Very hard to follow. Does not explain her examples well and seems to be having a competition with herself to see how many steps she can skip while demonstrating problems on the board. Excellent for a review, bad for learning concepts for the 1st time.
She is unclear and very hard to follow when explaining things. Has bad office hours. Very fat. The exams that she gives out are exactly as they are in the book, so if you do your homework, you should be able to overcome her inability to teach clearly.

I like her class, and I'd say she does an acceptable job of explaining things. I guess it is MATH 129 though...
Hard teacher likes to derive everything instead of using calculators.
Very helpful, just have to ask. Much clearer than some profs.
she is very unorganized which makes it difficult to be an organized student.
Very difficult, but I learned a lot. Very helpful, just have to put effort to receive it. Do not take if you want an easy A.
She is a good lecturer but her test are always harder than the hw. Its hard to get an A in the class from a beginning math class. she drills in too much info into her students. she is very helpful but i would prefer another prof cuz her test are hard.
If she is writing the final then good luck to you.. but if it's a department final then her class will prepare you... the class itself is difficult but the finall will be cake.
Frankly, she scares me. I haven't understood a word of what she's taught so far either.

hard prof, no doubt. but very thorough and dedicated to helping those who ask. intimidating at first, she becomes the kind of teacher you might rememeber for a while because she really has such a great personality.

I have been doing ok in her class since it started, which says something because I am extremely innumerate.:p She is very frank but if you want help you really have t set aside time and ask for it. She is also pretty funny, so I don't absolutly hate going

horrible teacher!! is very unclear, class is boring. she is also a flake. seems to be incredibly unorganized. pays more attention to minor details such as attendance then the quality of her lectures. The mounds of homework give no real help. this is the worst math class i have ever taken.
well I passed the class but did not pass one test...so I'm thankful for that but she really isn't clear as to what we're actually doing in the class.
The amount of homework and busy work in this class is shoking. Attendance is mandatory, but she rarely ever actually lectures. She usually just talks too much about random stuff and takes 20 mins to take attendance, then finishes by doing 1 or 2 math problems. She's nice but all the work and her examples are no help, very ambiguous.
Karen is a bit unorganized but she is extremely helpful during office hours.
Easy class with large amounts of work. If you do the work, you will get an A no problem. Karen is disorganized, but funny.
The only bad thing about this class was the amounts of homework given. She explained things clear most of the time, and if she didn't she would review it again. Tests were on topics she taught about. Reviews before the tests always! Very nice.
By far one of the most caring professors I have had. She is really helpful and clear about what is expected of you. You do get a lot of homework but in the end it all pays off. If you are a "slacker" then you obviously shouldn't take this class.
Karen seems angry, even when she is explaining math problems. She yells an awful lot and is very intimidating. The first day of class she told us that maybe two of us would pass her class. she is cold. However, she is very clear about her expectations and is helpful during office hours.
She is an AWFUL teacher. Completely contradicts herself with the homework and then blames the student stating that they should have made her explain better. Takes absolutely no personal responsibility and is horribly disorganized. Class is completely USELESS. She is rude and should be avoided if you want to actually learn anything useful.
The "mandatory extra credit" project at the end of the semester was so difficult, I didn't even finish it. But the tests were easy and all had a curve because no one bothered to study. She is really disorganized, but very nice.
She's crazy loud but really comprehensible if you keep up with her.
Crazy expectations. She is too scary and intimidating to ask her for help. Would not recommend her if you want to pass the class.
Karen had a great personality. I didn't mind going to her class, but that didn't mean that I learned any math. She would consistently skip steps to the problem which made her teaching style an issue. Math is learned by repetition; one time will not do it. I think she has potential if she changes her teaching habits.
DEspite what some of the other reviews say, I'm terrible at math and she was a great teacher. She was always willing to help me with the classwork, etc.
Takes forever for attendance. Terrible at explaining topics. Writes extremely fast. Unorganized. When she teaches, she yells and has an angry look on her face. But other times, she is really kind, and says "what's up man" to some guys in my class. She can be funny.
great at teaching math.
Karen is extremely good at math and assumes everyone else knows it as well as she does. She doesn't prepare for her lectures. She just wings all her lectures and makes tons of mistakes. She skips as many steps as possible and scribbles all over the board making it very difficult to follow her and take decent notes.
Took her for summer school. She skips a lot of steps sometimes but if you ask her questions she always explains. Very helpful in office hours. I'd recommend her for other math classes; she REALLY knows her stuff.
Awful Teacher. I've never been bad at math in my whole entire life... that is when i'm actually taught it. I've never failed a test until her class. We started out with 60+ kids and now were down to less than 20 because everyone realizes she is awful.
Love her teaching methods!! Really easy class IF YOU ATTEND. otherwise you won't understand what's going on.
Ms Champine was extremely helpful and a really wonderful professor, i find that students who complain dont do the work. I really worked hard for the class and i got a good grade,it is calculus, you have to practice it. I would recommend her every time.
I had Karen for 121, 180, and a math lab. Her tests are easy as long as you've done the homework; extremely important to do the homework. If you attend the lecture and keep up with the suggested practice problems, you're golden. If not, you'll fail miserably. You must put forth the effort, but as long as you do, you can pull of an A!
Loved her, she was super helpful, and if you ask for extra help, she will do everything to help you understand. I really liked her a lot. Attendance is mandatory, and her tests are easy if you do the homework. It's not an easy class, but she really does all she can to help you succeed.
hard subject (college trig), even harder homeworks and tests. awesome teacher. learned alot. if you're a serious about learning and not just passing take her class.
I had her for a group tutor session for int. algebra. She's nice and kinda funny - but disorganized in her teaching. She was just doing problems off the top of her head - frequently made mistakes on the board, which made her really hard to follow.
Karen is a fantastic teacher! She loves math and loves being a teacher and has done it a long time. She skips some steps, but I kept up just fine. A lot of people in my class had a hard time following, but I'm pretty sure it's because they really should have been in a much lower math, like remedial. I definitely recommend Karen!
I loved Math until I took her class. She insulted me when i raised my hand for her to go over a problem and called me stupid. DO NOT take this class. She's VERY disorganized, skips many steps, and writes very lightly so you can't see any of it. She doesn't curve exams even when the majority of the class is failing. I hate Math now thanks to her.
This teacher shouldn't be teaching anything related to math. Exams are extremely difficult, gives no curves, notes are very unorganized, she skips steps when lecturing, and when she is wrong she blames the students to cover her mistake. She assumes everyone has her level of understanding of the material. TAKE THIS COURSE WITH ANOTHER TEACHER.
I have taken Calculus three times at UNM and Mrs. Champine is the best teacher I've found so far She's tough but so is calculus her tests that are just like the final made by the math coordinator of the Department Some are even directly out of the book. If you go to class and do your homework and go to her office hours you will do fine
hard but great teacher
Easiest class ever. Hardly ever used the book, didn't get homework. You have to show up, but she lets you use your phone and doesn't even care if you're paying attention. Even so, this class was definitely the highlight of my week more than once, it was truly fun.
This class was fun and easy, as long as I did the homework, which was out of the book. It was easy and interesting. That's not to say that studying wasn't necessary. Champine came off rather gruff at first but she has a lot of irresponsible students to deal with so I understand. She is actually really nice. Attendance is mandatory.
Words cannot explain my disgust. She makes you teach yourself, adds stuff on tests her in class work doesn't cover. Pointless projects which were graded extremely tough. I took a stats 381 class and found that much easier than her class which is made for people who aren't good with math. Never take this teacher please trust me
I'm extremely good at Math. This woman has an awful sense of teaching and I highly recommend you do not take her. So many people have dropped out in 3 weeks just cause they figured out she's terrible. I got a 0/10 ... there were only 3 questions and I had partially correct answers.
An interesting lady, but not a born teacher. Talks too fast, assumes you are a math genius, and makes even the most simple concepts difficult. Take another teacher.
I love math and was always really good at it but with her i feel like a total idiot. She assumes you're a genius and her tests are nothing like what we covered.
Im not to fond of math but i get it well i did until this class. She goes through half the material on the test and only does simple problems. she assumes we are at her level of understanding.she said she isnt easy because we are engineering majors but im not! this class is truely frustrating!!!
Some of the most challenging classes I've had. She is a knowledgeable mathematician who is eager to teach what she knows, however, you are expected to manage your own studying in her class. There's no spoon feeding of material and SHE TEACHES TO THOSE WHO ARE DOING THE WORK OUTSIDE OF CLASS. She will spend the time needed outside of class to help
I am good at math, however this class was horrid. Nothing really useful, if she didn't like you, she was rude and wouldn't help you, however if she liked you, you were treated as though you had made the biggest math discovery in the last 2000 years. Highly disorganized, and refused to help us study for several tests. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS.
Her teaching style in class is very confusing, and she teaches very fast. If you go to her office hours, she very helpful. Has a quiz every week. Her tests are a bit tough but do-alble. Must be on top of lessons every week.
Great math professor. She would not only tell you how to do the math, but why it is used and why it was discovered. This allowed for a better understanding of the concepts.
Worst Math teacher at UNM. Take Burns, or either of the Schwartz brothers, they are very helpful.
It was kind of a tough class but she offers a lot of help outside class. You just got to take advantage of it. She goes through exercises kind of quick on the board but if you keep asking she will explain things over and over again.
Extremely Difficult to understand. She runs through her lessons way to fast and doesn't show her work. Her Tests are not anything like what she teaches and she doesn't offer a lot of help.
Great proffessor. She really cares about students and wants them to understand, however if you need help, ASK FOR IT! She is a college proffesor and her tests require college thinking. however her tests are also very predictable based on lectures and quizzes. I RECCOMEND HER
This has been one of the worst classes, I have ever taken. I honestly went into this class determined to pass. It is extremely hard class. I do not recommend taking this class with her. Most of her tests do not follow what she teaches in class. I recommend that you look for another professor, just to save you the disappointment.
Its a hard class but you can pass if you study. Its college, you have to study. she curves at the end of the semester though! i think she is very clear in her lectures and they are very fair with her tests
Karen is a great teacher. Very easy going, approachable and friendly. I had her for calc 1. Yes it is a hard class with a tough work load but if you put in the time and ask her questions, getting a decent grade is totally possible.
Better study at home...
Karen is a great teacher, but she does move at a fast pace. This class is relatively easy, but only if you do the homework, which is frequent. and there are usually quizzes every class. The tests are not too bad, but there are a few papers, which is surprising for a math class. Overall she is nice, approachable, and knows what she is doing.
Don't skip class or she has it out for you. She likes to throw tricky test questions at you that she did not cover in lectures. Probably one of the worst professor's I've had.
She is very knowledgeable. This is college and you have to work for your great. However, she is extremely difficult to work with. I would say the worst Math professor at UNM. Take someone else. She is usually unprepared for lectures and her tests do not correlate with her lectures. She does not show her work. If you ask questions, she's a smartass.
The tests and notes do not correlate. Some people are born to teach, and some are not. I don't think she was meant to teach. She is willing to help sometimes though.
I enjoyed this class very much, found Karen to be personable and approachable, and thought that she cared about the students. The issue with technical classes like this is that you have to do the work to get the grade. No amount of lecturing, even by the greatest lecturer of all time, will teach you the subject. YOU have to do the work!
Good professor, very willing to help and very nice. She does assign a couple of partner projects which can be difficult. A lot of grades and a lot of grades get dropped. Take this class if you're looking for an easy required math.
Karen has a very no-nonsense personality; she is very terse. This can be a blessing and a curse. She isn't a great teacher, but she does, generally seem to be helpful if you accept her personality for what it is. She uses class time to do examples and clear up edge-cases. You need to read the book before class in order for lectures to be useful.
IN ANY CALC CLASS AT UNM (ANY PROFESSOR) - almost 80% of your grade based on 3 exams + final, weekly quizzeshomework just 20%. Karen can be a somewhat unclear lecturer, but she's alright. Study hard for the tests, including the first one, because one bad grade can sink you (no making up for it). If possible, get a better-rated teacher.
I took Professor Champine's trig twice. I failed the first time, got an A the second. She teaches from the book. If you wanna pass her class, read the thing. Take college algebra first if your algebra sucks, or you will suffer. Karen is tough, but righteously so. Her exam questions are straight from booklecture. If you care, she will too.
If you are taking any math class at UNM calc 1 or above, get ready, because it will be tough no matter what professor you have. Karen is especially tough. However, if you put in the effort you will leave the class with an excellent understanding of the material and will absolutely be prepared for higher level material going forward.
not helpful. tough grader
This class was by far my hardest. The professor's lectures are very confusing, she doesn't follow the notation she expects from us which makes it difficult knowing what she wants. When you ask her a question, she only sometimes knows the answer which can be very frustrating. The tests are not too bad though and she didn't grade too hard on them.
Difficult class unless you're very good at math. She has a very specific way she likes things done, and if you don't/ can't comply, she punishes you for it. She lectures by doing lots and lots of example problems, but explains things well if you have questions. Tests are difficult, the more studying you do, the better.
If you miss more than 3 lectures she will probably drop you, so going to class is very important. Calculus II is a very hard class, but she is a good teacher and all of the homework is posted ahead of time so you know exactly what is expected. The homework is determined by the department admin, so it will be the same regardless of your professor.
She is one of the best math professors I have had . The material is very hard to understand, but she still stand up there and explain the topic to you 5 times if she has to. She provides a lot of examples and presents material in class in a way that you could apply it to your homework.
Karen is a hard grader and she expects a lot from her students. She is an amazing person and a great teacher. She explained things for me that I never understood in any of my other classes, and has a way of doing things that will really help you if you must take further math courses.
From someone who's good at math and took calc 1 in high school, she honestly made it harder than it had to be. She expected you to already understand the concepts before class and only does examples. If she gets behind, its up to the students to make up for it, not good in math. Also her explanations confused me on things I already understood.
I had already taken this class and passed. I retook it to get a better understanding and she graded so hard I had to drop the class.
Great teacher. She's a very tough grader, but also very willing to walk you through difficult concepts and answer questions. Be prepared to visit office hours when you have questions
Karen is a really tough grader. Sometimes you'll get 0 points on an exam question just because of silly things like notation or not explaining in words what you meant. She takes attendance every day and learns everyone's names. Tests were fair. Really nice and understanding outside of class. Solid 6.5/10 prof
Honestly Karen is just one of those people; she is everything I aspire to be in a woman. Yes, she's hard and her tests are bloodly difficult but she is not impossible. She also tweeks the grades a lot at the end so as long as you're putting in the work you have nothing to fear. I failed every single quiz and still ended up with a B in the class.
Karen has a bad rep, but is an excellent professor. She has a few rules she's picky about on exams, but as long as you follow that she's really easy going. If you're confused or lost, definitely set up to meet with her during office hours, she appreciates student initiation and will respect you for asking for help. I took her for Calc 1-3.
When people in the comments say she is a hard grader they mean it. SHE IS A HARD GRADER! You can get the answer correct but if it doesn't look like she wants you will not get credit. Just take a different professor. She is a really nice person and is easy to understand, but Just Take A Different Professor! She reminds me of an english teacher.
Once you've begun to learn something, you're expected to be extremely proficient IMMEDIATELY. She writes problems on the board and gives the class 10 seconds, then loudly asks "Who's still working??" while you're desperately trying to concentrate. I need to take it slow with math or else I screw up. It doesn't have to be this rough and stressful.
Champine is really tough, and she expects you to have an already decent grasp on past material. She is not the professor who holds your hand through the class. She is serious about drops. But, she focuses on the conceptual part of whatever you're learning, which I prefer, her grading curve is pretty generous, and she's fun to talk to.
If I remember correctly there is 4 exams total, including the final. 2 partner projects. Very easy going class. Simple geometry with a small twist. Go to class because she takes attendance every day.
You will learn.
very difficult tests and different methods of teaching couldn't make it she made it very hard and I am extremely good in maths
she makes the class stressful and gives hard exams/quizzes . she is alright but if you have other choices go ahead, but basically at UNM, any calculus class is meant to be hard and load heavy.
Had her for Math129 and she was not too bad. Tests are tough if you don't study, her questions are from the book, so make sure to look at all the problems that are given and do the work. If you don't show up, you wont pass. She is very nice and willing to go over questions repeatedly, just make sure to pay attention and take notes!!!!!
class was very stressful. exams are really hared and there are pop quizzes
she might be the hardest teacher i have ever had, but after taking her for 162 and 264 i really understand and can use calculus. she will destroy your life, but you will learn calculus. she is very engaging and will help you if you ask and work hard. she is a great teacher and i respect her more than any teacher so far at unm.
I had Dr. Champine for 129 and received an A in the class. I'm not a math person, but she made this class achievable. Don't skip, class is where you learn material-and she takes attendance. Do the extra credits because they help your grade. Tests are not easy, but she tells you what to expect on each. Overall, don't slack, do study, ask Q's.
Easily accessible. Great teacher, dont let the reviews fool you. I was not expecting a good time in here and she made the course (Math264) very understandable. Shes sarcastic whos is pretty funny and overall a great professor. I would definitely take her class again.
I'm really glad I chose to take math with Prof. Champine. She comes off as a hard ass at first but as the semester goes on, people drop the course, and your class grows on her, she loosens up and it nice and funny. If you get any C you pass, offers extra credit, and there's a paper worth 20% of grade (so helpful). Take her if you struggle w/ math
Karen's a spectacular professor. She wants to be sure you actually understand the material: This isn't a class for people who want free credit. If you do your best, this professor is understanding and provides feedback on ways you can improve, or study better. She changes her teaching to accommodate the class's needs. Very clear on what to study.
Mrs. Champine is a fantastic professor! She is a great lecturer and makes sure everyone understands the material before moving on, and will go through several examples for each concept. Be sure to attend class, if you don't im not sure how you expect to pass. The class is comprised of online hw, a paper, and 3 exams. Overall, I would recommend.
She really tests you on your knowledge of the material. If you do not have a solid grasp of calc 1 and 2 you will not pass this class. Her lectures are very good and can teach you a lot on the material that other instructors will not teach you which will help you pass the final.
She is going to seem very tough at first, but don't let that intimidate you because she is a sweetheart. Basically, to pass this class you are going to need to read the sections and do the practice problems. A lot of practice problems. This is a very difficult class, so expect to put in a lot of time outside of class to do well.
I would not take this class again, she tends to skip a lot steps in her lectures and expects you to know the material before hand.
I suck at math and took 129 because of that reason. Karen is very good at explaining the material and really cares about your understanding of it. Definitely do the suggested homework probelms if you do the homework and show up to class youll pass. There is an essay, start on it early the due date will creep up on you. Careful not to slcack off!
Her class will seem intense at the beginning. Do NOT fret. Attend class and don't slack on turning in homework or studying for exams. Even if you do bad on one test, Karen is really generous near the end and will personally look into your grades to make sure you're treated fairly. She cares for ALL her students and is a great lecturer to study with
She is fantastic and very willing to help students with their struggles with the material
would not take this class again, she is too mean instructor I never had. 2 people found this useful 2 people did not find this useful
Never taking any courses with this instructor.
karen was an amazing teacher. this was my 2nd time taking this class but the first time with her, my last professor was awful. she's really kind, she wants people to pass. she really knows her stuff and can explain things well. Show up to class. Do the homework. She will help you if you actually try.
I took her for calc 2 and her class was a joke. Classmates i talked to were all failing, Her lectures consist of her throwing things on the board in 10 minutes with no explanation. Don't bother taking notes because they won't make sense and the TA's are just as useless. If you have taken calc 2 before or have all week to study you'll pass maybe
She rarely singled people out for doing something super harmless like being on their phone or whatever, but I took them as isolated incidents. Yes, there was a lot of homework, but she made herself extremely accessible and was happy to explain things again. Don't miss class. She let me take the final even though I was super late.
Great professor that makes you work for your grade, through a decent amount of homework and tough tests. She explains concepts well and will probably prepare you better for the final and future calculus classes than any other professor. Only con would be that her handwriting on the board can be hard to read so try to sit near the front.
This professor told my class that she has tenure and that she doesn't care if she fails the whole class. Extremely rude to students, especially freshman. Over half of my class failed the first test and eventually over 75% dropped the course over time. Do not take her for College Algebra.
Will never take her class again. I had to type all of my notes and assignments and I would never get credit if they weren't. I found that to be really ridiculous as I would spend most of my time constructing the notes. She also gets mad if she has to download your work, yes in an online class. So, I find it quite ironic that her name is Karen.
I would not recommend taking any class, with Karen. She does not care if the entire class fails her exams. Instead of seeing a whole class failing as a reflection of her teaching, she sees it as a reflection of the students. She is a very picky grader. She seems to get off on the power imbalance between her and her students.
Spare yourself the pain and dont take any of Karens classes. She gives no lectures/direction + unprofessional at times. When i asked for help once, she essentially told me if i didnt understand the material thats too bad and wouldnt bother to actually teach it to me. Only nice things i can say is she responds quickly and always available.
One of the best instructors I ever had (I just graduated). She always makes herself available (constant office hours), always provides feedback, and takes the time to help you 1-on-1. Her course is demanding, but you WILL learn if you put in the effort, or you will fail, as is proper for university courses. UNM is extremely fortunate to have her.
I took this class online, which made attending virtual lectures difficult. I noticed a lot of people don't like her (and I can see why) but I think as long as you communicate with her you'll be fine. There are a lot of assignments/tests, but she does offer good feedback on assignments!
Where to begin with Karen, she is incredibly rude with her responses and drops students on a dime simply due to the faulty hw system that she uses. She does not give any chance for explanation or cooperation, and due to her tenure, would rather sit and do nothing to help than to be a decent teacher. She should never be allowed to teach again.
she doesn't care about her students,
Trust the reviews when you read them you dont want to take this class with Karen. One of the simplest math courses you could take but I feel as if she makes it her goal for you to not pass. She will not admit if shes wrong even if you are affected by it. Terrible!!!
By far the worst professor I have ever had!!! And I've had many!! She gives entirely too much work. I took 4 online classes this semester and had more work in her one class than in my other 3 classes combined. She is very rude. I had a question about an assignment and she said this was the easiest assignment of the semester. She is so rude!!!!!!!!
My favorite math teacher in the entirety of UNM. Phenomenal, inspirational, and always ready to help.
It was so hard to learn calculus with this professor. She gave an insane amount of homework so I was just worried about getting it done, not learning it. I would say about 40 tb problems, and another 30 via mymathlab every week. She also grades tests based on notation as well so if you use an arrow instead of an equal sign shell mark it wrong.
Professor Champine is one of those teachers you can not fake it with. Her classes are tough and most of your grade comes down to the test. She is one of the best lecturer speakers I have had at UNM and is always prepared for class. Her grading is prompt and she will explain and back up everything. She is extremely fare, but very tough.
just don't
It truly is hard to find any redeeming qualities about Karen and this class. She is an awful communicator. I emailed 7 times throughout the semester and never once received a response. She took ages to grade things all semester which hurts your grade when her instructions are a massive word salad mess of gibberish. She is not willing to help at all
Awful. Don't even think about it.
Karen is very sweet but as a professor, do NOT take her for a first year Calculus. She is the math coordinator teaching from Calc 1 - 5. She was unable to explain simple concepts. The only people who were successful in this class were people who had taken AP Calc in high school or the ones that are retaking after having failed this class already.
This professor is easily one of the worst I've had, even if you show your work on some of the documents she will doc you if you submit pictures because you show work better on paper. She does not teach this class, she gives you assignments and a book and expects you to teach your self. Her office hours are bad and she won't meet with you one on one!
She is very tough professor. She does heavy grading and doesn't care about students grade.
STAY CLEAR OF CHAMPINE!!! Undoubtably the worst teacher ive ever had during my time at unm. Dont get me wrong shes a nice lady but she a horrible teacher. She doesnt actually teach anything during class time. she expects you to learn basically the entire course out of the awful text book.
Would I go to her for life advice, yes, I would. Would I go back to her to ever take a math class again, NOOOOO. Sweetest soul I've ever met. Worst teacher I've ever met. Just save yourself from withdrawing and pick another teacher or better, do your math classes online or through CNM. Half the class ended up withdrawing or failing so just don't.
Nice lady awful teaching style. Does examples on the board and doesn't show or explain steps well. Her reasoning being so that it "encourages students to ask questions on how and why she arrived to where she did"(?), also, she LOVES word/tricky problems, and trig functions on exams, do NOT expect study guide to match the exams whatsoever.
Karen is a well-organized professor, but lacks the overall ability to help students understand things in class. The class is very heavily graded by tests. You are required to basically teach yourself through the textbook, and homework will become overwhelming. Many in my class are failing or lost, and if you want to do good on tests, please avoid.
idk why she has a bad rating. She cares about her students and is always happy to answer questions. She is a tough grader but for good reason. Go to class and treat her with respect and all will be good.
She's very kind and truly cares about her students. The course was difficult, but thanks to her help, it became much easier to understand. Just make sure to practice on your own time! She also notices the effort and hard work you put into the class.
I would definitely recommend taking this class with a different instructor if you care about your grades. She is a very tough grader. Her suggested problems not similar to her exams, nor the context of her lectures. She loves tricky problems. This class will blindside you every exam unless you retaken with her. Half of the class dropped as well.
Dr. Champine was really understanding about my issues during the school year and at the end. However, I didn't pass because she wouldn't up my grade to a C despite having a fairly high D. Had to retake Calc I the next semester. Wasn't too happy about it. But, outside of math? Absolutely lovely woman.
She is really great at answering questions and is super kind in giving feedback. She moves through content way too quickly. She makes her weekly quizzes too long and tricky and grades them super hard.
If you want to kill class time to avoid learning, ask her about anything and she will yap. Lectures were mostly example problems and you mostly had to learn from textbook. Homework was fine, exams were difficult. She is very nice and funny but I would not want to take advanced math classes with her.
She says she cares about us passing but only blames us when more than half the class is failing. Half the class dropped and those who stayed failed, but she doesn't change her teaching to help us. She doesn't post the exam key/doesn't go over what the answers should be in class. Seems like she really doesnt want us to pass. Don't take it with her!
Prof. Champine would start practically every class by berating students for not doing well. I wanted to skip classes after tests were handed back because the entire class period would be spent by her shaming us. I found this counter-intuitive to learning, as it wasted instruction time and caused me to avoid office hours.
All the negative reviews are true. She blames us when the whole class does bad and doesn't try to help us to do better. She makes you feel bad as an academic student because only our grade in this class defines us. She made me feel bad about myself academically when I would try to get help. Whole class fails BECAUSE OF HER, not us. Avoid her class!
