kept the class upbeat. demos and critiques took FOREVER, standing for 2 hours is not fun. but projects were good fun overall.
Professor Davies can be a wee bit strange sometimes. Remember to work hard on the projects, and don't buy all the materials upfront like she says. Classtime was kind of boring-Critiques are slow, and brainstorm days slower. Mostly: She will help you develope your skills beyond what your expectations
keep on track and you'll pass. She's easy to talk to and willing to help. She will dish out criticism so if you can't take the heat... I came out with some of my best work.
Great 2D class. Davies may be a little eccentric, and the first project may have been dreadfully boring, but once I got past the first project, it became my favorite class. Just do your work, and make sure to grab a stool on demo and critique days so you don't end up standing for an hour or more. It also helps to stay enthusiastic!!!
Had and extreme tendency to wander off from topic, thus wasting copious amounts of class time. Often assigned busy work without a clear purpose. Did NOT stick to syllabus AT ALL. Also, was uncooperative/insensitive to disability allowances issued by college in official documentation. She's a "nice" person, but does not make clear assignments
Davies is eccentric but definitely in a good way. I'm taking her again for 3D design. The projects for 2D werent the most exciting but I learned more in her class than any other class that quarter. Demos are a but long but you get to see tons of great examples of projects which help you create yours. Overall great teacher
This woman was crazy.
ALWAYS willing to HELP!! She can talk too much sometimes, but she's still sweet and approachable. Has high expectations, but always helps you get to where you need to be. Can be a bit goofy most days, but that's why she's so much fun. I enjoyed her class and am currently enrolled in her 3D.
I learned a lot in this class, she actually seems to know about 3-D and is excited to teach this subject. Projects were fun but challenging, but she gives a lot of extra help in class and outside. She talks to everyone, so it's easy to get a good grade.
Davies is really hard. Pays ALOT of attention to detail . its a studio class but you wont do anything in class because all she does is talk. critiques take FOREVER. one time took two classes. using vocab definatly gives you brownie points. also if your project doesnt really match the criteria but is really good, youll still get a good grade on it
Horrible.
Her projects are demanding but they are also engaging and fun. The finished products of the assignments really could be portfolio pieces. She's very nice and helpful. Her teaching style is gradual and unintimidating. This class makes you want to push yourself and I think everyone is pretty amazed at what they can do at the end of the quarter.
Karen is very friendly but wastes a LOT of classtime by taking personal phone calls in the middle of class. VERY UNPROFESSIONAL. Dishonest in what she told me I'd get for a grade (an "a") and what I actually ended up with (a "b"). I do NOT suggest taking Karen Davies as a prof.
lectures: she goes on and on about useless crap homework: she gives homework for everyclass but not a lot. you can finish it in like 2 or 3 hours tests: just study for them and you'll do find. she gives you online studies to help fairness: she has favorites and others that she dislikes grading: she wants everyone to be as good as her. she is a
Okay, so, I'm horrible at drawing and 2-D design is all about craftsmanship and ideas and combining the two. Prof Davies is really strict on accurate measuring and adament about turning stuff in on time. 10 points off if you're a day late with the assignment. If you're really focused and want to work a lot and are good at drawing, take her, i guess.
If you have more time any are not going to do anything else but this class, then maybe you will not stress out about her workload. She briefly explains her assignments in very broad detail to the point if you spend a lot of time like me on a project, she probably will rejects it. FINALS...she racks up the work.good luck studying!!I learned nothing
I hated prof Davies when I first started her class. She takes whole class periods explaining how to rubber cement. SHE GRADES BY YOUR CRAFTSMANSHIP projects will take you FOREVER. took me 3 all nighters in a row for her final. She will love you, however if you work your ass off for her class. I ended up liking her and I would probably take her agai
You will work your butt off in this class. Tons of projects, study models, a research. Craftsmanship is a must, and she is looking for mostly conceptual books, not blank ones. You will learn a lot in this class about making books, but Davies has an unrealistic expectation about time and money, because it will be expensive
Prof Davies is a hell load of fun. her workload was alright. she has now adjusted some projects so it's manageable. just don't leave things till last minute. i never had to pull an all nighter with her. my only problem is that her projects are boring and her advice don't help at all. study for the tests. they are easy to score.
Though 2d turned out to be a really time consuming and expensive class, it was worth it. your work is so much better at the end of the quarter. Davies is a stickler for craftsmanship. If you put in enough time 100%'s on projects are within reach...plus her quizzes and tests are pretty easy too. you just have to be willing to put in work.
this is the most time-consuming class ever...craftsmanship is a must here.
it was clear she had favorites in the class. I felt she talked down to some of the students - not cool. the first project dragged on then the last were thrown one on top the other and the projects were VERY time consuming. 3D Design seemed interesting before i had the class, she made me hate it.
I hated this class. It was awful from start to finish. I would recomend never taking this class. NEVER!!! Davies is an awful teacher and is very ****. She also hates athletes. This was the worst class I have ever taken in my entire academic life.
I absolutely lovedddd davies!!! Her comments were harsh and the work was EXTREMELY HARD. I once pulled an all nighter and then the next day, she ripped appart my project. I went home crying. But she helped me fix it, and it is one of my favorite pieces from that class. Im proud of everything i did in her class.
One of the top ten worst teachers at SCAD. Very unclear. Instead of allowing us to do work, she rambles on about topics that are unrelated to class. Terrible.
Awful awful teacher. Had her for 3d, not only was the workload insane, but she clearly picks favorites. i did nothing to have her hate me, yet she picked on me and said stuff to me that even my friends couldn't believe she said to my face. I had to hold myself back from screaming at her. Would NOT recommend. Ever.
Many people have a lot of bad things to say, but the truth is that as long as you are interested.. this class is very easy.... Davies is an amazing professor and if you spend time out of class with her.. in class projects are simple! I loved her class.
I'm sorry, but if you have to spend every class trying to get people motivated to do the super hard work in your super awful class, then theres clearly something wrong with you.
I do NOT recommend Davies for any class. She is unclear when assigning projects and with her feedback. She made me do an entire project (creating a book and inking it by hand) 4 times because she "didn't like it" and I still got a C. Picks favorites and if you are not one of them good luck to you.
Absolutely horrible. I have never felt so helpless in a class before. In fact, I have never scored below a B or dropped a class before. This teacher not only left us in the dark, unaware of her expectations or even the direction of the class, but on occasion even mocked students in front of the class. Her class was a complete waste of life...
Had Karen for 2d. One of the worst teachers I've ever had. I don't think she's all there. Picks favorites. The worst critiques. Projects are ridiculously time consuming and she is very picky. You do use a good textbook in this class, though, and learn a lot from it.
Karen is a really caring professor. Out of all my teachers this quarter she made herself the most available for extra-help. She was harder on some students then others but it was due to skill level. If you are a talented artist she will expect more from you. That said, she isn't the best at explaining assignments.
DONT take her for ANY class. Her rubric is useless. Yes she gives tons of xtra help sessions but u HAVE 2 go 2 get all the info u need for projects, there are only so many offered because she does not plan her schedule well and overbooks so the "xtrahelp" is REALLY 'makeup class that she wasnt qualified enough to teach in the time she's given"
Somewhat helpful, but unclear many times. Her outside of class workload is immense, she expects you to do a lot in a little bit of time. DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBOOK, YOU WONT NEED IT. Don't take this class unless you are already experienced with 2D Design.
Professor Davies was very nice and she makes herself very available as far as extra help sessions. However, she's not always entirely clear on what she wants.
I learned absolutely nothing! She was useless! She assigned projects without explaining or giving clear direction. Do not take her. Even though I got a B, it should have been an A.
her grading is good, but its hard to understand her. I had to meet her in office hours to fully grasp the concept f the project
Davies talks way too much. She'll give you a bunch of instructions and then send you on your way. If you dont know what to do ask!! Because it will come back to bite you. Overall she has an okay personality but that class is the bane of my existence.
she is a good grader, her projects are easy but make a hole in your pocket. She is very vague so you gotta ask a lot of questions. Wants a beautiful sketchbook and has an eye for detail; cuts points off your grade if the presentation isn't to her specifications. 3 tests-quiz, mid term and one final divided into 2.
Good professor. Cool projects.
I liked her. The class was intense, she did a good job teaching it. She definitely could have been clearer, but I've learned a lot. I think the people here putting her down didn't try and were lazy.
Professor Davies was utterly fantastic. Although she is very demanding, the work you will produce in this class is well worth it. She taught me everything I needed to know about 2D Design as well as many lessons relating to professionalism and presenting work properly. She is very helpful and will do everything to make sure you learn a lot.
Projects are okay, but not as good as my high school design classes
Ms. Davies is really an okay professor, and she's beginning to grow on me. I really like the assignments, and they turn out really well, better than some of the classes I've seen. She isn't the brightest teacher in the bunch, but she does have a lot of extra help sessions and is overall nice.
Awful teacher. disrespectful. unprofessionally condescending. discriminating. i feel bad for anyone taking her course, you will not be getting the grade you deserve folks.
I hate having been assigned to this teacher. She is vague, unorganized, and overall just not the teacher to choose for design. She switches between hard copy instructions and word of mouth instructions, and its honestly just no easy. I battled for my b. if it weren't for the last project I would have had a C-
Mrs. Davies seems like she knows drawing, but not design. Most of her projects are very drawing intensive, and she seems to grade much heavier on the quality of your drawing than on the quality of your composition. Avoid at all costs.
She was fantastic. Although she was tough at times, she knows a lot and teaches you everything you need to know about composing and designing. The work produced in the class far outshines the work from the other professors. She places a strong emphasis on professionalism, so make sure all your work is clean and presentable when you turn it in.
SUCH A GOOD TEACHER. If you want to actually learn about design, take her. Hands down the best teacher i've had so far. Not only was she phenomenal while I had her, she has also been really involved since I took her and is always going out of her way to help.
Her projects are really time consuming but they are worth it. She always expects high quality work which prepares you for future classes. She is very approachable but demanding. If you want to learn about design and aesthetics, take her, she is the best for it. I really enjoyed her projects and her teaching.
WASTE OF MONEY- absolute arts and crafts class. overly concerned with content of book, rather than structure of the book. The binding techniques learned are not that complex or interesting, EASILY learned via online tutorial. Expects you to dedicate all of your time, money and life to her class. LOTS of busy work.
So we spent way too much time watching the professor demonstrate the proper techniques for upcoming homework. We typically spent 2/3 of the class time watching her make minimal, self explanatory, changes to the composition. We also had to purchase the same items on the supply list MULTIPLE times = insanely frustrating and VERY expensive.
This class by far is one of the best i have taken! The teacher is amazing but you need to show her that you are working for her class! She will help you after the lesson and whenever you send her emails, as well as having help sessions.
The most oppressive classroom I have ever been in. Creativity is stifled; if she feels as though you aren't heading in the direction that she wants, or with the focuses she wants you to emphasize, you aren't good. She's often very sharp with her students, in a way that almost becomes a joke to us when she cuts us off or reprimands us.
Although I liked the class, I didn't like Karen Davies. There were days when it felt more of a lecture class than a studio class. She is very strict when it comes to grading, and your result must be follow ALL the criteria. She can be rude at times, disrespectfully cutting off students when you have a question. However, she'll help you 1-on-1.
I worked my hardest, went to extra help sessions, followed directions and got an A. I had her 5-7:30pm. I loved the projects. They were more interesting than what some of the other teachers were doing and not expensive. Sometimes lengthy lectures and critics but I would take her again. The only test was a vocabulary test. No textbook needed.
The absolute worst professor I have ever taken at SCAD. She is terrible is too many ways to describe with such a small character limit. She is unclear about guidelines, assumes you know everything about 3D Design already, works at a snail's pace, doesn't care what you think or have to say, and constantly trails off in class, wasting your time.
She spends a lot of time demoing but you are left still feeling very unclear about what she wants. She is very broad in her feed back and you walk away not knowing how to fixs things to make it better. All and all I would not take her again!
If u have no idea how to use photoshop either take the time to get a tutor or don't take this class. Never a studio work day and loads of hw. Critique every class sometimes never helpful. U have to beg for help and I always felt like I was doing everything wrong. Dont ask questions she hates that. Make friends b/c they will help u more than her!
not good at all
The projects that you create are really amazing! She gives a ton of work for a foundations class especially compared to other design classes. You can be so confident and happy with your project and she'll just shoot it down so you need to not get attached to your work and remember that everyone likes different things, it's not necessarily wrong
She is a good person, however her projects are fit for aspiring architects, not novice students.
Professor Davies is a really nice woman, but this class was hell for me. I'm not very good building things so I struggled and had to work my butt off to get an A. Beware of the cursed pencil project, it literally made me cry. She is willing to help you if she sees you put forth the effort though.
Davies was easily the worst professor I've ever had. She acts as if she's your only class, and proceeds to bombard you with huge assignments at close due dates. Avoid her like the plague.
Avoid. She's extremely rude. Talks to you like you're 12. She likes to ramble about nonsense and spend an entire lecture period on critiques that could've been done in 1/2 the time. You never actually get to work on stuff in class and don't bother with the syllabus. Worthless. She's very vague and not at all helpful. Again, avoid.
Being in this class is like going back to elementary school art class except you spend tons of money to be talked to like a child. For being a teacher, she really didn't teach me anything. Everything I learned was outside of class on my own with little to no help from Ms. Davies.
Davies is a great professor if you get on her good side and kiss up to her. Even if you don't like her suggestions, do them and you will get an A. Her critiques were the worst part of the class.. took up the entire time and sometimes they leave you with no valuable feedback. Take her if you're good at kissing up to professors.
Had a great time taking this class! Discovered that I love 3D and she really helped me along the way with her insight. Great teacher and is a lot of work but it is worth it!
Great professor! looking back while it was the hardest class i took, I feel this course will decide whether you are able to handle future courses related to your major that deals with designing something. You really have to stretch your creative muscles but also crafting things as well! this is a class you have to take seriously. She guides you
Davies means well... but she's a little out there. If you work hard she will give you a good grade, however, she's not clear on grading criteria and sometimes will throw a curveball at you right before the project is due. She goes off on long tangents while you're supposed to be working which is frustrating. Most of the time its kind of irrelevant.
I loved her class. Honestly, I was terrified going in since I had very little 3D design experience, but she guides you. Projects were time consuming but I expected a lot worse. Shes a great professor and if you follow her suggestions youll be fine! Be ready to buy some expensive supplies, though.
Davies is terrible incarnate. Painful demos everyday, she's annoying, passive aggressive, and her grading is sporadic and unpredictable. If you got stuck with her prepare to be taught be the child of Nick Cage and a sad middle aged woman. No creative freedom. If she gives you a suggestion you better do it. Beware, she might call your project racist
Davies is a mediocre professor at best. Fun projects, but it's expensive, she doesn't communicate critiques clearly, and there were only three projects. She's extremely unprofessional--she teaches like we are 7, MUST show how to drill something eight times, and had us give peer critiques (she said nothing). Pretty much a throwback to summer camp.
I learned nothing. Unclear grading criteria and material list (Caused me spent a lot of extra money). No creative freedom. Repeat project subject (Did 3 sculptures and they were extremely difficult). Her writing assignments were even more than my English composition class. Avoid her unless youve already have lots of 3D design experiences.
The professor is not respected by most of my class and is often even laughed at. She does not have control over the classroom and is talked over. Davies has somewhat pointless demonstrations and interrupts the class during their focused work to give them. Her professionalism could use work as well.
This class is supposed to be a practical but dont expect to actually work on your projects during class time. No, shell take up the entire 2.5 hours with lecture style demos and powerpoints. Her jokes are lame and she is shady to students that are not her favourites. Overall, this class was a super headache.
Treats studio class like a lecture class. You never get any time to work in class. She does not understand how to use photoshop properly and wont explain how layered each projects are as projects 1-4 were basically one project continuously beating a dead horse.
Literally the worst professor I have ever had. She is extremely passive aggressive and tries to be funny but her jokes fall very, very flat. Repeatedly, she has not respected a student's pronouns and she also treated an international student like they were an idiot because her English wasn't that good. Never gives ANY class time to work.
Do not take her. Unfair grading. She treats the class like lectures not studio. Projects are time consuming but you are given literally no time at all to work on it in class because shes to busy giving lectures or demos. The demos are in most cases pointless. She talks to the class as if we are 10 and belittles you.
This class is a studio however you dont get anytime to work on projects. Not only do you have to do a 3d project but you also have to do research and create at least a 30 page PowerPoint on the research and include the process through each project. More like a lecture course then a studio. Demos on demos that take up basically all of the class time
Its hard work, so be sure to truly put your all into the projects and keep an open mind. Ask for help if you need it. Just talking about how hard and awful the class is isnt going to get you anywhere for this one. She is easily accessible to meet during her office hours and very willing to help. the results for the projects are always awesome.
Professor Davies really does not deserve such a low score. Every project that you complete is really cool once you complete it (as long as you put in the time). While the lectures might be a bit long at times, I found the information to be helpful, especially in the creature design project. You learn some useful new materials in this class too.
If you can, please, for your own sake, do not take her class. Very harsh grader feedback is not helpful at ALL. "This has potential." Be prepared to spend a lot more money than just the stuff on the syllabus. "Client Presentations" aka essays in the form of powerpoints seem to be more important than the actual project.
The help she gave was scarce and grumpy. Overall an average but not pleasant class.
I believe Prof. Davies doesn't deserve such a low rating. I took her during Fall 2020 and, although it requires a lot of hard work and dedication, the class projects were interesting and we used a lot of unconventional media. Her lectures can be a bit draggy sometimes but she is very kind and open to help you out if you need time or assistance.
Somewhat difficult to work with, feedback is good but almost every class is a critique. Do not expect to get work done during class, even though its a studio. Make sure to let her know if you have anxiety about being called on in the middle of class. Also struggles to use the correct pronouns. Extremely tough grader, expects more than is listed...
Professor Davies has a clear expectation set for you. As long as you stay on top of your work, this class is fine. You will need some time to work outside of class, most classes are lectures or critiques. She will give feedback on ways to improve very directly, she may come off as a bit harsh but she is just trying to help.
Definitely one of the worst professors Ive ever had. Photoshop tutorials take up a majority of class time, critiques are either 7 seconds or the entire class. Was also very passive-aggressive. I learned nothing about design and all the projects felt like middle school arts-and-crafts. Barely anyone in our class actually respected or liked her.
As far as being a good person goes, Professor Davies is kind and caring most of the time. There were a few occasions where she was overly passive aggressive and rude and she had a tendency to treat us like children. Class wise, her teaching style is horrible. You have no in-class time to work and she fills up the whole time with pointless lectures.
She is passive aggressive if you use zoom and she touched me inappropriately on presentation day before class. DO NOT take karen davies under any circumstances - she should not have a job at SCAD
I refuse to call her a professor. This woman has bias against students if she doesn't like them personally, gives us no time to work in class and lectures the entire time which is extremely unrelated and unimportant. Very passive aggressive and rude to students. She also tried hitting me with a stick during critique. Don't take her. Embarassing.
Professor Davies is really sweet but unfortunately, her classes really dragged. The critiques lasted way longer than they should and her feedback was never the clearest. However, she grades relatively well and the workload is pretty easy. It really depends on what you're willing to put up with.
I didn't have too much of a problem with Prof. Davies but she can be very unclear with what exactly the homework is. She grades pretty easy but trust me she'll make it very obvious if she doesn't like your work on presentation day. I also felt like the sometimes hour long demos could've been shortened to about 15 minutes.
Don't take Davies. It's not a difficult class but it's incredibly boring, she once read the elements of design to us off a slideshow. She has the constant energy of a disappointed mom so you feel weirdly guilty the whole time. Also the class is expensive, to the point where the materials were not accessible to myself and some other students.
She is a very tough grader. She isn't clear on instructions.a
Most expensive class at SCAD probably. You will be at ex libris, hardware stores, Blick, and 50 other places just to prep. You will spend close to or over $100 for every project. Snarky passive aggressive remarks towards students. You just sit and watch powerpoints just to make similar powerpoints. This class will cause you loads of stress. RUN....
Prepare to spend lots of money, and waste lots of time in class. The projects dragged due to too many requirements, and critiques felt forced and awkward. She addresses a lot of questions with a condescending tone, and spends way too much class time on unnecessary demos/ lectures. I wish I took this class with another professor.
Don't read the bad reviews they freaked me out and I almost switched out but i'm glad I didn't. So nice and such fun intricate projects. Literally just be creative and have a good attitude and you'll do well. Creative designers will love this class its very hands on. I think the bad reviews fully came from people who didn't care about anything.
I thoroughly enjoyed this class. The projects were so creative and fun. On work days, she would put on music and walk around helping each student if needed. As someone who had no prior experience with 3D Design, she provided great feedback and hosted extra help sessions. Materials can be pricey but she lends some things out to use during class too.
Profess Davies is very unkind towards trans students. She constantly misgenders people even after being corrected, and is overall very disrespectful. She gave us a week and a half to work on our final. She can be condescending at times and overall the class is difficult and not enjoyable. Do not take her class.
Prof. Davies is very stern. She sometimes has difficulties expressing herself and is critical on students who do not show improvement or effort. Get on her good side and she will be a valuable resource for you in the class. If you can withstand her strange habit of interrupting and show amble effort and motivation, you will do fine in the class.
Davies, overall, was decent. However the class itself is very disorganized (she gave us a little over a week for our final, while we had over a month for the project before?) she never clearly explained project expectations, and often acted strangely and interrupted students mid-presentation. No flow to the class- it hardly ever went smoothly.
She is very passive-aggressive, so condescending, and overall does not give clear instructions. She expects too much from students and way too overambitious. Her feedback is not really that helpful, and rather than giving constructive criticism she judges your work.
I had completed one online course with this professor, which was subpar due to her lack of helping students and rigorous grading. I ended up taking her again on campus, to which I promptly dropped the course. Very egotistical and downright vile. Humiliated me in front of the whole class for using sensory aids I had accommodations for.
Love Prof. Davies! Shes super caring about her students and gives excellent feedback during critiques. 100% would take again
Prof. Davies is an alright professor. She does pick favorites though-- so if you're goody goody like me then you'll survive with a good relationship with her. Honestly, her projects are pretty fun. There's the wooden stick project, hybrid sculpture project (my personal fav) and a repeat item project. Overall an okay class! Not too bad.
She is very nice but at the same time barley gives any time to work on the projects she gives us.
Not the best, not the worst. There are three projects for the whole quarter, and the way she spreads them out across the 10 weeks is. interesting. You don't get a lot of time per project, and she also requires that a good bit of the work gets done in class. Her demos can be quite boring and drawn out and her requirements can be a bit confusing.
Davies is a complex character. On one hand she can be kind and caring, bringing in the class cookies and helping students come up with ideas for projects. But on the other hand she can be extremely rude and a tough grader. Takes a lot of credit off for late assignments, beware.
At first I did not like her, but as classes progressed, things got better. Her projects, while thought-provoking and time-consuming, were pretty interesting. I struggled to turn things in on time, so prioritize time management. She is understanding if you let her know if things beforehand (via email), but she's just quiet otherwise. Critiques, bluh
It's honestly appalling that a professor this closed minded and harsh can be teaching at a school like SCAD. Half the school is film majors but she doesn't care, and will grade and give feedback on your work incredibly harshly. Rude, bad with technology, inaccessible, overly complicated assignments, and unrealistic expectations. DONT TAKE.
More difficult than most of my other foundation classes/professors but it's not the worst. Her project requirements are very constrictive with creativity, you're not allowed as many creative freedoms as I was given in my other classes. This was my least favorite part of the class, but overall? She's not too bad. Make sure to get on her good side!!
The professor seemed annoyed whenever asked questions by email, An early assignment during the quarter had little info on the important areas she wanted us to cover, a tutorial would have helped, no makeup assignments, ELOs meant nothing, tried asking her help on an assignment, said one thing and never replied after just unnecessarily difficult time
Unprofessional, condescending, and rude. She gives a lot of homework with almost zero guidance. I think she believes every student only has her class for the semester since there is something she requires everyday, regardless of it being an online, asynchronous class. The workload is insane.
Not very kind or understanding.
If I could give her a 0 I would. The only good things about the class are the fun projects and that she gives time in class to do them sometimes. She rarely gave good feedback and criticism. The way she grades is ridiculous, giving good projects bad grades. Overall she isnt worth taking, take any other professor if you can help it.
She was very hard on grading assignments. She also had expected so much out of us, but she did not give us enough time to be able to fulfill her expectations. This class is also very expensive because she makes us buy materials. As a person, she is very nice and understanding, but as a grader, she is really difficult.
One of the worst profs I've ever had. I'd rather drop out than take her again. she wasn't understanding whatsoever after I had a loss in my family, harsh grader, and expected students to have a golden star project with barely enough time to work on said projects. Don't take her. Save your money.
Prof. Davies runs a challenging class, but staying on top of the workload and utilizing resources like unstuck study for study prep can really pay off. She's strict but fair - engaging with her feedback goes a long way. Overall, a rewarding experience for motivated students.
Do not take Karen Davies for any class. Not only did she show clear bias in the classroom environment, but she also offered little feedback during critique, and when she occasionally decided to give her feedback, it did not feel professional or knowledgeable at all. She is out of touch- both regarding students and technology.
She was the first professor to make me cry at SCAD and had the audacity to be sarcastic with me when I got upset and overwhelmed after only having one day to do a sculpture. If you end up taking her, NEVER miss her class or she hates you for the rest of the quarter. She rarely has work days and expects you to have everything done by the next class.
She thinks she is the only class. She will make you WORK. And make you feel bad about not being better. She will literally make you feel bad about a project you put days into. Not only do you have to buy the kit. She makes you buy things you will only use ones. She isn't very forgiving on anything-but she did surprisingly grade my class easy..
She is the worst!!! Heed my warning. Not sympathetic at all, nor helpful in or outside of class. She does not read her emails nor does she respect her students. She makes you buy extra materials like you rich. Her demos are at least 1 hour each and she does not let you speak about the projects made during critique. She only gives negative feedback.
Prof Davies has a passible class if you are super passionate about making meaningful art. The issue is that she is very old school and doesn't structure her class time well. You will be working non-stop but if you kiss up a healthy bit, you'll be ok. BE CAREFUL on exams. I wouldn't recommend if you're a "non-artsy" major such as film or acting.
Classes are 2.5 hours but very little class time is utilized for projects. Bare minimum materials cost 250$+. Professor completely made up or forgot project details on a few occasions and it will affect grading. As long as this is a required class, just get it over with, but be ready to have your patience tested more than anything.
I am very disappointed with this class. Of all the classes I have taken at SCAD, this was by far the worst. She does not know how to use Blackboard at all, so there is never any homework posted, just the projects, and there is very little info as far as project guidelines. Overall, I have gained little to nothing from this class.
She gives very little time for difficult assignments and isn't helpful when you ask for guidance usually just makes it clear you're doing it wrong. She rarely checks her emails, and the materials are expensive, with extra items not listed on the syllabus.
If you are looking forward to countless all nighters crying over abstract sculptures, then Davies is the professor for you. She is very nice and understanding however no matter how good at time management you are, the workload is way too heavy. You cannot miss class otherwise you will get marked down or could even fail a project. VERY EXPENSIVE
She went against HER OWN late work policy. She gave me a 0 for something that was not even 24 hours late, even though her policy says I should have gotten a 10% deduction. Blatantly ignores university rules about late work and gives zeros for ANYTHING remotely late. And there are only three grading opportunities. Not willing to negotiate at all.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR Unorganized, condescending communication, and unclear expectations. My documented accommodations for extended time were ignored. I was told I had an extension while sick, but details were unclear, and I still received a zero. The class was stressful and extremely unsupportive.
Her class could have been really interesting and fun but she and her personality ruin it. She doesn't care about you and very clearly has an ideal type of artist in mind when grading. She was not reciprocative of any of my ideas in class and was often snarky and/or rude to students who didn't quite align with her. Ruined my quarter. Avoid
