This has got to be the best professor out there. His class is extreemly intresting and motivating, i recommend him to everyone

He is a very effective teacher who will not move on to the next topic until he is convinced that every student understands. He is occasionally opinionated about the subject at hand, but often reminds people that what he says is not soley his opinion.

this teaacher has changed my life in many ways, by far he is NOT a one sided teacher, he would not be such an effective teacher if that was true. in thic class to discuss many things and everyone has a chance to speak out and give there opinion .

If you are just taking the class for credits, I recommend him. He is a creature of habit and memorizes his speeches. Overall, you learn what you need to and he gives you new prospective on certain issues. Just write down what is put on the board and repeated twice and you will get an easy A.

Mr. Harvell is one of the best professors in HFCC. He'll repeat his words to make sure you understood clearly. His grading system is very easy. We only took 2 test plus the final exam. Those who hate him, don't accept truth. I would definitly recommend him, because he is the most ILLUSTRIOUS one!!!

Awsome teacher! The class is very entertaining and interesting, and he's very funny, but at the same time you're learning! The tests are pretty much all on his notes. (And for the person who said he grades based on race... thats NOT AT ALL true! He's one of the most open minded, diverse people) I'd reccomend him!

The students that said Harvell was a blowoff did not get the full experience of the class, and I feel sorry for them. Sure, he doesnt assign pointless essays and lots of busywork, but that's because he knows that the key to learning is discussing the material and interacting with one another. If you open-minded you will truly gain from this course.

Not an easy A, but i didn't really try and I still got a B. He is an extremley intelligent man. I really enjoyed his class and found him very logical. Tests are multiple choice with some T/F and an essay or two (there not bad). He gives little easy homework assignments. I was recommended him by a friend and I'm glad I took him.

This is one of the few classes that i looked forward to going to and hated missing even though i had 2 days a week in 3 hour blocks. I actually learned. Make the subject very interesting. I never studied for his test because i was in class and took notes. His teaching style makes you remember everything and he makes sure you know everything.

it's unexplainable to start but bottom of the line i considered him the best instrustor ever. First of all he puts all his effort to deliever all his lectures in a matter for his students to understand. he's very interesting i dont remeber getting bored in his class. we only had like three tests the whole semmester. very educated man.

Prof. Harvell makes expanding one's P.O.V. fun and engaging. You will NOT always agree with his views, but the arguments will be entertaining. Personally, I think that he argues inflammatory positions to get students to sit up and take notice of the world around them. NEVER a dull moment in his lectures.

He cares so much about student success, and is always making sure that I am understanding and enjoying the materials we cover. I love his lectures. you can tell he loves to teach and he makes the class interesting. he will not jump off of a topic unless he is sure the whole class understands it. a cool thing is that he gives us on class period before each test just to ask him questions and go over the test material.

Very very good class! I always wanted to take sociology and I'm so thankful i took it with Mr. Harvell. He is so passionate about what he does and really knows his stuff. His class will make you rethink a lot of stuff and you might not always be in your comfort zone, but all in all, I'd say the one the most insightful classes I've ever taken.

Contrary to what ppl say below, you DON'T have to agree with everything he says. All he asks is that if you Disagree, simply substantiate your opinion from a sociological position.

Prof. Harvell was an amazing instructor. Took his Racial and Ethnic Diversity class and had a GREAT time. Always lets the class express their different opinions and takes into consideration all information presented to him. He's a wonderful sociologist and will always answer questions and give feedback to the students. Great professor!

Harvell is the most ILLUSTRIOUS teacher you will ever have in your life. HFCC should put up a BUILDING with his name on it and then put a BIG STATUE of him out in front of it. Harvell is an amazing teacher he always kept us the whole time (3 long hours) but always kept us interested you will learn a thing or two about the real world but the problem is he never gets back to your emails and phone calls, his tests are over 4 chapters and he never tells you what you should focus in on

Very good teacher! Really knows his stuff. Loves class participation and he will give you any help you need if you just ask. Very fair grading, gives you extra credit. You do have to study though to pass the exams, both from class notes and reading the book. On all quiz material he always you to use hand written notes. Recommend him highly!

He was a fantastic teacher. I am white, female and Christian and somehow ended up with an A-. Some people could get offended at his opinions and at times closed mindedness. I wasn't. It was one of my favorite classes, he is a great lecturer and I would take him again.

I took Mr.Harvell online and got a B, but regreted not taking him on campus bcuz I heard his classes on campus were really fun. You must read the book to be prepared for the test. the test is not all definitions, so reading is a must. I would have gotten an (A) if I didn't do so bad on my first test.

Mr. Harvell is a nice man. I took his SOC 131 class online in the summer. Like some of the other students, I agree that it takes him a while to get back with you, which can be frustrating. Other than that he was fair. I only got a C in his class, but through no fault of his. I got what I earned, so I have no hard feelings. I would recommend him.

He is AWESOME!!!! & You can tell he loves what he teaches!! He's funny too! Describes things in very simple manners. Just make sure you pay attn in class and READ THE BOOK. His quizzes are a lot from the at home reading you are required to do, but he does have Q&A sessions to help. Kinda slow responding to email, but he does eventually reply.

He manages to make a really boring subject interesting and fun to learn! No homework assignments other than reading the book. You HAVE to do the reading on your own because a lot of the tests are from the reading, not the lecture. Explains things very well, especially when questions are asked.

He's one of the best teachers I have ever had. We have very interesting discussions in class. He CAN be offensive at times and doesn't find it wrong, but you should take everything he says with a grain of salt. Focus on the material and pass your OPEN NOTE quizzes. He has guided notes which are so easy. I'm expecting to get an A.

VERY INTERESTING CLASS. He's very enthusiastic and opens class up for discussions. He's kind of arrogant because he thinks he knows everything and is always right, but I guess that's a good attribute for a teacher. Take notes for the OPEN NOTE QUIZZES. Attend class. He doesn't take attendance, but the notes are important and not posted online.

I loved this class!! I took it online and he responded to emails quickly and helped me with everything I needed help with. Long as you read your book and Lecture notes....The way he described things in his lectures notes pulled me in and had me excited about every assignment! As with any class you have to apply your self and you will do well!

Christmas is not what it's made up to be haha Harvell is one of the more interesting teachers at henry ford makes class interesting and makes you think about things in a new way. The tests are based off your notes so don't bother with buying the book.

Has interesting lectures

Harvell can be out there at times, but he says some interesting things. He lets you speak your mind and always has the facts. I loved class. Do your work and don't let what he says cloud your mind. Must be very open for his class! There is a research paper at the end of the semester.

I was always told that his class is an easy A, But it wasn't. it's not hard at all either but you need to read all the chapters and take good notes to pass. My only problem was that i took it with two other very difficult biology classes, I had no time for this class at all. I loved his lectures tho very interesting and hes always there for us.

To be honest: Mr. Harvell was a great lecturer, he keeps you engaged and listening. BUT watch what he utters in class, look up for yourself what he says in class. He is quite a character. His quizzes were tough b/c my class thought it would be on the stuff from his lectures but the tests are on a lot of the book. So take notes and read the book.

Harvell is HILARIOUS! His lectures are engaging & informative. His exams are tough, covering info from BOTH lectures & book. He doesn't tell you when or how much to read, but you MUST READ. He gives quizzes between exams & lets you use notes, SO TAKE LOTS OF NOTES! He doesn't assign homework, so your grade depends on exams & quizzes. STUDY & READ!!

Dr Harvell is a great professor, very entertaining class and very knowledgeable about his subject. His exams also are very oddly worded and are very confusing as well as harder than they should be.

He is a great man. Gives great lectures and makes sure you understand it all. His exams are a little difficult but if u study hard you will pass. MAKE SURE TO READ THE TEXTBOOK! he doesn't ever tell u to but u have too in order to prep for exam.

This class was very interesting. It's important to pay attention in class and take good notes. Please ask questions if you are confused, it would help you understand better. Also READ the book, it would help you for the tests/quizzes.

He's a really amazing teacher. Super funny and entertaining, VERY woke and aware of the things that go on in the world. Uses real life examples so we can understand easier. And we didn't need to pay for a textbook, he was able to find a free one for us online. I'd take his classes over and over again

Dr. Harvell is one of the best teachers I have had going to HFC. Hes very clear and knowledgeable about his topics. He uses a online book so that saves money. Very very little HW. He is lecture heavy(3hr class)but he kept it interesting and. He always had time to answer questions and made sure everyone understood before moving ahead. TAKE HIM!!

Harvell is a great professor. I have his SOC class online. He is very helpful, he gives great feedback, and he takes the time to answer all questions. I am still in his course, I have 100%. Easy class just a lot of reading.

I was scared at the beginning and I thought that I will take a B but I paid attention to his lecture and read all of the information that's in the book so I started doing well and got an A. BEST PROFESSOR.

YOU MUST READ THE TEXTBOOK. I appreciated that he went in depth with his lectures and focused on real world problems that students could relate to such as racism, sexism, and xenophobia. PLEASE READ THE TEXTBOOK. He is a very good teacher in terms of lecture but I hated the open book quizzes and surprisingly I did better on exams.

He is a very sweet and polite professor. Lectures are very interesting & he explains the material very very well. The only issue is that he is a very tough grader. He takes a lot of unnecessary points off tests & quizzes. You have to work hard for a good grade. But despite all that i would take him again.

This class was far from easy; however, if you understand what you're studying and you think about the questions you will get full points. This class is not meant to be an easy A. You will need to think and analyze in ways you may not have done before. Overall his class was very interesting, and I highly recommend that you take him, Good luck!

His grading is weird and the overview of his assignments get humorously strange. Although he has funny lectures and it was a fairly easy class.

I was nervous to take his class because everyone on this website says that he is the worst teacher and gives so much work, but he is the best professor I have ever had. He is super nice and explains things very well and will help you one on one if needed

Harvell is one of the best profs ive ever had. He explains everything in a way everyone can understand it, gives plenty of time for questions if you dont understand it, and never makes you feel dumb for asking simple questions. 10/10 would take again.

Professor Harvell is by far the best Professor I've ever had. He is very knowledgeable about the subject and makes sure you understand by answering any questions you may have. His lectures are interesting and get you thinking with a more open mind. Keep in mind, you must read the book to do well on the exam. I would definitely take him again.

Take this class and be rewarded with the most awesome time! Lecture are on point and no real homework. The lecture will be all you need. He does give extra credit, but you likely won't need it. I'm sad I couldn't take him again and again. Rapid response time for emails! True mvp

If you have to take sociology, TAKE DR. HARVELL. He is ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE. He is passionate, matter-of-fact, enjoys discussion, patient, and impossible to offend. He gives thoughtful assignments that help you understand the material. Grades weekly assignments fairly, just wants to know you get what he taught. The textbook was free. I miss him :(

The lectures were incredible, most days the class ran over time and nobody seem to care and no one was ready to leave. My head was spinning some days from taking so much in. There is a lot of homework, so be ready to read and write quite a bit. I didn't understand the grading, but I was hoping for a C and ended up with an A-. Best class!

Free textbook! He just gives you the free pdf. I took this course asynchronous online and pretty much wrote only papers for homework. If you don't like writing a paper every week I don't recommend taking the course. I feel he graded fairly. Tests were multiple choice with above average difficulty but not too hard.

Don't listen to any of these comments. Don't hesitate and take this professor. Class was soooo easy. All you have to do is read and answer questions. Exams are a bit tough but you can ask for help. Only 2 exams. Very very very easy course.

Harvell was always in a good mood while he was lecturing. He would make good points and made sure everyone understood the topic before he proceeded. I received a "B+" only because of his tough grading. He does grade tough, but also very caring and extends the due date if something is going on. Plus, all of his exams are online.

He is a tough grader on certain stuff but as long you put in that work & actually try. He is not bad at all, he answers emails & does work with you. I went from C to an A-.

I had him for a sociology ethnic and racial class. He was amazing. I am a sociology major so I might be biased, but he was very passionate during the lectures and presented evidence for his claims. This class may trigger people, but keeping an open mind is very important. The assignments were papers, but it was super easy.

Dr. Harvell was the most amazing professor I have had here at HFC. Very understanding, as well as an amazing speaker. The only thing I struggled with in class was the tests (C+) so it is still passing but it was the most difficult part of the course.

Fun professor. He does have a LOT of extra credit if you want to pass this class. His work is somewhat hard you just have to really know about your own history and how it relates to our society. One of his papers are 500 points, but like I said, he has many extra credit opportunities.

I truly admired this class and the information that I have learned will always stick with me. You would need to make sure to read the chapters assigned and participation is important because it allows information to stick with you! The assignments are very clear and concise. If you have worries, don't hesitate to ask for help! Overall, he is great!
