She gets really into her lectures, and gives examples about everything even if its straight forward stuff.
She manages to make theory interesting! She always gives examples to make concepts clear. Read the text for a better understanding of the material, but most of the test questions are based on the class notes. I definitely would recommend her!
Very nice, beautiful, young woman. Her slides were short and simple, and her speaches were detailed and to the point. As long as you attend and do your work this class is quite easy.
Very good teacher with clearly outlines lectures and slides for her presentations. Class is great with clear notes and very helpful for exams. The midterms were easy if you went to class and simply looked over your textbook as its mostly based right out of it. Videos shown often in class which tend to be on the exams. Great teacher
Her enthusiasm for the course material makes attending class a lot more fun and interesting. However, she is very unhelpful and doesn't like answering emails. She's a very picky marker, and her expectations for exams are unclear. If you're slow with finals, don't take this class.
Excellent teacher! Had great examples for terms and theories. First midterm was relatively easy, second one was not. Go to class and take notes!
Great prof made the class interesting! She gets very into her lectures which makes them easy to listen to. Midterms were quite easy. I recommend this prof to anyone taking sociology!
Amazing prof! I only took the class because I had to but she made it my favorite class! Lectures are very entertaining and crystal clear and she will use any second available to answer questions after class. Note that it's important to attend class as she tests you on things only shown there. Best of all she encourages all constructive criticism!
A really good prof. Good at keeping you interested and engaged at 8:30 AM. Would recommend going to class though because she tests on some things discussed there. Easy to get an A+ if you attend class and read over the textbook.
Kara was one of the best sociology professors i've had during my sociology degree. She is extremely approachable and willing to watch her students succeed. If you attend class and read the textbook she will make theory interesting! I strongly recommenced her!
Really interesting and dynamic lecturer. Very friendly and explains everything very clearly. I definitely recommend her for introductory to Sociology as it gives you a great base to learn from, because not all sociology profs are this good.
She's very clear and asks for students opinions on her teaching a lot to make it the best experience for us. The tests are easy as long as you study and at least skim the book.
Thought I would enjoy this class but it's just terrible. Maybe on MWF it wouldn't be too bad, but listening to this woman yell into the microphone for an hour and a half first thing in the morning is painful. Course material is less then interesting, and studying is brutal because there is a lot of reading. Wouldn't recommend to a friend or enemy
She is an awesome prof. Always made the class laugh and made concepts and expectations very clear. As long as you attend class, you'll do good.
She is very good and makes the lecture interesting. Best sociology prof ever!
Posts powerpoints on PAWS. Shows videos and gives some information that is not in the powerpoints so you may want to attend as to not miss those. Didn't find that attending was crucial as she tests more from the textbook than anything. Her tests were weird and not easy. Asks things that you probably wouldn't think were important. Study the text!
Tests were really hard and was barely even on the lectures. Not very approachable. Scary and loud.
Dr. Somerville is a phenomenal prof!! Her lectures are very interesting and she tries to expand on ideas and give new information. I found that her tests were very fair. It is important to go to tests because we watched videos and she brought new information that was not found in the textbook but was on the test. Best class of the semester!
Professor Somerville's enthusiastic style in the lectures really spices up the fact that she's teaching an intro course. She is concise in her expectations from the class on exams. There was one question on a midterm that a lot of students got wrong, and she humbly conceded that the result probably indicated a fault on her part. Sociology at work!
Took her forever to answer emails, too quick before and after class to approach her. She does post all notes to paws, it seems like an easy topic to cover. As for when tests come, no matter how much I studied her notes and the textbook I failed. Cant understand the topic enough. Kara worded her exams in a very difficult format.
her lectures were clear easy to understand, but exam questions were hard
States throughout the course that she tests on theories, concepts and contributing theorists in order to understand sociology as a whole but when it came to the tests she ended up testing on random statistics that are fluid and ever changing. Her facts in her notes also did not coincide with those of the textbook. very confusing for exams.
She is enthusiastic about her staff and very clear to understand. She struggles hard to make you have deep understanding of social issue. Her tests are challenging, doesn't matter how hard you study but here is the trick, look for her previous exam from a friend or from student union help centre. she repeats word for word.
She has very interesting lectures and gives very fair tests. You do need the textbook as not all the material in the tests are from the lectures. I would definitely take one of her classes again.
I think she is charismatic and passionate about what she teaches. She is educated and capable of succinctly answering questions. She's easily one of the best first year course profs I've had. Her soc 112 class is comprehensive, and the content is very valuable. I believe most courses should require this type of content as a prerequisite.
For her tests they are hard but I felt like if I actually studied for them I could have gotten 100%. Also I would recommend going to class and reading the textbook since she tests you on stuff from the lecture and the textbook. Also I thought that she looked like professor Sybill Trelawney from Harry Potter and I was waiting for my prediction.
Prof Somerville, in Soc 233, is great & very nice. For every concept taught, she is able to explain it clearly and in ways that are understandable. Tests are super easy if you understand the information. 2 assignments (essays) that are easy as well. Posts powerpoint notes that she used so if you have to miss a class, they're there for you.
Kara is a great and helpful professor. Her lectures are clear and easy to follow, it is all laid out well in the course syllabus. She really cares about students learning the material and the tests are very fair
Amazing prof, she understands what it is like to be a student and helps you out whenever and however she can. She is very knowledgeable and tries to make you love sociology just like she does. Tests are fair, however they contain multiple choice and short answer so you have to study.
I took her Sociological Theory class, she made it as interesting as possible -- knowing she was teaching some fairly bland material. Would take her course again, work load was reasonable and exams were fairly easy if you studied the main ideas thoroughly.
I absolutely loved this class! I have never enjoyed a sociology class before, her lectures were very well done and interesting. Kara is very kind and caring and is amazing at making sure her students understand the content well. Her tests are helpful and fair. I wish I could take every class from her!
Prior to taking this class I thought Sociology would be dry and boring. But after taking it I find myself thinking about the content daily and applying it to my life! Kara is definitely to thank for this. I would highly recommend this class for an elective. The class has 3 midterms and a final, super easy to do well!
Tests come from both the notes and the textbook so there is a fair amount of material, however it is very straightforward. 3 midterms and 1 final which makes it easy to get a really high mark. Kara explains concepts very well and shows videos to further get the point across. Would highly recommend this class and this prof!
Awesome prof! Let me write a midterm on a different day because i had a provincial game at 8:00am that morning. Good lectures with good explanations of each topic.
One of the best profs I've had, she understands the material really well and is always open to helping others if they don't understand a topic!
Solid prof choice. Very nice and supplements the lectures with videos. Tries to encourage discussion, but it was a big class, so thats hard to do. Three midterms and a final, but its mostly multiple choice. Final was harder than expected, but not undoable. Do your readings. Overall, a good class.
Kara is such a wonderful person and wonderful teacher! Her lectures are always super interesting and it is obvious that she really understands what she is teaching, and subsequently making the content easy to understand for students. She is a very fair marker and i found her class very easy to do well in!
Kara's class was interesting to take because she is very passionate about it, and other than that she made sure everyone would get a good grade always asking for feedback on tests and whatnot.
Honestly the best class you could ever take! She is genuinely one of the best professors I have ever had in my entire life. Her lectures are super interesting and captivating. She is always tending to students and listening to what students thought of her tests. Going to her morning classes was never a struggle for me, and that says a lot.
She is the best prof I ever had! Her slides and lectures are easy to understand. I used my textbook for extra notes & when I miss a class; but attending to her lectures were almost enough to pass the class. She is very approachable and will genuinely help her students! Midterms and finals were easy, MCs and short answers. Best class ever!
Kara is the best professor I've ever had. She's not afraid to talk about controversial subjects from all perspectives. The most interesting class I've ever taken. Two MC midterms and a final. Midterms are easy if you go to class, pay attention and take good notes. Textbook is not necessary. Kara makes you think about life and society in new ways.
Kara is a very nice prof and is very passionate about sociology. her tests are fair and she tries her best to prepare you for them. However, her lectures were very hard to sit through. she goes way too in-depth on slides and sometimes would get through 3 slides in 80 minutes. i think she said"i'm straying away from the textbook"50 times per lecture
Dr. Somerville is an amazing prof. Super nice, smart, and actually cares about her students. 2 midterms and a final which were quite easy and she always clearly tells you what will be on them. Definitely take her for any soc class.
A VERY nice professor. She's honestly the first professor I've had who actually seems to care about the students. She teaches with such passion and enthusiasm, and it makes the entire class easier to focus in. I usually hate taking morning classes, but I actually feel excited to go to her class. Definitely recommend. Would take her class again.
Unlike other professors Ive had, she is actually willing to own up to her mistakes. We had a midterm and almost all of the class got one of the questions wrong. Rather than simply blaming the class, she, unlike some of my past professors, stated that she probably just didnt teach it well enough and made the questions a bonus. I respect her.
One of the least empathetic Profs I have had at the UofS, passionate about the subject but not necessarily about your success in the class. Not the very clear with her instructions at times. Will be avoiding her classes from here on out.
There were weekly quizzes which were not too hard. Overall, I found the class challenging yet interesting. she could be a little tough if you are not ready to do weekly quizzes and weekly readings.
Prof doesnt do any lectures & talks to students like 3 times the whole semester so hard to have a convo with her and if asking for help shell just tell you to read text again. MUST read the whole textbook and kind of hard to know whats important and whts not bc she just tells you which chs to read and tests you. so will avoid her from now on
She was good at explaining things and had fair exams and assessments but taking the class online for me wasn't fun.
At first, I hated this class but that was mostly because I was skimming through the readings. Overall I loved Professor Somerville, she was always there to help me and video call me if I needed it and really cared when you reached out to her. You do have to read everything in the textbook is on the quizzes and exams (even the pic descriptions)
Kara is a fine prof & you can get a good grade - but you must read the entire textbook. Her lectures were somewhat pointless as she would just tell us that more detail would be in the textbook multiple times. Can be a bit dry at times too. Overall not a difficult class but the online version was not fun. 2 midterms, 3 page paper, 10 quizzes & final
Dr. Somerville is an amazing lecturer, she teaches with passion and the topics she covers are interesting. Though to do well you must must read the textbook, attend lectures, and take good notes. Holds office hours every week and gives clear instructions of what will be on the exams. Would definitley take a class of her's again!
I personally despised this course because of the lectures and exams. Lectures often became dry, and while I will admit Professor Sommerville is very passionate she often lacks solid explanations. Exams are poorly written. The mean for the exams was usually a failing grade. The textbook material is very important so be sure to read the textbook.
I thought Professor Somerville was a great prof. Attendance is mandatory as she shows videos that are only shown in class and not posted on the notes. As well she provides a lot of extra info in class. Textbook is also required for sure in this class but she did a great job and I thought it was an extremely reasonable amount of work.
Show up to class, because she shows lots of videos that are relevant to the exams. Going to her office hours is also helpful, as she is amazing at guiding you to do what you may be lacking. Amazing professor!! I found her research interesting as well.
While Professor Kara is knowledgeable my experience was disappointing due to her lack of empathy and understanding. Despite explaining my unavoidable situation she was unwilling to accommodate me which felt cold and dismissive.Unable to complete a midterm worth 25% I had to drop the course.would not recommend.
Her course is poorly structured with very few tests and assignments so the grade drops really low if you score less on one test. She doesn't offer bonus assignments to make up marks and grades really strict, she doesn't empathize with anyone and refuses to give extensions or retakes without considering the circumstances. I would not recommend her.
Somerville did her best to make her class engaging and actually wanted her students to succeed. Graded on 2 midterms, an assignment, and a final. The first midterm was hard (didn't know what to expect) but the second was much easier. Assignment is easy if you follow the guidelines. Overall a good class if you attend and study.
Interesting lectures and very clear that she is passionate! Shows videos in class that show up in tests and final. Required textbook asks for latest version, but you could probably get away with getting an older version. She refers the textbook a lot and is featured on some questions on the tests. Topics were really fascinating and delivered well!
She was really good but she grades you really bad after all your stress You have to do all your might in your tests and assignments and write what she wants apparently
Trust me, just don't. Strictly no deadline extensions even for out of hand circumstances and no assistance.
She went through the content very well with most of it coming down to reading textbooks to fill the few gaps. Midterm 1 had more textbook content that was on the test than midterm 2 from my experience. But I would say she keeps her lectures engaging and was a good professor overall. The midterms weren't bad but remembering the videos made it harder
Found Dr. Sommerville's lectures to be very engaging and the information included on exams aligned with the content taught in class. For a class this big, she did a great job of keeping me engaged and I can imagine that things would be even better in a smaller class.
Doesn't have a good grasp of race relations and fails to fully comprehend the subject matter as it pertains to minorities.
As a student registered with AES due to chronic disabilities, I left a lecture early one day while she was showing a video because I had a doctor's appointment. Prof Somerville loudly sighed and said, "I don't know why I show these videos when people just leave!" She then continued to make passive-aggressive comments about it the next day in class
Realized I was unable to take a midterm worth 25% because of an error with my AES accommodations. They told me to talk to Prof Somerville as soon as possible. I visited her office almost 2 hours before the exam, and she shooed me out the door and wouldn't even let me get a word in. I walked up 11 flights of stairs to talk to her, and left sobbing.
You have to (pretend) to share her opinion to get a good mark on assignments. Very political but her final was easy if you just memorize the textbook definitions.
This professor made me feel like I was doing absolutely the worst in class with zero chance at passing, causing me to be the most stressed out I've ever been in university... My final grade was a 67%. Go figure.
If you're planning to take her sociology 221 don't. The final is ridiculous, she expected you to answer four questions all regarding guest lectures that we had 1-2 months earlier and expected you to cite specific findings and research from them. This would have been fine had she not told people during the guest lectures to not take notes.
lectures are interesting and tests are reasonable
My favourite class I'm taking. Would 100% take again!
I really like this class and will be putting an effort into taking more of her classes in the future!
Great class! Best so far this year.
only problem many had with her is that she never gave any assignment, this term i had two midterm and a final exam. i didn't do bad but i didn't do as well as i liked. get the textbook it ‘s literally reason why so many people pass this class, her slides are just unfinished chapters of the textbook (so useless basically). #boring-estclassoftheyear
literally so unentertaining hated this class, the one class that i dreaded going to, she is interesting if you're as boring as this class
This class isn't hard IF you read the textbook and remember it like the back of your hand, not many people were present during her lectures as they are straight off the textbook. ATTEND lecture after the first midterm, the second midterm is a lot about what she talks about in class and a lot of videos in this class is crazy, pay attention to those
Very Knowledgeable with her topics, but she can get quite political at times and you'd need to follow her in order to pass. And was quite petty when people left her class, making small comments...
Very lecture heavy, if you miss any it's hard to keep track of things
Although attendance was not mandatory, she played videos that were important to the midterm and stated that she would not release the videos on Canvas. She did a wonderful job of expanding the textbook meanings during our lecture time, and she used a lot of examples that were helpful for our midterm.
She's quite nice and seems to care about her student. But i can't really say it was a great experience, she's pretty tough on her exams. Read the textbook and attend classes for videos (there's a lot), after midterm 1 try to attend as much as possible. You need the textbook, and try to understand (not memorize) it
Loved this class! Hope to take more classes from her in the future.
I prayed everyday that my bus would crash so that i wouldnt make it to her class
Need to attend lectures in order to do well in this class, but the lectures were insightful and easy to follow.
The textbook is so so important, the midterms had lots of material from just the textbook. The final exam was extremely easy, consisting entirely of multiple-choice questions. Overall its an easy class and almost guaranteed a good grade if you study for the exams. There are no assignments, so your grade is based entirely on your exam scores. 7/10.
My experience in this course was just okay. The textbook is important and you actually need to read it to do well. I wish there were more assignments, because there were only 2 midterms and a final so you don't get any chances to boost your grade. The lectures can feel quite repetitive and boring sometimes.
Really awesome proff, easy to study for on midterms. Main thing is just to attend class and stay up to date on readings.
