides.
DO NOT TAKE. All around just terrible. She has no care in the world for her students: Doesn't respond to emails, sloppily explains concepts, assigns online graded practice homework that doesn't tell you what you got right or wrong, and her way of teaching is copying concepts from OpenStax into an illegible notebook that is hard to follow/refers.
Dr. Thota is a great person. Very funny and wants her students to pass. But simply put, her teaching style sets you up to fail. Assigning several assignments a week before finals, no powerpoints, saying that "I understand you have other stuff going on, but they don't matter when it comes to my class." It's just not viable and you WILL fail.
She does not know how to teach. 70-80% of the class is absent during lectures, while on exam days the class is full (this tells a lot about this teacher). I suffered in this class so im telling everyone who is reading this to NOT take the class. People who wrote 5 stars are lying or they are fake accounts. class is 100% self study.
I failed this class noooooooo! I used to want to go to medical school but my dream can not be achieved now. I am very very sad...
Dr. Thota is nice but can be disorganized at times. Her lectures are sometimes confusing, especially when her example problems from class turn out to be incorrect. Make sure to review all homework and iCollege assignments because some correct answers will be marked as wrong. Make sure to point this out to her so that you can get the points back.
Thota literally made me love chemistry again. Many people say she's hard or not a good teacher but some of these people did not go to class or did not pay attention. She teaches her lectures by writing by hand so its easier to understand and she also encourages the class to ask questions. Only thing that she isnt the best at is responding to emails
One of the worst professors I have ever had. She is very condescending to students and does not create a good learning environment at all. Makes concepts more difficult to understand than they already are and even taught completely wrong fundamentals on simple topics like significant figures.
The older reviews of her with better ratings was because she prob enjoyed teaching before. BUT NOW highly dont recommed her notes are trash. communication was so bad for her and she would yell at us. She changed the syllabus because people were failing. Tests are hard and past exams she would give us would not prep up for the next exam.
BY ALL MEANS AVOID HER. WHEN YOU ASK FOR HELP SHE WILL NOT HELP YOU.
She is 100 percent there to do research at the school and does not think about the students in her classes. Textbooks are so confusing to read. Best bet if you have this teacher is to watch organic chemistry. Don't even bother asking her for extra help because she will not help you. SAVE YOUR GPA AND NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
On the first week of school she taught us the wrong fundamental concepts and blamed it on students when we dont call her out when she does something wrong. As a professor if you start blaming the students not telling you it is wrong you need to stop teaching.
I was scared to take this class at first based on the reviews and because it was in the summer. I highly recommend, it was stressful at times since it is a lot of info at one time when taken in the summer. But once we got to the biochem section of the class it was so easy a 100 on every exam. Free books online, you will use textbook. Check Kahoot!
PLEASE DO NOT TAKE! I wanted to see if she was as bad as the reviews said she was... EVERYONE IS RIGHT! She is rude and does not give out study guides, her tests are nothing like her notes. She also does not upload her notes, so attending is a must. If you choose her because the class timing works out, CHANGE ANOTHER CLASS! Please avoid her!
I did not learn much from Dr. Thota's class, despite attending class regularly and taking ample, good notes. She is unclear on the material and does not respond to her emails. I do not recommend her as a professor.
Respectfully, please avoid taking this class with this professor. She never replies to emails, we get graded on little to nothing, and her lectures are confusing. Half the time she's writing in her notebook and yelling at the class "Do you understand YES OR NO" every 5 minutes. Her tests are very different from her "test study guide". Please avoid.
At first, she seems really strict but honestly if you go up to her and ask her about your grades and stuff she will help. IF YOU GOT A LOW GRADE ON A TEST, GO TALK TO HER. IT IS MOST LIKELY AN ERROR WITH THE SCANTRON. I went from a 13% to an 82% on a test because the scantron marked most of mine wrong for some reason.
im not even gon lie to you just AVOID AT ALL COST. like twin you take this class with her and its over for your ahh
The class is quite difficult with this professor. While strict at first, she can be helpful if you reach out. Definitely use unstuckstudy ai along with the textbook to stay on top of the material.
She needs to get fired, she Doesn't know how to teach the class.I didn't pay for college for this time of learning this is outrageous.
AVOID THIS CLASS due to the fact that it is only exams and quizzes. What she teaches most of the due not correlate with the exams she gives out
I had Dr. Thota for lab only, and I thought she was an excellent lab professor. She details all parts of the experiments clearly and outlines the entire course for you. Nothing that you will do in lab will come as a surprise for you, and you will know beforehand what you need to complete before lab and when the next quiz is. Ask questions!!!!!
Often late, very unorganized, and constantly yelling at students for an answer we clearly did not know. Attendance is not mandatory, but if you miss a day, be prepared to play catch up. She tells you to buy a textbook, but the pdf version is online and you RARELY use the textbook, because she does not go in order of the chapters. Good luck!
Lectures are written by hand and can sometimes be confusing, but she encourages students to ask questions when confused. Also gives practice problems which help out a lot. Attendance isn't mandatory, but if you miss a class you're most likely going to be confused because each class builds on top of the last one. Does give extra credit when needed.
Textbook can be found online so I wouldn't worry about that. If you miss one lecture, even though attendance is not mandatory, YOU WILL BE LOST. This class consisted of teaching myself and using the textbook and YouTube videos to pass. Very hard to communicate with her outside of class. If you send an email, it will never get answered back!
Very condescending, doesn't answer questions and instead stares at us wanting us to come up with an answer to our own questions, wasting our time. Her lectures are terrible (She spent half a class period talking about grilled cheese sandwiches once). Your grade relies solely on quiz and test grades. She is often late. Please don't take her class.
I definitely would NOT recommend her to anyone. She doesn't respond to emails, she doesn't give an outline of the course, she doesn't use PowerPoints. She writes notes on the board and expects you to copy them, but her notes are VERY unorganized and don't make sense. She doesn't post her notes after class so if you miss class, it's your loss.
If you get stuck with her then good luck. All you can do is teach yourself and go to tutoring sessions because she doesn't make sense on any topic. Doesn't feel like she's teaching at all
Took her for fall 2024. She teaches in a way that expects students to have done their textbook readings before the lecture. Will do problems from the textbook in class and will clarify some topics. No powerpoints makes it hard for students with no time (jobs, other class, etc.). Pretty difficult overall, would not recommend if you have a job.
Please listen to what everyone else is saying. I don't know where these 3/4/5 stars are coming from, but those are fake lmao. Unable to teach through lectures, unorganized notes and often spends time doing these awful analogies that just confuse you more. Drop her class before your GPA suffers.
She is really kind and forgiving if you communicate like an adult. You need to let her know if something isn't clicking because otherwise she will keep rolling. Pay attention to formulas and tables she assigns to you. Titrations is the hardest part.
I got to gsu late and this was the only professor left but if you can avoid her do so by all means seriously! This is a horrible horrible class with an even worse teacher when i say RUNNNNNNN i mean it. I mean that more than i've meant anything in my whole life please run and do not even think about taking her.
My first chemistry class ever and I hated it. It was disorganized and it took a hit on my mentality. I managed to get a C+ in that class, which impacted my GPA, obviously. If you don't want to feel like a failure after taking a chemistry, which is already hard...avoid this class.
Only way to pass is to skip! Lecture made ZERO sense, she flips around sections of the textbook, and spent 3 entire classes on material everyone understood while dedicating 10 minutes to material integral to the final. It felt like high school. Saving grace is the text is free and she offered EC on some HW. No class should be so miserable.
Lectures are terrible, wish they had some structure other than her just writing in her notebook. She is confrontational with students for no good reason at times and is strict.
Do not take her. She doesn't really teach anything she just writes down a bunch of notes and expects you to get it. You're going to need a tutor, a study group, and the textbook in order to really understand anything she's going over in class. She has an accent as well for those who don't do that.
exams she gives does not match the review papers she gives out.
i drove with my seatbelt off before her lecture in hopes of dying. if this class is required for your major and there's no other teacher SWITCH MAJORS. i would rather army crawl through broken glass than take this class again. each class felt like i was being waterboarded. please please please listen to these reviews DONT TAKE THOTA. HORRIBLE. RUN!
If you can find another professor to take chem. Literally the most stressed I've ever been. Only good thing is she gives extra credit.
RUN! Take another professor if you can pls listen to the reviews.
DONT take if you use classwork/notes to study. expects you to learn from any gen chem textbook and only writes her own notes with her own abbreviations so it's hard to look back and understand the notes. In this class, you're honestly gonna have to teach yourself mostly everything. Not good if you prefer attentive professors.
