I have a 3.5 GPA.Text Book is a photocopy bought for $120, it hasn't any solutions or index for referencing its useless.Instructs from a diff book but expects H/W from the photocopy.I had to buy another chemistry book just to keep up.Class is Unorganized, lots of homework, jumps around, talks fast, puts review online night before test. Its a nightmare
She will mark off points on you showing your work even if you got the problem right. She does not care if you understand what she is teaching. She will continue moving very fast. She like it when students drop she states she has less papers to grade.
Teacher is horriable. She does not care that 95% of the class does not understand her. 3/4 of class have already dropped. Students have no interest in her. Tests are beyond any material reviewed. Absolute nightmare!
Teaches from notes posted online, they aren't usually posted by classtime but expects you to keep up.Does not schedule office time on class days, is unapproachable and shows frustration if you don't understand material.Grades are posted at least 2 weeks late, tests on material not covered in class.Very bad at managing classtime at your expense.
NEVER a time where more than 1/2 the class passed the test. VERY UNORGANIZED! Talks too damn fast.Doesnt explain, just expects u 2 know. grades are posted late.do NOT take this professor if u have the option!! no curves even if EVERYONE were 2 fail.she does put covered material on the test, just in an ENTIRELY different way u didnt learn in class.
omg!what a nightmare!!!!do not take her class. out of 25 ppl 12 stayed till the end and only half passed. very unorganized.
Worst teacher ever. Its like suicide if you are in her class. Just don't take her. Too much work and don't explain problems well. Goes really fast. she expect us to finish two chapters in two classes and we will need to take an exam after that. Lastely, she arrange that test on the drop day and she expect all of us to drop the class.
Don't ever think about getting an A in this class because the chance is just one in a million. For Bs, probably one out of the entire class. Cs, you will need to study extremely hard. Ds, Fs and Drops are whole bunch of it.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!!! she doesnt care whether u understand the material or not..she goes through the material really fast...She needs to slow down w/ her lecture....
worst teacher i ever had. her lectures did not help me at all. she was not willing to bend the grades at all, and her tests are very tricky! my friend who also took her course failed too.. most of her lectures were based on the book and she actually made everything harder than it was suppose to be! she made me feel dumb in the class..
I thought she was very organized and her lectures were well presented. However,be aware: her class is very difficult she covers at least 2 chapters per week(fast) and her tests are a bit tricky - u need to be creative to figure out problems b/c they are quite different from review and text.More difficult than same class at ACC or UT.
I took same class 10 yrs. ago at santa monica college in los angeles - I got a B back then, but I re-took it here to refresh my skills. This class is much harder because of the speed and the problems she uses for tests. Plus, you end up doing 2 labs in one day
She class is sort of challenging but she's not out to fail anyone as long as you do your work. She gives alot of homework to better help you understand the chapter. If you keep up, you will be fine.
She is a very nice teacher. she really help me understanding all of the concepts in chem 1411. i strongly recommend her to anyone who wants to take chem 1411
She is good a teacher. She likes students who do their homework.
She is a good teacher, gives a lot of extra credit assignments. You have to do your homework and study every week in order to get an A, but that is how it should be in every science class. She is fair and always available to help and repeats the explanations if it is necessary. I recommend her if you want to learn Chemistry.
Really wish i wouuld've taken someone else. Seriously, only take her if you have no other choice. Really useless, comes late almost always...not that clear talks awkwardly and doesn't really bother to go into detail, and everytime she does, she goes off on a tangent and starts telling the most boring stories.....wasn't happy at all
I really liked her. I think she is a good teacher. If you study you will definitely do well in the class.
This teacher is not helpful at all. She uses alot of out of the box questions for her tests. She does not follow her syllabus. Her last test was over 6 chapters!
Do not recommend. Late to class and always off went off topic.
This professor is incredibly helpful and VERY knowledgable about everything she is teaching. I took a 5 week class, so everything was crammed together in a short amount of time. If you work hard, do the homework, and take advantage of extra credit, this is a very doable class.
Last few weeks of the semester and the class of 30 went down to like 10. I doubt anyone passed the 2nd exam. She gives quizzes every lecture day, but doesn't mention whats going to be on it. I know I'm going to fail but decided to stay in the class to have a better concept for the next time.
I got A this spring semester and I know other 2 friends in class get A too. Read the power point before class will help you know the main idea of that chapter; doing problems , extra credit up to 30 points. Besides, doing pre-lab at home to get credit for a report. She's a good teacher, but she's also fair.
Grades hard and not punctual (even finals). Tutorials were given but not for chemistry. This class was advanced and not your normal chemistry class especially for Chemistry I. I recommend other professors before taking this course.
she's a good teacher and she makes you work in order to understand the materia. she usually start each chapter with a little story which makes it more interesting. besides, she gives a lot of extra credits to improve your final grade.
Fails to explain the material thoroughly which makes you wonder if she has the firm grip on the subject herself. Deflects attention when asked of a question that she cannot answer satisfactorily in its full context. Gives you hard questions on the tests that even she cannot solve. Confuses students by making mistakes all the time. Do not take her.
This teacher is not helpful at all. Just reads the powerpoint and can only show easy examples. Do not take her class.
D's F's & drops are regular with this teacher. This is only a freshman level course and that wouldn't happen with other teachers so that tells you something. Do not recommend. Tests are nothing like reviews so what's the point.
First week was great, I felt ahead of the pack for having read the first chapter and gone over the first lab. Second week I already had my first F for not doing the pre-lab at home, 0 on the lab. You have to memorize the periodic table of elements, the prefixes for the SI system and their meaning. Spends most of the time telling pointless stories.
It was an exciting start, I was eager to learn chemistry. Unfortunately the material was not thoroughly explained. If the student doesn't have a chemistry background , the student will have a very hard time with this professor. Very important details are left out.
The course was poorly constructed and test heavy. Criteria to pass exams was not clear. Practice exams were inconsistently offered and at times did not cover the material that was on the actual exam. Professor waited to complete exam reviews at the end of the course when many students already dropped the course. Skip this instructor!
She does not know how to teach. She will make you feel like you are stupid or something. DO NOT TAKE HER, SHE'S TERRIBLE. We started with 25 people in our class and there were only 8 people left at the end of the semester, it will seem like it was normal to her because she did not care. Her tests are sooooo heavy, be sure you read.
Class of Summer II 2018. I highly do not recommend this teacher, shes the worst teacher ever! She expects her students to know everything before the lecture and at the end of the semester she expects you to know things shed never went through! Please, if you dont want to fail in chemistry, I high recommend signing up for a diferente class.
Be ready to live and breathe chemistry. Professor Fortune does not teach. Teach yourself with videos and reading. Review is not similar to exams. Teacher is off topic. Will not curve exams, extra credit is not enough. Prof, will make belittle you in front of class.
What a joke! Dosn't show up to class on time, unprepared, absoultely terriable! I doubt she has a college degree. She is nuts - several voices going off in this ladys head. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!!!!!!
This professor is an amazing person, she gives time to turn in late work, and shows caring attitude to all students!
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. She is unprepared for class, late and never actually teaches the material she tests us on. This class was horrible! We started with 25 students and ended the semester with 10 enrolled. I only passed because I studied on my own time and taught myself the material. Professor just argues about everything!! Don't do it!
Don't take this professor for online classes. She's ill-prepared, responds late or not at all, and gives assignments that defeat the purpose of the course being online. You'll have to work around your partners' schedules for group projects, quizzes with software that records you, and "thoughts on the quiz" that lowers your grade if done wrong.
Karen Fortune is a nightmare. DO NOT TAKE HER COURSE. She is rude, disrespectful, belittles students and makes them feel stupid for asking questions. She DOES NOT TEACH. She wastes class time. Youll have to teach yourself as well as find the time to complete her irrelevant assignments. Save your time and money.
disorganized, unprepared, (<-- strongly believe she confuses her classes ) and no effort to help us understand the content. It is concerning when each and every student is struggling in this class!
She doesnt respond to emails . She doesnt give fair grades . She is VERY unorganized! Dont take her this is your fair warning
Her teaching qualities are terrible. She can't correctly apply a lecture, her demands for understanding the material with no help is unreasonable. Tests are a total 80% of the grade. She constantly blames the students for cheating, not understanding chemistry, and so on. Avoid this instructor at all costs, I do not fail classes and I got by with C.
She is unprepared and unprofessional, she did not even attend the first class of the semester and did not even let anyone now. The activities during class sometimes take so long with very little learning involved. I would not recommend.
she's the worst to be honest. very unprofessional and her grading process is just too picky. she's not a good instructor, the way she wants work done is too time-consuming and its confusing. the quiz will be 5 questions in 30 minutes yet she will take the whole 1 hour 30 mins in class to do the same type of questions in the way she wants.
I spent 40+ hrs per week some weeks on this nightmare of a class. She reviewed how she wanted things formatted AFTER each quiz and not beforehand. Hw every week that took years off my life. Quizzes that were only 30 minutes long and should have been 45-60. At one point gave us only 36 hrs to do a GROUP project. Unreasonable.
If you are considering taking this professor I want to warn you that she is very disorganized and is very neglectful when it comes to communicating with students. I took a 5-week summer course with Prof. Fortune and she almost never communicated her expectations and didn't submit any grades for the entire semester until the end of the last week
All I can say is, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THIS TEACHER, YOU WILL REGRET IT. This was one of the worst teachers I have ever had. The class started with 30 people and ended with 8 and I don't think any one of us got above a C even though we were all working our butt off.
Worst Teacher ever!!! Does not teach or respond to messages. Acts concern about your grades but truly does not care. Asks for help but does not respond till a week later. Dropped and was the best decision ever made.
Avoid at all costs! If you want a professor who teaches you, she is not the one. She doesn't clarify anything, except to "buy a mirror" for proctored tests. The only guidance you're given is the syllabus, which was useless and lists incorrect due dates. Canvas format was a mess. I've never been gaslighted so hard in my life. No standards at HCC!
DONOT TAKE HER!!!!!!! you will be disappointed in yourself. whatever written in here is true! She could not even finish her own quiz with in the time frame she gave us to finish her quiz. She is so DEFENSIVE and does not want to change her ways. She is so LAZY. And silly things matter to her, so she takes off points when you don't do that!!
Very unorganized for chem 1111 lab, gives quizzes which arent even about the lab we did. Don't take her!!!!!!
This professor made the class more difficult than it should have been. The homework itself is extremely difficult and will take your several hours to complete. She is an extremely harsh grader and does not give you enough resources to prepare for exams. She assigns way too many group projects that are not even for a grade and her lectures are quick
I took her chem lab 1111. This professor is so unorganized and forgets what she tells you and when confronted she denies it even when multiple students confirmed what she told the entire class, she doesn't teach and makes you feel like an idiot when you ask questions. Does not answer in a timely manner or just ignores messages. Don't take her!
Very unorganized, lots of group work
The professor not only offers no help if you reach out to her but also gives a huge amount of workload. I reached out to her asking for aid due to not receiving enough help with learning the topic and she told me go back to the textbook or find a tutor. I would not recommend this class to anyone. If she is your only option wait next semester.
The course with this teacher is very challenging. It requires many lengthy and difficult assignments, and each assignment has a relatively small impact on the final grade.
The lab assignments are not consistently assigned due dates in Canvas but you will still lose points for late submissions when they get graded many weeks after when they were supposedly due. No preparation was offered for the final exam then the class had an average final grade of 27, with the highest grade in the 50s.
She gives horrible instructions. She a tough grader for no absolute reason. She gets defensive when you ask her to clarify instructions that she did not clarify herself. All the work is tedious and for no good reason. She hasn't even lectured at all during the class. I learned absolutely nothing and the work doesn't even feel worth it. RUN.
One of the worst professors I have had to take; her grading is extremely unsure and she fails to give us any criteria until our labs are already graded. She even grades wrong and when brought up in class, she will say to email her and she'll fix it, but doesn't. Be aware, my grade was one of the best in my class by a large margin.
This was the last professor left, so I had to take this class. The assignments weren't as hard, however there were lots of them. Just be ready to write a lot and in detail for your answers on the lab. The class was slightly scattered, and due dates as well as instructions were unclear, however the class wasn't as hard as I thought it would be.
DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT TAKING THIS CLASS
Worst professor I had ever had, she unorganized and she doesn't know how to teach. Her lectures was just her explaining it for herself as a refresher for her, when we spoke up she would laugh it off and call us crazy, during testing, she would blame a "hacker" if our computer weren't responding to the lockdown browser. She grade stuff late too.
Don't. You'll thank me later. If you do though, best of luck.
WORST TEACHER EVER. Only starts grading on the LAST WEEK of the semester. No feedbacks. Doesn't show up for 80% of the classes, not even the final exam.
Do. Not. Take. Any. Class. With. Her. Even if it puts you behind on graduating, don't do it! Our class started with 25 people. Most everyone dropped and we were left with 6 by the end. Most of those 6 failed anyways. She will make up reasons to accuse you of cheating and take points off. She refuses to look at your scratch paper for exams.
She is by far the worst prof I have had. This is a one-credit class and I am doing more work for it than my 4 other classes, combined. Very unforgiving. I registered one week late and had one day to do pre-lab for labs 1 and 2, and she gave me a failing grade even though the assignments were submitted. Emailed and was told it was "too late." AVOID
*Very* disorganized, due dates change frequently. Not responsive to emails. Deviates from schedule in syllabus. Shows up late frequently. She isn't mean, just not great at clarifying things. Lots of extra credit options for lecture. You will be teaching yourself this material. 100% avoid.
Karen if you're seeing this I'm begging you to grade something, anything
DO NOT TAKE HER, our class started with 30+ people and currently has 7 going into week 7. She does not grade things on time, has an attitude when you ask her a question, and expects you to know everything off the top of your head. A cardboard box could be a better teacher than Ms. Fortune.
Pearson had a constant glitch where it would make students repurchase the text over and over again. Despite not everyone having $60 to spare at any given moment she refused to adjust the homework deadline that was also in person. She's not great take a diff prof or take it next semester.
SAVE YOURSELF, DON'T TAKE! She was one of the only professors I could take for lab. Her grading criteria is unclear and difficult. She will take points off for whatever little mistake she can think of as if she wants you to fail. She has been reported to the chair by a handful of our students so far, hopefully something will be done.
This is the worst professor; she doesn't teach at all and would give you a 0 just because she wants to. She would help you but only to fail the class. Please don't waste your money on her class; she's not helping students. It may seem like an online class, so the professor is not that problematic, but she is.
Run, don't even think about it
If this is a last resort to take this class don't..... She doesn't know how to grade her own assignments, never replies to emails, grades extremely late to the point the dean had to tell her to grade (which she still did not do) and is overall a really horrible professor to have for general chemistry. Save your time and money and don't take her.
She still hasn't put the final grades in. Takes ages to grade. Her grading criteria is very unclear, you won't understand what exactly she expects until you get your grade back and she marked points off for every question. She makes things insanely difficult, she must not want anyone to pass her class. Do yourself a big one and do not take her.
So, as soon as the semester started I knew it was going to be super hard to deal with her. Whenever you ask questions from her, she gets mad. She expects you to know everything, she never responds to emails on time and sometimes ignores them. She doesnt have a clear grading criteria. She doesn't care about you! NEVER CHOOSE HER CLASS!
RUNNNNNNN. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR EVEN IF LAST RESORT!!!!!! If i could giver her 0 stars I would. shes not even deserving of one star. PLEASE listen and acknowledge all her poor reviews its all true. Everything ive read prior students say about her is true and ongoing.
I feel so sad watching new students take her class. Even if it takes you longer to graduate DO NOT TAKE HER. The highest grade anyone ever got on a test last semester with her was a 72. I just took my first test for my new chem class and got an easy 86. New students, report your issues to Grace Zoroob, the Dept Chair of Chemistry. Power in numbers.
Worst class I ever took. If you have to take her class, make it your only one that semester—it's much heavier. She's extremely tough on grading, even if you do your best and submit everything on time. I've always maintained an A GPA, but for the first time, I feel like I'm failing, Because the amount of load is beyond my control. Very disappointed.
This has been the most challenging professor I've had so far. She makes the class incredibly difficult, and I wouldn't recommend taking her. her class is heavily based on exams, so daily grades have little impact on your final grade. Even if it's your last option, I'd suggest looking for alternatives.
It was the first day of class and she didn't send no email to any of the class that she was gonna be late. We all waited for half the class for her to show up. We left the attendance sheet for her to put it in.
I tell stories about her to my new classmates and their jaws just drop. I think she's divinely protected by a higher power because it's a miracle she is still employed
The worst of the worst! You wonder why such a horrible professor is not fired? She's black, that's why. HCC is a joke, this professor is a joke.
The tests she gave us were difficult for no real reason. The highest average out of all three exams was only a 46. Her study guides were basically useless, because almost nothing on them actually showed up on the tests. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS.
Being knowledgeable in a subject does not equate to good teaching, has a difficult to follow lecture. Does not respect your time, consistently late every class without any apology or prior notice, was literally an hour late to the final exam. Study guides are nothing like any of the exams. One of the worst professors ever, don't take her.
Dont take her, I knew about chem prior and still struggled, keep in mind I got an A in ap chem but nearly foiled this class. This professor is not good. Her tests are not like the review, she barely even teaches, she doesn't care and the dept doesn't do anything about it and so many students lose money due to failing this class.
