She was a great teacher very clear on what she wanted you to know was good at explaining the information and giving you another view of it to clarify even further. Attendance is nessicary. Is willing to help you and answer any questions.
If you don't test well this is not a class for you. She only gave out two worksheets the whole semester. The rest of the grade was on quizzes and tests.
I almost failed this class when I had lost it for a while after a death in my family. But I went to her and she worked with me and gave me extra credit assignments to bring me back up to passing. She is a very nice lady, and very knowledgeable in her field. The tests were hard. Definitely a college level class.
Great teacher. Very Knowledgeable in the field. Willing to help you understand. Entire grade based on quizzes and tests which are based on the notes given in lecture following the study guides.
She is very smart and truly is passionate and knowledgable about what she is teaching. The grade in the class is mostly based on tests and quizzes, we only had one worksheet all year. She gives study guides which are extremely helpful and is willing to spend extra time with students if necessary. Hard class though- do not recommend for freshman
It's not easy, but you'll learn a lot.
Great teacher! My favorite so far. She is very clear in her lectures and gives out very helpful study guides. Must be a strong reader to do well on her tests. Tests and quizzes represent almost entire grade. Very willing to help during office hours. Best professor for Bio 1610:)
Professor Bauer is a fantastic teacher! She's really tough when it comes to tests and assignments, but she makes sure that students understand the material
Professor Bauer is awesome! Her tests are difficult. Going to class is not mandatory but very beneficial for your tests. She uses specific examples when explaining concepts and is very enthusiastic about Biology. I would definitely recommend her!
Great Teacher! She is very nice and very helpful. Tests are hard but she explains everything and writes all her notes on the board. If you take notes everyday and study them before tests you should do fine. The Exams are usually harder than the quizzes.
Bauer is a great professor. Her lectures are really clear and she has slides for all notes taken in class. If you don't understand something, she'll take the time to explain it to you. The tests are pretty easy and you really don't even need to use to textbook, it's all in the lecture notes. There is RARELY homework.
great teacher, make sure you write down every note, word for word and use that to study for quizes and exams!
Dr. Bauer is an excellent teacher - reviews everything that will be on the test in class. Offers extra credit opportunities on the tests as well. She expects you to do your reading, but again, she reviews everything. She's particular on the medical terminology, but hey, spelling and pronunciation ARE important! Definitely a great professor.
She's a great teacher and really knows her stuff but her test are the hardest test I've ever had to take! Studied my brains out and still never scored higher than a "C" on any of them. Quizzes were a little easier but she still words the questions in a way that's hard to understand.
Professor Bauer is an amazing woman. She is so passionate about biology and understands it to a T. She gives you a very detailed study guide and incorporates extra credit into ALL of her tests and quizzes. She is very helpful when you have questions and I never had to open my textbook once. Just study the lecture notes and you'll do great!
Dr. Bauer is AMAZING! She knows the ins and outs about biology and adapts her knowledge to teach the information so the students understand. She gives very detailed outlines for the test and goes over everything you will need to know on the test. Very understandable and patient when it comes to her teaching.
These reviews are pretty accurate. Test are quite difficult. So far I'm a junior and they are the only tests that I could not ace after studying and attending most lectures. She keeps the class fun and is a good teacher overall
Dr. Bauer is an amazing teacher. I could not pass her tests higher than a C and her whole class is based on your test scores. So if you aren't a test taker i would not recommend her.
She in an amazing teacher, but the tests and quizzes were extremely difficult. Entire grade is based on tests, so if you aren't a test taker, reconsider. But she's very good and what she does and does all she can to accommodate students.
Dr. Bauer is amazing! She has clear-cut lectures that are easy to follow. Her tests were definitely hard but as long as you studied your notes you were good! She helped me a ton throughout the semester and allowed me to reschedule a test that was on the last day of the classes because I got tonsillitis. I recommend her for any science class!
Bauer is the best. I took her for 1610 and 1620 and I received an A in both. She doesn't assign much homework (if any) but she expects you to know your stuff on the test. The cool thing is that she builds extra credit straight into all of her tests and quizzes. I would recommend taking these classes from her for sure.
Take bio from this professor if you're going to be a medical student or if you're interested in the subject. If you want an easy A - better choose other professor.
Focuses on the high yield material. Great for students taking the MCAT. She makes the students know the material thoroughly. I wish I could take every class from her. She boils down the book into what is most important, and focuses on that. Incredible teacher.
I loved taking Dr. Bauers Medical Terminolgy course. There was no homework whatsoever assigned, and she always gave you a heads up of test content. Extra-credit was always built into the tests and she would usually give hints regarding these during her lecture. Don't skip class!
She is a wonderful person... As for a teacher, not so much. She gives notes and study guides out, but then the tests are completely different? Like where did all this come from? Avoid if possible. If this is your only class then go for it but avoid avoid avoid
If you want an "easy A", then DON'T TAKE HER! She is the right person to take if you're a bio major, you want a great understanding of biology, or if you're seriously considering taking the DAT or MCAT. She knows her stuff! Her quizzes are easy, but her tests are challenging. I usually study about an hour each night and 3 or 4 leading up to a test.
I loved her. Of course her class was difficult but if you put in the work and study, you will have no problem passing her class. She is such a nice person and so willing to help you! She makes things interesting and makes up little stories to help you remember the content! plus extra credit is built into all her test's! She is also hilarious!
Professor Bauer is amazing! She gives out study guides for the exams and has one open book exam. The class material is tough so you have to study but she is easily the best biology teacher at Dixie.
Gives you notes of the chapter outlines in class. Most of the lecture is the outline on the board. Majority of the class struggled. Study every night. Attendance isn't mandatory but if you want to pass I suggest not skipping. Attended all and record her class. She is nice but talks about herself a lot. Definitely has an ego. No pop quizzes.
She is a great person who cares about students! Don't bother buying the textbook. You don't need it! Your grade is entirely based on tests (5 unit tests + 1 open book + 1 comprehensive final). She gives you a study guide at the start of a unit. Whatever is on the study guide is on the test and she does a GREAT job of teaching it understandably
Bauer is Great! She is hilarious and knows her stuff. I had her for 1610, 1620 and now Medical Terminology. Class was entertaining and educational, but difficult. A MUST study class. Grade based purely on tests but does have extra credit worked into them. Because of her classes I was more prepared for future Bio classes (genetics, evolution, etc).
One of my favorite teachers. I take any class she offers because she will teach you everything and she knows a lot about everything. I hope she decides to teach an upper division class so I can have her again.
Her tests are ridiculously hard. There were multiple tests where she deducted 10+ points off because I spelled a few words wrong. She also test on pronunciation, which is almost impossible to study. Her class is purely tests along with a final at the end. This class is only two credits but I put a lot of time into it, so it should be 4 credits.
I took Medical Terminology from her. I liked her teaching so much I will be taking Biology from her in the Spring. Her classes push you but if you study and listen to the hints she gives you in her lectures, you should be fine. Her lectures may come off boring to others, but I found them very educational and funny. She's a sweetheart!
Good luck. Expect at least 15% of each test to be things not in the notes that she hands out or in the book. Expect to study for more than ever if you want a decent grade. If I could re-do this class I would take any other professor. Few tests all worth a significant amount and you must know ALL of the material inside and out in order to even do ok
At first, I was frustrated by failing the tests but I realized it was the way I was studying. She will PUSH you but by the end, you will know so much it's incredible. I took Medical Terminology and Bio 1610 from her right now. I might pass with a C but hey she knows her stuff and has taught me what I need to know. :)
Class is TESTS ONLY, grades on pronunciation of words, too much information covered making it hard to retain info. post test, not willing to help when I came to her with questions, lectures ran short on time. I feel like I was set up to fail her class. Studied 15+ hours for tests every other week. Class is not worth 2 credits, should at least 3.
I honestly couldn't pass any of her tests with a decent grade. I have A's in all my classes for the past year, but I have a C in her class. She's a good teacher and I learn a lot but her tests are really hard and a bit unfair in my opinion. She also has an ego that I couldn't handle when she talked about herself. Good Luck!
Bauer is one of the best teachers I have ever had! She is always willing to help. Not an easy class but not a super hard one either as long as you put in the time to study. Grades are based on tests and quizzes only- but they all offer quite a bit of extra credit.
I know you're probably reading and thinking there are some mixed reviews about Karen. But just don't.
Bauer is a great professor if you do a little research on your own time. You definitely don't need to read the whole book (that would be impossible), but with her study guides you need to look up the info in the book as well. She is very good at her lectures and she's also pretty funny.
Horrible professor. Wastes a lot of class time on random topics and gets behind. Tests are nothing like the information taught in lecture. Take any other professor. Do not take this class
Felt like I knew the material pretty well, came test day and the tests were nothing like the lecture notes. She words them so difficult, gives answers that are so close to the same thing to trick us. How does she expect us to pass her course when the average score for the final was a 59% ? I do not recommend her at all!!!
great teacher
Horrible teacher. I would not recommend. Bauer was very arrogant and would waste our class time saying mean things about her previous students and about other professors. She started by going very in depth for the first few chapters & then at the end of the semester she piled on as many chapters as she could. Her tests were hard.
If you aren't keen on going to class, you're going to have a hard time in this class. As long as you go to class and take notes, the tests will be a breeze. She lays out exactly what she wants you to know and tells stories to help you remember the material. She is a wonderful teacher!
This the toughest class I have ever taken. Tests are loaded with trick questions and worded in a way that is tough to understand. I spent a lot of time studying each week and only managed a B-. The average class grade on the final was 59%.,That speaks for itself.
She was the worst teacher I had ever had! About 10 of us failed from my class. I read the book front to back multiple times and studied the study guides for HOURS and could not for the life of me get a decent grade on any of the 10 tests we took. You read that right, 10! She also talked way to much about herself the whole time. Dont waste your time
She is a good teacher overall, very knowledgeable and entertaining during class. The tests are just impossible and have nothing to do with the quizzes she gives. I liked her, but definitely would suggest taking someone else if you can.
Shes a great teacher and I have learned a lot from taking the class, but her tests are really hard. They are filled with trick questions. She does give 10 points of extra credit on tests and even then mostly everybody fails. I would take her class again if her test werent so hard
Professor Bauer did a great job at teaching this course. She genuinely cared about her students. You will have one quiz per unit and one test as well. I got away without reading in the textbook and did just fine. Would recommend reading through your lecture notes each night to see the best results on tests and quizzes.
To summarize Bauer, she teaches you in class about the basics yet tests you on the advanced. Her tests are not only full of trick questions but also contain questions that you won't find on either her study guide or the textbook! The class average on all tests were about 60%, which sucks cause your whole grade is based on quizzes and tests.
All she does in class is read the notes she has posted online. She gives a quiz for every chapter and the study guide for the quizzes is useful. However, the test are HARD. You have to read the textbook word for word and memorize the notes to barely pass. She asks a lot of logical reasoning questions but doesn't teach the logic behind them!
Her lectures were good and interesting, but her tests were impossible. Most of the time I felt like she was testing my test taking skills instead of my biology knowledge. You have to read the text book front to back if you want a decent grade on any of the quizzes and tests, which are the only things that go on your grade. Skip lecture Fail.
This class was difficult for me because the tests were nothing like the quizzes or what we learned, she was knowledgeable but her lectures were hard to listen to and stay focused, and when I went to talk to her about things she didn't follow through with her word. She also didn't drop my lowest exam like she said she would.
Bauer seems like a nice lady overall but is a horrible professor. Lectures consist of her just reading notes she posted online. Quizzes help in terms of reviewing and keeping up with the reading, but tests are impossible. You could read all her notes, study the textbook, and still get a C on the test. I don't even know how.
A great teacher, have her in the morning and she is always cracking jokes and we have a great time! All you need to do is attend the class and take good notes
I love professor bauer. Ive taken her multiple times and have loved every minute. She makes lectures fun with her side comments and jokes. She includes extra credit on each quiz and exam which is super helpful for getting good grades and she is always willing to help you out if you dont understand something. Highly recommend!
Professor Bauer is a nice, caring person. However, her tests and quizzes are brutal. The studying they require is more about memorizing every last detail instead of showing that you understand the big picture. Quizlet/EasyNoteCards have test banks from the textbook, and about 30-50% of test questions match them. Lectures do not help for tests.
Bauer is very knowledgeable and has been in the field a long time, so she's a good person to answer questions you have. The biggest problem was how tough her exams and quizzes were. She had extra credit built into her exams, but without that, I would've done terribly. If you don't study a lot, don't take her class.
Teaches to fill in a study guide, but the test is very specific.
The lectures themselves were always interesting, but it was SO hard to keep up with all the studying. If you study, you'll pass the tests, but you need to study every last detail because the tests are pretty difficult. She is really kind and funny, but her class is really hard.
You pretty much have to teach everything yourself. This semester all she did was tell stories about what we were talking about without really explaining it. With her being a biology professor I wouldve hoped for more sympathy during a pandemic or just some respect. At first she was great, I just think other students took advantage of the system.
Absolutely wonderful professor. Here's how I got an A-: Come to each class in person. Pay attention to and exclusively write notes on what she says and shows in class as she provides notes on her own material. Use Quizlet well. transfer study guide questions over, find answers in provided notes. Add flashcards from what you talked about in class.
Rarely any homework, you basically have to teach yourself, gives study guides but you have to know EVERYTHING in depth.
I took 1610 & 1620 from her in the same semester and was able to pull of B's in both. She is very smart and definitely knows her stuff, but she does go off on tangents that takes up crucial lecture time. Her tests were a bit unfair in my opinion as they didn't properly reflect her study guides and she didn't make it clear what you should know.
You are better off teaching yourself than going to lecture. Ive gone to lecture everyday for some exams and decided to skip for one exam and I got a higher grade doing so myself. Easily off topic and doesn't present material well at all. Study guides for this class is as helpful as using a geometry textbook for the test. Is not at all helpful.
Dr Bauer knows her stuff. She is highly educated and an experienced professor. However, her policies and attitudes towards grades indicate to me that her priorities are heavier toward giving tests JUST to test you, and not toward providing opportunities for deep learning and retention. If youve been obviously trying but you fail a test, too bad.
Old school professor, old school teaching style and class structure. Meaning very experienced in the things that work and very stuck on the things that are proven *not to work*. She cares more that you do homework or tests her way, then that you actually learn and ***retain*** things. So if you don't mind busy homework and hard tests just for fun
Okay! Dr. Bauer does give you a study guide but her tests go above and beyond them. So she does not test completely on what she teaches. She is brutal when it comes to any slack in her class. I never missed a day, had the study guide memorized, and a few of her tests were just ridiculous. If you want an A then try and get another Professor.
Prof. Bauer is a rough professor. She will often test on minute details from the textbook (not always gone over in class) and gets very sidetracked during lectures. Many times in class she read straight from the textbook or Wikipedia when she ran out of slides on her PowerPoint. She did not usually have answers to questions in class.
You pretty much have to teach everything to yourself, you'll probably still not do very good on tests because she tests on things that we didn't even really go over. Probably my least favorite professor for that reason, she doesn't teach to help us learn. She is very smart but doesn't care about us or if we're learning/: Wouldn't recommend.
Do not take bio 1620 from her. She is always going on about how its higher level so its harder but she makes it ridiculous. Her quizzes are harder than her tests. I would spend hours upon hours studying and still only pulled a B out of the class.
The worst professor I have ever had in my three years at Utah Tech. Does not teach anything on the tests or quizzes. Most people failed the tests, and quizzes go above and beyond on about things never talked about. The average test grades were 50-60% and half the class stops coming after the first two tests because there is no point. she sucks.
She has to be the worst professor I have had in years. No one does well on any exam let alone the quizzes. It is true what every review says about 1620. I busted my butt off to do well in this class and can only pull a C out of it, while I have been a straight A student. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS!
I honestly don't know what I am doing wrong in her class. I've read the textbook, made flashcards of her study guides which took hours to make, and went to study sessions 3-4 times a WEEK to pull out a C or lower on everything. However, she gives out extra credit, which doesn't help much, and doesn't do bell curves. This class is not worth it.
She is disorganized. She gives a study guide and then tests on information that is irrelevant to it. She gives notes, but they are outdated and do not completely align with the text book. I wish I had something positive to say about this class but I really do not. Do not take this class.
Im not going to lie. This is the worst teacher, I switched out of her class and actually understood everything and got an A. Her class was all tests and quizzes no homework nothing to help get ready for tests. Her tests have nothing that her lectures teach and everyone fails. You are lucky to get a 50 on her tests. Save yourself dont take her class
Lots and lots of studying for quizzes which make or break your grade, the only good thing was the one open book test but otherwise I probably would have failed
Professor Bauer is very intelligent but isn't the best teacher. She goes on rants sometimes about her own life and will make it clear that she is pro vaccination. Make sure you read the textbook before every exam because her exams can be very hard. Her study guides don't fully prepare you for the exams either and she gives very few assignments.
I had a sparkling GPA until I took this class, so when I say that this class is awful, BELIEVE ME. Bauer is a notoriously picky grader, her study guides do not match the tests, and she is not lenient at all. Her tests are needlessly hard and her "lectures" are just her reading her notes. Save yourself the grief, take anyone else.
This is a horrible class, she gives study guides that do not relate to the tests, I do not recommend this class.
This professor is so hard that there are no tutors for her class because no onehaspassedit Sheisnot lenient with anyoneandtalksaboutherself alot Her tests are nothing like her study guide It's almost like you have to be Karen Bauer to take her tests only answers to her questions come from her head not the textbook I can't explain all of it on here.
In school there are two kinds of students, the ones who actually want to learn, and those who are there for a grade. While Dr. Bauer's class was difficult in many aspects, it taught me that I was capable of becoming an academic and future physician. The key to an A+ is the study guides. I the high score in the class, because I truly knew them :-)
There is extra credit built into every test and quiz. So it is very possible to get over 100 in her class. Find a friend, teach each other the material and quiz each other from the study guide. Explain in depth what is asked on the study guide. Her tests have some random questions that you will get wrong because you are a new biology student.
If you are taking Biology DO NOT TAKE A CLASS FROM KAREN. She grades with an iron fist, and her tests do not match the study material. I had a sparkling GPA until I took this class, now i am having to retake it. I took the lab with Jennifer Ciaco and got an A, so I recommend taking her lecture instead. Save yourself the grief, go elsewhere for BIO.
This professor is unanimously hated by every class she has taught. Her exams do not match her study guides, and even though she offers "generous extra credit", said extra credit questions are near impossible. DO NOT TAKE unless you want a bad GPA.
Avoid at all costs.
Everything is rigged in her class. Extra credit is a lie and in reality it knocks your grade down. Most of her lectures are about her personal life and barely about Biology. Her notes are just a bunch of random stuff as well. She lies about what's on the test and what isn't on the test. Study guides won't help you at all, nor will the textbook.
From the bottom of my heart, if there is another professor available... TAKE THEM. I care about you, your GPA & mental wellbeing. Please learn from my mistake. I can't be more serious... The ONLY time you should enroll in her class is never. I promise it's more worth it to wait until a future semester than it is to think "how bad can it really be."
To this day (I'm a senior) Bauer was the hardest professor I've taken and I like learning. The class was so challenging and seemed more like she was trying to trick you on every test and get you with someone obscure fact. Rambles for WAY to long during lecture, off topic, course was not on track and had to take three tests the last week. YES THREE
Take any other professor if possible. Worst professor ever. Gives you study guides that doesn't help with studying for tests,
Do not take this class! No matter how hard I studied I could not get higher than a 70 on her tests (I am a 90-100 test average). Her tests set you up to fail. The study guides provide no help and do not prepare you at all for the test. If you can, take another teacher! She is a nice person, but this class felt impossible.
Dr. Bauer has been teaching for 25 years. She cannot be persuaded, bought, or bullied. She assigned no homework and made all the lecture notes accessible from day one along with the textbook. Do the work, show up, and be kind and you won't have any problems. Easily one of the best and easiest classes I've had all semester.
Professor Bauer is an amazing professor, you can tell she cares about her students and she tells a lot of personal stories that make the class enjoyable. Be prepared to study if you take this class because there are only tests and quizzes and maybe one assignment the whole semester when I took the class. Make sure to go to class everyday as well.
I have such a love-hate relationship. Go to class, listen to her lecture, and then halfway through there's a quiz, and then at the end of the unit there's an exam. The first time I took a quiz, I did alright, and then the exam. I was so confused about what on earth was on it. If you have her, all I say is be ready and study, study, study.
She talks a lot about her farm and husband, rarely relevantly. It is almost all exams that are just difficult, you do learn biology but if you care about your GPA just don't take her. You can get a good grade if you study a lot (2-7 hours a week) or already know the stuff. Class is boring, tests are hard, I rec you stay away.
Everything in the lecture is not on her tests. She says she doesn't care about any of her students let alone whether or not we succeeded in her class. I got an average grade for her course. Studying seemed futile. Would never take again. Absolutely horrid of a Professor.
This class can only be described as horrid. There are tests then quizzes and more tests. She doesn't assign assignments so the tests and quizzes are the only things on your grade. Her lectures do not go over all the info on the exams. Just don't take for your own sanity.
Professor Bauer's class is notoriously challenging. While the material is interesting, her tests are extremely difficult and don't align well with the study materials. However, Unstuck ai proved to be a helpful resource for me to prepare efficiently.
I worked professionally with this professor, but she's inflexible and unwilling to accommodate students, especially those with disabilities. She rigidly enforces ‘academic integrity' without support outside class. Her outdated materials and misaligned topics make the class difficult. Even proactive students should prepare for the worst. Steer clear
She only grades based on quizzes and tests. There is built-in extra credit but it does not add much of a buffer. She pulls test questions from the textbook test bank so you MUST read the textbook. She gives study guides that are not very helpful and will mention something ONCE buried within yap sessions of her lectures and put it on the exam.
This class was extremely draining and difficult. Professor Bauer shows no interest in working with students or accommodating. On the first couple of quizzes and tests, half of the class failed and she took no responsibility. The study guides do not cover what is on the tests as she often throws in questions with unrelated topics. Do not take!
She takes pride in students not doing well and is pretty mean to our Korean student. She doesn't actually teach and just reads it off a slide show so prepare to just teach yourself
Her lectures are incredibly boring. She reads off her slides the entire time. There are many tests. She does give a study guide that provides the majority of what you will see on the test.
My 2nd sem w/ Prof Bauer and I hope my last. You'd think the built in extracredit points on exams/quizzes would be helpful, but class averages are consistently in the 60s. She doesn't care if you succeed just reads the lecture notes, googles for pictures, videos, and definitions in class. Knows her stuff but doesn't care to make sure you do, too.
“Karen” is the most atrocious professor ever. Her ego is her biggest downfall. She likes to see her students fail. She likes to put a lot of trick questions on the quizzes and tests, along with questions that are not covered in the textbook, lectures, and study guides, and expects you to know them. I was solid 4.0 student, until now. Do not take.
I was on my final semester, a solid 4.0 student. I was only taking 2 classes, an art class and this. After my first quiz, I needed to triple the amount of study time that I normally take. I was studying 6-8 hours a day. I could not for the life of me, get a score over 75 on the exams. Her questions are so insignificant to biology. Goodbye 4.0.
Gave 4 exams in two weeks including final
