Professor Staub is Fantastic! She is a sweetheart and really helps you out if you go to her office hours. She is clear in her presentation of the information, and her testing format is fair. She also seems to truly care for the success of her students, and encourages us to participate in class. I would recommend professor Staub to any Eco Student!
Come to my office hours is her line.
She says "um" all the time
She is very nice and helpful. She gets nervous sometimes but it's understandable as it's her first year teaching.
Absolutely the worst prof I have had this year. Behind on syllabus, not clear, better off learning from book than staying in lecture. Test usually revolves around one long question, either you know it or you don't. Overall don't recommend
Her tests are easy, it's all textbook stuff, so just make sure you read it, and understand it by yourself, 'cause when stuff gets harder she gets confused and doesn't teach that well, your textbook is the way to success. Since it's her first year teaching i wouldnt say anything bad 'cause everyone's gonna be nervous teaching for the first time.
Smart person, not a good teacher.
Great prof but confuses the class a lot. Hate that tablet she uses cuz it never works. spend most of the time trying to fix that dumb technology
This prof won't be able to answer any of your questions- she doesn't seem to know the material very well but the test WILL be SUPER hard! Her lecture style is horrible...its so slow- she keeps using fill in the blanks for lecture notes- you won't learn anything in her lectures or tutorials
Very inconsistent testing and teaching style. Everything on her slide is word for word in textbook but textbook does a better job at explaining. She can be very confusing and seems to make up for all the confusion in her "office hours." Besides all of this, I'd wish she had been more organised and efficient. Nice person, but poor teaching
very nice person, but bad at teaching and explaining things. majority of the lecture notes are word to word from the textbook. sometimes confuses you by explaining more.
Professor Staub is a nice person but not a good professor. Goes through the content too slowly and then rushes prior to a test to try and catch up. Tests include one SA that is focused mostly on one concept only. Will definitely be avoiding her in my upper year classes and would not recommend taking this course with her.
Easy 4.0 Just read the book, her lectures are useless
Professor Staub is wonderful. She explains the material very well. Unfortunately the majority of the class doesn't pay much attention during class, and prefer texting or talking with one another to engaging in the lecture, and their marks reflect it. Honestly her tests are a joke. Unfortunately so are most of her students. She ought to be stricter
Nice person, horrible prof. Does not know how to teach, unorganized. EVERYTHING she teaches in class is exactly from the textbook, but the book does a much better job than her. In our final exam, she kept changing numbers and questions in our exam like she never checked the paper before, interrupted us at least 10 times during the exam.
Loved this prof. Pretty fair and her weekly online quizzes and tutorials are very helpful. Will definitely consider taking her other courses.
BEST PROF EVER
Not much great of a prof. Pretty confusing, all over the place. She cant finish her lectures on time. Not to mention her course was theory based rather than math based. As for which her TAs were pretty garbage too, they couldn't help, explain, give clarity.
She cant explain. Very confusing.
I like her bc i got A from her class. :) but seriosly i cant understand bad comments about her. She is pretty good on her job. I mean there are many old profs at utm but many of them are tired of teaching. Prof staub is hungry to teach. She is dynamic. That is why i like her. I will definetly get her other classes again.
I met her out of school one day. She apologized for her class and how bad (not bad per say but I can't think of a better term at the moment) her class and exam was. It was her first year and she experimented, and my mark took the brunt of her experimentation and inexperience. Albeit good and nice prof, but she isn't yet. I would've done better...
The bestest!
Not the best in teaching. Quizzes every week was a pain but fairly simple, and so are her tests. The tutorials ask you to do one thing and the test just ask the opposite. It's easy to prepare for them. However, the exam was a mess, there was a question that was unsolvable that alot of people spent time on it and she ends up saying to cross it out
dont bother taking her class, take baileys and learn something
I would avoid her at all costs, she doesn't explain the math portion of the concepts so when the test comes everyone loses it
She doesn't post solutions to tutorial activities or practice problems, ALWAYS has some sort of mistake on her tests and disrupts students during it, and is just overall a bad teacher, she can't explain content clearly, she seems confused herself while teaching.....
Going to class is definitely necessary.
She is a very enthusiastic professor. She consistently send out e-mail summarizing what she has discussed on class every weekend. Her tests are basically base on tutorial activities' worksheets, so do study those thoroughly. For the online quizzes on MyEcoLab, it is quite useful for she doesn't put MC questions on the tests.
Not very helpful. Terrible lectures, lecture notes are almost useless.
Lecture notes are useless compared to the material we are tested on.
You can do well in Professor Staub's class if you do the practice problems and tutorial activities. She is quite confusing and does not provide answers to practice problems and she barely helps. The textbook didn't help at all. I still managed to get an A in her class by doing practice problems and tutorial activities.
if you don't go to tutorials and lectures you're screwed
Gets distracted easily, if the technology doesnt work shell spend too much time trying to fix it. Lectures can be confusing, doesnt give answers to practice problems or tutorials.
A Professor with extremely bad teaching skills, she tries hard but class always ends up losing attention. Fails in responding to questions and always answers with i will get back to you. Try to avoid at all times.
This prof really cares about student learning.
Would spend much time trying to get technology to work if it isnt. Lectures are confusing didnt do well on tests even though understood course work, doesnt give answers to practice problems or tutorials. Will wait for everyone to be quite and will go over lecture.
Panjoth Kuthi si. Legit didnt know how to teach. Ruined the whole class over.
I thought Staub was a great professor. A lot of people complain about the difficulty of the class but as long as you do the assignments and go to class, you'll be fine. She gives out lecture notes that make it really easy to follow along in class. If you study for the exams, getting an A on them is very doable.
Thick with 2 Cs
Honestly just don't take her class. She is the worst professor I have ever had. She doesn't actually teach. During class she puts us into breakout rooms so that we can teach each other the material that we had to learn from reading the textbook. With exam she gives us practice exams and then the actual exam has none of the information that we learn
Professor Staub is a very nice woman. Truly. She is a horrible teacher. She gives the class four total projects which you will pretty much have to re-do (each one). This is an entire class thing. People rarely pass these projects. You also have one midterm and a final that are insanely hard. Coding project at the end you HAVE to do if you want an A
DONT TAKE DONT TAKE DONT TAKE OMGOMGOMGOMG NOOOO
Genuinely worst experience in my life with a teacher, please save yourself whatever it takes and find another way to get credit, she gets her rate my professor taken down every so often because her rating is always so bad.
It's not the end of the world if you have to take this professor, but she has absolutely no interest in helping you, and you will be doing most of the learning on your own. You're gonna have to grind pretty hard to just pass the class, and the midterms are tricky. Good luck

Here are some stats from my class' (300+ people) midterm: avg score: 69%; minimum: 19.6%; on both the MCQ and SAQ separately, at least one 0%. Not sure why these are statistics Staub is even broadcasting, because clearly with an avg that low and a median of 72%, the students are not at fault. I can't believe she is even allowed to teach this class.
I am taking her at University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, and all I can say is I have never felt worse about myself leaving a classroom ever in my life. DO NOT TAKE
If you don't have a religion get one and start praying…
i was a stubborn weed, but clearly not stubborn enough.
she does not properly teach her students. i dont know anything.
Everybody hates on Professor Staub. I thought she was a good professor. She taught the material well and wasn't necessarily mean. It's just a big class, and it's a hard class, so people hate on her.
I am taking her right now in chapel hill, and let me just say there is a reason why her page doesn't exist for UNC... I cannot stress enough that this class will tear your confidence and worth to the ground. I am spending 15+ hours a week and my grade has had no improvement, in fact I did worse on her second midterm, the average was a 60. DONT TAKE
Kalina Staub is quite literally the worst professor I have ever laid my eyes on.She shows no compassion when making it easier for her students, and deliberately engages in practices that make it harder for them. The most memorable thing that you'll gain from her class is the constant desire for self-harm and living in regret for an entire semester.
Absolute worst prof I've had at UNC. Difficult to follow in lectures and does not really enjoy answering questions. There's a fair amount of outside help you can get. Crazy amounts of work every week and having to pre-study for every lecture is a lot on top of it. She doesn't care about her students. Her exams are so stressful and full of tricks.
Knows her content, but struggles to teach it. Did not learn anything from lectures, had to rely on outside help. Takes points off for silly things, disorganized (incorrect answer keys), and plays tricks on you instead of just testing the content. She seems like a nice person outside of lectures, but I would avoid this class.
Lectures arent great, often overcomplicates topics. Learned everything on my own. Course had constant errors (in answer keys, etc). Seems like a nice person, but isnt a great teacher. Theres a lot of resources provided with the course to help you prepare for exams, which is good. Avoid if you can but not the absolute worst. If you try youll be fine
UNC prof; I had a fair bit of econ knowledge beforehand, which helped with my performance in the class. I completely understand the criticisms, especially with the amount of assignments that felt like busywork. I found managing the many due dates much harder than the midterms. Ultimately, this is a weed out class that I found tedious but tolerable.
BRO THIS CLASS IS SO DUMB IM GNA FMEFAJHEOFJAWEOFIJAPWE-FPIFUJOIEW SHE LITERALLY MAKES 80 PERCENT OF UR GRADE PURELY JUST EXAMS AND THEN THE OTHER PROFESSORS GAVE U AN AUTOMATIC A IF YOU GOT AN85 ON THE MIDTERMS AND ITS VIRTUALLY IMP;OSSIBLKE TO GET AN A IN THIS STUPID CLASS IF YOU HAV E THIS JS DROP OUT BECUASE YOUR GPA WONT LET YOU GRADUATE AFTER
This is the worst professor or teacher I have ever had in my life. DO NOT take this class with her, trust me.
Pretty sure she had her other one on the actual UNC page taken down because of how bad her ratings were. If you can avoid taking her class, do it. It will tank your grade. Only class I got less than an A in. It's NOT WORTH IT. Not sure why UNC hasn't replaced her yet. Also she's mean for no reason. She's not the kind of prof you want to get to know
This class is awesome if you want to take a bath with a toaster.
I genuinely think she's not as bad as people say. There's definitely a lot of work but that doesn't make her evil! She gives you all the resources you need to succeed, many people just choose not to use them and complain instead.
This is the worse class I have ever taken. I spend more time doing work for this class than all my other classes combined and I still have a C... I have A's in all my other classes. Please pray for me, my final grade will depend on my final exam and that's going to be worth 50% of my grade since I did horrible on my second midterm.
I took this class because I thought I wanted to be an econ major. The concepts are not that hard and I really understood the material. She's actually not bad at explaining things, but the homework is terrible and the lectures are a snooze fest. She's not as bad as the reviews may seem but the structure of the course as a whole is what sucks. ):
She is genuinely not as bad as people say. Extremely accessible outside of class and offers help sessions/office hours almost everyday of the week. There is a lot of homework but it is manageable and helped me prepare for the tests. The class is difficult because there is a lot of content covered but if you put in the effort you will do fine.
She really is not that bad. I think most people just are not ready to accept they are closer to average once they're in UNC. There is a lot of homework, granted you can elect not to do it and add the weight to your tests, so I don't think it's that much of an issue. Overall she's fine, nothing super special. The TA's are extremely helpful.
This class made me interested in majoring in econ and I actually liked it more than I thought. Dr. Staub is very communicative, and even though the class is time-consuming, I used the mock schedule she has on Canvas, which helped a lot. She's also very accessible and easy to ask for help during office hours and coffee chats she holds very often.
She is condescending, rude, and doesn't care about the students taking her class.
Dr. Staub seriously is not as bad as people say. She made several helpful resources available and made it very possible for students to succeed. The exams were challenging, but fair. The TAs, ULAs & help sessions were super helpful. ECON101 is challenging with any professor, taking it with Dr. Staub isn't any worse than other UNC Econ professor.
Take this class with McDonna or take it at your local community college. Lectures are difficult to understand and the homework is very rigorous if you want to get by. The questions on the tests are also far more difficult than any practice.
Staub is nowhere near the monster many people claim her to be. In reality, she is an acceptable professor who teaches the fundamentals of economics sufficiently. She gives students all the information through the lectures, but you have to make a conscious effort to study and understand the content on a deeper level than what is initially taught.
Just be prepared to do the work that she assigns. If you don't do the work or reading you won't do well but if you do you should be able to pass the class. She gives a LOT of work and people don't expect that from a 101 class. She is organized and sticks to her syllabus and has consistent structure.
Staub really isn't bad. She gives lots of homework (some of which is busywork), but it's actually pretty helpful since you're learning so much content you need to review regularly or you'll get lost. She's very accessible outside of class and gives you many opportunities to ask questions. Seriously, just do the readings, and you'll be fine.
Class average was a B- and B median. Exams are fair but are 70% of your grade. No curve and minimal extra credit (2/60 points back on exam). I did not use the textbook/ do any readings and was okay, mostly utilised practice exams and Staub's other resources. Lots of resources to practice, guided notes, and helpful recitations.
Dr. Staub is nice, she even speaks French and is willing to help during office hours. However, she gives so many assignments, and it is very overwhelming. The midterms and final were very hard. She gives many tricky questions, even though she says she will not. This made the exams stressful and confusing. PLS SAVE YOUR GPA DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
