He's an awesome math teacher. He helps as much as possible, he's accent was tough at the beginning but he is hispanic so when i wouldn't understand I'd ask in spanish. Great professor over-all.
He is from Brazil actually, very very hard to understand. He says menos instead of minus, basically speaks Spanglish. I taught myself everything. He's nice but not for someone who needs a clear professor.
His accent is a little tough to understand at first but if you speak Spanish and ask him in Spanish he'll explain. His class is based on 4 test and he reviews before. The test are no more than 10 questions ALL fill in the blank, no multiple choice. I passed Mat0029 with a P and I'm not taking him for MGF1106. The my math lab is required.
He knows the material and he uses many formulas and symbols to explain. He doesn't give many tests. Only 3 tests including the final. He gives group PowerPoint projects too.
This was a really different math course, and in positive way. Like he says: "the most important thing is WHY". He is NOT a professor that teach you to repeat some procedures, he teach you to understand what is behind the procedures, putting many interesting practical examples. Although the test are difficult, the evaluation is flexible...
I've learnt a lot in his classes. Usually, he had to make a review of previous Calculus courses to explain the meaning of the concepts. He said that, in practice, no one computes an integral with pencil and paper, there are many softwares that are more efficient than all us. So, the most important is knowing the concepts and the theorem, and the bo
He was great. If Math is not your best, I HIGHLY recommend him. He pushes you to go to tutoring & though his accent was strong, his message about learning something & not just memorizing a concept or an equation was a positive message. Def a great professor!
For those who need math in their profession or simply find math interesting, Jyrko is an awesome professor. He explains very well, making emphasize in the logic steps. Not multiple choice tests. He really tries you become a better professional.
Dont take everything as given. If you want to learn i really recommend this proffessor. He goes through the material and makes you understand what you dont know or never had a clue. Very inspirational. Pay attention, put your neurons to work and you will pass.
Excellent professor. He has crystal clear understanding of the concepts he teaches and is able to communicate his ideas well. Nontraditional style of teaching. No homework, just study from your notes. He tough both linear algebra and diff. eq. in one class. Take him if you want to learn. Don't worry too much about your grade, you'll be ok.
Could be a great teacher but it takes a lot of concentration and understanding. His teaching methods is what makes this class so difficult. I have passed every other math class I have ever had with an A. Its hard for me to get it, but I always do. With him, I had to teach myself a lot because he would take twenty extra steps to solve a problem.
Rude Professor. I am fluent in english and Spanish, however this professor has such a heavy Spanish accent when he speaks english, I understood less than 50% of what he was saying. He speaks so fast, and constantly speaks incorrect english, and says things in Spanish through out the class. He is very arrogant, and reluctant to help.
This has been my best experience with math. Jyrko actually cares about his students, and explain everything in all its details. I am learning where the formulas come from and how to think mathematically. His first lectures had an impact on me, I thought it would be rather difficult to pass the course, but now I know everything is going to be ok.
AWESOME!!! The very very best!!! He goes so deep in the subject that following him requires a lot of concentration. Most likely you will ask: Am I in the correct course? And the answer is YES! You will see that when you get used with his style, other professors are going to appear boring...
I went to this course with the intention of only passing the course, with the less effort possible. One day, I was asking him: Is this goingto be in the test? DoI have to learn this? He told me: This course is for those that want to learn, if you don't want, it would be better dropping the course, because I will always try to teach you. I changed!
This has been the most challenging course I have ever taken! I think Jyrko is offering an university-level course, and up there is where I want to be. It is being hard, but he is helping. He even created a group on Facebook to discuss the exercises and handouts.
AMAZING! He is so demanding, his lessons are difficult and hilarious, but he cares about you like a good father... If you are lazy and not interested in learning, don't take him!! If you want to learn, I strongly recommend him!!!
Simply the best! He loves math and forces you to understand. I think if you do everything he says, you are going to pass and most likely you'll receive a grade much better than that you were expecting for. He is so fashion and smells more than good!!!
This Professor is super good. He is the best math teacher I've had. Tbh the way he teaches is incredibly hard, because he wants you to understand why something happens, lots of examples. He has a strong accent, but math is about numbers.. so that doesnt matter. I really enjoy his class. Also, he only gives four tests and a Final Exam, which it's harder than the rest. Be ready to pay attention in class, and if you don't do well in class and the exams he will drop you. He also gives reviews for the exams which are almost as hard as the exam. He has a genuine way of grading the material. He doesn't give homework. Unlike another student I haven't smelled him, and the clothes aren't relevant at all, but he is cracking jokes and well dressed.
No professor cared about teaching us like Jyrko. I am not a repeater of not understood things anymore, now I can reason a problem, I can construct solutions to problems that I never see before. We are studying the RSA algorithm, created by MIT researchers, worldwide used for encrypting messages, and it is being the best math experience in my life!
Now I know: an easy professor cares about itself, not about you... If you don' t learn, what are you going to do later when you are supposed to be who knows? Professor Jyrko is a very rare professor, a real gem!!
I am not a math person, and never have I been. I took this as my first Dual Enrollment course, and I've got to say that this professor is absolutely amazing: the BEST math teacher I've ever had. He is accommodating to an extremely, knows the names of all of his students, and truly cares. If you can, take his class.
This professor made me see Mathematics from a different angle. As a computer engineering major, this class was an excellent experience because it helped me discover my creative side. I will take this professor next semester again.
BEST PROFESSOR EVEEEERRRRR!!!
Best professor ever!
Don't be afraid, he is fair! He is the best one! But if you show you don't care about the subject, most likely you are in trouble... Otherwise, he is going to try to help you as much as possible!
Wish I could take all my math classes with him! Simply the best!!!! And yes! He smells soooooo good!!!!! He is a very handsome man ;)
He made the material as simple as can be which is very difficult in itself. He motivates you to learn in new ways because that's required to pass this course. Cares for all of his students to do well, can't ask for more.
The best! He forces you to think and it seems to be we are not used to doing that, at least not the way math requires. But math is everywhere, so, we need it... Don't give up, do what he commands!
I have had to come back here to say: "thanks, Dr. Correa!" I am now at the university and there is no course that I remember more than yours! Your lectures have been a great asset to my formation! Trust him, guys, this professor knows very well what he is doing!!!
He is way different any traditional professor. It is shocking! At the beginning, I was struggling a lot, but at the middle of the course, I found myself incredibly enjoying the lessons a lot. Dr. Correa is not a professor for uninterested people whatsoever, but if you wanna learn how math works in practice, go to his class!
I honestly don't know what happened and I don't know how I passed
AMAZING!!!! The tests are difficult, a clear reflection of the lectures, but you learn too much solving the tests and also then when he brings the tests back after having reviewed them. A lot of comments, a lot of ideas. I haven't had another math professor coming close to Dr. Correa! Take him, guys!
Best Math professor at MDC!!!!!!!. He is so awesome. He likes to explain every detail and where it comes from .Take him you won't regret.
After the final, he met each of the student to discuss the tests and the final. He provided the main ideas to solve the exercises and gave the opportunity of redoing some of them. If that is not helping, tell me what it is... He is a very good professor, accesible and kind, but also demanding and does not like people behave like a naughty kid...
He is the best one! I wish I could take all my math course with him! I strongly recommend him.
His class is extremely hard. If you are used to learning by popular education, don't take him. He will try to explain the most simplest topics the most difficult way. Heavy accent as well. In addition, he doesn't follow any text book which is extremely hard when it comes to the test because you have nothing to follow. The test he makes are hard.
If you dont want to learn, dont take him! But he is the best one! He demands a lot, because he wants the best for you!
Trust me, Don't take him !!!!
I got surprised some people is talking bad things about this excellent professor. He has published articles in machine learning and discrete math and his lecture has high quality. Lecture heavy is not a good description. I think there are many students looking for a crappy course, not for learning. If you aren't one of those, take him
Worst professor ever!!!!!! DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!
Very smart and interesting, but his teaching style made no sense. There is zero structure. Doesn't use a book, no homework, starts class super late, leaves examples unfinished, then expects you to understand what's going on with no way to practice, favors certain students. Many struggled with his style. Take him only if you know how to mind read.
Seemed to be he has a close relationship with some students, but I saw that these were taking various courses with him, so he knows them better. Actually Im not one of those; however he asked me for redoig my second test in an attempt to give me a second chance. Third test was take-home. His style is simply university style rather than college's
Jyrkko is an extremely smart guy and he expects a lot out of his students, he truly cares that you learn the material and will push you to the point of breaking. Do not take his class if you want an easy grade and are going to drop out at a challenge, take his class if you actually want to learn the content.
Prof. Jirko is a very good choice for any Math class. The class itself was very heavy but he does his best to make everybody to understand. Very approachable also. I would take him again for sure.
Proff. Dr. Jyrko is a very good mathematician! His activities are always challenging and engaging, if you actually like Math. If you are trying to get an easy grade, I recommend you to avoid his courses since they require time, effort and work. I personally have learned a lot in his lectures, and now, I have started seeing math more easily.
I have never been more motivated to learn. Jyrko truly cares about each of his students and although his classes are extremely difficult, it's because he wants to expose you to a more abstract way of thinking and learn WHY you do things instead of just knowing how to apply a formula and compute basic problems. I highly recommend any of his classes
doesn't use the textbook, doesn't assign homework and gives practice questions days before the test. If you don't understand what's going on in class then you're screwed. Not a single tutor could help me with his practice problems. you have no way of knowing your grade until grades are submitted at the end of the semester do not take him
Best Math professor in MDC. It wont be easy, but youll learn math from a different perspective.
He is not only by far the best math professor at MDC, but also an excellent person who is always willing to help you out. I am so grateful to gave once had him as my professor.
He is not only by far the best professor at MDC, but also an excellent person who is always willing to help you out. It was a pleasure to be part of his class.
He isn't a conventional professor whatsoever! He omits many of the typical protocols: calling attendance, following textbook robotically, multiple choice tests. It is only a board, markers and a very smart and instructed brain. His organization is superior and his thinking is crazy. If you can't follow him, isn't his fault! It's another league...
1) hardest math professor 2) if you dont understand something ask him after class or go to tutors 3) study a lot 4) do extra credits
He is so willing to share with us everything he knows! However, I've noticed that bad students don't stand a chance with him. "Don't make me waste my time" He'd say. Also, he's doing research. A friend of mine is working with him and told me that they're participating in international events and doing papers, whatever the later thing means.. Great!
The professor was always late, would dismiss the class early, would get upset when we told him we didn't understand the equations or explanation. Most of the class failed the first exam. Had us do a power point presentation in Math!?!? Not a very good communicator. I had to drop the class. I felt like I wasted my time and money.
His discrete math class is just fabulous! Obviously, if you don't learn you won't pass, but it's rather noticeable that Dr. Jyrko wishes we all learn and he works for that! Super caring, super devoted. The notes are not completely ready yet, but I think that when finished they will be great! Thank you, Dr.!
He is simply the best!
Best Math professor at MDC!
Jyrko is the best math professor at MDC by far. His lectures are intense and inspiring; he goes very in depth into concepts. Aside from being a great human and professor, Dr. Correa's main attribute I would say is his love for mathematics and how he is able to transmit this to others. If you have intellectual curiosity, please take him.
Teachers in mdc will make you follow a pattern, if you don't do this a certain way it wont be correct. Not with him, he opened my mind and though me how to think, how to break down a problem and solve it. If you are willing to learn, he will be there for you, after taking him, any math related course will be easy. Gracias profe, te veo en discreta!
He is awesome! There were several people with no interest in my class and sometimes he looks unmotivated and bored; but he's the best! I was wondering: Is it fair that the one of us who want to learn bear the brunt just because crappy mates don't let the class happening well doing stupid questions and comments??? Thank you, Dr. Jyrko!
Great Professor! If you need help you can go during his office hours and he will help! He cares that you actually understand the lecture. Gives sites for extra help. It's you that has to put time into studying this course. Hard class, great professor!!
Best professor in MDC.
The course has just started, but so far the lectures are hilarious!
jumps from topic to topic and leaves you feeling lost. I would go to tutors and they were confused with his methods. No study guide or anything to even remotely prepare you for the test.
He is the best professor for students who speak Spanish. The class is extremely challenging and he is also great, has a lot of passion for teaching. However, they speak Spanish all the time that sometimes i feel lost. If you speak Spanish, take him because you will understand better. If not, you are going to need Jesus in person.
Stay away if you want to pass. This professor just wants to show you how smart he is. He is not the typical profesor and that might seem nice at first. Then he lectures you like you have to figure the rest out. Jumps from one topic to the next and moves quickly. You have to study on your own becauce no toutor would understand his methods.
for people taking discrete math. He is a really nice professor and probably cares, but so difficult for the wrong reasons. Questions on test are so more harder and trickier then they are in class and notes, teaches way to fast, and is fixated on you answering in his way. I personally would go with someone else if you can. Whole class is struggling.
Do Not take this guy! I REPEAT do not take him. 1. He doesnt give you a syllabus to keep track of what chapter youre going to go over in class. 2. In the beginning of class he said he doesnt take attendance because he doesnt care if we dont come.4. He doesnt give online assignments to HELP you boost your grade up or even help you understand.
Dr. Correa teaches mathematics like no other professor would. He's knowledgeable in many concepts of mathematics. As a math major i can say that he's way of teaching is the best way for those students who wants to learn pure mathematics. Amazing professor, will take him again.
Worst professor ever. Changes topics too fast. The little homework or practice that he gives does not even relate to the test. I would go to tutoring for help and even they won't understand. Avoid if possible.
People are lying! They dont realize Correa's class is for students who want to learn. Simply the best! Super respected. Tutors help but they fear to be wrong. Besides, he gave us at least 20 extra points for each test, used Piazza not only for online homework but to discuss the exercises, provided MANY exercises. Good students always take him!!
This was the hardest class I have ever taken. The profesor does not follow a book or sylabus. You have to really keep up not to get lost. Never taking a class with this guy. Make sure you are only taking this class because it is draining. I was so lost & tutoring did not help. You have to teach yourself. Big group at first then people left.
First day, the guy said: this is a two-in-one course thought for students who got A or B in 1105. In a regular semester, this course goes very fast; now you can realize that in the summer it flies. You gotta study regularly! Then the guy does what he told us before anything else and people who shouldn't be therecomplain. This guy is a reference for
I think Dr. Correa is one of those very few professor that really care about teaching. He is demanding, but also super accessible. I feel very comfortable speaking with him freely. However, if you are lazy and don't want to attend class nor do what you have to do, then you don't stand a chance. But I you have high academic aspirations , TAKE HIM!!!
Dr. Jyrko is an awesome professor. Highly recommend. Really cares about his students. ALOT OF EXTRA CREDIT
Avoid if you can. This professor just confuses you and wants to prove how smart he is.
If you are planning to transfer to a nice university, Dr. Correa is mandatory. I think no other math professor will prepare you to university-level math classes. I saw in his door, four MDC students who did research under his supervision were transferred to MIT. Obviously, at MDC, some students find him impossible...
This is by far the BEST profesor that I ever had. Mr. Correa teach you in a different way, he makes you use your BRAIN and common sense unlike all these profesor that only teach you how to use the calculator and give you a study guide for the exam with the same exercises. You dont have to buy the book or any digital program. Always accessible.
Will not say his course(s) is/are easy in the least. But if you plan to learn and take your knowledge of math to the next level, you definitely should take him. Very unorthodox, unconventional style of teaching which doesn't follow the book at all. Pay attention at all times and you will struggle, but things will stick. I definitely recommend him!
Dr. Correa is the best professor I've ever had. Not only he knows the content perfectly, but he has a super nice energy and devotion. He cares about teaching well. Professors and tutors admire him!
Well let just say if you want to actual learn and are not good at math i will pass on this professor. I did not learn anything in his class. He has no patience with people and expects you to know everything already. Its so frustrating. Do yourself a favor and look for a better math teacher. He complicated everything. His class was a nightmare.
The pattern in clear: if you don't want to learn or are extremely attached to that high-school approach of step-by-step and mechanic exercises, you'll say he's awful. If you are pursuing a degree in Computer Science/Engineering and dream of being a great professional, he's a gift! He'll open your mind and will push you forward, with care! The best!
He is simply the best! MDC is plagued with terrible professors with which you can get A easily, no matter who bad you are. This guy is a real gem! He teaches you how to think, how to related concepts and computations. Obviously, that needs a few neurons AND a good actitud AND pre-requisites.
I took him 4 years ago, and I am still inspired by this professor - so much so I was telling a friend from an upstate uni about him, and she immediately cut me off and said she and her friend - who won a national mathematics champ under his assistance - had taken and adored his class. I have rarely seen a person care so profoundly about others.
This guy is no joke. Yes, his class is hard but you will learn a lot. I took his Calc 3 class 5 years after graduating college (studying for my PhD). He kick-started my math education. I had forgotten a lot of concepts and had to catch up. Studied a lot and did the homework problems. I wish he would teach higher-level math classes. Great guy!
He is amazing , smart, specific, pacient ,perfect. I really recommended for Mat1033 and Mac1105.
Great professor!
He has a slight accent, but makes sure that everyone can understands. Even if the students start speaking a different language, he'll translate. He is so smart, very good teacher, helpful and friendly even outside class schedule. He just has students hanging out in his office learning calculus and having fun. I wish I had him from the beginning.
The professor is really out of this world. He gives lots of feedback for you to better your learning. However as many as you get if you dont put effort you wont pass. This class is a true challenge and the true college experience. After done with the class I felt satisfied and good with myself. Really recommend him.
Here's my take on professor Correa: Prof is very knowledgeable, also loves his students, but the class is hard, I can say the hardest I have ever taken, You will have to put the hard work in to understand everything and pass the class with real knowledge, it really helps if you are CS, SE, or IT major. Do the work in this class and you will learn!
If you only speak English, dont take him. Accent is very heavy. While working out problems, he doesnt finish them. Ask for practice problems for the test, he says he doesnt give those. You will be extremely confused .
Look dont get me wrong hes an amazing lecturer and a great person! I would take him again but right now he refused to teach the class how it was supposed to and asynchronously. Avoid for the moment if youre not good with online work and no lectures. It is extremely difficult.
This is one of the worst class I have ever taken. Right when you think you actually understand something, the next class he comes in with something that's 100 times more difficult. If you work and go to school or you have other things going on in your life, don't take this class because it requires a lot of time to study the material.
Teacher is hard to get in contact with, took the class online opens all the assignments and there all due at the end of the semester. midterm and final proctored.
You can tell Prof. Correa cares about math and education, and he wants the students to learn and succeed in the class. His lectures have a great pace and are concise, but if you have a question he will happily answer. Tests were hard but reasonable. Some people struggled in the class but it's basic logic and should really not be so difficult.
Super sweet teacher. I had medical complications and he let me take the whole class from home and do the final at home too. Very caring professor.
Final grade are based on 2 things (Midterm & Final) both are proctored,35% of your grade each. ALL assignments (Quizzes, HW, Discussion) at 100%, but fail one of the 2 main exams below 60% you fail the class. If you're not a good at taking a midterm and final, DO NOT take this professor. Also does not answer to any message concering grades or work.
In the beginning I had the opinion that he was tough and he's somewhat. But motivated by him I started watching lectures from top universities such as MIT, Johns Hopkins and I realized professors at these universities have the same style. It's a blessing having him at MDC! He cares a lot for us, explains super super well, and is super accessible!
He's basically a narcissist. Tough grader and obsessed with his own career. They should hire more professor for Linear Algebra.
One of the best professors I ever had. If you want to learn math he is the right professor. I just want to thank Dr. Correa very much for the course. I enjoyed every minute of his lecture.
I've just finished college. I took Dr. Correa almost 2 years ago now. This is the best professor I've ever studied with - by far. In fact, it's not even close. This is no easy A. That being said, I was motivated to exceed at the highest level, something I've never done before. I will carry the lessons learned in this class throughout my career.
Very bad attitude from Mr. Correa. Prepotence. Very difficult to deal with him.
Professor Correa runs a rigorous class, but if you engage with the material, you'll learn a lot. Using resources like unstuck study and the free textbook helped me succeed.
This is the worst professor to ever exist at MDC. DONT LISTEN TO THE GOOD REVIEWS, they come from this favorite students which he asked to write them for him. You will be mocked and humiliated in his class. It is quite literally a humiliation ritual. He is prepotent and arrogant. Stay away from his classes !!!!!
I've never met a more arrogant and narcissistic professor than this man. I wouldn't recommend his class to anyone, you could be absent for the first 30 minutes of class and still not miss a thing, since it won't have even started the lecture.
I highly recommend his class, despite his class is difficult, he invites you to learn and see the problems different. It might be a hard class because how he teaches, he isn't going to tell the answer and he might not do the same question he did in class for the test, but he makes sure that with the material reviewed you should know how to solve it
