She is a horrible teacher, no help whatsoever! Complete b**ch to her classes, blames a failing class grade on the students.
Kandace Hurst is very knowledgeable when dealing with chemistry, yet she doesn't pass a good understanding of each topic down to the student. Which leads to the tests being pretty difficult and questions being worded very strangely.
Professor Hurst is a very straightforward and benevolent educator. Her homework is all online and due once a week, and the tests are not too hard if you study the homework and notes, pay attention in class, and understand the material. Not an extremely demanding course.
Hurst is horrible. She literally just reads the slides and expects you to understand how to do even harder problems compared to the examples she uses in class. Her grade is based off just homework and 4 tests, including the final. The tests are hard. Every word problem has many conversions and you will struggle to make an A unless you study hard.
Very hard to follow. Might be better off just trying to learn it on your own. Gives bonus every now and then at random so it's smart to go to class.
She blames failing grades on the students . Which out of a class of over a good 200 I find it hard to believe no one studied and our class average was a 60! I reviewed over practice test and did great , but fail her test.(and I was not alone). Its like she takes pride in being a hard teacher. You will not learn from her, go to tutoring.
Hurst taught the easy problems but would put the hardest ones on the tests. She blames everything on students. You dont have to attend class because she puts all notes online. Go study them with a tutor and take as many practice exams as you can to get that C. Homework barely counts for your grade and there isnt any extra credit. Terrible class.
Attendance helps but isn't necessary. My advise would be to study before doing the homework each week in order to live up to her expectations come test time. She goes over the basics in class but rarely covers anything beyond that. I'm guessing she expects her students to teach themselves and spend a lot of time doing solo chemistry outside class.
Awful. I would NOT take this class ever again. Tests are extremely tough. I spent hours studying (days before and leading up to) and still could not make A's. The practice material is way easier than the test material. Her tests are way more in depth. DO NOT TAKE FOR 1202. Class lectures move extremely fast. She blames students. No curves.
Test questions are all trick questions. Gives you study guides and other teachers' old tests that are absolutely nothing like her tests. Does not curve and blames students for low grades. Homework hurts your grade sometimes rather than helping it. Take ANYONE else for 1202.
Hurst was probably the best professor to take for chemistry. Chemistry is my weakest subject. She really wants to see her students do well in the course, so she is very open to offering help. I stayed in her office almost everyday for help, she is really easy to talk to as well. Would have made higher, but the final is ridiculously hard
Do no take this professor. She is horrible and her test are very hard. Take anyone but her.
She gave you bonus for showing up to class and for getting clicker questions right which I'm sure most of the class needed. Her tests were absolutely ridiculous however. They would be worded strangely and would include trick questions. The tests and the exam reviews would be totally different. If you can take any other prof for chem 1202, then do
I really enjoyed Hurst Class. She knows her stuff and is clear about her expectations. Her exams can be difficult since she makes them a little tricky. I actually learned from going to class and working out example problems with her. She lets you what kind of questions will be asked on the exam and give bonus points for participation sometimes.
I am so annoyed with this class. I feel like I have a good grasp on chemistry but Hurst gives some crazy hard test. I study all the notes, practice test and even read the chapters and the highest grade I got was a C! Good thing she gives homework, but you have to get it right the first try or you get points taken off .
Hurst rocks, but like any college class you have to work for an A if you want it.
Would not take again! Taking her class for the summer and the class average on Exam 2 was 66%! Homework is graded on "mastering chemistty" takes off so many points if you don't get the correct answer the first time. Having such harshly graded homework assignments doesn't promote learning. Tests are much harder than material presented in class. Boo
One of the worst classes I have ever taken. She gives you a link to "old exams" that aren't even her class exams, they're another teacher's. Her tests however, are impossible. All the questions are trick questions & her outlines don't help a bit. Going to class doesn't help or make a difference besides the bonus. Do not take her classes!!
Do not believe any other reviews that says Hurst's exams are confusing with many trick questions. Its not true, her exams are much like her lectures, straight to the point. She also gives clicker questions that count for nothing but bonus points. She's a great chemistry professor, I would take her class again.
Refuses to curve, even when the class average is regularly in the 60-70% range. Angers easily and regularly stops class to complain about something one random student in the lecture hall is doing.
Hurst is a straightforward sort of professor. She would walk in, begin the lecture, and then dismiss us when she was done. Her lectures make the topics seem easy, and bonus quizzes are easy. With that said, her tests are very difficult and you cannot rely on Hurst to prepare you, because you will fail. If you want a good grade, be ready to get help
Tests are impossible no matter how hard you study. Awful teacher don't take this class. The only good thing is bonus point clicker questions.
NO NO NO. Do not take her! Her test are hard, and she has an attitude.
She's really good about answering questions, unfortunately she'll even answer questions unrelated to the material which uses up learning time and results in more lessons to be learned on students' own time rather than in class.
She gives a TON of bonus. I think ill end her class with close to 150 free points. ( entire test grade) with her participation and clicker questions so GO TO CLASS. She speeds through the material so you have to make sure you do your part and study a ton. Test are difficult and hard to finish in 50 mins. (no extra time).she's known to have attitude
She gives out a lot of bonus. She's always willing to help and answer your questions whether in class or her office hours. She can be strict if you interrupt her during lecture. Be prepared to have the power point already copied or printed out because she does go quick. Also helps to do practice exams and practice problems.
boss status
She knows her stuff but isn't good at preparing the class for tests. Also you would think that you could just teach yourself by doing homework but Mastering Chemistry is basically like taking a quiz because there's no example problems. If you don't already know how to do something then you won't even be able to do the homework. Just don't take her.
Professor Hurst is very knowledgeable with all the information taught. She works many examples in class and shows step by step how to work problems. She also offers tons of clicker quizzes which is why going to class is important. Test are only touch because they are given in regular class time. I enjoyed this class and her very much.
Hardest tests ever, but GO TO CLASS!!!!! She gives bonus clicker questions that will often boost a C to an A. You don't have to get an A on one test to get an A in the class, if you get the bonus and do good on the homework. For the final, work tons of old finals with the links she provides and you will be fine. Hard work is the key!
Dr. Hurst is very knowledgeable in her field, and really cares about her students. Her tests are challenging, but she knows it so she gives lots of bonus. Go to class, and utilize the free tutoring centers. Also, do lots of old finals and go to SI sessions and you should be fine. The final is always curved. If you really work hard you will get an A
Print the notes, go to class, and do the homework and you'll get a great grade.
I took Chem 1201 with Dr Hurst during my first semester at LSU. Her test are the hardest science test I have taken. Be prepared to teach or reteach your self the material as she can be confusing. Dr. hurst will help you id you go to her office hours. I went to class and barely scraped by.
She is an amazing teacher and is very clear. I always walked out of a lecture completely understand how to do everything. Unfortunately, her exams are ridiculously hard. You can know your stuff and still fail the test and she doesn't curve. She also does pop clicker quizzes.
Honestly, Kandace is one of the worst and hardest professors I had in college so far. She goes fast through the slides and gives lots of bonus clicker questions. Exams are very hard, expect putting tons of effort without her giving clear directions and study guides. It seems that she does not cover most of the exam problems. Worst experience
Dr. Hurst is a terrible Professor. Tests are extremely difficult. homework is difficult. Tests are not like her example problems. its almost like she takes pride in being a hard professor, but if you go to her office she will help you but it will seem as though she does not want to. Terrible Professor. Avoid taking her if possible
The average for the first test was a 42 for my class. That should tell you a little about good ole Kandace. I survived this class, but I would not take Kandace Hurst again. I would say that the class got easier as the semester went on but my classmates wouldn't agree. The majority of the class was failing. STUDY STUDY STUDY and don't miss class.
Very clear and to the point with lectures, but the tests are extremely hard. If you make little mistakes your screwed and the tests are not curved. if you want an A you have to work for it.
I took Hurst for Chem this semester. The lectures are long, the slides are self explanatory. She grades out of 1000 points so through out the semester you can track your progress a bit better. Lots of bonus 100+ points. HOWEVER the exams are ridiculous, multistep problems and will kill the GPA. Unless you have some great chem background stay away!!
I like Dr. Hurst-- I really do, but her tests are a whole different beast. They are extremely tough .. it's almost like they are written by another person. She is very informative in lecture and cares about her student's grades. Work hard and get all the bonus and you should be fine.
Material covered in class was never what was on the test. First test class average was a 44% F and gave clicker bonus to curve it only to a D. Second and third test class averages were 54%. Whole class was failing. Hurst had a lot of attitude, SI sessions didn't help and tests were overall impossible. If you have the choice, DO NOT TAKE HURST!!!!!
Only good thing about this class is that she gives bonus points, but they don't help at all. By far one of the hardest classes I've ever taken. Everyone I know is failing or almost failing, and they aren't, they've devoted their lives to chemistry. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS BY ANY MEANS. It was one of the biggest mistakes of my academic career.
Dr. Hurst is very unclear about all of her work. She treats student as if we are all dumb and has no chances for us. She considers us the problem and not her ways of teaching. The test are impossible. She says bonus will help your grade but it barely does. Do not take Hurst if you care about your GPA.
tests are not nearly as hard as they are said to be, if you know how to do her examples and the problems in the end of the chapters you will be fine. Gives a yuuuge amount of bonus. Bonus is about 15-25 percent on every test. kind of harsh with students.
Dr. Hurst is the worst professor as far as preparing students for her ridiculously difficult exams. She shows absolutely no mercy to students as far as rounding up grades go, although in her mind she probably thinks otherwise since she claims she's generous because of all of the bonus points she gives. She makes chemistry harder than it has to be..
Tests are unnecessarily hard--like honors/upper-level chem. Lectures are clear & office hours help, she knows her stuff. But you still won't do well unless you practice textbook problems. Most of the test is multi-step problems that incorporate all of the material covered. I only passed because of bonus, 67 on final after 20 pt curve.
Very good teacher in my opinion. However, tests are 100% impossible to pass. Her tests are 99% trick questions and she does not properly prepare you for the difficulty of the tests. Received a D and went to SI and did every bonus question and homework. The only issue was testing.
Her test are difficult; very difficult. As a bio major the amount of dedication this class required was ridiculous. There are no practice test given before the test so my best advice is to buy the chem book and do the practice problems found at the end of the chapters. I had to try and teach myself so this by far is the worst class Ive EVER taken.
Terrible. I had to work my butt off the whole semester to bring my D to a miracle B-. Find someone with old test. Your only hope is to do any and all questions in the book, homework, and then go to office hours for any you have wrong. She uses all trick questions from lecture, book, and homework. A few easy questions that you'll confuse for hard
She was a very abrasive professor. Yells if one person in the class doesn't pay attention. Studied for days, did all the homework, still failed. The class is 80 minutes but it felt so much longer. The kind of tests that you go in confident understand all the material and walk out with a 43% with the curve.
Even though she didn't directly teach my chem lab, the way she runs things is awful. She only gives you 15 minutes for the online pre-lab and post-lab quizzes, which makes it almost impossible to do 6 or more math questions. I do not recommend her at all. For lecture or as the head of your lab section.
The pre/post lab quizzes are nearly impossible to pass with only 15 minutes to do about 7 extensive questions. Her review for the mid term exam was very detailed but way too much content to study when the exam did not require it. You must memorize the equation formulas for the quizzes and exams. Must pay attention to Lab so you can do the reports.
her shoulders are soooooooo broad. an absolute dime. 10/10. wish i was a freshman so i could take this class again.
Absolute worst professor I have ever had. Her test are ridiculous. She made chemistry way harder than it really is, and because of that I really didn't learn much from her class. Her bonus points really don't help. The class average for the first test was terrible. She has a terrible attitude and is not willing to help her students. Do not take her
She's really an awful professor and doesn't understand that if a class full of biology majors average 42% on the first exam that it is totally our fault and we just didn't study. Highest grade I got on an exam was a 90. In Chem 1201 with another professor, I finished with a 105% overall. Hurst tests wayyyy harder than she teaches.
Dr. Hurst's Chem1201 Class is definitely a course that makes it possible to make an A. Although the tests are challenging, she gives you ample opportunities for bonus. The bonus is the reason that attending class is crucial; however, if you get the clicker bonus points, your grade will raise tremendously. Homework is easy points as well.
Do not by any means take this class! All she does is read directly from the PowerPoints and she often stopped lecturing to fuss if one person wasn't paying attention. Tests are IMPOSSIBLE unless you devote all your time to this class, bonus points did nothing, and she doesn't curve. Makes you feel dumb if you ask questions and gives unclear answers
Love her! She is strict and will call you out if you are cheating or are on your phone. She doesn't curve the test, because she believes you have to earn bonus points by attending class and earning them through clicker questions. I got a C, D, C, B on tests and still passed with an A because of bonus points.
Chem 1212 takes a lot of effort outside of class anyways with lab reports and pre/post lab quizzes, but I would suggest taking a different professor for lab. I got an A on my midterm because my TA (who was awesome) graded it and gave partial credit, but then for the final Hurst graded them and gave no partial credit. Got a C on the final. Not ok.
She reads off the powerpoints, but honestly try to take your own notes. The material she goes over in class much easier than the material on the exams, and there are a lot of trick questions. The bonus points help your grade tremendously though, but you have to attend class to be able to get the points. Still, would not recommend.
Decent teacher. If you took AP Chemistry in high school then she'll be an easy A or B but if you have no prior knowledge but you actually try, then you should be able to get a B or C. She goes kinda fast in class but does stop for questions. SI sessions are very helpful because the test are all multiple choice.
Dr. Hurst is a tough professor, but I really enjoyed her class. If you go to class, she gives enough bonus points (through clicker questions) to boost your grade by an entire letter grade. To succeed in this class, I worked most of the optional textbook problems as well as attended office hours and SI sessions when necessary.
Really good professor. She breaks everything down during class and is helpful during office hours. Exams were fairly simple if you studied. Buy the lecture notes and take notes during lecture.
Hurst is a very good teacher. She makes you work for your grade but offers a lot of extra credit. Her tests are pretty difficult but if you go to class and do all the extra credit opportunities, you'll do great!
Show up to class for her bonus questions! Her tests are super hard but the homeworks and all her bonus points definitely cushion your grade, I had an A up until the final.
Lectures did not prepare students for exams. Even with a curve, many students struggled. The tests are much harder than necessary, and she seems to pride herself on trick questions. Consistently paused lectures to reprimand individual students for being on their phones or not paying attention. Lectures were bare bones, tests were not.
Pretty good at explaining concepts, but an insanely hard tester. Tests will require you to have every subject completely mastered. She gives lots of extra credit.
Expect Mastering Chemistry online homework assignments often. Tests are multiple choice but still impossible. Attending class will get you bonus points, but they won't help much in the end. Lectures are super boring but somewhat helpful in understanding the material.
I loved Dr. Hurst! She was nice and funny during lecture. If you pay attention in class and understand her slides, you'll do fine. You could get a D on a test and still have an A from the extra credit clicker questions. She cares and is helpful during office hours.
Although I ended with an A in Mrs. Hurt's class, this was by far my most difficult class this semester and i'm a biology major. First let me start off with her lectures, you must attend them whether if be for notes or bonus points. Bonus points are crucial for her class, I personally never missed a class. I attended SI, but it didnt help much.
Dr. Hurst is an interesting professor. Like everyone said her test are extremely hard, but if you get the bonus points by going to class you should be fine. Just study the examples out of the text book that are in the chapter. Also work the problems that she suggests. Going to the SI is really helpful, Corey is a cool dude. Overall decent professor
The best professor I've had at LSU. She genuinely cares. She's very accessible and flexible. Her test are fair and you'll do fine if you attend each lecture and keep up with the homework. Seriously, take her!!
She really cares about her students, and if they understand the material. If you have a question she will explain it. She also offers a $40 note packet at the beginning of the year that is highly recommended because it is all of the power point slides, you just have to fill some of them in and take you own personal notes on them, and bonus points.
Her lectures are awful. Barely makes anything understandable and only has 25 question exams worth 100 points.
Great professor overall. Available when needed outside lecture and plenty opportunities for bonus points with clicker questions. Lecture is very important because she breaks down everything during this time. Sit in the front of the class so she could recognize your face just in case you need to stop at her office.
Dr. Hurst gives bonus clicker questions almost every class. On the first day of class there are graduate students selling her notes, GET THEM! Her lectures are not that hard she explains well and is very hands on working out every problem with you, BUT test are EXTREMELY hard!
Dr. Hurst is very professional and knowledgeable, seems genuinely excited about basic chemistry. Attendance is not mandatory but you must attend class to get bonus clicker points-I got almost 100 extra points this semester! Lecture can be mind numbing, the material is challenging, but if you participate and pay attention, Hurst is a good option.
Missing class is not really an option unless you are really good at teaching yourself. Buy the notes at the beginning of the semester from the grad students, it was the best decision for me. You want to get as many of the clicker questions right as you can because they count as bonus for your grade.
Dr. Hurst is a very good lecturer. At times she can be a bit monotone and that may feel boring but the information she gives within that boring sounding lecture is fantastic. Buy the notes packet from the grad students. $40 and you never have to take a single note, its all there. Would 100% take her for Chem 1202 if she is available.
I honestly was terrified to take Dr. Hursts class from all the bad reviews. I dont know what other people did in her class to think shes such a bad professor, but I thought she was wonderful. I made a B, C, B, then an A on the 4 exams. With extra credit from clicker questions, I got 1000.5 points out of 1000 points at the end of the semester.
Would not take again, her exams are unnecessarily difficult, as in theyre just all trick questions. I dont usually rip on a professors exams, but hers are literally setting you up to fail. Meticulous detailing will get you on her exams. She gives a lot of bonuses, but honestly go take a prof you can learn from.
Save yourself and do not take Hurst. Her exams are all trick questions and it is literally impossible to get above a "C" on them. I am a good student, I study weeks in advance, and I make good grades but I am always left disappointed and confused when I see my exam grades considering how long and hard I study. I am literally a slave to this class.
Her tests are impossible. Every single question is a trick question. I study 1-2 weeks in advance and haven't made above a C on her tests. She's monotone in class, she doesn't work out problems, she just gives you answers-can't teach. She does give bonus through clicker questions that can help boost your grade, but she's 125% not worth taking.
Dr. Hurst is a decent teacher. However, her tests do not match what she teaches. She does not prepare you in the least bit for the difficulty of her tests. One question is worth well over 7 points and no partial credit is given considering it is multiple choice. Do yourself a favor and just choose another professor.
Dr Hurst is a great professor in that she is very professional and knowledgeable. She genuinely wants you to succeed. However, the level of mastery she expects is impossible to achieve! I only passed this class because of the bonus and homework points; I got Ds and Cs on the exams. Hardest I have ever had to work for a class, with little reward.
Look idk what her problem is but she makes the tests impossibly hard, even with the bonus points if you screw up a test, youre screwed.
Dr. Hurst is an amazing chemistry professor. She starts out by selling a notes packet for $40, which reduces the stress of note taking considerably, and gives out tons of clicker question bonus points per exam. Not to mention she is a thorough teacher, but as with any other class, you have to be willing to work and should attend SI to stay on top.
Gives a lot of extra credit, if you go to class you get easy bonus points. The material is a bit challenging, but that's par for the course. Great teacher.
Gives lots of bonus for showing up to class, and going to the lecture is needed to pass. Her notes are very thorough and she is extremely organized and could not know more about what she is talking about! I'm taking her again for Chem 1202.
Dr. Hurst definitely knows her stuff, but she goes through lectures very quickly. During class she will work through problems quickly and doesn't explain them so you have to learn them on your own. She gives lots of bonus, but her exams are extremely difficult. She doesn't prepare you for the level of difficulty of her exams. Go to SI!!
Dr. Hurst is a very kind person. Her lessons are taught very well and she clarifies things when you ask her. She gives a lot of bonus points which can basically save your grade. Her tests are tricky, so you have to really put some hours studying the material. Everything on her tests is in the notes pack you can buy at the beginning of the semester.
Dr. Hurst is a great professor. She explains everything in her lecture in-depth. Her tests are pretty tough, but they are very fair if you study and master the material. She gives you every opportunity to succeed (bonus) and wants you to do well. She prepared us so well for the final exam. Most students fail it, but I received a 220/200 easily.
I loved Dr. Hurst's teaching style so much, I scheduled her first for next semester for 1202. You have to put in as much as you want to get out. Attendance is necessary (and there's many bonus points that comes from that) and there is a lot of homework, meaning you must practice outside of class often. I definitely recommend.
Must buy notes package at beginning of semester otherwise you'll be completely lost. Very fast paced with lots of information packed into each lecture. Pulled many all nighters for exams, including the final. Made a C, A, F, F, and C on final and ended with a B- because of the bonus she gives out.
You can master EVERYTHING she teaches in class, as well as the homework material, and still fail her tests and the final. Her tests are basically all trick questions. She likes to make people feel stupid. BUY THE NOTE PACKET AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SEMESTER! Only plus side is that she gives clicker quizzes in class that are for bonus.
Professor Hurst isn't a bad person, but her tests are way too difficult. Like unnecessarily difficult. She does give quite a bit of bonus in class, but that still does not make up for putting nearly impossible questions on the exams. If you study really hard, you can pass, but unless you've taken the class before or are a genius, dont expect an A.
Although she gives lots of extra credit her exams are the hardest things I have seen in my life. If you take this professor expect to get an F on at least one of the exams. The only reason I ended up with a B is because of how curved the final was and all of the bonus points she put in. If you want to be stressed out and have a hard prof take her.
This class is hard no doubt about it... but Dr. Hurst is an amazing teacher. She wants to makes sure that you KNOW the material she is teaching for the exam. Her exams are challenging but everything on the exams are written out in her notes and is fair. She has a bad rep on here but she is caring... LOTS of bonus about 20% of the final grade.
Dr. Hurst is NOT the professor for you if you don't study or know how to take tests. The tests are hard, not plain memorization. They require you to know how to solve the problems and also how to interpret the question. You could easily get an entire letter grade in bonus points by going to class and doing clicker questions, though
There are much better chemistry professors out there. If you can take someone else, do it. If you can only take her, beware of how hard her tests are. You think you know what you are doing and end up failing the tests. I am super thankful she give bonus. She also does not really explain after she has done so once.
worst chem teacher ive ever had
Professor Hurst wasn't the worst teacher I have had. CHEM 1202 Is a tough class in it of itself. Her exams were challenging although a B or C could easily be made... She gives a TON of bonus and the final will be easier since you will actually know the chemistry. More than 6 hours of week of focused studying is required to make a B or above.
Im not sure about her Chem class, but her honors lab is easy, coming from someone who isnt very good at Chemistry. I really enjoyed the class cause I had a great TA but Dr. Hurst was pretty good with setting it all up, even though her instruction can be vague. The midterm and final are hard to study for but go over past labs and their math.
This course is difficult and Dr. Hurst makes sure you know the material before her exams. She gives a lot of bonus!! I made Bs and Cs on the exams but still finished with an A. She has a monotone voice so it's hard to get through class. But you can pass her exams if you study and put in time outside of class!!
She was rough. Tests were insanely difficult and only had like 20 questions, so if you missed only a couple you would already get a B or C. She rarely gave worked out answers to reviews or practice questions. The practice questions she expected us to do on our own were WAY harder than the ones in class so it was IMPOSSIBLE (and those were exam ?s).
Please do yourself a favor and take anyone for CHEM but Hurst. If you take her, you'll probably finding yourself getting your first 5's and 10's on an exam in college, and it's extremely difficult to come back from that.
Great easy to follow along with lectures. Study ahead.
Dr. Hurst is an excellent professor for a first year student. Chem 1201 is always going to be a tough course but her lectures are clear and concise and if you listen she tells you exactly what is going to be on the exams. Chemistry is tough but if you study, take notes, and come to class you will do absolutely fine.
She does a pretty good job of getting you the information you need, but her tests are way to short. You miss two questions? C+. Homework is mildly difficult but worth it. Buy that notes packet she offers and use Socratic website for homework. Get it right then study it, if you miss the hw questions you lose points quickly.
This class was extremely difficult if you don't have the time to put 5-6 hours into reviewing every single week. The lectures were long and very monotone. There is a notes package available at the beginning of the semester. She will tell you it is not required; however, all of her powerpoints are exact copies of the notes package.
If you are not great at chemistry or cannot teach yourself it, please take someone else. SI sessions are a must; Ben Chanes is a godsend tbh. Her tests are ridiculously hard, I got a D on every single one but still ended with a C+ because of all the bonus. The departmental final everyone has a hard time with was easier than her normal tests.
Professor Hurst was a great teacher for Chem 1201. She explains the material well and gives boatloads of extra credit as long as you go to class and do the work. The SI sessions are great and really prepare you for the test. Do not blow this class off or else you will fail.
I suck at chemistry so to get to the point: Attend class, she gives bonus for attendance/has bonus quizzes; Go to SI; Buy her notes, it's only $25 and it's her powerpoints; Do the homework, it really helps; Rent the textbook if you want, I didn't use it though. I failed or had D's for pretty much every test because she words it weird but I passed.
Attendance is not mandatory, but she gives bonus which can boost your grade a big amount. Her tests only have 20-25 questions on them, so you cannot really miss a lot of questions. She offers a notes packet to buy which is really helpful in class and for study purposes! I recommend attending SI meetings as well. She is a really good teacher.
Extremely hard tests for no reason. Basically has a $30 hidden fee for the note packets which are almost required. Doesn't even let students take pictures of her lecture slides, moves too fast. Avoid if possible.
The worst chemistry teacher, even worse than Flowers. Its very hard to stay on pace as she goes over the material too fast. Tests have very few questions so if you miss 2 the highest youll get is a B. Tests are nothing like the lecture notes and homework.
I took Hurst for 1201 and she was not a good teacher, but I took her again because of the insane amount of bonus points she gives. But, once we moved to online school this semester she took away the bonus since the test were open notes... but the test were still hard. So, if its in class take her for bonus, if online... well good luck Charlie
This class is hard, and she knows it. She purposely puts the most commonly made mistake answers as choices on the tests, so be sure to know how to do everything. Her tests are very hard (the class average for the first two was around a 40% on each). However, she gives makeup work (homework is worth a lot). Ask questions and be prepared for tests.
Your grade in this class relies entirely on you showing up to lecture to be elligable for bonus. You will definitely fail tests, her averages on the first three are always below failing, which she will tell you multiple times. The bonus boosts you up multiple letter grades. Tests are way harder than class examples. If its online, just dont even try
I took Dr. Hurst for Chem 1202 and while she was great for that; Chem 1202 is a different story. She does not really help in class and mainly reads straight from the notes packet. Her test are very hard and does not reflect the questions on the homework or in the notes, but she does gives a lot of bonus to help account for that.
She is by far one of the worst professors I have had. Her teaching only became worse once we had to move online. She took away the bonus points that she told us were going to "save" us. She refuses to accept responsibility for the fact that she is not a good teacher. Her class average for her first 2 exams (yearly) is a 54%. Do not take her.
Really, the only way to pass her class is by taking every chance to get bonus and to KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING. She isn't great at teaching/explaining and her tests are really hard.
I'm here to speak positively on this teacher. I commit less than 2 hours of studying to the test and haven't watched many lectures. The lectures I have watched were very helpful and would definitely prepare you for the tests. I get it a lot of people hate the online classes, but that does not mean you should leave terrible ratings for no reason..
Her lectures are a bit boring but ok. The powerpoints are pretty useful tho. I found the exams easier than the homework.
Dr. Hurst is a rough professor to say the least. Her lecture videos were all prerecord so no attendance needed. Im not here to say shes a terrible person and doesnt mean well but instead giving a piece of advice if you can take someone else.... take them.
The lab course goes with the lectures so practice the formulas for them the hardest part of this lab is the math, lots of busy work and remember to take the quizzes. AND FOR YOUR SAKE CALL HER "Dr. Hurst" or you will regret it.
The class was asynchronous, so she just uploaded lecture videos to Moodle, which were very clear. Her tests were reflective of the material taught in class and very fair. She offered bonus and even dropped a test grade. You definitely have to put the work in yourself, and stay on top of the lecture videos to do well. Overall, I recommend.
If you want a good grade in the class, be prepared to put in the time to do so. Her lecture videos were helpful. Shes a little bit mean, so be careful.
Dr. Hursts class wasnt super easy but was definitely possible to get an A if you watched her lectures and took good notes. Class was asynchronous and exams were open note and unproctored, but she still made them somewhat difficult. Shes not one to give out extra credit but she did drop our lowest exam grade.
The class was asynchronous so she just posted the lectures and expected us to learn the material ourselves. The tests were extremely difficult. You could understand the stuff in the lecture and still do badly on the exams. Definitely don't recommend this prof.
Dr. Hurst was a great teacher. With 100% online lectures, the course was relatively easy. She did a great job of explaining and providing examples. Test were okay, but as long as you study you'll be fine. She provided me with a good chemistry background for my next chemistry course.
I'm here to comment on the lab for this class. Chem 1212 is just 2 credit hours but I spend at least 5-6 hours a week studying and preparing for labs--which is way more than I should be. Dr. Hurst provides clear grading outlines, however, the majority of this class will be done with your TA. BE PREPARED TO DO A LOT OF WORK. Chem 1212 is difficult.
The lab itself isn't bad, but the finalterm are a little much for what's actually learned. The book is vague, the material is taught differently(some not at all)in chem1&2, &TAs dont give feedback on data pages and analysis. Yet you're expected to know every little bit of the labs for the exams. I mean, at least make the exams open book.
To put this simply, Professor Hurst is not very nice, lenient, understanding, or helpful. If your grade in the class was the determining factor for weather or not you graduate, she would be happy not giving you the tenth of a point needed to earn a certain letter grade in the class. So do not expect much in terms of her helping you out.
Dr. Hurst honestly just needs to take a chill pill. If she did not have such a big ego and was not so rude to the class, I genuinely think she could be a good teacher. She is so worried about being respected she ends up just being hated. The tests are challenging and you cannot cram. Review your notes often, unlike how I did, and you should be ok.
I had a great TA, Kadeem Hayes, so it depends. Professor Hurst herself seems intimidating and you don't really contact her. The experiments, data pages and data analysis are pretty straightforward. However, the midterm and finals were difficult, and caused my grade to drop significantly; you have to study hard for those, both 25% of your grade.
She is a great professor! She breaks everything down in a way you can understand. She is also willing to take the time to help after class and during office hours.
Labs really depend on your TA, mine was pretty good. I never saw Dr. Hurst, but she was kind over email. I hated this class though, takes a lot of time, plus the midterm and final being worth so much is stupid. Some labs were drawn out, some could barely be finished in two hours. You will be fine if you put in effort on the front end though.
This lab is really fun. It is taught by the TAs and my TA was great. Grades were always put in promptly and the criteria for assignments were always clear. Dr. Hurst was also great. She was super nice and was available to show me the questions I got wrong on exams and answer my questions. Use the quizzes to study for the exams and you'll be fine.
Class is very homework-heavy, and you'll end up spending 3-4 hours a week doing data pages and analyses. Luckily I had a good TA, but make sure to maximize every point possible in this class, as the midterm and final seemed unnecessarily difficult. I fell short of an A by one point on the final, and was told there was no opportunity for a curve..
This class requires a lot of work, but the labs can be fun if you have a good TA. The exams are challenging, so use Unstuck ai and review your notes regularly to do well.
She came in as a replacement for Jennifer Garcia after the department fired her 2 weeks before the semester ended for no good reason. Kandace Hurst is very rude and does not care about the students.
I loved my TA that was teaching the labs. The most difficult part of this course was Dr. Hurst. When I emailed her in advance that I would miss 1 class due to my disability (which I had documentation for) she tried to argue with me. About my disability accommodations. Dr. Hurst, some disabilities are invisible, and the ADA is 34 years old.
class depends on TA. Our TA was alright and a pretty easy grader. Lots of prelab and postlab work do write tho. make sure you study for the midterm and final tho. some people i know had a's in the class the whole semester, but when the midterm/final came around, their grades dropped to Cs. other than that, just show up to lab and ur good.
Chem 1212 is taught by a TA so it depends on who you get. I had two and the first one was great but the second one kind of rushed us out the lab. When you're being told 45 minutes before the lab ends to wrap it up it means you may not get all your data that you need. So I guess it depends on your TA.
Hurst will ignore your email and never respond so if you have a problem good luck communicating with her about it. She also tends to randomly pop up in lab to scold students about their clothing. Lab is taught by TA (thank God) but overall an ok class.
Overall a decent professor. Gives a lot of bonus credit. Only problem I have is that she tends to go 20+ minutes above the lecture end time so try to keep that in mind if you're scheduling. Nice outside class if you need help
She gives out a lot of bonus which is very helpful! There is about one homework assignment per week. I struggled a bit but I used Crambetter which really helped me to understand anything I may have missed from class. Overall not a terrible class it just takes a decent amount of studying and memorizing.
Not the best lecturer but she gave a lot of bonus opportunities especially if you attended class. She also let me retake an exam and my final and was always super nice.
Her lectures aren't mandatory; however, they are highly encouraged, as you can earn a lot of bonus points, which will help carry your exam grades and overall grades. Most of her exams, if not all, are taken in Himes. She usually assigns one or two assignments for homework a week. If you need her, contacting her is very easy.
Attendance technically was not mandatory but you should go to class because gives TONS of bonus. All exams except final were in himes and hard but I crammed so take that as you will. I thought her posted lecture videos were very helpful and helped me understand all of the topics.
Attendance is technically not mandatory, but if you go to class you get a lot of bonus which really helps your overall grade. This class honestly wasn't that difficult, and there's a lot of resources on Moodle you can use to study for exams (I recommend watching the videos she posts for each unit). Tests are very similar to practice exams.
