Great Teacher, really interesting, and fun!
she is pretty reasonable except she gives a lot of work, she's quite the hard marker, extremely picky and expects a lot. she's a passionate teacher so you have to be just as determined in order to receive anything more than an average mark...
She is a very picky marker. Basically if she has no interest in what you wrote, you're gonna get a bad mark! She doesn't explain what she's looking for, but she's interesting, I'll give her that.
I've taken 3 courses w/ Karen and loved them all. A brillant mind, she's always willing and ethusiastic. She's a very fair marker, expecting you to get out what you put into the course. Also, she's interested in cool subjects like Gothic lit + lifestyle, + creepy myths, stories + folklore (vampires etc.) Her coures are NOT for the faint hearted!

She's a really nice person, and I found her grading kind too. Yeah, I like her.
I had her for 1130 and loved her! Great teacher...very lively and helpful if approached.
her teaching quality is very low. she doesn't teach what she is supposed to (ie. elements of fiction). she picks favourites, and if you are not, you will have a tough time thruout the semester. she must stop being condescending; otherwise, she will lose more students than now.
She was absolutely fantastic. She's very interested in what she teaches and makes it interesting for the class. Very focused on the success of her students. She was wonderful, and I would definitely recommend her to anyone. Desperately wanted to take her 1130 class.
Karen is a very clear professor, giving *lots* of feedback on each essay. Writing against her interests did *not* negatively impact my mark. Her 'favourites' are people who participate in class, and she does (indeed) focus on students who are interested in working. These are all marks in her favour, I consider her to be one of the better teachers.
HerteachingstyleisAWESOME. If Exp. Lit w/ Karen Budra is an option: TAKE IT! I learned a lot about Gothic Lit & I enjoyed coming to class. I enjoyed reading the novels & I enjoyed her lectures. Make sure to put effort into ur writing and listen to what she says (incorporate what you learn into the discussions, your own writing) & participate!
Karen is hip and cutting edge- She doesn't censor anything and makes lectures very interesting. Her class is fun, easy and relevant- I kept thinking I was missing something because it was so straightforward, but that's just how she teaches. I definitely recommend her to anyone.
She is a razor sharp teacher. Very clear about what are the most important elements about each novel, or poem. Interesting and relevant material too. And if you speak up in class, and say something "off the mark" she won't shoot you down - but try to just ease into the direction she wants you to learn. Fabulous!!
Karen has a good understanding of what english is all about but her marking is horrible. She feels ENGL 1127 is to introduce students to college and hope they drop out. Almost half her class withdrew from the course after the first exam. She is one of those "what comes around...goes around" teachers. I do not recommend her at all.
I took both 1127 and 1129 with Karen and although her classes were reasonable, her essay topics were boring and exam marking was hard. She slowly chips away at your GPA throughout the semester.
Easy to understand. Hard to get a good mark. Average mark in our section was a 'C'.
ehh she okay. kinda hard but not much hw though. 1 major paper , rest of marks come from in class essays and reader responses to the short stories
Not very clear about expectations/assignments. Expects you to read her mind. Very biased marker.
She is super knowledgeable and teaches in such a way that you really want to learn and inderstand what she is teaching you. She is not to clear on what she wants you to do for assignments, but if you just ask her after class to clarify then she will. She is an overall excellent teacher and I would defintely reccomend her! I learned a lot!
Really great & interesting instructor! Highly recommended!
Hard to please. We're there everyday for an hour/4days and about half way through the semester, she takes her Thursdays to teach students individually. It's ridiculous that I paid for a whole semester and didn't learn much from her. My writing didn't improve the way I wanted. HARD MARKER. She's a nice person, but not a great teacher.

Very competent teacher. She will seem like a strict marker at first, but if you follow her criticism you will improve. She's a passionate, and compelling teacher.
Great prof, really passionate and clear about expectations.
If you're taking second year English courses, then Karen is (arguably) the best prof. Her classes can be challenging but it's excellent preparation for 3rd & 4th year courses in university. Tough marker, too. Not recommended for anyone looking to cruise through school.
Awesome teacher, she's not an easy marker and expects a lot from her students. The best eng. teacher I've ever had! I learned so much in her course!
Shes in the wrong career path. Completely high on herself, and acts like teaching is a burden on her life. don't believe me? check her facebook, where you'll find gems like this: "is forcing herself to walk down the hall, toward her classroom....." and "teaching sonnets to bored 18 yr olds"
If you don't want to teach to 'bored' 18 year olds, then find a new job, one where you will be surrounded by fellow intellectuals instead of 'people that didn't read the material. You are a teacher with a degree. We are LEARNING. You make it very hard to stay motivated when you publicly announce that you loathe your students. Get it together.
Average all around. Interesting material, not very clear on what she wants with regards to assignments/essays. She doesn't seem to be v. motivated to teach 1st yrs so if anything I'd recommend her for a 2nd yr course.
SHe is a hard marker. I got B- for eng 1127 and my essays were c+ material. I failed one of my essays and got a D for another. I went to se her about my essays and her comments were unhelpful. I dont recommend her.
Ridiculous middle aged woman always telling us how stuff rocked. We watched the entire Shakespeare in Love movie in class.
She seems unhappy with the intellectual level of her students and teaches down with many in class videos and early dismissal of classes. Changed class syllabus and due dates throughout the semester which makes it difficult to stay organized. Class notes and test material are not connected. Too many surprises for an organized student.
Karen has a sense of humor, which I can't say most profs do. Pay attention, be on time and you'll learn. Does tend to let classes out early, but who doesn't like that.
We spent the entire class going over the history of film, then the exams were all about analyzing the films. We would watch the film and then rather than discussing it in analytical detail, she asked us how we "liked" it. Who cares? Also, she didn't put any comments on the midterm. Very irritating. Although she is nice and enthusiastic, I'd avoid.
Shes a really hard marker. I got a B for 1127 took 1130 in the next sem. and withdrew on the last withdrawal date. I attended all classes and put 110% effort. Failed an essay for the 1st time in my life.Horrible Prof, If you can help it is advised that you don't take her class but of course its ur choice. You've been warned.
Karen is great, but she picks favorites. She bases this on if you talk. So open your mouth and you golden. This is my second class with her (1130 as well) and im taking her again next semester. I LOVE her. I get B's, and try semi-hard. As long as your are genuinely interested in the class convos and contributing, you'll be fine.
Changed my life.
Karen in intelligent and clearly possesses a plethora of knowledge; however the stoicism she exhibits towards most of her students makes her a horrible teacher. She can be very engaging in class discussions but discourages many from participating by frequently condescending or embarrassing students who she dislikes or disagrees with.
Entertaining lectures, let us out early every class, laid back attitude. Do not take her class if you dislike public speaking/presentations etc as there's several throughout the semester and lots of reading aloud. You MUST attend her class cuz she will notice and hold it against you.
she does not like students of different ethnicities. Do not take her at all!!!
I learned a lot about film history. I found Karen to be very interesting and enthusiastic, but she had her favourites (those who spoke up) and could be quite patronizing to others. Though I did learn a lot (about film), I don't find that my English skills improved at all. She was a hard marker. Plenty of group work and presentations!
I enjoyed Karen's class. But she is a hard marker. I never noticed preferential treatment or lack of. She was available when I needed her, helpful at all times, and allowed innovation in many writing assignments. But wow! It's hard to get an A with her.
Very hard prof unless you know your stuff inside and out. I do believe she picks favourites, but not to the extremes where she will fail you if your not her fav. In marking essays/midterms, she provides NO feedback, which is terrible! So basically you learn no English at all, although I leanred a bit about film. Interesting dresser also.
I would never take her agian! She's wasn't the worst teacher in the world, but I DEFINITELY do not like her teaching methods. She only gives C+'s. Not even joking, it's so rediculous. I mean I'm not the best English student in the world but when you try and try and feel like you're doing better and then STILL get a C+, something is weird.
Karen is a very nice person, however she picks favourites; if you don't speak in class, she'll probably give you a C+ or lower. Always bring your class materials, aka textbooks, as you'll be using it alot. Hm, what else.. I know that she is enthusiastic about her teaching and loves what she does, however I did not learn anything from her class.
She's very condescending when you come to her for help. I had her for ENG 2223 as well. Worst teacher ever. Please get out of this class while you can. Seems that you can never try hard enough and you still get a poor mark. For 2223 you have to stand up and give a lecture on a book that you choose from her list. Why is she a teacher?
If you're incapable of abstract thinking, don't sign up! Participate in the discussions and ask questions; Karen is extremely helpful and willing to spend time with students discussing relevant concepts. However, in-depth analysis of the content is expected. The results? Improved public speaking & writing skills; also, a broadened world perspective
If possible take english with Babiak or any other english teacher. She is terrible.
Karen is theatrical. At the beginning I hated her. I don't think she's an awful teacher, learned a lot about the history of film but I don't think my writing improved because of her.Sit near the front and participate. I think she picks favorites your grade will reflect your participation. I found it easy but most people don't. make yourself noticed
Don't take her if you want to learn writing skills instead of public speaking techniques. She picks favorites who talk excessively a lot in class. I don't think I've learn any practical comprehension skills from her. She grades hard. And ultimately, she smiles to her favorites and fakes smile to the rest.
One of my favourite professors - she's a hard marker, yes, but if you participate in class and provide meaningful, well thought-out analysis of the material, you'll do well. A very knowledgeable and insightful individual. The film class I took with her was extremely enjoyable.
I think Karen is an excellent instructor, she explains things in an entertaining manner using references from her experiences. She is an extremely well traveled woman. She is a tough marker, but if you improve *your own* writing through hard work your marks will reflect your effort. Karen tries to give her students the skills to improve themselves.
She is very passionate about what she teaches, but is a very hard marker. You will have to work for your marks. Her lectures were interesting. I learned a lot about film. Be wary of the poetry essay, as she marks it hard if your interpretation not what she expects.
She is quite dramatic overall. I found her a little "crazy" for my taste. My overall grade was A-, and I didn't find this stressful to attain. Didn't much care for her class, but it was a nice GPA boost. I believe her marking to be fair.
I really Like Karen. I didn't do well in her class but I enjoyed it regardless. I think she is a hard marker. I found her relaxing and straight forward. She is well- traveled and I enjoyed hearing about it. I am trying to take Eng 1130 with her next term.
Karen is amazing, her class is always engaging, fun, and informative. However she is a very hard marker. I enjoyed her class nonetheless, if you want a high mark in her class you must work extremely hard.
Her classes are very interesting and fun but she is an EXTREMELY hard marker. Would not recommend taking her if you need a high GPA to transfer. Also do NOT buy all the books she suggests. You only really need the Intro to literature. All the other books you use once and will waste your money buying.
Karen is a very interesting person. She's kind, knowledgeable, and funny. Her classes are thorough and informative, but she marks quite hard. I learned quite a bit from her and would recommend her classes if you truly wish to LEARN.
Karen is a great teacher. If you engage in conversation and put solid effort in, you can receive a high grade. However, if you are looking for an easy A, this is not the teacher for you. My classmates complained that she marks really hard, but she also offers office hours to help students so they can go get help.
Great and wonderful person very interesting and engaging but she marks ridiculously hard and unless your a terrific/fantastic writter and great at composing essays dont take this course cause she will rip your writting apart, its constructive criticism but class brought down my gpa alot! She has interesting stories and her presence is great
Karen is an excellent teacher. Show up, speak up, and spend time doing the assignments. You can get a high grade. She is approachable and wants her students to succeed. Karen is also interesting, animated, super quirky and unique so you'll never be bored. If you have a question, ask, and if you want to succeed, ask her about her dance classes!
I enjoyed Karen's class immensely. She conveys a number of complicated concepts with ease and clarity. She is perhaps not an "easy" teacher, but will provide helpful support upon request.
I am in her class, I am not expecting a high grade, but! That aside, I think she's great. She's engaging, stylish and clearly passionate about what she teaches. She has an elegant way of speaking that's kind of hypnotizing. She is intimidating, and her exams are challenging. Of course she likes students who speak up! Who wouldn't in her position?
Ms. Budra's class is relaxed and she always lets us off very early. However, if you are the one who is seeking improving your writing, I wouldn't recommend you to take her class. But if you are already good, you possibly will get a good grade without doing much work. By the way, except for the IL, the text books are not necessary.
So here's the thing. Karen's classes are certainly more difficult than your average English class, and it would be ill-advised to take her class if your LET score is 3 or less without taking 1121. Participate in-class, get help as soon as you need it, and show her you care. Otherwise stay away.
Ms Budra is very passionate about English and her teaching style is nicely animated and engaging. She marks tough but fair, I learned a lot from her class as well as enjoyed it very much. She keeps things fresh and interesting. And no one has rated this woman hot yet? Wow, because she is :)
Karen has an apparent interest and passion for the material she teaches. She has a very elagent way of speaking and picks unique books, movies and poetry. If you're taking a class for the quality of teaching and material enroll in English with Karen. If English is not your thing and you're looking to "just get through it" I wouldn't recommend her.
How has no one rated her hot yet? She is stunning. She is hard marker but so passionate about what she teaches. I loved her. I learned so much about film. I'm not sure I'll ever watch one the same way. I wish I could take more courses with her.
very engaging and enthusiastic. knows her stuff and keeps things fun. Very hard marker and not great one on one support. vague instructions were frustrating. kept telling me not to worry about my grades because I was doing better than average (C-). only buy the Into to Lit book. Learned a lot, but unpredictable and disorganized.
Karen brings her passion to the table. If you have a genuine interest in the subject she teaches and demonstrate it by participating in discussions you will do well in her class. She has a tendency to overlook small errors if the work as a whole has been presented in an appealing and logical manner. Take her class if you enjoy creative work.
Very hard maker, would not take her again just for that reason. She attempts to make the materail interesting, but her instructing style was not for me,
Karen is a very knowledgeable and passionate instructor. She doesn't put up with any BS and expects more from her students then just a mediocre level of effort. So if you're looking of an easy A, don't take her class. If however you are actually interested in learning something about literature and film she is definitely the teacher for you.
Have taken this class before, and she totally butchered it. When I left her class it's as if I hadn't learned a thing. Usually an A student and got a C-.
Almost the end of semester but she taught us close to nothing. Lets us off early and doesn't make any effort to help us improve our writing. Also, she can be very rude and look down on people who don't excel at writing. I really want my money back.
I loved her personality! She made the course very interesting and enjoyable to come. However I felt like I did not learn that much. She likes to end the class early, and does not give good descriptions on what the assignments are about unless you ask lots of questions. She does give good feedback on papers, but is a tough marker.
Didn't learn anything this semester. Wasted tuition on this course.
Karen Budra is fantastic. She's passionate about what she teaches and not only does it show, but it's kind of infectious. Really loved this class and the way she presented the material.
Karen Budra was easily one of the most knowledgeable and inspiring professors I've ever had. I'm writing this review as I'm searching to sign up for another of her classes! I really enjoyed her teaching style, and learned far more than just English (we were constantly surprised by her broad knowledge). Fully intend to take classes from her again.
take this teacher if you want to lower your GPA because you will be lucky to get anything above B- on any of your essays unorganized teaching, cut classes short, talks about gothic studies half the class learned absolutely nothing, will never take again
Karen is my favourite English prof I've had by far. While not the easiest prof, she will go out of her way to accommodate students if they have a genuine interest in the material. Very interesting lectures and great feedback.
Karens lectures are very insightful and intelligent. She is my favourite teacher at Langara. I love how she dresses in theme with the movies.
Karen is extremely knowledgable and passionate about film. I learned a great deal from her in this course on Cult Film. It was also the most enjoyable class I have taken.
She's a great person but I didn't know what I was getting until the end of the semester. We had one in class essay and everything else was assigned within the last week of school. Instructions were very unclear and did not help with how to write essays.
Karen is a very fun and knowledgeable teacher. She definitely likes seeing creative projects and papers, but offers more traditional options and doesn't grade them differently. Go to the lectures, take simple notes and pick an interesting topic for any papers and you'll do great!
Karen is the best teacher I had at Langara. Her lectures are very informative and inspiring. The class on cult film was incredibly interesting. For our final project we got to make a film in groups. It was a lot of work, but very rewarding in the end. I would love to take another class with her.
Very passionate about literature and film. She's a great pick if you enjoy those topics as well. However, she expects you to know the basics of writing an essay prior to starting the course. Her lectures focus on the content of the stories, rather than how improve your writing. If you're there just for credit, I would recommend another instructor.
Karen is one of those rare and brilliant profs who are generous with sharing their wealth of knowledge and really want you to get a lot out of the class; this course was eye opening, inspirational, engaging, and informative. Would love her for many other classes!
Karen is a nice lady but literally the worst English teacher Ive ever had in my entire life. She had poor communication the entire class and she cannot clearly explain what she wants you to do. Her questions that she would give us for assignments made almost no sense and were so vague. Unless ur an English genius dont take this class .
Karen is a nice person, but do not take her class!! Hard marker and did not clearly write or explain instructions for projects. After completing all pre reqs for Nursing and achieving good grades - this is the only class that brought my GPA down and now I have to retake it. Waste of time and money.
I took her cult film class back in 2018 - it helped me realize that I wanted to study film! Karen has a lovely personality, accessible lecturing style and great taste in film! The class itself was pretty straight forward and a good primer on film history with a cult/horror edge. I'm not at Langara anymore but would 100% take a class with her again!
Karen is sweet and kind. However, she does not teach and give instructions, no homework. I didn't learn anything from her and learned much more from the substitute who replaced her for just one day. She does not give back your marks for assignments. The only time I got my mark back was for the in-person poetry essay which was marked very tough.
Pros: Karen is passionate about film and loves to get students involved in uncovering deeper meanings and subtexts. I really enjoyed her lectures. She leaves a lot of room for creative expression in the assignments. Cons: Grading can be late, it's often unclear what is required in assignments, so ask for clarification.
Karen clearly knows what she is talking about and the things she says are really interesting. ENGL 1130 was extremely easy if you like film or are interested in it, she gave basically no homework except for the main project and some little ones. Super nice lady, good vibe, final was hardish.
Such a fun professor! I loved taking her film class!! Make sure you get a clear understanding of the assignments because they can be quite confusing and although I love her she was not the best at explaining them...
She lives up to her name... Doesn't explain well and hard marker. At least I didn't have to buy a textbook.
Karen was a fabulous lecturer who was able to make her students understand the ideas and concepts of novel, poetry and film. You can feel her passion of teaching these subjects, and is very experienced in the subject matter. Because of Covid-19, changes had to be made in terms of grading. Wish grading was more clear, but I can't complain. Got an A.
Karen is awesome. She is sweet and cares about her students. Gives great feedback on your essays so you know exactly what to work on for the following one. She holds a lot of knowledge about film and writing, I recommend taking her for ENGL 1123!
She grades everything very toughly. There was not much writings to get done during the semester and improve on. Classes were useless. She wasted most of the time. There was only 4 assignments and final is not cumulative. If you are someone who improves through practice then do not take her. Otherwise, she is very wonderful teacher. Tough grader!
She is suchhhh a sweet person. Her syllabus is quite confusing and the goal posts move often, but she is engaging and is able to meet you where you are at. Her lectures are interesting, and she is more interested in cultivating a good vibe in the class rather than teaching a strict set of criteria.
Overall not a good prof, would not recommend her at all
don't take her class.
This is the worst instructor I've ever had. She barely provides any guidance for assignments and quizzes, and when she does, it never makes sense. She frequently has tantrums, similar to a toddler. Her Brightspace page is disorganized, and she doesn't communicate what to do to prepare for the next class, yet still holds high expectations.
Drama Queen, attendance is compulsory to students but she can come and go as she wants. Having a headache and the weather is not good can be excuse for not coming to class.
I didnt know my participation grade or my final exam grade or my quizzes, because she never updated them. I waited for the results on Brightspace, nothing. So I turned to student system, and know a result. I don't know if I am scored fairly. This is a very SUBJECTIVE course already, unlike maths, so choose the instructor carefully.
Chaotic organization.
