I would bring a pillow if I wasnt so afraid she would smother me with it
The Devil!
I wonder why she teaches when she hates students so much!
Don't be late she'll cut your legs off...doesn't care about US history and it shows in her teaching. She is the wicked step sister everyone fears!!
very mean in class, i found her to be extremely hard and not caring at all, this was the worst class that i have ever taken in history in my four years
DO NOT take this teacher unless you absolutely have to. She is mean, rude and a horrible teacher. She seems to be mad at the world and she definitely hates students. THE WORST teacher I've ever had. If you're even 1 minute late to class, she blesses you o
She is not very clear on how she wants you to write your papers. Don't take her unless you absolutely have to. She can be very mean and sarcastic.
This has to be the most unqualified professor on campus. US History somehow became Civil Rights History. She spent a combined 20 minutes discussing WWII and Vietnam, and a combined 5 months talking about civil rights. Absolutely atrocious!
nothing to say but that she sucks
Course focused almost exclusively on the role of women. Very little attention given to other aspects.
absolute joke of a class- thought southern history was about more than just blacks and desegregation - shes a possible **** - only advice i have is DON'T TAKE THAT WOMAN'S CLASS!!seriously, drop hist before you take her...EVER - is NOT fair to students

Nothing special, pretty dull class.
Interesting class. Enjoyed field trips. I liked her!
She needs a more balanced view of American history.
She is absolutely crazy. She kicked us out of class today, b/c alot of us hadn't read half of the book yet. I don't have problems with prof, but she's impossible... mean, rude, one-sided, and all about herself. Don't take her class!
Will get angry if you don't read on time, no excuses. She is tough but she will bring your writing skills up to college expectations. Only thing that sucks is she will kiss a good writer's butt in front of the entire class, and it's always some english BA
Look the only thing I can tell you is...Don't take her class. There is something wrong when the secretary in the History Dept. says something negitave about her to me. DON"T TAKE HER CLASS
This professor thinks it's all about HER and it's NOT! DON"T TAKE HER CLASS! She makes you buy her book which is boring. She is never prepared for class and she grades unfairly. She has this attitude that is unreal. Run, don't walk away from this professor!
the class was pointless and she has a bad attitude. oh yeah, her book is AWFUL.
Slit wrists before taking.Change your major before taking. This professor is so bad I'm amazed they still let her teach. she can't answer basic history questions in the era she is teaching!!!! Avoid at all costs!
Under no circumstances should you take this woman's class. She is one of the meanest, most negative teahers I have ever had. If you are one minute late or don't know an answer to a question, she will kick you out. She's obviously miserable in her own life and takes it out on unsuspecting students.
Very fun class. Plus you get to go on 2 field trips during the semester. Lots of projects and a couple papers, but otherwise an easy class. Definitely one you should take :)

She will help you if you ask. She took a lot of time going over my paper with me.
Worst teacher I have ever had! Ever! She could care less about you or the class. Avoid at all costs! AWFUL!
A great teacher. She really DOES care about students.
Someone I know and trust took this woman's class and knows others who did. She said everyone who posts that Cox is a bad teacher is correct & that she is only nice to grad students. I met this teacher socially and she is kind of weird.
Dr. Cox is tough, but if you want to learn, she is there for you, and more than willing to go out of her way to help you. This is one of the few classes where I can say I actually learned something, academically, and for life.
I took her southern women's history class and the only women we read about were snobbish plantation mistresses, and slave women. What about the women that comprised the main percentage of the south's population. Poor women both black and white.

I felt like I was back in high school again the way she treats her students. Was flat out rude to most and made negative comments about the class under her breath. It was supposed to be a history in the 19th century class but all we studied was slavery and women. Fair grader but not worth it, I don't recommend the class.
AWESOME professor! If you're an idiot that likes to text and come in late, don't take her. Otherwise, you deserved to get called out. I learned a lot, and the topics were relevant and interesting. I would take it over again in a second.
If essay exams are your type of thing then I would recommend this class. The final and midterm are cumulative which is difficult because she doesn't make many things clear. She does everything in class and her notes are not very clear or precise. She puts people on the spot and mostly just says negative things to them in the front of the class
Her class wasnt that hard but she does pick people out and says mean comments about them. DO NOT show up to class late or turn your work in late! She will pick you out even more!
I liked this class. It wasn't one of those filler classes either. If you don't expect to work and turn in your assingments on time, then don't take her class. If you plan on showing up late, be prepared to get called out. She is rather funny and entertaining if you aren't the slacker type!
all she wants to talk about is sex and women's rights. so boring. every class comes back to both. cancels class a lot, so that's ok. SERIOUSLY a rude lady. will snatch up your paper you're finishing up before you can even put your name on it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
She is fantastic. She demands and deserves respect, she only calls you out or treats you badly if you make excuses which are clearly lies or are excessively late. She is passionate about her interests and will go out of her way to help you if you show that you are interested and putting effort into her course. Slackers need not apply.
Dr. Cox was absolutely terrible. She was more concerned about writing her book than teaching the class. Teaching is just a steady income. She was very one sided too and saw everything as a white/black issue. Definitely wasn't open to other thoughts. Don't try to contribute to her class. She'll feel threatened by you!!!
She's one of the reasons I would not go on to grad school for history. Not because I'm a slacker -- because I won't put up with any disrespect from her. I know too many GOOD students who say she's biased & rude.
This woman is very smart, no doubt. However, she has a terrible attitude. You just feel miserable being around her. She really hates life and seems to hate her students even more. Stay away from her, and the UNCC history department, for that matter.
This prof is very knowledgeable about the course topics, and gives interesting lectures, but her tests are INCREDIBLY difficult. If you sign up for this course, make sure that you are ready to actually read the lit and come to class every day because sometimes instead of calling roll she will give quizzes on the reading or lecture for a grade.
I don't know why Dr. Cox gets such a bad rap on this site. I found her to be a wonderful prof and I enjoyed her class! I even made sure to mention this to her when I finished the final! She's not going to coddle us, we're adults and she doesn't need to. She knows her stuff and is passionate about it! I'm looking forward to taking her again!
This professor is not clear on her expectations from students. Her syllabus can be changed by her at any moment. I found her to be one of the toughest graders in the whole history department. I would think twice before taking a class with her again.
She's not a bad teacher AT ALL. I barely read any of the books, and got an A. She seems pretty strict or mean, but she's actually really funny and chill and even asks for music requests while taking quiz's(Bob Marley was my fav.) Take her, it's easy...
She doesn't take any bull and is a classic professor! You will grow as a student to take her class. Her quizzes and tests are tough, but she gives you clues as to how to answer the questions in the beginning of the semester, and practically tells you what's going to be on the exams. Do read the required texts. She's fantastic and spirited!
Okay. First off let me say she knows her stuff and can teach. She has a horrible attitude and gets snappy for no reason. She attends to be extra when there is no need to be
Very rude, and not helpful in the slightest. I was very excited for the class, but she disappointed me. The class was not hard, but she made it very difficult to be there. At one point, she snapped at and ridiculed a boy in front of the enitre class. Stay away from her.
Dr. Cox is a great professor. She knows all about what she is teaching. I found the class to be very difficult and challenging, but if go to her with questions during an appointment or during office hours she will help you out. MAKE SURE YOU READ THE BOOKS! There are 5 quizzes that are 50% of your grade. Overall it is an interesting class.
At first I thought Dr. Cox was unnecessarily rude, but I grew to learn that she's more sassy than anything else. Do your work and be responsible and the two of you will get along famously. She's really a great teacher when you apply yourself.
Absolutely horrible teacher. Unbearably rude and unhelpful. Took my passion for history and stomped on it. She is a miserable teacher to be around and 100% unhelpful in every way. STAY AWAY FROM HER OR ANY OF HER CLASSES
She's rude. Has no interest in helping any male student. Insists on being treated like the president
The class is really boring not to mention there is really nothing to go by. All you have are a few quizzes, a midterm and a final. Not even a textbook or PowerPoint. Little effort is put into the class and it shows. Not very helpful in students' success. Don't take this course if you are anything less than a perfect student who just knows history.
Dr. Cox's class is fairly easy if you actually read the books assigned. Only tests in this class are the midterm and final which are easy! 5 short answer quizzes on books. Take her class for a really small work load!!!
Dr. Cox expects that students be on time and read the assigned material. She is a fairly strict grader, and her midterm and final exams are extensive. She lets class out very early almost every day, and the workload is not too bad. No papers, only reading and tests. If you can be punctual and do not mind reading a lot, it is not a bad class.
I took Dr. Cox last semester for film History of the South. She is extremely rude and very nasty to the students. If someone in the class or out of the class makes her mad forget about it, she will take it out on the whole class. I asked her to go over my midterm with during her office hrs. She tossed the book at me and said I didn't answer the?
I would not advise taking any of her classes. She grades very harshly and if you do not verbally talk in class discussion you will get a bad grade, it does not matter if you read the information or not.
While it's easy to tell that she knows what she's talking about, she doesn't make it interesting. You have five reading quizzes, a mid-term, and a final exam and those are the only things you'll be graded on. Read the material or she might make anyone who didn't leave the class. Not great at communicating with students with disabilities.
Overall a decent teacher. You will have to read 4 books and when I say read I mean every page. Quizzes were rarely broad enough to just skim through the reading. Sometimes if she sees the class is sleeping she will ask you to right down everything you learned as a quiz. Phones are extremely frowned upon. Class is very boring for the most part.
People complain about her a lot, but if you keep up with readings and be respectful you will do fine.
A lot of reviews didn't like this professor, but I found she was fine. She doesn't like people talking over her when she is talking and hates to see phones or headphones out. But she seemed nice and fair for the most part. Just stay quiet and do your work
Dr. Cox is can be very ill-mannered and snappy. No textbook but she does require some chapter books to read and she has a minimum of 5 quizzes, all short answer, which is all your grade consists of. All her tests are timed. Lectures are very short and to the point. Most of the time class is out within 45 minutes.
If you're looking for an easy A don't bother. That being said, if you'd like to get an A and actually learn something, take this class. Dr. Cox can be stern, but not unreasonable. She's very knowledgable in her field and the material is not really hard. There are 5 reading quizzes (10% each) and a midterm and Exam (25% each) If you read, you'll pass
This was my second course with Dr. Cox. She's a very good professor that expects her students to actually put in work and effort into the course. If you try and lie to her she knows it and will put you on blast in front of the classroom for it. With that being said if you don't try and make excuses to her she will gladly help you.
This is a Masters level course and Dr. Cox seems to hold contempt for most of us. She tore us apart in our first papers but allowed revisions. Revisions didn't seem to matter, though, since she gave most people the exact same grade (and some lower) despite us fixing the issues she brought up. She somehow found more problems in the revision!
Dr. Cox is a good professor but she can be a bit mean/snide at times which can be unnecessary. If you don't read then she will call you out! Participation is important and you must put in the effort if you want a good grade. She is willing to work with you if she has the time. She appreciates good writing above all else.
This class was fairly simple and easy to understand. Although, you need to show up to do well in the class. She gives test straight off what she says in class and doesn't post powerpoint's.
Dr. Cox has mixed reviews, and I was a little nervous to take her last semester, but I realized really quickly she is a great professor! All you have to do is be respectful, listen, interact occasionally, read required material & study your notes! Attendance isnt mandatory but her lectures are honestly not bad at all & her slides arent online.
She treats an online class like she would an in person class. She yells at people if they don't raise their hand. Also if you ask her when a test is she tells you to look at the syllabus and it's not there. Her lectures are fast make sure you can write fast. Doesn't give points back on the test if you got something right that was marked wrong!
Avoid if you can!!! There were a total of 4 quizzes in this class over the entire semester, which is ridiculous. PPTS arent helpful. The information you will be tested on is based off what she talks about during lecture. You basically have to write as she speaks to pass the class. Save yourself the time & energy.
I took her online class spring 2021. She didnt care for attendance but you have to attend because she doesnt post lectures nor power-points, which dont even have anything but key words so your notes consist of writing everything you hear her say. Shes rude and petty. You only get like 5 grades for the whole semester book quizs & tests.
Awful Professor, I've never had a more rude professor. Acts like she's the president of the college. She doesn't care about her students at all, treats them like trash. Her class ruins my week because of how she treats us. Asked half of the class to leave class because they didn't read the entire book. AVOID AT ALL COST!
Not many assignments but she does make you read a lot of stories and books and she likes to give you extra videos to watch before class. One thing though if you do not attend the online lectures you will fail even if attendance isn't mandatory because she doesn't post the PowerPoints or allows you to record the zoom, so it's best to pay attention.
She is very rude to students; She laughs at them if they don't know the answers to questions. She only takes 6 grades for the whole semester, with no extra credit available. And, she doesn't post the notes or let you record them, how helpful... I do not recommend this class whatsoever!!!
I'm 50/50 about her, however her test/quizzes are relatively easy. She is very snarky towards her students sometimes she laughs at them for asking questions (yes, some are dumb). She also needs to start posting PowerPoints at least, if attendance isn't mandatory. If you don't see those lectures or read what she has assigned you may end up failing.
I have never had a professor as rude, demeaning, and humiliating as this lady was. She graded as if we were established historians who had already published books. If I would have known the hell I would go through, I would never have taken her course. Avoid her class at all costs, it will save you a lot of stress.
PLEASE DONT TAKE HER!! Online class, thought would be easy, NOPE! Calls you out when camera is on, calls you out when camera is not on. you have to read many little stories AND TWO books that you have to buy. Only 4 tests, which is your whole grade. No extra credit, no syllabus and she knows its not there when students tell her... do not take
PLEASE STEER CLEARRR!!! She is confrontational in class, yells at students She gives out no syllabus?? only 5 assignments the whole sem Grades like hell, the class average was a 40!!! and just simply isn't cut out for teaching expect her to take her time will grading and those snarky little remarks PLEASE DONT TAKE IT IF YOU VALUE UR GPA
Just a terrible person in general. Its bad when a professor makes me get on here to talk ish about them bc I've never cared to do so previously. I with I had read the reviews before signing up for her class. PLEASE take my word ... you do not want her. she needs to stop teaching ASAP
DO NOT TAKE HER!!! I left the class since only 4 grades (quizzes/ exam) on readings. I tried to seek help from her, but she did not care. Also no syllabus. She yells at students on zoom who do turn their camera on for not looking like they are paying attention or always makes rude comments. Powerpoints are not posted. Do not take her for an LBST.
Avoid this professor at all costs. The class is only 4 reading quizzes and 2 exams. The quizzes are from the notes you have to write down during lecture word for word in order to do well. She moves fast and the zoom lectures aren't even posted after. She is rude and will kick you out the zoom if you login late. Honestly worst professor I've had.
Boring Unorganized Overly strict Unempathetic Can be downright mean Failed to grade assignments that SHE SPECIFICALLY requested I do Seems to hate her job and everyone around her 80% of the time Please read the rest of these reviews and don't take her - she needs to find a new calling in life because it's quite obvious she hates this one.
I was hoping to learn a lot from her, given her extensive historical background. However, every interaction I had with her just gave the feeling she loathed talking to students. When asking for clarity on some writing feedback, she would berate me about mistakes, ensuring I'll never reach out for help again. Seems to think highly of herself.
