Hard to understand sometimes but overall a good teacher. Definitely take the class. He gives you all the information you need to know.
Overall a great economics teacher because there is not many good ones at unh. He is very helpful and wants you to pass.
Gets easily frustrated when students do not understand. Hard to follow because he writes on the board in complete sentences and does not use powerpoints. Does not have review sessions before exams. Make sure you use the companion website for extra help before the tests. Tends to make things more complicated than they really are.
I do not recommend him as a teacher. He's easy to understand once you get used to his accent and is overall a nice guy but is very forgetful (he'll teach a lesson twice without realizing it), spells a lot of things wrong, constantly talks about alcohol and his "stupid son" and does not do review sessions. He's more of a headache than anything.
He is a very good teacher. If you are regular in his class and pay attention it is unlikely that you will get a bad grade. He talks about beer, wine and other drinks to explain the theory which I find very interesting. Very interesting class.
Upadhyaya has a thick accent, but he is aware of it and makes sure that the class understands him and is always drawing pictures and making sure that we understand the material. I am terrible at economics, but he presented the material so well that I wasn't just memorizing facts to pass a test, I actually knew the material.
Great Professor... Highly recommended! DO NOT BE AFRAID TO ASK HIM QUESTIONS. He loves to help his students and truly cares that they learn something.
He is not helpful at all. His tests are very difficult and he is very difficult to understand. I have study very hard and havent gotten an A on any test or quiz. I would not recommend this teacher.
He made Economics fun by using relatable examples (e.g. Supply & Demand of beer). It made understanding the concepts a little bit easier. He also gives exam questions in advance (without answers), which makes you learn AND have a great chance at doing well grade-wise. Also, prepare to take a TON of notes since he doesn't any Powerpoints.
Best professor at UNH.
Makes Economics fun and relevant. As others have said, he is conscious of his accent and compensates by writing on the board. I didn't use the textbook but it might be helpful if you have trouble grasping concepts.
Professor Upadhaya is the freaking man!!! He is so funny and breaks down the material really easily. He wants everyone to do well and even let us retake a test because a lot of people failed. He does have a thick accent but you get used to it and he writes everything down on he board. One of my favorite professors at UNH!!!
Amazing professor who is very caring. He can be a bit difficult to understand sometimes, but to be honest it makes you pay more attention to his lectures. He'll go out of his way to make sure that you understand the material, and is always available. Can't recommend him enough.
He can't explain his instruction clearly. If you are a wise student, get him away, far far away!!!
His class is kind of easy, but you will not get any improvasion. Coz he can't let you know the clear concept of the econ. His speech is highly confused.
His speech and handwriting are hard to read. Even though his test is not hard to pass, His class materia lare very confused to read, Every time I would ask TA to organize it agian by typing.
The tests are very difficult to understand. His lecture is not helpful and not cover the content of he told before. I think I would not recommend this instructor.
Great professor. He gives review sheet before both midterm and final in questions format. Prepare your exam based on the review sheet. You will do fine in the test.
An excellent professor. he has little accent but is very easy to understand. In addition, he writes almost everything on the board. Do not miss any of his lecture. You will not even need the book if you are regular in his class.
I learned a lot in this class. By far the best econ prof at UNH.
He is funny and has a great sense of humor. He does not use power point. Be prepare to take note in his class. He gives good note. . He curves all his test. Do not use your Iphone in the class for any purpose. He does not like that.
Economics is not for me. But I learned a lot in this class. An awesome professor.
One of the best economics professor I ever had.
I really liked Professor Upadhyaya, while on campus his class was enjoyable, and when we went online he adapted very well, and the class flowed very well. Overall a great professor and I would take him again.
Professor gives students a lot of information that will be needed for the midterm and the final. He is a respected person who I definitely recommend taking a class with!
Professor Upadhyaya is an accomplished business professional in addition to being a good teacher. Every class he reviewed powerpoints and we did a lot of review before the midterm and final. Besides these two assignments, there were only two homeworks that we had to do. Tbh I wish we had a few more so I could practice because econ can be hard!
Great lectures and very passionate about what he is teaching. His accent can be a bit hard to understand, but nothing that impedes you from learning. Only 3 hw assignments and midterm+final the entire semester. Econ wasn't something I was particularly interested in, but he did a great job at teaching!
Close to impossible to understand a word he says, so get ready to teach yourself the material. He's passionate about what he teaches, but because of that he assumes the material is easy. Also he promised us an online exam only to go back on his decison about a week and a half before said exam when we all had plans to go home early. Don't reccomend
I never showed up to class and got an A, there were 3 assignments all year and all of them were online. Very easy
Completely online and did not ever answer emails or messages in canvas. Multiple students said this. The grading scale has the midterm and final each at 40% of your grade with no study guide or elaboration on what is on the exam. Discussions are out of 1 point, never gives a full point. No feedback on anything. Gave us the final with 3 days notice
A good professor. Makes the material very easy to understand. Uses the real world examples to explain the economic theories. Gives good notes. If you are regular in his class you sure will get a good grade.
Completely online and did not ever answer emails or messages in canvas. Multiple students said this. Promised extra credit to only retract his statement. The grading scale has the midterm and final each at 40% of your grade with no study guide or elaboration on what is on the exam. impossible to understand due to his accent. 3 days notice for final
An amazing professor. I like his writing everything on the board during the lecture. I also like his sense of humor. He is a fair grader. If you want to learn economics take his class.
He has 6 assignments all year. All you do in class for the whole semester is copy notes that he writes on the whiteboard, but unfortunately, you can't even read his handwriting. He leaves you very unprepared for the midterm and final because he does not care. And good luck trying to understand him with his accent. switch out of his class!
Harsh grading. Midterm was 30 percent of our grade and the upcoming final is 50 percent of our grade. Attendance didn't matter but his handwriting was god awful and his accent didn't help along with it. Our midterm was no open book, no notes, he just didn't care just like how the last person just stated.
Absolutely the worst and most arrogant professor I have ever encountered. Does not know how to teach. Makes a lot of errors in his own lectures, even in grading, so that some of us have called his attention, too. Does not reply to emailed questions. AVOID AT ALL COST IF YOU CAN.
Can't understand what he says in class. Does not like to help. Makes you feel ignorant when you ask him questions and does not reply to emails. Makes tests unnecessarily difficult as if econ is physics. Even some profs complain about him. Just terrible teacher.
Yes, terrible prof. Does not want to help and does not answer email. And I found out why he does not know what he's teaching. He did all his degrees from never-heard, third-rate schools: Auburn U. for his Ph.D. (duh?!), Thammasat U. for his master's (where?!), and Tribhuvan U. for his undergrad. (whah?!). What a joke this Kamal Upadhyaya is.
Worst prof ever. Did not learn anything from him. And w/ those unknown schools where he went, there is no surprise that this Kamal Upadhayaya is such a poor and clue-less teacher, but loves to pretend he knows something.
Absolutely worst teacher I ever had at UNH. Absolutely never take. Won't learn anything. Does not want to help. Does not get back to you or answer email. Can't even understand a thing he's says.
Do all the homework. Be regular in the class and take notes. You will do fine. The professor really makes class interesting.
It was one of the best class I took at UNH. If you want to learn microeconomics take Dr. Upadhyaya's class. make sure you do not miss any class. He gives a comprehensive notes with graphs. Make sure you pay attention when explains the materials. Gives multiple choice exams and homework. Exams are reasonably hard, not that tough.
Great class! I enjoyed it and learned a lot about the economy how it works.
Economics is hard for me. But I got through this class because the professor made the materials easy to understand.
I was regular in the class. Took good notes. Did all homework. Made an A. An easy class if you pay attention and keep up with the class.
Wonderful professor.
One of the best professor at the university.
Worst professor at the university. AVOID!
Best economical professor at UNH.
What we all agree is that Kamal Upadhyaya studied in never-heard, third-rate universities that do not rank in the top 10, or 50, or even 100 of any global rankings of universities. He went to Thammasat U., Tribhuvan U., and Auburn U (don't why UNH even hires profs from these quacky schools).
I am glad I took Dr. Upadhyaya's economics class. He made the class easy to understand. It was a macroeconomics class. And I learned a lot of macro issues.
I checked google scholar. Apparently, Dr. Upadhyaya has a lot of papers published. No wonder he is so knowledgeable. I strongly recommend this professor.
Did not learn much here. I also checked UNH econ. website and saw that Kamal Upadhyaya went only to never-heard schools. Yet, he pretends or at insinuates that he went to "nearby Yale". Oh, no. what a joke this prof is.
Good professor. Good class.
No good. Does not know his econ.
Economics is not for me. But I passed this class because of this professor.
Certainly -- worst econ. professor ever! Do not take if you can avoid.
Makes economics easy to understand. Good class. One of my favorite.
One of the best economics professor at UNH.
Pay attention to his lectures. Take a good note. He writes almost everything on board. Economics is not for me. But I liked this class.
If there was a score lower than 1 here, that is what I would fairly give/rate Kamal Upadhyaya. Yes, beware of this prof.
I would instead rate him a 0, if only possible.
A mediocre prof. His graphs make things more confusing than they should be. Can't understand what he says, too.
I did not learn anything new in econ. from taking this course. I rate Prof. Kamal Upadhyaya an F-
Writes almost everything on the board. Exams are based on his lectures. Take a good note to pass this class.
Mediocre prof. Can't understand his lecture. Plus - makes the simple unnecessarily difficult in econ.
Best professor in ever had.
AVOID. Very arrogant but does not know his stuff!
Would have never taken this course if only I knew beforehand that this Kamal Upadhyaya is a disaster. UNH deserves much better profs!
One of the best at UNH
He makes economics easy to understand. A caring professor.
Subject matter is not easy. But the professor helped to make it easier.
Avoid if you can. NO GOOD.
Economics is not a science. This Kamal Upadhaya plays quack doctor and wants to turn his micro course into physics. LOL!
Here's my take on Kamal Upadhyaya: Students here can rate him differently. But what we all agree that he is a low-quality instructor because he graduated from 3 third-rate universities (Thammasat U., Tribhuvan U., Auburn U). So what can you really learn in econ. from these schools in order to be a good teacher and adviser?? Not much, I guess.
Take his class. He is the best.
Best economics professor.
He likes bragging about his research. But when I checked his google profile indeed he has published a lot and has a lot of citations. Students are lucky to have a professor of that repute.
I flunked this class with other professor. But I passed it after taking with Professor Upadhyaya. He writes everything on board and explains it clearly. That is very helpful.
Low-quality. And I agree that 3 quack schools can only produce a quack prof.
He brags. He condescends. He does not want to be questioned or doubted. He pretends he is a nearby Yallie. Kamal does all that to cover up the 3 unheard-of schools where he graduated from. We call him a TTH: "Trying too hard."
Best professor in the college
Good professor.
Loved Professor Upadhyaya's class.
Great professor.
If you want to learn economics take Dr. Upadhyaya. He is the best economics professor at UNH.
If you don't want to learn economics, take him.
Haughty and inaudible with his accent. UNH should fire this worst professor I've ever had here!!!
Terrible. Nothing gained from him.
I wish there were more professors like Dr. Upadhyaya.
Economics is hard for me. But I passed the class because of the professor. He gives good note. That's helpful.
60% of student raters here say they will not want to take him again. That more than says everything about this teacher.
Worst prof and class experience I've ever had. To UNH: Fire Kamal Upadhyaya now!
Best economics professor at UNH
He is a good professor. I recommend him.
Professor Upadhyaya makes economics easy to understand. Take his class.
I wish there were NO professors like this Kamal Upadhyaya.
Does not know a single thing in economics. Just mimics other micro profs. Totally pretentious, too. That's what you get when an econ. prof (like this Kamal Upadhayaya) has no Ivy League degree or training.
Is there a grade lower than an F that I could give him? That would be the best he can deserve.
I agree that he makes this course harder than it should be. Loves to create mountains out of molehills.
Kamal has an overall quality rating of 3.2 out of 5. I reckon that says it all.
This is the second time I took a course with Kamal Upadhyaya. He is better not heard at all. You can't understand a thing he says. His accent is thick and heavy. He is obnoxious when you ask or write him. And he has a very high regard for himself (and his research) even though he only went to three fake universities.
No good at all this Kamal Upadhyaya. Definitely avoid!
My greatest mistake as an undergrad at University of New Haven was to take him. Highly do not recommend. Take other profs for 1134 or wait 'till the next semester to take the other prof.
Totally clueless as a prof. But loves to brag (about his theoretical research). Anyway, he is being rated here only as a teacher/mentor, not as a researcher. Glad I bailed out rather than be graded by him. Total misfortune for UNH
No good at all. His course and requirements are not that difficult. But he makes things incomprehensible and demanding. I think that is what graduates of his 3 schools where he got degree love to do (Thammasat, Tribhuvan, Auburn).
Absolutely terrible as a prof. For Econ 1133, take Patrick Gourley instead. He is highly regarded, he is very knowledgeable, he keeps current, and he rates very high among students, even here in RMP (Rate My Professors). I heard Brian Marks and David Sacco are also good for 1133, although not sure if they still teach it.
Kamal Upadhyaya is conflicted. Does not know whether he is a Teacher (for which he is lousy) or Researcher (for which he might be good). But University of New Haven is a liberal arts school = emphasis is on teaching/mentoring where he miserably fails. It's like this site which rates only teaching (e.g., all tags refer only to teaching).
As an international student, I find he lacks teaching calibre. I find him creepy, too, esp. during. consultations.
Don't take his courses unless you have no other choice. He does not care about his students, and no one here has ever said he does.
How can one give such a lowest possible score to such a good professor. I can't imagine that. Looks like this person has personal reason that's why he/she is repeatedly rating this professor with such bad score. Looks like person with some mental problems 🙄.
Who cares about the rating in this site.
Obviously, Kamal cares so much about the student ratings in this site. That's why he responds so quickly within less than a day, by reversing his negative ratings and putting in a perfect 5 for himself. LOL!
Yeah, Kamal put in those last two ratings of 5 for himself on Sunday, 01/19, 7 am. I agree Prof. Patrick Gourley is much better. I took him for another course.
TERRIBLE PROFESSOR DO NOT TAKE!! I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE!!!
Total disappointment. Does not know anything but speaks as if he knows everything. Can't understand what he says, too. Can I possibly rate this one less than a zero even before the school year is over?
Fun class. Do not miss the class. Do your homework. You will be fine
He writes everything on board. Don't miss the class and take a good note. You will have an easy A.
Good professor. Make sure to do all homework. His tests are basically based on his class notes.
Economics is not easy for me. But this professor helped me to understand the materials. Homework was 20% of the grade. I did all homework and that boosted my grade.
