Kalyani was super clear in the lectures and she always gives the students a chance to ask questions. I would highly recommend her for intro to soci!!
She's a great professor who is very clear on expectations and her grading. She is very upfront, nothing hidden. Very clear lectures, great formatting in lectures. Explains concepts very well. Would DEFINITELY take a class of hers again!
Love this prof! Her lectures are interesting and she is very enthusiastic about the topics. I can tell she has a passion for teaching and is very easy to talk to her. Her reviews are helpful as she gives us sample questions that show up on the tests. I would definitely recommend her.
She was honestly the best prof. She makes class so much more entertaining and actually made me not want to miss a lecture. Her midterms are pretty fair because she hints what the shorts answers so try not to miss class because her short answers are only what was discussed in class. overall she's amazing and I would highly recommend :)
Great teacher
Clear grading criteria, fun lectures. GO to the lectures though, she will ask lecture-specific questions on midterms, quizzes and finals. She wants you to pass and is willing to answer questions. Best prof I've had at MacEwan.
She's really popular because 12 of the class would normally be sitting at a C- when they easily get B's or B+s with her. Don't be fooled, that's why. You don't have to read the text + it's an easy pass (or in this case, easy B). Kind of arbitrarily gives you a mark on any written or long answer work though, so you either appeal or just accept it.
Kalyani is a great educator. She is very clear with what she wants in regards to assignments, and is always offering to help students who are concerned about their grades or content. Only complaint would be that she tents to use simplified illustrations as opposed to real world examples- though this is understandable considering the dark material.
A gem! As a person and a professor there is none finer. Through class discussion she has the ability to draw out of you deeper insights with her questions and comments. She has the ability to make creative thinkers out of her students and never judges a dumb statement, a skillset must for any sociology professor. You must read a lot and participate
Kalyani is an amazing professor, her class was the only one I didn't skip all semester. Her classes are mostly lectures and tests are very note based so showing up for class really helps. She says some of the questions are from the text but you don't need to read it. She is very passionate and really makes the topics interesting. Would Recommend.
Kalyani is by far the best prof i have had yet at macewan! her lectures are awesome. only class i never skipped. Read the textbook if you want to get an A there are always a few questions on the quizzes from the text. during lectures she hints what will be on quizzes and exams so attending only makes it easier for yourself.
Kalyani was a great prof, I enjoyed her teaching style very much. I made the mistake of not attending a few classes and lost out on participation marks so I highly encourage anyone to go to all the lectures! Quizzes were easy, and the papers were interesting because we got to choose what topic we wanted to write on. Definitely recommend!
shes the worst prof! if u go to class ull probably sleep. so boring never take her!
Kalyani was amazing! She was very clear and makes class interesting. You do have to attend and there are lots of little quizzes & short papers, but there was no final or textbook. You do need to read what she assigns, but she is happy to meet with you if you need/want. If you are shy she also counts online discussion, not just in class.
I really liked Kalyani as a prof. She is very nice and helpful, especially through e-mail and when you see her in her office. I enjoyed the course as well. The only thing I didn't like about the course was that we had to do a lot of readings and that is time-consuming when you are taking 5 classes. If you're taking a Sociology class, pick her! :)
I would probably not take another class with her.
I dreaded taking sociology, but Kalyani made it a lot more interesting and easy! Have to read textbook for things she doesn't cover in lecture, she has a lot of material in class too. Only one paper, 1 quiz and 2 midterms; all had questions that showed up on the final!
Very easy prof and GPA booster. Gives you exam questions before the exam at review classes. You do however have to attend class because exam questions do come from class material and she does not post notes in blackboard.
Kalyani made this class super interesting and class instructions/grading material were always super clear. It is really important to go to class though because she talks about lots of stuff that isn't posted on Blackboard!
Kalyani is an amazing sociologist, professor and all around person. Be prepared to read however, as there are materials that she tests on that she will not cover on the tests. She also tests on participation by adding multiple choice questions that you would know the answers to if you were in class.
Dr. Kalyani is the best professor I have had so far. Her lectures are what made me love sociology so much and decide to major in it. She uses power point slides and gives great examples to help explain her point and what she is teaching. She's also super great to go to during her office hours. Very welcoming and friendly. Take her class for sure :)
Kalyani made what could have been a very boring class interesting. Most of her exam material comes from lecture so I would recommend attending. Tests are fairly easy, there is short answer on the final but not on midterms. She is very approachable, nice and funny.
She is a very thoughtful, nice, and clear. Test where very easy 40 multiple choice and 10 definitions. Study her notes and you will do great on her test. I would definitely recommend her
I've had Kalyani for another class and I really enjoyed having her for one of my senior 400-level courses. She is extremely nice and respectful and very easy to approach. You have to work hard in her class but it pays off if you do! I enjoyed attending her lectures and she has been one of my favourite profs at MacEwan.
She's a sweet lady and is there to help you at all times. Her tests are very straight forward and nothing is a surprise, afterwards when you go to see it she'll go through everything and explain where you went wrong. Not a hard class but she makes it a breeze.
I took Kalyani for SOC100 as well, and I thoroughly enjoyed both classes. It was a fairly easy class and she always made it a comfortable environment. She's super helpful if you have any questions/problems as well.
I thought that the instructions for her assignments were very vague. She didn't really say much about what she was looking for for papers. She kind of just said "they're due in two weeks". Also didn't give too much feedback on my work. Plus there's also a lot of group activities. She's lovely but I wouldn't take another class with her.
I really enjoyed having Kalyani as a prof. She has a very soft voice. She explains the concepts really well. However, she didnt explain clearly what she wanted from the term paper and she marked them pretty harshly for an intro soci class. Her exams were pretty fair.
Best thing about this class is that there is no textbook: All of the readings are on BlackBoard. There are lots of opportunities for class discussion so if you've grown tired of one-way lecturing this is your class. If you don't feel comfortable speaking in class you can earn participation marks by joining forums on Blackboard. Recommended.
Kalyani is a very nice person, but her class was very tough. All her exams were based on her power point and mostly from the textbooks. She expects you to memories a lot of material from the text books. She posts her power points on blackboard but they are fill in the blank, so if you don't go to class you'll be missing some notes.
Very informative lectures, but expects class participation (not mandatory but she expects answers from students) if none she makes you talk to a neighbour. She explains every concept really well, however, on tests she expects your answers to be thorough. Very kind and approachable.
Kalyani is the best :) She's helped me a lot throughout this sem. No textbook for the class - just readings. There were 2 papers, 3 little quizzes and a take home final. Participation is mandatory but you earn it through either speaking in class or on a Blackboard forum. Highly recommend taking a class with her!
Marks hard af!!! expects deep understanding of concepts, a lot more than should be expected for a 100 level class
She was just okay. Her exams were medium difficulty (if you read her notes and the textbook). But I thought she was not very clear about what she wanted for papers. She told us what to write about but not what she would be looking for or format. She does provide a rubric but she doesn't go over it in class so it's still unclear.
She is so awesome! You do have to read the textbook for multiple choice questions on exams but she clearly states what will be on the exam. I would definitely take another soc class with her! Class discussions are engaging and she makes concepts easy to understand
TAKE THIS PROF! She is amazing, great lectures, but also material available online if you are a bit of a skipper. You won't want to skip, though, since her lectures are so interesting. She also gives great opportunities to up your mark. No one who gives a crap would be walking out with less than a B, for sure.
Kalyani is an excellent professor. She really cares about the content she is teaching. She shows videos, explains concepts, and does a bit of class discussions or group work. She ALWAYS asks at the beginning of the class if you have any questions about the previous classes lecture. A lot of content, but if you try you'll do well.
Dr. Thurairajah is an amazing prof. Take as many classes with her as you can! She is extremely fair, takes ALL student feedback into account, and gives clear directions for tests and assignments. Soci 368 only had quizzes, and we got to choose the format, and she does not require you to buy a text book. She provides the readings. LOVE HER !!!
She says she changes up the format each section but for my class there was no final, 3 quizzes, 1 assignment, 1 journal (split up during the sem) and class participation. I bombed the first two quizzes so study them thoroughly. A lot of reading to do but she isn't a hard marker for the written assignments. An eye opening class!
interesting class but she expects too much. too many readings and her 'quizzes' are practically midterms, and aren't super easy. she doesn't round up grades even for 1%. no final, but 12 reflection journals and a metapaper all due at the end of the semester, so i wouldve rather had a final
Kalyani is an amazing sociology professor. She makes the subject extremely interesting and allows for people to share their opinions. Her exams are extremely fair and all that is really required for this class is your attendance and readiness to learn. Study hard, and you shall see results!
I loved her. Her class was my favourite this semester and I am now considering minoring in sociology because of her. Her lectures are amazing and she's incredibly enthusiastic and passionate. She provides good exam review also. Attend class and you will sail away with an A.
Marks very hard! expects deep understanding of concepts, a lot more than should be expected for a 100 level class. If you miss class u wont understand the notes because its full in the blanks. Take sociology with Susan raine only!
definitely the best teacher this semester. shes friendly, open to asking questions and genuinely puts effort into her class. her tests are hard but as long as you attend the lectures and study you should get a decent mark. shes engaging and fosters a safe community where people can feel free to share and ask questions without being belittled.
This is my second time having Kalyani as my sociology prof (I had her for 100 as well) and two semesters in a row she has been my favourite prof. She listens to what students want/need from her and tailors her classes to fit those needs. She is also incredibly kind, and I would 10/10 take one of her classes again.
Kalyani was absolutely amazing! She is super accessible in and out of class, in person or over email. If you attend class, read the assigned chapters, and review then you will easily get an A. We had 1 quiz, and 3 non-cumulative midterms made up mostly from lecture (her talking). It is a lot to study but she makes it all super interesting and easy.
Kalyani is a great professor. Attends class is encouraged as the lecture material is tested. She is a hard marker and expects you to have a deep understanding of sociological concepts. Furthermore, she is quite approachable and very understanding of any personal issues that may be hindering your potential to succeed.
Very passionate about sociology and she expects her students to be as well. Class in general is very easy if you put in effort, with 2 midterms, a final, and in-class activities worth 10%. She also includes questions on exams that you would only know if you attended class.
She is one of the greatest profs I've had, she made sociology very easy to understand! She cares a lot about her students. We didn't have a final, instead she gave 3 midterms. Show up to class and its an easy A! She tests on a bit of stuff on the textbook and lecture.
I had the privilege of taking this class and Soci 237 with Dr. Thurairajah. She's an awesome prof!! If you attend all the classes and do the readings, there is no reason not to be successful! I like her rubrics and other instruction on what she expects from the projects or essays. She is very clear about this! One of the better profs at MacEwan!
Shes an amazing prof! She does fill in the blank lectures and as of this year (2019) she started only doing midterms (3) with no final exam! She has mini reading quizzes which test you with 5 questions from the textbook but that past is worth hardly anything in your overall grade. She allows you to do an assignment to earn an addition 2% too.
100% best teacher I've had all semester. It's my first year and I wasn't expecting much from this class, however I needed it for Sciences. Dr. Kalyani made the class very entertaining to learn, as well as very easy for me. She truly shows she cares about her students and wants to give them the most understanding of Sociology 100. Amazing!
She is really good! Soc 100 had a reading due every week and a few in class group activities. GO TO CLASS!! not much information on the slides but she explains everything in class. Midterms were exactly like practice and didn't have a final exam.
I had her for a 100 level class the first time, and she was great. For this class it seemed as if she had forgotten that we all have 4 other classes. Ridiculous work load! Multiple reading quizzes, lecture quizzes, participation grades, a group project, a midterm and a final paper. Expects you to cite 'lecture material'... too much work.
By far the nicest prof I've had, really easy to talk to and she explains things in a way that makes it easy to understand. Exams were very easy and she prepares you really well for them.
Didn't expect a 100 level course to be so difficult .Found it very hard to go into the extreme depth she was looking for and many of the course material connections were not well made. Very nice and understanding prof but will no longer be following through with sociology as an elective due to the poor learning experience.
She is the absolute best. Very understanding and responds to emails quick. Would def recommend her!!! Easiest A i've had.
Graded by multiple things with chances for bonus so it isn't hard to do well. Showing up to class is beneficial, there are in-class activities and will often give hints as to what is on the midterm. She is friendly and willing to help. No final exam was also a treat!
When I took this class for Winter 2019 it was really material heavy. There was a participation mark, 4 page essay, group video with a separate group presentation, 3 quizzes, and a 8 page final essay. The way quizzes were marked made it easy to fail them. It was a really well taught class with interesting material, but it was a lot of work.
Such a sweet prof, she's so caring and helped me by giving me an idea of how to do better on the second midterm. Went from 50 to 80, and on the third, I scored 100. 3 midterms, 10 reading quizzes and she only takes 8, have a chance to get a bonus mark, and has easy participation questions during lectures. Overall, very understanding and great class
She was an amazing prof. she was very helpful and had great lectures. I would 100% reccomend taking soci 100 with her. 3 midterms and 10 reading quizzes and a easy particiaption mark.
She's very kind and makes the effort to check in on her students. She gives 3 midterms (no final exam). She provides students with many opportunities to raise their grades throughout the semester. Her exams are straightforward and reflect what she teaches in class. As long as you study, you will do well. I definitely recommend taking her.
worst proff i have ever experienced.
very easy going prof, clear criteria on what she wants from the exams, as long as you read your notes you should be fine. didn't even study for my soci midterms and got a 90 on both
I'm a SOCI major so I bought be biased, but this was a ridiculously easy A course because she's so clear with her expectations. Lots of small assignments, tests, and opportunities for bonus marks. She's very very sweet and super fun, 10/10 would recommend. Go to class and take notes, as not everything you're tested on is in the textbook.
Kalyani made the switch to online really easy. She has thought the course through really well and has created a very manageable structure. Each week you must read the assigned textbook reading, and complete a reading quiz on the topic. The week following you are expected to watch the pre-recorded lectures on that topic. Defo recommend!
Kalyani was an awesome prof. She's a super sweet lady and was very accommodating for her online class. If you're alright with asynchronous lectures, she's a great pick. There was a reasonable amount of things that you're graded on, and lots of ways to boost your mark. She also did a great job of covering heavy topics respectfully. Take this course!
Dr. Thurairajah was a good prof, but she was a tough marker. She was a tough marker on the bonus assignment even though the assignment was out of 2 marks. Her lectures were good and insightful, and she let us use notes for the 3 lecture tests. There was no final exam.
I took this class bc of diff reviews of her class being easy. There's only one additional bonus assignment but, it's not weighed much so wont make a huge difference to your mark. Reading tests are pretty straight-forward, but the midterms are all written and she does expect you to apply all terms taught in class on these tests.
She honestly made such an easy class extremely difficult for no reason. 10 reading quizzes which are straight from the textbook, her lecture tests are ridiculous, she expects students to watch her lecture videos that can take hours to get through. Kind lady but avoid unless u enjoy teaching yourself
I don't understand all the people who say that Kalyani is a hard marker. If you read the chapters and watch all the lecture videos it is easy to succeed. Chapter quizzes are verbatim from the text, while lecture tests simply require you to apply the concepts to real-world examples. Truly a straightforward class and a great professor.
She's super nice! Reading quizzes were easy marks as it's copied and pasted from the textbook. The lecture quizzes expected a lot of information in a short amount of time so you have to know your stuff. There were no finals but there was an optional test to replace your lowest lecture quiz which was nice. Recommend if you like asynchronous classes.
If you actually study, attend class you'll be good but the thing is you're not graded by much so its hard to bring your mark up once you mess up. She's very sweet her lectures are nice to listen to just cuz her voice so soothing but personally just since she grades by few items I wouldn't take her again.
I'd complete my entire degree with her if it was at all feasible. An incredibly passionate, caring, and gifted speaker and educator. If you wanna do well, here's the ticket: think outside the box for discussion posts and make sure you can answer questions from the lecture objectives.
I took this prof bc of all the good reviews, but she was harder than expected. She's a sweet prof but ur only graded by few things so mess up twice, and it'll bring down your mark a lot and theres not much you can raise it by.
She is the sweetest. But BEWARE she is extremely tough when it comes to grading. She expects a lot from her students who write the lecture tests. Her lecture videos take hours on end to go through. This class is extremely difficult when taking other classes. If you choose to take her, prepare for the lecture exams.
Wonderful person and lecturer, but it is crucial to attend and participate in lectures to get a good mark. She includes lecture tests and group work activities which cover the textbook. The concepts are clear and she gives out helpful advice, she is a bit of a tough grader but you will be fine as long as you put in the work.
She's very sweet and a great lecturer. However, she can be a hard marker and it was supposed to be an easy intro class. If you're looking to improve your GPA, don't take her class.
She is very lovely and sweet. she connects the course content, to real life experience and examples. very clear and organized lectures. she marks hard, but if you listen to her advice for the exams, she guides you to success. she doesn't post notes on slides, you have to show up and write down what she teaches, but she keeps it interesting.
She is an amazing teacher but on the other hand she is a tough marker when it comes to lecture tests and assignments
She's really nice and always asks us stuff to improve the course! I found that she marks a bit tough, but I went from a B to a 100 from the 1st to final lecture test thanks to the advice she gives. Absolutely hated the group assignments tho, the best grade I got with a group was by myself when they weren't there. Overall good prof very passionate.
As a person and professor Dr. Thurairajah is incredibly knowledgeable and absolutely brilliant in her field. The content of her higher level sociology courses are topics that I believe everyone should be engaging with. However, there is no clear marking criteria, and marks are based almost entirely on group work. I would not recommend 368 to anyone
Kalyani was very nice and gave great lectures. We had weekly group assignments based on the textbook readings and were able to rate our group members participation so everyone got the grade based on participation which was cool. A bit of a tough marker but she is generally clear on what she is looking for in your answers. Overall great class!
She is very nice as a person, but is a VERY hard grader. A majority of your overall grade is based on assignments (that are ALL group projects) your group grades you as an individual and your personal grade could be very bad. Everyone in this class I've talked to is struggling because it's dropping their GPA. She expects a lot for an intro course
this prof makes lectures very interesting to listen too and bases all tests off only what shes talking about in the class. very kind.
Kalyani is very accommodating to students. As well as very easy to reach in office hours and gives great, useful feedback. She's caring and remembers everyone's names and creates a safe and fun learning environment.
Amazing professor, extremely helpful during office hours. Can be a hard marker, but allows lots of room for accommodations, extensions, and if you ask her questions on what she looks for, you will be fine! A lot of participation required in her classes so be ready to speak, but it's easy marks.
Kalyani has been the best professor I've had a MacEwan. She is very sweet and really cares about her students. I have taken three classes with her, and have gotten an A in every single one. If you show up for every class and participate, then you will do extremely well. If you have the chance, take her class!
Not that she grades on few things but just doesn't grade on things that are based on knowledge of content. The excessive reliance on who asks the most questions in class was not beneficial. When I come to class I'd like to learn not just listen to her answer meaningless q's for students to get full engagement marks. (Almost half of our grade)
She's nice. And clearly very passionate. But I found some of her opinions to be very steadfast (didn't like students asking questions that didn't fit her narrative), and as someone who has to work in bars fulltime sometimes until 4 in the morning her participation/attendance grades are harsh for people who are trying to pay their way through school
Kalyani made me so excited about sociology and I am enrolled in more courses from her
Hybrid class, with lecture videos posted online to review and comment on weekly. Three major assignments with transparent grading criteria, no exams, and multiple opportunities for bonus marks. Class attendance is optional, but some grades tied to participation. She was accessible, prompt with grades & email responses. Wonderful overall!
