Her class format is great!!! Karen, despite her pushiness and her pronounciation of the word "Wash" being converted into "Warsh," she makes it easy for students to know what's on the test. She tells us what's on the test, and gives us
Kaen is an awesome teacher. Her teaching style is clear and organized and you know exactly what is going to be on each test. Not much homework, only like 2 assignments the whole quarter. She keeps the class interesting.
This class was good because for the most part she teaches off of the test study guide, and doesn't do too much that isn't on the test. Not a lot of homework, interesting stuff, overall good class to take
Karen's very straightforward and interesting. She gives us detailed information to allow us to understand the concept but not so much that we feel like we are in chemistry class again. She is very good about telling us what to specifically study for the tests. She wants us to succeed. Tests are difficult but if you put in the study time you'll do well
Excellent teacher, just listen in class, take some notes and review the hand outs and you're set for tests! :D (side note: DON'T buy the >$100 "Perspectives in Nutrition" book that the bookstore says is mandatory for the course, she never assigns anything out of it at all. I bought it and haven't as much as opened the book this whole quarter. She gives you handouts or websites for everything she wants you to do!)
Karen is the sweetest, nicest, most intelligant teacher out there!! i love her!
Karen is great! She is a very talented teacher. She tells you exactly what she expects on the tests. Study for them, and you'll do fine. I highly recommend her! She's a lot of fun, is very warm, and very understanding. She is also very practical about her information. Oh, and you never use the book- it's just extra information.
Read the the post from the date: --- 10/23/05 ---this is perfectly true. (except you do have 1 project from the $100 book, but you can get it in the Library)KAREN is a wonderful teacher.
Got an A in GER, what can I say? Didn't really challenge me, in-class projects seemed silly. Nice enough, knowledgeable I guess. Studied hard for tests but... Aced most/all. Don't remember much of what I learned. You DON'T need the book at all though! Major plus. Great class for non-science careers. Fun take home projects.
Karen is a wonderful, kind Nutrition prof. As has been said, you won't need the book. Attend & study and you'll do well. She's very clear about what you'll need to know for upcoming tests. I enjoyed watching SuperSize Me in class. She teaches on everything from supplements to life stage nutrition. Great wardrobe too. :) Thanks Karen. You're great.
AMAZING CLASS BECAUSE SHE IS AN AMAZING TEACher! she makes everything very clear and you don't need the book! you learn everything in class! just take notes by her study guide and then study! and you get an A!!!! assignments were fun and she is so sweeT!
I took her online class so we relied on the book entirely. No posted lectures to read. Seemed more student guided. If you did the reading, reviewed and kept up on posts you did fine on tests. I only lost points for minor errors. She is sweet and easy to talk to. Info was life applicable and interesting. She is straight forward - no surprises!
She covers a lot of material over the quarter, but does a great job of teaching the material. There is a lot of studying for the tests, but they are not terrbly hard (as long as you study for them). I highly recommend her for Nutrition 150. She is a Fantastic Teacher!
Karen is amazing. She's the nicest, most helpful teacher I've ever had. As long as you study for the tests, you will get an A. She reminds me of my mom. Take her class.
Karen is the best! Love her! I want to be a registered dietician, and I can tell that Karen really knows her stuff. She is extremely knowledgable and knows what she is talking about. If you really listen, you will learn a ton of great information. She is completley no-nonsense and gets to the point. Take her class!
this class was fun, easy, and interactive!
Very straight forward and interesting class. If you go and take notes everyday you won't need the textbook at all. Cute and very nice teacher, but will rush some topics to get through everything. A few homework assignments and projects but they are really simple.
Karen should be the standard by which all other teachers are judged and she actually helps give the material a functional place in your life instead of just fact preaching. I took the class on-line and she provides detailed information on what is expected and has so many outside resources linked to the work you have no excuse not to get A?s if you
she is the best teacher!! she kept the class interesting, and she made it kind of fun. shes very outgoing and understand. I would totally recommend her to anyone.
Good lecturer. Class was fairly easy but she kept it interesting and had real world application of the topic.
This teacher makes the material interesting. Though she lectures mostly everyday, she's really good at making the time go by fast. Attending class seems to be related to good scores, so I highly suggest attendance. She will usually tell you during lectures what you need to know for the test.
Taking class online, hardest and most amount of work I have had in any class. Wouldn't recommend online class. Overly specific, not enough time to complete quizzes.
I'm taking her online class and let me just say, DON'T! There is so much material. She has a folder for each week with all the work that needs to be done and there's like 10 documents of stuff to know and 8 links to go through. The assignments are reasonable but her tests are SUPER hard. I thought I'd really enjoy the class but it's just annoying.
I can't remember the code, but I took the Sports Nutrition class from Karen. She taught extremely well (despite the volumes of information introduced), and grades fairly. Not the easiest class ever, but it isn't too hard to get an A. I was just lazy and didn't turn in several assignments.
Awesome teacher and class! Subject matter was very interesting. Definitely learned something new in her class everyday. She is very friendly, approachable and will answer any questions you have. She gives out outlines (study guides) that cover everything on the tests. 5 exams, lowest grade of those 5 dropped. The final is not cumulative. Take her!
I loved this class! Karen makes material that could be very difficult, easy to understand. There are a lot of independent projects to see how info from the class impacts your life which makes it interesting. She is a fair grader and will work with you if you make the effort. Daily attendance is extremely helpful in succeeding in this class.
Very easy class if you study the exam reviews she gives to you. Pretty much its the test and she will give you the answers in class. There are some out of class projects, but they don't take much time. Just study, and do the homework and you will pass!
Best teacher ever. I love her class. Just study the exam reviews and you'll do fine. She explains how the questions will be asked on the test and is extremely helpful. I ended the quarter with an A-. I'm taking her Sports Nutrition class in the fall. She's my favorite teacher so far!!!!
LOOOOVED Karen. I had her for Nutrition and Sports Nutrition, and she was wonderful in both classes. Just study the exam reviews and go to class, and you'll do great! :)
I took her classes online. Nutrition with her was super hard. She definitely expects you to study every little detail. Definitely college course status. However, I would take her again. She does challenge you.
I took nutrition with Karen and it was extremely interesting and fun. She was a great professor and I learned a lot . It wasn't the easiest class ever but definitely informative and she made class entertaining
Karen was AWESOME. Definitely my favorite teacher here so far. I loved how she gave us so much information, she really expected us to work and earn our grades fairly. Really amazing. She was super helpful and would give the answers to some of the questions in class. She also gave you a study guide that said what was going to be on the test. Easy A!
I don't recommend taking online. Loads the folders with information and it is unclear which ones are actually relevant. Also, tests are very long and worded like a lawyer or politician. Also will doc points off homework if not absolutely perfect. Has too much student forum requirement.
Loved this class! Karen provided so much insightful and real life facts on the subject. It has shown me how important exercise and healthy nutritional eating are. It will change you probably! Exams are totally based off the study guide, but still study!Read everything on the worksheets and projects; she tends to doc points. Take the class in person
she is extremely strict. If you don't like science, don't take her. She is super hard. She expected her student with very good reading skill and smart
She's nice, she tells you everything that's going to be on the exam. Some of the things she says that aren't going to be on the exam are on the exam. Her multi-choice questions suck because if you get one of it wrong you lose that entire point for that question.. Ok teacher. I didnt like her as much. Show up for notes or have friends give you notes
There is a TON and i mean a TON of information given in this class my note cards were as thick as pillow buy the end of the quarter shes sweet and wants you to do well but its easy to get annoyed with this class there is ALWAYS a paper to turn in and so much of the work just feels like busy work i barley scraped by in this class :(
This is really an easy A if you fill out the study guides and use those for the tests. I easily got an A. She does assign a lot of busy work, but they aren't difficult things. My complaint about this class is the content was based on the recommendations from the 1970's. Wish it would have been updated and not based on low-fat, high carb craze.
Karen was one of my favorite teachers. If you turn all your work in and study for exams, you will get a good grade. Showing up to class helps. She made her class very fun.
Karen is the best! Gabrielsen is always trying to help her students understand the nutrition material. She tries to help you anyway you can. If you come to class, pay attention, take notes, and study for the exams you will do well. She does a very good job covering the material in her lectures which are both entertaining and enlightening
Absolutely amazing! She is the best teacher I have ever had! It isn't an easy class but if you show up every day and take notes you will do good!
Attendance is not mandatory, but she would frequently give out assignments during class, which could be easily missed if you didn't attend. Other than that, she's a great teacher. She used to be a hospital dietician, and is now teaching nutrition and sports nutrition. She's very passionate about her field, and nice to those interested in it.
This class is terrible. The way she does her exams is stupid, she changes one word of the true/false questions making them easy to fail. Her exams are poorly done, don't take her class their a struggle. Nice lady! Doesnt know the material that well
Karen is a great teacher! She is approachable, friendly, and helpful. Use her exam reviews because everything on the test is covered by it. If you show up to class, do the assignments (which are easy) , and study the review she gives you for the exams, you will pass the class. I would love to have her as an instructor again.
Karen Gabrielsen quickly became one of my favorite professors at EvCC. Her presentation of the course topics is 100% clear and on point. Also, she is very helpful and experienced in health science (worked in a hospital for many years). Side Note: Fashion sense 10 10
I don't recall having this much busywork since elementary. There are about a thousand files posted each week and I spend the bulk of my time sifting through utter chaos and determining what's actually pertinent. Her documents contain embarrassing grammatical errors and use text in every color of the rainbow. This class has been one giant migraine.
Her lectures are really fun and you can tell she is very passionate about her job. She's always willing to help if you ask for it. She goes over everything that will be on the test and is very clear about what you need to study. Her assignments should be worth more points because they require a lot but her grading is fair.
Hard tests, lots of information to take it for each test. You learn a ton but it can be overwhelming because of the huge amounts of information she requires. Tests: Mostly multiple choice, short answer, match and problem solving. Text book is not required. I bought it and barely ever opened it.
Karen is a really great teacher. A lot of my friends told me it's a hard class. I took it as an online class, so I guess it's a lot easier. We had exam every week about 50-80 questions. It wasn't hard as long as you do the assignment (1-2 each week), discussion board (every week), and the exam guidelines and review.
Karen is amazingly clear and concise. Her lectures are to the point and she covers everything you need to know. If you follow her exam outlines and lecture routines you will be golden. Do all the assignments (there are a lot but they are easy enough). If you can't get an A in this class it will not be because of Karen....! Also just great lady!!
Karen's tests are full of information, but she gives you an exam review that covers everything that will be on the test and covers everything in her lectures; I hardly ever use the book. She's willing to help you if you go and ask her for it. Karen is easily one of the best teachers I've taken at Everett, very funny and very informative.
She's awesome! She is so nice and sweet and is funny too! Her nutrition class is really interesting and I enjoy going everyday! She tells jokes and says funny things to keep you from dosing off like normal classes, take her I recommend it!!
You don't need to read the book. The review guides tell you everything that's going to be on the test - study it and you'll all pass the tests. She gives a few little assignments every couple of weeks and sometimes multiple times a week which are annoying but they're easy. Her lectures aren't boring. You need to show up to class and take notes.
Karen is a great professor and answers the email quickly if you have any questions. Exams for are long, but they aren't too difficult if you know the information well on the exam reviews, take good nodes, answers exam review questions, and you don't have to read the book. I didn't study well on the first few exams, as a result, I got an ( A-).
Some memorization for tests but not much. Her lectures are interesting and apply to every athlete. I highly recommend this class to any person who is in sports or just workouts on their own time.
This teacher gives you absolutely no feedback on your testing. Doesn't give you the opportunity to review your test to see which questions were missed, and does not give you the opportunity to challenge missed questions on tests. States she doesn't want her "tests compromised in the future." Then write a different test like other teachers do.
I absolutely adored Karen. I learned a decent amount of which some I use to this day. As far as the class everything was great, normal stuff. Study, participate in discussions and you'll earn your A. I feel like I could have learned more if I had been able to review my tests after they were graded to see what I did wrong. Doll of a teacher!!
She seems like a good teacher and is nice-but i don't like the fact that we can't review our exams and see what we did wrong. I understand why she does it but seriously. She asks for too much, one question alone would include like 50 billion questions to answer it(not literally but you get the idea). You would def. need to study a lot for the exams
Karen is such a fun instructor! As long as you attend lectures and do the assignments you will do fine in the class.
Definitely the best science class I've taken at EvCC and one of the best instructors I've had. Honestly as long as you apply yourself and do the assignments, you have nothing to worry about. What you learn is very practical and I found myself wanting to learn more after the course was over. Also, she drops your lowest exam score, so that is nice.
Karen's Nut101 class is a class you will work to get your "A" in. She has clear and interesting class lectures and the exam reviews outline the exams that will be covered. The only thing I didn't like about this class are the tricky wording that is sometimes used on the exams. One word can make a whole statement false, so read the questions!
This class was really difficult. The way she grades is very strict, with no room for creativity at all. You either have the right answer, or you don't. The weekly assignments take up a lot of time, and the tests are difficult. I'd recommend printing out the study sheet for each test and writing down ALL the answers so you have them on hand.
This was by far the hardest class I've ever taken. Lots of homework, and too many assignments that were confusing and hard to understand. If you think this is a nice and easygoing nutrition class you better look for another option, because you will end up studying in depth anatomy, chemistry, and biology. Definitely not what I was expecting.
She is a tough grader, even marked off points for certain opinions when answering why were surprised when we got certain true/false questions wrong which was upsetting. Exams are all by the book so read read read. You wont have time to find the answers each time so you need to keep up with the work. Also her exam outlines make the exams look harder
Took a online summer course was very specific about deadlines put took almost a 4th of the weekends of with being unable to answer questions. The entire class was pointless busywork.
Gabrielson is a tough grader and very particular about her expectations. Often times I missed points simply due to how I phrased an answer. Late work, not accepted. Impossible to pass without reading the book. 90% of what's on Canvas appears on tests. I gained a lot from this course but felt like I was trying to win her respect the whole quarter.
Her test do not match the textbook or other readings her test are over an hour long and she will not allow you to see what question you got wrong. I was a 4.0 student until taking this class I have a B+ so far and am putting in some extreme hour all for nothing since her test dont match any info given to us. Class meaden score for quiz is 63%
She is a tough grader, her homework each weeks takes a few hours to finish and be careful you will lose points for wording. Every week I struggled to make sure I did each assignment to her standards. One time she told me I should have made up an answer since my cancer risk had no suggestion as I was at very low risk. Missing points for that is dumb
This is a very fast paced class with a huge work load. She likes everything to be done her way and if not she will grade you down on it. I worked very hard for this class and I still could not manage to get better than a 85%.
NOT AN EASY A! Hardest online "101" class you will take! Each week you have: discussions, disc. replies, weekly assignments (1-2) & weekly quizzes (there's also exams every 2-3 weeks). Very picky & tough grader for weekly assignments (always double check work!) Exams are HARD! They are timed & have mix of MC, T/F & short answer. Quizzes are timed.
Karen is really nice and clearly cares about teaching, but the exams were the hardest I have EVER taken. I don't think I finished any of them 100% because I ran out of time. There is no time at all to finish the exam with all the short answer questions. I would dread exam day every week. SO MUCH STRESS TO HURRY.
Just save yourself some headache and don't take her. She grades with a vengeance, doesn't base assignments on the book so when the exam comes around you have spent 3 hours doing work that doesn't apply to the exam and if you answer milk instead of "fortified milk" or mg instead of 1000mcg(which are the same) you get no credit. WORST TEACHER EVER!
Karen was great. She made herself available to go over tests when I received a lower than expected grade. She's tough, be careful with your labeling and double check your homework. But she leaves comments on why there is any deductions. Make sure you thoroughly read the instructions!
Karen was a great teacher! This class wasn't required for my degree but I was interested. She is a tough grader but she gives a TON of information in the modules to help you succeed. There is a lot of reading but if you follow her study guide and fill it out, you don't need to read in between. She is picky but just follow what she says! Love her.
I took Nutrition 101 with Karen over summer quarter. Although the work load was heavy due to the shorter quarter it was definitely doable. The most important thing is taking the time to study. I took the class online so I had access to notes. Karen provides a study guide for each test- this includes everything you would need to be successful.
This class was definitely one of the hardest classes I have taken before. You take a test every week that takes about an hour and a half to complete each time due to how lengthy they are. Get ready for a big work load.
Hardest online class I have ever taken. Tests were borderline impossible to study for and it was not easy to get a good grade. I am usually an A student and received a B+ in her class. Not easy, don't think it would be much better in person.
Brutally hard online class. The wording on the tests is very deceptive and if you miss 1 part of a multipart question then you recieve no credit for the whole question.
Karen really cared about all of her students, even the online ones. The homework is relatively simple, as well as the discussion boards, but she is very particular with grading. The tests are extremely long and relatively difficult as well, but if you put in the time and effort it is manageable. I enjoyed the class and learned a lot from her!
Learned A LOT of valuable information but, assignment directions are convoluted and hard to read due to different colors, highlighting, underlining and bold fonts. Tests are long and weekly. Discussion boards need two responses to others but the questions make it inorganic to do so. Grading is absurdly hard for a 101 class and I am an A student.
She is a harsh grader and I got marked down on my assignments, but she is clear about what she wants. Use her study guide and fill them out throughout each reading. What is on the study guide will be on her exam. She responds pretty quick too. Also, she is very passionate about nutrition and cares a lot about her students.
By far the worst professor I've had in my college career. I took it as an online class, and it's impossible to understand what she wants from students. She has so many Canvas modules telling you "READ THIS TEXT, this website, but FIRST read THIS! Then this!!" All while the formatting is underlined, bolded, capitalized, and colored. SO hard to read.
I took this class online over Summer quarter so it was a condensed quarter that required the same amount of work as a regular quarter. Karen's formatting for assignments can be confusing at first (lots of different colored fonts and long prompts) but she really sets you up for success with all of the information she provides. Grades really quickly!
Shes is the worst professor at evcc. Her exams are extreme hard and long with little time to complete. She never tells you what questions you missed and why you missed them. She sets up her students for failure and its really pointless taking this class. Take other professors and save yourself from this disaster
Long tests but she provides a very thorough study guide that if you do, gives you all the answers. She writes everything bold, underlined, colored and italicized which makes her hard to understand. Really heavy on the homework with assignments due during the week AND the weekend. I finished the class with an A, but I certainly had to work for it.
She is the best online professor I have ever had. She never took longer than 24 hours to grade anything and she got back to me within about 2 or 3 hours even on the weekends. She is very organized and she makes all directions clear and detailed. She also gives out detailed study guides for every exam.
This is by far the most difficult class I have ever taken, strictly because of the weekly exams. While the study guides provided do help considerably, the amount of content covered in each exam is barely completable in the 110 minute time slot provided. The exams were the hardest I have ever taken in my life. Take ANY other class than this.
if you are worried about your gpa... RUN! Large exams every week. Review guides are provided and somewhat helpful, but questions are worded weird. Assignments can be confusing. Taking her NUTR 101 class online & she tries extra hard to prove that online is harder than in class. I suggest comitting the text book or anything she mentions to memory.
If you want an easy A in nutrition, don't take this class. Karen will make you work for it! On the plus side, she is very organized and tells you exactly what she expects of you from the very beginning. She gives detailed study guides for all exams. As long as you read and do the guides, you'll be fine. Also, she offers extra credit!
The biggest things you should know, 1 - she will always find somewhere to dock your points. 2 - there are 7 EXAMS, not quizzes, EXAMS. 3 - you will cover insane amounts of information and be expected to know it all. 4 - Every paper is full of highlights, different fonts, bolded italicizes and underlined words, very irritating and hard to read
Has very strict guidelines for you to follow, very organized & will get everything graded in a timely manner. Each week youll have a discussion post, 2 assignments and an exam due all based on 2 chapters. She has a study guide for every exam which I found VERY helpful. Her course is HARD, you HAVE to put time in to study. I enjoyed the material
(DURING PANDEMIC) I loved this class! She gave feedback to EVERY single assignment that I turned in. She gives you a study guide and all the exam questions are from there! She drops the lowest score exam. She is very much understandable with personal stuff and advices you!! One of the best teachers I've had at EvCC.
Took this class summer quarter online. The class was very straight forward and very organized. Karen's grading criteria was very clear and gave feedback on all assignments. Study guides were provided and were VERY helpful during the exams. If you complete every assignment and complete the study guide with lots of detail you'll pass.
You can tell that Karen cares a but she is a tough grader because she wants you to understand the material. This can negativity impact your grade if your not careful. There is 1-2 chapters a week, discussion board, Exam, and 1-2 assignments a week.
Karen is a tough grader. She gives you 7 exams (one of which you can drop) that range anywhere from 56-86 questions, and 10-15% of each exam is open-ended. She makes you work for your grade and usually, you are graded fairly. However, her grading criteria, assignments and feedback aren't always clear. Lastly, complete the study guides she gives!
The exams are very difficult, require lots of studying and they are timed (never enough time). Genuinely, take the class with someone else.
She is the worse teacher ever.... well she doesn't teach - everything is online PP.
She gives 7 exams in a 10-week class, which she grades pretty harshly with no feedback whatsoever! She gives 2 lengthy assignments which easily take two to three days to complete from which she will dock off points. there will also be a long discussion board due every week which is also graded harshly. Her notes are not easy to understand as well.
Unclear feedback, if you email her asking for clarification she will copy and paste the same message. Will give you 0s on assignments sometimes if you even do one thing wrong on it. Skip a question? She will give you a 0. Exams? The class average is always between 60-70% and she doesn't ever give feedback because she thinks students will cheat.
Yes, she is a tough grader, and you'll certainly have to work your butt off to get a good grade in this course. The workload is heavy and you'll have several lengthy exams throughout the quarter, but her grading criteria is clear, (VERY detailed but nit-picky) and she does provide a thorough exam review guide.
Class was very difficult. Lots of in depth assignments. Will take off half points. Exams are about half short answer and then one in depth question at the end worth a lot of points. Discussions take about an hour to complete initial post. No feedback on tests. Lot of coursework in this class, however a class you are happy you took after it is over.
Just by reading her name you know what type of human being she is. There are EXAMS (not quizzes) every week, including the first week of class. She gives feedback on everything but will not answer questions at all. VERY picky grader. Lots of assignments due, average about 10-12 hours per week for this class. Do not take for easy grade.
I took online Nutrition for Fall quarter 2021. Karen is an amazing teacher and the times that I reached out to her via email, she replied almost immediately! Yes, there's a lot of information to be reviewed/learned in a week. But Karen provides with a very detailed exam review guide to get you ready for the exam! This class was great, & and easy A!
There were a total of 6 lengthy EXAMS, there was an exam the first week. They are timed and she is a very picky grader. The weekly discussions take hours to do and she will read all of them and point out small things that are wrong and dock points because of it. The assignments were lengthy as well. Would recommend to choose anyone but her.
For online at least the exams are almost every week (7 in total). Weekly discussions with 5-7 parts. Grading is terribly hard. I took this originally as an easy class to take while i take calc 2 but I am having a harder time with this class than calc 2. Only take this class with her online if you want some of the toughest grading and long readings.
100 point exams almost weekly, the classes mean for each test was 50-70%. Does not tell you what questions you got wrong on exams, extremely nit picky about grading. She does grade very quick though which is nice.
I wish I had taken this class way earlier in my life. Professor Karen provided a quick response to every question I had during the whole quarter. She was very reasonable with due dates and extenuating circumstances. This is a very well-organized course. Lots of homework, reading, and hard exams every week. No feedback for wrong answers on exams.
TERRIBLE. I had to withdraw from the class because I couldn't keep up. I have always been an A student but trust me do not take this class if you don't want to fail. I spent hours on discussion points just for her to give me a bad grade. She does not accept late work and doesn't offer extra credit.
Do not take this professor. She knocks down points from the smallest mistake, but her questions are never clear. She has you read so many articles and most of the aren't even relevant. It is best to stay away from her.
Karen is an AMAZING professor! Her online class is very engaging, and there's a ton of cool information you can learn about nutrition in your daily life. This is a science class, so be sure to study properly for the exams, and read the text thoroughly. She gives a very clear grading criteria for discussion/assignments. Great feedback as well! 10/10
This is not a nutrition class whatsoever. It is a test to see whether you can follow her badly worded assignment instructions. Good luck!
If you have a life, if this subject really matters in you career. Take with another Professor or try a different college. This teacher and a philosophy teacher Mike are in competition with students. To much work for no reason and making is based on their feelings and bitterness. Action should be advised on such teachers. We are not in competition
