So essentially, he's a great guy, essentially very helpful, but his accent can be a bit tricky. And essentially, if you've had him, you'll understand it is essential to count the number of times he says "essential", as it is essentially astoundi
No Comments
Essentialy you are correct. Essentially... I counted 57 "Essentiallys" in one class. Essentially what a ****!
Yes, pretty good at teaching, but the accent can be a problem.
He is a responsible guy. It may take some time to get used to his accent and handwriting.
Really knows his stuff, and goes out of his way to help if you need it.
He was my lab instructor for 201 and was great. He was very helpful and very approachable when ever you had a question. He was very knowledgeable and clear in what he wanted and is also a very fair marker. I didn't find his accent or hand writing a problem though.
He seems like he knows alot about chemistry and I'm sure he makes a good first year chem prof, but he cant teach higher level chem for the life of him. theres too much notes to be taken and he knows it, yet does nothing about it. you cant ask questions as there is no time. He's monotoned and when the material is confusing its crap.his tests are bad
you have to know your stuff as well as the back of your hand to even hope to get above an 80% - too hard a marker when it came to seminars; this sentiment was echoed by MANY a first year chem students.
He's such a bad prof. I hated him & he made me hate chem as I have never done in my life. I knew my stuff very well & had to withdraw from that class because of him. Moreover going to his classes will make you no good if not confuses you more.
Look, some classes do take work. Go to class, and memorize/understand the topics and calculation problems in the notes(there aren'y many). It doesn't matter what anyone says his tests are straight forward, but you need to know the material. If ur willing to put in some work, its an A waiting to happen, but be sure to memorize the rxn's for the final
Anyone who says this guy is a bad teacher obviously doesn't listen in class. His notes are thorough, and he is ALWAYS available should you need help. He goes the extra mile to help his students. Anyone who fails CHEM 209, even without mahadev as a prof, either didn't go to classes or labs, or is damn near retarded.
learn too speak proper english man i cant friggen understand you. And you goo soo fast. and dont explain properly.
talks really fast and doesnt give much time to write down the notes before he moves on to talking about the next topic! his writing is hard to read sometimes as well. the class is more taught like a review so unless u read and understand everything bfore lectures its super easy to get lost...didnt learn anything from the lectures..
Mahadev could be the worst prof that I have had at this school he is extremely condescending to students, should be avoided at all costs.
The prof knows his stuff and is fairly thorough. He does, however, go way too fast for how bad his writing is. He likes to use two overheads: he'll throw up a diagram on one overhead and then, while you're trying to copy it down, proceed to write new stuff on the other overhead. All while you're trying to decipher his horrible writing.
He has really good notes. The problem is he talks really fast at the same time you're trying to hurry and write the notes and a lot of his talking is pertaining to his notes trying to explain them! Overall, I don't think I would use Dr. Mahadev again.
Very easy course if you are interested in orbitals, trends and reasons for those trends in the periodic table, intro quantum mechnaics, etc. However, he is an idiot cauze he does not consider 84.8% as an A, cauze an A is 85%, which is what you get when you round off 84.8%. I wish I had a chance to review my final, as I can't get over this blunder.
Omg, I had him as a prof. in the summer time. And he goes so fast. He has an accent, I couldn't even understand him. Avoid him.
Horrible prof for a horrible class. Class Average was 50.8% You do the math
Way to many notes, if you're 2 minutes late you've missed atleast two slides of notes. You can never get an answer out of him for a question it's either "It won't be on the midterm" or "I'm kind of busy right now." He was also a bad TA in my 203 tutorials. Tests are hard and he marks them hard.
Mahadev is a jerk.
Mahadev gives clear and concise notes, just make sure that you get to class ON TIME. He goes extremely fast and you will be writing the whole time. However, he's not great to go to for extra help, every time I went he made me feel like I was stupid :-( (Which apparently I wasent, I got an A in the course).
He is the classic example of what a prof should not be. He's arrogant, it really seems that he doesn't care about students and if they learn anything.
Unclear, careless, too fast, learn more from the textbook, Horrible class average in everything. Going to another school to repeat this terrible course with a terrible prof.
He has powerpoints that he flips through extremely fast (but he won't give you the powerpoints), he always refers you to the text if you don't get things copied down fast enough (however there are 5 suggested text books). NO PARTIAL MARKS.
Ridiculous. An embarassment to the U of C. He was rude to students, didn't show up to appointments, didn't answer questions effectively, and made it seem like it's all our fault when we do bad on his tests. I can't believe tuition costs so much when the quality of instruction is this poor!
Do not take this class with this professor!! Going to this class made me absolutely HATE chemistry and i had to drop the class. This professor is impossible to understand. He has a very heavy accent. The content of the course is already hard enough. He is the reason i am switching out of the facaulty of Science. Stay away from Mahadev!!!!
He may be slightly hard to understand at times (English is not every profs first language!) but he maintains professionalism and I felt that he taught the material fairly. No surprises on any of the exams. Lab component is not bad either, but TA's either mark unfair and biased, or just give away 90% regardless. Ok course overall.
How he still manages to keep his job I don’t know because he’s terrible. I don’t mind the fact that he has an accent, however I do mind the fact that he doesn’t even TRY to be a good teacher! He is rude to students.I really think his time as a professor should be over.
Mahadev is awful. His accent is ridiculously thick and he can't pronounce simple words (especially ones with "h" or "etch" as he says). He's ridiculously bad at teaching concepts and has a strange attraction to Harry Potter. I am extremely displeased with this class.
Chem is easy for me, and the class isn't difficult...however Dr. Mahadev is stubborn to his own mistakes and cannot under any terms control the class. His technological abilities are a laugh!!!!!! He has no understanding of the CPS system or of the power point. I believe he teaches for himself and not for the PAYING STUDENTS!!
Horrible professor. He is a better course director however as this year the course improved a lot in its content. Treats you like you're stupid and weren't paying attention to him if you ask a question. Does not teach you everything you need to know for an exam. Totally killed all interest I had in chemistry from high school.
Very difficult to understand, taught myself through the textbook, which is great, but he is almost useless. Not recommended.
At first it's a little hard to understand him because of his accent and because he's quiet, but if you sit towards the front of the class it's not too bad. He explains things about as well as chem concepts can be explained in the short period of time. He's really approachable and tries to find ways to keep the class interesting (songs and videos)
i loved mahadev!! he was the best chem prof i ever had:D
He is hard to understand at first but once you get past the language barrier he is amazing. Go to his office and he helps you till you get it.
I DON'T KNOW ABOUT THE REST OF YOU GUYS BUT I THOUGH MAHADEV WAS AN AMAZING PROF!! The only reason why I would believe people would have a hard time with is just his accent. If you sit in the first 3 4 rows you will hear him perfectly fine =). Did amazing on the final and that's cause i actually asked him for help! Some should do the same! Amazing!
hes not a bad teacher but his accent is pretty hard to understand. his notes arent that bad but you defs need to read the textbook. he also needs to have more control over the class my lecture was very noisy.
Lets see...heavy accent, boring lectures, can't teach the material good enough, might as well teach yourself from the book. Definitely can't control the class volume, he'll just wait until you're done talking. Pointed out a student who was whispering,he literally went up the stairs to his row and handed him the mic, told him to teach the class.
Mahadev's teachings are not comparable with other professors in the school. Each class you sit there for 5 minutes watching a video or a song on youtube, time well wasted. The examples and diagrams he provides in the lecture slides are exactly from the textbook, therefore reading the textbook puts you ahead of the game. Overall, don't get Mahadev
do not recommend...watching youtube videos the first 5 minutes of the class...read your textbook!
He is extremely rude. Teach yourself for exams. I didn't dare touch my slides he gives us on BB. Useless
His exams are so hard, completely opposite of what he teaches in the class.
Mahadev is impossible to understand. To even get an idea of what he's saying you have to sit front row. Even then the class is so loud you can hear him anyway. I learned this whole class from the textbook and other profs notes.
This man is dead boring, unenthusiastic and incomprhensible. A chronic mumbler, always sit close to the front if you're going to come to class at all. Read the textbook because you will most likely be learning everything from there anyways.
His accent is so thick and his mic is always echoing so much you can hardly understand a word this man says. His exams are super hard. Learn everything from the text, the lecture notes don't help. If you can, take chem 203 with one of the other instructors. And don't worry about being late, the first 5 mins of class are devoted to YouTube.
Not the greatest prof but a pretty nice guy. He's got a pretty thick accent and his lectures are nothing spectacular but he's fairly approachable and more helpful outside of class. The first test was a joke but the next two were much harder. Make sure you get the text because you'll need to teach yourself quite a bit.
Mahadev was quite bad. Don't understand why the institution still lets him teach. Just look at all the ratings of him, from like 6 years ago he was bad. Don't let him teach, ruining students dreams> i.e. those who cannot go to med school no more. His notes, were too simple. Then the final and 2nd midterm was brutal. Gave hardest examples on exam
I actually didn't mind him. He was a little hard to understand but nothing too awful, and I found his notes to be decent. I wouldn't recommend him but if you get stuck with him it's not the end of the world - I finished the class with an A- and cracked my textbook open once all semester.
Power point notes are horrible as you need to fill them in but prof is incomprehensible. I attended all lectures but learned everything from the textbook.
He might be hard to understand, but thats because he couldnt control the class. With kids talking while he was talking, of course you wouldnt be able to hear him. His notes were great! You had to fill them in, but that helped me pay attention rather than zone out. If you attend class he'll tell you what to focus on for the final which is helpful
NOT. GOOD. AT. ALL. Not a good teacher, not a very friendly person.
I did not find his lectures helpful or engaging, and the sole reason for my attendance was because of the clicker questions for credit. I taught myself everything out of the textbook, and the textbook was amazing since all of his lecture notes are just taken from the text.
my textbook was my best friend.
Lecture was useless to me,never used the notes to study. Learned everything from the textbook. but overall,a nice and approachable guy.
Just the worst! Huge accent, terrible notes, and awful explanations. Good thing I had the textbook...
In my opinion, I found his lectures easy to follow, probably because CHEM 203 is basically the same course as CHEM 30 (a high school prereq). Perhaps that had something to do with the ease I had in this class. His lecture notes were very well organized (better than my Chem 201 notes), but like any Chem course the tests were brutal.
He is very boring to listen to and so I tuned out in every class and ended up teaching myself from the textbook. I was grateful that the textbook we use is nicely written. The first exam was super easy. They get harder though and the final exam is the hardest.
A really great guy. His english is improving, and he will always help you with anything if you ask nicely.
He is rude and insensitive. His lectures are boring and redundant. I'm a science major and this is probably the worse science course I've taken. I attended all his lecture but did most of my studying from the textbook even while in his lecture. He is also not very helpful. He's a hard marker, but with work you can manage a grade above B.
Decent Prof. His lectures can be bit dry. But covers materials in comprehensive way. And the clicker questions help alot. The exam is not easy for sure, but it is fair.
Mahadev's teaching skills are poor and he cannot seem to explain lecture material in an accessible manner. His clarifications are rudimentarty and he does not explain the basics of chemistry 203 in any depth.
He has a slight accent making some of what he says difficult to understand but overall it's not that bad. His lectures are somewhat dull as he reads off of the powerpoint a lot. Overall not a bad professor.
Dr.Mahadev wasn't that bad, I personally liked his lecture notes, sometimes filling in the blanks were hard because he went fast and never posted the full set which was irritating. I found the textbook and outside sources helped a little more than him but overall he wasn't awful.
Not a very good prof! He doesn't explain the course very well, assumes that you know chemistry because he does. Not very pleasant to talk to if you have questions and unhelpful!
Not helpful at all! He never worked out the questions with us, rather just posted the answer and moved on way too fast. Did not care about questions and was rude to those who came in for help. Read the textbook and review Chem 30 and you will be fine.. just do not rely on his help!!
Dr. Mahadev really wasn't that bad. He showed how to do problems, not always explaining his ways albeit. He may not be the most helpful prof, but that's what TAs are for. Fair marker, explains his marking when you ask him.
I really didn't like his teaching methods. I have a hard time learning with the use of powerpoints which he basically copied from the book and just read aloud. He's alright, but you need to teach yourself quite a bit.
Not very good. Goes too fast and his powerpoint slides are just copied from the textbook. I found it better to go teach myself from the textbook in the library. Nice guy who cares about his student's success though
Doesn't provide enough time to answer TopHatMonacle questions. Doesn't always understand when a student approaches with a problem.
His notes are long and repetitive. Marking guidelines are also very strict. He is unapproachable and comes off as rude.
If you have him switch out while you can. He is the worst professor I have ever had. He assumes you know the things he is teaching and doesn't explain at all. He doesn't teach half the things he should. He is unapproachable and is rude when you ask him for help. Save yourself a fail.
You will definitely have to have your textbook with you. He is not very organized. He goes through slides really fast and doesn't give you enough time to answer Top Hat Monocle questions. He flips back and forth throughout the slide show so you spend some time trying to figure out what slide you are on. Lectures are very boring.
Not clear at all. Spends a lot of time on irrelevant things and then doesn't bother explain the things you need to know. Textbook is a must.
Terrible professor. He doesn't give enough time to answer Top Hat Monocle Questions. He doesn't go through enough examples and the examples he does go through he blows through them like a hurricane. Textbook is 10000 times more helpful and is very much needed if you want to pass this class with a good mark. He answers questions by going in circles.
Below average professor. Goes over questions but doesnt like to explain them, rather hard to understand his lectures. When asked a question, he will ususally makes it more confusing for the student. However he is a fairly nice person.
He is a nice guy, but thats the nicest thing i have to say about him. Calling him a bad professor would be too generous. He can not teach. Period. Save yourself do not pick him as your prof.
So far, he's the worst professor i had in uni. He has an accent so its hard to understand him and he's not clear about whats he's teaching and powerpoint notes aren't that useful.
He's really bad at giving notes and he is lost most of the time. He doesn't let you leave the class once you enter.
By far the worst teacher for providing knowledge. He has no ability to teach, it is shocking that he is this bad and is allowed to remain at the U of C.
Unclear with subject matter. Insists on question being answered, and will wait until they are answered, wasting considerable amounts of class time. Terrible at answering questions. Monotonous, making classes boring, especially since mine were at 8am. Wastes time on review material (ie stoich), and very briefly explains new material.
Super nice guy and wants the best for his students, but his accent is very hard to understand and the class is very hard to stay focused in as he is very monotone and wastes a lot of time waiting for answers that nobody knows. Also can be very confusing in explanations of concepts
I don't know why this prof has such bad reviews! He's really nice, goes through problems step-by-step and his notes are clear and organized. I personally didn't find his accent hard to understand, and I am never confused with what he was saying. Liked this class a lot
Honestly, he's a good prof, his accent is not hard to understand whatsoever, at least to me. But he teaches the material well and he knows what he is talking about. So at least that's what I personally think.
Not the most useful course coordinator! Not very pleasant to deal with, and refuses to post answers to practise exams like all other chem profs do!
His notes are good, as long as you show up to class and fill in the blanks. But on the other hand, don't even bother trying to listen to him, he is awful at explaining concepts if you can even understand him.
He is OK prof. Dull to listen to. Material is straightforward but there is a lot of it. Rushed through the last part of the course.
He is OK prof. Dull to listen to but is clear enough. Material is straightforward but there is a lot of it. Rushed through the last part of the course.
does many top hat monacle questions, on a timer so you dont have time to submit answers. goes over the answers and skips steps so you wont understand. Takes class silence as laziness instead of realizing we need help and scolds us for it, wasting 20 minutes at a time. notes are just mass knowledge and dont help at all
Words cannot describe how inept this prof is. Dull, hard to understand, weak and confusing notestemplates. Also doesn't care about students. Started as a full lecture section and eventually 13 - 23 of students either dropped it or stopped showing up. I'm assuming the way most people will survive will be due to the bell curve. Avoid all costs!
His lecture slides are relatively useless and it can be quite difficult to understand him. He expects too much of his students and explains important concepts way too quickly. The textbook will be your best friend. Overall, I would not recommend him.
Be prepped to work hard in the class. But Kal is a really nice guy and does his best to make sure his students understand things. But oh dear prepare for lab reports that take hours upon hours.
poor lecturer
You can tell that Mahadev knows the material extremely well, but he delivers it TERRIBLY. Lecture notes suck. I went to prep sessions, had a tutor and worked my butt off for the final and it was just BAAAAAAD. Everyone hates the class.
Lectures are long, slow and grating. English is not his first language and his speech patterns are aggravating. Lecture slides consist of tophat questions that don't show an answer or how to arrive at an answer at all. 1010 would have changed my entire schedule to avoid being in his lecture
Very hard to understand in lecture. Difficult top hat questions, does not allow much time to work out answers; expects students to know answer immediately, becomes frustrated if we don't. Notes are subpar, disorganized. Your textbook is your best friend if you take this course with him. Nice person, but Would not recommend him as a prof.
Dr. Mahadev is very knowledgeable and is very clear on the content. Because of the simple nature of this course, some topics may become repetitive, however, this makes the lectures very informative. The group projects are research based and the grading is fair. Exams are also graded fairly; as long as you know the material you will do well.
