I really dig the ocean and all the cool animals in it and this professor shows us lots of really excellent photos.
Good class excellent teacher. Be ready to read the book and there is a quiz everytime, but it's not hard. Very interesting and I look forward to go to class. There are also a lot of field trips.
This teacher is very involved with her students. She tries very hard to get to know them and give each one one on one attention to assure they get the material. The tests are a little hard you really need to read the book but she is fairly leinent on all assignments. She tries different things to keep you interested in the subject.
LOVE the ocean and what's in it - HATED this class
DO NOT take this class. There are so many rules and regulations, and she treats you like you are 5 y.o. Quizzes every class pretty much and 4 field trips, including 2 on SATURDAYS!!!!! HORRIBLE!!!!
Run, run, run awful class... toooonooooo much work for just one unit.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! She will treat you like you are a child. Too much work, papers to write and field trips to take. This is just a one unit class, but you will have to work very HARD!
Honestly, the class is not an easy A, especially for 1 unit...however, I learned SOO much in this class. I thought she was a total sweetheart and really knows her stuff. Quizzes every day so not coming to class isn't an option...but school is meant for learning ppl, and Karen Baker is a great teacher. :-) If I could get an A, so can any one.
she is BOOOORIIIING! her class basically doesnt teach you anything, i went to class and was confused the whoooole time. its hard to get a good grade in her class, and you doo sooo much work!!! its stupid, her tests are ridiculous, i did not enjoy this class at allll!! i dont recommend her, pick another proffessor. if you want to pass
Prof. Baker is a great teacher. she is funny, insitefull, knowledgable and her class is eyeopening! she has a true passion for marine science. Her class is well worth the taking--i took it for an elective!
Great Teacher there to help you, teacher aides avaliable for your help if you have any questions they are always avaliable to help. Quiz every week but they arent hard, theres a lot of work for a 1 unit class but the class is enjoyable and fun!!
Another average professor. Her lectures are sometime fun, while most of the time it will bore u to sleep. Her class requires u to do lots of works: mostly journal. Her exames are very tough. Words like "All the above" or "Except" will get you all the time. Gotta study extra hard for B. Extra Credits look small but are very helpful, try to do all.
This professor is amazing. I took this class before with another professor and failed. Baker keeps it interesting and doesn't put you to sleep!!!!!
Do the work, get the grade. Everything is laid out for you to succeed if you want to. Very organized. Many opportunities for extra credit.
She's a fabulous teacher. Her class is very interesting and really fun! You should take it!
CLASS WAS BORING! I'm not sure why she lectures SO MUCH in a LAB class-probably just to keep us there for the full 3 hours when labs only take half an hr to do. Threatened us if we were "mean" to the TAs. Was not helpful at ALL and does not care about student's wellbeing! Expects us to wear armors when all we use in the lab is WATER! dont take her!
Don't be misled by this class (or any lab class) being one unit. Lots of writing and brain use required. Good, clear explanations. She and TAs are helpful. Lab book written by OCC profs is poorly edited. Def take the oppor to get EC as she and TAs are sticklers on grading. I got 25pts EC. Weekly quiz isn't bad if you read the 3 pages of the lab.
I took 2 classes with her. She is great very into making you have the same passion about the subject as her. Very helpful. lectures kinda boring at times. wants everyone to succeed and pass her test and helps individually if needed.
average teacher, kind of easy. she is passionate about subject. i took the hybrid online/ on campus class and i found that the quizzes were difficult. would not recommend taking online class.
She was so awesome. She made the lab much more interesting and she was completely okay if lab mates copied off of each other. She's pretty easy and very helpful. Her quizzes are pretty cinchy as long as you look over the lab beforehand.
I had Mrs. Baker for lab. The class was pretty interesting. I would recommend her based on my experience.
Great teacher! Attendance is a must since majority of grade is quizzes that can't be made up. Very helpful. Responds to e-mails. Easy to talk to. Joviality makes class fun and interesting. Make sure your lab write-ups aren't just summary!
this teacher was awsome ! really funny, her lectures sort of relate to online quizess which were easy if you did the study quizess. I would have gotten an A or B in class if id remembered to do study quizes right before the actual quizzes, and the exam questions come right out of the quizess, so just remember the interesting stff, and your good
Prof Baker is awesome. Easy, cool, and wants you to pass. Definitely a good choice if you want / need to take this lab.
I LOVEEDDD PROF BAKER! she was soo much fun and i looked forward to every lab and lecture. i recommend doing every possible EC. go to class, do the quizzes, do the lab write ups, and briefly study 4 the test and your home free! i basically got a A+ in her lab and next year i might be a TA for her!!!
Attending class was mandatory and all she did was review the text book provided slides which was the same text if you read the book. She also required that we use the electtronic clickers which she only actualy setup twice during the entire session. A MAJOR waste of money.
I took her lab and I am very glad that I did. It was so much fun and she made it very interesting! You should try to be in class everday otherwise you may miss some important information, but it's so interesting that you never want to miss any days. Some quizzes can be kinda tough, but if you pay attention and do your work you will be fine!
Very helpful and gives you lots of extra work to pass the class. She gives you on-line quizzes that help with the exams. class is a review of the textbk reading. Bk she uses is very clear. I hated Bio and now I like it! taking her class was the best thing I did...
Very helpful and gives you lots of extra work to pass the class. She gives you on-line quizzes that help with the exams. class is a review of the textbk reading. Bk she uses is very clear. I hated Bio and now I like it! taking her class was the best thing I did...
Do online quizzes and you'll be good.
do not get the book; powerpoints reflect the book. do the quizzes! her tests are similar to the quizzes. she talks a lot about her kids. she's a funny woman too. 3 exams, 1 final, 4 journals, quizzes, and attendance make up 770 points
Great class, very interesting. Karen is a good teacher and is very helpful. Would recommend this class to anyone who is interested in the world around them and how it is changing. Online quizzes from text and online reading assignments, so make sure you know how to use Blackboard! In class group projects are also very helpful. Take this class!
Karen is an amazing teacher! She is very nice and funny and makes her lectures fun. Her tests are easy if you study. She puts quizzes up online, so study them then you will pass the tests with no problem. There is a lot of note taking, but it is worth it. She is very helpful. One of the best teachers! I would take her classes any day!
The class overall is really easy to pass if you read the book, do the online quizzes, do the journals, and show up to class. She makes the dry topics more interesting to learn about. I hate science but she made me readjust my view on the subject. Tests are a reflection of the online quizzes. I passed the class with 3 D's on my tests. Awesome!
Professor Baker is a great teacher. I never expected a boring class and learned a lot from her just from lectures. The book is helpful but probably not necessary to pass the class. Just study online quizzes are you'll do fine.
She was pretty entertaining through her lectures. Usually I find biology pretty boring, and it was, but she found ways to keep it lighthearted, at least. She had four one-page-long "journals" due on a current biological event which weren't bad at all. I got C's on most of the tests and forgot one journal and still got a B because of the lab.
Go to class, pay attention. Use your textbook to answer the online quizzes, study and you will pass with an A. She is fun and very enthusiastic about what she does and it makes science more bearable for me.
I felt like there was a lot about oceanography, which is understandable because she also teaches that. Her lectures were very interesting, though, and she always tried to keep people awake by making jokes.
She's a great professor but if you're not interested in oceanography I wouldn't recommend taking this class. Just keep up with the reading and do the online quizzes or at least pay attention to the lectures. You have 1 midterm and a finals.
It's not a class where you can get easy A, but it's not impossible to get A either. The class is time-consuming! You will have to do more than just taking notes and taking tests. Organize & submit a journal, do current events, group projects/presentation, online quizzes, book reading is a must. Prof Baker is really nice though!!
It's an easy class. There is no test. Just do the pre-lab, lab, write up, and study the lab prior to taking the quizzes. Attendance is mandatory! Make sure you come to class in time, or else you will miss the quiz (which start within the first 5 mins of class!!). 1 Quiz = 5% of your grade. Class is fun and prof Baker is nice.
Great class overall! The tests are 90 percent from the quizes.. the other 10 percent is from lecture. She is very nice, but the lectures do get rather boring. Overall I would highly suggest this professor. On the easy scale from 1-10 i would give it a 8.
He lectures were pretty interesting. Just don't take her morning class because it can get boring. Didn't even show up much to her classes but still did well on the tests because of the quizzes she posts online. Quizzes are exactly like the exams, just study them and you'll be fine. She lets you drop one test if you take all the tests. Fun, easy
Her exams are mad hard. but the rest of the class is a breeze. just show up. pay attention. take notes. and you're fine. i didn't try and i got a B.
I took the Honors Lab, and LOVED it. It's a lot of work (10-15 page lab report per. week), book report, presentation, 2 field trips....WELL worth all the time & effort! Karen is a fun, sweet teacher who clearly loves the subject she is teaching :) It's mandatory to buy a new Lab Manual (about $45)
Not into oceanography but a great class in the end. Karen is passionate, funny, relatable and intelligent. Take the online quizzes & STUDY those questions for an easy A on exams. Easily predictable and structured class (i.e. syllabus). Spread out work load makes for a smooth semester.
Take the quizzes, read your notes in class, review the Key Concepts and you'll earn an A. I passed with a 92%. Highly recommend taking her course. No complaints.
dont take hers! Sooo unfair, she changed her syllabus twice this semester. The second time she changed, it was right before the last test! so strict! NO extra credit and NO curve. I got 4.0 last semester, because of her i am gonna get a B!! Her lecture is okay, but the test is not easy!
Incredibly easy. The class includes on lines quizzes, online assignments, three exams, a paper, and a presentation based off of your paper. Tests are based off quizzes, lectures, and the textbooks. If you are interested in Marine Science take Karen. I ended up with a B.
Syllabus got changed a few times during the semester. The percentage of the class got changed last minute, which screwed me over. Study the quizzes cause lots are on the test. She is funny. Class is kinda boring sometimes. Grades mainly rely on tests, no homework.
She was a really funny and genuine person. Her tests were moderately difficult--if you pay attention in class and take good notes, you should do fantastic.
Can be boring at times (class was in a huge auditorium), but knows her stuff.
Professor Baker is really funny and obviously loves Oceanography! I really loved this course! The tests aren't too difficult as they mainly consist of questions from the online quizzes. She makes the lecture entertaining, but it can be a little boring at times. There isn't much extra credit and no homework. I definitely recommend this class!
Ms Baker is incredible. I took her Oceanography lecture class & her Oceanography honors lab class. She was always fun to talk to. The lecture class had over 400 kids but her teaching style keeps you involved. The honors lab class is very difficult but rewarding. Weekly lab reports averaged 10 pages. You learn to do it though and it becomes easy. :)
Somewhat challenging A, guaranteed B. I got 2% from extracredit and i passed with a 90. Just do the online practice quizzes at least 3-5x before the exams. Take the final, its the easiest exam. 5 total exams, she drops the lowest. Its not a cake in the walk for an A.
I totally recommend this teacher and class. It is very easy. You just need to take the online quizzes (which don't count as a grade) and you are guaranteed a B on each test! a little boring at times but great to bring up your GPA.
this class is an easy B/C if you just study the quizes. if you want an A, take good notes and buy the book. a little more work compared to other GE's, but still easy.
Pretty easy course. If you do poorly on one of the first five tests, you can take the optional, comprehensive final to make it up.
Take the quizzes on blackboard! YOU WILL GET A GOOD GRADE. If you are not happy with the grade take EXAM 5, the accumulative test, it seems hard, but it was easy and studied the quizzes online and went from a d to a c, and the test only took me 5 min to finish..its that easy. It's a cool class but the lecture can be uncomfortable and boring @ times
The greatest mistake Ive made in this class is didnt take practice quizzes for the first 2 exams. I would have got an A if I did. 80% of the exams are from practice quizzes, if you read the book more (like i did in the first 2 exams) sure u get an A on exam. atmost 5xtra pts more from recycling. Interesting class tho it gets boring at times.
Great Teacher! Simple and straight forward. Just take the quizzes on blackboard and use those to as study guides.
It's a lecture hall of hundreds so it's pretty boring, especially in the morning. But make sure you take good notes. Take the practice quizzes online, make flashcards of the ones you don't understand, and practice those till you get them cause it's the exact Q's on the test. Book isn't necessary but nice to have. Easy class, but don't be lazy.
Really easy class. Just take the online quizzes and good notes and you'll be fine. 5 tests and the lowest gets dropped.
The class itself isn't too hard, but she is ridiculous. She didn't respond to any of my emails The class is ONLY based on 4 tests. She will make a scene for every student who leaves and has asst check attendance always, but doesn't even giv a grade% for it. I worked hard to receive an 88.5% and always showed up. She couldn't even round up. AVOID!
Class is indeed boring(I fell asleep sometimes) but she is still a good Prof. Always encourage questions and willing to answer them clearly. Also, contents of the tests come mostly from those online quizzes. Study them carefully and you will get a B for sure. A-student will need to read book more and take good notes. Easy class for a passing grade.
I BARELY got a B with an 80.7%! That's only because I took her not-mandatory quizzes online and memorized them because she adds most of the questions to her 4 tests. That's all I did. If you take good notes, you could probably get an A, but she's so monotonous! BORING. Book recommended but I didn't buy it. I didn't put a lot of work in this class.
70-80% of each test is on the practice quizzes. Memorize those and it's an easy B. The rest comes from the reading; understand the important elements like scientific terms or famous people and you'll be able to pull off an A. She gave us 2% extra credit as well.
To get an A in this class you do have to work for it. I read literally every single page of the book and got an A. You could maybe swing a B if you just did her quizzes online but she mixes up the wording on the actual tests to trick you. I learned a lot though, mainly from reading, her lectures just go over the pictures and charts from the book.
5 exams (including final) and one is dropped (including final). They consist of 100 questions each and MOST OF THE ANSWERS ARE ON THE BLACKBOARD QUIZZES. Seriously, all you have to do is memorize those quiz questions and answers to get a B. Extra effort is required to get the A, you need to know what makes that false quiz question true, etc.
Study the online quizzes she provides on blackboard. They aren't for a grade but they make up 90% of the exams. If you only study those and do ok on them you will get a B. if you pay attention in class she'll tell you whats on the exams and get an easy A. Loved the class and the prof. Extra credit for recycling, and DO NOT BUY BOOK.
This class is a guaranteed B as long as one studies the quizzes on Blackboard. The lectures were rather boring and really didn't help much. You do NOT need the textbook. You'll be fine without it. Just study the quizzes repeatedly and you'll do fine. I ended up with an A just by doing the quizzes. The class got extra credit for recycling.
-4 Midterms, 1 Final -Final is cumulative -Lectures are okay, they're usually boring, but you'll get a laugh out of it here and there -Study the quizzes on Blackboard and you will get at least a B: 90% of the quizzes are on the tests, so you're basically memorizing the questions and answers from the quizzes -Do Not Buy The Textbook!
She's a great teacher; very passionate about what she teaches. Always keeps it interesting and funny. Love her!
I took her oceanography class over intersession and although it was a lot of information in a short time, I learned a lot. If you bring the book to class and highlight what she talks about in her lectures, and take her online quizzes, her tests will be a piece of cake.
4 tests, and like 100 pts of clicker. Tests are not hard. I studied the night before test for all of them even the final and still achieved more than 90%. Sounds easy, my recommendation is to study follow the STUDY GUIDE she posts on blackboard and do the QUIZZES, and the book will help (it can be old version).
Her class is not that easy. There were over 100 people in the class room and about 4 or 5 got A's. I would not recommend to take her for easy A, unless you're really interested in the course of Marine Science.
love her
She is a cool teacher and makes class not as boring as most lectures. She lectures every class all class and gives a 2-5 question quiz pretty much every class too. She gives a total of 5 tests a semester including the final. She takes the top 4 scores out of the five. Study the online quizzes and the online study guide and you'll pass.
Gives study guides, and her exams question are all from her study guides and online quizzes so her class is extremely easy to pass.
The teacher was great
Karen is a really great professor, if you're looking to do most of the work on your own. Lectures weren't as clear as I had hoped and she got off topic very easily. Turned to my book and quizlet to pass. Textbook isn't needed but it makes up for what she can't give.
Really interesting and fun lecture, Professors great and likes to crack jokes (mostly cheesy ones) and tell stories. Depending on the semester, she'll have extra credit opportunities . Tests are really easy if you use her study guides and online practice quizzes. She usually gives out small 5 question quizzes after each chapter in her lectures.
Not exactly an easy A. There's a lot of material so don't wait until the night before to study. As long as you do the study guides and practice quizzes, you should get at least a B. DON'T TAKE IF YOU'RE LAZY. You do have to put in work! She makes lectures fun with her kiddy jokes but I did catch myself and others falling asleep every now and then.
5 tests(drops lowest one), lots of pop quizzes(you can discuss with your classmates or someone will yell out the answer). I did not study for two tests(F&D) but I passed with a B- by studying and doing well for the other tests & final. Lectures are online if you miss a class. Not saying it's an easy class, but it's not hard either. I recommend.
A lot of reading. She does go over a lot from the book during her lecture, but you will definitely need a book for this class. Her powerpoint online doesn't make sense unless you come to class and listen to her lecture. Quiz every chapter, randomly as well, so be prepared. She drops your lowest test, 4 out of 5. Her test is tricky btw.
Karen Baker makes class fun and I wanted to go to class because she makes everything interesting. Definitely recommend her because she is funny and very smart. Knows what she is talking about and offers LOTS of points to bring your grade up. go to class because she holds quizzes once a week which are open notes, book, and even person.
Loved having Baker as my Oceanography Teacher, must attend lecture, you never know when there is a quiz so GO TO CLASS. Quizzes are open EVERYTHING, and are easy points. She basically gives you the test in her study guides. Do all her study guides and quizzes on black board and you will have seen 80% of the questions on the test if not more.
Karen is amazing. She is so smart and her lectures are hilarious. The class is super easy too. She basically gives you the test on the study guide and the quizzes are easy points (open everything). There is no homework and it is the best science class I have ever taken. She is a truly great professor and I hate science and I am saying that.
Had a ton of field trips that was fun and educational. Easy going teacher and is comfortable to be around. Great personality and taught the material really well. Would recommend!
This is a good professor. I strongly recommend doing the online quizzes because they are a large portion of the exams for oceanography 100. Her coastal oceanography course is more challenging and most people fail the exams but she gives lots of easy quick assignments and extra credit to balance it out.
Amazing! I am not a science person and she made this class very easy for me. As long as you go to class, do the study guides, and take the online quizzes you will pass! I took her winter class and did very well! Love her teaching style!
No homework but definitely have to study for tests in order pass. Amazing and very inspirational teacher. Regular quizzes so try not to skip class so much. Reading the textbook is not mandatory but would help. Tests are a little difficult but not if you study for them.
the hardest GE class I ever took! Extra credit is something that you must put a lot of work and the points u get are not worth it, at least compared to the total points of the class. Quizzes in class are fast and harsh. I can't stand this class any more.
Great Professor. She is hilarious and gets the class involved. Her Marine Science class is very interesting and she definitely makes it worth it. THE TESTS ARE IDENTICAL TO THE STUDY GUIDES AND PRACTICE QUIZZES SHE GIVES YOU, MOST OF ANSWERS ARE ON QUIZLET. Its a great and fun class, which is an easy A.
She does not respond to emails. Pretty unorganized. She is funny and witty but it's kind of a chore taking her class. The labs are hands on and you will need to buy the book. 4 field trips. Somewhat of a fun class but it drags and isn't always clear. I'm a full time student and this lab is the most high maintenance class I have.
I hated this class more than my math class. This is the worst GE class I've taken. Be prepared to buy a thousand scantrons because you have a quiz every day and all the extra credit she offers cost money. Super lame in my opinion and I was really looking forward to learning more about the ocean. Also if you send an email, don't expect a response.
I don't know why she has so many negative reviews. :( The quizzes on class is the same as the quizzes on Blackboard, test is all on study guide. Many extra credits. There is also a study group. I even don't use my textbook. Just do the quizzes, study the study guide, you will get an A like me. Hehe. She's super nice and funny. TAKE HER!
Favorite Professor at OCC. I looked forward to going to her class every day. She is absolutely hilarious. Even if you don't like science, you will love her humor. She keeps the class engaged and entertained, I ended up loving Oceanography.
She's an ok professor. I took it as a GE course and expected it to be less work than the classes required for my major. It's a lot of work to get an A. There's no hw but you have to remember the smallest details in her lectures. There's some extra credit to maybe bump you up 2-3% of total grade. Don't take if for GE or expect an easy A.
Not a great instructor, covers material and sometimes seems like she doesn't know what she is talking about found material in books and college websites that contradicts what she says, although the class is easy to some degree its almost taught at a high school level. Does a horrible job of returning emails don't wait for help from her.
I recommend all of you to take this class!! This class is easy A, open everything for in-class quizzes. There are 4 tests, and all these tests are based on the online practice quizzes and study guides. She do offer extra credits! GOOD LUCK!
Prof. Baker is really passionate about the ocean and that comes across in her lectures and lab. Listening to her speak almost feels like Im just listening to one long informative story. Not boring at all! She gives quizzes pretty much every class but you can use your notes. Read the study guide and you should be ok. Id def take her again!
Karen is the best! There isnt any hw, you just have to prepare for quizzes and exams (4). Exams are straightforward and contain everything on the study guides. She is funny, makes lecture interesting, and really loves her job. If you have to take a GED science you should take Karen. This class relieves the scary stereotype of science classes!
Professor Baker is great. Took her Oceanography lecture course during the intercession. Show up, complete the online quizzes on Canvas, and you will do great. Real chill teacher.
Karen is one of my favorite professors at OCC! I took her for lecture and lab, and she is a great teacher. The lectures are very interesting and she clearly is very passionate about marine science. There are 4 exams, use the study guides. Lab is really fun, a couple field trips made it even better. I would take her again!!
Amazing professor she truly cares about her students. She so easy to talk to. Her grading system is so clear easy A but you have to do the work. Opportunity for extra credit.
Karen is amazing! Take her please! Her lectures are really interesting and she's an easy person to talk to. Very funny. She'll talk about her own experiences and add in any recent issues that happened. Slides are great to look at (with videos too). Study guides are all you need. Final project is a presentation about a topic of your choice.
Amazing Teacher. Very willing to help students and will really push you a lot to become a better student and get involved with marine science. Very glad I had her!
Karen has become my mentor over the last couple of years. She is phenomenal and amazing. If you put in the work into her classes, you will do well. Very funny, witty and a joy to be around. She will challenge you to do your best!
Class is based on the exams but she has tons of tools to help you score high. She provides quizzes online and tons of study guides for every chapter. She gives a quiz after every lecture but they're only worth 2 points and they're open book. Wonderful teacher that respects you and will help you in need. She's very genuine about marine science!
Added on additional work (not on syllabus) study guides did not match up with exams taken
Too much word for a General Ed class. Multiple vocab quizzes with 20 questions. One for every chapter 2 points each. Her test are 75 questions and there each question is 2 points. The class is based on tests basically. An insane amount of work & boring class. DO NOT TAKE unless you are prepared for the workload.
Course was demanding already, Karen Baker made it worse. The first half of the course was taken in class and w/ three exams total. We are undergoing the COVID-19 situation and she's now added an extra exam and more homework. The class grade is based on the exams. About 17 Vcb exams, 20ish ques @2 points. 1 exam (150pts)-75 que. last 3, 100 pns 50 ?
I wish I read the review before taking this class. Do not dream about getting an A. A lot of work for GE class and nothing about quiz and test that you can find on google. Stay safe and do not put yourself in the trouble by taking this class
I gotta say the way she is holding this class is way higher than the ED course and it is almost a Master's degree course level, You need to spend 20 hrs in a week at least for getting A from this class! plus she easily deducts a point from you!
Don't listen to the reviews before 2020, she changed her style. So, trust me, avoid this class!!!
I don't know where to begin. The class is based solely off of exams and quizzes, and she will often put questions on the exams that are super-specific and irrelevant to a general/intro to biology course.
Not deserving of a grade of 1.0, but otherwise a very difficult instructor. The course I had just taken of hers consisted entirely of recycled lectures from several months prior and as a class is based on 2-attempt homework "quizzes", secure-browser exams, and subjectively graded writing assignments.
She's a great teacher who loves her work.
Took Karen Bakers online (no class meeting) courses for oceanography. The class was fast paced and you absolutely need to watch the lectures to do well on the quizzes. There is not an excessive amount of work; just enough to ensure you understand the material. The lectures are never long (under an hour) and she shows a lot of enthusiasm.
An amazing professor who was really passionate about her subject. The textbook is recommended but as long as you take good notes in class, her lectures give you all the content you need to know.
Im an art major who took this to fulfill my biological science requirement and it ended up being one of my favorite classes at OCC. Some reading and a LOT of note taking are necessary. Prof. Bakers love of marine science is contagious. Even the module about plankton was somehow fascinating, and I now also know all about evil micro and nanoplastics.
she is such a sweet teacher, her work & quizzes are the worst. she purposely rewords things and switches definitions to make you work for it and make it extra tough because of that. kind of annoying, ive never seen a professor go through that much trouble to TRY TO TRICK YOU. but overall shes nice and has good lectures, but this class is a headache
Great lecturer. Make sure to read the textbook, or at the very least pay attention to the lecture.
One good thing about her is that theres no final or midterm, but theres vocab quiz and concept test for each chapter. Her concept test ARE DIFFICULT. She makes it a lot harder than what she lectures. I only listen to her lectures so I never bought her book. Even though I did online I barely pass with a B. If u like a challenge this is the class:)
She does a great job at giving you all the tools to succeed. She gives you a study guide and practice test questions and posts the lecture slides on canvas. The class is graded on 4 tests which are similar to the practice test and overall it was an easy science class even if you're not a science person would definitely recommend her. 9.5/10
I took Karen for Oceanography (lecture and lab) and Marine Mammals, she is one of my favorite teachers at this campus. Along with great lectures she also talked a little about some other marine science classes that students might be interested in. Even in a 70+ person lecture hall she did a great job of engaging the class.
Took this course online and it was definitely a class worth taking. Her criteria is straight to the point and her lectures and practice quizzes give you everything you need to pass. I would recommend purchasing the textbook, it makes the concept checks and vocab quizzes easier. Overall, enthusiastic teacher and very passionate. Fun class!
Professor Baker knows her stuff having first-hand experience studying our amazing oceans. She's caring and answers every email, as well as giving multiple extra credit assignments. It is extremely easy to get an A in her classes as long as you show up yourself. She's also super funny and overall a wonderful lady.
Karen Baker was one of my favorite professors I had at OCC. I'm not a marine science major but I took her Oceanography class and loved it so much. She made it so interesting and I genuinely loved going to her class. As long as you show up and use the resources she gives you for the exam, it's a pretty easy class to pass.
I'm a bit conflicted about Karen Baker. On one hand, she gives us so much to work with and it helps out a lot. But on the other, she doesn't really engage everybody with her teaching. I honestly would recommend you pick a different professor or class to fulfill science requirements. If you have to, just be aware of the kind of class you are in for.
Mrs.Baker is a really passionate teacher who loves her job and that was very obvious when taking her class. there's no homework ever so be prepared to take lots of good notes during her lectures, and really take time with your cheat sheet for each test (8x10 paper filled with any info you want) and you will pass. lecture answers are test answers.
Easy, digestible lectures, with supplementing reading material from the textbook. Canvas quizzes were straightforward and open note, so as long as you took good lecture notes a high score was easily achievable. Open to communication outside of class, very approachable. Would take classes with her again.
karen baker was one of the best teachers i've taken. she is very nice and her class is pretty easy IF you put in the work. The work isn't too difficult but as long as you put in the time to take notes and come to class then you will get a good grade. the tests are very straightforward as well. no trick questions I 100% recommend taking karen baker.
Karen Baker is by far my favorite teacher I've had while at OCC. Her quizzes are easy and she provides lots of opportunities for extra credit. She is hilarious and doesn't give off intimidating teacher vibes. She answers emails quickly and is always there to help. Wish I could take all my classes with her. I would 10000% recommend taking her lab.
Professor Baker's lectures are engaging and she provides great resources like practice quizzes to help you succeed. While the tests can be tricky, using unstuckstudy alongside the textbook and class notes makes preparation a breeze. Overall, a rewarding class.
She is very kind and funny. No hw, 4 exams, and kahoot participation. Do STUDY GUIDE AND PRACTICE QUIZ. Easy to pass.
One of the best professors I've had, she makes the lectures super interesting and super amusing, would take her lecture again every time.
Grade is determined by 4 unit tests but you get a cheat sheet so as long as you put effort into studying you're fine. Most all test questions are online on the optional Study Guide modules. Super amazing lectures and overall great vibe
Easy especially for an online class. Assignements are interesting! I only took the lecture not the lab but I enjoyed the content.
She helped me go from an "F" to a "B" by reaching out when I was going through a difficult time. I owe her a lot!
Just okay to me. She's passionate and the class managed to be fairly easy and somewhat interesting, but also pretty much the whole grade was quizzes/mini tests which while not difficult, I found super tedious. Also, the discussions were really, really annoying, but everything else wasn't too bad. Not bad, not great, she is very nice though.
For an async online 8 week cource it wasn't that bad. Her lectures are long depending on the chapter but you get use to it. Just have your notes and book/anything from the class open for the concept checks. This class is dependent on concept checks versus 4 exams, but she drops 2 vocab quizzes and one concept quiz. Overall good experience.
I can only speak for MRSC100 Online Course during Winter Break 4 Week Course. Super easy, just daily assignment quizzes that you can just look up online, absolute lightwork. The only sort of hard thing was there was a couple discussion posts that she def grades a little harder that were tedious but it is definitely doable.Class is Passable.10/10
Baker was great, really cared about her students and the material. Not necessarily an easy course, but you have every tool necessary to succeed.
Karen is amazing, a fair grader, and cares about her students. her lectures are always fun. Lecture hall is something to look forward to when shes your professor. Just take lots of notes, study and you'll pass. The info she teaches is valuable and useful. Shes always open to discussion or even just conversation after class when theres time.
Great professor for oceanography, graded mainly by 4 tests but also participation during class kahoots. Sometimes she does the kahoots right at the start so be sure to be on time otherwise you get no credit.
took her oceanography lecture. lectures were clear and easy. majority of the material (~90%) on the exams is provided through practice quizzes and study guides. you are allowed one front and back cheat sheet on each exam which is extremely clutch. if you show up to class every day and participate in every kahoot you will get extra credit.
