Wow, I have never seen a prof at UMBC be this clear and upbeat. Even though the semester just started, I am glad I took his class. His lectures are clear, homeworks are straight from the book(with the answer at the back, just show work) and he helps very well when you visit his office. I am hoping his exams are easy too. If they are, he is perfect!
i can't blame him for my bad grades but the quizzes and exams are near impossible. the fact that my korean TA sucks at teaching and then follows up with strict grading is not rubbing me the right way. great professor, horrible class
Nanes is friendly one on one. It's evident he likes math, but he goes 100 miles an hour without clearly explaining the details of what he is doing. He thinks we are at his level, so he teaches at his level and not at ours. His tests are deliberately much harder than anything we do in class. I guess this class is supposed to build character.
His lectures are engaging, explains content and encourages questions. Appears friendly, but has a tone of he's god and you're an idiot. Tests are graded and written to try to fail students, even said they're intentionally extra hard. 1st exam class average 62% and whole class was left at the time limit. Tests like students are math professionals.
The class was easy. His quizzes are not hard, just show your work.
He goes wayyy too fast, he literally just runs through all the material then he stops and asks if we have questions. He's a great nice guy but not a great teacher. Take Tighe or someone more experienced if you can. Also his lectures are just him re-writing and re-doing all the examples in the textbook. Not really all that helpful.
If you have a PHD in math then you should have no trouble keeping along. Otherwise take someone else. He runs through the material like it's a race, then pauses and asks for questions as your still scrambling to write down what he wrote on the board in his terrible handwriting. Don't bother with his section unless you have to.
Though he may go fast, he explains things at a very clear level. I think what trips people up is the speed, rather than the clarity of his teaching. He obviously cares for the material and explains it in a much easier sense than does the book, so he does help there. Overall, not a bad teacher at all.
First exam average was a 60%..yeah you get the picture. One of those professors that takes pride in taking an already difficult subject and making it almost impossible. Avoid.
Very good professor! Be prepared to work hard on this class. He moves quickly through material. If you don't understand something, visit his office hours. He is excellent at addressing your questions and concerns and does not begrudge a minute of his time.
Kalman Nanes is a good professor as long as you try your best. I always went to his office hours and he answered whatever questions I had. His test are difficult but as long as you try hard and care about the class than you will do well. He likes it when they see that their students are working hard.
The hardest class I've taken at UMBC so far. His lectures cover way too much ground to fully grasp all at once. Unless you can go to his office hours, you have to teach yourself the material. The book is more confusing than Nanes is. Unfortunately, there are few better choices for Calc 2 at UMBC. Expect a semester of headaches.
Very good at teaching the material, but be prepared to do speed calculus on tests and quizzes.
You'll do okay on the quizzes then be in for a real shocker on the exams. His lectures are extremely fast and the tests are hard and on questions you haven't seen before.
Great professor. Yes the class is hard, so put effort in to it and you will pass. The quizzes are harder than the tests, but the homework is the hardest. If you get the homework you will do fine. If you have issues talk to him he really wants you to succeed.
He has high expectations in homework, but the understanding of the material you gain from his course is unmatched. Don't be lazy, and this will be the best course you take this semester.
Great guy, but needs to understand he's teaching a 100- level math, not graduate math. Course material is hard enough, but he beats you down with the workload. Very smart, but teaches too fast. I really could have done better if I wasn't so buried under the workload and could actually learn the material
Great Teacher!!!! Loved him even though he doesn't curve a class. By far the hardest class I've ever taken. He is always willing to help. Love this guy so much...and he's cute!
I have no idea what the heck the low raters did. This teacher is unbelievably helpful and clear. His exams are easy and he hands out many bonus points if the class does bad. Seriously, exams come straight from the friggin homework, which he explains the answers to when you ask IN CLASS! He isn't arrogant or rude. Do not fear him. Genuine A+ guy.
One of the worst professors I have ever had the misfortune of having. Currently retaking with Tighe.
No need for the book because you'll transcribe the entire thing from the board by the end the semester. By the test time you are expected to have jedi-mastered the material and the grading is tough. His explanations are circular and of type "I'll let you think about it," or "that is a great example to workout on your own". Nice guy; Bad teacher.
A really great guy, and is always there to help his students with his office hours and castle thing he has going on, but you get 35-50 hw problems each week that are much more harder than what you covered in class and his exams have much harder questions than what he did in class too. He puts up reviews w/ answers though, which are a bit helpful.=/
I don't know why he's getting bad ratings. Nanes is a great professor. He moves a little fast, but if you ask him to slow down he will. What he puts on the board is what he puts on the test. He's very helpful as well. Great teacher.
The class was not that hard. I skipped 3 worksheets and a quiz, and many classes but just read on my own and worked hard and got an A. The worksheets are most difficult, then quizzes are easier, and exams are the easiest. I have no idea why the class was doing so bad, but it was really basic stuff we had to learn and apply.
He's a great guy very nice and approachable, but he moves very fast during class. It's always a challenge keeping up with what he writes on the board. The tests are very hard. Quizzes aren't so bad. I never skip class, always do well on quizzes, but fail on tests. If you take him be prepared to be confused.
I don't think I've ever met a professor who is more dedicated to helping his students succeed, or a nicer person. If you can, go to his office hours. His door is almost always open and he is an even better teacher one on one. Be sure to read the textbook - it's actually a good book and you'll learn a lot from the readings.
Solid Professor. Very clear. We were the guinea pigs for his new teaching style this semester. I'd have to say it was a resounding success. Go to the CASTLE study session and do the practice exams.
Amazing professor. This was my first math class in 5 years, and he made it very easy to understand. Super approachable, always positive, and cares about his students. Very reasonable. Our class was the trial TBL class, and I must say it was very well plotted and executed. Exams are fair, but the true/false questions will make you cry.
Completely useless. The concepts in the book are hard to understand so when he "teaches" you in class, it's just as pointless as the book. He's not a bad guy, but his teaching style sucks and it's a Team Base learning style where you work in groups. I would of rather took it with another professor than this one. Don't waste your time.
Hardest Math professor. He does not teach anything yet expects you to learn from "Teams" and grades you based on what your team averages. If you ask him a question he is helpful but he will never teach the material in class. He just forces you to rely on the book or outside sources. Avoid him if possible.
Dr. Nanes expects students to learn material outside of class from a book that is rather confusing, but he does a great job of teaching the material in class. He cares about his students and answers questions and promptly responds to email. He expects a lot out of his students but the course is fair and reasonable. Definitely recommended.
Awesome prof, explains things in a way that I can understand, posts lectures/exam keys/etc online for review. Exams/quizzes check you understand the concept, not complicated problems. Would definitely recommend for a person like me who struggles with Calc.
Dr. Nanes is amazing!! He is a great teacher and he is so helpful if you go to office hours. The class is a little tough and he has high expectations for his students but he does not leave you in the dark if you need help.
One of the best teachers I have had. NOT an easy A. Be prepared to spend a lot of time outside of class doing the work. Prof Nanes is a hard ass in a good way. He is funny at times and cares about all his students and will sit with you and help you understand the material. If you come to class, have a good attitude and do the HW, you will do well.
Least helpful prof ever and at umbc that's saying something
Nanes is the best. I gained more knowledge in his class than in any other. There is work to do most days of the week in this class and while it might seem annoying it really gets you prepared, which is very necessary to succeed in this class. I wish I had him for my previous math courses. involves teamwork but you would have to study the textbook
This is the first time he's taught this class at umbc, so he didn't have any practice exams but when I had him for 152 he had them for each test. Doing well with Nanes isn't easy necessarily but if you do poorly in his class it's 100% your fault.
Good professor. Very helpful. His group teaching style is interesting and helpful if you get a decent team but will suck if you get a useless group.
Very helpful and adds a lot of clarity to the readings. Posts notes online as well as reading guides, homework and quiz/exam keys which are all very helpful for studying.
He knows what he's talking about. Gives students ample resources for fairly difficult material. His class is by no means easy, but if you try, you will leave 301 with an excellent understanding of the material. (i.e. take 301 with Nanes.)
Had him for all 3 calc classes. Very hard exams only cuz he wants you to show you actually understand the material, and has extra credit on all of them. the final exams are typically very easy except the calc 2, which had a 20 point curve. lectures arent the best but is very helpful 1 on 1 and really cares for his students. do book problems!!!!
I've had the pleasure of taking math 151,221,251 and 301 all with Dr.Nanes. He truly is one of the best professors I've had and I consider him to be a good friend and mentor. He's a geek at heart and he cares so much about teaching. The one thing to remember is there isn't any substitute for hard work. Always show him effort and improvement.
Nanes is very interested in helping students, but only if they seek help. Go to the Math Gym if you don't understand something. Take his practice exams - they're often very similar to the real exams. Do the "suggested" homework to do well on quizzes.
Definitely one of the best professors I've had so far. Always willing to help each and every one of his students, but you also have to be willing to seek help from him yourself. Uses team-based learning method, which may or may not be a good thing if you end up with a bad group. But overall, GREAT professor.
He's super nice and funny and is extremely approachable if you have a question. He always answered all of my questions and he writes the final! Posts all slides and lecture recordings online, but definitely go to class, he gets to know you and wants you to do well
He is one of the best math professor I have had in college. I have taken him for Math 151,152,251, and currently for linear algebra. He gives you a lot of work to do but it is worth it when it comes to the exam.I am not that well of a test taker and his group learning style has helped me improved over the courses. He explains everything clearly.
Uses team based learning, so you are forced to learn most of the material on your own outside of class. Class is spent going over quizzes you take after reading a new concept. Is a nice guy, just expect to do a lot of learning on your own.
Best math teacher so far, he used an ipad to take teach on, thus all the notes was posted online aswell!! He even recored the lectures, to have a voice with the notes!! Put up all the quiz solutions online, which was really helpfull aswell! FINAL WAS HARD!
Possibly the best professor at UMBC teaching mathematics, if not the best in the entire school. He's super cool and approachable. You will have to put in some hours to get the grades, but he provides you with every opportunity to do so. If you don't get an A in his course, it's entirely your fault.
I have never gotten an A in a math class before-EVER-before this class. As an engineer, math has always been my sore spot, but I learned a lot (99% on the final) with this class. The team set-up really helped me figure stuff out, and the textbook was well written. Prof Nanes cares about what you know by the end and drops some low scores accordingly
I have him for Calc 1 and I love it! He a lot of time going through examples so it actually is good to go to class if you don't understandhaven't previously learned calc. He's a geek and he does joke around. I hope to have him again for another math class.
You learn from book. He assigns reading followed by individual quiz, which is followed by group quiz, which is followed by lots of hw. Tests aren't very easy, especially when you gotta teach yourself. He teaches for Math Majors. If you're not one, take class with someone else. Class is too hard for ppl who don't need to know this to perfection.
Nanes is a great professor who seems like he really cares about students understanding the course material rather than grades. I took calculus in high school and hated it because my teacher was incompetent, but Nanes is definitely a breath of fresh air. He made me enjoy learning calculus with his easy going attitude and hilarious jokes.
Was hilarious and fairly clear with his lectures. His exams were tough (though probably not as bad as Tyghe's), but if you got an A in his class, you definitely know Calc I quite well.
Team base learning DOES NOT WORK. Professor didn't teach a SINGLE day of class. He just goes over iRats that you, in theory, comprehended when you read. Gives WAY to many assignments. If you are a serious engineeringCS major, this class is NOT worth your time with Nanes. If you do get Nanes, just find his old exams. Class examples are terrible!
He is a funny guy, makes funny nerdy jokes a lot. He teaches lectures well and his exams are not the hardest. Best teacher from all the other Calc I teachers, other professor's students sat in our lecture because they didn't understand their own professor. Do whatever he says on syllabus to get the A, that was my mistake, got a B for that reason.
Definitely one of the best at UMBC. He lays out pretty much exactly what you need to do to do well in his class. He's humorous, talks loud and clear, uploads lectures to BB, and has regular office hours. My TA was also fantastic, as he usually gets the good ones.
Great teacher &nice. Must do reading assignments&use his reading guides. He posts plenty of info about what you need to know&practice quizzes&exams. Posts all lectures online. Go to all lectures, esp exam rev. Only downside is if you have a bad team; know your stuff&do work and you'll be fine. Review quizzes, suggested problems&practice material
This class is structured for every student to get at least a B. There is a 10 point curve on every test, 3 droppable quizzes, and 5 droppable homework assignments. I stopped trying after the second exam because i was averaging 96% on the exams and ended up getting a D on the third exam and a B in the class. Don't buy the text book. Seriously.
Very sarcastic but means well. If you take him make sure to do a few practice problems on your own because he tends to put problems that you have gone over but have a special twist to it. Overall a great professor. Be sure to read the syllabus before class because he gives info on how to get extra creditpoints.
Dr. Nanes is definitely the best professor that I have ever had. He cares about his students and wants them all to do well. His lectures are very interesting and all of them are fully-recorded and put online. The team-based learning approach does work since it holds you accountable for each others' grades. Watch the reading guides and practice.
Fairly good, doesn't grade too harsh and lectures are good.
One of the rates said he wasn't a harsh grader. wrong. He asked for definitions and theorems for the answers and I don't even get most of the credits for it. I don't know how much I needed to be clear. And I don't know why he wants us to write legibly when he writes pretty terribly.
I was 10-12 points from an A and I got a B. Disappointing, but it's important to note that while he teaches, it's hard to understand and do well in the class. The tests are hard, and the final is impossible. Because of that, I got a B and that ruined my chance to keep a 4.0. He seems hotheaded at times as well, but that's just part of him I guess.
Easy.
Great guided reading videos get you familiar with material, then lectures clarify & go over problems & concepts. All classes have audio and the pdf content posted on BB (it's awesome ngl). If you do the necessary prereading and go over the lectures, problems, know definitions and theorems and review previous exams, it's great! He's amazing!
Had the pleasure of taking him my first semester here. He's an awesome teacher. True nerd at heart. Always there for his students. Take notes in class religiously and you will be set to get a good grade. The Exams are a little more difficult than the other profs but thats to prepare you better for the final.
Nanes is tough. He'll give you the "one in three people won't make it out of this class" speech and he will work you hard, but you get in what you put out. If you work hard and respect the class for what it is, you will do well and he will be your best friend. Do nothing to prepare yourself, and you're the 1 in three who don't make it out.
Nanes is amazing! The way he teaches is flawless and he always helps if you ask. You will need to put in the time and effort he expects of you, but there's nothing tricky about exams and he offers 10% extra credit. Definitely go to class because he explains things in a simple way and gives examples that are usually similar to exam questions.
He is funny. Explains class materials well. All quizzes are group quizzes. Assign readings before you come to the class. It really helps to understand the materials though. I liked this class. Don't expect to get an A if you are not willing to put some effort to learn the materials. This is a hard class. Gives 10-15 extra credits in exams.
The course material is tough. Dr. Nanes uses a teaching system where you do problems individually for homework, then do the same problems in class with a group of 4 or 5 students. The grading criteria is greatly in the students favor as it is heavy on homework. I would only recommend taking him if you are required to take this class.
Took me a while to get used to his humor and teaching style, but by the end of the semester I learned to love the guy. Funny, approachable, and the team based learning really boosts your grade. I wish I put in more effort early on, but even for slackers this class is doable, and you can pull up your grade later in the semester if you work for it.
I had Nanes for Calc I, and let me tell you, that was a completely different professor. I felt as though the Team Based Learning system did not do enough in terms of stressing individual preparedness. Nanes is a good professor, but he would be much better at teaching this course if he did away with the team stuff.
Unclear sometimes and expected us to know things already. If you took Calc 1 in hs then this class will be easier i would think. Tests were pretty similar to practice tests. Hard final. Lots of work if you want a good grade. I had a high B going into the final and bombed it to drop all the way to a C. Doesnt curve or give any leeway so study.
Dr. Nanes is a great teacher! Dont let team based learning scare you away! Hes the best teacher Ive had at UMBC so far. He explains concepts really well. Exams have extra points built in. If you have a good group, team based learning can be awesome! Study previous exams to prepare for exams.
Great professor! Lots of work but if you do it you will succeed!
Great professor! I would take him again in a heartbeat. I didn't think I would like the team based learning approach, but it was actually great. He knows his stuff. He records his nots and lectures and puts them online which is amazing.
He is such a great professor! Best math professor since High School. He is very accommodating if students have conflicts about exams with other classes (I had to take 2 exams and the final at a different time). He is willingly to help his students as long as they show interest in learning and improving. Hilarious, great, totally awesome person!
Nanes is the man
Best professor I've ever had. The class is hard, but it's easier with him than other professors, because he knows how to explain the material.
At the beginning of the semester, he was a good professor. Everything was clear, I understood everything. Halfway through the semester, he kinda started rushing through the problems/lectures. Does judge you for not knowing some prior things about calculus. Always remember e^0 , ln(1) 0, cos(0)1. Exams same thing as practice tests, final: HARD
Awesome professor! Made a very difficult subject understandable. He understands that students have other classes, and won't be constantly perfect. He structures his classes to give a lot of grace for bad test/quiz/homework days
He's the man. I got an easy A+ in the class, but I learned everything and he was very rigorous. Take him. He's one of the best lectures in UMBC math.
I would consider Nanes to be the best professor within the Math department, if not in the entire school. His classes are hard, however he is exceptional at rephrasing the material for your particular level in math. This class was the third time I took nanes. this class was definitely more challenging but very doable. Expect to put in time.
Muhammad Ali of teaching math
My all-time favorite professor. Definitely the best professor in the department, in my opinion, and one of the best professors at UMBC. I had him for both Linear and Math 301, and I enjoyed both classes with him. He makes incredibly challenging subjects much easier to understand, and is very understanding himself. Take a class with him!
I've had Dr. Nanes for Calc 1, Calc 3, and Linear. I always pick him if he's available since I find he is the best math professor I've ever had. He like group work for larger classes since if keeps every group member accountable (ideally). Book heavy with pre lecture quizzes, lots of other assignments as well but doesn't feel overwhelming.
I hated math for a long time, and I honestly dreaded this class. However, Professor Nanes is such a stellar teacher that not only did I pass with flying colors, I found myself loving the material. Attendance isn't mandatory per se, but he notices and will not hide his opinions of those who skip.
Honestly, Nanes is a top notch professor. Easily breezing through exams and quizzes, Nanes prepares you for exactly what he's testing you for. Not only this, but he also has fun and hilarious lectures that actively engage the students in participating and understating the concept. His class is set up differently, you are put in teams for this class
Nanes is a good professor, but the material isn't easy stuff. Since this was his first semester teaching it, all we did in lecture was go over the examples in the textbook. If you study the notes, do practice problems, and understand the definitions/theorems, it's not impossible to get a good grade.
I heard he is good in other classes, not 152. Nanes did not teach us anything. You will need to learn all the material yourself and will be quizzed on it before even any examples are given in class. Watch his reading guides, they really do help. Very heavy group work. The online individual quizzes are the same as the in class team daily quizzes.
Great prof! As long as you do your homework and study for exams (which he often reuses exact problems from previous ones) you'll get an A. I really enjoyed the team component of it and he is a fair grader. Grades on understanding not arithmetic. Would most definitely take again for another class.
One of the best professors I have had explained difficult content in ways that made it easy to understand grade was made up partially of work done in groups which gave you the chance to do well even if you are not a good test taker. Would highly recommend
Loved Dr. Nanes in my fall semester. He was a very hilarious lecturer, he would joke round a lot, and most of the material was very easy. His old quizzes were very helpful.
Best math professor I've ever had by far. Really cares about his students. This is the first math course I've ever genuinely enjoyed. It's hard, but if you put in the effort, you'll do fine. Nanes gives really helpful explanations and is really available outside class. It's a lot of group work, but that ends up helping you rather than hurting you.
Nanes was the best professor that I have had so far. Group grading sounded like a terrible idea until I saw what it really meant. He holds everyone accountable and you will not be brought down by your group. TAKE HIM IF YOU GET THE CHANCE.
Heard great things about Nanes, but none of them showed in class. He taught directly from book, so there was no incentive to come to lecture. Examples were either easier or more complex than quiz and exam questions. You best hope for this class is webassign reading/homework grade scale, practice exams and quizzes, and the quality of your TA.
Nanes is an excellent professor. His team-based learning style was definitely not for me. However, lots of pressure was put on the students through random participation. This made sure that you ACTUALLY knew and practiced the material. He offers practice exams/quizzes which are very similar to those you take during the semester. Go to him for help!
Nanes is the best! I failed calc 2, 3 times. I currently have a B in multivariable with Nanes! I have learned so much, but you have to be able to give this class a lot of time. I typically spend >1.5 hours every day on this class. It has been very rewarding. The class is set up in teams. You can rate teammates at the end and it affects their grades
Easily the best math teacher I've had in my life. Works very hard to make Calculus understandable while occasionally threading humor into his lessons. He truly cares that his students learn the material.
This class was very difficult, and while I did poorly on some exams he assured the class that as long as you got close to the average score on the quizzes and tests you would pass the class. He ended up curving the grades in such a way that I passed when I thought I might not. So while his class was difficult, he is a good professor that cares.
This was the hardest math class I've taken. Nanes mainly took everything in his lectures from the textbook, but still important to pay attention to the lectures. Provided practice quizzes/exams. I really appreciated the quiz drop and curve at the end.
Nanes is a great professor, he explains concepts very well, and quiz material will mostly be closely related to examples given in lecture. As long as you don't get lazy you should be fine.
Amazing guy, the math nerd that actually jokes with you and is cool! Only homework assignments are on WebAssign, but the real learning is in his class. You don't have to read the textbook if you just attend his class; teaching is clear, and precise. Don't be the statistic of kids who bomb the final, as long as you study regularly you'll get an A!!
Knowledgeable, nice, and humorous. Class uses Team-based learning and part of your grade is from that. Lots of prep work before class required but as a result you will be prepared when you come in. He's more than willing to put forth effort into helping you learn, so long as you put forth equal effort in learning the material. Take him!
Professor Nanes is awesome. He is very helpful and explains material really well. Lots of textbook reading and lots and lots of homework every week but the material is not that hard so Nanes makes the class fun.
Nanes is a good professor. He makes Calc 3 more enjoyable. The tests were very fair and had extra credit on each. Homework and online quizzes can be tough to keep up with at times. Last time I took calculus was in high school, and I made it through this class fairly easily. Would recommend, definitely the best option for 251.
Nanes is a good professor. He teaches what you need to know and posts the audio of lectures online. He is funny, and quite blunt at times.
Dr. Nanes is an awesome professor. His grading criteria are hard but he really knows what he is teaching, so make sure to attend all his lectures. He posts all his lectures online and but it is much better to be in the lecture than to skip it. He is a fair professor and you can see he really cares about his students. 10/10
He is an amazing and nice professor but you have to work hard to get an A.
Dr. Nanes is amazing. If you show up to class, stay off your phone and be respectful he is extremely nice. His class is difficult, but he explains everything clearly and is very accessible out of class for extra help. He posts the notes from his lectures online, along with a voice recording of everything he says during lecture.
Nanes is amazing, he makes the lecture understandable and clear. In addition to that, he really really cares about his students. It is a pretty hard class because math is hard but if you listen to his advise and try hard you can 100% succeed. I recommend taking him if you have the chance! Also, attendance isn't mandatory but you should still go.
Makes you work in groups. Fine other than that.
Dr. Nanes is one of my favorite professors at UMBC. His lectures are so clear and easy to follow. He does a great job at explaining concepts. His tests are very fair and are graded with an extra 10 points so you have the possibility of scoring a 110% on each exam. This class is a lot of group work, which sounds bad at first, but actually is helpful
One of the most amazing professors I have ever attended a semester with. He would explain everything so clearly and appreciate your questions. His class is fun and clear. He would make the hardest equation a very simple one. I would absolutely tow his class again.
The online assignments can get tiring but DO THEM, they're easy points! Exams are similar to the quizzes. Quizzes were kind of hard for me, but if you practice and pay attention you'll be fine. Look over the 3 exams for the final, it really helps.
I only rate when professors are either amazing/terrible. Best professor ever. Nanes really knows his stuff and actually wants to see his students succeed. He replies to emails on time and takes time on his lectures. He is always prepared for his materials to cover for lectures. His exams are moderately hard but manageable. Study & practice to pass.
Dr. Nanes is one of the best professors I've ever had. His lectures are always interesting & he makes sure everyone understands. No surprises on quizzes/exams. He gives opportunities for extra credit and is always accessible for help outside of class. The online homework gets tiring but is an easy way to boost your grade. I'd take his class again.
absolutely great professor. One of the best I've ever had. Very clear lectures and if you ever miss class notes and voice recording is online. previous quizzes are not really similar to one's you'll get. extra credit helps a lot
Worst math professor ever! Lectures are useless. Most time is spent going those small hw quizzes. Has this group learning idea, where your classmates have to "rate you" at the end of the semester. Assing's 4 sets of hw's per week. Stay away!
Absolute worst. I tried to talk to him and was brought to tears to how horrible he is. I will never take his class again.
Best 1 for calc3, loves to curse, DO THE PRACTICE EXAMS; he will call people out; you are placed in groups during lecture, for the entire semester; he randomly calls on people and shames them if they aren't correct, but this will force you to keep up; Do the readings (they suck); DO THE PRACTICE EXAMS; 2 quizzes weekly + 1 group quiz weekly
Nanes is the best math professor I have ever had! He puts hard stuff in funny and casual understandable terms. He totally made me get out of my "I am bad at math" mentality and I will probably get a B or A at the end of the semester. I legit cannot put into words how much Nanes has changed my outlook on math classes. Amazing professor.
Dr. Nanes is a Sweetheart HE CARES ABOUT HIS STUDENTS. If you see him teaching math course I will greatly advice to take him. Math 301 is probably the hardest math class in the whole math main courses but Dr. breaks its downs and really makes it understandable. If you come with the intentions of not doing the work you should probably drop.
Dr. Nanes is a gem. He truly wants everyone to succeed in his class. Gave 20 extra credit points throughout the year. Quizzes are easy if you know what you are doing. Exams are tougher but manageable.
Kalman Nanes is an amazing man with amazing lectures. Getting help from Nanes at castle on Fridays helped keep learn more than I ever have in a math class. He even messaged me to me to confirm I passed when I thought I failed! If you are bad at precalc, expect to work your butt off. He is brutally honest and will tell you you should retake precalc.
In person, Nanes is great. I enjoyed the classroom approach he takes even though it was weird at first. When we switched to an online setting, he posted lectures from the years before and had weekly office hours. Quizzes and exams were multiple choice. It felt like we were on our own and I wouldn't take this class online.
He's a really nice guy if you avoid doing the obvious disrespectful things like talking during class or using your phone. He's a great math teacher and ensures that students understand. If you have a problem with a concept, make it known to him after class or at office hours as soon as possible. He WILL help.
He is a great person and tries to make class fun; moves very quickly on the material. I got a C but did P/F. Webassign is very annoying and there can be a lot so try and do it ahead of time. His class is lecture heavy so take good notes. He is very straight forward on the material so if you use all the resources given you should get an A.
I loved Dr. Nanes! He is such an amazing Professor! He cares for his students and will try to help you pass the class if you are struggling. (Of course, you will have to attend CASTLE or office hours to receive help.) If you do not seek help from him, he will not care if you fail the class. Make sure to do all the hws and practice problems!
his class is pretty straightforward. I joined the class late due to issues for my major, so it was hard to catch up with so much work, but got thru it in the end. very helpful class and pretty easy to get an A if you work hard and know how to do the examples he goes ovr in class as well in discussion.
Nanes is corny but hes cool. Read the book before class and take notes during. If he goes over an ex, pay attention, those and practice quizzes and exams are key. Nanes lets u know exactly what u do and dont need to know, take advantage of it. He was incredibly understanding about the online situation, he wants you to succeed. Best math prof.
Makes tests and quizzes fairly. Lectures tend to be confusing, but discussion sections make up for it.
I took this class during quarantine. His lectures consisted of him going over the answers to the reading quiz we were required to complete before lecture. He didn't really teach us anything. We were expected to teach ourselves. Maybe he is better in person. His quizzes often had curve balls in them, which i felt was unnecessarily difficult.
It seems that online Nanes < in-person Nanes by a lot. I took this course during quarantine. 4 webassigns, 2 reading checks, 1 quiz almost every week. Nanes likes trick questions. Regarding his lectures, he just works through the reading checks which were graded prior to the lecture... so basically repeating what we had already taught ourselves.
He truly wants you to succeed in Calc 3. He is extremely generous when it comes to extra credit (e.g. chance to get 120% on each exam, drops two quizzes, five hw's, etc.). Exams are a breeze for the most part if you have an understanding of the material and every practice exam question. The class is very manageable imo. Thanks Dr. Nanes!
Get ready to learn by reading. If you don't do well learning out of a textbook, this class will be difficult. There is a quiz at the beginning of the semester based on your Calc 1 & 2 skills. Be prepared to take reading quizzes before he even goes over the material.
The structure of this course is teach yourself. You are assigned reading quizzes BEFORE lecture (graded on accuracy). He explains stuff well but seldom is he actually teaching rather reviewing his quizzes. It just is not flexible to different learning styles. He has humor but that does not help you learn at the end of the day
Professor Nanes really wants students to learn. The course is very fast-paced and the homework takes an extremely long time and is just excessive. The TAs grade the homework harshly. The quizzes and exams were easy compared to the homework. He provides previous exams and quizzes from whence you can study which is extremely helpful.
He was a great professor! Has syllabus with everything laid out with due dates and quiz and test days which is good for staying organized. The reading quizzes are due before classes, which is the same as for homework. Great Professor one of the best math professors at UMBC. Only thing is that it is a lot of individual studying and work.
He is probably the worst math professor I've ever had in all my years ofschooling. first of all the structure of his class is awful he has the class take a quiz on the stuff you learned 1-2 weeks ago while also having to do a reading quiz about different stuff. and his lectures are no help either when you ask for help he always has an arrogant ans
lecture consisted mostly around just reviewing reading quiz answers which I did not like, but when he actually taught it was really very good. Pretty average total workload. Material on exams/quizzes should not surprise you. Final exam was very generous. no questions are designed to trick, just test knowledge. Overall, very satisfied
He is the best professor for Math 221 as of 2022. He grades fairly, cares for his students, and wants everyone to succeed, but you do have to put in a lot of work. His feedback on quizzes and exams is fantastic, they may be mean sometimes, but I know where I lost points, and what to look back on.
Calc 3 is hard by itself, but he made it easier. Had to learn content on your own, but reviewed most of it in class. Don't take this class with a heavy workload. Weekly homework was not hard, but def needed more practice before quizzes/exams. Very funny and caring in class. Went through exam answers after the exam in discussion (always beneficial)
Prof Nanes was awesome, best prof at UMBC for Linear Algebra. He cares about his students, he's clear about what will be on exams and quizzes, and he's very helpful if you are having trouble. Its obvious that he wanted us to succeed, and most of us did.
Nanes kept great notes on his iPad. Most of the time his notes are just walk-throughs of previous homework questions and reading quiz questions. Was good at emphasizing the imperative things to remember. Quizzes were incredibly fair. This course being online made it much easier, but Nanes provided enough help that outside sources weren't needed.
You have every opportunity to succeed in this class, from extra credit to an abundance of studying resources, so if you put in the work you will pass this class. Lectures are not mandatory, but if you do not go you will fall behind. Professor very clearly states what you need to know for the exam so you will never be blindsided by exam questions.
if you're a bio or non-stem major, take Nanes over Tighe for MATH 151. i took Tighe, then had to retake this semester. Nanes' exams and quizzes were MUCH easier than those of Tighe's. also after each exam you get 5 extra points just for showing up to the following discussion period. homework makes you suffer tho. nanes is a funny human in lecture
15 hours per week of hw, not worth
At the start he seemed very intimidating, telling us how we needed to study for hours to pass. Yes, studying that amount is excessive, but doing it helps a lot. He tells exactly what material is covered on each quiz/exam, so there really isn't a surprise since the homework's are almost identical. GO TO LECTURE! He will really teach the material.
Amazing professor which made the difficulty of the class seem a bit more manageable. Lectures are not required but are highly recommended as he is excellent at covering the most difficult topics.
Great guy Really good at teaching calculus as he whips up equations from the top of his head, also funny that keeps lectures less boring 100% recommend.
Worst prof i've taken by far. He's very demotivating and doesn't explain things well. He goes through problems super fast and doesn't really explain anything. He also assigns a lot of homework. I don't know why he has mostly 5 star ratings.
The lectures he give really make the material super digestible when the textbook is overwhelming. He cares a lot, and makes lectures engaging and fun!
Worst professor I've encountered at this school so far. The only way to pass this course is if you teach yourself. He likes to rush through notes and rush through example problems. He's also quite insulting towards the class especially when exam averages aren't what he expects them to be. Better off with a different professor honestly.
Never had a professor thats been absent so many times! Literally was teaching myself throughout this semester because he decides to be absent every other week. There's weekly quizzes, and exams are pretty tough. I highly recommend any professor over him, as he likes to fly through lectures. If you do choose to take him all I can say is good luck.
Generally good Professor, lectures were clear, work and grading mostly fair, but some grades were overwhelming and feedback discouraging.
Honestly, he's a good professor. For most of the lecture, he writes down the topics and explains them as he goes. He really encourages students to study, and he even has office hours and group discussions to explain very hard topics on calc. Also, he's very heavy with exams and quizzes, but that's to be expected for most math courses.
Linear Algebra gives you 20 definitions for the same thing. Dr. Nanes does a really good job of breaking these definitions down and connecting them to one another, and just making the lectures engaging and enjoyable. The tests are fair with extra credit built in. It is important to read before class, but that is b/c of the material, not Nanes.
amazing funny prof. he explains in a way that is comprehendible to the point you feel confident in what you doing. big preacher of practice makes perfect. his 3 exams are basically identically topic formatted like the previous semester's exams. my biggest tip is to look at your own notes and create practice questions rather than HW from WebAssign.
Explains things in depth and is reasonable with the difficulty. Lectures are recorded (audio only) and content is posted reliably. Plenty of homework to builds understanding. Exams are very fair. He also posts a plethora of other resources for practice, and does everything in his power to set everyone up for success. TAs are also awesome.
He shows up to lecture at least 5 minutes late almost every time. Cancelled lecture every other week and put up incomplete recordings of previous years lectures. one recording literally starts with him saying "Oops, I'm not recording" and just includes the second half of an example problem. He seems like a nice guy, and is a generous grader.
Prof Nanes has so much personality in his lectures which keeps him engaging throughout. He also made Calculus easier to understand. Would highly recommend taking him for math classes
Cares about all his students, a lot of homework and reading, but he always drops a couple in the final grading. Definitely go to his office hours, because not only will he explain things to you, but there are always other students there who are willing to help. Definitely gonna try to take another one of his courses again.
Professor Nanes is a very good math professor, he gives many extra credit opportunities and attending his lectures would make it easy to take the exams. He also posts his lectures for our reference. He does teach what the textbook contents are and it would help to use the text for prep. He is also easily accessible outside class.
Nanes comes to class every day in very silly shirts and is one of the best professors I've had in terms of their teaching ability, he breaks down and explains concepts very thoroughly. He did have a tendency to go over time for the first few weeks but got much better. His quizzes can be tricky but you'll do well if you understand the material
Great Prof, all I have to say.
He is one of those professor you have to take because the others aren't as good compared to him.
Nanes was a good prof when it comes to lectures and explaining topics. However, on some of the exams and quizzes, there are questions that he doesn't go over. Also, the pre lecture reading quizzes that are 10 percent of the grade are unnecessarily hard. He also shows up late like every day. Besides these things he is a good teacher.
Genuine guy who makes lectures effective to the extent that they're mandatory if you want to succeed in this class. As far as testing, he doesn't try to throw you off or trick you with a problem that is completely new. Everything will be similar to the old exams provided for practice. If you're taking Math151, or Math251, I highly recommend Nanes.
Professor Nanes is a really good professor. He's the only professor at umbc who makes linear algebra less of a nightmare (because the class is already hard) but he makes it so much easier to understand
Great techer for a difficult class, spent time going over and making sure a topic was in-depth covered. He makes the exams and prepares you correctly for them. Uploads his lectures and notes taken directly after the class which I depended on to pass. Made it so I could sleep in and cover the lectures myself. Godsend teacher for this class.
I took this guys class a couple semesters ago. I just had a nightmare about it and thought I'd write a review. He is very demotivating and does not explain anything at all. He's pretty much in his own world when going through problems. He makes this class 10 times harder because he likes being funny and making “funny questions”.
Good extra credit opportunities, lenient grader. The lectures can be very longwinded at times but the practice problems are similar to homeworks, quizzes, and exams! That tough question you think "won't be on the exam" will 1000% be on the exam
Dr Nanes is a good professor when he wants to be. He missed class and arrived late a bunch and would glance over topics he decided were easy. The harder topics felt easier because he was really good when he actually cared. Exams were fair but quizzes were sometimes based off barely covered material. If you have past 3D knowledge you should be good
I am absolutely horrible at math and I wholeheartedly think I would have failed with any other professor. Nanes gives insane amounts of partial credit on exams and he clearly knows what he's talking about. He makes concepts as simple as he can and gives lots of practice problems. If you have to take this class, take it with him.
The things he tests you on (quizzes, exams) are studiable, but you just won't get by with using only past keys-- he actually switches up the questions to test your understanding. He is a no-BS type of person. Bad reviews are probably from people who tried bs-ing in some way and it didn't fly. He gives you everything you need to succeed-- "lock in".
Dr. Nanes is a fantastic professor. Students from other math 151 classes would come to his lectures because they were much better than the lectures in their class. The grading was quite lenient, and Dr. Nanes was frequently available for homework help.
Godsend prof for difficult class, made hard topics very easy to understand and clearly seems like he cares about us and doesn't want to make us suffer. He warns you when class gets hard, so easy A if you stay on top of things. Best math prof at UMBC hands-down. if you need calc 3, take it with Nanes.
He's the best you've got. Exams/Quizzes may or may not be the same as past ones, but you can completely mess up some quizzes and still get an A. Same with exams, i left a question completely blank still got a B on it. He wants you to pass, just gotta practice math like he says. I'm not a math whiz but passed with an A. Take him if you can for 151
He very helpful when you need help and the lectures are very clear.
For Introductory Real Analysis guaranteeing suffering, Dr. Nanes turned this once-torturous experience into a very digestible class. The homeworks are most valuable, which he gives guidance, his lecture notes are thorough and very valuable, and the pre-readings make lecture material easier. Dr. Nanes will always be your best choice for this class.
Lenient grader, gives extra credit, but lectures aren't very helpful. Spends lectures reviewing reading quizzes and going on tangents. Explanations are wordy and vague. Focuses on doing problems wrong to prove how not to do things. Goes overtime often. Rude when approached with questions. Class isn't difficult, but not the best with Nanes.
One of my favorite professors I've had so far on this campus. I highly recommend attending lectures, they are very worthwhile and better than just reading and taking notes on the textbook. Grading is pretty chill, always has 10 extra points in exams. He's just a cool guy all around.
He's a fantastic prof who knows his stuff, he's a little dramatic and tends to exaggerate the difficulty of units but its because he truly wants his students to succeed and be prepared. He will work with you if you work with him. Talk to him, he's a complete nerd and if you're into video games he's the guy to talk to.
If you put in the work, you will do just fine. Dr. Nanes is an amazing professor. He actually made me enjoy calculus. Super funny and nice guy. He gives you all of the materials, advice, funny T-shirts, and anything else you would need to succeed in the class. It's a hard course, Dr. Nanes makes it doable. Also, he's a very lenient grader.
