Mme. W is an amazing teacher. But a warning, French is a difficult language, and anyone without who isn't serious about learning it shouldn't bother taking ANY French class, but Ms. Whittlesey does an amazing job. Very helpful, eager to help her students, and very understanding. If you're taking French she is the teacher to take.
I didn't like her, but she's not that bad.If you do not go to class everyday know that you are not going to pass.
I enjoyed the class and thought she kept it very interesting. She was helpful and responded quickly to emails.
She is very understanding that most students are only taking the class to gain their foreign language requirements.
Great class! It was really nice to get the prereqs for advanced French at Valencia, and Mme. Whittlesey really likes being there for you. You can tell she's personally invested in each student improving their French abilities, and is really good at challenging and advancing every student, even if students are on different levels.
Great Professor! She is very caring and works hard to make sure everyone learns. Lots of work but not too difficult. Just study and do everything that is asked of you. FOLLOW DIRECTIONS. This is very important. Class is long but she makes it fun and breaks it up with various activities that help you learn as well.
If you actually want to learn french. She will help you do that. If you take time out to do the homework & discussion they don't have to be great but show consistency and she see's that . I would definitely recommend her for both French 1 & 2. She cares about her students and has a great sense of humor. I wouldnt care to take any other teacher.
Great woman! She really wants you to learn French. She does give you quite a few lab work assignments but it's worth it in the end because she helps you out whenever you need it, and if you put in the effort you can definitely receive a quality grade! Learned more than thought I could, feel like I can go to France and be okay!
a VERY fun professor! Lots of homework (lab, videos, online discussions) but not hard..do it early and you'll be fine!! Keeps class interesting with lots of fun activities to practice the language. WILL have her again for FRE1121!!
Fast and fun, this class rocks!!!! Not that hard but- do your homework and listen to the prof. She does care and explains the material very well. Hope to take another class with her.
She is one of the best teachers I've had, and the fact that I'm unable to have her teach my second French class makes me very sad. She's really fun and personable, and she really seems to enjoy teaching. She's happy to answer any question, and is extraordinarily helpful. I'd recommend her to anyone who wishes to learn French.
Best language teacher ever by far. She actually cares and will bend over backwards to help you understand the material. She takes any time necessary to help you and no question is a stupid question. She is extremely personable and friendly I really enjoyed her class. If you take ANYONE for French make it this teacher.
She is very helpful and teaches well. Take her, point blank period. French isn't easy but with patience and practice it can be done.
Mme W. is an awsome professor! She makes the class a lot of fun. I feel I learned a lot during the course of this class. Je recommanderais la classe!
She's an amazing French Prof! The first day in class, she only spoke French for the first twenty minutes and had everyone thinking she didn't kno much English! I had a lot of fun in that class, I learned a lot and that was only French I (elementary french).
I adored this teacher. She made class interesting and well worth each minute. I feel I really learned a lot. She's very understanding about students feeling awkward and apprehensive about speaking a foreign language. I went in the first day fearful of sounding like an idiot and came out the last day very confident and in love with the language.
Amazing teacher. Lots of work (as with any foreign language). Works with you on EVERYTHING. She's fun, exciting, animated, and just the best teacher you could ask for when learning or just wanting to pass a foreign lanuage class, Had her for FRENCH 1&2..got A's in both!!!
Professor Fowler has been one of the best teachers I've ever had. She was very nice, did everything she could to help me, along with everybody else in the class, to get to know French better, and she really liked to involve us in fun and interesting activities that made the subject even more interesting. Great teacher!
Insane amount of work. Moves way too fast with very little actual "teaching". Very nice person but expectations are unrealistic!! STAY AWAY unless you want to absolutely drown in work!
Loved this professor! She is very amusing and fun and likes to do active class activities rather than just lecture. She is very nice and is helpful. In this class, I feel like I actually learn French! She has a lot of energy and I think she is a fine professor.
Had for French 2,makes learning fun, lots of different activities, extremely helpful, really wants to you do well. Hightly reccomend
Great Professor. French is a really hard language and this course has a LOT of work, but Professor Fowler made it as fun and easy as possible.
Amazing Teacher. She is really fun and cares about helping you get the best grade you possibly can. She will work with you if you don't understand something and she has a lot of fun activities that will help you study for tests. I took her for French 1 and we requested a class for French 2 at our campus because we liked her so much.
She was one of the coolest professor I have had so far. Although we do have a lot of work, it all helps in the end. Her class was fun on most days. I learned quite a bit of french in only 1 semester. Ty professor.
Really good teacher, Her projects are easy and fun. I loved the games we played to make the learning easier. I would take her over again if I could.
Love, love, LOVE Prof.Whittlesey. She does everything she can to help you pass and clearly cares about each and every one of her students. Makes class very fun and is there to answer any questions you may have. To those complaining about homework, you must be really lazy. How else do you expect to learn a FOREIGN language?! Thank you Professor!!!
She was a fun professor and was always enthusiastic. We always did fun activities to help us learn. There was just alot of work and I had alot of trouble keeing up.
Fantastic take her for French. She is fair and helpful and you need that in a foreign language.
Mme. W was super nice and helpful, she doesn't expect you to speak perfect French. In class she has a bunch of games to help learning the language. She's really easy to approach to ask questions. The tests are a bit difficult, but shes pretty nice about grading. I would definitely recommend her to anyone looking to take French.
The BEST French teacher possible
Best professor I had in my 3 years of schooling. Very helpful, supportive and understanding. You can't help but respect her unconditionally for the lengths she is willing to go for you. Can't go wrong with her if taking any french courses. Just go to class, study, and do the online work and actually try. HIGHLY recommended.
She is great, she makes learning french a lot of fun!
Am I the only one who thinks this prof is a complete disaster? EXTREMELY disorganized, loses test grades, not willing to teach. Shows us powerpoints of her trips instead. I love French & I'm a straight A student, but this prof made my life hell. If I wanted to teach myself I wouldn't have paid almost $400 to attend this class! Don't take her.
One of the best professors I've had yet. Very energetic and down to earth. She makes learning French fun and interactive. The final group project was great and was grouped with friends in the class. A LOT OF HOMEWORK. But if you do the work and study you will be more than fine. There isn't another french prof better than her. Take her!
She is nice and funny, but she LOVES to hear herself talk. Don't make any sudden moves or talk out of turn because she gets easily distracted and disorganized. For hybrid, you teach yourself French, and during class meetings, she is very rude answering questions she tells us to bring in if we need help. Could've been worse but she's too stressful.
Don't take this teacher, she is more interested in her own college courses and second job singing at disney than taking a few extra minutes with her students. Its better taking this class online with another professor since she teaches nothing in class. She tells you to do the exercises online and if you have questions ask them in class. Worthles
Don't waste your time, take it online with another teacher because thats about how much you learn going to class. Stupid group projects which teach you nothing. She is too busy with her other classes she is taking and her second job to take more time to help you if you are having problems. Harsh grader with no mercy on discussions.
If you want to waste your money and time take this teacher, if you want to pass and go on to fre 2 take someone else. I had to take french 2 with another teacher and when the semester started i was lost and I was lucky that the professor knew fowler whittlesey because they knew of her reputation of being a bad teacher and they helped me pass A+
Very good at hitting all the different ways people learns. Visually, kinesthetically, and auditory. She's fun, strict, but understanding and gives many chances for you to succeed if you just show effort. I had a french teacher before her that i wont name, and I failed that class. I missed assignments and deadlines, yet managed to get a C.
I love Mme W! She's outgoing and makes the classroom a fun learning environment. She understands French is difficult to learn, and is more than lenient with her grading if you actually show interest in the class/show up. I'm taking her for French 2, also. Definitely take her! You won't be sorry!
Mme W (Fowler) was a wonderful Professor. I absolutely adored the class and she was a real gem. Come to class , participate, and you will pass. She adores teaching French and she wants the best for her students. She will work with you to make sure you understand. I wish all my professors were as awesome as her. I would take her a million times over
This semester was a mess. Prof. only focused on her personal life and it showed in class. I speak 3 languages and I couldn't learn my 4th from this Prof. Complete waste of time and money, she is very hit-or-miss from what it seems like, apparently she was good to other classes. Many people dropped the class early on, & remaining students suffered.
The professor is a total hoot. She makes class super fun, and quite easy to understand. I saw quite a few struggle, but also confessed a lack of discipline. If you take her class, be sure to read, keep up with assignments and participate. There are MANY ways to get extra credit including attendance to tutoring, a win-win! Good luck!
Professor Fowler is great at getting students to understand French. In-class is a hybrid with online homework. She is willing to set aside an entire class to discuss culture. Extra credit is offered for attending special events, finding certain things on the site, or receiving tutoring. Read all instruction. Stay at level. First test is take-home.
almost 6 hours a week to finish homework and then the its hard to do and doesn't help you really learn unless you're studying french every single day for hours (which if you work full time and go to other classes full time isn't realistic). The professor isn't organized in sharing things through blackboard either. Info is everywhere and not easy.
Prof. Fowler as a person is the sweetest. However her online French class is not one I would recommend to anyone. This class is all over the place, there is so much information that you drown in it. Also, the program used (VHL) is $$$ and not an easy way to learn. I wish she was more concise and organized, the class would be so much easier.
Found professor to be very helpful. Looking at comments about a lot of work; true, we had about 6 hours most weeks, but was when I took online, which 4 hours would have been time spent in class; gotta learn! Hadsemester b4 on campus, lot less time spent on the computer doing work ... maybe 2 hours most weeks, not so bad. Easy to pass if you try.
As someone who had never learned a thing about French, I learned more in a condensed 6 week course with her than I did taking language in high school for 4 years. She is very kind and really cares about her students. She's leaves a lot of room for mistake because she knows learning a new language is difficult, and she'll work with you if you ask.
Prof. Fowler is very passionate about French and she is so caring about her students. She makes the class so much fun by playing games and doing projects that help reinforce the material. She replies quickly to messages and gives so many ways to earn extra credit during the semester. She is one of my favorite professors hands down! 100% recommend.
This prof is EXTREMELY disorganized! The dates on her assignments are for other semesters and all over the place! Her instructions are RIDICULOUSLY long and convoluted! This was an online course but I was required to go to the campus and the final was WRITTEN and extremely difficult! Take another prof or if you can, CLEP out of it!
The 70th credit hour I've taken at Valencia. The easiest class I've taken. Extremely organized material and clearly explained grading criteria. Tons of extra credit. Tests are fair and easier than the homework. Caters to every learning type: kinetic, visual, oral, audio, etc. She sets you up to succeed. Incredible professor.
She is a very nice professor and offers a lot of extra credit opportunities in class, but she is also very disorganized and she has no respect for the set end time of her class. She periodically likes to end class 6 minutes after it is supposed to end. She also threatens her students with absences if they take bathroom breaks during class time.
She was the worst. The professor was messy, failed me on every assignment because my responses were "too good" and wouldn't give me an explanation as to why. She wouldn't help me improve my grades at all. Had many assignments that weren't on the due date calendar that were "required" assignments. Stay away from her!!! take the class on campus
This was the WORST class I have ever had. She doesn't reply to email. If you have any questions you have to post on a Q&A Discussion board. She grade harsh on everything. She does drop lowest exam grade. If you work ahead of the weekly schedule you will loss points. You have to PASS the final exam with a C or higher no matter what grade you have.
She is very helpful and very understanding i enjoyed taking her course i will take her for french 2. S he responds very well. She cares about your situations and she gives extra credit. Lots of homework.
Fowler is the best online french prof. Her class isnt difficult. PAY ATTENTION to the MODULES section only. It feels overwhelming at first but stick to MODULES bc its the most clear & organized section. She will work with you if you encounter true issues during the semester. I took Fre1 as regular semester and Fre2 summer course. Great experience!
You can tell she very spirited person but Prof. Fowler may be better in person than online. There's consistent assignments every week but it takes a lot of your time (more time than you expect for a French class.) She isn't teaching you, the textbook is, so be ready to spend a lot of your time completing assignments work for this class.
Prof. Fowler is actually really sweet. At first I thought she was going to make this class difficult, but once I spoke to her, I had a clear understanding of her intentions with her students. She is accessible and is willing to help if you actually reach out to her. She's available and gives students her personal number so they can contact her.
I took French to learn a new language, but I was nervous taking it on. Professor Fowler made it easy to learn , and lectures were super fun. Sometimes you think you are reading alot, but her directions are detailed and color coded so that you can reference them quickly. You need the textbook, but the text book assignments help significantly .
I took the class with this same professor. I went from not knowing any french to taking trips to France by myself. It sometimes feel like there is alot to read, but when you realize that its an online class, there is actually just 2 hours of homework a week, the rest is instruction and lecture. She is helpful and understanding if you are struggling
This was such a fun class! She is an awesome professor and has such a passion for France which is infectious! 10/10 recommend taking her.
I had the pleasure of taking two semester with Prof Fowler, or as she likes us to call her Madame W. This is the most sweet, caring, hard worker professor i have taken a class with. I even took her study abroad to France and she was able to get me an internship while I was there. Her impact in my life is still reaping rewards. Must take.
The course was interesting. If you do your work, you get an A.
Want to learn French? She is your gal. She reminds you not to focus on accent and sound like an American, but instead tells you to focus on the language itself. If you do the work, you get an A. Very forgiving grader, and easy going as long as you try. She is very accessible after class. You don't try, then don't even bother.
A totally awesome professor who really helped me sharped my French skills. If you can take her, do it!
The course was pretty easy, the professor is a character. I would definitely take her if you want to be bored.
Taking online was not a walk in the park, more like a jog. Steady amount of work each week. Usually took me about 4-5 hrs, but if campus was open woulda been in class 4 hrs anyhow so not so bad. Gives good feedback with discussions, which she grades pretty lenient. Hides extra credit in orientation so read it all. Some funny stuff not so boring!
Prof. Fowler was an amazing professor in this course. She gives a lot of feedback with details in order to help us (students). She definitely puts in a lot of time and dedication into her classes. A 10/10 for sure!
She is a super understanding professor and will reach out if you're struggling to make sure you remain on the right track. The coureseload is a little heavy in the 10 week course but once you set a schedule it really isn't hard at all. During other assignments she states clearly what she's looking for so you're sure you can achieve a high grade.
She is a great professor that I am happy that I took. Though her class is online, not once did I feel like she could not help me with any of my problems during my assignment or tests. She is flexible in helping anyone who has problems with their work, and can be reached out by email, or phone easily. I am happy to take classes again with Fowler
I personally LOVED this class. I honestly have never felt more accomplished after taking a class. There's A LOT of work, but you get what you put in. She is very clear so be sure to read what she wants. Don't use an online translator. I could even tell when classmates were using it! Great teacher and very kind. I'm taking her again for french II.
I took Professor Fowler for two semesters and I can honestly say that I enjoyed every second of it. I took the online class which tends to be a bit more challenging but she was great help whenever you got stuck and she gives great feedback that actually helps you learn. If you are serious about learning French, she's the one you need!
Professor Fowler is good and a great teacher when it comes to learning french but it is a lot of work and exams and there are no breaks its like every week. Although I finished with a good grade it was hard to get there seeing as I had other classes and a full time job to support myself. Its almost as if she doesnt care. Shes rude at times.
Not sure how these reviews are so good. She is rude and often disregards you unless you post in a discussion forum- where she basically expects us to teach ourselves and doesnt have time for us via email etc. There is no schedule, oral exams and projects are like surprises. Choose someone else if you want to pass French. Not worth the stress.
Took her for French 1 & 2. She is very passionate and caring. I absolutely LOVED both of my semesters with her and really learned a lot. She is very clear of what she wants and expects. She responds quickly to msgs and is VERY understanding. It's a lot of work, but not overwhelming. I will miss this class and would retake her again in a heartbeat.
I took her French class for 2 semesters and I’m just grateful that it’s over. She is such a hard grader, does not explain things properly. Does not provide a schedule so she surprises you with assignments, oral exams, exams, discussions, projects etc throughout the semester. Also takes forever to grade assignments.
Prof. Fowler is a pretty good professor and she does well teaching a foreign language class online! She is very caring if you have any issues or questions and responds in a timely manner. Her grading is consistent and her feedback is helpful. This course relies heavily on the student completing lessons. The final will make or break your grade.
This by far is the worst professor I have had thus far in my college experience. I have never experienced so much stress, anxiety and extreme confusion 99% of the time. She never explains things properly, so much confusion. Do not let my final grade fool you, it came at a great cost. I would never ever recommend her for french.
Very nice professor. There is a decent amount of work throughout the week due each sunday that will take at least an hour and a half to complete. There are a lot of extra credit opportunities that can bring your grade up significantly
Highly recommend. Learning a language online is tough no matter what, but Prof Fowler made the learning as easy as possible. Besides the textbook she gave multiple resources to give us the best chance. She was flexible cuz of the hurricane, caring, and respectful. You are expected to put the work in which is only appropriate for college students.
Highly organized Course Orientation answers all questions Fair and lenient grader Opportunity to resubmit work Awards extra credit Worked with me on deadlines for problems resulting from Hurricane Ian Answered e-mails and phone calls quickly Assigns a lot of work, but how else are you supposed to learn a foreign language Cared about my learning
She is an amazing Professor in the way that she helps you and makes sure that you do pass. This course will help you with any majors. The professor gives credit where they can and they do offer a lot of help. The professor gives a reasonable amount of work. As long as you do all of the assignments and do your best you will pass the course.
She's a bit work heavy but is doable. The major downside throughout the semester was that I wasn't learning much from the lessons she chose for each chapter. The amount of notes I had in this class was way less than what I had with my FRE1120 professor. She was very thoughtful with hurricane Ian and I do appreciate that.
Terrible professor! She always has so much attitude and acts like she does everything even though her most assignments are automatically graded. She will fail you if you use one word that you already know in an assignment because she thinks you are cheating and using the translator. Acts like you only have her class and packs you with assignments!
Professor Fowler is honestly one of the best professor I have ever had. Most professor don't really care that much but she does. She really does care about her students despite never meeting them. Assignemts are always due Friday and they're easy and helpful too.
Professor Fowler is a compassionate educator who is readily available by email and happy to assist. She discourages the use of translators and expects students to stay within the class level. If you know French, working within the class level may be challenging, but Professor Fowler is patient and supportive in helping you work at the right pace.
Prof Fowler was so amazing! I had her for my French 1 class, and I really wish I stayed for French 2. She wrote a lot of information on each assignment and often repeated information to get her point across. She gave AMAZING feedback on each assignment and gave extra credit to those that spotted a mistake. Take her class!
ive taken prof fowler for both french 1 and 2. She gives clear instructions on what to do and how to contact her. She is very sweet and helped me understand where i was going wrong in my discussions . Gives extra credit as well. Textbook is in vhl with weekly assignments . Fairly easy if you keep on track schedule.
Some may classify this course as a lot of work but it is straightforward and not complicated. Only gave 2 projects, no papers and one mini project (which were easy to complete). This teacher gives bonus points for bringing issues to her attention, helping other students and having perfect attendance. I enjoyed taking French with this teacher.
I really enjoyed taking FRE 1 with Prof Fowler and will be taking FRE 2 with her in the fall. I wouldn't say her class was "easy" but as long as you can stay on track, you'll learn a lot. There is quite a bit of work, but none of it is super challenging. Would recommend if you're interested in actually learning French.
Prof Fowler was really amazing. I took her for French 1 and 2. She was accommodating and replied to my emails the same day or the next day. The class itself is about as hard as any other foreign language class. If you are having trouble in this course I would recommend to email and ask for help. She seems to truly cares and wants you to pass.
You don't have to do face to face to see her for Oral Exam 1 & 2, she let's you choose a partner or virtual on VHL. Chapter discussions every week, VHL weekly, one presentation, one project, and final exam. When doing discussions or chap. exam, try not use not even one word that the Chap. hasn't covered or its a zero. She gives extra credit.
Dcnt amount o work, BUT For one simple assnmt she give instruction on the assgnmnt, a modue, and a pdf She writes a 5 pg essay for eacch assignment tht is simpl to undrstnd and they dont all corrspnd to each other, one thng will say one thing and the othr thing would be another, its hard to understand and annying, a kinda harsh grder but she ight.
I really enjoyed this class and the professor. There is a pretty wide range of assignments (homework, oral/written exams, discussions, etc), but feedback is given on almost all of them, and grades reflect work put in. She seems to truly care about students passing and puts a lot of effort into understanding online environments. Great professor!
Professor Fowler is an amazing professor. Like any language course, it'll have a bit of work. Even if these seems like a lot, you'll notice yourself being able to understand basic French at the end of this course. I loved her style of learning, she would always respond quickly, and is a fair grader. Extra credit is also given for perfect attendance
Prof Fowler is such a considerate and caring teacher. As for the workload the assignments are reasonable. Oral exams I definitely suggest pairing up with someone to take them. On the final exam there was supposed to be a 2hr time limit and it was 45 min. Prof gave us options to retake or have our original test graded minus the missing parts. 10/10!
Tough grader will take points off on exam for grammar, missing period, accent marks, capitalization etc. gives unlimited attempts for VHL assignments. 2 oral exams, 3 projects, 3-4 exams plus final and 4 discussions. Extra points for perfect attendance at the end of the semester. Direction can be all over the place but other than that she was nice.
I was nervous about taking a language course online, especially French. The professor was extremely supportive. Half way through the course I was able to have basic conversations with native speakers. Professor Fowler has actually gone out of her way to assist me multiple times. She wants to see you succeed.
Professor Fowler is one of the best professors I've had. Her French class is challenging but super rewarding. She is clear about her expectations and assignments. Her teaching is structured and thorough. It's obvious she cares about her students success. You'll leave with a strong understanding of French and pride in what you've accomplished.
This is the best professor to take French with online at Valencia! I have attempted French multiple times at Valencia and Professor Fowler is the best! Taking ANY online language at Valencia is extremely hard and unnecessarily difficult, however, professor Fowler made the experience great! She cares for students and the material! TAKE HER!
Professor Fowler is tough but fair. She expects a lot of work, but provides good feedback. Unstuck AI and the textbook were really helpful for staying on top of the material.
Explanations all over the place/never clear. Takes forever to grade assignments, teaching is from the book (VHL)was about $200.Says she takes online classes to remind herself what we go through but expects hours of work from you. Doable if your only class, Have to stay on top of due dates everything is so unorganized & makes snarky comments.
Awful experience with this professor. Grades tough, extremely rude when reaching out via email. Made learning French impossible. Created a stressful, anxious environment-would not take again.
Took FRE 1120 in December 2024, and honestly please don't listen to the negative reviews y'all. It is a language course. Accents are used in French, and those who say "she marks off for not using accents/using the wrong accent"...well yeah it's not the right word otherwise. If you put in the effort to learn the material correctly, you'll pass.
Lots of homework activities on VHL but it's for your own benefit. French isn't an easy language, but you're given many resources (both on VHL and made by the professor in Canvas) to help you succeed. There also are many extra credit opportunities to make up for points you didn't get on chapter tests, oral exams, discussions, etc. 10/10 recommend!
Is a nice professor to talk to but when it comes to assignments and exams, is the worst. I've taken her for French 1 and 2 and she has made it difficult to pass the course. Made me take the final in person and if I didn't i would fail the whole course. Takes too long to reply back. DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE WITH THIS PROFESSOR!
I took Professor Fowler for French 1 and 2. She's a really great teacher as long as you communicate! There is a good bit of classwork due but that's as to be expected in an online course in a foreign language, make sure you set aside time to do the work! DO NOT use an online translator, just put in the time. Lots of opportunities for bonus points!
Terrible professor. I truly am not one to rate professor, especially not if speaking negatively. But, I have to advise all my fellow students to stay as far away as possible from this professor. Extremely rude and has undertones of anger throughout each and every one of her announcements-it's almost like she does not even want to be a professor.
Good professor!
I took this for the summer of '25 and lord knows it had me stressed but it was cause everything had to be condensed, but Mrs.Fowler made it as easy she could. Even got on the phone and would tell me to calm down because im harder on myself than she is. She comes across harsh through the syllabus but she genuinely is so nice and wants you to suceeed
The best professor to take at Valencia for French. The language and class can be tough, but Professor Fowler made it a great experience. Please take her!
If you can choose another teacher you should. She was disorganized and passive-aggressive in her instructions throughout the whole class. There weren't that many assignments and they weren't that hard, but Prof. Fowler made the class unbearable. It was also hard to know when assignments were due. The class wasn't difficult, but the professor was.
