Very average teacher.
Damn near put me off organic chemistry for ever and ever. The friends I had in theat class still cringe when his name is spoken. Hated the class and found his leather pants mock-worthy. But I gave him a 4 for clarity because I still read that text for fun
HELL NO STAY AWAY FROM THIS GUY! HORRIBLE HARD TO UNDERSTAND! KILLER TESTS!
Enjoyed his class but exams were difficult.
use slides of pictures of old chalkboard notes from textbook
dude, when you take pictures of your own chalkboards (illegible, mind you) and make them into lecture slides, something is not right in the brain. I thought the exams were harder than they should have been. Be very wary about taking chem from this guy.
Chalkboard projections were hard to read, he lectured moderately clearly, tests are very difficult - expect to leave quite a few test pages unanswered (esp. on the 2nd midterm). Not very approachable - makes you feel kinda dumb. His curve can hurt you!
Lecture notes come straight out of the textbook, which he wrote. Funny at times but not very approachable during his office hours due to his arrogance.

this mofo is always honking his own horn... "The IUPAC committee is very prestigious, which I had the honor of serving on." and his damn ferrari that I want to key every time I walk by it. and he takes pictures of his crappy chalk written notes.
Notes incomprehensible (takes pictures of chalkboards), lectures filled with IUPAC references, arrogant as all hell. Book he wrote is very clear, read that and go to SLC, don't bother attending lecture. But MUCH easier than Chem 3B.
Such an arrogant ****!! Stay away from his class!
he was a hard! his tests were hard. and he used slides (fall 03)of his ugly chalkboards he used in the past. though SOMETIMES entertaining. but i feel aslp in class too many times. AVOID him if you can.
I took his class 18 years ago. I changed my major to OChem, got a PhD, and still work in the field. He teaches to the top of the class, for sure. But if you're there, he's great.
This guy thinks he is some kind of euro ****. He is ridiculous and thinks too highly of himself. He needs to realize he is a **** teacher and an overall jacka$$.

took class awhile ago. his class is straight forward. notes are from his book, just highlight what he mentions in class. tests are just variations of past tests. fairly easy. other premeds are annoying.
Vollhardt is the man! this guy is freaking hilarious and super smart. loved his lecturing style and his textbook is great too.

had two classes with him so far and he doesn't seem so bad. in fact, i think he's funny and interesting. he plays soothing music in the morning, shows video clips, and i haven't fallen asleep yet. a good sign. lectures are straightforward and follow the textbook, which is well written and makes sense.
I took his class 10 years ago and absolutely loved it! It was at 8 am and I never once fell asleep or felt sleepy. In almost every other class I've had, I've nodded off, but not this one. He is very entertaining and made learning enjoyable. I looked fo
I failed this class.
A$$$$$$$$$HOLE
hard class beware!!
I haven't taken any midterms yet, but his classes are very thoroughly entertaining. I actually don't go to class (I'm too lazy to walk... hehe) but I always watch the lectures online and it's really easy for me to stay focused even though I'm at home.

I GOT 43% ON HIS FIRST TEST, IT'S HARD...
Very straightfoward and has a great lecturing style. The people who give negative comments don't know what they're talking about! I would definatly recommend this class.
Love the lectures! Very clear and organized. I definatly recommend this class! Sure the material is hard, but most undergrad sciences are.
While he did write the textbook, his class is very predictable. Everything that's on the tests is what is to be expected (from his book!). He puts on some hard chemistry, but better that than random tid-bits of information to trip you up. Practice with problems and you'll be able to tolerate this class! Power pt makes lecture so much better!
He's a nice guy and tries during lecture. His power point slides and his videos are nice. The 2nd midterm isn't the easiest thing ever but just do a lot book problems and you should be fine.
VERY HARD MIDTERMS!!!!!!!!!!!!
Funny guy and enjoyable in lecture. For tests, simply memorize old exams and do as many possible book problems and the class is a brezze. Beware, falling behind in this class is a horrible mistake, stay up to date and no worries!
excellent lectures. Tests very consistent with book (of course, since he wrote it) and old exams. don't be scared, if you work cansistently and study the book, you'll be fine.
DO NOT GET BEHIND! Keep up with the reading, do problems from the book, and go through his old exams. His lectures are very clear, and since he wrote the book, doing the book problems will help to prep you for the exams. His tests are very challenging, but you should be okay if you prepare properly.
nice but sucky
i remember i initially came into chem3a terrified from those comments ppl make about o chem but after taking it, it's not as bad as ppl claimed it to be. i'd hafta admit that it is time-consuming so don't procrastinate. do as many old problems as you can. practice is key!
you will never go or watch webcasts, you will get behind, and you will hate this class. AVOID.
this guy scares the s.h.i.t outta me....
I HIGHLY recommend going to SLC study groups. I thought I was a hot shot A student and didn't need them, but when the 2nd midterm rolls around--Trust me, you'll wish you would have gone. The tests are pretty hard, but no worries -- The class is curved and everyone will do just as badly as you will. Expect to get whatever grade you normally do.
hard!!
His tests are straightforward just like his old exams. The curve is usually in the spectroscopy. Everyone that says he isn't helpful doesn't go to his office hours. Be consistent and study everyday and you will do fine.
the hardest professor ever...this guy scares the sh.it out of me. i cant picture him driving a ferrari!
Lectures are ok. Tests are very predictable. He drives a farari and he's hot
His lectures are powerpoints straight out of the book, so lecture is only useful if you are a visual or audio learner (by the end of semester only about 30 people out of 600 show up for lecture, and the rest "webcast"). The tests are predictable in their difficulty, but he is true to his format, so study old tests!! He's also mean in office hours
Seems a lot harder than it is. As long as you don't get caught up with thinking how hard it is, and do all the practice tests, should be fine.
I hated this class. The lectures were boring and did not help at all. You might as well read the book. His tests are predictable but the spectroscopy qiestion on his tests is what determines your grade.
This class can be a b.tch and a lot of work, but I found that by attending lecture, reading, and doing lots of practice problems and exams, Vollhardt's exams were at least manageable. We did cover the whole textbook though, and he's the only professor to do that. Yeah, he's crazy.
Never went to a single lecture but still did well in the class. His exams are predictable based on previous tests. Not easy. But the kinds of problems are pretty much standard. Spectroscopy, except for the final, is hard; you either get it or you don't. The curves help you. Just need to do better than the mean and you'll at least pass the class.
I don't recommend Vollhardt at all... Professor Wagner is much much better.
got a 250 ->scrapping in the red drop top f150
Go to lecture, read the book, do all the problems in the book, and do the practice exams. It's a lot of work, but, if you do all that, you'll find his exams to be VERY EASY! His exams are fair and straight forward. Watch out for spectra questions, because they end up being bizarre rxns. Read ahead of time and go to lecture! Don't webcast!
Ok, so I do EVERYTHING that the person below me wrote: I read the textbook, goto lectures& pay attention and take notes, I do practice problems, I go to SLC for extra help, but I still failed the midterm. Vollhardt can be a good professor if you actually pay attention in lectures but he is incredibly hard. He should realize this is an INTRO class..
Vollhardt isn't as bad as people say he is. His exams are fair.
he's not THAT hard. just do practice problems, memorize the mechs, and you'll be able to pass. lectures can be boring though.
This guy was the biggest **** on the face of the planet. Extremely arrogant-avoid direct contact at all costs. However, the class was not that difficult...it just involved a TON of work. Don't get freaked out by the practice midterms from the 1990s....he has eased up considerably since then. He recycles old questions a lot!
Vollhardt is a good professor, but regardless of the professor, this is a class that requires a lot of studying outside of class. It's not difficult to understand at all, but if you're not going to study, then you're not going to get an A.
Vollhardt's course was a straightforward class. How can u be lost if he follows his book?Know the "vocab" of ochem and mechanisms and you'll at least pass the class.Lectures are boring/hard to follow if you don't read ahead. Making reaction keys & road maps are helpful. If you hear that he's hard, it's probably cuz the student didn't study enough.
Read the chapter, do the problems and then come to lecture. Only then will you fully comprehend all that he says. In all fairness, he is a good professor. Class just needs a lot of work. Never give up, even if you feel like quitting. Just do your best and know that most people feel exactly like you do.
The key to success in his class is to do every single practice problem you can get yours hands on; I agree that you can pass without ever attending lecture but that's because his slides are really clear and detailed. so word of the wise, study the slides!
He is terrifying but his tests are fair. Just do lots of practice problems and all of the practice midterms and you'll be fine. The old practice midterms aren't very important, focus on the ones with the new format.
Do the problems in the book and most recent midterms. They are the MOST helpful in prepping for exams. Midterms and final were straight-forward. Nothing terribly tricky. Lectures were rather boring. Straight from the book (after all he wrote the book). Take advantage of all electronic resources and study hard.
Great Professor! I loved the class. I used the book all of the time. The tests are fair and exactly like his old exams.
Lectures were not that exciting. However, this class does require a lot more work compared to chem 3a. The second midterm was extremely hard and included so many new reactions. Final had a few questions straight from practice exams.
Worst OChem professor at Berkeley. He teaches by PowerPoint slides. You CANNOT teach Organic Chemistry with slides, you have to write out the mechanisms. Lectures are excruciating and each slide seems to be completely unrelated to the one before. Take Pedersen - he writes all mechanisms out and his lectures build on each other and flow nicely.
HE'S HARD! He wrote the book, of course he thinks everything is important! Look at previous midterms/finals when studying for exams the layouts and contexts are usually the same. Yeah, but he's hard! And he uses powerpoint ... Arrogant in office hours.. He also drives a freakin ferrari
Vollhardt teaches with powerpoint slides, which may not be as helpful as writing on the board. However, his midterms are straightforward. The second midterm was the hardest- it covers many many mechanisms. The final had a page of problems that were the same as the ones on the practice exams he posted online. Good luck!
Pretty easy professor. The only reason I think people may do badly is because of his 60-point NMR questions. As long as you know your NMR, and have done his previous practice tests, the class is pretty chill. Vollhardt knows his stuff, but is very bad at teaching it. His book is essential if you want an A. So, READ IT!
This guy was the biggest **** on the face of the earth. Tests were not too bad...just know your NMR! Also, he teaches OChem with powerpoint slides...probably the least effective teaching method I have ever experienced. Like someone said before, you CAN'T teach Ochem with slides. His lecture is the book so don't worry about going to every class.
It's funny how people get excited when they hear they're going to be taking a class with the person who wrote the textbook. My recommendation - if Vollhardt is teaching, take OChem another year. Trust me on that one. Pederson is your friend. He doesn't make OChem any easier, but he makes it a LOT clearer.
Will not be able to explain material or hold your interest. Lecture is not rewarding. He blasts his old music really loudly. His tests are fair in that he doesn't test you on random information, but they are hard.
His accent isn't that bad, and he talks loudly enough to be clear. But teaching organic chemistry with powerpoint slides is useless and his lectures are literally copies of his book. Tests are insane, but if you know your NMR and mass spec, its ok. I guess.
His lectures are pretty much useless. Read the book FASHO.
His lectures helped in the sense that it tells you what is and is not on the midterm/final. I highly recommend doing problems in the book and working the mechanisms on a chalkboard. Tests were not hard, but you need to study to do well. Do the most previous tests to prepare.
Vollhardt uses his own book so the lectures come straight from the book. If you go to lecture, you don't need the book. To do well in the class, you need to know ALL the rxns and most mechanisms, this makes up almost 50% of the exam. The other portion requires you to know NMR, IR,etc, synthesis, nomenclature, and some random MC questions.
He is very lazy and gives you a pack of his old midterms/finals. The tests he gives are very similar to the ones he gives you. It is better to just go through and know all the material in the slides rather than go through the book. Tests only on material in his slides.
Volhardt is really not a good teacher. The class is such that you basically have to teach yourself. He makes no attempt to relate to students or make sure they learn the material.
Vollhardt's class really isn't that bad, and he seems like a decent guy. He occasionally made a good joke in class. The lectures are not amazing, but not terrible either, and they compliment the book nicely. Study his old exams, memorize the reactions, and make sure you know your NMR and Mass spec.
Prof. Vollhardt is a cool, knowledgeable guy. However, he puts almost no effort in his lectures. To get an A, go to lecture to know what will be on the tests. READ THE BOOK and understand it. Do all the problem sets and the most recent practice exams. He wrote the book so many of the test questions are very similar to the problem set questions.
Lectures could've been a little more engaging, but Vollhardt isn't as terrible as most ppl make him out to be. He definitely will make you WORK for your grade. You have to work your ass off to earn that A. Key to his class=SAMPLE EXAMS. They will become your best friends. Don't be scared to take him!!!
Prof Vollhardt is a great teacher. His lectures focus on the most important aspects of his book and thus ochem itself. His OH are excellent b/c he is very willing to help and he is a very personable person. His tests are easier now than in the past. to get an A- know the important reactions and do PRAC tests. Give him a chance- you wont regret it.
Vollhardt definitely isn't as bad as people make him out to be. In order to succeed in this class, just go to lecture and pay attention, READ the book, and do tons of practice problems. Since he wrote the book, you know exactly what you need to learn for the tests. His more recent practice tests are almost exactly like the exams he gives.
Personally hated this class. I loved taking Chem 3A with Peterson, and taking this class was like a slap in the face. The lectures are taken straight out of the book, and the tests were pretty hard. Boring as hell.
Professor Vollhardt is definitely no where near as bad as his reputation. His lectures can be a bit hard to follow, but he is very helpful and approachable in office hours. To do well in this class, read the textbook to understand concepts from lecture and do as many practice problems as possible. Tests are challenging, but fair.
webcast is great!
Lectures are very hard to follow for me. The first midterm was fair. Not as bad as people make him to be. He is just really hard to follow because he gets really into his stuff. Everything is straight from the book. Sleep and eat and do everything with that book of his. It is gold.
He is totally incomprehensible. Totally old-fashioned. Reminds me of a drill sargeant.
Easy A if you do book problems and go to lecture. Everyone saying that he is hard to understand probably didn't touch the book. If you read the chapter (even a slight skim) before coming to lecture, what he says makes CRYSTAL clear sense and is actually really interesting. Don't slack off or you will fail. Seriously. It's really not that big a deal
I hate organic chemistry and I wouldn't have taken this professor at all, but I absolutely needed to so I could graduate on time. He teaches off a PowerPoint, webcasts his lectures, and bases things heavily on the textbook, of which he is an author. You can survive if you do practically all of the book problems and attend the GSI-run weekly review.
so i went to all of his lectures and in the beginning i thought he went too fast and wasn't very good. however later in the semester, he's not that bad at teaching if you really try and pay attention in lecture. although i don't think ochem should be taught on powerpoint, his powerpoints are a useful review tool and his tests are straight forward.
Most people hate on Vollhardt because 3b is a challenging class to begin with. But if you go to lecture and review the book, his tests are extremely straight forward. He releases a lot of practice midterms, which helps too. In the end, Vollhardt does care about his students and, even with such large classes, makes an effort to answer questions
he's good. tests are straightforward. refer to the book and take his practive mt's.
Chem 3B is definitely one of the harder courses at Berkeley. However, Vollhardt really tries to encourage students to learn. He's hilarious and really, really loves chemistry. Tests are not easy, but manageable if you study (would recommend a study group).
Straight forward, take practice tests and read the book
I really enjoyed Vollhardt. Although his lectures can be confusing and he uses powerpointsgoes quickly, he is extremely knowledgable and impressive as a chemist. His stories are hilarious, and seems to genuinely care. Tests are pretty challenging, but if you take practice tests, you should be OK. I had to do a lot of practice outside class.
Since he wrote the textbook, he pulls all powerpoint images and bullets straight from the book. That being said, if you read the book, understand concepts, and then do hws and practice exams before the tests, you'll be fine. His tests are VERY similar to practice exams, so do as many as you can! Memorize reagents & rxns THOROUGHLY!
Excellent professor who teaches in a very advanced style. Re-watch lectures and do the practice exams several times each and you will have no problem getting an A.
Vollhardt is a pretty great lecturer, he is very clear but also goes pretty fast so be ready to rewatch the lectures and read the book. The tests are pretty hard though so be ready to ride the curve
Great Teacher, go to his office hours, and study his past exams. Overall, he gives hard test but very predictable.
Vollhardt is really funny and engaging during lectures although the material can be difficult to follow. First midterm is easy and straightforward, second is hard, and the final is difficult but fair. He gives out all his old exams which are the same format of his tests so they are good to study from. He wrote the textbook so it can be helpful.
He is very knowledgeable (he wrote his own OChem textbook and he's been teaching chem since at least 1995.) He says exactly what mechanisms won't be tested in lecture and he posts all of his old exams. There are no tricks on his exams. He tests lecture material only and not details from the text (I never even bought read the text.) Fantastic!
I absolutely adored Prof. Vollhardt. Sure, the material he went over was hard and could be boring at times, but if you worked really hard and read the textbook (which he wrote) and do the problem sets, everything will be fine. Plus, he throws in all those jokes unexpectedly which makes class more exciting. 1 St. Dev above all tests is an A.
Overall solid. Teaching is good but not amazing. Great jokes. Webcasts lectures. Pretty much teaches off PowerPoint which itself is based off textbook. Watching the lectures is like listening to an audiobook of the text. LOTS of old exams make it clear what you need to know, tests predictable. Subject is hard, teacher is not. Better pass the tests.
Textbook isn't mandatory although it does help a lot in supplementing the lectures. Funny professor and an ok lecturer. If you have the opportunity, wait for Marsden to take OChem.
He will give you a layout of what you need to do in order to do well in his class. Follow it and you'll be golden
Professor Vollhardt is very funny during his lectures and he sometimes give some practice problems on the board. Those questions usually include main points he would test in the exam. He provides bunch of past exams which is very good since the test formats are very similar.:) Textbook is also important because it supplements the lecture.
Ochem is killer and he doesn't make it easier. He told us that sometimes you're just bad at something and you should drop out of the class if that's you (drop deadline had passed already). That definitely didn't encourage me. You risk doing badly even if you study for hours and hours. Lectures are boring and tests are hard. It's all memorization!
I love Vollhardt. He totally changed how I feel about chemistry--turning it from a dreaded subject into something manageable and fun. Lectures are webcast and he posts dozens of practice exams and recommended practice problems. I got an A, just read the book, watch lectures and put in some work! He's also hilarious and inspiring.
love his music difficulty level of exams is consistent.
Chem 3A with Vollhardt was by far the hardest class I have ever taken. The second midterm was nearly impossible and the class average was under 50%. While the curve is rather generous, the material is incredibly difficult and Vollhardt's lectures are fast-paced and hard to understand.
If you attend SLC lectures and self study with Sapling practice problems(do ALL of them), you should be good. His lectures can used to clarify concepts, but don't rely on them.
I personally really liked Prof Vollhardt. You should go to lectures so that you won't fall behind. He explained things very well, but a bit fast but you can always review at home. I LOVE HIS TESTS. They were very very fair, no surprises. Study his old exams! SLC study group was amazing as well (Jeff was the best!).
He's the hardest class I've ever taken and it's really annoying to have had to buy HIS book for ochem series. I definitely recommend waiting a semester for marsden or especially pedersen
Exams are fair but he gives no partial credit. He curves the class well, but is a TERRIBLE teacher. One of the worst I've ever had. He can't explain o chem to save his life and the textbook he wrote is just as bad. Expect to learn everything on your own or online.
Vollhardt made learning organic chemistry (an already difficult class) harder than it needed to be. He made us buy his textbook and molecular model kit bundle which was completely unnecessary and expensive... Everything I learned was in study group or Khan Academy/online, and this was the first class I have really struggled in at Berkeley
The types of questions in his workbook are nothing like you will get on the exams. You are better off practicing his past exams since he loves to repeat questions by slightly altering them. Got a 78% on exam 1 and a 55% on both exam 2 and final which translated to a B. Didn't go to any lecture after exam 1. All I did was study 1 week before tests.
You HAVE to attend lecture and really understand what you're doing to do well in the class. Go over his power point slides over and over again until it is stamped into your brain. I really enjoyed 3A with Vollhardt, and I actually recommend people to take it with him. Tests are hard, but if you actually put honest effort in, you will do well.
He goes into more detail than other professors so you learn a lot more in his class. I personally only went to a handful of lectures, but for the ones I did attend, I found them very interesting. He also webcasts his lectures if you happen to miss them. I found that the study groups hosted by the SLC were what really helped me to get the A.
Previous exams are SUPER representative of the test. I just did every single past practice exam, reviewed them until I understood literally everything on there, and the exams were basically those. The PPT lectures are pulled straight from his textbook--study the details he mentioned in lecture REALLY well and you'll be fine.
I have such fond memories of Vollhardt. The material was difficult but fair, and attending OH and SLC sessions truly helped. Get him to talk about his childhood and his hair.
Had him in Spring 17. He's a funny guy but after a few lectures I stopped going because he's not a good teacher. I don't think OChem can be taught through powerpoint, you need to write on the board to see arrow pushing. I read the book and his slides, did every practice problem and practice test and was fine. Use khan acad, AK lecs, etc when needed
I enjoyed lectures moreso because of Prof. Vollhardt's humor than the actual course content. Lectures were often empty and those who skipped often struggled. Vollhardt gives you everything you need to succeed with flying colors. I followed his study advice and did really well in the course. Review the life out of previous exams and you'll succeed!
Stopped going to lecture after week 1 b/c I kept falling asleep - he uses PowerPoints so it's SUPER boring. Like he makes sense if you listen hard, but his voice is so mind numbing that it just doesn't make sense anymore.. Instead I got tutoring, where all I did was work through past exams. That's all you need to do well; no need for a textbook.
I went to all of the lectures up to halfway after midterm 1 when I realized it really wasn't helping because I kept falling asleep and he was going pretty fast. After midterm 1 I only read the book and took notes which worked for me. I would take him again because he put all of his tests online so as long as you do all of them it should be fine.
I do not recommend taking Chem 3A with Professor Vollhardt. He makes ochem more difficult than necessary with confusing powerpoint slides and dry lectures. Plus, he makes you use an online platform that costs $100 to take mandatory quizzes that count towards your grade. Worst class I've taken at Cal.
Let me tell you, He's so funny and smart. However, he basically teaches straight from the textbook with no additional explanation. This class would not prepare you for OChem 3b with another professor. Barely slid through the class because the midterms were ridiculous. This class is the reason why I switched majors.
he's alright
He is by far the worst teacher I have ever had. He is one of the only professors who did not change the date of our midterm during this quarantine. The average of all of our midterms are in the 50s, which is ridiculous. His lectures are of no use to the class, and theres very little that can help you study for the exams. Do NOT take this class.
I struggled with this class quite a bit because I had to self-teach myself using the textbook since his lectures were not particularly helpful (just a regurgitation of the textbook). I recommend going to the GSIs for help and doing the end-of-chapter questions.
This class is tough because there is a lot of content to get through. He wrote the textbook, so lectures are straight from the book. He gives you a whole bunch of practice exams and they are very consistent from year to year
Tough course material but what do you expect, it's ochem. Exams are tough but he gives you all his past exams so there's no bs. Just get at least 1 std above the mean on all his exams and you're guaranteed an A basically.
lots of memorization
Worst professor in my 4 years at Cal. Hated this class. Vollhardt is a horrible teacher. His lecture slides are red/yellow comic sans on a blue background. Everything you learn will be on your own. Requires you to buy the $300 textbook that HE wrote. His tests are incredibly unforgiving. Do not take him if you have the choice. You've been warned.
Vollhardt is great. He jokes around and is the cool professor who tells us to enjoy college life outside of his class. He can be a harsh grader but his test are definitely doable. The tests' format don't really change year to year so you are set for an A if you are diligent, reading textbook and drilling practice tests.
Professor Vollhardt is a great professor! Hes hilarious, wise, very inspirational (full of stories)! He loves his field of study so lectures are always a blast, and cares about his students lives/success outside of academia. Exams are challenging but not impossible if you do his practice problem sets and use his materials necessary to succeed
He's funny & has a clear passion. Lectures agreeably fulfill their purpose - providing requisite tools (that you have to practice applying on your own) along with chemical insight to understand & remember them. Pace yourself with work & really think through each step. Memorization may help to a limited degree but understanding far outweighs.
Vollhardt is a very entertaining lecturer and very clearly knowledgeable about ochem. He releases about 600 pages worth of practice exams which are helpful and all you need to succeed in the class other than watching lectures / taking notes. Course staff are also great. This class requires a lot of studying but is very rewarding.
I am a bit disappointed that he simply re-uploaded course captures for this online semester. His lecture slides are still great though; I didn't have to use the textbook at all. Exams are tough, but he gives a lot of practice exams that are similar. The grading was very unclear, but it worked out. However, overall, he's a living legend.
Vollhardt has taught this exact class since the 90's. Definitely do past exams as practice. The style of questions is extremely consistent. His lecture's are charming and he has an interesting sense of humor. Your grade is pretty much the exam scores; the quizzes are easy. He loves selling his textbook and basing questions off of material from it.
Honestly a pretty good professor! He's clear about important stuff like grading criteria and what's going to be on the exams (in fact, he gives us all previous exams and the exams are fairly similar). Lectures aren't bad either. He wrote the textbook so make sure to use it since lots of the exam/lecture is based on it
Worst professor I have ever had the displeasure of having. If you are a premedical student and/or care about your Chemistry grade, AVOID AT ALL COSTS. TLDR: Uploades blurry, incoherent lectures and provides little assistance in the way of practice.
just awful, very unhelpful. Everything you learn will be through YouTube because the man cannot teach. Very test heavy, grade based only on midterms and final
Although the course is tough, his lectures are very informative and gives you a broad overview of the concepts. The textbook he wrote is actually really helpful. Exams are reasonable, he releases all the old exams so I suggest doing them beforehand since they are similar each year. Overall, great professor. Also, very helpful during office hours.
He's funny and charming in his own way but I found his lectures difficult to grasp. Of course this is partially the nature of OChem but I do feel as though sometimes he assumes we know things and doesn't elaborate. He also only uses videos of his 2019 lectures, which is kinda weird. Definitely use the textbook and watch YT videos...
BEWARE of this class. I took it asynchronously and it was very challenging for me. The GSIs probably taught the entire class for the professor since all of his lectures were from 2018 and uploaded to bcourses. Very test-heavy and a lot of the content is really hard to understand since he does not teach it very well.
Please do yourselves a favor and don't take this class. You will regret it. the professor did not even lecture one time. the entire class consists of 2019 recordings.
Professor Vollhardt uploads lectures from spring 2019 each week and collects his check. While this is a major downside, Peter is a charming and engaging lecturer (On 1.5x) and is very passionate about what he teaches. Content is difficult, but if you spend time to understand the content on the practice exams, you will do well.
He's a hilarious lecturer. HOWEVER, he failed to actually lecture live, ever, during the whole semester. Incredibly frustrating and I self-studied the whole semester. Head GSI carried the class. Only good part of this class was that he provides tons of previous exams.
Prof. Vollhardt is funny but this class was really difficult. Our grades consisted only of weekly quizzes, two midterms, and the final. His "lectures" were 2019 YouTube video lectures and he only addressed us in emails regarding the midterms/finals. The head GSI was more like the professor for this course.
Ochem is already difficult in itself, and vollhardt did not make this any better. He did not lecture at all and was never there for the students. There were no discussion sections to help with the material. The head GSI had to take on all the work. He made me hate chemistry. Please don't take this class.
please DO NOT TAKE VOLLHARDT. his lectures are boring and recorded from 2 years ago and the format of the lecture slides is bright/neon comic sans. the format of his slides is horrible. he tries to cram way too much information in too little time. the tests are 20+ pages and absolutely useless for actually learning/understanding chem. he sucks.
His lectures were incredibly fast paced and boring. They were all online too. Office hours were almost always full. The entire course was very disorganized and had no discussion sections to help you with the material. would not recommend.
Lol he was so bad. Avoid him at all costs. Lectures often didn't correlate to how hard exams were, and his textbook was no help at all. There are better O Chem profs out there.
Professor Vollhardt is selling his own book to all his students. I never used the books, this is a waste of your money. Attending the lectures is enough to do well in his class. The lectures are good to follow if you follow them online and can press pause whenever you get lost. His exams are the same format as the practice tests.
One of the worst semesters of my entire life - he used lectures from 2019 to "teach" (and even those lectures were utterly useless), and the way his lectures and his quizzes would test on completely different things, and the exams were more difficult than curing cancer was insane. For a class like this, the grade bins should've been lower.
Professor Vollhardt was an amazing professor. He was always extremely clear on what he expected from his students. He wrote the textbook he uses for 3A, so there is no ambiguity in what information is required for the class. His previous exams were available to his students, and the exams he gave out were virtually identical. Great prof overall.
Vollhardt claims in the opening lecture that you will not have to spend longer than an hour a day studying for this class, there has never been a claim more false. The management of this class and support is entirely done by the head GSI, who I hold in the highest honor. Having in-person live lectures or ANY discussion sections would help immensely
Avoid Vollhardt if he ever "teaches" Chem 3A again because it will affect you detrimentally for other courses. I took him in Spring 2022, and I would say I did not retain any information nor really learn anything from his 2019 prerecorded lectures. I spent most of the time self-studying from Organic Chemistry Tutor to understand the material.
Lectures were from years ago, and made the exams near twenty pages long.
The lectures were hit-or-miss, but with Unstuck study and the free textbook, I was able to stay on top of the material. The exams were a challenge, but doable with diligent preparation.
