Miss Lawson talked a lot and by the end of class I was nursing a sore writing hand! But the transition of events in her lectures were usually smooth and understandable. As long you know WHAT happened, it doesn't matter WHEN (sequence important but not dates). Notes are important, so is attendance (for notes). Offered gobs of extra credit.
good teacher, she, is a really cool lady. If you want to do good in her class, simply show up, to every class, and take a lot of notes. if you take good notes you'll do fine!!
I hate history! However,if you have to take a crappy history class, the prof. to take it from is Kara Lawson. Somehow, she made it sort of interesting. YES, there are a LOT of notes to take! BUT, if you are like me and you HATE reading history, Prof Lawson interprets the book to you and makes it as interesting as history can be. TAKE A LOT OF NOTES!
ms lawson seems like she could be a cool person, but her lectures are very stressful. more than talking she spends the whole time asking the students questions so u are constantly sifting through your notes so u wont look stupid. she also becomes verrrry unhappy if she notices u whispering or passing notes and she WILL notice.
Good teacher, Cool Class. Would recommend.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS OVER SUMMER! she teaches sooooo fast!STUDY YOUR NOTES!!! WRITE EVERYTHING DOWN. annddd she likes to make you feel dumb.
Well, unfortunately i cant say enough. But let me start by saying do not take this class. If you have the choice of a fiery death or this class choose the fiery death. The teacher is unreasonable, her dates if she gives them are inaccurate at best. Her history is not from any man made do****ents. Fellow students I urge you run, run far away
ALWAYS TRIED TO MAKE YOU LOOK STUPID & always called you out to answer if you had missed prior class. Her notes were tedious, but all the stuff she says is on the tests, so take a lot of notes. She grades fair, but tests are ridiculously hard. Gives one huge paper assign. and an oral report. Gives extra credit, but super hard. DONT TAKE!
She teaches very well! Be prepared to actually go to class and take a lot of notes though! History bores me but she makes it easy to understand and somewhat interesting. If you go to class and pay attention it is not hard to do good in her class.
Lots of Notes. Hard Tests.
Get ready to write lots and lots of notes!!!! Oh and don't miss class, not even once because you will miss alot! I missed one class and I learned my lesson. Ms Lawson lestures are not boring and I really enjoy coming to this class
She is very easy to follow. Simply do not be late, attend most classes, take notes, know the study guide and then you pass. 4 tests (including final) and one paper and one oral presentation. All easy, except maybe the paper which I suggest you start on WELL before it is due if you don't like to read historical documents!
Had 2courses during the wintercession & worked nights.Got straight C's on all my tests and I must've done okay on the oral presentation and the research paper because I miraculously got a B.I worked very hard and I think she was lenient on my grade because of my efforts. She is interesting, funny, sophisticated, and intelligent. I'm glad I had her.
Lectures must take notes
HIGH SCHOOL IS OVER GET READY TO TAKE NOTES AND STUDY, DO WHAT YOU ARE ASKED AND YOU WILL GET AN "A"
Professor Lawson had a reputation of being a "hard" professor. I took her Modern History class and she is one of the most down to earth teachers. Ask questions, and she'll answer. LOTS OF NOTES!!! Tests are somewhat hard, but if you take notes you will be fine.
She is one of my favorite teachers at HCC. She is in fact one of the most amazing, fun, sacastic, yet extreamily formal teacher i have taken. I took both her early and modern history classes. I received a B and a C. But only due to my carlessness. If you study, and listen to her lectures, and TAKE NOTES (perferaby type them)that helped alot.
Kara Lawson is great! As for people saying she makes you feel dumb...only if you ARE dumb..I mean seriously there were ppl in my class who didn't know who George Washington was..if you have a basic knowledge of US History you will be fine...sweet person and encouraging...very intelligent...I took Early and Modern Amer Hist with her and got A's
she can can be hard when it comes to grading
This is the only class at HCC so far that has felt like a college course. I liked it so much I am taking Early American History JUST to have Ms. Lawson again. She is very fair and very fast paced, but she is amazing!
take notes and study for the tests. a lot of information, but if you crave knowledge, you will not be disappointed. mandatory paper and presentation.
Attendance is key. Write down her every word. Study/memorize like never before. Use proper grammar on term paper. Don't plagerize even a sentence, she will catch you! Pay attention, you have no time to slack with her. Teaches history in very interesting way! Be prepared to work for your grade.
Very good teacher! She will help you with anything you need help on. Just keep up with work and assignments and you're sure to get an A. On our final exam our whole class got into a group and worked on it together, needless to say we all got A's. I would recommend this teacher.
Great teacher. Be in class, take notes, and study them easy A. Nothing complicated. She does require an essay and a presentation.
very helpful,
She is awwwesome!!! :D best teacher yet. Most important thing to do is go to class everyday and take notes. Effective and easy :) Take her!
Very dry and sarcastic, if you have a sense of humor she will entertain you and banter with you with a smirk on her face. Her lectures are LONG and IMPORTANT. I had to buy a laptop to keep up. Pay attention to her and as long as she sees that you are trying you will pass her class.
I loved her sense of humor, even being dry. Attendance is important because her lectures are vital. If you take notes you will pass her class. Never really used the textbook.
Shes cool nice lady kinda funny at times you Need to be there for her lectures cuz thats wat the exams are on also shes a little demanding from all the writing and presentations and thngs like that but nuthing to hard.
Absolutely the best professor I have ever had. Explains all assignments and does test reviews that will save your grade. Her notes are invaluable. All you have to do is take notes and do a little light reading. Her review handouts are very helpful as well. A knowledgeable professor for once!
Must attend lecture. She makes lecture interesting and to the point. Before tests, if you ask for review she will ask the questions on the tests and have students answer. There is a powerpoint, paper, and 4 tests. BE CAREFUL WITH PAPER! Make sure you write on RIGHT topic! Very nice, fair, but requires effort. Liked her alot
She knows the subject very well but as a professor I dont really recommend her. Her sense of humor is a bit dry and may lead you to believe she doesnt like to talk to you. Her class is not impossible but you HAVE to know the small details in order to pass her test. You will need to study for her test but other than that everything will be a breeze.
Professor Lawson is a fantastic teacher. She doesn't baby people, but she is always available for questions. Her syllabus is clearly mapped out and she explains in detail what she expects. She has a good sense of humor and likes to joke. Before every test she does a little review and takes the questions from the test. Definitely recommend her.
She was awesome very nice lady. Was very understanding when turning in assignments. Her lectures were fun and she kept them interesting so you wouldnt fall asleep and only assigned two things that she tells you about at the beginning of the year and gives you lots of time to do it.
Awesome teacher! took her for 1010 and 1020. You need to go to class because her study guides and exams go along with notes given in class, also you have to be there on test day or you get a 0 for the test. She is very fair and nice. Even offers extra credit on research paper.
Awesome Teacher. Seems to know everything about American History. She was nice and funny I would recommend her to anyone smart enough to handle the class.
LOVED this class. Mrs. Lawson is so intelligent and very professional. She definitely knows her stuff and I looked forward to each class. I highly recommend her!
Awesome :) Got an A!
I have Professor Lawson for AMH 1010 and AMH 1020. She gives very clear guidelines, 4 tests, a paper, and oral presentation. Very helpful, just ask! You must attend all classes, her test questions are based off her lecture notes. She talks fast so typing is preferred. Deff. plan to review roughdraft of paper with her. Overall I loved her class! :)
She is an ok teacher, she is not easy, she talks extremely fast, she expects you to know everything about her history class as if you lived it. She gives you no notes, you have to take all of them from the lectures and everyday taking notes that are ten pages long adds up. also her study guides are filled with terms to know front and back. I
Extremely good teacher. However, if you do not study then you will most likely fail.
This teacher is wonderful. She makes history come alive. However, if you do not like to study then do not take any of her classes. Mrs. Lawson is one of the best teachers I have ever had.
I took Lawson's AMH 1010 & 1020. She is awesome. I got a B in both classes. You do have to take a lot of notes and attend class. There is also one paper and one presentation. Without opening the text book and studying from my notes I averaged a B.
Great teacher, very clear about what she wants and how. Lots of notes - vital to the tests. Extra credit questions on tests. Presentation and paper. Textbooks are necessary. Ms. Lawson is very nice and teaches well. I would take as many classes from her as I could - and I'm not into history.
Mrs. Lawson is one of my favortie professors thus far. Take notes, come to class, and read the book. There are two papers. My advice to you: Start on the first one early. There are four tests. Make note cards and you will do well on them. She is a very helpful professor.
Mrs. Lawson was and is by far the best instructor at HCC. I've never met an instructor who actually cared about her students and the grades they were getting. It took her 1 week to memorize every class members name and made sure that she always made you feel like you were the only one in class. Yes, you have to be diligent and study but worth it
Fantastic teacher! I liked her a lot and would recommend her to everybody. Take really good notes and study for test. Don't slack off on the paper and presentation either, get started early!
I took her for 1010 and 1020. Smart woman and really knows her stuff, but she has high expectations and this is not an easy class. She really makes you work for your grade and is there to help you along the way, so do not be afraid to ask questions.
Learned a lot from this course! Lawson doesn't put up with any BS. The reviews she gives before each test are really helpful. She does make it a point to pick out individuals and ask them questions to make sure they are paying attention so be on your toes. Other than that she's fairly easy going. Her notes/powerpoints are good.
Amazing professor! I highly recommend her, but you do have to work for your grade. She knows her stuff and expects you to know it for the tests too, but she's very helpful and you can always ask questions. She does talk fast, so I recommend typing over handwritten notes.
Decent teacher in terms of what she covers and how she goes about it. But, if you do not put 100% effort with this teacher you will get an F easily. Be careful that you study for the tests allot using the guide, and be prepared for oral presentations. Otherwise nice teacher.
Take the IDS course with president scandals. Super easy. Everything is crystal clear of what needs to be done and i think there is only 6 assignments including a group project where everyone has to contribute to make a powerpoint. Got an A in the class very easy!!!!!
I took modern American history online with Ms. Lawson. It is an extremely difficult online course. Gordon rule paper with difficult instructions and a powerpoint presentation are two of the big assignments with weekly discussion postings. Exams are very difficult. She really wants you to succeed and is very helpful, but it is a lot of work.
Her online class is a bit ridiculous. We had to do a group assignment, all through emailing our group members. She is strict on grading. I got a 95% for not answering 1 question, but I was the only person who turned in 2 reports. Luckily the class is U or S for pass. The end assignments are super LONG, she expects you to evaluate everyones projects
I had her for modern American history. Grade based off 4 tests, oral presentation, paper and peer reviews. Tests easy if you study lecture notes . Peer review offers tons of extra credit. Her lectures are kind of boring.. but as long as you attend class and take good notes it'll be easy. I ended up getting an A. Highly recommend this class.
Really enjoyed this class! You have to take good notes in order to do well in your tests. The tests are pretty easy and she reviews before each one which really helps!
I'm not going to say this instructor is the worst i have ever taken, but she is very mono-tone, and fits a lot of information into each test. She will go through about an entire chapter in a day. I would suggest another professor, but if you have to take her, just keep focused.
Very mono-tone and boring lectures honestly. I did not enjoy this class and struggled. If you get distracted easily I recommend you not take this class.
I really didn't like this teacher. Her assignments are super confusing and she does NOT help you. I had her for an online class, which i do not recommend! She will not respond to your emails. And if she does, she is very vague. I was super disappointed, because I enjoy history. Maybe if you had her in class, she would be better?
She is a very tough grader, and will analyze your papers and assignments more than the average English teacher. Tests are hard, and cover an extreme amount of content with tricky questions and tight time limits. (I finished all 4 exams with seconds remaining.) She will not hesitate to slash your grades but won't provide much if any feedback.
Was really a good teacher to have. She has test and some might be hard, but are very easy if you study. She also gives extra credit on the tests. Make sure to take lots of notes.
Confusing. Test are 75 minutes & very hard. DO NOT take this class with her. Makes you feel like an idiot.
Extremely fast paced course, and long,mono-toned, scattered lectures. Tests cover so much information, it is hard to retain. She is a very tough grader, especially when it comes to the Gordon Rule paper. I would not recommend taking her for this course.
She very serious about teaching her history class, she is a very tough grader and i wont take her for another class ever again. Here test are very hard and she tries to fit 5 chapters in your head then expect you to study 5 chapters for one test smh
Save yourself the hassle and don't take this class. Test are ridiculous, and Ive used all the time allowed for each. The last paper she grades much harder than many english professors, and has a 3 page long explanation on the paper and what not to do in it. Very hard to follow instructions, and when asked she makes you feel dumb. Worst class yet.
She is very cool! Would take again. Took her for IDS very easy. Just don't ever be late. She really dislikes when people walk in late.
She is very cool! Took her for IDS very easy. Just don't ever be late. She really dislikes when people walk in late.
She makes me feel dumb. I had her in person I withdraw for personal reasons. Now I'm taking her for the summer and I'm like what was I thinking. The test are alright online. The Gordon rule paper and other assignments she doesn't explain it enough leaving ?'s to ask. I recommend for anyone to NOT take her. Even if a AMH is in Tampa take it there!
She makes me feel dumb. I took her a while back and withdrew due to personal reasons. Now I'm taking her for the Summer term. She doesn't say all of the directions to an assignment she says about half of it. Test are difficult she adds more work after a test. Also she is a tough teacher on grading a paper. She could of have me a B but gave me a 79.
she is so rude ! I wish I would have listen to the reviews ... I will NEVER take her again !!!!!
I actually really enjoyed her class. She's all business and doesn't have much of a personality but her lectures are very straight forward and organized for the most part. As long as you take good notes, you will get good grades on exams. She does talk VERY fast though and missing class is not an option if you want to pass.
Her syllabus is 16 pages long. You have to do weekly postings and she gives low grades on those. Every 4 chapters you have to do video reviews and I scored perfect scores on all of them. She has a major paper and isn't clear on the instructions for it. Test questions were confusing. No make up work allowed. Very hard class, I wouldn't recommend it.
Her lectures are veryyyy long and monotone. If you take notes and study, test aren't that bad. She grades harshly. Oral presentation and Gordon rule paper are major part of grade and she gives little instructions.
I almost dropped her due to other ratings, but I am glad I gave her a chance. Her lectures are long and tests can be challenging. If you study diligently every week leading up to the test you will be okay. She is very knowledgeable and keeps the class involved.
Was nice enough to let me redo my gordon rule paper but gave three days to do so then took over a month and a half to get back to me about it, on the last day of class basically told me sorry but I don't really like this one either. Had a B in the class ( with the bad paper grade) but because of the paper getting a D I failed the class entirely.
I took her online & passed with a B. She is a horrible instructor, she is EXTREMELY extremely rude and does NOT reply to messages. She does not give clear directions on assignments and then deducts points like CRAZY. Again, she does NOT reply to messages so asking for better directions is basically impossible. I would NOT recommend her ever.
very rude towards students asking questions. late responses to emails. oh, and she's very rude to student. her assignments weren't hard. passed with an A but she isn't a pleasant person.
Syllabus was 10pgs long literally! Ijs be careful!
Professor Lawson may seem like she will be an easy professor during syllabus week, but don't be fooled the class becomes nearly impossible. She provided ridiculous and lengthy projects without clear requirements. Lastly, she may tell you the grade you have is the final grade for that semester but I promise she's lying and will alter it shortly.
The IDS course is a pass or fail. All homeworks have to be completed with 70 or up. Will fail you for the whole class if one homework is below 70 out of the 5 or 6 homeworks. Does not care for the students side; will only follow syllabus and will fail you if even if an issue was out of your hands.
I personally liked her. Print out the study guide and have it with you before class and take notes based off that. Make sure to take notes on things she emphasizes because those tend to be extra credit on tests. When doing the in in class writing assignment, give as much detail as possible. Even if it seems stupid to add.
RUN VERY FAR AWAY. DO NOT DO IT. I don't even think I'd send an enemy her way. Her lectures are too crammed full. Her study guides are vague and will not offer help in person. Once asked for help, was told, "my method is not flawed. Your study method is the issue." Her explanations of projects were also vague.
I took professor Lawson's AMH 2010 class online, and may I just say, she is horrible. It is extremely hard to get good score on her discussion assignments for it seems to be my shortest and simplest responses have gotten the best scores. She gives horrible feedback when it comes to the peer review and the final project.
Just a lot to take in and doing the advanced summer course is not recommended.
She goes back on her word. Was told to redo an assignment and she submitted final grades before I turned in my revised version.
She is prejudice against hard working white students. She bullied and picked on me as a student and she was the reason I lost my scholarships as well as tore my 4.0 apart. Terrible professor she doesnt deserve to be an educator.
I took Professor Lawson for Early American History, Modern American History, and IDS. She will prepare you to affront 4 year colleges. She takes her stuff seriously and if studying is your goal, you will benefit.
Ms. Lawson was a hard grader! I thought I was taking history, not an English class. There were only 5 questions for each discussion board, and she wanted answers from the text book, but wanted everyone to add something different to each post. Beware- she doesnt accept late work for partial credit, so get everything done on time!
By far the absolute WORST instructor! Calling her an educator is laughable. There is no clear grading criteria, as it changes week to week. The tests are 100 questions of ambiguously worded sentences that you have to answer in 120 minutes. Dont bother to ask for a study guide, because she is too lazy to provide one. Avoid this instructor!!!
Will fail you for one assignment not completed.
Everyday you get an assignment. In the beginning they are okay but then they start getting ridiculous. At on each point you ave to give an extensive review about 10 students and their project. And she puts way too many requirements and has way too many high expectations. Do not take her. Literally ANYONE ELSE but her.
She was honestly a good teacher. Learned a lot from her but its almost impossible to get an A in the class. Excessive amount of notes need to be taken. Read before during and after class is expected. Tests are 85% of your grade. Not a good test taker.. then avoid this at all cost.
the strictest grader i've ever had and gives so much unnecessary work. i'm fantastic at history and with this teacher i finished with a 78. don't recommend at all.
She is a terrible professor. She is arrogant and condescending. She is unclear on her assignments and hand picks the students she will allow to redo their golden rule papers. She is rude and unwillingly to help.
This is the worst teacher I have EVER had. I did not receive a single piece of constructive criticism and she grades your grammar more than an English teacher. The assignments are redundant and the Gordon Rule paper is a joke. Kara Lawson should NOT be an educator because she is awful at her job. I love history and worked hard but only got a B+.
she should not be a teacher. She is rude and does not have a clear lesson plan. She is all over the place. She does not know how to teach, or grade the work. She makes up stuff to have a reason to give a lower grade. She gave me another students grade, when I let her know she got real ugly. She's a bad person all around. Her lesson plan is a mess.
She takes points off for stupid things and she focuses so much on grammar and punctuation even more than my comp1 & comp2 professor. the class couldve been so much fun but she made it a burden because its a no way that youd get a perfect grade no matter how much effort & time you put. literally takes off points like its nothing.
If you have another option for a teacher choose the other option!! She is a really tough grader and even if you do something right she'll probably fine something wrong with it. She gives good feedback, though once you use the tips she gave there still will probably be an issue with your work! DO NOT take the class if you wanted something easy!
Ever one I have ever talked to about the one credit hour class called Connect, has said it's a easy A, just basically like a intro to college, but for leaving the AA level. I log in and it says Presidential Scandals, my first thought was "crap I signed up for the wrong class & I need Connect specifically to graduate." It ended up being correct.....
Kara is super involved with making sure her students pass! She makes the lectures simple and to the point, allowing you to ask whatever questions you may have. We take a day before the exam day to go over the study guide! Take notes, some times she allows you to use them on the exams!
This professor makes it EXTREMELY hard to do well, even for a very disciplined student like myself. I worked my butt off and still ended up with a B. Nothing is ever good enough for her and her tests are so hard and there is so much reading. This class has nothing to do with major so I was upset with her and my grade. Put the time in or u will fail
Unless you study history religiously, you will not receive an A. I took her advanced summer class and I wish I checked rate my professor. She grades you as if you have a PhD in American History and have practiced for her class your whole entire life. Please, please, PLEASE, take any other teacher if you would like to receive helpful feedback.
If you have no prior knowledge Or background knowledge of the subject then youd probably struggle in this class too. All she does is give the lecture. Doesnt really help all that much. Youre quizzed every class. And yes she will go through a whole chapter in one class. If you dont take good notes or struggle with history at all dont take her.
No makeup assignments, lots of extra credit. Difficult to communicate with, no comprising with her regardless of circumstances.
Great professor who really gets into history and knows her stuff. Unfortunately I had other classes as well as life so I got too busy and put this one on the back burner so I failed.
This could've been a fun class to take but not with this professor. If there are other options, choose someone else. She's smart and knows her stuff but she will cover a whole CH in one class, tough grader, and pop quiz giver. When the crisis of COVID-19 began, her class only became harder. She gave so much work, it was ridiculous.
I signed up for the Pres. Scandals class thinking it was going to be fun. I was so wrong. This lady was a tough grader and critical as can be. I get that she knows her stuff but grading on every little thing is stupid. I am taking this class for credit not grade.I need this class to pass. Every little thing she criticizes. Do not take her class.
She was my first dual enrollment teacher. Honestly she will probably be the worst too. She is a really tough grader and does not account for the fact that students could have put alot of time into doing a project or peer review. If you want to get an A or even a B DO NOT TAKE HER
Take a look at what other people are saying here. She is an incredibly tough grader. Not only is she a tough grader, she gives zero feedback on how she graded the assignments. As far as I can tell, her grading criteria is made up on the fly and will dock points on a whim. Pick a different professor.
Makes you work for your grade , pushes you to do better . Make sure you complete all assignments to pass and youll be fine.
I took the two week course so the class was fast pace. Although I enjoyed the overall topics of each assignment, the professor was very tough on grading. She was also not specific in her instructions (at least to me) and did not offer any constructive feedback when asked. I did not believe the reviews and had to see for myself. Well thumbs down.
Grading system is absolute trash, spent most of the time trying to decrpyt the little feedback she gave.
Horrible. Would not take again
