She is a bad teacher. she doesn't teach anything. Only criticizes for what you do wrong. She does not know what she is talking about. You have been warned!
She is passionate about certain subjects but is more interested in getting her students into a debate than teaching english. She never really follows her own schedule. She expects everyone to act like an english major even thought she is only teaching a Freshman Composition. Makes you buy all of these books for her class that you never really use.
I have not learned a thing being in this class! If you want to acctually learn something about English then DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS!!! She never tells you if your right and if she doesnt agree with your view points you will FAIL!!!
Got a D on my first paper. She actually reads your essays- THOROUGHLY- Got B's on all other essays because I took her suggestions. Very intelligent highly educated woman. Uses lots of BIG WORDS. You can easily get lost in her class if you don't bring a dictionary to decode what she says. You really can learn from her if you are up to the challenge.
She met with me on her own time when I needed help, gave good suggestions on how to improve. Alot of people who maybe didn't like her probably didn't follow directions, and then wondered why they didn't get easy the A.
She got students to discuss topics, and then got us writing. If you cant write, don't show up, or don't try... don't expect an A! Very nice instructor. Helpful and available for individual meetings to discuss papers.
I loved her class. Always willing to help students with papers. If you do not have a willingness to THINK, you need to find another teacher. If you want a mediocre teacher, you'll need to look elsewhere. Great teacher. I will recommend to others.
Great teacher! Very dedicated.
Very good instructor. You'll need to work for your A. She treats you like your an adult in a university - not high school...
She's a feminist. Enough said. Do not take her class, unless you are also one. She will disagree with your viewpoints and you will fail the essays, if you are up for debating every useless topic go ahead and take this class, but if you want an actual Comp II class, look somewhere else.
Chose essays that even her professors didn't fully understand. have to wright 7 5page essays.
It was a Comp II class but she treated it as if it were something way more. She thinks that she is very intelligent & uses big words to sound "smart". She is very opinionated and likes only her perspective on things. My parents who both have their phd's found her assignments & reading very hard to comprehend. So pointless. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
I agree with most of the negative feedback. I had to drop her class because it was just to difficult for me to please her. The complexity of her style sucked the life out of me. One of the papers she assigned I picked the topic she asked me to. I got the paper back with comments telling me that I didnt follow the criteria she wanted. DONT TAKE HER!
This is not an easy A. Dr. Ryan-Johnson is a professor who cares enough to push her students to succeed. She has been the most influential professor in my academic career.
not helpful at all, very fickel on deadlines also, does not care, heard she was awesome and found myself having to be on blackboard every sec because it took so long for her to post it was crazy
You must work hard if you want a good grade. Turning work in is difficult because sometimes it's due in person, other times on blackboard or on safeassignment. She does challenge you to think critically. I had a D, did really well on my final portfolio, and I raised it to a high B.
Dr RJ has to be the most influential teacher I have ever had. She may seem scattered at times, but she knows what she's talking about. She's always willing to help students as much as possible. Her assignments are easy-- just follow instructions.
If you want to learn how to be a better writer, take this class. If you don't want to work hard and you have a hard time with constructive criticism then do not take this class. Not easy, but you always know what to expect Took 4wk summer class. (REMEMBER, this is college and she treats you like it is.)
Read your syllabus, follow directions, substantiate your arguments, cite your sources, act like you're in college... and you will do well. (Notice the misspellings in the poor reviews: "fickel" & "wright"?? Geez.) She shows good dedication if you put forth the effort and interest!
Not the WORST instructor out there, but there are definitely better! She never sticks with anything, and is constantly changing due dates to better suit herself. Does not care about her students and treats you as if you are still in elementary-not in college. Always gets off topic and talks about politics. Take a different instructor if you can.
Extremely hard and frustrating teacher! Everyone in the class was failing, until the end of the semester. All of a sudden she started handing out extra credit and grades went up. Hmm...strange huh? Steer clear!
Worst teacher I have ever had. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! She makes the class impossible and is not helpful at all. She gives more homework than you would have time for and NEVER gives full credit for anything. Praises people she likes and could care less about everyone else.
In all honesty, I hated and appreciated this class all at the same time. If you don't want to do work, don't take this class. You're syllabus is FULL of assignments, whether it's readings, essays, rough drafts etc throughout the entire semester. And while it's so easy to see too much work as a negative, it provided a challenge that is much needed f
I took an online class with her and she was rude!
Worsgt teacher ever!! She was rude and you could turn every assignment and still barely pass. Take another teacher! She does not help students and could care less.
I took her Comp 1 class and she treated it like this was graduates school. Very tough on grading and the other posts are right. You do need a dictionary when she makes comments on your papers.
She was very hard. I think she expected you to have a journalist degree before ever attending her class. I took her Freshman Comp I online and she was not helpful at all. Everything was your fault no matter what. She was VERY strict. Do not recommend.
I would not recommend this teacher to anyone. All the assignments revolve around professors who fail students and get away with it, so unless you want to comply with her strict rules and play the game, choose another professor.
Her classes are not for the faint hearted. If you're expecting an easy A, or a professor who will hold your hand and make you feel all fuzzy inside; go somewhere else. Ryan-Johnson is serious about the class, and expects you to be the same. Most of the students commenting negatively probably just couldn't handle a real college class.
If you are an idiot, don't take her class! If you are a good student, and want to improve, you will do well. She is a college-level teacher, not some stupid high-school babysitter. If you don't like to be challenged, don't go to college. I learned a ton from this teacher and got an A!
Great instructor - if you want to learn. Follow directions, read the assignments, do the work.
Professor Kara Ryan-Johnson is a great teacher! She is challenging and expects you to try your hardest but if you want to make an A, you will. She will answer your questions and she is very encouraging. Would highly recommend this teacher!
Professor Ryan-Johnson is a very splendid teacher! I really enjoyed her class. In writing 2, she assigned 4 essays the entire semester. Gives lots of options on essays and is open to creative ideas! Would highly recommend her!
Not helpful at all. Does not return emails. Comments are very hard to understand simply due to the way it's phrased or the words she chooses to use. I loved this subject now i despise it. I have always done extremely well on essays...did terrible on hers. I even got help from a PHD degree holder in THIS subject and they agreed she needs to quit.
This instructor is very knowledgebale and I would not consider her comments hard to understand BUT she lacks the key element that makes a truly GREAT teacher: inspiration!! She does not have a desire to help her students. IF you think you may EVER need any help or guidance in this class do NOT take her! She'll make you LOVE your other instructors!
Do not take this teacher. She is a frustrating person. Thinks to high of herself and mainly considers others to be stupid. She was not willing to help when I had questions. Her subject matter is very dull, and her assignments gave me headaches. Avoid her!
Excellent instructor. Rigorous.
Excellent instructor. Rigorous, but good. Come to learn.
Very detailed... got great feedback and not a lot of homework only reading assignment. I would recommend:)
I had no problems at all in her 1113 class. She was available for conferences, and helped me with my writing when I met with her. In class, other students asked stupid questions, did not do the work, and did not try. That is not Prof. Ryan-Johnson's fault. She is a good instructor if you are smart.
She is a very good teacher with high expectations. She expects you to put in time & effort for college credit. If you are looking for an easy way out, take someone else. I got a good grade, but I did the required work, and feel good about my effort and the class.
Excellent professor, but come to work and learn.
If your looking for a class that's easy, with minimal work, then it's best that you look elsewhere. Dr. Ryan-Johnson is a quality professor who teaches things that will prepare you for university level classes. Patience, hard work, and detirmination is needed to make it through her class, but very rewarding. I am a better student because of her!
If you are willing to work, yes I said work, and complete all assignments you will do fine. She is tough in grading, which simply means you have to do the work. She loves to teach those who WANT to work.
The Best Professor at TCC, she raises the bar. She constantly challenges her student to be the best that they can be. I have been at TCC for 2 semesters, she is the BEST professor. She has taught me how to critically think and how to be a successful college student.
Best Professor at Tulsa Community College. If you don't like Dr. Kara, you are lazy, she gives you all the tools to succeed and she prepares you for REAL LIFE. She is challenging because she loves her job and she wants her students to not just get an associates degree but go on to get a bachelors, masters, or PhD. The best professor.
So, I had Kara's classes at TU (university of Tulsa). She changed my life for the better. You have to critically read and write. You must be ready to proofread and revise. She makes you consider what other teachers dont. IF you want to rate her class, first ask yourselves, did she open my mind to the world? Did I learn to write better? I did.
This class was not only not needed it is also extremely dull. If you know what you want to do and got good grades last semester then why be forced into this class. She expects too much out of a college readiness course and over reacts when kids don't do a small assignment like not teaching the class for the day
I really liked Dr Kara. She was my first online class and she made it very smooth. She is very helpful and as long as you listen and do the work you will be fine.
Prof. Ryan-Johnson is the best English instructor that I have ever had. She is challenging, yes, but she is also motivating. She is very insightful and is wonderful at what she does. I am so glad that there are educators like her who truly want to help enrich the lives of their students. She has inspired me and taught me a lot. Take her class!
WORSE TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD. SAYS THAT SHE GRADES OBJECTIVELY BUT GRADES SHOW THAT IN FACT SHE GRADES VERY SUBJECTIVELY AND UNFAIR AND IS NOT A VERY PLEASANT PERSON AT 8 AM
Very talkative. She talks the whole class period.
I found her very inspirational, helpful. I was able to meet with her during her office hours, and she helped me out. There was nothing dull with the subject matter at all. Excellent teacher - just don't take the class if you can't think!
She is a very good professor, but you need to be willing to think critically about your own writing and do the followup work it requires to improve it. For instance, the person who commented about our class (English 1003 - from 4/29/12) incorrectly wrote "worse teacher" below. This person needs to think about their own writing a bit more!
She is terrific.
I found that this class prepared me for transferring to OSU. The instructor was very knowledgeable and helpful. I learned a lot. No problems if you do the work, read her comments on your papers, and then revise.
This is probably one of the worst professors I have ever had. She thinks way too highly of her freshmen level general education English class. The expectation of freshmen college students at this community college does not match the level of the class.
This class lived up to my expectations. It was a challenging, college-level course, and was on par with other courses I have taken at the college level. I am planning to transfer, so I know that this teacher prepared me for future courses.
Although this class was technically easy, i found that the teacher as a person infuriated me. the entire semester was spent whining about the broken school system. she grades subjectively, argues everything very poorly, and above all, sucks every impling of creativity out of the work. she was helpful though.
This instructor focuses on having students write about the injustice and justice of current issues, which in return gets very repetitve were many students are uniterested on writing about the topic.During class discussions she gets off topic when discussing certain assignments. Also, She grades very subjectively and papers are graded very late.
This instructor focuses on students writing about the injustice and justice of certain issues. Which in return gets very repetitive and makes students uniterested in the class. Also, she grades very subjectively and grades essays late without giving any feedback to students. Do not take this instructor.
If you are looking to better yourself and get an education this class is for you. If you just want to get a piece of paper take a different class. Professor Ryan-Johnson is helpful and clear about what she expects. The class may seem difficult because its all essays and essay questions but you are able to revise your papers for an improved grade
Professor Ryan-Johnson is a great professor for anyone ready to work hard and improve their writing. If you are planning to transfer to a four year university she is the teacher for you. If you just want to move to the next class and skate by, this is not for you.
Professor Ryan-Johnson is a great professor if you are looking for a challenge. She will help you if you ask and is very clear in her expectations. If you are just looking for an easy A this is not the class for you.
Do the work and you will do well. Professor Ryan-Johnson will meet with you and provide feedback on papers as well as revise them to improve your grade.
This class did not seem easy at first but the professor allows you to revise you essays to improve grade. Also allowed us to use reading notes for our tests and quizzes. Overall great class to improve writing skills and be prepared to transfer to a 4 year school.
Easy class. notes for tests. lets you revise essays to raise grade. schedules conference sessions to go over papers and other assignments.
Attendance is a must and so is the assigned reading. Other than a fair amount of reading this course is easy. She lets you use reading notes for quizzes and tests. Allows you to revise your first two essays after she meets with you to discuss the essay. Easy class that will prepare you for the future. I highly recommend Professor Ryan-Johnson
I am having a difficulty with this class. I am trying my best and she keeps saying my writing is bad and I have emailed her she did not respond. All of my other classes I have A's and B's except for hers. If I have to retake this class I will consider my professor again.
Do not take this professor! Does not respond to emails, does not return graded assignments in a timely matter and said she was too busy to meet with me when I asked for help. She acted like I was a nuisance when I asked for help.Contradicts herself in criteria for homework constantly, she needs to realize she works at TCC, not Harvard.
Horrible ! She was no help ! The class is pretty easy, only probably I had is she didnt explain work well. When I would ask questions it took her days to respond !
I took this professor while still in high school and she was very strict. Make sure you use the rubric. She was decent in responding to email but gives very little help. Expects you to read her mind on every assignment. Don't take ever!!! She grades like she teaches at Harvard.
If you do not make the grade expected on pre-test then get ready to be harped on over things incessantly. It got so bad I had a whole team reading and rereading my essays before I submitted them. It was very stressful and in the end she started grading along the lines I thought more accurate after finally proving I wasn't dropping the class.
I took Comp 1 with her, and she was always helpful. We had reading quizzes, but they were open note. That made the quizzes easy, but some people didn't take notes. She answered my emails - no problem. And I was able to meet with her when I had questions.
In her online class, we read three essays and had to write about them. I received lots of feedback and was able to revise. An easy class if you are good at following directions.
I'm a good student, but I would not recommend her class at all. Her essay prompts and directions will leave you unsure what to do. She is very cocky about having a PHD. Switch professors if possible. Wish I could.
Professor Ryan-Johnson is a good professor!! She's tough and expects you to use your brain. She really expects you to network with your fellow students. I really enjoyed her class because it forced me to think outside the box . If you're looking for an easy A, this is not the class for you, but if you decide to take her, you will enjoy it!!
Highly recommended professor. Interactive lectures that encourages critical thinking
DO NOT take her class!!! She is very rude and only cares about her own views. She will try to make you sound stupid during class discussions after asking for your opinions. I wish I would have saw her reviews before taking her class. By far the worst teacher I have ever had in my life.
I tried to reach out about clarification for a few assignments and I got no response. Absolutely no real help at all.
lots of last minute work. like readings posted the night before class around 5 pm.
Great professor. Cares about students - especially those who are willing to learn.
She wants you to learn there are many quizzes which help your grade if you aren't great at writing papers. She is opinionated and if you ask stupid questions that she has already covered she can be condescending. One of the only professors i have had that truly intimidated me, but i learned a lot in her class. Overall i really enjoyed her.
I took her comp class online and 10/10 would recommend her to anyone. If you e-mail her, she usually replies the same day or next and offers as much help as she can possibly give. However, some of her assignments seem to not fit in a composition class.
Although, she is a tough grader, Mrs. Johnson's class was extremely helpful to my overall writing. No online class I've ever taken had so much help from the professor. Email her and she will get back in touch immediately. I learned a lot from the readings, too.
I took Prof. Ryan-Johnson's Comp 1 class this past spring. I did what was required, participated, did the requested revisions, followed the syllabus - & got the grade I wanted.
Easy class, nice instructor - helpful.
Learned a lot about my writing. Good class, good teacher.
Prof. Kara was very good. I would recommend her to anyone who wants to transfer up to another college after Tcc. She extended my deadline for an assignment, And is understanding about things.
I had prof Ryan-johnson for strategies, and it was good. no problems.
Professor Ryan-Johnson helped me find my strengths in her comp 2 class. She is extremely reasonable, but expects your best at all times. As long as you show up to class and participate she will help you in every way that she can. I enjoyed her class very much. She has a passion for what she does and it shows from the first day of class to the last.
I've taken plenty of 3000 and 4000 level classes, and just took this class for some easy credit (per an advisor) this was one of the hardest classes I've ever had. If this is a class for incoming freshmen, it would make me no longer want to continue with my education. I took it as a 4 week summer online, maybe she's better actually in the classroom
Get ready to WRITE. This professor is a tough grader and makes you write essays frequently, but she made me such a better writer for it. She really pushes you and made Comp II a cake walk for me.
I was required to take Academic Strategies for scoring in the developmental category for math. Professor Ryan-Johnson is an english professor, therefore expects her AS class to write essays, do book reports etc. I found this very unproductive considering I scored college level in reading and writing. Don't take her if you don't need help in English
She is very unclear as to what the essays need to be written over. Also, she does not grade fair either. She stated plagiarism was used in a summary of mine and once I emailed her and asked her to specify she never responded. If you are looking for an easy class or one that is fair, I would look elsewhere. Do not recommend!
There was a lot of work involved outside of the classroom not good for a busy student.
Lot's of reading and writing, but it is a Comp class. Gives you good feedback on your essays. Participate actively in discussion boards for better grades. Assignments are two page summaries or 4 page essays, plus discussion boards. Be sure to turn in work on time each week. No tests for online class. Would take her again.
Doesn't give helpful criticism, told me I was "way off" and that was it. Gives zeros if she feels like you made same mistakes as last assignments, even though she doesn't grade on time so you don't know what mistakes you made on the first assignment until after you've turned in the next. Sets her students up for failure.
Pros:: Gives solid feedback Approachable outside of clasd Wants you to understand to the topics.. Clear grading rubrics, even walks through in class!! Cons:: The readings are pdf's, but veiwing them that are all tilted so reading them online is hard. Sometimes hard to know which readings to respond to for Reading responses.
I had to take her for my reading foundations two class. I personally don't like her as a person but as for a teacher she's okay. Gives wonderful feedback just not at a timely manner. Would I take her again? Probably not. If you are looking for a lot of reading and discussion then this is the class for you.
doesn't realize we are in a remedial class. grades off of higher class grading scale. thinks shes the only class we are taking.
I would recommend taking this teacher if its the only class you have and your only responsibility. She does not care about her students. She gives short, sometimes unrealistic deadlines. She is late on grading assignments. This class caused me more stress than I have ever experienced. I regret taking her class and will not make that mistake again.
Dr. Ryan-Johnson provides clear and concise instructions on how to be successful in this course. I learned more about effective writing than I have in any other English Compisition class. This class made me a better writer, and I would definitely take additional courses from Dr. Ryan-Johnson. I'm disappointed I didn't get her for Comp 2.
Dr Ryan-Johnson is an awesome professor. There are reading assignments and several writing assignments but, it' Writing 2 which is what you are supposed to do in this class. She's an awesome teacher, she takes time out to help you. She prepared me for my Comp 1&2 classes. Thank you Profess Ryan-Johnson
This Professor is VERY vague in her instructions for assignments and hard to get a hold of. I have tried many times to reach out to her for extra help and to clarify what the assignments are over, all I get in return is rude emails. I would not recommend taking her online course at all.
The instructor really helped me improve my writing. I feel much better prepared for transferring to OSU. Everything was pretty clear in the syllabus, instructions, due dates. I recommend this instructor if you are wanting to transfer up.
Great professor. I followed instructions, the syllabus, and had no problems with her.
Prof Ryan is a good teacher and pretty shows students respect everyday. She is a good grader and will do her best to help you out, but she expects you to put in your best work. Shes very willing to meet to talk and go over stuff. One of the best professors Ive ever had, shes really helped me gain confidence in my writing abilities.
Tough class. Doesnt explain much. You read a lot. Overall she prepares you for a University!
Definitely a great professor. Knowledgable. Gives good feedback for revisions. Would definitely take her other classes.
She's good, laid back, is a fair grader. You read American Lit up to 1865. Its a good class for transferring to a university.
I believe shes a good teacher. However, she grades very intensely without much feedback or justification and gives a heavy amount of homework. This is just my experience.
She is probably one of the worst teachers I've ever had. She has terrible communication skills, her assignment instructions are inconsistent, she takes FOREVER to grade assignments. She is a tough grader and does not tell you where your corrections need to be made. I do NOT recommend taking her.
She is the WORST teacher I've ever had. She does not have good communication skills at all, she takes forever to grade assignments, and she makes it confusing when to turn things in. Do NOT take her.
This professor is excellent at communicating. I loved how challenging it was because the grading criteria is very clear. She grades based on improvement and participation. If you fail this class it will largely be your fault for not managing your time. To clarify, I took an online, eight-week course and it helped develop my academic writing.
I took her Comp I online. She is a very tough grader on essays. I did very well in my high school english classes and she basically contradicted everything that I learned in the past. She expects you to know everything without her teaching anything. No real feedback on essays other than her writing "No!" and little tick marks on your paper.
I took her Comp 1 Online for 8 weeks. She gives very little feedback on essays. Everything she "taught" was completely different from what I had learned before. I have taken classes online and 8 weeks before, and they were not this hard. I would not recommend her at all.
If you don't mind hearing the professor talk about politics and you like reading, lots of reading, take this class. It's easy, just pay attention and show up.
Great professor. Really cares. Very helpful for transferring.
Most of her classes consisted of tangents about politics and war. Expect to read about four books, and reading responses every class for the first 8 weeks. She is very understanding though, and if you just talk to her and do your assignments its an easy A.
Good teacher who not only helps with improving your writing style/quality, however also promotes critical thinking skills. Class is very discussion based.
doesnt really teach well, just expects you to know the material. very bland, there isnt very mush enthusiasm or emotion in the lectures making them rather boring. essays are a big grade but you dont really know what she expects until she grades them.
Dr. Johnson is very quick to respond to any needs, very detailed in explaining issues when helping you be successful in her class, and always offers resources and feedback. I could not have chosen a better online professor. She has surpassed my expectations and I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for a high caliber professor.
If you really want to be a better writer take this lady! She could teach at any college she wanted to but she's not into the whole snooty college scene. She's down to earth and cares about her students. I can't believe how much time she spent helping me. Before her class I was a crappy writer, now I feel confident to transfer to OU.
Great Professor! Does makes you work for your grades by asking you to read and write, posts syllabus with plenty of time, makes notes next to grades online so you can know what you need to work on. Encourages communication with her so you can be successful and she will make an effort to work with you because she wants you to get that degree!
dr. ryan-johnson is a great teacher. she gives good writing advice, has interesting assignments, helped me to think, and wanted me to succeed.
Professor Ryan- Johnson is very caring about her students, and gives each person an equal opportunity. You can tell that she cares about what her students have to say. However, she is a VERY tough grader and definitely makes you work for it. She is very lecture based, and often rambles and gets sidetracked. Expect a ton of reading. SHOW UP TO CLASS
Prof Ryan-Johnson was tough. I only got a B+ in the class but this is one of the best ones I've taken so far. I didn't start really trying until the second half of the class when I realized I wasn't doing well, but after going to talk with her in her office hours, she helped me. Yeah shes tough (some people here point that out) but it is worth it.
Online class. She's a good professor, good feedback. Helped me be a better writer.
Online class. Helped me be a better writer. No problems.
Amazing professor. She has the most detailed blackboard page. Everything very well ser up for her online classes. She cares lots about her students. We wrote on things that mattered to us. Good feedback.
I read the reviews @ Dr Johnson and spoke with her after the first assignment. That really helped my grade. I understod what she was looking for and she even helped me with following assignments. Tough, fair and really smart!
great teacher, helpful
Do the work, collect the grade. She's probably one of the better professors - especially if you are looking to transfer to a four year college. And no, attendance not required for online. She's willing to meet outside of class, and is always there for you during office hours.
Requires 2 cheap textbooks. If you do the work in this class, you will pass. She is flexible and understanding. I would definitely recommend her!
Dr. RJ is an amazing professor. I was very nervous after reading up about her as her bio is a little intimidating, but in the end I was very thankful to have had her. She does require quite a bit of reading, bit it was beneficial to the end of the course. Always make sure you read the instructions thoroughly and do not procrastinate. Do the EC!!
I do not recommend taking this class online, and if you do, don't do an 8 week course. especially if you work full time and taking other classes. 1-2 papers a week, A LOT of reading, strict grading. I asked for help and clarification multiple times and all she told me was to refer back to the syllabus or assignment sheet. no help at all.
I hated her class so much! If you take her don't take her online course. She never responds to emails in a timely manner, and never informs her students on what's going on in the class. Also, you don't know your final grade till the end of the semester because she just adds points up all together at the end of the semester and adds it to your grade
One of the worst, if not the worst, professors I have ever had. 1-2 papers a week that have very vague instructions, and will count off if you do not have the same opinion on a topic as her. The class is also very political and doesn't feel like a comp class, more like a political science course. Would not recommend this course to anyone.
Dr. Ryan-Johnson lays out a great course for people who are willing to work hard and want to grow their writing and mindset. However. To do well in this course you can not be shy to ask question in an open forum, must be able to solve your own issues. You dont get emails back but she will respond to forums. The class will stress you to the max.
If you are a conservative, avoid her at all costs. She only assigns reading that is in line with her far-left political beliefs. You will have to either pretend to be a liberal or debate your professor for a semester. Her class is also unreasonably difficult. This class took up more time than any class I've ever taken. Don't take if you are busy.
This professor was extremely vague on directions and gave little to no feedback. She wont respond to emails and expects her students to just figure it out. Zero guidance even in the beginning of the class for students who are likely taking one of their first college courses. Highly DO NOT recommend.
I have completed Dr. Ryan-Johnson's Honors Comp 1 course, and am currently enrolled in her Honors Comp 2 course this semester. If you are wanting an easy-breezy Comp course, she's not the professor for you. She is political, but you're in college. You should be ready to converse in all your classes. She will challenge you, but for the better.
I took Dr. Ryan-Johnson for Comp 2. I really did not know what to expect and was overwhelmed in the beginning. However, Dr. Ryan-Johnson was so helpful, compassionate, and caring with her students I knew that I had picked the right class. This class will not only challenge you as a reader but as a writer too.
I had Dr. Ryan Johnson for my first college course. I absolutely recommend her. She's not one to just hand out passing grades, but she builds the platform you need to succeed in her class. I was comfortable and felt secure knowing that our assignments had clear expectations. My outcome was rewarding. She's a solid professor. 10 10 would recommend.
There was a ton of reading, so I would not recommend the course for a summer class unless your schedule is not busy. Prof was very sarcastic/condescending in her feedback. She makes her opinion clear you will have to revise your essays. Even if you do well, she still expects you to revise because of "self-improvement." I do not recommend her.
Dr. Ryan-Johnson gives sarcastic feedback on your essays. If you do not share the same beliefs, good luck with your writing assignments. All the instructions are very vague and confusing. Does respond to emails occasionally but expects you to help other students instead of her.
She grades tough, and I did not learn the material covered in this course in Comp 1.
I work full time, and yet you have easily 10 hours of homework for every assignment. The main book you read is taught in political science classes; I don't feel like I learned anything. Time frames are insane to the point where I've been forced to kind of throw assignments simply because I don't have time. This class is good if you don't work ever.
My class was blended, both online & in person. Attendance required, but she was understanding when I had a conflict. Some of the reviews here call her political - but she is open to diff perspectives but asks ppl to support arguments thru their writing. Its not a bad thing... When i had a conference w her, she was kind, caring, gave good feedback
Some classes I've recently taken online were very unorganized. Prof Ryan-Johnson's online class very the total opposite - very well organized. Definitely would take again. Textbooks were cheap. Interesting class.
This class was very interesting and meaningful. The professor gave us academic material that helped us develop our critical thinking and reflect on relevant social problems. I recommend this class to improve your writing, express your thoughts and vision of topics as relevant as justice, injustice, morality, and social problems.
Honestly, If she taught another class that I needed, I would take her class in a heartbeat. She is very fair with her grading. Lectures were good, stuck to the syllabus- no surprises. Advice to the student: 1) Do the work, utilize the writing lab. 2) Do the extra credit, 2 separate opportunities during the semester. 3) Ask questions!!
I had Professor Ryan-Johnson for Comp 2 class this past spring. Great class. She is such a cool professor. Definitely one of the best professors at tcc.
I took Dr. RJ's Composition II Class. She will let you know everything that she expects in her syllabus and announcements. If you read her instructions carefully, you won't miss anything. You will develop critical thinking skills and come out of her class a better writer if you put in the effort. I would take her again if provided the opportunity.
This was a difficult class to keep up with but if you have the determination to do well, your grade will reflect that decision. There is a lot of reading but I feel like I improved significantly while taking this course. This is not an easy A but you will come out of this class a better writer.
Professor Kara Ryan-Johnson is a fantastic Professor. This class improved my writing, which is a foundation that I will use in and out of the classroom. Look for this Professor when enrolling in classes, you won't be disappointed!
Prof R was great. This class was great, it looked tough at first but turned out to be a lot easier than I thought it would be. I learned a lot and would recommend this professor to anyone.
I've taken Dr. Ryan for Comp I and Comp II - best instructor I've had at TCC. As expected, there are weekly readings (about 10 pages) and discussions in class. Just one research paper to write. Excellent feedback. Class is partly online.
Hello, I left this course with so much knowledge about the critical thinking writing process. Dr. Johnson is worth the challenge in order to grow. I recommend her teaching style, and the text she chooses for students to study. It is a challenge and there is a lot expected of you, but you will be better for it.
I really enjoyed this class. The assigned readings were interesting and thought provoking. It is not the easiest course, but the work is absolutely worth it. I finished the semester feeling like I actually accomplished something beyond the relief of just passing a class and being done with it.
There is a lot of reading in this class and it is not one that can be skated through. She is clear from the beginning what she expects of students and what they can expect from her. I loved her classes. If I had a question she was easily reachable and helpful. Her feedback is direct. I would take another class from her in a heartbeat.
Definitely not an easy-A professor, but that's what makes her classes informative yet challenging. If you're able to finish the semester with some hard-fought work and papers, you'll come to find that you have learned more from this professor than you have from any others in the past.
She was kind of a hard@ss. she would give us 300-word essays due at the end of the week and then for our midterm she jumped up to 1000 words and our final was 2000 words with a 5 min presentation. all of her stuff felt like busy work and her grading scale didn't make much sense.
Don't take this unless it's the only class you take for the semester. Expect a heavy workload with little instruction. The curriculum was geared towards their personal political views. Prepare to twist yours if you want a good grade. I've taken many classes and written tons of papers. I have never received such low grades in my college career.
I took this Comp 2 class online. The books were cheap - and not textbooks, but real books (which were very interesting). There was a midterm, but it was open book. I felt that this was a real college class. It will prepare me for my transfer to a 4-yr college. Good class, good instructor
Loved this class and this professor. I got good feedback on my writing. Midterm was open book. Wish I could take her class again. Helped prepare me for transfer to OSU.
She does not foster an engaging learning environment of students who what to participate. She is condescending to her class and treats her students as if they were still in high school. She is a very unclear communicator, which makes it difficult to know when due dates are. Additionally, good look getting in touch with her outside of class.
This class required a lot of reading. I enjoyed the books she picked out. I had some difficulty reaching out to her outside of class. Overall, if you do your work, you will be fine. However, it might be hard to bring your grade back up if you miss something. There are not very many assignments. There are only two big essays.
Only downside for this class was the amount of reading. Otherwise, she is AMAZING and so intelligent. Sometimes when I write, I feel like I just want to say words with no cohesion, and she really helped me make sense of things. Her in-class discussions are very fun as well. Highly recommend!!
The classroom environment is very nice and helps foster student engagement with each other and the material. The reading material she picks is very interesting and could be uncomfortable for some people, so be aware before you take her course. She also teaches you how to write cohesive sentences. If you want to learn how to write, take the class.
Every day I had to go to her class was another day I considered faking my death and move to New Zealand, changing my name, raising sheep and cows, and learning a different language as to not have to go to her class. I almost considered driving off of a bridge. Oh, also she discriminated against me for having obsessive compulsive disorder. LOL!
She is very specific and clear about her grading criteria, which helps A lot! She has grading rubrics for each of her assignments. It breaks it down very well with little examples. She is very passionate about literature and it makes you feel passionate too! She cares a lot but she expects a lot out of you, too. But no more than your fair share.
Prof. R's class was challenging but rewarding. The weekly readings and discussions were engaging, and I appreciated the helpful feedback on my writing. To ace this course, I found unstuckstudy and the free class textbook essential for study prep.
She didnt communicate clearly, she expected me to know something that was never even implied and when I didn't know it, she gave me a zero and said, “Out of fairness to other students, I can only give you partial credit” for my resubmition. What about out of fairness to me?
At first, I questioned this class because it seemed to be full of reading and writing assignments. However, once I adjusted to the schedule, I found it to be enjoyable and manageable. My biggest compliment is the material taught in this class. I learned very valuable concepts about justice and morality, and I feel smarter as a result.
She expected us to work a lot on our own, and the assignments she said she'd help walk us through; it felt like she gave us a rubric and expected us to figure it out. It was heavy on lectures, and she'd go on tangents about random things a lot.
I definitely let the bad reviews worry me. It's true that there is a lot reading (most I did the right before the assignment for that chapter was due), but the book was interesting enough. Her layout and assignment directions were clear (though she was difficult to get ahold of if you take her online class) Overall, I enjoyed her class!
I took her class online and it wasn't a lot of assignments. She grades you by interacting with class mates and writing assignments . You will have to read some books to get through the class but the books she assigns you are very interesting. Overall she's not a difficult teacher in my opinion and seems very genuine and wants everyone to pass.
I took Dr. Ryan-Johnson's Honors Comp 2 and her class genuinely changed how I approach writing now. She's very fun and engaging in her lectures and opts for class discussions on the written material. Most of the assignments are in-class writing with a clear rubric. She's also very willing to work with you about due dates if something comes up.
