Dr. Sata is such a respectable professor. He really knows what he's doing. The tough part was following the material especially if you are not familiar with bio. Spend time reading the course guide and go over the squarecap. He's good about answering questions through squarecap so ask anything in class through there. Overall great class and prof.
Solid professor. Buy and study the workbook, the in class questions, and lab assignments.
Sata is a super great guy who really cares whether or not you learn the material. His lectures were a little overwhelming at first for me (because I didn't take AP Bio), but I was making A's by the second and third exam. He is so sweet and wants to help you as much as he can. Just study, pay attention, and at least skim the chapters before lecture.
I LOVE Dr. Sata! His class was pretty fun, and he is such a sweet old man. He truly cares about his students, and there are extra credit opportunities that will help boost your grade on top of the group project that's supposed to do the same! TAKE him! Tests are easy as long as you study, and the squarecap and homework questions always help!
His class was pretty fun, and he is so so sweet. He truly cares about his students, and there are extra credit opportunities that will help boost your grade on top of the group project that's supposed to do the same! Discussion "quizzes" are completion grades Tests are easy as long as you study, and the squarecap and homework questions always help!
Great professor, if I actually studied and gone over the material I would have an A in the class. He gives out a lot of participation points so it's really hard to fail his class.
Dr. Sata is a sweet man who cares a lot about his students. His class is straight forward and its possible to do well if you study. His course is based off the textbook he wrote, all the info for the tests is in it. He's lectures can be slow, but he gives your practice questions and quizzes in class for participation grades that help on test.
Dr. Sata always made us laugh. You will learn SO MUCH in this class! You will find the material mixing into BIO311D, Chemistry courses, and Genetics! Just make sure you know the textbook in and out, you have to really work and you can get that A. The best intro biology professor I could've had, so thankful for him.
KING SATA. His lectures are amazing, his handwriting is calligraphy, and his diagrams should be in the Blanton. 3 exams + a final, lowest one is replaced with the avg of the 3 or final, whichever is higher. You read out of a textbook he wrote, which simplifies everything to what you need to know. He also bumps everyone up a letter grade at the end.
By far my favorite professor of the semester. He really cares about his students and wants you to succeed. He provides you with everything you need to do well and makes his expectations very clear. This class is an easy A, but you will still leave having learned so much.
Considering I never took a single bio class in high school despite at least 85% of the people around me having took AP bio, this class was easy. He has a course guide that follows the lectures exactly and posts lecture notes online so you gucci if you don't write down everything he does (pls don't write down everything he does my hand hurts still).
Class is easy for non biology neophytes. Lectures a bit quickly, easy to understand, the way to succeed is to read and understand his course guide and review squarecap questions. AP Bio helps, as a lot of his material are those concepts but more in depth. Might not be easy to make perfect 100s on tests but extra credit covers it. Solid choice.
One of my favorite professors to date. An amazing teacher who knows the material like the back of his hand. He gives a schedule of the semester in the syllabus, so the curriculum easy to follow. A lot of material, but if you study the book and lectures you will do well. He really cares about giving his students the best chance to succeed.
Honestly the best prof! Easy A but you learn a lot! He cares a lot about his students and wants everyone to understand the material fully. That said, his tests are VERY doable even the final. But the class is not test heavy which was a huge relief and much is completion Study for tests w/ Square cap, wrkshts, discussion "quizzes", & practice tests.
His lectures are clear and engaging. His tests have questions from Squarecap, Discussion Section Quizzes, and worksheets. Go to his office hours if you need help, he is really nice about it. Also, attendance is not mandatory but he gives extra points in the end if you have good attendance. Plus, he explains squarecap in class so just go for that.
Sata is great. He teaches you how to not only learn, but to apply knowledge. As someone who never took AP Bio, this class was pretty challenging, but once you understand his teaching style, getting an A is manageable. Just put in the effort, READ the course guide, go to office hours, and study SquareCap questions (they're almost always on exams).
Dr. Sata is very nice and a good teacher IF you pay attention. I recommend reading the chapters and taking notes on them before going to the lectures. His tests are relatively hard but the final is super hard. You're going to have to study hard for his tests, especially if biology isn't your strong suit. He curves at the end of the semester.
Hes great. Realize that the midterms are taken mostly from the in-class questions (word for word), and that his textbook contains all the information you need. Hes really nice to all of the students and has good lectures, but you dont need to listen to the lectures to succeed, just read the textbook. Theres one group project that is eh but easy
I had no AP Bio background, but Sata lays down a good foundation of biology. Go to office hours! He's willing to sit down and answer any questions you have. His midterms have both multiple choice and free response questions, and I found the best way to study was to go over Squarecap questions, Discussion Section worksheets, and sample exams.
This class requires putting in a lot of own time reading. But Sata also tests the way he lectures, so pay attention and study lectures. He's so willing to help during office hours but my biggest tool to studying for tests was talking to my TA's! His TA's were all so helpful and great!
Dr. Sata is a professor who truly wants his students to learn. If you put in the work, you can get an A on exams, there is extra credit that boosts your final grade. His textbook is a wonderful source. Easy to read and straight forward. He is also a great person, very funny and sweet. One of the best professors at UT and incredibly knowledgable.
Sata is an an interesting professor. He doesnt have powerpoints or uses tech, he goes old school and writes his notes out(making lectures a little boring). However he is very nice and respectable, and has the greatest dressing sense! You need to buy his textbook for the class, but make sure you study his squarecap questions for the exams!
dont take this class. sata is very closeminded. you wont learn anything if you have no biology background. dont listen to the other comments, theyre just smart. if you know youre not an academically excelling student, beware. he expects you to understand his textbook and he legit told us to self teach and "google"
Dr. Sata was great! He presented the information clearly and gave us a test review before each exam that essentially showed us exactly what material would be on it. You can tell he wants us to really understand the material, so his tests can be a bit tricky if biology doesn't come naturally. (I have always been terrible at bio until Dr. Sata)
Dr. Sata is an amazing professor. His lectures are driven by notes, of which HE WRITES HIMSELF during class, meaning no powerpoints & that you can write the notes alongside him as you are in lecture. His tests are extremely fair and quite easy if you use his course guide book seriously. Do the homeworks and take good notes; this class is an easy A
She doesn't do anything in class except write notes from the textbook and copy them onto the board. She gives no solutions to the practice problems she posts so there is literally no way to know whether you are doing something correctly. She gives lousy excuses if you ask her and does not help you in the slightest.
I loved Dr. Sata. The class is easy, but you end up learning a lot. He appeals to all learning styles, so all you really need to do is pay attention in lecture. He really cares about biology and his student. One of my favorite professors so far!
Although he is sometimes hard to understand, he makes up for it in his grades. As long as you do the worksheets and discussion sessions you should get a decent grade in his class.
Dr. Sata is such a genuine professor who clearly has a passion for biology, evident in his teaching style and enthusiasm. Attendance is mandatory (you do squarecap every lecture day). Exams are alright but still push you to learn the material thoroughly. Everything else (worksheets/discussion quizzes) are graded on completion.
TBH: Great professor. The first two exams were challenging for me just to really catch on to the timing and the detail of the materials. Attendance is mandatory for square cap and most discussions. Loved the class he was always so welcoming to help when you needed it. Theres a lot of reading and work, but is totally worth it for understanding.
He's a funny and great professor. Get good at writing fast but don't be afraid to ask him to backtrack a bit if he slides up his notes too far (or just look at it when he posts it online). Attend lecture so you actually understand the material. Exams are challenging but doable, just make sure you don't waste time because 50 minutes is all you get.
His tests are way too in depth for what he covers in class. I personally read both textbooks multiple times and did practice tests before each test to no avail. He expects us to know at a deeper level but will not teach or even cover that in class or in textbook. Also he hand writes lecture notes and has bad handwriting that can make bad notes.
TAKE SATA FOR BIO311C. This class was honestly a breeze, especially if you have a decent AP Bio background. HIs notes are handwritten on a document camera and posted online right after class. If your squarecap questions are least 80% accurate its a 100. DSQ assignments and wrkshts were useless but show up on test. MC ON TEST IS VERY EASY.
Sata is an incredibly nice person and will do whatever he can to help you understand biology and succeed in this class. He provides lots of materials to study with, though using all of them is not necessary. His tests are straightforward, but a little bit of a time crunch. Though he goes in-depth, he ends up only testing on the key takeaways.
He is a pretty good choice for a bio professor, but make sure to take this class seriously even though he drops so many assignments. I'm pretty sure I failed the final but that was my own fault. Everything besides the exams are pretty much graded by completion but the final is cumulative. Tests are a little difficult but he gives a lot of practice.
LOVE HIM! He's one of my favorite professors. He writes the notes as he teaches and I find that extremely helpful. I never found the discussions helpful though. Study his lecture notes and go over the squarecap questions! The group project was def an easy 100. Love his class and I really enjoyed the subject.
I LOVE SATA. Probably one of the best bio prof on campus. He truly wants you to learn the material instead of memorizing facts. His exams are pretty straight forward. He tells you what you need to know via squarecap/lectures/practice exams. He loves bio so he may get excited and go a lil too fast. Takes a long time for TA to input grades tho
Sata is so caring and Im glad he was my prof. Tests can be kinda tricky but the other assignments are mainly completion grade. He posts all of his notes for each lecture too. Make sure to study squarecap for tests. Theres also a group project thats tedious but it isnt difficult to get done.
He's so helpful and always willing to explain concepts during his office hours! He's very nice, and his class is clearly structured. The TA's and PLA's are all really helpful and easy to access as well!! Loved his class!
Dr. Sata might be one of the nicest professors out there. He knows his class is tough, that's why he gives a lot of help & extra credit. He wants you to learn and see the big picture of the materials. He's also quite funny & laid back. There's a lot of HW, but as long as you attempt to do it, you are good.
Dr. Sata is the sweetest man and you can tell he wants his students to be the best they can be. His tests have repeat questions from previous semesters and squarecap questions, but the final is killer. He lectures at a very fast pace and does all hand written notes. His office hours were limited, but he is very receptive to questions.
If you pay attention during lecture, study the course guide and study the squarecap you are set for this class. Dr. Satha is super nice and funny. His exams are pretty straightforward.
He is very sweet, but if you want to pass, you have to study, and put in the work. He has lots of materials you can use to review, and if you put in the time, and can understand the review material, then you should make an A.
He lectures for about 25 minutes per class, and the rest of class time is dedicated to Squarecap, so make sure you come to class. I never listened or took notes during the lecture. Hearing someone talk at me isn't really helpful, but I took diligent notes at home about the week leading up to the test, which worked well.
Dr. Sata is the best professor ever. His lecture style is him writing notes on a piece of paper while it is projected onto a screen for everyone to see while going in dept and explaining verbally. All notes are posted online afterward for anyone to review. He provides a lot of study materials before a test too!
Dr. Sata is the BEST biology teacher to take for BIO 311C. It breaks my heart that I won't be able to take him again. He cares for his students and he wants them to succeed. The only critique I have is that he writes faster than he talks, so it can be hard to keep up with him in lectures. Overall, his tests are fair/straightforward.
His TA's did not do a very good job at grading on time and were not very helpful when going to their office hours. Make sure you go to class to get credit for square cap and study those before every test because they will come out! His final is hard so make sure you give yourself time to prepare for that and memorize the discussions for the FR!
Dr. Sata is a well respected professor and really lives up to the hype. His teaching style may not be for everyone but you really don't need to pay attention to his lectures in class to do well, you just have to do all of the reading before the test, do his sample exams, take notes over his lecture notes, and take advantage of all of his resources.
Sata is so intelligent and a kind soul. Try really hard in this class - actually read, pay attention, and understand your Squarecaps and weekly discussions. Your final grade will probably be higher than youd expect because hes so nice and will average your grades in a way that favors you. What a king.
Dr. Sata's class was one of my favorites this semester. I feel like he provided a great environment for first years to learn and provided numerous resources to succeed in his class. If you just show up every day and do the work, it's really not a hard class to do well in. He's also super caring and lovely, and if you ever get the chance to chat, do
Dr. Sata was a great professor! Really try to attend all discussions and lectures as they'll help you for all exams. Most of the exams have Squarecap and Discussion section questions so really put emphasis on those. He also is super kind and tries to keep the lectures entertaining. You really learn a lot from this class. Highly recommend!!
99; overall very good; show up to lecture bc squarecap; he uploads notes so u don't have to pay attention; doesn't upload lectures tho; just read his txtbook ignore openstax; makes practice exams (even for final!); DO the practice exams; review squarecap bc tests will recycle/reword those questions; very generous on grades; only 1 group project
I have never met someone so passionate and understanding professor compared to him. He really cares about his students and is willing to go out his way to pass his class.
Dr. Sata is a very nice professor. The content of his class is pretty difficult, but definitely manageable if you work for it. It's very important to study every day.
Dr. Sata is the BEST bio professor ever. Period. Going to class and learning from him is so fun, and he really cares about his students. He writes his own textbook! He also hands out sample exams to study with, and most of the questions are just like the real exam. Your TA is either a hit or miss, but you can always count on Dr. Sata to help you.
Dr. Sata is probably one of the most caring professors I've ever had. He is very invested in the success of his students and is always looking for ways to improve his assignments. Moreover, he is very knowledgable in what he teaches, and teaches in a style in which he covers all the small details of the big picture. Great choice for BIO311C
Excellent professor!
Dr. Sata truly cares about your success. His lectures were boring imo, but very informative. Tests are not too bad, but it sucks he requires the textbook for online homework. However, the test questions are mainly from book. The FRQs on tests were the hardest part, and I found them unnecessary. Discussion Sections suck took. Overall good professor
I wouldn't understand anything if I didn't put in extra work for topic. Make notes in his textbook and read the OpenStax textbook before class to better understand the ideas. During lecture, ONLY TAKE NOTES IF YOU FIND SOMETHING INTERESTING. Just sit and watch his lectures. Then afterwards, do Khan Academy modules over the prior week's topic.
his textbook is the backbone of his exams. if you do the practice exams, squarecap questions, and homework's you will pass. you will end up learning so much in this class. Dr. Sata really wants you to push your limits to become passionate about learning. He even recommends books and documentaries. Don't be afraid of taking intro to bio lol.
He is really sweet. Honestly, BIO is just a lot of memorization and he does his best during lectures. He kinda draws things out and does not explain everything super clear but he has some amazing TAs. Discussion sections really helped understand the material better since the TAs are good. He cares and is super understanding and helps your grade!
Don't really get the hype. His lectures were incredibly dense and hard to follow, and I ended up teaching myself all the material by just reading the textbook. The extra resources he gives are helpful, and he absolutely expects you to use them. He's pretty condescending when people ask questions, especially when you ask him to repeat
You either love the way he teaches or you don't. He uses Squarecap to take attendance and you can miss some because he will drop it. Go over the discussion assignments and Squarecap because most will be on his tests. Don't be afraid to approach him because he is glad to help you. He does NOT curve all the time so don't hope that he will at the end.
I don't understand why Sata is rated so well. I basically had to teach myself everything. Discussion section is pointless as well. He claimed he would give a curve at the end of the semester and yet no curve was given. He couldn't figure out an easy way to take exams after everhthing went online and then made the tests more difficult on purpose.
Dr. Sata is great if you're a premed, otherwise avoid at all cost. His whole class he orients around the MCAT which was extremely pointless and just stresssful for me. The exams are doable as long as you keep up with the reading. A lot of your understanding depends on who you get as a TA but he does give a good curve at the end of the term.
Dr Sata is probably one of the best Bio teachers at UT. You can see he really cares for the success of his students and is very understanding, this was shown during the covid pandemic. The tests were fair and attendance was mandatory via squarecap. I would highly recommend him.
A lot of people like him but his lecture style just doesn't sit well with me. I took AP Bio and usually get As in classes but this one was my first B+. He has an accent so non-native English speakers beware. Reading the textbook and taking detailed notes was apparently not enough. Boring lectures, unhelpful discussion. Big curve for final grade tho.
He truly cares for his students and not only wants everyone to succeed in the class, but to also truly learn. He provides homeworks and practice test and help a lot with studying for exams. Go to class, read, listen, do your best and there will be no reason to not receive an A!
He goes too in depth about every topic and doesn't really focus on what is going to be on his tests, which are very difficult. He assumes his students are already skilled in biology and isn't an ideal professor if you are not already very good at bio and chem. He also disparages many questions, which discouraged me from speaking.
ABSOLUTELY would NOT recommend. Getting by with an A as of now, but he is not understanding AT ALL. The whole class is a toss-up with kids PRAYING he offers a curve at the end. Test averages are insanely low and he expects his students to recall the MOST RANDOM facts. Definitely NOT a student-oriented teacher. Feel like trash after taking this.
Much harder with online classes. Expects you to know random facts about biology and chemistry that are vaguely mentioned in the textbook. Tests are very hard and over very specific content. Test averages are low and does not give opportunities to raise grade after test.
Really great professor who cares about his students' success. He focuses on why things happen and the big picture. Taught study skills that were really helpful. Going to OH's helps a lot, especially when you don't catch what he says in class (he posts his lecture videos). Go to TA reviews, ask ?s, do HW and sqaurecap and you'll get an A.
This is the most difficult class I have ever taken. He's really nice but this class is the bane of my existence. So weirdly specific questions, uhm yeah the test average was like a 70, and he knows that. Uhm. Yeah.
One of the best professors ive ever had. Genuinely cares so much about each and every student. Class material is very hard, but Dr. Sata will do everything he can to help you. Hate biology, but loved this class.
Not super difficult, but the lectures are so boring and monotone it's painful. He makes all of his students buy his own textbook, which is difficult to understand and poorly worded. He has made his exams more difficult with classes being online, and expects students to know very specific pieces of info. I would not recommend taking this professor.
Dr. Sata was amazing, take him if you can. With a web based class he is very strict and you will have to memorize everything to get a good grade. Other than that he is very caring and nice.
Maybe he was better in-person but I'm in Dr. Sata's class right now and it's definitely my hardest class. He gives a lot of resources, which is helpful I guess, but the tests are such a toss up. Also he uses Proctorio during exams - as far as I know, he is the only BIO 311C professor doing this. If you're taking online Bio, don't take this class.
Dr. Sata is a very good lecturer, and is very accommodating to his students. I thought some of the work was busy work and a little pointless though. You have to start studying a week in advance, but he gives plenty of material to help prepare for exams (homework keys, squarecap, practice exams, review sessions). The TAs were wonderful as well!
Very monotone and lectures are VERY BORING. Super content heavy, we had to recall the most random facts for tests. If you dont have trouble concentrating, he gives a lot of cool information and is very passionate about biology. BUT, know itll be a lot of work, ESPECIALLY if you dont remember much from your high school bio classes.
Dr. Sata has made his tests incredibly difficult and uses proctorio and zoom proctoring. Additionally you need a 94 to get an A in his class, rather then a 93, and he does not curve any exams. His final exam was a different format then the practice. In light of covid he made his class exponentially more difficult, I do not suggest him.
His class has definitely gotten harder this semester. His midterms were hard, but fair. They focused on key details from his textbook. His final was not good. Everything being said, he definitely could teach better. His lectures didn't help me at all. He isn't awful. He is dropping one of our midterms and gave extra points on the exams.
Lectures were unhelpful as he sped by each and every one. Midterms werent terrible once you get in the rhythm of his class, however the final was very difficult and poorly worded. Tests relied on very specific information.
Do NOT take this guy. He randomly made the final a different format from his other tests and extremely difficult over very random, detailed topics. Seems like he made the final the night before as the questions werent even in proper English and didnt make sense. He gives almost no bonus points. He also scams you by making you buy his crappy book.
just don't take him. the final was so hard, and he is not very good at teaching the material.
Midterms and a mandatory final exam determine about 60% of the grade. The rest 40% is pretty much participation. His midterms were difficult but fair; the final exam was challenging. I still recommend Dr. Sata. He's truly passionate about teaching Bio. He speeds through lectures, but he covers everything you need to know, and he records them.
His lectures can get boring sometimes, but they're well structured and info in them is good. He gives lots of resources to study for tests, so you're pretty prepared. A lot of the material on the tests is from the textbook, so you have to read it pretty thoroughly to do well. Tried to get us to buy his book that wasn't related to the class at all.
If you put in the work an A is easy to achieve. He and the teaching team gives you every resource you need to do well in the class. Attend the TA reviews before the test, they literally give you all the information you need for the exam. He gives you lots of practice questions to test yourself with. Great professor!
DO NOT TAKE HIM. I took this class bc high RMP rating and he did a 180 this semester. 60% of your grade will be from 4 exams. Exams are impossible. His textbook is an $80 spiral notebook. The final is like attending your GPA's funeral. Proctorio is req for exams, which is tedious. He also thinks a 77 class avg on an exam is decent. Barely any EC
Get ready to learn the materials by yourself. The TA's are helpful, but sata speeds thru his lectures. His textbook is condensed (and overpriced) yet his exams are specific & extremely difficult (C avg). It deals w application of the concepts. Although he's a good person, I don't think he's a good bio prof to take. 94% for A cutoff. Exams are 60%
You have to work for an A. The tests are specific and can be tricky but are overall fair. Reading the textbook is a must. The lectures are fast and unhelpful. He gives many resources and has lots of OH's so take advantage of those. Dr. Sata is super sweet, accommodating, and cares for his students. However, there are easier options for bio 311c.
Dr. Sata is a fantastic professor who really cares about his students. Given the current circumstances with COVID the class was a bit more difficult but understandable.
Dr. Sata truly cares about his students but his class was insanely difficult, more so than last semesters because of the online format. I understood nothing and his textbook is too basic for the exams. Least favorite class.
He lectures every single class period, even sometimes when we have a test later that day. I would say his grading is extremely tough as he asks for a lot. Yes as a college student the exams are going to be harder, but for a Freshman Entry-Level class it should not be this hard. The averages all year for the exams were C+.
I believe anybody who signs up for this class can achieve an A. I really enjoyed his class and he is a very understanding professor. He gives big curves and chances to drop low test scores. His assignments are super easy, but the tests are harder. Study for his tests, make sure to go through the test outlines he gives and with TIME!
He's a great professor and cares a lot for his students but sometimes his lectures can be difficult to keep up with. He gives a lot of resources to use for studying so as long as you're using that and attending lectures, you should be fine. His TAs are also super helpful.
He was a good professor that really cared about his students. Tests were difficult, but if you study hard, you can definitely achieve an A in the class.
Very hard class if you are not pre-med. I imagine class would be perfect for anyone preparing for medical school based on the amount of information we were expected to memorize and regurgitate.
He was a good professor. I hated the course throughout the entire semester, but in the end I realized that I learned more than I ever thought I would. You will have to push yourself, but an A is definitely doable. I got a 99 when it was all over. Heavy curve! He is sweet and caring, but his exams are very specific. SQUARECAPS, KHP HW, LECTURES!
His test were very heavy and the content on the test did not correlate with the lessons, so you kinda have to go beyond what is taught. I made the mistake of only studying the lectures :(. He is a very tough grader, I recommend to not take this class if you want to be mentally stable after a test.
Dr. Sata is a very caring professor and is a good person. However, his class is awful. Unless youre pre med, youre not going to do good. Spring semesters average on exam one was a 66. A little ridiculous. Cant even study enough to pass.
Waisted 80 dollars on a required book that doesn't even help with exams, he honestly only made us buy it because its his book. The only thing that will help you is passing the test since it's a large percentage of our grade. The second exam there were very few students that passed and he had to curve but was extremely passive aggressive.
If you can register for another professor, DO IT. Seriously the worst professor I've had in my academic career. Expects you to have a PhD before coming into this beginner class, and laughs at you when you ask questions. Talks at the speed of light and handwriting you can't read. Extremely passive aggressive. Exams nothing like anything you learned.
This class was exceptionally difficult for an intro class. Way too much info given and so much so that it gets buried with what you need to know for the exams. Exams are so hard and 66 was the average for the exams. He was passive aggressive when we all did bad and took away resources because of it. Studying doesn't help, take someone else!
His lectures and textbook are very vague and boring. Despite this being an introductory class, he expects you to have A LOT of prior knowledge. He switched up the exam format for the final exam and didn't offer much of a curve. I wouldn't recommend him to anyone, especially if you haven't taken biology since freshman year of high school.
Dr. Sata is very intelligent and knows his stuff. The class was fine up until the final. I had an A in the class after working very hard the entire semester. I studied well over 15 hours and barely passed the final, it was the hardest, most unattainable test I have ever taken. His grade cut off for an A is a 94 and very rarely gives a curve.
This course is an INTRO to bio course but that is NOT the case, it felt like it was geared for pre-meds. This class made me feel absolutely miserable every day, if you have a bad registration date, wait until next semester to get another professor. I used to like biology, but hated it after taking this course. Exams were extremely difficult.
Being brutally honest, I was not studying at the beginning of the course. I got a serious wake-up call, and so I went to office hours and bettered my study skills (active recall) and then I did ALOT better. Pay attention to lectures and TA reviews because if you read between the lines, you'll know exactly whats gonna be on the test. He's tough tho.
Dr. Sata is a good person but isn't the best professor. He expects the students to know many things and concepts before even teaching them. his exams are 70% application-based, it isn't enough that you know the info, you have to learn how to apply it to real-life situations too. He can work around grades a little bit though!!
This class was a whirlwind. The class averages for the tests were always below a 'C' and he had to curve so much all the time. Your grade will be fine taking him but I went from a 50 all semester to an 89 as my final grade, that's how much he had to curve. I didn't really learn anything in this class it was super dense.
Good luck - do not take this class if you care about yourself
You can tell that Dr. Sata is a good man who is passionate about biology, but he expects way too much from students for an intro class. You can memorize every word from the textbooks, lectures, and review sessions, and still won't do well. The exams are filled with words you've never even heard before. Impossible. Don't take this class.
Best of luck this is the worst class I have ever taken and Dr. Sata is by far the worst professor I have ever had. He wrote his own textbook in the worst way possible. Find any other teacher or wait to take this class if you have to have him. He is awful!!!!
Dr. Sata is amazing. I was very skeptical when I first started this class, because it seemed like one of those classes with a lot of work and a professor that expects you to do everything perfectly or else you won't get the grade you want. But Dr. Sata really cares, and he gives you a lot of room to make mistakes and still get an A.
Charles Darwin couldn't pass this class if he tried. Expects you to have tons of prior knowledge in biology, and can be easily confusing. Is passionate about biology, but I felt like I needed an M.D. to understand what was going on. He wrote the textbook which is used in class, but it doesn't help much. Don't take this course if you don't have to.
Majority of grade is tests. Got my butt kicked first semester, but I still pulled through. Dr. Sata's very kind and his lectures are great; I'd self-sabotaged if anything. You'll have to put in a lot of work to do well! If you're like me and bad with biology/memorization, you'll need to dedicate a good chunk of your week to studying and revising
Dr. Sata is very passionate about biology which clearly shows in his lectures. The lectures tend to include more info than what's tested, but he'll tell you what you need to know. His textbook, like the lectures, is dense sometimes. He provides several extra credit options. Overall, great professor and makes an effort to help each student succeed.
Prof Sata, went too in-depth for an intro bio class. His lectures were 3x a week and each 1 hr long, but filled with unnecessary info. The true savior of this course was the TAs who held a weekly unit review. That was basically the only thing that helped me pass this course. Online exams used proctorio and zoom, so no notes. 30 MC and 5 FR.
This class was unnecessarily tough. I studied so hard for every single midterm that we had, and ended up with a B on all of them. His tests are all application based, and a lot of the multiple choice questions were centered around minor details. However, towards the end of the semester, your grade will work itself out.
I came in with basically no biology knowledge and still ended up with a B. I did struggle a lot throughout the semester and crammed the night before the exams. If i could go back I'd start watching basically the whole course on khan academy. However, he is a really caring professor and does want every student to succeed.
Dr. Sata is a great professor. This was the hardest class I've ever taken but I learned so much and he cares about his students and wants them to do well. You will definitely need to read and study for this class, but it's worth it and if you work hard, it is totally doable to do well.
At the beginning of the semester, I was very confused with the class in general, so it took a lot of effort and time outside of class to catch up and understand the content. That said, once you know what's going on he does explain everything well and gives extra credit if you show up to class. Only issue with lectures was he talked quite fast.
Lectures were very great and well organized, a lot of completion grade and extra credits. He has this Textbook that is required but I ended up loving that textbook because it is very organized and full of important contents and has a lot of summarizing charts and tables. Mandatory attendance. HE REALLY REALLY CARES ABOUT STUDENTS TO LEARN!
Dr. Sata is so passionate about biology, but his lectures carry a lot of information so you have to actively take notes to do well. If you put the effort into the class, you will do really well. Lots of opportunities to do well and his class is pretty interesting
Dr. Sata cares about his students. I took his 311C course and it was great. All of his lectures used Squarecap and that was the main grade other than the exams/discussion worksheets. As long as you listen to his lectures, take good notes, and read his summarized textbook, you'll be good! Don't be afraid to ask for help as he's more than willing.
Dr. Satha was an interesting professor. It was a bit difficult to understand what he was saying, but it was also oddly calming. The course is ultimately up to you -- if you show up and engage, even minimally, then you will be alright. Make sure to use those quizlets, too. The struggle is in memorizing cellular respiration! Prepare yourself for it.
Dr. Sata goes very in depth in topics, including things even he admits are not required for an intro level course. He would be a good intro bio professor to prepare premed students. As a student with only one bio requirement, it was very frustrating to know he was grading harshly to prepare me for something I wasn't going to pursue.
Very fair intro bio course, exams clearly reflect class materials. In-class questions are very similar to exam questions. If you know the book content, understand the discussion worksheets and review the in-class questions, you will most likely get an A. Also, lectures are interesting: relatable examples and insight into why the content matters.
This class is extremely difficult. The questions he asks are super specific and in depth. He expects you to catch on to things very quickly. I sat in the front row and attended every single lecture and still could barely understand what he was saying. I learned more in my high school freshman biology class.
Dr. Sata is a great professor. He can go off-topic during lectures and go more into detail than what's on the test, but he always makes sure to point out what you need to know on the test and gives hints to specific examples. At the end of the year, there is lots of extra credit opportunity. Read the Sentia textbook and go to discussion sections!
Avoid this man at all cost. The exams were impossible, he expected the utmost detail on his tests, his TAs were tough graders on the free response, and his lectures were long-winded. His class went down the drain with the online transition for COVID. Also, unlike other BIO311C profs, he offers practically zero extra credit or exam curves so beware.
Very organized. For 3 exams, all info is in his textbook. Recommend reading before lectures. He gives a lot of extra credit and curves. Also very kind and approachable. Do well on the midterms because the final is a beast and you want to be able to "save" a lot of your points for that. Stay on top of it and you should be fine.
Prof Sata is a kind person but is extremely difficult to follow in lecture without prior AP Bio experience. He provides a lot of study materials, but most are not in-depth enough to function well for tests. And even though discussion section work was supposedly a completion grade, I was graded harshly on many of them, pulling down my overall grade.
At first, the class and him seem very intimidating but it gets easier. Lots of extra credit at the end and makes it possible to get an A in the class. All you have to do is try your best and reach out for help! All of the TA's are wonderful. I didn't get an A on a single test individually but ended up with an A at the end, take that as you will.
Don't let the bad reviews scare you. Dr. Sata genuinely cares about his students and really wants them to learn. Take notes from his textbook (not the generic one) and you will have all the information you need for all assignments and tests. If you put in work an A is very doable.
The majority of my class failed every exam. The study guides don't prepare you for the difficulty of the exams, and when people pointed this out to him, he sent out passive-aggressive emails that we failed because we didn't buy his study-tips book that was irrelevant to the class. He required three books, and he wrote two of them. Take someone else
Dr. Sata is passionate about teaching and biology. You should ask questions about complex concepts to Dr. Sata or any TA (they are really nice & approachable), and they can explain it in simpler terms. Tips - Go to discussion sections and if you don't have time to study, read the discussion section slides which is is a good summary.
Class was extremely difficult for an intro to bio class. Mostly a lot of self teaching is involved because his lectures go by very fast, there's not time to truly grasp the information. Please switch out if possible
The course covers a lot of content, including lecture notes, textbook notes, AND squarecap. Exams are proctored and not open notes but manageable with efficient studying. Assignments were not too rigorous, and a LOT of stuff (+10) was dropped at the end of the semester so it helps increase grades. There is a group project but it's an easy A
Dr. Sata really cares about his students and wants them to succeed. He has many opportunities for earning points back from assignments and as long as you read his textbook you will do fine on the tests. He focuses on applications of biology so it might be a little more challenging than other courses but for me it was great.
This class is very doable so long as you stay on top of the readings. Test questions come straight from Dr. Sata's textbook, the in-class activities, and the homework, which the TAs have all the answers to. In order to do well, just go to any TA's office hours or Dr. Sata's office hours and they will give you answers and explanations to help you.
-Very Fast (Does not realize we do not all have doctorate degrees in bio) - Long lectures that easily get off topic - Boring voice and likes to brag about himself - Nice man but awful professor - Short answers are tough but multiple choice are frequently reused from others - AP bio does not set you up to be successful in this class
Horrible professor. His tests had many mistakes in them. Horrible. Would not recommend at all.
Amazing professor, fair exams, interesting content
Not taking AP Bio, I was kind of worried, but this class is very manageable. I didn't find lectures helpful, but they were required. To prepare for tests, I would utilize the TA online reviews because those did more to help study than Dr. Sata's lectures. Most grades were completion or easy full points.
Dr. Sata is a caring and funny professor, but his lectures go by very fast. I personally didn't find them helpful, but found the online unit reviews by the TAs more helpful to me. A good portion of the test questions are from square cap and homeworks! Even though the material is hard, I think an A is very doable if you put the time and effort.
Dr. Sata is a very nice professor and it's clear that he does care about his students. However, I found his lectures to be very boring and I could not pay attention to them at all. Many assignments are simple and straightforward but exams are quite difficult (read the textbook & they probably won't be). TA's host unit reviews that help immensely.
Very kind to his students, but lectures were boring and hard to follow. Grade is heavily weighted by exams, bombing an exam, drops letter grades. Most test material can be found in textbook. Also, grade is influenced by TA, & mine was awful. Also, both waited until last minute to enter grades, and my grade fluctuated drastically. Very frustrating.
the class was extremely stressful for some reason. lectures were very fast, and confusing for the most part. READ THE TEXTBOOK!!! look over the hw's & square caps before the tests & watch the review videos from the TA's. those helped a lot he's a good person, and this class definitely makes you a better student, but not worth the stress of it all.
The lectures can be fast if you don't read before, but the readings are very small and spread out. Just do a little bit every day, and studying for exams will be easy. He's very kind and a fair grader. There are online recordings. Read, make your own review, ask questions to TA and office hours. Exam questions are very similar to hw and squarecap
Dr Sata is a great professor. His lectures are a little fast, so prepare well with his textbook and try not to fall behind. His office hours are great for clearing up questions especially before the exams. As long as you make an effort to really try and understand the concepts instead of just memorize then you'll do fine.
Dr. Sata truly cares about his students and wants them to succeed. I made a b on every exam and finished with an a, so his class is very doable! He gives extra credit (go to discussion sections) and the reviews the TA's hold are helpful. He is such a sweet man and made biology interesting, just remember to study hard!!!!
Weekly hw = open note/web | Group project useless but easy A | Exams = 75% application. 3/4 on Friday nights. no scratch paper. sqaurecap/hw = exams questions | Lecture deep dive on textbook details - will be on test. Said, "You will not find this information in any entry-level textbook, not even mine" | mediocre + stressful - you'll survive
Dr. Sata is very kind! I found his lectures to be fast and a bit difficult to understand at times. The best way to get the most out of his lectures is to read his textbook beforehand. He gives out extra credit, so make sure to attend discussion! Test have a lot of application, but an A is very doable on the exams & for an overall average if you try
Sata is a very kind teacher who will help you if you ask questions and provides a textbook that you should use as it is full of essential information for the tests. However, his lectures are very fast and if you do not have a strong background in biology, this could be challenging as he uses many words you are not already familiar with.
Great bio professor !! He grades really easy so it's pretty hard to fail (I had some family issues so I flunked the midterms but still passed) The group project is also really simple. Just go to lectures and discussions, and show interest by going to office hours so he gets to know you!
Dr. Sata is loved by all his students. He is very kind and even said that he won't let you fail! His lectures aren't the best, but everything you need to know is in his textbook. His textbook is easy to read- short, organized, and straight to the point. Exams questions are very similar to the practice exams, DSWs, and squarecaps. The easiest A.
Dr. Sata's class is very heavy on textbook readings. My advice is to stay ahead on the recommended chapter readings and to take good notes on those to do well on the Squarecap questions and minimize the time you spend studying for exams.
Dr. Sata was a very kind and fun professor! He truly cares about his students. I attended most lectures because square-cap was graded (he drops a bunch at the end) but I never listened to any. They were boring and often hard to understand. I learned through his textbook and the practice tests he provides. All tests are application based, beware.
I loved Dr. Sata! He definitely stresses the importance of really retaining and applying knowledge, and he is very passionate about biology. While the class content can be a lot, as long as you have good study habits you'll be fine. His textbook, the ICA's, squarecap, and lecture notes are all helpful resources. Put in the work and you'll be okay!
Definitely a challenging class if you're a freshman and don't have good study habits. The material is too fast paced at times, for example we would be covering material for the next unit two weeks before we took the exam for the previous unit. I had a great TA for my discussion sections, but if you don't I could see thus class being more difficult
Dr. Sata is a sweetheart, def the best intro-bio professor at UT. The only required text for his class is his own textbook and it's straightforward and easy to understand. 3 midterms + final but a lot were curved due to images not displaying. Squarecap sessions in class, weekly homeworks, and discussion section worksheets but lots of drops.
Dr. Sata is probably the best bio professor for 311C. He's super sweet and always open to answering questions. There is a required online textbook, but I think it helped a lot in the class. The tests weren't a breeze but definitely manageable. The TA's were supportive and I think Dr. Sata gives a lot of resources to help you do well.
Dr. Sata was a very sweet man, but his lectures were sometimes hard to follow. Textbook was written by him and was extremely concise, sometimes to a fault. Attendance is measured through live Squarecap questions. Overall not a difficult class so long as you put in the work for it. He also gave a few extra credit opportunities.
He's so sweet and caring, and really advocates for the student. His TAs are somewhat hit or miss (not really approachable), but his office hours really come in handy for the exam. Has clear guidelines for what needs to be done for exams, and has a brain dump study session the class before the exam. Have to study, but 100% worth it.
This course felt disorganized. Canvas was hard to navigate and messy, and the lectures/textbooks were far more detailed than we were expected to know for exams which made it feel like I was drowning in material. Exams are kind of long. Despite this, he is extremely caring and eager to answer questions and help you succeed.
I want my tuition back. Disorganized, deaf, and gives lectures which don't cover anything asked on exams or assignments. Took him while working on my second undergrad degree and can confidently say he ran the worst class I have ever taken. I think his good ratings on here are because he mostly grades based on effort.
Dr. Sata will make sure you have every resource needed to succeed in the class. Lecture heavy, however his practice exams & Squarecap questions are always used directly on the exams. There are no tricks here, you just need to use the correct resources. He is passionate about what he teaches and wants to help you succeed in any way!
Prof. Sata is so kind and cares about his students' learning. Tons of review before every test, and there's a good amount of homework but it actually helps you understand the concepts a lot better. Lectures can get a bit dull, but he does a good job talking about concept applications that he covers on tests
such a kind prof THE BEST curves tests and the final, gives lots of bonus points and truly cares about your well being. He wants people to be able to apply concepts and not just forget everything. Everything is completion grades except exams ofc so it's not hard to get an A. Go to his office hours, barely anyone does and it's helpful.
Dr. Sata is so kind and you can tell he really cares about his students! There are many opportunities for points in the class besides exams. I can't say enough about how well he prepares his students, and how accessible he is.
Dr. Sata's lectures were not my favorite, but it is easy to do well in his class. Even if you don't do well on the tests, if you get attendance points in class and do the completion assignments, you will still do well. Although the tests can be pretty difficult, they are curved and you will do well on them if you put some effort in. Super nice guy!
Dr. Sata is a really kind professor, and he shows that he cares about his students! I don't know where all of the bad reviews came from because he provides all of the resources you need to succeed in his class if you do the practice questions he provides and pay attention to lectures. Assignments other than exams are completion. Highly recommend!
Lectures were fairly boring so I skipped most toward the end of the semester, but overall an easy class. Generous curving, easy homework, Squarecaps were often available. Only qualm is the $70 I spent on his textbook but other than that fine choice for BIO 311C
I found his lectures to be dry and confusing, but I went because of the Squarecaps (they were graded). He is really kind and he does provide a ton of resources (past lecture vids/notes, exam reviews by him and the TAs), but the class felt generally disorganized. He also doesn't respond well to emails. Self-study and the TA reviews saved me
he was super nice & caring, i loved this man. his lectures were all abt applying concepts & helped for the exam. discussion & the worksheets also helped for the free response part of the tests. squarecap, practice questions, & reviewing notes from lectures was key for me. grading criteria was also very clear.
Dr. Sata is a great person. His lectures are very fast-paced, so you HAVE to read the textbook or look at past lecture notes beforehand to keep up. This class is not easy, but Dr. Sata does drop lots of grades in order to help your grade. There are 3 midterms, 1 final, and one group project. Go to discussion sections and lecture to get extra credit
Dr. Sata definitely knows what he's talking about, but his lectures were unorganized. He discussed information we didn't necessarily have to know. Do all the available practice to study for tests, and you will be perfectly fine. The majority of concepts I learned outside class, but this class is totally doable, I ended with like a 99.
Sata is actually adorable. The class is graded by a good scale that puts students at an advantage. A majority of grades can be easily obtained and as long as you keep up with the unit as it is going by and read the textbook and look at old lecture notes (written out), you can easily get an A on every exam. This was one of the easiest science class.
Dr. Sata is one of the BEST professors I've had. He makes it very clear what will be on the tests and how to prepare yourself. He gives you tons of resources and truly wants his students to succeed. Definitely would recommend him to anyone taking BIO311C!!
Great professor!!! Explains concepts concisely and focuses a lot on teaching the overall ideas and building understanding rather than memorizing. One of my favorite professors so far and would take again. There is a $70 textbook but it's good, and attendance is recommended since there's in-class squarecap (with a couple drops). Would recommend!
Took him in Fall '21 while class was online. His class was a lot of work, but I learned a lot. He taught from textbooks he wrote and is very passionate. Make sure you go to class and answer the attendance questions. His tests employ open-ended application questions and some of the attendance questions. Pay attention and work hard to do well.
He never turned his mic on and i could never understand him despite sitting in the front, his lectures are boring and his slides have very little words on them so good luck using them as a study tool, the squarecap is difficult and he doesnt give out enough assignments to help us understand the course.
I love Dr. Sata. I believe he truly wants his students to succeed. At first, his lectures were difficult to follow, but it just takes some time to get used to. I would definitely recommend and would take his class again if I could.
This class is like every other bio class but it is very enjoyable because it is professor Sata teaching. There are a lot of extra credit opportunities and the class is manageable because the TAs are helpful and you can ask questions after the lecture! There is also a super easy group project in the middle of the semester but he gives a lot of time.
Considering I took this class my first semester of college, I was definitely a bit overwhelmed with the content. However, Dr. Sata is very kind and provides resources that actually help you maintain and improve your performance. Tests were very daunting in this class but fair. He gave lots of extra credit towards the end too, which was great.
Sata definitely has more difficult content than some of the other bio profs, but his grading system makes it pretty easy to get an A, and a lot of exam questions come directly from classwork, so as long as you do your work, it's not that hard to get an A, plus numerous extra credit options. He's a boring lecturer, but such a sweet and funny guy.
Be prepared to read the textbook prior to class so you can keep up with his fast-paced lectures. His teaching style was a little bit diffiuclt for me to understand, but the textbook was straightforward. I would recommend this class to anyone who is willing to do the required work. Sata is funny and clearly cares about the success of his students!
This class was extremely difficult. While the tests are very challenging he does provide a study guide and practice tests before each exam. The final is in person and not open notes....... multiple other professors have take home finals that are open resource. Honestly just a degrading and frustrating class overall.
Sata is a good professor, however his lectures are extremely boring. His slides are primarily pictures, so you'll have to learn the concepts yourself. His book is extremely disorganized and filled with spelling errors. If you complete the squarecaps, DSWs, and ICAs, you will pass. His exams are difficult, however this class isn't that test heavy.
Dr. Sata is very entertaining, but he also really cares about the learning process and how one should approach college coursework. Lectures can be confusing at times. Grades are assigned using the points with lots of points being low effort. HW, Squarecaps, and lecture notes are helpful for test prep. He prepares you very well for UT BIO classes.
He's nice, but his lectures are boring, the slides have few words, and if you zone out for a sec, you will be lost. He does some curving. Attend discussion for extra credit. 1 group project requiring an interview + website building. 3 unit exams, 1 cumulative final, never open note. $60 textbook that you have to buy. Graded in-class Squarecaps.
Dr. Sata is extremely knowledgable and kind. Lectures are boring and not super helpful. Make sure you do your Squarecaps and read from his textbook and his written notes before exams. Exams are difficult but once you get used to them they aren't so bad. He is one of the harder 311C professors but you will learn a lot from this class.
Dr. Sata is a great professor that truly cares for the success of his students. There is a textbook that is around $50-60 and accessible on Amazon, but it is really only needed if you want further clarification on concepts taught in class. He does tend to move quickly in lectures, but otherwise I truly enjoyed his class!
Sata is really nice he adds points so if you don't do well on the midterms it isn't that bad. If you haven't taken AP Bio, this class will be very fast-paced, so make sure to keep up throughout the semester because the units all build up on each other. He has great TAs who are really helpful, he also reuses previously used questions on exams!
You will learn a lot, nice guy very hard class
His lectures are very boring and hard to get through. Even afterwards, he covers multiple topics that aren't featured in any other biology class. He was very late to grading assignments. His textbook (required) was full of mistakes and wasn't even fully accessible until halfway through the semester. He is a good person, but not a good teacher imo.
Loved Dr. Sata's class...he's funny and extremely intelligent; go talk to him during office hours even if you don't need help with anything. Would totally recommend...tests are hard but he's generous with curves and just wants his students to learn. Amazing professor and TAs!
A good person, and nice, just not a good professor. Content was unorganized and unclear what we needed to know. Textbook, posted slides, and lectures all contained different information. Curves generously though.
I could never understand his lectures so just read the textbook; you'll learn better from it even though it has a lot of formatting errors. Do the squarecaps for attendance. Group project is a website + interview. Curves tests a bit. Go to discussions for extra credit. Study ICAs and squarecaps on the side because he sneaks some into tests.
Attendance was taken as a part of your grade. Tests were difficult and felt like we didn't cover the material in class. I probably would've gotten a better grade if I studied more lol
Only went to lectures for Squarecap (used to take attendance), didn't get much else from going. TAs were what made the class very doable. Everything is completion, except for exams so getting an A is doable. Tip: study Squarecaps, ICAs, quizlets to do very well. He reuses a lot of questions from these on exams. Overall, if you study you'll be fine.
Boring lectures. Only went because of mandatory attendance. Take advantage of extra credit. I pretty much taught the entire course to myself. He reuses a lot of questions, and most answers are on google, so if you study squarecap questions and read the textbook, you'll be fine. He also curves exams and drops some assignments.
Dr. Sata was an alright teacher. I though the lectures were useless, but the textbook is helpful. I just read textbook to learn topics. Most of test questions we had seen before which probably explains how I did well. I also found the discussion section worksheets were not useful. Nice guy, but I think he should change a few things.
Dr. Sata requires attendance through locked squarecap sessions, although the lectures are pretty much useless. His way of teaching was difficult to grasp. His grading scale was very confusing and he wasn't very helpful with questions/concerns. If you put effort into everything else in class, the only points that you could miss are from the exams.
it was just intro bio but he was still pretty chill. lecturers were a little boring and hard to follow but he is rlly helpful in office hours.
He's a sweet guy, but it was difficult to keep up with lectures. I often zoned out during class and taught myself the content. Overall, it wasn't too bad, but I would recommend exploring other professors as well.
Don't take him. His questions are confusing. Online exams aren't written the best. The TAs barely understand the bare basic concepts. His textbook was released midway of my semester, yet guess what the exams were based off? I have taken Bio 311C at a previous college, and man did he divert and just teach useless information. Take someone else.
There are so many lectures and they packed with content. His class is pretty challenging considering the poor/ insufficient explanations and many different sources of information (lectures, textbook, etc.) Wording of test questions was sometimes confusing However, he is so supportive if you reach out to him about struggling in class.
I do not recommend. The class was so disorganized and confusing. On the day of the final he sent out an email saying there would be 84 questions. In reality there were 100. Both his lectures and his poorly written textbook are incoherent & confusing. It's never clear what we should study, and the tests feel like a refraction of the course content.
TBH i did horrible on every exam but sata literally pulls out SOOOOO much extra credit it's crazy lmao. He's a really sweet man, but his lectures sadly are not helpful at all. Most content had to be self-learned. Honestly tho if you do well on squarecaps, DSW, HWS, Projects, and just miscellaneous assignments you'll be good lol.
I really liked this class largely because Dr Sata is the sweetest and is so passionate about the material. The lectures are difficult to understand but the TAs and textbooks help a ton. This class was really hard but if you study consistently and do all the extra credit stuff you can definitely scrape together an A!
I failed all 3 midterms and just passed my final and I still got an A he gave me A LOT of extra credits on the midterms. He rounds up every exam he is awesome please take him if you want an A.
Dr. Sata is a sweet and kind professor, but his lectures aren't helpful. I had to teach myself most of the information after sitting in lecture. You NEED to review HWs, Squarecap, and discussion worksheet Qs before tests (super helpful). I would also read his textbook, which is relevant to what he teaches. Overall, not bad but get ready to study.
Dr. Sata is a really kind man, but his lectures weren't helpful at all. I had to teach myself everything throughout the semester. Our class average on the final was still god awful after six points of extra credit and a small curve. He truly does care about his students, but be prepared to teach yourself nearly all the content.
Dr. Sata is a kind, genuine professor, but his lectures aren't helpful at all. His lectures consist of him reading off the slides and going on random tangents. Get ready to read the textbook. Not to mention, there's a lot of homework assignments due. Responds to emails, but never actually does what he says. TAs clearly don't care about the class.
Dr. Sata was very kind & caring. As long as you put in the work, you'll be just fine. He is VERY fair in terms of grading & exams. Yes you have to read a lot, but that's just how college is tbh, it wasn't impossible. Summer course was very fast-paced, but again he is willing to work with you. Use the resources he gives you bc they help BIG TIME
I took 311D with Dr.Sata this summer, it was very tough, but yet again it was a summer paced course, but his exams were very fair about 5-7 questions of ur midterm are squarecaps and the free response are random questions from DSW's. His final was very easy, the TA's and Dr. Sata are very kind and willing to work with you.
As long as you are ready to do some self studying or find a group to review with the class is really enjoyable.
He uses his own textbook, written by him, so it doesnt connect to any other courses. His lectures also do not make much sense as he just shows photos and expect us to come in with a lot of background knowledge. He seems nice as a person, but fails to assist his students and the class average is always around 60% for tests.
This professor is god awful. He needs to be fired. He uses his own textbook and profits of off the students. He has a heavy accent so I cannot understand his even if I really try. I took AP bio, AP chem and organic chem Got all A'S in high school and I still struggle in his class because he is so bad at teaching.
It is so difficult to follow his lectures not even because of his thick accent, but because everything is so disorganized. This then makes it difficult to do well on his tests, which make up a great portion of the course grade.
Dr. Sata was great and although sometimes his lectures were confusing, the exams were very straightforward and like his homeworks, if not repeating questions - and would sometimes randomly give us extra credit and grade boosts. The class was exactly like AP biology.
His lectures are unclear and hard to follow. Attendance is required, don't try to get out of going to them because he'll catch on eventually. Exams are not terribly difficult, I mostly self studied for the class and did fine.
Very solid professor overall, his lectures are unclear at times, but the tests are very straightforward, and there is a review list for each one. Do not skip the textbook, you have to read it.
Dr.Sata is sooo sweet and genuinely cares about his students. If you put in the work then his class is very fair and I really enjoyed having him as a professor. His tests don't trick you and there are lots of other ways to get points
He is the sweetest! Honestly, if I put more effort into studying for his tests, I would've gotten better grades. He offers many extra credit opportunities and although his lectures are very monotonous, the TA's and resources provided help with studying. Take advantage of canvas, because his tests are very similar to homework questions.
Dr. Sata is a really sweet guy who wants his students to succeed. That being said, he is not the best at teaching the material during lectures. You have to study outside of class and read his textbook to understand the material. Overall, start studying early, review learning objectives, squarecaps, hw's, and you'll do fine on the tests!
Dr. Sata is sweet and caring, but he is not that great of a professor. His lectures are fast-paced and confusing; he tends to mumble and is hard to understand. To succeed, you must do a lot of self-study. The tests are very intense, and there are few resources to study besides the unhelpful textbook, previous homework, and the squarecaps.
He is a very caring and sweet professor. His lectures are hard to follow, and I felt like I had to teach myself the majority of the time. It was also required that we buy his textbook, and it was very lengthy and hard to follow. Ultimately, if you take this class be prepared to learn outside class, and get a really good study group.
Dr. Sata is an okay professor. His lectures are terrible and you cannot learn anything from them, you basically have to self-teach. His tests aren't too bad as long as you study quite a bit in advance. He is caring and gives lots of extra credit and curves.
Dr. Sata was an amazing professor and we all had a great time in his class. I learned so much from his lectures and his tests are very fair. Definitely recommend taking Dr. Sata!
Sata was very kind, but his lectures were not effective. I had to teach myself all of the material, which was extremely challenging because the textbook and study guides were not helpful for the tests. Overall, it was difficult to earn a decent grade on his exams, and I struggled to learn anything from the lectures.
Dr. Sata is a very nice person, but unfortunately an awful professor. I would highly recommend taking another prof, as he is the most difficult in concept and exam. This semester he took away extra credit, practice exams, and curves. It is quite impossible to calculate your grade, as he's never clear with grading expectations.
Tests felt random and I missed the T-pain concert because of his final
genuinely just not a good teacher. useless, unorganized lectures. you have to teach yourself everything and the final was really hard even with studying a lot in advance. Sata may have a phD in biology, but he definitely doesn't have a degree in teaching, and it is very evident. The TAs were honestly more helpful.
Dr. Sata is an amazing and caring person, however, it is very hard to follow his lectures. His course is very content heavy, and the content is not easy. Unless you are spending a decent amount of time studying outside of class efficiently, it's likely you will not get an A. Utilize the abundance of resources the TAs give you.
Very hard to follow lectures but I think that hes a good professor and cares about your grade and gives a ton of extra credit. be prepared to memorize his holy bible the textbook of the great biology "Dr Sata".
Dr. Sata is overall a great man and very compassionate when it comes to technical difficulties during the exam. Unfortunately, the lectures are no help (despite there being daily quiz) and the textbook has many errors making it difficult to learn. I had to teach myself all semester and the class is significantly harder than other bio311c teachers,
Overall, good bio professor and nice. But as a teacher, not really. His grading is confusing and his tests are hard. His textbook, exams and final had a bunch of spelling mistakes. But from what I have heard of other bio professors, he is one of the good ones. If you get him, make sure to study a lot and review over everything that he gives.
Dr. Sata's lectures were not helpful and content had to be self-taught. Although the textbook sucks, read it and study it as there are test questions from there. Focus on SquareCaps (heavily) and homework questions for tests as those are copy-pasted into the test. TA's were super helpful and gave answers to DSWs.
Dr. Sata is just an okay teacher… the lectures aren't of much help, be prepared to do a lot of self studying. The textbook is helpful for test-specific knowledge but it's basically just Cliff Notes so not good for learning difficult concepts. He offers enough extra credit/makeup opportunities to get the grade you want though.
Dr. Sata is a pretty good teacher if you go to office hours and put the effort in. Tests were hard and you do need to study a lot for them. I took AP Bio in HS and still found this class a little challenging despite passing the AP test. Be ready to read a lot. His TA's are also very helpful as well, and attended the online unit reviews.
Dr. Sata was the sweetest and most caring professor I had this semester, however, he doesn't really teach. Get ready to teach yourself everything. Try to get another professor if you can.
i highly emphasize going to the lectures (even though they're not helpful at all) because he does do online attendance from his personal website and it tracks your ip ... (i dont even know how or why it's possible but just go) he can see each student with different ips and you will receive 0s for attendance
Sata is super sweet but he does have a thick accent which can make it hard to understand at times. He's super helpful but the lectures can be hard to follow and rly aren't worth going too. Required squarecap each class tho
Sata's lectures are not the clearest, but I found that he did provide helpful resources (ICAs, review sheets) that helped with exam preparation. HWs were not especially difficult, and he only requires an 80% average for Squarecap to get full credit. I found that teaching myself was needed to get a grasp of some of the details of certain concepts.
Sata was very kind, considerate, and always emphasized on actually learning the material, but his lectures weren't that helpful because he would just read off of the slides and sometimes go on tangents---but he gave lots of extra credit, and there is a final, but it was just like a collection of past test questions and some new ones.
I personally found Dr. Sata's lectures helpful, especially the SquareCaps at the end to test comprehension; however, they were fast paced and were a bit tough since I tend to comprehend things slowly. Morgan B was the absolute best TA. I appreciated all the extra credit opportunities and how friendly and kind Dr. Sata was.
Honestly, if you get stuck with Dr. Sata because he is included with your FIG cluster, despite what people might say he isn't the worst professor ever. His lectures are really boring, but don't take the Squarecaps outside of lecture because he will catch you! The whole class is majority graded on 4 tests, and there is 1 random group project too.
I got Dr.Sata through my FIG. He is a very caring professor who wants his students to succeed, but I found him a little difficult to understand since he would occasionally mumble. I'd highly recommend studying ICAs, previous Squarecaps, and homeworks for his exams and start early! I think he's pretty fair and offers a good amount of extra credit.
He's really sweet and caring. His lectures are not engaging, but there are small things he mentions that will be on the exam. If you study and understand the homework's, ICAs, and squarecaps you will do well. Sometimes there were questions on the exams that could not be found anywhere except his textbook. Studied it hard. Exhausting, but worth it.
At first Dr. Sata's class seemed very overwhelming especially as my first ever college course, but once you understand how he teaches it is easy to get into a rhythm. His tests will be hard so study a week in advance and read his book I found it very helpful before each class. Lecture is boring but go to it. Lots of extra credit though.
Getting used to his class was difficult, but I ended up with a better understanding of the material and how to study thanks to this class. Study a lot for his exams, and you will be just fine. He is a very sweet and caring man which is apparent in all of lectures. He is super willing to help you succeed with an A.
I LOVED Dr. Sata!! Many students struggle in his class but if you study the ICAs and Squarecaps for exams you will do great. What you put into this course is what you get out of it. His lectures are not helpful and he is hard to understand but you still have to attend class to complete the SquareCap questions. Be prepared to teach yourself though.
Dr. Sata was very kind but he was somewhat of a bad lecturer. His textbook often had bits of his own interpretation of bio than what is always objectively true. Overall, there were opportunities for EC, but it felt like his TA's did the bulk of the work for him. It was mostly independent learning for everyone or for else we would've been plain lost
The tests were heavily based on the lectures and sometimes the questions were based on something that he mentioned quickly. The test questions were not very straightforward and can get easily confused. He was a very nice guy, but hard to succeed on the test.
He's such a nice guy but his exam were hard. Lectures are boring and you have to teach yourself everything.
Nice guy but his tests were pretty hard not gonna lie. You just have to put more effort studying for him and you'll be fine.
Don't take his class. Trust me don't take it
Do not take him. He is a really nice guy, objectively, but he is a horrible professor. He is hard to understand. Does not teach, but rather tells you to "understand the content" that you were never taught to comprehend. Just avoid taking him.
Sata is a really nice person but this class was unnecessarily difficult. The exams are SO hard and you have to know every little detail to even think about getting an A. His lectures and slides are extremely unhelpful. However he offers a lot of extra credit and curved final grades. He wasn't the worst but this class was so hard.
If you took AP/DC/IB bio in HS this will be an easy class, if not it's still VERY doable. Sata was so nice he would stay after lecture to answer questions, SO MUCH extra credit, TAs/Sata would give u answers to daily quizzes. He lectures fast, so study after class. Doesn't deserve the hate, just put some time into this class and u will be fine :)
He is very nice and approachable. Class is test-heavy, fail one and ur doomed. You have to memorize the textbook and apply all that info to examples in order to pass. He tells you to apply the concepts, but doesn't always explain a concept well. TAs are kind, but often just talk instead of actually helping you understand the topic.
He is such a nice man, his exams are hard and there are no practice exams, gives a lot of extra credit, has his own textbook, honestly you really have to dedicate time for this class because there is a lot of content
This class is hard to understand and comprehend. The lectures are not helpful but are required, and the exam questions are as difficult as they can be. The teacher is not helpful, and he does not answer any questions about clarity during the exams. DO NOT take this teacher unless forced. He is very kind, but just not a good teacher for this class.
Like actually don't take this class.
Dr. Sata is the goat. Literally one of the sweetest professors on this campus. The lectures are kinda boring but has some interesting things to say. The tests aren't too bad but you have to study for them for sure. The textbook is mandatory but I never read it and got by just fine. Dr. Sata is nowhere near as bad as people make him out to be.
chill and nice prof, but the lectures are pretty boring and tests are very hard. i felt so lost for like 3/4 of the semester, the lectures were unhelpful imo, he wouldn't really explain things, but i managed to make it out with an ok grade bc he offered a lot of extra credit.
Honestly he is a great professor. Anyone who does bad simply doesnt put in the time and effort. If you read the textbook the tests are easy. I was able to get all high As on his tests because I read, attended class, did his study guide, and ICS. Hes also such a nice man who wants you to do well!
I think Sata gets a bad rap. His class isn't easy, but very doable if you pay attention to lecture, keep up with material, and go to discussion. Look over squarecap questions and discussion worksheets before exams and you'll be fine. He offers extra credit and is super nice in office hours :)
I know a lot of people on here are trashing him but he is a really good professor. As long as you pay attention in class and do the quizzes/ homework you should be fine. The class is hard but doable, and he gives a lot of extra credit. There is also a textbook but I rarely read it and did fine
Sata is an incredibly nice professor but his class is very much based around his textbook. His class required lots of memorization and his final basically requires you to memorize his entire 180+ page textbook. The class was not insanely difficult and AP Bio really translates well to this class!
Great and kind professor with a lot of experience, main downside is that his lectures aren't super engaging and exams are difficult. His textbook is your bible, and you need to make sure to study it fully for exams, and redo the squarecap questions as well. Clearly a weed-out class, your grade will be directly proportional to the work put in.
Dr. Sata is incredibly kind/accessible during OH, however the mandatory lectures are not very useful and hard to follow. Squarecaps are useful and questions are often repeated on exams. Very textbook heavy, he requires you to memorize little details for the exams, which can be pretty hard. Easy extra credit though, he wants you to succeed.
Sata is a great professor; he offers much extra credit and his tests are very straightforward.
While this course with Dr. Sata can be difficult, it really teaches you how to study and apply material. Some people don't always find his lectures to be useful, but I found they reinforced the content. The exams are difficult, but they are certainly doable if you read the textbook and utilize all study materials (Squarecap, ICAs).
covers content really well and in-depth and provides lots of resources outside of the classroom to ensure you succeed in exams. be prepared to take detailed notes and put in the work!
Don't take him unless you have to, lectures are useless, textbook is useless considering the questions on the exams are a lot more complex than what he actually teaches which is very surface level stuff. Super sweet guy but not the best professor
This class requires you to think on a deeper level that Dr. Sata does emphasize. His textbook is not bad but there are grammatical errors that affect how you understand the book. Tests are difficult and require application based thinking.
Need to pay for the textbook + an access code. Attendance mandatory & tracked w/ WiFi+room codes. Tests easy to study for b/c he uses hw questions + same format. I'd say your grade is directly related to how much effort you put in to studying/reading past questions. If you took AP Bio and did well, you should be fine (even if he says otherwise).
Dr. Sata is a kind and caring professor, however his class is very fast paced and fairly difficult. If you put in the work and and study the squarecaps and ICA's you will be fine as most test questions are repeated. Overall I good professor, but the content is quite difficult
Love this guy
People say his accent is heavy, but it literally isn't. Sata is prob one of the nicest professors I've met. He also has a lot of office hours and TAs so if you have a question you'll basically always have someone to go to. Also, he has SO MANY opportunities for a grade boost, so even if you bomb your exams you'll still be alright.
Out of all 311C professors offered he is definitely the best. His tests are all based on his textbook which really covers each concept well so as long as you read that you're fine. There's also so much extra credit and drop grades to boost your grade. He does want you to end up with an A in his class. Also a very kind and caring person in general
I am three semesters removed from this course, yet I just had a literal nightmare a few days ago where I was taking one of his exams again. He made all of our extra credit worthless at the end of the semester by raising the point total needed for an A. He seems nice, but he is hustling his students by requiring HIS textbook and his SON's software!
I absolutely loved Dr. Sata. I particularly liked his lecture heavy teaching style and stayed easily engaged as my major is in a bio field. It is important to note that I took Ap Bio which I think makes a HUGE difference in how difficult you feel this class is. From my POV, I found it extremely manageable, 1-2 hrs of HW a week & test were not bad.
I enjoyed this class. I received C's on 2 exams and am still ending up with an A+ in the class! Just make sure to study for the final for at least 2 weeks and do all the extra credit opportunities.try to get full points on everything that isn't exam related, such as homework, squarecap , and worksheets! Dr. Sata is a very kind professor
Dr. Sata is probably one of the best professors for BIO311C! His textbook is very concise and has all the important information you need, and he has many TAs, old practice problems, and online resources to help you succeed. He gives a lot of extra credit and truly cares about his students learning the material. An A is doable if you put in the work
Lectures are a pain to sit through and felt like 40 minutes of word dumps. Attendance is taken with a squarecap quiz at the end of class. He gives a good amount of extra credit and replaces your lowest test score, but I did not enjoy this class or studying for it. He's nice but the tests have grammatical errors and he makes you buy his textbook.
Dr. Sata was great, and his exams are easy to prepare for with the resources and review sessions that he and his TAs provide. Bar a few curveballs, most of the questions were sourced from the mandatory Squarecaps (he uses these for attendance) and the HW assignments as well. The exams are w/o curve but he provides extra credit late in the semester.
Dr. Sata is a very kind man. His lectures were not very helpful, so I had to teach myself throughout the whole course through his textbook (which needs to be edited because there were SO many grammar mistakes). He has many resources, so use them! Extra credit is generous, multiple choice tests were good, so just be vigilant and you'll be fine.
He is clearly a sweet and caring professor who wants the students to succeed, but his lectures are at times confusing and the tests were difficult. His tests are detailed and he pulls everything from his textbook, so get ready to read it. The discussion section was required and unhelpful.
Light just study the Squarecaps and homeworks a lot for good practice most of the information you can just learn yourself from the textbook. EC later in the semester and midterms were really easy.
Dr. Sata is very passionate about biology and it shows through his lectures. I've found that you have to read the pre-lecture chapters from his textbook to fully understand what he talks about in lecture. Attendance isn't required, but you have daily squarecaps that count towards your grade so it basically is. Exams are questions from daily work.
He is really kind and understanding + gives a lot of extra credit to help boost grades! Square cap attendance that's tracked with wifi to make sure you're in class. Exams are hard, but reading the textbook and going over all the material will help
This was my hardest class since I taught myself ALL the material outside of class (never took AP Bio). His lectures are incoherent since he talks fast. His tests are double but I had to REALLY overstudy his textbook. He is very nice but his class was a pain. I got a 63 on the first test, but I ended the semester with a B+. Stay resilient!
He was a kind man, and he seems to care about his students, but the exams are so hard. The lectures don't seem to really help.
Beginning o the year, I won't lie I thought this would be my worst class but the professor is the cutest and a little pro-tip: probably over 70% of the tests are recycled in class Square Cap questions. If you study those, the tests aren't as bad as you'd think. Also, compared to other professors, very little homework. Definitely need to put in work
I knew any intro bio would be hard especially given I didn't take AP Bio. With it, I'd say you're pretty set but without, a bit more studying & time needs to be put in. Dr. Sata is such a nice guy, really wanting all of his students to succeed. He gives 5% EC at end of course and his exams are all repeat questions from the Squarecaps. Best to take.
