She provided the list of artworks to be studied and mostly we just had to memorize approximate dates, names, locations, materials, function, and culture from the textbook. Grading criteria was clear and she replied quickly with very helpful answers when emailed. I liked the course, maybe because I took it out of interest (not forced for my major).

Dr. Bauer is an interesting prof who seems to be really interested in art history, the only problem is that she doesn't know how to translate that into her teaching, so her teaching is good, but not great. The tests will be easy if you go to class and read the textbook. Some test questions can usually only be answered by what she says in lecture.

She definitely knows thoroughly her material and is passionate. The problem is that she cannot convey it properly. Her powerpoints are vague and disorganized. I followed the textbook's way of organizing the material and did fine.

Loved the course and Kaarina! She's so adorable, and so helpful. Her tests can be a little difficult, and you have to study hard for them. Make sure that you write down a lot of what she says in the lectures, as that is always what she tests on. Would recommend the textbook, and would totally take a course with her again!

I took this course as a GPA booster and it definitely did help. Kaarina is probably the nicest and best teacher I've had at UofC. Our tests were very easy (T or F, name of art) Going to class is sort of a must, but you could get notes off of the textbook as well. She changed format of the tests once she knew we were all struggling with a part.

Dr. Kaarina-Nancy Bauer is the best prof I had this winter. Her lectures might bore you, but she delivers it with passion and they are easy to follow through. Exams and assignments are easy as long as you read the textbook. Shes an easy marker and she is one of the professors I know who genuinely cares for their students. Totally the best!

Her lectures are crucial imo bc she goes over lots of info that aren't on slides, you can try to search for info but it might not be accurate to what she's teaching. There's 2 posters which are marked v easily if you write lots about the pieces and their connections. Midterm and final were v easy to go through and she's such a sweet lady.

Dr Bauer is an incredible professor - she is passionate about the material she teaches and about helping students to succeed. Assignments are interesting to research and allow for creativity, exams are 100 Qs - not difficult but you have to study the lecture material to succeed (a list of possible topics is provided ahead of time). Will take again!

Professor Bauer was very passionate about art history and gave amazing feedback on projects. However, her tests were awful. She only gave us 40 minutes to complete an online test that had 100 questions. On the other hand, she was open about her availability. She was also very flexible on deadlines as long as you submitted the assignments.

Very kind! Project examples were not useful, but projects are easy once expectations are understood. My class did poorly because many submitted both projects late and on the same day, so couldn't make use of feedback. Can also contact Bauer for feedback before submission. Skipping lectures is detrimental. Tough exams, but study guide provided.

Kaarina is very nice and super accommodating (especially with extensions). But do not take this class if you are looking for a GPA booster. I found her lectures/slides to be extremely unorganized and confusing. I missed one singular class and studied very hard the whole semester, and only got a 70% on the final. Super frustrating.

She is honestly great! Took this class as an elective. Mid-term and final exam is directly from her class lectures. Easy to say if you don't go to her class and take notes, it will be a difficult class. Relying on powerpoints only will not help on the exams.

Professor Bauer is one of the most caring professors I have encountered so far in my degree. She always thanks us for attending lectures and sincerely offers her help whenever needed. Extensions are available for every assignment in this course. Her passion for the content is demonstrated in her lectures, making them worth attending.

she's a nice person but this class was awful. for being an intro class, it was entirely too content heavy and difficult. the tests were impossible — 100 questions m/c and t/f based on the stupidest and smallest details of things. the only thing that saved my grade were the 2 research posters. i do NOT recommend this class.

Had Katarina for an intro class and also a 300 or 400 level ARHI class too. What a captivating, kind, and caring professor. I love Kaarina and her classes were so interesting. She is lovely!

materials are clear in what she is looking for but she talks about everything related to the artwork regardless if it is important to the tests or not so you have to pay attention to which parts are relevant but overall still doable if you know what you are looking for

A 90-minute, 150-question final exam sounds insane, but that's the reality of this course. Also, be prepared to lose your mind over a 100-question, 50-minute midterm.

As a science major, this was a fun and simple elective. Very flexible with deadlines and straightforward grading for each assignment; follow the rubric and its an easy 100. Definitely take notes on seemingly insignificant info during lectures and thoroughly memorize each piece (colours, location, stuff in the background, clothing, religion, etc.)

She is an amazing professor. I ended up taking her ARHI 203 class before ARHI 201, but this turned out to be one of the best classes I ever took. It was very fun to learn about all of the art pieces and she explains everything very well. As long as you pay attention to her lectures and take notes for each of them, you will do amazing.

My poor mark had ZERO to do with her. Dr. Bauer is generous with her time, flexible, loves her subject (especially Italian Renaissance), is well-travelled and multilingual. Final exam content was perfectly clear, giving examples of everything that could be tested. I gained an appreciation for styles and periods that I thought I did not like.

A very passionate and comprehensible professor. She truly knows her material and explains concepts better than most. That said, the assignments are extremely long and the exams rely heavily on memorization rather than visual learning, which is challenging for an art history course. This can deeply affect students' mental health.

Dr Bauer is a genuinely kind, caring and compassionate professor who is very clearly passionate about the topic she teaches. The lectures tend to be fairly long, but they are in-depth, well-organised and detailed. Tests are memory-based and simple, but can have some fairly tricky questions. Assignments are straightforward and easy.

Took this class online as an option. Lectures are eternal and content has to be separated through rants and actual contents valuable to the class. Online group project was a nightmare: so much reliance on other people which made me want to rip all my hair out. No grading rubric. If you have time and nerves, go ahead.

While helpful with questions after class, tests are made of 100+ multiple choice questions in 30 minutes with very niche topics. For the full hour and a half of her lecture, she is constantly talking, making it very hard to sift through what I actually need to learn and what is just her adding on. Got so burnt out by the end. Heavy option.

Dr. Bauer is very knowledgable in art history and has a dynamic teaching style that draws you in. I looked forever to all of her classes, despite the monotonous nature of the content. Halfway through the semester, the format changed to group presentation lectures which made the course very interesting if you are invested in the content.
