Very very good teacher...really enjoy her style of teaching: very witty yet thought-provoking. I would highly reccomend her for any English or Women's Studies class.

amazing prof. enlightening. interesting material. glad to say she was my introduction into women studies. i will continue because of this experience.

She was a little bit scary at first, but after the first few classes I began to enjoy going. She makes class fun by allowing a lot of discussions and that is GREAT! Could use less "public space"

Karen is a great teacher, especially when teamed up with Susan Briggs. She is absolutely hilarious too, had me laughing the whole semester.

was worried that she would be a very hard teacher-turned out that i really enjoyed the class and had a wicked time- shes funny and overall a very good teacher!

scared at first, thought she was an essay butcherer. well, she does butcher essays, but if you do well and work on your essay it'll get a good mark. i hate public space now! ahah but the course was super helpful

A good teacher, but very very hard marker, with way way to much work, this class killed me. Plus public space is not very intresting after a full term, needs new topic. Take her only if you are a good writer and can do lots and lots of work for her class

Great teacher! Tells it how it is. Is a hard marker but it will only serve to improve your writing for future post secondary courses.

THANK GOD ITS OVER!!! she's a great prof but this class was hard and KILLED my gpa......she butchers your essays and its tons of work.

I was a**** academic writer before I had taken her class and I have received A's and B's on all my essays after "labouring" through her eng 130. If you want to get an easy 3 credits in eng look elsewhere, but if you actually want to improve your writing skills take this class! A.J.

Yeah she's brtal marking the essays, but I'm glad she is. The course material though is painfully boring. She's a good instructor, good feedback, but I'd recommend 130 by another instructor if you want to keep an inkling of interest going.(briggs does the same material, so not her)

Good prof hard marker, but hey, it's academic writing.Topic is Urban Livability, which i hated..but it offers a variety of topic areas to write about. If you care about your gpa, then i would suggest you reconsider your choice of prof to another one. (not briggs, mcCausland or nicholsfigueredo neither..same material)

Tuition well spent, very helpful, great feedback on papers (good comments too), makes class fun, encourages class participation.

LETS MAKE SOMETHING CLEAR. ENG 112 is RAPE!!! so prof doesnt matter. they are all hard. Cowan isn't that bad of a marker. she is tuff but fair and easier then briggs. Class was boring as hell but if your taking this course, i'm guessing its not an elective haha a "C" in this course is GOOD!

lots of discussion. not an academically difficult class but it does require you to use your head and be introspective and open minded. just think about stuff and it goes well

She's fun and interesting to listen to. She's pretty helpful and nice so don't be scared to ask for help! She's a tough marker so watch out!

She's is a nice person but an extremely unfair marker. If you want to take someone who grades a little easier take Jasmine nicholsfigerdo (she's kind of annoying though).

Karen is amazing. She is a realistic marker. If you actually do the work, rather then waiting till an hour before it is due you will get a good grade. Funny and down to earth. I recomend her. You will learn a lot in if you pay attention and show up. Theme is built enviroment for the essays and class assignments. She does 1 field trip in vancouver.

The class isn't difficult and the discussions were generally interesting however mandatory journal entries of 3 times per week became excessive. There was also a lot of reading.

Crazy and funny scotswoman. Work hard, be creative and follow the guidelines set before you and you will do fine.

interesting lectures...she's a good teacher..hard marker but if you go for help and fix what she tells you to fix you'll have no problem!

Fantastic teacher. Knows what she's talking about, makes the topics interesting, and really engages the class in discussions. Also doesn't take BS.

LOVE HER. Very hard marker, but it's so worth it. LOTS of class discussion, so you really get to know the people. By the end of semester it felt like a family. All thanks to Karen's encouraging us to find our voices!

Karen is a fantastic professor. "So what?" She really cares about her students. She is a hard marker but you will learn how to write an excellent essay.

Great Teacher, she will make you work In turn you gain useful knowledge. Attend class for your own sake. If you have questions, ask them early on so your not lost near the end. She will keep you entertained, but classes are still boring sometimes.

Lot's of reading and writing on Urban Liveability, which is not a topic I find very interesting. But she's quite entertaining and somehow made it work! She is a hard marker so listen to what she has to say, put lot's of effort into your essays, and you will do well. Provides great comments for improvement. Really helped me to write better essays =)

I learnt so much in her class! Karen is a great teacher and seems to really care about her students. Her expectations are high but she is VERY clear about what she wants. It's time consuming, but follow her instructions and you'll do great!

Karen is awesome! This class isn't easy but she is very engaging and fun, and your writing will improve a lot which is very beneficial to future courses! Strongly recommend.

She's fantastic! I really enjoyed her class. Lots and LOTS of discussion in class, and plenty of reading to do. Expectations are clear, and only a few projects. I'd take her class again in a heartbeat.

I took Both womens studies and ENG1130 with Karen. She is my favorite prof at douglas so far and I feel like I have been there foreverrr. I did really well in both classes because a)i'm not an idiot and b)i do my work. Her eng class improved my essays in every other class. her ws class was fun! highly recommended.

I've had classes with her before. Everyone says this class is awful, but I've managed Bs with reading the text and making sure to edit my work. If you pay attention and do EXACTLY as she says, you'll be fine. She's clear, helpful, and funny. But she doesn't mince her words! She'll straight up tell you what she thinks.

Karen was a really nice teacher, the class definitely took some hard work but overall she was really understanding and I managed to get out of there with a B, I would take a class with her again.

This prof is amazing.Her feedback on essays are great, and she is the reason I am a better writer.I would reccommend this prof to anyone who wants to improve their writing skills but if you are looking for an easy A, this is not the course for you. I barely tried and i got a C+, so i guess she isn't that hard of a marker,but she isn't easy either.

Karen is awesome! despite the class being quite difficult (college avg is a C) she is the MOST knowledgable Eng prof ive ever known. rly enjoyed coming to class as she makes lectures engaging and is crystal clear on her expectations. She is very approachable & also quite hilarious. I am definitely learning how to write a proper essay thanks to her.

Karen is the best! Incredible feedback when you write essays, and her clarity of what she wants is always on point. She's upfront, and harsh at times but hilarious. She inspired me in women studies, and helped me through Academic Writing. She wants her students to do well, and expects you to try your best.

Great teacher, gives the best feedback I've seen. Fun during class, engaging, and makes it crystal clear what she wants. The topic for my 1130 class was about the city and public space, and the assignments were the most boring, mind-numbing assignments I've ever had to do. Good teacher, wouldn't recommend the course.

She's one of my favourites. I absolutely HATE english but I really enjoyed her class. She forces you to become a good writer and I really appreciated that because I needed to know how to properly write papers. She's also hilarious.

Karen Cowan is an awesome professor!. I came to her class and I could not write proper essays. Karen is there to help students become a better writer. She cares about her students and wants them to succeed and I see that in her teaching. When she gives us our essay back she is honest and gives good feed back on how you can improve.

I took Karen in my first semester and 2 years later I still remember all of the tips that she drilled into my head for writing academic papers. If you really need to learn how to write papers, take the course with Karen because she couldn't have been a better teacher.

LISTEN HERE because English is one of my least favourite subjects and undoubtedly my worst. BUT, taking this class with Karen will be one of the best decisions you will ever make. She is extremely captivating and entertaining in class and every tip that she provides is incredibly useful. I always look forward to taking her class!

Karen is an amazing teacher! I admit that after my first class, I was terrified, as she seemed intense. But on the contrary, she is caring and the class discussions were fun and informative. She grades fairly and you will receive plenty of feedback. I enjoyed this class and learned a lot.

Karen is a great professor. She made academic writing an interesting and lively class. Her class is tough, she will make you work for your mark but you will become a better, stronger writer for it. For whatever amount of time you put into your work, she will put in just as much to respond to it; her feedback is detailed and amazing.

Tough grader and lots of reading, but gives you genuinely useful feedback and advice for writing essays/papers. Definitely the best professor I've come across so far, highly recommend. I still use techniques I learned from her class in every paper I write.

Karen is a great prof, even though this is a very tough class and be prepared to do a lot of reading and homework, she makes it a little more enjoyable. she is a tough marker and the subject is revolved around public spaces which can be very boring but not horrible. great experience with her, she is very willing to help if you show that you care.

As others have stated, Miss Cowan is an AMAZING prof who CARES about her students, but DO NOT take her class if you don't care about becoming a better writer.

Lots of course readings but they are easy reads for the most part. Great feedback.
