She's a wonderful, fun teacher.
She is a great teacher and a cool person! Helpful, friendly, fair. Class is fun and not too hard.
She is an awesome teacher and very helpful. I would definitely recommend taking her class.
I hated this class. It was very boring, as were Mrs. Chow's lectures.
there's a lot of tedious work.. like weekly online postings. you have to participate in class and read things. but;s it english and she tries to help everyone out, just ask her.
She is not a very good teacher. You don't learn anything from her class. You only do class discussion and group work not fun at all.
She gives too many reading assignments. Does not provide a lot of insight in analyzing the story. She gives extra credits, which is the only thing I liked. If you are not a good reader who can read 6 novels and a couple of essays, skip her elit class.
she does require a lot of work but she's very fair and if you have any problems she totally helps out n stuff..also, the extra credit is very helpful...
I love Karen so much as she is a very helpful and nice instructor. I learn so much from her class!! !
Karen, is a very pleasant person and she is very willing to help with papers. I would give her and excellent rating
Overrated teacher.Won some teacher award but I know teachers better than her deserve the award. She is also very boring. zzzzzzzz....
She is friendly & LOVES having class discussions on the readings. She grades a bit hard on essays, but if the grade is low you can rewrite it. Gives EC. One group presentation is needed. The theme makes essay writing easy b/c you know what she wants.
people may not like her teaching style, but nonetheless she's a great person to have teaching you. really energetic, completely cares about the learning, connects awesomely with students on a conversational level. i wouldn't mind taking more classes w/ he
Her class is all group work, and she gives a lot of essays. I didnt really like her or the class much.
She was a great teacher. The class was awesome cause it was based on food and writing so we ate in class all the time! There were times when directions and grading weren't clear. Class is all group work.

All you need to do to get an A in this class: pay attention to the lectures. Some hw, a midterm and a final. If you paid attention in lecture, these assignments shouldn't be hard at all :D
Really good teacher. If you are having trouble she will totally help you. The grade you get isn't easy though, you do need to do the work.
She's nice teacher. She grades fairly, and she also points out in details your faults. However, she's not well-control the class. It makes student feel boring sometimes. Anyway, she's overal good English teacher. Take her class.
Her Class discussions are very unorganized and jump all over the place. The class discussions also do not prepare you in order to write the paper. Her paper topics are vague and abstract and not clear to form a paper upon.
i had a hard time in this class. there was so much tedious work to do. she's a really nice teacher and really passionate about the subject. i had to drop it because i could handle the work load.
the class is actually fun (boring sometimes though). A lot of reading, but she grades easy.
Best teacher in the English department...very patient and works with all of her students! If you pay attention in class, read the book, and write the essays, you will recieve a good grade.
Miss Chow is honestly really nice. She never gets mad, and she helps when you ask. You can email her, and she'd reply back in 24 hrs. SHe is a kind lady and love to talk to her students. SHe likes Hello Kitty. :) hehe
I really liked Ms. Chow. She's a very sweet lady and never gets mad..much. Class seemed boring at times but shes just so nice. My fav eng class of all.
This was my first English class at De Anza, and I was definitely impressed! She requires participation, but you can speak your mind! She varies her classes, and is very interested in what her students have to say. VERY RECOMMENDED!
This class was wonderful! We had a lot of reading to do, but discussed it nearly every class. She is flexible and often pushed back due dates if we had too much going on. There are about 3 essays, a midterm and final which were short essay and short answer. Reccomended for a GE requirement.
This teacher was really cool, very easy class assignments, and she liked to put people in groups. She put up with a lot of crap from students and still gave them good grades. She is pretty easy gonig on assignments, and lets you rewrite any assignemnt for a better grade. Over all rating A+!
she is such a wonderful teacher. the best one ive had. her assignments are easy to comprehend and although there are a only 4 essays to do (no inclass) they really make you reflect on the important part of life. not no bs essay. she gives e.c. and has a nice vibe. i will take her for 1B and 1C as well. also she has a very open mind.
She is a nice teacher, but she's not that easy
Highly recommand KAREN!!! She is probably the nicest instructor at DeAnza! She grades fairly you can get A easily, especially with the LinC class with HUMI 1. The class was great since Karen allowed the whole class to get involved! EASY A class!
She is a really good teacher. Her classes are well-organized and fun!! Also, her class is very easy. You gotta take her!!!
she is the BEST english teacher that I have ever had! She is the BEST teacher at De Anza!!!She teaches more than just english! her class is so much fun!! if you really want to learn something, take her class!!!!!!!
I did not like her class. She did not keep my intrest at all. She also did a lot of group work and presentations. If you enjoy those things this class is for you otherwise stay away. Her grading seemed fair and she always knew what she was talking about.
Compassionate, encouraging, helpful, informative. Grades easily. some group work. Class participation required. Not for the soft spoken :she has a hearing aid u need to speak loudly. Overall: awesome!
She's a very understanding and caring teacher. Her class is not just reading and writing, there is a lot of group work and disscussions that help with the writing assignments. This is my third go around in English and I finally found teacher I like.
easy class. lays everything out. i got an A with little work and learned so much and I am a 3.0 student
this **** is the ****in bomb...shes got a phd in eng from ucsb so she knows wtf shes talkin about...shes hella easy...i write C quality essays and still get A's on them. dont get me wrong, we doooo learn in her class, but at the same time, shes so ****in easy!!! im sooo glad shes teaching EWRT 2 in the spring cuz im so ****in takin her again
Ms.chow is an awsome teacher!!! she knows what she is teaching and is very clear in her lectures. She's a extremely nice person and will work with the student to ensure that they get a good grade. Tests were very stright forward, and she always goes over the essays thoroughly. She tries to make the class fun and is easy to talk to. I love ms Chow!!
Very,very nice teacher.Helpful teaching.Grade easily.Strongly recommend her
Ms. Chow is a great teacher. She is caring and very helpful. I recommend her.

Great Teacher. everything was explianed very clear. class is easy but you do need to keep up with homework and she offers hellza easy Extra Credit. Essays are somewhat interesting and grades very very fair.
She is a very nice teacher, very friendly and helpful. A lot of group work and discussion. 4 essays and one presentation. You can revise twice. I highly recomment her
She was a great teacher. She's very open and friendly don't be afraid of speaking up in her class. Just finish all of the reading and you'll do fine.
I LOVE MS.CHOW!!! She is the best.
Nice teacher. There's a lot of reading, but if you do them you'll be fine. Essays are fairly easy grading. I recommend this class.
She's an awesome teacher. She is very nice and very heplful. As long as you do all the HWS and essays you'll be fine. I really recommend this teacher.
there is a lot of work to do in the class. take if you aren't taking many other classes because there is SOOOOOOOO much work load. pretty hard grader too. not an easy A. if you do all the work you can get a B.
she's pretty strict. take this class if you're an excellent writer because she grades pretty harsh. class is long and boring...lots and lots of reading assignments too. not recommended
karen is really nice and approachable...her assignments and papers are fairly easy...but her lessons can be boring sometimes...overall a great class, i enjoyed going to conferences in class times and learnt a lot from the speakers
She is the best teacher at De Anza. She's the greatest, very helpful and she is clear i what she wants you to do in class. People who say that there is too much reading, obviously there is a lot of reading ITS AN ENGLISH CLASS! Take her you won't regret it.
Very intelligent, organized, nice, enthusiastic teacher. Karen Chow is one of the best english teachers. She makes her sometimes challanging class, easy. Makes one want to learn and improve, because she's enthusiastic and always willing to help - before class, during class, after class. In EWRT 100B we had lots of discussions that really helped
she lets her studetns take over the class, its fun when theres lots of heated debates going on. But...she's a bit of a push over. she's nice. nice teacher. And i think she really cares about all her students. lot of work though, and reading. And one group project. and research paper.
Karen is a really nice person, but I felt this class was way too easy. Often times the discussion really deviated from the novel to the point that it was about people's own political/social opinions instead of the text. The workload and grading were lenient, but if you're an English major and/or want to learn, I would look somewhere else.
honestly, i didn't feel comfortable in her class, cuz all she talks about is racism. i thought it was supposed to be an English class in which we can develop our writing skills. inter-cultural study or sociology would be a better description of her class than english.
Karen is an extremely nice person, she will help you whenever you need it. lots of reading though but you will get lots of ideas about life and what to write about in her class. Not an easy A class, but she is a fair grader. you will get what you deserve. Recommended teacher for Writing.
She is very friendly and helpful. The class did have a lot to do with racism and social problems, but it was Critical Thinking, Writing, etc. I guess it's her area of interest, but the class was strait forward, fun, and had plenty of opportunities to do well. Highly recommended for those who have an interest in social and cultural diversity.
Karen Chow is really nice and easy to talk to. shes a great teacher and she kept her class interesting. She didn't grade too hard; participation is kinda important though. This class was fun, you get to read some cool books and have a lot of class discussions and even do some creative writing.
Super nice. The quizzes are easy. Just show up to class b/c she goes over everything prior to the quiz. She is funny and cute. I didn't find anything hard in her class. The journal writings can be annoying, but it's easy. She has a good heart. Always willing to help you.
Karen is an awesome teacher. She is the sweetest person ever. I went to Italy to study abroad and she was one of my teachers. Needless to say, I have nothing but nice things to say about her, She is straight forward teacher and is very helpful.
I took her both for 1A and 1B and she is awesome! She's very helpful and classes are fun! She is super easy. I did the required essays but didn't do any HW all quarter. I still walked out with an A. Do your work and it's a guaranteed A.
I took women in literature. Although she is a nice person... this class was compltly obnoxious evrybook we read focused havily on racism and thats what all are discussions were about. ENOUGH ALREADY. the discussions always focused on racism in our lives, over and over again.. it was highly annoying the class was mis labled. Stupid!
Dr. Chow is a very nice person, and she grading is very fair. You will enjoy so much in her class! I was taking her class in summer, where she even arranged two outings to help us understand the read life situation of the people behind the literature. A lot of fun activities through the quarter, cannot find a reason to dislike her class!
Queen Karen Chow is the most wonderful being in DeAnzaCollege. She brings out excellent components to the table such as, clarity, insightfulness and, enthusiasm. Nobody ever falls asleep during her classes because she makes sure that the entire class is attentive. How she does it? IDK. But what I do know is, she has her own unique style of teaching
I did not like her class at first because it was part of this LEAD program, which I didn't find out until the quarter was about to begin. However, her class got better because I enjoyed the class discussions and the essays were pretty easy. I recommend anyone to take her EWRT 211 or 1a. Grading isn't too difficult and she's very helpful.
For EWRT 211 she is a good teacher however I took EWRT 1A this quarter and she gives WAYYYYYYY too much work. She expects you to read 100 in only a few days with a few other assignments on top of that. Additionally you have to complete 4 page essays within a week pretty often. I highly recommend you take EWRT 1A with a different teacher
Karen is honestly one of the most caring teachers I ever had. The quarter is almost over and my writing has improved a lot. She really cares about you. If you want to learn how to become a better writer take her! She might ask of a lot from you but this is college people. Do your work ask question you'll get an A.
Great teacher, I really enjoyed her class. Very informative formation. She has a big heat and really loves whats she does. Take her class you'll enjoy it.
Want to learn to improve your writing? Don't take Professor Chow. She lectures a lot and has you draw pictures, but doesn't give any help with writing. Just sayin.
I had 1a in the fall with Karen and another teacher for a link class. I honestly loved the class and I am glad i had Karen. As a teacher Karen is very fair and she actually cares so much about each of the students, and this is a characteristic that is seldom seen nowadays. She is lenient but you have to demonstrate willing you are to learn.
Karen tries to inspire her students & have them get involved her topic & w their "familias" (group she assigns you to for the quarter). LOTS of reading. Essays are doable. Her class is a LEAD class and gives you a lot of busy work, but it's easy. Participation matters. No tests quizzes. Overall, average class. Easy A? Eh, it's possible.
She has this really annoying "familia" structure... She seems nervous when speaking, but she knows what she's talking about. It appears she's really involved and loves what she does but I feel like she's a better fit for high school...
She's a cool teacher! Easy grader and work load is doable
It is SO important to have a teacher like Karen on your side. Not only she is incredibly sweet and understanding, she really fights for her students and their personalacademic needs. The only way students don't pass is if they just disappear or not turn in assignments but expect a good grade. Lenient as long as you COMMUNICATE!
Karen is amazing. She is so smart, engaging, and invokes discussions in class that are relevant and interesting. She breaks the class into "familias" and those are great because you really get to know your group by the end of the quarter. She's overall an amazing professor and I'd love to take all the courses she teaches!
She's a really cool teacher and helps out when writing essays.
Took her EWRT1A in conjunction with ICS21 with Tony Santa Anna. She's very friendly and treats you with the utmost care. She will spend time to talk with you about whatever you need and gives a lot of effort to help. Expect lots of writing and reading, but she reminds me very much of a high school teacher. Don't be afraid to talk with her!!
The class didn't have a clear focus, tried to cover way more than just women in lit. Super boring, missed a lot of classes and couldn't even tell. No quizzes or tests, and the class feels super easy, but the midterm was actually graded pretty harshly. She is crazy lenient and you basically don't have to do anything. Easy A but boring. She's nice.
I like Proffesor Chow, she cares about her students and wants them all to do good. But I hate the way she runs the class and grades. You are forced to talk to your familias which makes it awkward if your the anti social type. The class gets off topic a lot and it's hard for students to really participate because of it. Readings are also very long.
I had Professor Chow for Honors EWRT 1A. Throughout the quarter we had 3 essays , weekly HW was fairly simple, and the hardest part was submitting it on time bc of how lenient she was with due dates.I personally found her to be a bit disorganized. Expect a LOT of off topic class discussions. Overall easy grader, all you need to do is try.
There is nothing new I learned in this class. I wish she focused more on writing techniques rather than politics in class. She misused time during final presentation and half of the students did not get a chance to present in time during the exam time slot. I don't understand why she's teaching in honor's class.
Unorganized schedule and often random mandatory on-campus events ( some are interesting). Weekly forum posts and a few essays in the quarter. Easy grader and lenient on due dates. Emphasizes a lot of group work with "familias." In-class discussion tends to be very off-topic. Overall, nice and caring professor.
Professor Karen Chow was amazing this quarter! I ended the year with an A- but Im okay with that. Theres about 3-4 essays? All really easy. Everything was based on modern day events, including our discussions on canvas. Homework was usually just a discussion question or an essay. Super easy and her class discussions are interesting. TAKE HER!
Pretty good teacher, very nice&caring. Easy A. Attendance 'mandatory,' aka it just depends on if you have in-class work to turn in or not, otherwise she doesn't mark down if you are there/not. Mostly just group work/discussions, don't really learn how to improve writing skills. Also, you don't actually have to buy the book, little work with it.
An extremely nice teacher, really cares for students. If you are already a strong writer, this class is a little... too easy. But if you don't mind going through Ethos Pathos and Logos again it is a good class. She also keeps students informed for on campus events and stuff, so if you are new to De Anza I would definitely recommend taking her class
Dr. Chow conducts her class as space for students to voice their opinions and focus on the world issues that matter to us first, and an English class second. She cares deeply about you and wants to make you better. Pay close attention to prompts and participate actively. If you want to be engaged and improve as a writer and activist, take her!
Not at all a hard class I'd say, but certainly geared toward kids fresh outta high school (took issue with students leaving early). Felt like too little material and too much time, so a poor handle on managing the time and course content. Fulfilled the requirements, did not enjoy.
Within any EWRT 1A class that you will take in college, there's always going to be writing involved that includes insertings that the professor requests. However, the books that Professor Chow includes are fun to read. She's also very caring and supportive. As 2020 is already hectic, Professor Chow gave us relatable topics that are great to talk ab
She's awesome
Professor Chow goes at an accelerated speed, reading a 300 page book in a few weeks was difficult for many students in my class, many ended up just skimming through the book, and the essays get increasingly difficult each time, having to incorporate more quotes from books you're currently reading or have read previously
She's very sweet, and caring and she prepares you for essays in the best way in my opinion, body paragraphs, intro and conclusion, and then another 2 body paragraphs and then the final draft. She also shows that she wants to be there for the students and how she loves her job and cares for them. Literally the carry of my quarter, favorite teacher!
Professor Chow's teaching method is to make you do discussions that are actually essays, she makes you respond to multiple videos at once, making you take quotes from all the videos that are mentioned in the discussion, a lot of the time more than three videos, doing so takes away time that you could be using for other classes and assignments
Really nice and understanding professor. Lots of work, but very easy and manageable if you are proactive and manage your time well. Not a free class at all, but the content and work itself are not difficult.
Ms. Chow is the ideal English Professor one can ask for in college. Her lectures are engaging and group work model is followed in her class. Just 4 essays with ample time to brainstorm (also gives chance to rewrite and regrades if requested). Can be a bit late in grading assignments but always available outside class to talk!
Professor Chow's EWR1A class is challenging but rewarding. The reading load is heavy, and the essays get progressively more difficult. However, she is very helpful and approachable. unstuck AI was a lifesaver for staying on top of the workload. Overall, a great class with an engaged professor.
