Truly one of the best teacher around. It was weekend course, but she made it fun enough that I didn't mind going. She is super intelligent, super nice and genuinely cares about her students. Her tests are hard, but it is all from the book and there are also a ton of extra credit opportunities. I have started to like biology because of her. THE BEST
AWESOME teacher, but the tests are hard. Be prepared and you will do just fine. She likes her students and gives ample opportunities to do well. She even made me like biology for the first time.
I posted earlier, but wrote the wrong class. I took BIO 102, not 101 with her. But, she is still one of the best teachers around
Easily the greatest professor i have ever had. She explains everything clearly, has powerpoints already set up in blackboard, and really helpful, and she jokes around.
She is the worst teacher I have ever had. Her notes for class are useless and too long and expects microbiology to be your only interest outside of class. If you miss a class she gets offended and upset with you and when you ask her for help she has an attitude and is snotty. She is also biased towards certain students, meaning favorites
you definitely learn in this class.ALOT of assignments but they help your grade significantly. MUST STUDY ALOT.Do your assignments on time, study material provided on study-guide.See her if you have questions, attend class, you will earn A.She is quick at responding to emails. She is nice, will only write you recommendation if you earn B or better.
Very horrible professor.
Dr. B is a great teacher. She is soo helpful and really cares about her students. As long as you keep working hard she is willing to help you succeed. Her tests are really hard and you need to study for them, but she provides study guide which helps a lot. She also has a game called BIO JEOPARDY for review for the test. She is fair grader.
The thing about Dr. B is, if you are not trying she can tell. I don't personally have that much interest in the subject but Dr. B saw I was making effort and she helped me a lot. To pass this class sit in the front section, read the chapters and do the work in lab, I got C's and B's on the tests and still passed with a B. Great Proffesor.
nice & funny, but dont take her. 55% average on her tests, lots of homework that can help your grade, but only if you actually get the questions right. goes too fast on powerpoints, AND SHE KNOWS EVERY STUDENTS NAME EVEN WHEN A HUGE CLASS. she will notice if youre not there. and must go to labs, quiz every lab day. dont take even if last option
hard class, but still an awesome teacher. somehow makes her lectures the least boring as possible and is ALWAYS willing to help. the only people that fail her classes are the people that refuse to accept the extra help she is willing to give.
Nice, funny, and helpful. Good if you're a bio major, otherwise, don't take this class. My 3.5 GPA dropped drastically because of her class and though she's a nice person, i would NEVER recommend this to anyone. ever.
I showed my friend who's a bio major at a 4-year university her tests and she was surprised how hard they were for a bio 101 class. Her tests have a 55% average, very small to no multiple choice. I had a 4.0 before this class and it ruined my gpa.
Dr. B is the best I loved her! If you're here to get an education take her. If you want a spoon fed A don't even think about it.
Horrible professor! I was late to class due to unusual traffic and I already live 1 hour away so she gave me a zero for a class quiz. Anything she ever explains is never explained clearly but it shouldn't even matter cause its never on the exams. I got a B+ but if it weren't her class I was taking I would've have had a 4.0 GPA
I was scared my some of the comments on here but if you do your work and put a reasonable amount of effort into it you'll be fine. People complain because they slack off and don't study. Her labs are very straightforward and she helps with them a lot. I would definitely take her again. It was a great class!!
Best and most knowledgeable prof. ever! She will learn everyone's name whether you sit in the back. Attendance is the key to success in earning a good grade. Print out the notes online & bring them to class to follow along. She provides help, puts up study guides before each test and does class jeopardy to review the day before. 8 hw assignments
Such an amazing professor! She truly cares about the student, even giving numerous extra credit assignments that boost your grade! There were three tests and an optional final. She did a resource hunt at the end of the semester, which was practically an easy A if you followed the instructions. She gave quizzes out in lab, but went over them before.
Intelligent and observant... you can very much tell that she LOVES what she does. Makes an effort to personally know each student to the best of her ability. Her hobbit-like size suits her witty personality very well, shes too adorable. Definitely my favorite professor, the type you actually want to ask questions because of the way she answers you.
Before attending this class I had a preconceived notion that this was going to be a very hard class because of my previous Micro prof. Dr. B is an amazing and passionate prof and is willing to help you if you help yourself. The assignments are fun and if you pay attention and study, you will make a good grade. VERY fair professor! LOVED her!!
She's very excited about what she teaches, loves it. This class is challenging but if you show up and take notes you'll pass. Exams are super difficult be sure to study up.
DO NOT TAKE HER! She hands out easy study guides which are the COMPLETE opposite of the test. She is a PowerPoint Professor, but she does give mandatory background information during class to help with the test and worksheets. Her lab is easy, but there's always a quiz so be on time! I studied hard, always showed up and got a C+ for the semester.
If u get off on the wrong foot with this professor, she'll hold a grudge till the end of the semester. Her lectures are all over the place; she often mumbles about things at random which makes it near impossible to note-take. Her final exam was easily the hardest exam I have ever taken and no amount of studying will prepare u for it. Impossible!Smh
SHE WANTS EVERYONE TO GET AN A. JUST FOLLOW WHAT SHE SAYS. SHE ALWAYS EMPHASIZES WHAT IS GOING TO BE ON THE TEST WHICH IS USUALLY FROM THE POWERPOINT OR JEOPARDY GAMES. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF ALL EXTRA CREDIT
I LOVE HER! She saw that i was trrying and she will bump your grade if you meet the reqiurement. Like if your grade is a 69.5, she'll bump to 70. Shes helpful and you can tell she feels bad when people do bad in her class. Friendly, Good Teacher, Smart, and would DEFINITELY recommend to anyone who is not a big fan of science like i am!!
Dr.B loves biology and will talk about it for days. Labs are easy and she will give you the answers to the tests in lab before you take a quiz which is every lab. She knows what shes talking about but is not good at teaching it. Exams are tough & if you do not like bio then you will not get it in this class . Everything is fast paced and confusing
Exams are hard but lots of extra credit
she is nice and knowledgeable.
Dr. B is a great professor. She makes you work hard for your grade but more importantly makes you work hard for your knowledge. Very inspirational and gives tons of fun, interesting, and engaging extra credit assignments to boost your grade. Study guides are given for exams and she is always available to answer questions via email or in person.
Exams are tough, but she is a fair grader. She can be somewhat rude at times when you ask questions, but she is generally helpful. She uses a lot of real-world examples on her tests, so make sure you focus on those during the lectures. Overall it was a good class. Go to the lectures, do the assignments, study hard, and you should be fine.
Karen Bushaw Newton is a funny, and down to earth professor that can be sarcastic. She engages the class to participate, and just wants students to come to class, do the work, and have fun. Quizzes and homework is a pinch, just study for the exams! You don't really need a textbook, and she will give you help. Oh by the way, she's a botanist.
Dr. B is tough; but she is also fair, fun, and cares more than most profs you will ever have. Expect to be challenged, and learn a ton. She's funny, quirky and wonderfully sarcastic. I am forever grateful to her, for all she taught me, and the memorable ways in which she did it. Take her. You'll work hard, and love every minute of it.
I think her class is average. Her test aren't too hard, however her homework can be hard. You don't get much homework, its only once every couple of weeks and if you do them you'll be OK in the class. She does talk about random things through out her lectures but its not too bad. Good Luck, if you have her. I would take her again.
She is a great professor. tests are indeed very tough however they are doable if you study and come to class. The first test was in person the rest of them were online at home free response with very challenging questions. I can truly say I learned so much from this class and I surprised myself when I got an A in such a hard course. She is awesomd
Dr. B is a good teacher. Lab is interesting but mandatory, if you don't show up then don't expect to pass. Lecture is a bit confusing because she does tend to ramble on. The homework assignments are clear and straight forward. Test are hard but do-able if you make an effort to do well. If you put in the work this class is no problem.
You will learn a lot from Dr. B, about the subject matter as well as just interesting fun facts about things going on in science.
Dr. B is enthusiastic and smart, but can be confusing and come off as condescending and mean. She does have a soft spot for her students, but she shows it weirdly. Bottom line: Never skip. Go to her office for help. Don't talk when she's talking. Do the work. Also choose your class group wisely. You'll be stuck with one another the whole semester!
Dr. B is an amazing professor! I took her for bio 101&102, she is absolutely amazing! I'D DEF TAKE HER AGAIN! She makes her lectures really fun. She has 4 exam and very few homework.I enjoyed going to class everyday. She does not let you turn in late work but she gives you enough time to do it. As long as you study her exams are easy to pass.
Dr. B is an amazing professor! I took her for bio 101&102, she is absolutely amazing! I'D DEF TAKE HER AGAIN! She makes her lectures really fun. Dr. B is an amazing professor (i don't say this lightly or often, either). She is a tough grader and will make you work for your grade. She does not post notes like other professors so make sure you go to lectures and take detailed notes. She is definitely my recommendation if you're going into the healthcare field as she puts an emphasis on that.
Dr. B is one of my favorite teachers. I took her for 101 and tbh wasn't her biggest fan at first but she is a really fun teacher, she obviously likes her subject so i took her again for 102. Theres a bit homework and a lot of chances for extra credit. If you don't come to lab don't expect to pass
Best science professor ever! Lectures and lab are incredibly interesting and she makes it fun. Dr. B inspires people to be the best they can be so you gotta work hard. It's a microbio class so it's gonna be hard but studying and reading the textbook will help getting a high grade. She gives a ton of opportunities for extra credit so take them!
Overall, GREAT class but the professor can be tough at times. She really wants you to learn and use the material in the healthcare world. However, she gets annoyed if you ask her too many questions. Tests are hard and the textbook is rarely used.
Dr. B is very passionate about micro. However, she forgets that she is teaching 100 level classes. She posts blank power points then talks a mile a minute during lecture without thoroughly answering questions. Her tests aren't hard but really confusing. It's hard to ask her questions in lab without her yelling or being condescending.
Most terrible Professor I have ever had! Rude, disrespectful toward students. DO NOT PICK HER AS YOUR PROFESSOR, you WILL REGRET it!
If you enjoy feeling like you have to walk on eggshells around your professor. Or like when professors are condescending and inconsistent in their grading criteria. Or enjoy when professors threaten to make a tests as hard tests for grad students. If you like being yelled at and feeling like an idiot 10/10 recommend. if not don't take her.
Although the professor is knowledgeable and passionate for the subject, she does not know how to teach it to students who are new to the subject. Fast paced lectures with a huge amount of work load. Does not accept late assignments even a minute after the deadline. Hard to talk to as she gets mad easily. I really don't recommend her..
All in all, great professor. She can be a little sharp when asked a question, but genuinely cares. Lots of material, but will be fairly straightforward with study guides. WILL MAKE YOU WORK FOR YOUR GRADE, NOT FOR SLACKERS! But it'll make you learn the material. Attend the lectures, take notes, study, and stay update and you'll be fine.
DO not take her. She's super moody, arrogant, and condescending. She yells a lot during labs and will shame you in front of the class if you do or say something wrong. She is not tolerant of other people. I was ready to work for my grade but she is the most ambiguous and harsh grader. She won't explain why you got something wrong.
not a good professor. You'd be better off taking someone who is good at teaching and answering questions. Not approachable and extremely rude.
Dr B is one of the best professors I've had. If you pay attention during lectures, you'll have almost all of the information you need for exams; her challenge questions give you just about everything else. She allows for a good amount of joking around in class, creating a close-knit room of classmates. VERY smart woman with lots of experience.
Dr. B is one of the best professors I have ever had the pleasure to meet. In class, she's tough and only wants the best for her students. She teaches at an upper graduate level because she knows that teaching at that level will help her students in the future. She's tough because she cares and you would be lucky to find another professor like her.
Dr. B. works so hard for her students. I am stunned by some of these comments. She outlines everything in the syllabus. She reminded us of assignments and wanted us to participate. I didn't always prepare so that was my fault. According to the note she just sent 19 out of 23 made C or better. She also gives extra credit.
Dr. B knows her stuff. She also knows how micro and nursing go together. I took the TEAS and there was so much micro. I was prepared because of Dr. B. You have to work in her course but she was there in her office when I visited her office hours. She responds to e-mails. She encourages participation. She is so fair and follows her syllabus.
Lectures don't have good organization, skips around textbook. Can be condescending and confusing, dislikes being asked to clarify a topic. Open note (handwritten only) pop quizzes that are based from her lectures NOT the textbook. Fast and fair grader, offers tons of extra credit. Expects a LOT in lab, so come prepared! A very difficult course!
As most in this course are new to college, gives very tough love and tries to help her students assimilate. Lectures can be confusing, important topics not taught in enough detail. Read the textbook! She gives reminders on assignments, tons of extra credit, if you fail it's really your fault. She makes labs fun & easy. Won't accept late work!
TAKE HER CLASS IF YOU DONT WANT TO PASS
Had such a hard time, professor hates being asked questions, will literally scream at you if she doesnt like a question. Make sure to READ LABS BEFORE CLASS she will expect you to know every detail about it the next day. Hardest course you will have. Final is open notes because she knows no one can pass the course
This was a difficult course. Pop quizes are difficult, you are able to use notes but you literally have to take notes on EVERYTHING from lecture. She grades lab exercises, and is a tough grader. She is nice but can be a little rude, better pay attention.
Dr. B is super helpful and wants to help those who want to help themselves. She is happy to talk to you about the lectures and questions you may have. A lot of work, a lot of studying, and a lot of reading. I have a lot of respect for her, she will give you the tools to succeed but WILL NOT hand you any grade you do not deserve.
Dr. B is really great. She encourages questions and active discussion and goes out of her way to make classes and lab fun. Her tests are definitely difficult (Some had short essays!), but honestly, all you have to do is study. If you know the material well and put in some work, you'll get an A, no problem. If you don't study, it'll show.
I have had a many different professors at NOVA and she really cares. Her lectures are good. Even better, if you participate you can get points for participating. I used all my participation slips and made a B in the course! I had made a C in 101. She makes it possible for you to succeed.
Dr. B is awesome! You truly learn from her class. She is a bit of a tough grader but is really invested in the student learning the material other than just memorizing answers.
Doctor B is a great professor, she really works to make sure you understand the material. She also provides a lot of extra credit opportunities to ensure that you'll make a good grade. Explains everything in depth, but gets annoyed if you put in no effort, which is understandable.
Great Prof. You get the grade you work for. Clear grading. Available outside of class, & extra credit given. 1 BIG project, 3 big test, final exam optional, drops lower score. She will help you if she sees you trying. Gave me free textbook, lab book, & believed in me. I'd retake.
Dr B is a tough lady that works hard and expects you to do the same. She still however gives you all tools to succeed. I hated biology but she made it somewhat ok, would not recommend this class if you don't like working with other people as you will have to for lab.
She assigns a variety of activities with tons of extra credit, getting a passing grade is not difficult. It is her attitude. She is condescending and created an environment in which students did not want to participate because she lashes out when incorrect. Emotionally unharnessed and inappropriate. I ended up reporting her.
It's not about whether or not you'll pass, you can; it's about her tone and attitude answering students' questions. Gets angry when she has to repeat herself or explain a concept again when this is 101. Acts very rude, dismissive, and condescending to those who aren't very good at understanding bio. If you want to be talked down to, take her.
Professor Bushaw-Newton is the rudest professor I've seen at NOVA. She'll disregard all questions and get mad at you for asking them. She expects you to participate but gives you every reason not to because the second you unmute and talk and don't say what she want's to hear, she get's mad at you and goes off in front of the whole class.
Her attitude is very discouraging for a learning environment. Very condescending and sometimes on her high horse. She expected us to take notes for 6+ hr lectures. Her notes did not always match the exams. That said, I did take an 8 week microbiology class. If you can be consistent with turning the work in, you can pass. She is passionate about bio
Dr B can somewhat be mean but she really cared for her students. She gave us some of the exam questions AND answers cause she really wants A's. Allows multiple attempts for exams. Easy labs. Only stresses on participation. She does point system grading. So you only need to recieve 900 points to get an A and youre done our class loved her
Great teacher will want you to know and pass her class.
Please don't take this professor B! she's rude, talk down on students, and will yell at you at for asking questions. She's very moody. she don't know how to teach and her attitude to really bad! Her exam is nothing like her lecture or power points.
she was soooo rude. she called my group a bunch of degenerates. shes insanely moody, and is overall just very tough. shes not very helpful at all. this woman is literally the reason i changed my major.
The worst professor I have ever had! She is VERY rude!!! She is never going to help you to have a good grade! She always gets mad when you ask her a question! If you want to save you nervous system then you should avoid this professor!!!
Dr. B was firm but fair. Her labs were fun and enjoyable. Her lectures were always interesting. Her grading system is based on points. A student needs go earn 900/1000 points for an A. If they do that, the student does not need to take the final. If a student chooses to take the final she will replace it with the lowest test. I would take her again
Professor B is a great professor who wants you to succeed. However, she wants you to do your part and work for the grade you want. She is very knowledgeable and I enjoyed the challenges within this course. She is fair and treats all her students the same. This is a difficult subject with hard content so you'd need to put in the work.
She cares about her students and their future. Participation is key. Plenty of extra credit opportunities and tells you when the pop quizzes are happening. Exams are open book but intense so take good notes. She lets you work with your team for labs and quizzes. She gives plenty of time for assignments and is always available for help. Nerd out!!
She was extremely condescending and didn't care for individual students growth. Most of the stuff on the study guide isn't on the test too. She doesn't like it when students ask questions and she publicly humiliates people in lab if there is an accident. Never take her class unless you like being talked down to.
She doesn't care about students. She favors students and is unfair. She doesn't respond to emails. She's passive agressive in class and will call you out for anything. She's unfair at grading. Her study guides don't match with anything on the exams. Don't take her.
don't' take her if you genuinely want to learn and understand biology. She is straight up mean and condescending and will speak down on you.
Professor B is tough but in all ways you would want. She allows 3 cheat sheets for exams (front and back) she offers many opportunities for extra credit, ALL labs and lab quizzes are a group effort. She doesn't take late work, but she allows plenty of time to complete it all. All assignments are all posted and explained first day of class
She is strict. I felt like I was not good enough. Even if I did good, she was never motivating or something but was the first one to point out the slightest mistakes I did but in a demeaning way. you have extra credit opportunities. Her notes are not that helpful for the exams. I would not take her class but she is good at what she has to offer
Keep your head down and don't make any mistakes. If you put effort into the class, you'll be fine. She can be so condescending it makes you feel like the smallest person ever when you make a minor mistake. In my opinion, it's only one semester, so it's easy to just get through.
This is my second time taking Dr. B. She encourages her students to participate, apply, and believe in themselves. Multiple opportunities to clarify, question, or chat with the Professor. I've had multiple Professors throughout my education process at NOVA, and none of them have cared and shown kindness like Dr. B has. Definitely recommend her!
Please don't take this professor!!! She will make you feel so useless and below average. she is RUDE and will embarrass you at any given chance. Save yourself and get another professor. i feel like she has deep rooted issues and anger issues which she vents out on students. her exams are way off her study guide.
only good thing about this course is the 3 pages front & back cheat sheet for exams that follows a study guide that barely helps with the test. does not post full slide, if you miss a lecture you miss a lot of info. goes through slides so fast you can barely get notes in. if you're not already good at bio i wouldn't recommend taking her.
She lets students use 3 pages of notes front and back on exams along with giving a study guide, so if you get below a B on tests it's usually from being lazy. She has multiple extra credit assignments and gives 10 attempts on her canvas homework assignments to there's plenty of opportunities to get good grades. Hates when ppl are late.
A funny and engaging lecturer with lots of experience, sets clear expectations and standards for the class. A tough but fair grader who gives lots of opportunities for extra credit. Allows handwritten notes on exams. Do not expect hand-holding or coddling, DO expect a wide variety of interesting and engaging assignments. Have her again this term!
She is a teacher with immense problems. If you disagree with her or argue against a decision or policy you will be yelled at and berated in front of the entire class for her own ego. She has a no late-work policy, with zero exceptions. I had a class mate attacked by a dog who was hospitalized, and they were not granted an exception, either.
It is impossible to say what needs to be said in 350 characters but nevertheless, she is very intelligent, very good at teaching, however, can be very disrespectful and rude. She did me a huge favor which was nice, but ruined it by accusing me of things when she misunderstood be, she has a huge ego and jumps to conclusions. Very fast grader though.
This was my second time taking her class, she gives plenty of extra credit opportunities and as long as you show up to labs you will get a 100% in the lab portion of the class. She HATES when students are late or disruptive so be punctual and you'll do well! Also she lets 2 pages of hand written notes on tests so if you do bad its out of laziness.
She's a *very* enthusiastic professor. That can either be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on your stance on Biology as a subject. For me, her lectures were exhausting sometimes. Besides that, assignments and quizzes weren't difficult, and labs (shoutout to my lab group) were a lot of fun. She gave my final project a personal shoutout too.
She is incredibly rude to her students, like she does not want them to succeed. She has a zero late work policy and little empathy for students who have extenuating circumstances. She does offer some extra credit at the beginning of the semester but it is few and far between. She berates her students in lab and gets mad at you for asking questions
Dr. B talks fast, goes on pointless rants, and makes students feel extremely incapable for asking questions. She cuts people off mid sentence and announces "no more questions" like it's a power trip. She flips out if anyone so much as whispers while she's speaking yelling at the whole class and calling people out by name. Do not take her class.
If you want to continue to have a will to live please don't take this Professor. When my grandma passed she was not understanding at all. She embarrasses students to boost her ego, she even made a girl cry. She hates questions, cuts people off, and exams are never aligned to study guide.
The lectures are long and pretty boring but if you pay attention and ask questions you'll pass the test with flying colors. She likes to talk and she won't take any disrespect but she is overall a great teacher that is willing to help. Make sure to not be late for lab cause she will kick you out if your more than 20 minutes late.
She creates an environment where students feel uncomfortable asking questions & belittles them in front of others. Her behavior is unprofessional, and she seems to take pride in making the course unnecessarily difficult. Overall, she does not foster a supportive learning environment, and it's been the most frustrating academic experiences I've had.
Made an account just to say her attitude is awful, she loves to turn little problems into a bigger mess. She's honestly just annoying and you aren't allowed to ask questions.
Just took her BIO101 class, she has an amazing system of allowing you to drop 1/4 of the exams incase you do really bad or cant take one. Her labs are really fun and as long as your doing what your supposed to be she is a great professor (as any of them would be), just take notes and pay attention to lectures and you WILL pass.
Plenty of extra credit opportunities. You have to put in effort in your grade, and you will get an A. She sets clear expectations. She wants her students to succeed. Dr.B is a great professor, she knows biology like the back of her hand. I think her passion for biology is what really drove me to change my major to bio from business.
Dr. B is highly passionate about Biology. She is a great lady, an accomplished professor, maintaining a healthy routine and expects the best from her students. Having said that, her attitude may seem harsh, but it is only because she cares about us. She will be hard on you, for a good reason, and if you have a family emergency, she will be caring.
Dr. B is an amazing professor, she is tough but ONLY because she cares!!! She loves biology and gives plenty of extra credit opportunities. She also allows for 2 pg. hand written notes, all your quizzes for exams which is pretty good. It's a lot of information to take in. Pay attention and show up on time and do your assignments and you'll be fine.
