hindu's tough. there are only 100 points, and she takes them even for tardiness.
Participation grade is based in attendance.
she is real nice. easy grader, just listen, take notes, and as long as you pay attention, the exam is easy, the papers are easy, class is only 100 points, so every point counts. Very nice lady.
She is a great teacher.Very knowlegable when it comes to the topics brought up in class.I enjoyed the class very much.
if you show up, she teaches a good class with a moderate workload. If you like being late or skipping, drop her while you still can.
Chose interesting books to compliment class. No final or midterm, just three papers which she outlines carefully so you know exactly what to write and what she expects. A tough grader, I worked hard for a B.
awesome
WOW i love her
Uhhhhhh, NO!
I read 3 books for the class, one about Hindus, one about Blacks, and one about Laoiation. She spends most of the quarter on the Hindu book, expecting you to buy into Hinduism. Don't take, her ego is to BIG!
She seem like a good teacher but she is very bad at doing lectures. She soundd like a inexperince highschool student and doesn't end a sentence with out say (UM or UH).
She was not a good professor. Her lectures were always boring & so many people around me were falling asleep all the time!! Her accent is hard to understand too. She doesn't make class interesting. She's not a good teacher at all.
this class was sounded interesting though quickly vanished. There is reading to be done...not a lot. she likes everyone to participate, goes out of her way to call on people. very strict on attendance. three papers no final.
Has such a terrible accent, you simply can't understand her if you don't stand right next to her. She constantly boasts around the class. She expects you to do basic field work! Its a gen-ed class! BE CAREFUL IF YOU TAKE HER!
This class was not bad at all. Three papers and no mid-term or final. The paper topics were a little unclear at first, but if you to go to her and ask her what she wants, she tells you pretty much what your paper should consist of. You don't have to take notes b/c there are no quizzes or tests.
Excellent teacher. Her lectures are very in-depth, intelligent and she gives a multi-faceted view of the conflicts involved. Don't know where people got that she is trying to get you to "buy" Hinduism, b/c in this class she's v. unbiased. Her accent is fine. Learned a lot and loved it. V smart woman
I really did not care for her at all. I thought her lectures were boring and her way of teaching was awful. I dreaded going to this class, she did not entertain or grab my attetion in any way. Her papers seemed to be easy until you get it back and she did not like anything you wrote. Don't take!
Awesome professor. Be ready to work though, because she takes crap from no one. Highly recommended.
sucks dont take unless You have nothing better going on in your life.
Dr. Menon gave me a good grade and didn't work me too hard. Her classes and readings are interesting. Just talk in class and do OK on the papers. You'll be fine.
find a better class for your money. Getting an A is almost impossible. No tests, tho. u'll do well in the class if ure really interested or if youre already educated on the subject. If not, good luck. She doesnt engage the student enough, can be rude. Very tough grader. Take an easier rel req.
I ignored the mediocre rating for this prof and took her anyway. MISTAKE. I did the readings, carefully wrote pretty good essays, and went to all classes but one. Barely got a B-. Unless you're perfect, don't expect an A, or even an A-.
She is 100% unbiased. I did not like, however, that she was able to take a subject as interesting as Hinduism and make it dry & boring (especially surprising b/c she is a Hindu herself). I felt she could have offered more personal accounts, or more of a Hindu perspective. She grades pretty tough on papers (B-) but received A's on the tests.
Very hard teacher, she expects you to know every single detail and grades very hard.
Shes strict on attendance. Shes really not that hard, her tests are very straightfoward, generally vocab identification and 2 essays which she tells you will be on there. Papers are a little harder she doesnt really say what she wants clearly. She is safe to take to fit your schedule or if no one else is available.
If you have no idea on Hinduism, then don't take her. Only take her if you have a good idea on Hinduism. For example, Brahim? Atman? if you have no idea what that means, then don't take her. Only take her if you know a good amount of hinduism. Very tough grader, went to the writing center and still got B's on my paper. "I don't give A's" (Menon)
I took "Religion and Political Conflict in South Asia." One of the strongest and most fascinating courses I've taken at DePaul. Amazing readings. Excellent balance of lecture and discussion. Knows how to keep conversation on track while synthesizing even the most inane comments. This course ignited my ongoing obsession w/ the Hindu Right.
She's super serious, so be ready to work. If you're a good writer, you'll do fine. Powerpoints are posted on blackboard. Interesting reading. Participate in class so she gets to know who you are. Beware of group project.

great class. great teacher, very hard, doesn't take any crap
This is the kind of professor that simply expects you to get involved in the class...is that so much to ask for? Write a few papers, take no tests, and get involved in class discussions. I like her.
Thought she was going to be hard on the first day, she was a totally easy grader and the class was a breeze. Take good notes, they're all you need for the exams and papers! You don't really have to do the reading, just go to class.
She was very helpful. Wasn't as easy as I expected. Keep up on the readings and pay attention in class and you'll do fine.
Great Professor, great class! Read, participate in the discussions, and know how to organize a paper.
Really disliked her. Aside from her frigid personality, she required ridiculous mandatory trips with a peace/religious organization (30hrs! ), grades oddly and inconsistently. She made interesting material uninteresting. If you have other options take them.
She's very knowledgeable, and the grade was based entirely on 3 different papers. I really enjoyed this class, though. It was very interesting, and I highly recommend this teacher.
She isn't easy, gives you a huge amount of reading and some of it is hard to digest. But she tells you this up front, she is crystal clear on all everything and is a very talented teacher. She can be surprisingly funny at times and her knowledge about the subject was incredible. She is still figuring out her teaching still, will be great someday
If you're taking her class to fulfill a gen ed, GET OUT! There are easier gen eds than hers. There is a lot of reading . Some of it is interesting. The class is based on 3 papers and 10% attendance. She wants everyone to learn, but if you don't like the subject, don't take the class.
I took Menon for Women and Religion not knowing much about either. I was competel fascinated by everything she had to say. She is very thorough and outlines her expectations right away. Yes there is alot of reading but all of it was interesting and you discuss it each class so everything is understood.
Really great teacher, easy to reach , helpful. take-home mid-term and final . Two informed quizzes. thats about it. anybody taking this class and wants books contact me, Thanks. 630-344-2867
This class is interesting and pretty easy. 2 essays, and 2 quizes. As long as you show up to class, its really easy. Prof Menon is also a great teacher.
Great teacher, and really interesting topics. Just keep up with the reading and you'll be fine.
Make sure you are ready to work if you take her class. She's a great teacher and even though she is tough, you will learn a lot from her. This class really taught me a lot about a part of the world I had little knowledge about. I would recommend her!
AWESOME! i loved her. She talks to whole time but she's definately a story tell and she has a sense of humor. Some small easy assignments and a couple papers. Everything she says is interesting. Attendance is almost mandatory but its not bad being there. I'd suggest her to anyone...
she knows her stuff! and she is awesome and loves what she does and is very very helpful if you need help. she admits that she is a hard grader and the class will be difficult but dont get scared off like i almost did, she helps you get through and in the end it really is a GREAT class
She said she was a tough grader but I always got the maximum points on anything I turned in. She really likes participation and to ensure a good grade you gotta at least throw out some critical thinking questions. She is HILARIOUS in a very sarcastic, dry humor sorta way.But then again I was always soo interested in the subject matter.Great class
I loved this class. it really opened up my mind and all the material was relevant to the world today and interesting. She knows what she is talking about and lecture and discussion was always interesting. I would love to take another class she's teaching sometime. You wont regret taking her.
If you're someone who want to get around doing real homework and couldn't care less about religion you'll likely hate this class. But she is pretty awesome and knowledgeable. Makes the class sound scarier than it is. It's three books and three papers. If you're intelligent and contribute to discussions you'll do fine.
Interesting class. There are no exams but she is very strict on papers and there is quite a bit of reading.
Great teacher! She is very clear and sometimes she can be strict in doing the readings. Her papers are exactly what we discussed in class. So if you pay attention and show up you will get atleast a B.
REL260 was a great experience. The books were excellent with an interesting take on religious violence. She's super knowledgeable, funny, cute and very engaging. Discussion is encouraged and interesting. No tests, just papers, generally 5-page max. Would definitely recommend, especially as a religion credit for a PSC, ANT or SOC major.
One of the best classes and professors I have ever had. She is so brilliant and so helpful. TAKE THIS CLASS. It is very hard but so so so so worth it. You have to go to class and YOU HAVE TO READ SHE CHECKS. If you participate, read, and think you will do well.
Menon is a great teacher, you'll definitely learn a lot from her class. However, you need to stay on top of the readings to do well in the class, so if you're not a fan of weekly readings you might want to reconsider taking her. If you're up for the work, I definitely recommend her!
Professor Menon was really amazing. She's incredibly intelligent, has an incredible amount of knowledge on her subject, and is a very gifted orator. Her lectures were always fascinating. She does have a bit of understated, dark humor which just makes the class that much more enjoyable. I looked forward to this class every week.
Super great prof! Very knowledgeable in the subject matter. Her passion kept me interested throughout the quarter. I would highly suggest her if you're serious about the subject.
Doctor Menon was an amazing teacher. She offers a perspective completely different from what many others could offer. She is interesting to listen to and the material is fascinating. The class is definitely best when people have read and participate because she loves discussion. She is a relatively easy grader as long as she can tell you read. LOVE
Don't take this class if you're not willing to put in like three hours of work a week. i like her but this class caused too much stress. I do not recommend her.
Dr. Menon is one of my favorite professors at DePaul. She is very professional and expects a lot of work, but she is more than willing to help you out and the material is very interesting. I highly recommend her as a professor.
Dr. Menon is great--she is so incredibly intelligent in her field & will do a great job imparting this knowledge to you. This is not a blow-off class. Her paper assignments require critical thinking & effort. The readings are dense, but well-chosen, intriguing, & informative. Participation is key. You will learn so much! Definitely recommend.
Dr. Menon has a great syllabus that gives you a large overview of world religions. If you do the readings and participate in class, you'll learn a lot and do well. Definitely go to her office hours for the paper assignments, she's extremely helpful.
Dr. Menon is an amazing prof. If you're an REL major, you have to have her. The readings in 305 are dense, but its also a 300-level so that's expected. She will totally help you with ANYTHING if you're struggling or need help synthesizing ideas. Meet with her as much as possible if you can and you can easily get an A! READ ALL THE READINGS!
Three papers make up your entire grade. Very difficult grader. We had thought-provoking discussions in class but she is overall a very serious professor. I was interested in the general content of the class (conflict and religion, focusing on three religions) but it was hard to get a good grade on the papers, which made the class less enjoyable.
Dropped the course. Prof. Menon encourages critical thinking in ways that other professors do not, but her draconian, near-parental class policies have completely turned me off from learning. No laptops. Readings and books must be printed-out. Grades based on grammar. *Requires highlighters (???).* Take this course if you like your education TOUGH.
Dr. Menon is amazing and made the material interesting and understandable. However, this is not a class where the reading is optional. While she does go over the readings since the lectures are related to them, it's important to have read beforehand to be able to engage and get participation. She is a superb professor and always willing to help.
If you just want an easy A, don't take this class. However, if you are willing to put in hard work, show up to class, think and analyze concepts critically, and learn about south asian conflict then Dr. Menon is the professor for you. Amazing experience. She pushed me to become a better writer and is a reasonable grader if you put in the work.
Extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the history and politics of religion in Asia, specifically India. She has very real experience with it as well which makes class credible and interesting. She can talk forever though, so be prepared for nearly 100% lecture classes.
Need to put effort into this class. Tough grader, may not be clear on what she wants in the essays... Class is very lectured based... so prepare to listen because she likes to talk a lot. Overall, an interesting class, but be ready to be challenged. Not an easy A class!!
Dr. Kalyani Menon is the best professor I have had at DePaul. I was incredibly interested about South Asia and the Middle East going into the class and left the class that much more inspired. Dr. Menon is super passionate about her work and is an amazing professor. Her lectures are powerful ! I will be taking more of her classes; that's for sure !
Really a great professor. Lectures are actually very discussion-based and she's incredibly knowledgable and articulate. Her lectures are very clear and she makes the content easy to understand. There is a fair amount of reading and she does require that readings from D2L be printed for class.
She's very specific with what she wants from the paper, but all with good intentions, the class overall has great material and the two main papers should be the most effort
She requires 3 books. The assignments are not hard but shes very specific about what she wants. Takes lots of notes!!
This proffesor is the reason I minored in religious studies. She is brilliant and makes you rethink the entire way humans classify religion and culture. My favorite professor of all time. Her classes are a good amount of work and she is strict but very fair. I have taken all of her classes and have loved every one. Understanding if you talk to her.
Not an easy A class. Very strict grader, but has pretty clear guidelines. It's just that they are really hard to meet.
Menon maybe my favorite teacher I have had at DePaul. She is incredibly knowledgable about her subject matter. More importantly, she is great at conveying her knowledge to her students. She does assign a lot of reading. However, most of it was very interesting. I changed my major because of her!
This teacher was one of the worst I've ever had at DePaul. She is not understanding whatsoever and is very very hard to please. Extremely tough grader doesn't begin to cover it. This class also had an absurd amount of work. Not one person scored above an 89 on an essay. She singles people out in class and basically picks on students. DO NOT TAKE!!!
Menon is the absolute worst professor I've had at DePaul so far. We have three papers that make up most of our grade and she grades them extremely harshly. To a point that no one can get an A on one of her papers. She's anal about participation on D2L (taken during quarantine) and she gives more work than any other professor I have right now.
I really enjoyed Dr. Menon's class just because she clearly had so much interest in the subject matter and she was so knowledgeable about it. Her lectures are really interesting and the way that she approaches her religious classes are really interesting. She picks out great things for you to read, you'll learn A LOT of interesting stuff.
You learn so much in her class so it was so interesting to read the material and watch her recorded lectures. The course was online because of covid but she encourages students to talk on the discussion boards. You only are graded by 3 papers and participation so going to her office hours is so helpful if you're stuck! Overall, I liked her class.
Great teacher, extremely nice. A lot of reading and expects a discussion post from you every week for every reading, they are super helpful for your papers. I recommend going to her office hours and ask questions about the readings, very welcoming and will tell you what she wants you to write about in the paper.
She has numerous terrible, strict, and outdated policies that actively work against her students. I had an extremely tough work week and was unable to finish one of her papers on time, yet she didn't show any understanding whatsoever. She is the only professor that I've ever seen not grant extensions - and any late work is met with an immediate 0.
Is a fair grader but if you want to get an A on the essays you have to put in extra work so I wouldnt recommend for an easy A. Likes challenging her students and considering their perspectives even if it goes against hers. Cares about how students do and reviews drafts over email and has office hours. Really knowledgeable so you will learn a lot.
Professor Menon is a knowledgeable and intelligent professor. Her classes are discussion-based, and she expects students to participate. We read three books, and there were three essays for the entire quarter. It's definitely a manageable workload, but it's important to attend class and participate in class discussion in order to be successful.
Expect a great teacher
She seems nice and is clearly very knowledgeable, however, she is incredibly strict and unempathetic towards her students. Her class policies are outdated and her grading criteria are way too harsh. If you aren't incredibly interested in the subject material discussed and ready to put in a lot of work, I wouldn't recommend taking her classes.
Menon is very passionate about what she teaches which makes her lectures very interesting. She can be a hard grader but will tell you exactly what she is looking for if you ask for help. Attendance was mandatory (with exceptions for covid) and there was no technology allowed in class. Overall, if you want to be challenged this is a good class.
Professor Menon is amazing! She is incredibly intelligent and makes the course work interesting, even if you are reading ancient texts. Take her Religion and Conflict class if you are in the Honors Program!
While she was clearly extremely knowledgable and intelligent, not to mention kind, the reading assignments were simply too much and unmanageable. Over a hundred pages per week of dense texts is simply unreasonable.
Definitely don't want to miss class. You will read a LOT but you only need to do 5/9 reading assignments which were generally easy (pick two quotes, 3 sentences abt them). She was kind to me even though I was struggling with the material. One test (straightforward) & two essays. Essays are clear about what she wants I'm just not a strong writer.
Her classes are difficult, but still very interesting. Professor Menon is a brilliant lady and incredibly interesting to listen to. Not to mention she was very kind and always willing to help students.
I understand that she may not be for everyone but I absolutely loved taking her course. The best way to succeed in her course is to simply talk, even if you're wrong, talk. And if she thinks you are wrong and you don't then continue to support your idea and keep pushing. Participating and talking is key. It will help you write a better paper
Professor Menon is an amazing professor with interesting and thought provoking lectures. If you are south Asian or interested in learning how religion shapes politics I would definitely recommend taking her class. Her class is one of the most interesting classes I have taken at DePaul.
Absolutely phenomenal professor. Encourages critical thinking, and is open to discussion. I would love to take another class with her, because though the subject was heavy, and the reading was challenging, she made me love the class and even learn more about the topic independently.
She is brilliant, extremely knowledgeable and this class/her lectures really opened my mind. That being said she can seem a little intense but realistically she just wants respect as she cares about these topics and wants you to as well. Reading is outrageous though, basically supposed to finish books in a matter of two weeks.
Professor Menon is top notch when it comes to religious studies, she teaches difficult metaphysical concepts effectively. However, this class has enough reading to make your brain melt and, although she will tell you what to do, her grading is severe. Just listen well and take her suggestions. This class is a real challenge, but not impossible.
I loved Dr. Menon's lectures. She's very knowledgeable within her field and that is displayed heavily throughout the course. This course is mostly discussion based and touches on the readings she assigns (there are a lot of readings). However, she does guide the discussions and allows for participation. Midterm and final are essays 4-5 pages long.
Dr. Menon is hands down the best professor I've ever had at DePaul. She is extremely passionate about her work and provides any help needed to students if you ask. She does assign a good amount of reading, but it's all very interesting. She is also not a very tough grader like some say, but if you're bad at essays this may not be your class.
Professor Menon is brilliant and engaging, but her class is no easy feat. The reading load is intense, yet her lectures make the dense material accessible. Unstuck AI proved invaluable for study prep. With dedication, this challenging course is rewarding.
She cares deeply for her subjects and expects you to put in the work. If you have an interest in what shes discussing it's a great class. If you wan't an easy A, this isn't your class.
Genuinely one of the best professors at DePaul. Dr. Menon is incredible. She is extremely knowledgeable, her lectures are fascinating, and the readings she selected for the class were extremely interesting.
