Professor Oguri is somewhat of a strict professor. You have to work pretty hard because she's very specific in what she wants in the papers you write for her. But as long as you follow her directions, you'll be fine.
When she asks for your opinion she really wants to hear hers. She wasn't clear in her instructions.
her class will put you to sleep.
She's horrible, if you want to write something and speak your own mind, don't because you won't get away with it, I got a C on her paper because I was writing about **** marriages when all my other papers had A's.
She is very condescending and feels she's always right. Don't bother expressing any dissenting opinions or challenging what you consider to be an unjustly low grade...
Lets just put it this way, I AM SUFFERING IN HER CLASS @ THE MOMENT! Up to now, I wrote about 3 papers, and I still do not know what she wants for a good paper. Too much to do and so a little time! I am not learning anything...she's beyond hard...help
I don't like her look at all.....her course is very tough. I don't recommend her to anyone. Good luck if you have her class.
She rocks
This professor does not have a very good attitude even she tries really hard. I don't like her at all.
She is been in teaching since genesis times so she is not energetic or spontaneous.I had a hard time trying to stay awake. However, i managed to pass due to the considerably moderate level assignments and tests.Like i say,if there is a will, there's a way.
One paper I wrote she did not agree with and that seemed to highly reflect on my grade (got a low C) . Overall the class is do-able. Its not easy but not hard either. Shes pretty friendly and the work load for the class is reasonable.
She is great and offers a lot of extra credit. What is on the study guide is exactly what is on the test. She grades easy on her two event topics. Easy B if you want an A it is not impossible to get one you will just have to read the book.
Try not to taqke this class. She exspects perfect papers. Her standards are ridiculous. You do hardly anything Asian oriented either. She makes you do hard projects, such as interview someone hours away and so forth. Expect to do a paper non-stop.
I got along with this teacher well and earned an A in the class, but I saw her be pretty hard on some other people in the class. She is VERY boring, but as long as you go to class and take decent notes, it's not too hard. Tests are pretty easy.
She is very boring in her lectures and that is what the whole class is about. Taking notes from a BORING uninteresting lecture. She tends to blink A LOT which gets to be very annoying.
Outside of editing hundreds of papers, She doesn't seem to enjoy spending extra time helping students. She's nice enough, but doesn't like to elabrate...if you want answers keep asking questions and be specific. If you're a slacker: STAY AWAY!!!
If you're complaining about her class, you don't belong here. The workload is easy, just do "fill-in" book-work. Her interview paper is highly "BS-able", who is she to question the authenticity? It's all about proper grammer, sp., puncuation, etc. THAT'S IT.
maybe im a dumbass but i studyin so much for her exams and i always failed them. the papers ive turned in to her are good but they'll never be perfect to her standards and the problem with that is she never tells me whats wrong with them.
if yoko uno and the devil had a baby.. this teacher would be the child... she is too boring. well if you want a class where u can sleep in teh back seat.. this is it.. he tone in voice is soo soft.. made me sleep all semester.. i got a c barely.. she might have had sympathy on me.. she was horid.
I really didn't have a hard time with this teacher. Basically if you get along with her, things go very smoothly. Her papers were easier to write than my ENG 001 class!!! Note that! This class shouldn't be hard so long as you actually give some effort. I recogmend her =)
This class honestly made me not like Anthro! I don't have anything against her as a person, she's sweet and nice, you just never know what her standards are. You think you write a good paper but then she gives you a C and says you don't have enough "analysis." Take only if ur serious about Antrho
WORST PROFESSOR I have ever had!! She is horrible at returning e-mails and her grading policy is absurd. Don't take her unless you really like to be be-littled(she's a mean one)!!!
I love this class. There no in-class essay which is good because I usally do poorly on it. Basically, it 4 essay, 1 mini-research project, a food from your culture presenation, and a lot of bs work. Her grading is kinda somewhat hard and she expect perfect papers. Take her and good luck! :)
She is absolutely the WORST teacher at CSULB. She is extremely anal and close-minded! I have never met a professor like her.
This is one of the best professors I've ever had. The work assigned is a piece of cake, plus shes very good with assisting her students. She jokes around with the class a lot and every class flies by. Highly reccomended!!
this women makes learning fun! she is such a sweet person shes very easy going and thats hard to find these days. i learned alot and didnt even realize it. she hardly has any work and her exams are easy! got an A without trying too hard. take the class people you wont regret it.
She is a very easy class if you just talk to her and make sure she gets to know you. All you have to do is say good morning to her everyday and ask her how are things... and you're a shoe-in for an A. All my papers are BS...yet i get consistent B's and A's.
One of those instructors that just get on your nerves. She thought I wouldn't pass the WPE, but I passed with a 15. She's good at telling you what you're doing wrong, but not what you do well. If she is too conceited to not notice your paper's thesis, you're screwed. Not a pleasant experience. I highly suggest CR/NC, or just don't take her class.
take this class credit no credit. she sucks at teaching this class and has too high of a standard. I passed my wpe with a 15 even though her grade said that i would not. dont take her

good good good
She is a great teacher, really enjoy listening to her lectures and no teacher has ever made me wanna listen. Love anthropology, really interesting suject.
She definitely isnt the best professor, but shes not the worst either. Her tests are hard for everyone in my class, and her lectures leave alot to be desired, but overall the content is interesting and i would have to agree with the previous comment...she is really good at pointing out the bad before the good. Sad, but true. Sometimes she is nice though.
She's really anal. One paper we we'er suppose to present our proposal. A PROPOSAL of what we were going to do. I got 50% on it because my idea was too broad. My topic was Filipino Religion and if it did/didn't cahgne coming to America. I hated this class with a passion.
She's funny and has interesting lectures. Her tests aren't too hard if you just read over the material. As for her papers, she grades more difficutly because shes particular on making sure you make connections with the class material
Enthusiastic professor, has sense of humor, positive yet serious, lectures before examinations (not good), intense readings, didn't specify textbooks till a couple of wks into the semester -- ppl failed on 1st exam, outside work required, lengthy test questions
Good Teacher but grades way to hard on essays. Whole grade is essays and tuff to get a good grade on one. Even on turned in outlines she grades tuff!
Sometimes she uses too many stories & examples to help students understand. I tend to forget the focus and so does she. . .
incredibly harsh grader. top tip: avoid!
Do not take her...if anything avoid getting her. She is a hard grader, does not show interest in a student to pass the class...one word, AVOID!!!She sucks and her exams suck as well, they are too confusing...AVOID!! DANGER!!
10 current events, 5 quizzes, essays and random attendence. She gave out extra credit for the most random things: voting, flu shot, takin the WPE, etc. Harsh grader, but I got an A in her class. I could tell most ppl don't like her but I think she's really nice. Cancels class at least 5x & even dropped a few papers b/c we didn't have enough time.
Wow, this class was easy. I don't what the heck some of the previous raters are talking about, but Ms. Oguri is a nice and funny teacher. Although she's a moderately difficult grader, as long as you try your best, put in your effort and utilize correct grammar, you'll do fine.
Its a lecture class, if you are bad at just straight lecturing dont go. Her tests are hard because they are ambiguously written even though they are multiple choice and dont be fooled by the review sheets. The class is nothing but key terms. Shes a nice lady though.
hard grading class but she knows what shes talking about and is very interesting to listen to. just study! or ur screwed. overall, i loved the class.
okk..the ppl that downgraded her are truly morons im sorry, but she is a hella good professor. cheezy jokes, she is a pretty hard grader, but if u care about school ull get at least a B guarenteed ( i got an A). She isnt that hard; shes clear, straightforward and the ppl that do bad in her class cant even speak english right. Once again, morons.;)
Dr. Oguri is a hard grader, but if you read and study your book, you will sure pass her class. She is funny, I don't know why people talk bad about her. A word of advice to those who bad mouth her, don't be lazy and study.
Please avoid this professor at all means. She is a B*%$%, she won't help you but tell you to read your book. She is very, very boring. PLEASE AVOID HER IF YOU WANT A GOOD GRADE!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was very interested in taking Anth 120, but Dr. Oguri ruined it for me. She was sooo boring and her lectures were awful. She would get sidetracked all the time and I think she favored males over females. Her class is easy but it's a pain to go to. She messed up on my grades b/c she doesn't know what she is doing.Take someone else for Anth 120!
She's not all that interesting. Try taking another teacher if you can.
Imagine Tia Carreira in 25 years. She's nice & helpful. Not anal, just organized. Take ANTH 120 with her, shes funny. She uses you for examples if you're in the first two rows.
The first day of class, she scared the hell out of me. I gave her class a chance, and actually it didn't turn out as badly as I expected. She seems super tough and all, but if you get on her good side, she is willing to help you. Overral, I enjoyed her class...
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!!!! HER LECTURES ARE BORING AS HELL!!! THIS WAS MY LAST CLASS FOR THE DAY AND SHE SERIOUSLY MADE THAT HR N 15 MIN SEEM LIKE ETERNITY!!!! I WENT HOME MENTALLY DRAINED!!! HER TEST AREN'T HARD BUT THEY ARE LONG...VERY LONG!! EASY THO...IF IT WEREN'T FOR THE FACT THAT SHE'S SO BORING I WOULD RECOMMEND HER CUZ SHE'S PRETTY EASY!
horrible lecture. non responsive to emails. unclear syllabus. do not take.
This class was harder for me than most of my other 100 classes. She grades tough on the papers and grades harder after each one. She does try to make class interesting, will use you as an example, and is funny at times. Take the class, it's interesting, but be ready to put some work into it. She offers extra credit and shows videos!
boring as hell, way to many examples, you have to go to class for points and if you don't read. shes nice enough, but she favors boys. the class wasn't hard, just boring, take it if you must, but i recommend something else.

Imagine Tia Carrere but a lot older. She uses the people in front for examples. The papers get harder with time and the tests are kinda difficult- USE STUDY GROUPS! I CAN'T EMPHASIZE THAT ENOUGH! Other than that- she's super nice & the lectures are right outta the book. Attendence is importance for extra credit points.
Note: This class has nothing to do with Asian Culture. She grades extreamly hard, and if you arent on her good side your grade feels it. I had an A or B on every paper, but got a C because she didnt like my final paper. She isnt specific in what she wants, and isnt really willing to help you understand. if you have to take her, study up on grammar.
AVOID THIS TEACHER AT ALL COST!!!! She is not very helpful and has high expectations for students, but is not specific in what she is looking for in the assignments. THIS CLASS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ASIAN CULTURE!!!!!!! If she doesn't like you, you will be disappointed with your grade, no matter how hard you work.
Dr. Oguri is extremely unapproachable and a little rude. She likes to use students as examples and typically picks on the ones in the front. Attendance is important- she takes roll randomly and gives points for being in class. Her tests are hard so take good notes and read the suplementary readings.
If you are interested in learning about anthropology, take this class. Dr. Oguri is smart and open minded, and doesn't allow any slacking. She really does teach you to see things from a much wider perspective. Attendance is mandatory- random roll call gets you points. Test are very hard. Take extensive notes and do the reading in both books.
She is unapproachable and does have high expectations. She is a strict teacher and not very friendly. But if you can hold your own you'll be fine. First impressions matter with her too, if she doesn't like you then she is less likely to help you. SERIOUSLY NO JOKE
nothing to do with "asian american culture" but merely a writing class. grades u better if u make a good first impression with her. very nice and mildly funny but i suggest taking someone else.
Hard teacher, hard tests, pointless papers. She does let u turn them in late, but u get points off. Sit in the front or middle of room b/c she has a soft voice and it's hard to understand in the back, especially when she mumbles, which she tends to do a lot. Take good notes cuz she expects A LOT and def read the chapters or u will get behind.
Dr. Oguri is a great teacher. Her teaching is very....alive. Her lectures are very entertaining but taking notes and doing the reading is crucial. dont miss class. do the extra credit. You will be fine! REgarding the papers: visit her during office hours if you need help. I went from a c- to an A. you can do it!
I ended up with a really high A in this class and I did most of my essays and studying the night before class/morning before class. She's not a hard grader at all. She is at times unapproachable, but overall I came out of this class writing better.
There is honestly quite alot of work, but it improved my writing. She does give you a chance to get an A though-you just have to earn it. She drops your lowest quiz grade (which is open book) and gives you alot of extra credit opportunity. She also gives u alot of freedom to choose what you want to write about as well. I ended up getting an A :)
She's an alright teacher, but she's a little bit vague when it comes to what she wants out of assignments. Also, for some reason I had a high A throughout the course, and ended up with a B. It seems that she favors your grade if she likes you, and she didn't seem to like me that much, so maybe that was it.But it did improve my writing for the WPE.
This class was alright for me. You don't really learn anything about Asian American culture. The name ASAM 100 is pretty decieving. It's a writing course. The assignments itself were a little vague. I didn't know what she expected from certain projects. But she was very knowledgable and her teaching does help improve your writing skills.
It's a hard class, but fun!
her grading is hard, but that's because she's pushing you to do well. lots of extra credit. pretty all right
She's huge on attendance. The first few assignments are freebies. The grammar tests are open book. The class is basically a writing course. You have a research paper to write and at least 4-5 papers. She's an easy grader, granted that you know how to write. If you need help, go to her office hours. She uses the textbook a lot.
I really like this teacher. She is great at making what could easily be very boring lectures, into very interesting ones. Also, if your room is stuffy she will end class early and gives extra credit points for attendence on random days. so show up. Study for her tests and do the essays and you should be fine.
Not an easy class but Dr. Oguri makes it fun and entertaining. She is a great teacher and interacts with the class during her lectures. Extra Credit is given as well but not that much. Attendance is a must.
She's not that bad, somewhat intimidating. But regardless you have to work for the grade. Lots of extra credit opportunities. She's nice if you go to class and she likes class participation.
Dr. Oguri is not as bad as ppl say. She uses the book a lot as she assigns readings and assignments. Quizzes are open book and at times even take home. There are 2 in class essays and 4 other papers. She is a tough grader but its to push you to do well on the WPE. Also assigns critical readings which are easy. Her final is awesome but i cant say it
good teacher that interacts with her class. not boring, keeps your attention. test are easy if you follow the study guide
Grades hard and lectures are hard to follow and lacks substance. If you ask a question she looks at you as if you are stupid. She also has favorites. Dont bother taking Oguri.
She is funny & leads very interesting lectures. GO TO CLASS, it's worth it. She's extremely smart & I learned a lot from her class. You don't really need to read the book, she only asks about 2 out of 50 questions about the book on her tests. Take great notes!
Great and very knowledgable teacher. Tests were easy. Just read the chapters and take good notes.
This lady is interesting. Asian American studies was not up my alley but, she made it slightly interesting. She can be lenient at times. Grading scale is not bad.
Great prof! Her lectures were like watching national geographic. I just sat in the front of the class, listened well, took good notes, and walked out with an A.
Ugh..despised this class. Not too much work but expects too much for a lower division class. Assignments arent bad but attendance is. Mandatory attendance check is implemented randomly throughout the semester so you gotta come to class every time to earn points. Makes some cruel jokes to our parents which I found VERY offensive. I wouldnt take her
Wonderful professor! She helped me a lot to improve my writing skills. I always look forward to attending her class.
she's really one of a kind. She expects a lot from you but her assignments are reasonable. Be ready to put a lot of effort into this class, because she really makes you think-no slacking off!She puts a huge emphasis on bringing your book to class and being very direct and to the point in your writing. I definitely recommend this class.
Theres only a few assignments, 3 papers and 2 test and attendance, but the lectures are boring and its hard to earn a good grade, she doesnt really say what she wants and doesnt elaborate on why you got the grade you got. The test are difficult so STUDY the study guide and the read articles. You have to put effort into the class, but its do-able !
I had her last semester. She's definitely a tough grader, but she well prepared me for the WPE. While all my friends are struggling to do theirs, she gave out extra credit for those who went and did it. There is a research paper to write that was 6-8 pages.
She made this class more difficult than any GE should be. Attendance is mandatory and she lectures without posting any notes up. The book necessary because of this and the exams are tricky. Two midterms and three papers but she's a tough grader. I regret taking this class.
You MUST attend all classes and take good notes to do well in this class. Take her at a time when you know you will always go to class and be awake. She takes roll randomly for points. For the 3 papers, be sure to analyze & relate observations to terms/concepts learned from class. Some E/C, but only helps with borderline grades.
Not the easiest GE professor but she's pretty good. Tests are easy if you read the book and take good notes. Shes pretty strict on attendance. Make sure to listen and purchase the two books cause you really need them for tests. There's 3 essays and make sure to have good analysis and comprehensions cause she doesn't grade easy on them.
She is very condescending and rude. I had to leave her 3 hour night class early due to a family emergency and she tried to tell me that I "couldn't leave." Her tests aren't difficult, but she grades her essays in a very strict manner. I don't recommend her.
She's really passionate about anthropology, but she's a little crazy. She will NEVER let you leave early. She threatens to make you sing in class if your phone goes off. Her class isn't too difficult though if you pay attention and study for tests.
Teacher has never taught this coarse before. She read from the book pausing every few seconds. she gave up teaching (although she was was not good) halfway through the semester and assigned students to teach the chapter.2 presentations with no prompt,3 tests, attendance points. She was a very bad teacher who ruined my enthusiasm for Asian philosophy
Amazing teacher! Although she's a tough grader, she is always pushing you to do your best. She's one of those professors who really care about your education. Some take home quizzes, strict on essays, but overall it's possible to get an A in her class. (Extra credit saved me). Too bad there is no more ASAM 100 after this semester.
She is really passionate about teaching & giving students a quality education. She is really interesting and lectures were entertaining, time goes by fast. Don't expect this to be a blow off ge class you will have to put some effort in but it seems worth it since she tries her best to educate students. I wish more professors showed her commitment
Class was occasionally dull, but she is a great professor. Go to class (every day!), take notes, (reading the textbooks really helps for the tests!) and you'll be fine! She has "Cultural Papers" which she grades a little strict, so talk to her about it if you have trouble. Other than that, tests are quite easy (if you study and read).
Class is super boring and her instructions are really confusng! Attendence is part of your grade so make sure you go cause she takes attendence randomly. Research project was hard cause her instructions were not helpful. Such a hard grader too. Must participate in class cause thats part of your grade too. Tests arent bad cause you get a cheat sheet
Touch grader! But she does it for the students benefit, give many opportunities for extra credit but most focuses on the essay. Participation is really important, the more she acknowledges the student, the more she'll like the student.
Extremly hard!Is not clear what she wants and answers student's question with another question. If she likes you you're okay, if she doesn't you're basically screwd.
Lectures were interesting and you definitely learn some interesting cultural facts but it is not an easy A class. But it is also do-able. There are 2 exams and the final but she drops the lowest test score if you complete all the assignments (Research Paper or Presentation, Project Proposal and Cultural Paper) and going to class is a must
You have to work really hard in her class. Three papers and three tests dont seem like much but they are very critical if you want a passing grade. I studied hard for all the exams and didnt pass one. Go to class on time for attendance points. Would reccomend her as a last resort professor, try to get into a different professors course if you can.
This class is not the most entertaining class you can take for critical thinking. The lectures boring since all you do is sit down and listen to her. Her test are easy and you do not have to thoroughly read the textbook (which i did..) She gives a study for each test, and you can use the back side of the paper as a cheat sheet. Overall, easy A.
Tests can be easy if you study. She lets you use a cheat sheet as well. The essays and research project were confusing. She is not clear on what she wants. Very tough grader. I sat down with her a few times regarding my project/outline and she wanted different things each time even after taking her recommendations into consideration. Bad experience
Getting an A in this class may be hard but it is not impossible. Takes attendance randomly. 5 grammar quizzes (lowest one gets dropped). 8 assignments: essays, 2 IN CLASS essays, a research paper, and short papers. Every Monday, you have "critical reading" due. You must work hard for your grade.
Decent professor who knows what she's teaching. However, she teaches many upper division courses and expects a lot for a lower-division course. Make sure to do all the extra credit assignment because you WILL need them. Work hard on your essays as all the little points will add up. She is a tough grader and expect to work hard if you want that A.
She was an absolutely amazing teacher, but you have to keep up with the reading and do the work to earn an A. If you actually pay attention, you can learn a lot from this class. Very interesting.
The lectures are very long and repetitive. There is a midterm and final which are essay based. Will give you eight essays a week before so you can prepare and will pick two the day of the test for you to write on. Lets you have a cheat sheet. Loves to talk about Asian and Jewish culture. An A is hard but not impossible.
There was not much student interaction throughout lectures which made the class very boring. However, she knows her stuff and although she is a bit dull it is very necessary to pay attention during lectures. Exams are based on book and lecture, 3 papers and a huge extra cred pop at the end of the semester. Also, BE IN CLASS!!
Professor Oguri makes this class pretty difficult. The grading criteria is clear but she is an extremely tough grader. Though her advice and grading is justified, I feel she grades too harshly for a 100-level course. There's quite a bit of work throughout the semester and even then you might not get the A.
She can be a bit dry at times, but she knows her stuff and I still use some of the tips she showed us on how to write better essays/research papers!
