Good if you don't go to class all the time, since all her lectures are on powerpoint & posted on the class website. I think she's a pretty good lecturer, but she gives out HARD tests.
this lady has some hard tests! very hard. she dims the lights when she does her powerpoints, and i fall asleep in all her lectures. she expects you to know a lot of details with her multiple choice tests! i had a tough time
Very DETAILED exams, but not tricky. She is very articulate and explains clearly. Overall, a very hard but very good prof.
very boring lecturer, hard tests
class is very detailed and lectures will put you to sleep. read the book, a lot. take care to learn the material in depth
Dr. Gerhart is a good lecturer. She is always willing to help students. I went to office hours and lecture and did not have any difficulty understanding her lectures.
THE HARDEST and I mean HARDEST teacher I've taken @ davis.... Probably a lady prof. mack
her lectures are hella boring, and her exams dont seem to reflect what she teaches..they dont seem to be from the book or the notes sometime..ur best bet in this class is studyin old exams and check out AP bio exam questions, she uses alot of em on exams
Despite what others say, not a hard teacher at all. Tests are simply an exercise in knowledge regurgitation. Very approachable and helpful, and a very good lecturer who makes class as lively and fun as possible given the subject matter.
THE driest lecturer there is. She simply reads the lecture notes. Didactically challenged. Her tests are also difficult. But some people swear by her. Be prepared to teach yourself.
This class has to be one of the easiest class I have Ever Taken at Davis. She is so funny in lecture, very enjoyable and she has quite a personality. I would recommend everybody taking this awsome teacher who enjoys teaching. She is GREAT. take her!)
****ty.
Her lectures are boring. She creates a hostile environment. Lights are off and she's pretty dry when it comes to lecturing. Be prepared to fall asleep.
This class had to be one of the most fun since I have been here; I thought the tests weren't that difficult as long as you went to lecture and read the book. She was also easy to talk to about any problems regarding the material.
Gerhart is a pretty boring lecturer and is not very approachable, but if you make the effort she can be helpful in office hours. Be prepared to get a lot of ambiguous exam questions (hint: study old tests - about half of her questions are repeats!).
Definitely didn't learn much in lecture because she can put you to sleep everytime. Her tests questions are ambiguous and random. Even if you know the important details of material still might not do so well on multiple choice.
She teaches this class every quarter. Does she even have a life? It just goes to show that she's extremely boring and has nothing exciting going for her!
shes so dry...and borring...i hate her...you basiclly dont pass the tests if you dont have old tests to study off of...thats not fair...
the most boring class ever. all she does is read right off of lecture notes. notes are online so going to class did nothing for me. the only reason i did ok on some of the tests is because she takes like half the questions from old tests
boring lecturer, just read her powerpoint notes, wierd wording on the tests, and moved a bit fast, but understandable with the book
Very tricky class... a weeder class for all the pre-med students. lots of stuff on the tests is designed to trick you.
good teacher, hard tests... find people who took it before so that you can use their old exams to study.
HARD TESTS! Semi-boring lectures (it's also hard to stay awake at 3pm), very approachable during office hours, and always willing to discuss any problems on the test. The slight curve makes it a little easier to get a better grade. Get old tests...
Very smart professor. DO go to office hours, where she can really show her prowess. You will find her lectures boring, with silly (and 'corny') misfit quotes, as well as confusing and DIFFICULT tests with no curve.
i hate this class stupid.makes me hate biology
This is an easy class...question straight off of previous midterms and her lectures are pretty clear. She does however provide some incorrect info, so if you are looking to go further in bio, don't believe her every word.
Dr.Gerhart is one of the "easier" bio teachers. Yeah, her class is a lot of work, but all science classes are. If you can't cut it in her class then DON'T become a bio or science major. Because I guarantee it, she will not be ur last nightmar
pretty tough tests but the subject matter isn't that hard. she's really tricky on tests and goes through lecture really quick. be sure to look at her lecture notes and her old midterms.
she's a okay professor, her tests are very tricky but she's really not that bad if you study you will do alrite, it's science
Boring lectures, misleading/extremely hard tests. It seems as if she puts no effort into this class at all. Take someone else if you can but if you do take it from Gerhart, you better study your ass off. Plan on not getting an A
She merely lectures off her notes (reads them). Don't take her if you can avoid her. Test questions have little to do with the material (I would invoke fair use on this one). Tests are just guessing games.
She's not as bad as some people think. Getting an A is very possible. If you can't handle her class, as someone else put it, don't become a bio major-- it gets worse!
Not nice in OH, makes you feel stupid, study old tests! If the first few tests go reallly bad, dont worry, I got 2 D's on the first two midterms and got a B- in the class. So don't lose hope. Tests are guessing games, all I can say is study your ass off
Absolutely A Good Lecturer. SHe Is very thorough! I Love it! I learn so much from her class. Tests are very tricky. YOu HAVE TO STUDY FOR THIS CLASS. Go over old midterms also. MY ADVICE: STUDY, STUDY, STUDY, STUDY, STUDY!
STUDY, STUDY, STUDY! There's no way around it. It is possible to get a good grade in this class with the appropriate amount of effort. Reading the book helps more than office hours usually though. Thorough professor in lecture; notes provided.
IM LIKE SO SMART, I JUST TOTALLY GOT AN A IN HER CLASS. TOO EASY.
Excellent Professor!
just study the crap out of your brain.
Test are conveluded and have little to do with lecture materials. I asked her a question about what we should focus on for the lecture, and she responded with "whatever we talked about in class". I knew a person who got a B in 101 and a D in 1A-that shouldn't happen. All around bad professor.
Ouch. She's quite hard on your GPA. Prepare to study insane amounts -- and still get a unsatisfactory grade in the class.
Good prof. Very clear lectures and tests are fair. If you think you can slide though you'll fail. Study, Study, Study
this class is HARDDDD.. be prepared to work your but off and still not get an A. Oh well.. but she really prepares you for later bio classes were you have to work as hard or even harder.. overall don't regret taking her class.. taught me how to work! Learned a lot too. BE PREPARED TO WORK!
She covers and insane amount of material and does not adjust the pace to let it sink in. You can study a ton yet still do poorly in the class. Overall, I can NOT recommend this professor to anyone. Was definantely the worst class I ever had at UCD. Look elsewhere if you want to be taught biology.
LIKE DUDE, OMG, LIKE U TOTALY DO NOT WANT TO BE IN THIS GAL'S CLASS. LIKE TOTALY UNCOOL WITH A CAPITAL U. LIKE, ITS ALL READING READING READING READING, LIKE AND HER LIKE QUIZZES ARE LIKE OMG SO SCANDOLOUS! LIKE, IF U WANT TO LIKE, TAKE THIS CLASS, LIKE TAKE PROFESSOR WHEELIS, LIKE TOTALLY, LIKE OMG
Just study and go to lecture you bums!
Extremely hard class. Tests are very conceptual and no matter how much I studied I still seemed to get a C on every test. Try to do well on quizzes in discussion. I would try to get an easier teacher if i were you because although her lectures are ok her tests are really hard!!
Dr. G is definitely hard, but she is fair and it IS definitely possible to do ok in her class, grade wise. Honestly people, if you are considering majoring in anything bio, she will prepare you for the work load. Just study like crazy throughout the quarter and not just right before the final.
Dr. Gerhart is an excellent professor. Her lectures are clear but fast so going to lecture is very important. To good on tests you need to know ALL the material. Be prepared to work.
Be ready for a tough class. Lots of material to know, so keep up with it cause she moves fast. Her lectures are clear and she puts note outlines online but not enough by themselves. Go to lecture and put some time into studying and you'll be ok.
This was a really tough class, we had midterm every two weeks and each test covers a lot. She was a good professor that she really know her lecture stuff and she tried to be as clear as she could. Her multiple choices are very tricky, you need to know everything precisely; guessing won't help much.
I thought this class was horrible!! She really turned me off the subject! BORING!! If you have the chance take it from someone else!!
I get a B+ in every other class and I end up getting C-'s in this one. WTFFF!!
She is my favorite prof
very tricky tests
Loved this class! She is very straight forward on what you need to know and I thought the materials were very interesting. Yes, she moves fast and her tests are tricky. Just study hard, esp. her old tests, they are so helpful because she uses A LOT of her old questions.
Class is not that bad. Some MC are tricky though. I heard she reuses alot of her old midterm questions. I did well on 3 of my midterms and not so well on one of them. Its cool though b/c I get to drop one.
She is horrible. I'm sorry. Her tests are confusing and disgustingly difficult, and her lectures are long AND confusing. Quizzes every week in your discussion.
great professor! her lectures are clear and concise; if you don't read the book, i would say her lectures are enough to go by on. tests are tricky but fair.
this class is TERRIBLE! her tests are VERY hard, her lectures go WAY too fast, she talks a mile a minute, and you have a test EVERY two weeks on about 6 CHAPTERS. only take this class if you want a low grade. dont be dissapointed when u see your C or lower.
lectures are fast. PRINT OUT THE NOTES BEFORE and just follow along. if you didn't take AP bio, it's a challenge. don't read the book. most of the info is not needed. however, look at diagrams and use it to clarify lecture material. very helpful in OHs. DON'T MISS LECTURE!!!
Good lecture, but tests are always over-complicated and asks simple concepts in the most overstated, unnecessarily confusing structure. "What is NOT one of the many theories that have NOT been stated this year given it was NOT stated today and such." Damn her.
Very tough. You have to be very skilled at multiple choice, and a very hard studier.
She's hard!! Her lectures are clear but fast paced so I suggest putting more effort studying for this class than the usual. It's definitely an experience.
Try to take a different professor for this class if you can help it. You can study for hours and hours and still there will questions on the midterms that you never would have gotten. Try to get access to old exams because she recycles about 50 - 75% of the questions verbatim
shes a pretty good lecturer... her test are killer if u dont know how they work.. try to get as many old test as possible... if u do the class is a breeze.. attend lecture and pay attention to the small details... ie things about specifics
WOW. SHE SUCKS. If you have the OLD tests, your in like flin. If you dont have old tests, you're screwed. It all about the old tests. She's too lazy to write a new test. She reuses like 75% of the questions.
She is so evil. I definitely recommend getting the old tests from a friend or some such because otherwise you are screwed. Her test questions are ridiculous unless you already know what they are. I've never held more contempt for any other prof. GET THE OLD TESTS!!
Gerhart is a wonderful professor. She's challenging, and the tests are very difficult, so study. Her lectures are very organized and clearly presented, but definitely go through the material the day before because she covers a lot of material and the powerpoint moves fast!
She knows her stuff very well. However, she's a very evil teacher who gives you the hardest tests.
She reuses 90% of her test questions so try to get your hands on old exams!! She isn't that great a teacher but her tests are cake if you have friends who've taken the class before.
GET OLD EXAMS. And even then.. tests are still tricky. good professor though.
Just like what everyone else said, get old exams, they are a life saver. Also, she's really helpful during office hours, and she explains things really clearly. Her lectures are really organized, and you can just print it out beforehand and write notes on top of it.
Easy!Read the book, study the lecture notes, review old tests, and you have an A in the class. The class, however, is boring and I fell asleep in 90% of the lectures.
This is a horrible teacher. For her salary, she should write her own tests every quarter instead of recycling them from the book questions. To get an A in this class, just kiss your TAs ass and get the old tests from a friend. SHe does not deserve to be teaching.
This teacher is great. Enjoy her while you can she makes this course more interesting than any other Biology teacher I've met. Her tests are hard but if you study her lecture notes very well and KNOW her past midterms you should pass with an A. A lot of work is required. But she's worth it.
I dunno what yall are cryin about. Just read the book, study, and go to lecture and you'll pass the class with a decent grade. If you keep complaining and falling asleep in lecture, then don't blame her if you fail the exams. She's a very knowledgeable and clear professor. It's up to YOU to get that A.
She definitely knows her stuff. The lectures are extremely informative and I think if you just attended class everyday and keep studying to a minimum you could pull off a B. The book is helpful, but not needed. Her notes are great since she goes too fast to write slides. Her tests aren't that bad if you study and going to class is a must!
i liked her. I'm not a bio major but her lectures were very interesting and i learned a lot from her class =) curve seems really nice too, 84% and i got a B+
Good teacher. VERYY knowledgable. Just don't underestimate her tests, they're tough... but not impossible.
she knows her stuff but her tests are tricky. If you ask her a question during her office hours, she will explain it as if you already have majored in biology. All in all good class take this professor.

Her lectures are usually clear, but dont rely on her notes alone. She purposefully writes them vaguely to encourage you to go to class. One thing about this class...you must go!!! The book is not completely necessary, but it helps clear up holes in her notes. Good professor. Good class!
Her class is a challenge, but if you are a bio buff and plan on attending each and every class you'll do extremely well. A lot of people are not very happy with her teaching, but she is one of my favorite prof and loves it when people take an interest in her class. Take the extra study session if offered, worth it to sit in. will get you an A
this class was terrible. in order to get above a C you need to get old exams because she reuses questions word for word. i pretty much hated her.
This class is very easy if you know the tricks. You MUST MUST MUST find as many old exams as possible, it is the only way to get a good grade. Office hours sucks, she is very belitting but will explain concepts well after she makes you feel completly dumb. Try to take the extra dicussion section it really helps.
Pretty easy class. weekly quizzes. pretty straightforward exams. try the last page first.
Not Good
Her class is not terribly interesting. It's up to you whether you do well or not. If you go to lecture and keep up with the material, you're okay, but she does move fairly quickly through the chapters. Office hours helps sometimes. She's not the best professor, and there's no way around her class but to work hard.
Worst Bio teacher there is. Doesnt test what she goes over in class.
she is a good professor, she just presents her material very dry- that is why she seems kind of boring sometimes...but you will learn a lot from her
if you enjoy getting your @$$ reamed with enormous amount of work, then go ahead and take her. if you want a more paced and step-by-step teacher, take dr. wheelis.
Do everything you can to NOT get this teacher. Her lectures are boring as hell, her tests are really hard, and she's a feminist. She wants to make her classes as hard as she can, cause I think she gets off to it. So in short, unless you want to have a miserable quarter, only take her class if you absolutely have to.
even tho the 1st test's average was a C 74% i guess she felt that was way too high so she made the next text hell. I went from an A on my first test to an F. I would definitely avoid this teacher. If my biochem class in the morning hadn't coincided with Wheelis's morning bio1a class i would have for sure taken that.
Common guys, she's lovely and her lectures are very clear. I can't argue that she goes over material very fast, but it's the reading that you must do. If you don't do the online assignments and reading how are you suppose to do well. Don't blame it on her, she's a good professor!
She knows her biology, but teaches it in a manner that makes it harder and more confusing than it really has to be. Bis1a is a difficult class regardless,so its not all her fault. Her test are worded very tricky. Lots of work and work needs to be devoted to this class. Read the book before lecture, and do the online activities(those help the most).
Lectures are boring and fast. Midterms are miserable.
Her voice was so boring I had to chug coffee before every class to stay awake. She goes through her lectures too fast, and makes the material seem much easier than it is. Her tests have short answer portions as well as multiple choice so you have to really know your stuff.
i have taken NPB101 with ishida and goldberg and I can honestly say that this class is much more challenging than NPB101. her midterms are incredibly tricky and detailed. i would avoid this teacher at all costs. and yes u need to spend at least 3 hours per chapter if u want to pass this class
She has made me dispise Biology. The midterms are aweful and I can not get out of this class fast enough. To her credit though you take 5 tests and drop the lowest one (which means you can get out of taking the final) and your discussion can raise you a full letter grade. Its frustrating because working hard and still getting a bad grade.
Dr. Gerhart is very organized and has extra online assignments that she used to help boost your grade. EXAMS are too DIFFICULT for material presented by her or the text. She likes to be tricky w/q'ns. DOES NOT CURVE normally. TOO MUCH EXTRA WORK for an intro class. Knows her stuff, but exams too detailed compared to lectures & her lecture outlines
Lots of information covered in 10 weeks ,but well worth it. You will thank yourself for taking her although difficult /makes upper division classes a breeze :)Clear, knows material well, take BIS 98 class very helpful, read book as supplement, weekly quizzes,go to lecture, ask ? but she no longer recylces ?'s so don't rely on old exams- Review/Study
NOT reccomended. Knows what she's talking about and offers lots of online resources, but gives TERRIBLE, picky exams. Stands on a soap box and is not a very understanding person. Avoid this teacher; but if you must take her, use the TA's and online resources.
shes a good teacher, very nice in OH. the tests, well they are challenging but not too difficult. Except the free response portion can be very ambiguous and graded pretty harshly. Other than that I'd say this class isn't as bad as people claim, its really not her fault that there is so much material to cover in one quarter
WORST TEACHER EVER! Puts trick questions on exams and there can be 2 possible answers, but only 1 is MORE correct than the other. This quarter she offered easy online**** to boost the grade cause she is known for FAILING 50% of her class. Its lower division, not upper.
WORST TEACHER EVER! Puts trick questions on exams and there can be 2 possible answers, but only 1 is MORE correct than the other. This quarter she offered easy online**** to boost the grade cause she is known for FAILING 50% of her class. Its lower division, not upper.
Great teacher for biology class, difficult ,but well worth it, go to lecture, take notes, read book, online quizzes, don't rely on old tests, STUDY clear, concise, BIS 98 helpful kenny liang awesome, dutton group tutoring, give yourself a cushion b'c final is harder than any midterm study ,review, ask questions, take advantage of office hrs
Good at explaining, but covers way too many chapters for such a short time. Went too quickly through everything which made the exams hard to study for. For an intro class with no curve the tests were too much. The only positive in the grading were the online tests.
She covers a lot of material but lectures very well, using diagrams to explain. Tests are a bit tricky but overall she's pretty fair. This quarter she gave a slight curve. The key to doing well in this clas is having an easy TA. Discussion quizzes are what kills most people's grades. Online quizzes = free points (15% grade). I recommend taking her.
This was the first quarter she used online pre-quizzes, which she seems to think gave her an excuse to make the tests ridiculously hard. She simplified subject matter in a way that just glossed things over, and didn't explain well at all. That combined with her sleep-inducing voice made this class excruciating
Not to hard As long as you do what she saysin the syllabus, she makes the average a C+ so an A- is 86%. Just do all the work she subscribes nothing less and you will pass 20% of your grade is given to you in online quizzes
She is a good lecturer. but at times very anal. I did learn a lot from this class. But it is not worth the work. She makes this class EXTREMELY time consuming.
I hate her she is the worst professor EVER!!!! Totally unfair...nice lady but horrible exams!!! Don't take her...:(
omgosh... plain terrible. dont' take her. tests are terrible. take wheelis. although her lectures are alright, they're nothing compared to wheelis. i would avoid at all costs.
She made me so paranoid while taking tests since there r certain questions possibly having 2 answers but she'll never tell u which tests or which questions have a possibility of 2answers.overall i got 2 80% 1 85% 1 90% on her tests & that equals an A- so getting an A is very possible in her class. i missed the A by 10/1000 points
Worst teacher ever!!! do not take this class...lectures are good but material was not on test her exams are sooo hard and her questions are really tricky. It wasn't how much of the information you knew but how to apply it.
exams are very very difficult. WAY too much material, so stay on top of it.
She's an okay teacher. Pretty difficult, but if you keep up with the work (and there's lots of it), it's definitely possible to get an A. The online quizzes are basically free points if you do them (at least 80%). The discussion quizzes were pretty bad, but they curved them pretty nicely. Just know the material really well, and you should do fine.
HARD exams are really hard. they have questions that are bearly mentioned in the class. print out the lecture notes and follow along cause she goes through the slides really fast. she's a nice teacher, but just really hard
Excellent lecturer despite she goes over the material very rapidly. Very nice and helpful during office hour. Midterms are not easy (a lot of tricks). Overall, it is a very interesting class, I learned a lot from this class, and she is a GOOD instructor.
If you are gonna take bis1a, you'll pretty much end up in her class. There's really no choice. But she is fair. Her tests are hard, but she only tests you on what's expected of you and what she says in the syllabus. Yes, people always fall asleep, but you do learn a lot after this class. She really prepares you for upper div courses.
Gerhart is a GOOD lecturer and rather helpful in OH. Just keep in mind this class covers nearly 20 chapters in ~10 weeks. Focus your studies more on chapters she emphasizes in lectures. However, her tests are definitely hard and require application of the concepts, not memorization of the vocabulary. But this is college so get used to it.
Dr.Gerhartis a pretty good teacher! She explains things very well and is clear on what she expects you to know for her midterms. Discussion is pointless and the quizzes were hard. Sign up for Bis 98 b/c it helps a lot and print out lecture outlines since she moves quickly! hard class but so worth it for upper division.
The class sucked, she sucked, the whole thing sucked! Her lectures were pointless, the quizzes were hard, and the midterms were like what the hell. I mean where does she come off thinking that we only have her class to worry about! She really needs to reconsider her teaching methods, when taking this class, please try to consider other prof.
The class is hard. She is sometimes boring but overall very helpful.
Unhelpful, fast, monotonous lecturer. Get Kenny Liang as a tutor in BIS98. Don't go to office hours with old exams, but get AS MANY of them as you can. Read to understand the concepts. Don't take any other hardcore memorizing classes with Gerhart, b/ your head will become very saturated with info. Time-consuming class, but you will learn a lot.
Her exams are not easy, but they're fair. You have to be able to apply when you read from the book to questions that aren't just simple memorization. Overall, just stay on top of the work and you'll be okay.
I think Gerhart is a good teacher. Even though there is almost no curve, the quizes and discussion help because it is almost worth half of your grade. Once you have Labavich and Shackel for BIS 1C, you will realize how straight forward and clear Gerhart really is. Those two can give anyone an ulcer.
i pulled off with a B. Amy Chen was a super nice TA (which helps ur grade btw). Gerhart's exams were hard, esp her 4th one. Just study old exams to get a feel of her format. DO UR HOMEWORK!
Quizzes are helpful and they pull up your grade, but very hard exams, she did make you think*
This is a difficult class which moves very quickly. Be prepared to have to keep up with the reading or you will be confused in lecture. However, she is one of the best lecturers I've had. I would strongly recommend her. You have to work for your grade, but you do end up learning alot.
she is a good teacher. if you want to take bis 1A, take her. yea, she is hard, her exam really test your understanding of the topic and she got lot of work. class moves really fast, so be on top of things.her grading is really fair, do the online quiz, it really helps your grade, and some of the question might even be on the test. Great teacher
I believe she is a great lecturer. But, she does not test your knowledge on the subject well. she puts in trick questions on exams. and when going to office hours, she is not very helpful. she is on a plantform not of this earth.
She states at the beginning of the quarter that she "assumes everyone has completed AP Biology in high school...", and she means it. Nearly impossible class without prior knowledge, basic knowledge is covered very briefly. Unless you're one of those hard working types, class will be a struggle.
An okay lecturer even though I hardly went. Midterms and the final are not ridiculously hard, but she made the class too time-consuming with online activities/quizzes and discussion quizzes in addition to reading the book and lecture notes. No curve unless you're lucky and managed to be in a class full of morons.
I really liked this class. Her examples are always really interesting and she explains things really well. I learned most of it in high school though, so it was a great review. If you didn't, just pretend it's a math class and do "hw" every day. Print out lecture notes and use the online resources (animations are helpful), and you'll be fine.
Having had AP Bio in high school will make a BIG difference in how easy or difficult this course is. If you've had AP Bio, this is all basically review. Gerhart is an excellent, clear lecturer, though you can also get all the information you need from the book. Exams are very fair, and there are plenty of opportunities to boost your grade.
Notice that the people who gave her a bad review porbably got a bad grade in her class. You shud ignore those reviews as they are quite biased. She is a good professor. Her tests are hard, but far from impossible. Her tests are based off lecture. My advice is to make flash cards after every class and go over them once a day.
Excellent teacher. I heard some bad things about her at the beginning, but she has a genuine interest in teaching and is passionate about her study. At some times I think she is embarrassed because she gets excited over something. I hope to have her again as a prof. Note she is a challenge, but if you find bio interesting you'll do fine.
It's not like she teaches bad. But she covers MASSIVE stuff and you need to memorize a lot of things.. tests and quizzes are both SUPER HARD and she never curves. You really need to study for this class. With the amount of study you do to get a B in other class, you'd get a D
Despite the difficulty in the class, I can surely say that I learned a lot from the class. In order to succeed in the class, you really have to know how to study. I would recommend going to lecture if you have trouble studying. But you honeslty have to work really hard to get a good grade, but you will get rewarded if you do the necessary work.
Horrible woman. Should not be allowed in front of a classroom. The only reason I passed is because the TA knew how to teach.
Gherhart is awesome. Lecture is interesting and well-organized and has powerpts (put online) to go along with lecture. Class website has study guides which are very helpfull for the tests. It is obvious that she knows her subject. My problem came from disc sect-- be sure to do well on the weekly quizes because they really add up!
She's really clear in what she says but it's still a lot of information and the class is still difficult, but she's very fair, but doesn't curve.
Print her lectures and bring them to class. Her exams are based mostly on lectures. As long as you pay attention and review regularly, you should do well. Discussion sections are very important.
The class is difficult because of the amount of material covered in the short amount of time. There is no human that can make it easy without giving free grades. Gerhart is a good lecturer, but she moves very fast. Her tests are rather difficult because of the low number of questions and the detail that they cover. I recommend her though.
There is SOOOOO much material so if you want a good grade you need to study a lot. Make sure you read the book ahead of time because the lectures make way more sense. Her tests were fair but if you miss one question you lose a lot of points. VERY TRICKY tho, so watch out. I'd recommend her, I learned soooo much.
Her lectures are clear and her slides are pretty organized. She puts a lot of information out there during lecture but posts the notes beforehand. She's a pretty tough tester though. Her questions usually test you on multiple topics and force you to extrapolate. 15% of the class was gimme points and another 25 could be gimme depending on your TA.
Dr. Gerhart is a great teacher, and explains things well. However, it is a really hard subject and she covers massive amounts of information. As long as you stay on top of the information and study a lot, you can do well though. I thought this class would be awful, but she made it really interesting!
This is a tough intro class, there is a lot to learn. She is good at explaining and analogizing her examples. There is a bit of anti-drinking preaching, but she's overall a good teacher who teaches a difficult class. The discussion/lab thing is nearly useless though.
Very hard professor. Explained concepts well in class but tests were very detailed. Some of the pictures on the free response portion are blurred and some MC questions require paragraph readings. Would not suggest even though she is a good lecture.
She is very knowledgable about what she teaches, her lectures are organized and easy to follow. There is a lot of material covered, but I found much of it was review from AP. Tests are fair I didn't find this class terribly difficult. lectures are interesting, her voice is soothing though so be careful not to fall asleep!
have to understand all the concepts to do well on exams. explains well. helpful. preview chapters first and listen attentively in class to build more and clearer understanding.
This class is really hard. The teacher is really good, and you do learn a lot in the class...but the exams are super hard!!..very stresfull class, but you do learn a lot of biology. Just plan on doing biology every single day.
I thought that her lectures were very well prepared and easy to understand. She practically gives 15% of your grade for participation and online quizzes (repeatable) because I heard that she used to be on academic probation for failing too many students. Class was interesting, and lab was OK. Her tests were VERY hard for me.
She's a good lecturer, but in order to really understand the material, read the chapter before going to class. If you don't, much of it wont make sense. Tests are hard, lab is pretty obnoxious. If you want to learn a lot and be challenged shes good, but if you're just looking to get a prereq. outta the way, dont take her
she is a hard teacher. You should read both her notes + the textbook. she is very tricky. i got 89.9, and she didn't gave me 90. She is very strick, however the fact that there are 5 tests is really helpful.
I suggest you don't neglect the discussion board and also study for the weekly discussion quiz. In general, this class demands a lot of hard work, but is not impossible or exhausting. Gerhart is a great teacher and my TA was incredibly helpful. All the discussion stuff can really boost your grade if you put some in effort. Don't neglect it like me!
READ THE BOOK!!! If you can, do it before going to lecture. And by the way, DO GO TO LECTURE! She's very knowledgable in her field. But her tests are HARD. Just study, study, study!!!
Read the book! Her lecture notes are helpful but most of the material you'll be tested on will be breifly mentioned in class. Do well in discussion and on the tests and you'll be fine.
clicker questions in lecture for attendance. online quizzes that you can take as many times as you need to. easy points!! midterms and final are challenging. you have to make sure you understand the subject matter, cant get around it. 4 midterms, 1 final. lowest test dropped. quizzes in discussion.
Seriously, I don't see why people complain so much about her. Gerhart's lectures were AWESOME. Yes, the class goes by fast, but it's a whole crapload of info to cover - not her fault! Read the text, go to lecture & take notes, reread the text - & you're good. If you took AP Bio before & had a good teacher, this class is a breeze. ;)
The thing with this professor is that she's so completely wrapped up in her own little Biology world that she forgets that not all students are obsessed with Biology. Gerhart assumes that we know more than we do. She goes through lecture slides at lightning pace. Oh and don't e-mail her. She either sends back cranky replies or doesn't reply at all.
Pretty horrible professor. Completely unapproachable. She knows her stuff, but is NOT good at explaining it. It's an intro bio class and is run like hardcore o-chem, her tests are ridiculously difficult and she seems to make it her goal to fail as many students as possible. I heard a rumor that she was put on probation for failing too many students
Dr. Gerhart's class is NOT as hard as everybody makes it seems. At least half of the test comes from older tests and the online questions. 400/1000 pts are from online/discussion which you all should get. Best way to get an A is to read the book before the lecture and I swear you will get an A
Dr. Gerhart is very nice and approachable and will explain things clearly if you are confused. Her tests are hard, but if you study, go to lecutre and read the book it should be easy to get an A or B. You have to do a decent amount of work but if you like biology its worth it.
omg...it was my nightmare. She is my GPA killer, barely passed it and she made me hated Biology. SHE IS CRAZY! take someone else please
5 tests.. lowest dropped.. first test is real easy.. but the next 4 are very difficult. Tests are 4 pgs of multiple choice.. 1 pg of short answer.. very strict grading on short answer.. many complaints from students. Way too much HW.. weekly quizzes.. 3 short essays.. online quizzes.. but worst of all.. NO CURVE!!!
Professor Gerhart is a very clear teacher, and very helpful in class. The exams are easy and she prepares you for them very well in class. Make sure to do the readings she has on her website. The only problem with the class is that if you miss a lecture, it is kinda hard to catch up.
Very fair, notes online, tests are reasonable, clickers in lecture, A is doable if you READ THE BOOK, take extra optional discussion section if offered (VERY helpful), outside reading and writing sound harsh at first, but most are interesting and you don't need to do them that carefully
Tests are SUPER HARD. She's a GREAT lecturer and professor, don't get me wrong. I understood everything she taught. The problem is just that her tests were extremely tricky. So if you want to learn, no problem.
Not sure what BIS1A is called anymore, but I clearly remember hating her for that class. She's incredibly rude to students and tests with no leniency. Good thing there's a huge curve. Don't raise your hand question guy/girl - she won't be nice to you
This profesor is amazing. Her lectures are very clear and she really knows how to catch your attention. She is very passionate with the subject she teaches. I recommend her if you are someone who is willing to enjoy learning and see the class as a challenge. Her tests are challenging. Really admirable and nice person.
Read the book because she can't possibly cover the material you need to know for the course (kinda like Chem2), but she does a great job hitting on the main points. Gives credit for (easy) online quizzes to pad grades. Discussion reading/writing assignments were long, but rather interesting to those interested in molecular/cell biology.
Brilliant Biologist but horrible teacher. Her lectures jump around and do not make sense. She flies by them at a million miles an hour using diagrams she makes herself with microsoft word. The only way you will pass this class is if you took AP Biology in high school.
she knows her stuff, except she can't exactly teach it to her students. lectures are all over the place and the class isn't as all helpful. she was much better in bis 1a supposedly but this 2a class is just ridiculous. too bad gerhart's the only one teaching this class for some time. can't wait to get out of her class.
She is a very enthusiastic lecturer, but she tries with a new style of teaching. Instead of making you memorize what are the products of what it is more conceptual. She does not use the book, and there are 2 midterm and 1 final. Although the midterms are pretty hard there is a very nice curve. Go to discussion since they give u a lot of easy points
She's a great lecturer and very qualified to teach. the midterms were extremely hard though; the final was easier than expected. Plus, there's a huge curve so don't worry about it.
This class is difficult, there is no way around it. Though I found Gerhart to be a good lecturer, I was still felt overwhelmed at times. The lectures are well organized and interesting, but the charts and diagrams can be difficult to understand. Tests are very difficult and you may do badly even if you know the material. Relax and you will do fine.
She's a really good lecturer and you can tell that she is passionate about biology. Her tests are hard, but if you understand the concepts and go over the slides, you'll do fine. She also drops the lowest midterm score and adds an additional curve. Overall, a good professor.
Do not take Gerhart if you can avoid it. You'll get a good grade (I failed 2 out of 3 midterms and still got an A), but you won't learn biology. Her lectures are confusing, her test questions squirrelly, and she never references the textbook, making it impossible to understand whatever it is she tries to say.
You can tell Gerhart is passionate and knowledgeable about biology but she does not teach it well. She goes way to fast reading off her powerpoints, so it feels useless even go. Her midterms are extremely hard. Overall i would say unless you have a lot of time to dedicate to her class or are extremely interested in primordial soup, try to avoid her
Worst professor to learn from! Her slides are as confusing as it is useless. She jumps around like CRAZY, and you'll see the same slide 5 times not knowing what its importance is. It's almost impossible to relate one thing to another as there is absolutely NO transition. Her wording on tests are so vague and confusing! She likes to trick people!!
She makes me sad. Dry. Way too fast through her slides. Makes Bio no longer fun and interesting. Not my favorite teacher, but not terrible either.
Not a good teacher at all. Uses clicker points in class to make attendance to lecture mandatory, but refuses to post ppt slides up before class, and won't go back a slide in class if students are confused. Same slides appear about 5 to 6 times per lecture. Only good thing is she drops lowest test score Textbook is draft of a book she's writing.
Her MC tests are tricky-- not to the point where it's like "ah-ha good thing I looked that over at the last minute"-- more like "what point did she never bring up that she expects us to deduce from this ambiguous question..."
She is extremely confusing and i would not attend lecture, but unfortunately she uses clickers for attendence and it is mandatory. Tests are extremely hard. Your discussion grade helps a lot. I failed all 3 midterms and failed the final and still got a C in the class. Basically a horrible professor, but you will get out alive!! Don't worry!!!
Exams were always confusingly worded. Her "txtbook" is really broad.Better off getting a reference txtbook so you at least understand what's going on. Uses some q's from old exams sometimes, so do them. 3MT optional final. All worth 100pts. Not really much of a curve, so don't rely on it. Uses clickers as attendance.
HORRIBLE professor! I dunno WHY her English is so bad, but I NEVER understand what she's asking for in her super long confusing questions that may or may not contain parentheses within parentheses. It takes a couple mins just to comprehend what she's asking and another few understanding the answers! I usually fail her tests, so it's a GPA killer
she killed my interest in biology. used powerpoints in lectures that went way too fast and diagrams were too complicated. test questions were super confusing.
Clearly, some prefer to be shorthanded by having an easy class. What's the point of being at a university if you're not up for the game? Though Gerhart's exams are difficult, her level of organization, clarity and interest in the subject matter are among the best I've encountered at this university.
Definitely worst class of the BIS 2A series and a horrible professor.
Seems to rush, doesn't take a breather from her red pointer. 60+ slides (posted only 10 min before class) in 45-50 min with continuous talk is not constructive. Barely enough time to copy diagrams AND info verbally mentioned. Book is her own, expensive (even though it's plain paper, black and white!), lacks clarity and detail.Vague. Is passionate:)
This professor is definitely not a good choice! You have to waste around 90 bucks on the textbook she wrote independently from the common ones used by other professors. What come even worse are her exams! And it's not the material that's getting you down but the way she phrases the questions, they are so confusing!!Avoid her if you can!
She is one of the worst teachers I've had. She unclear in lecture and her tests are rediculous! She goes too fast in lecture and heaven forbid you go to her for help, she shoots you down. Not a good professor, AVOID HER CLASS! And to add to her magnificent teaching style (and HORRIBLE metaphors) her book is over priced and not a good teaching aid.
Despite what everyone thinks, I think she's a great prof. Very clear in lecture, and if you think she's too fast then listen to the podcast! She's also very passionate and knowledgeable about bio, so don't discredit her for a bad grade. BTW, you can't get below a C in her class...it's curved. I would def recommend her over any bis2a profs.
She's a good lecturer in that she knows her material, but lacks in caring about the students. Her lectures are clear, but I recommend reading her book before each class in order to fully understand what shes saying. Her test are hard and conceptual. Knowing the material is not enough. Good thing is that you get to drop a test. Good curve.
The material to learn is VERY easy, but her tests are hard because she tries to trick you. Sample question: what is a cell? a) D b) right answer but not the one i'm looking for c) multiply D and A d) all of the above except one. e) f, but here is no f. On the plus side, average is a B-. I got an A, but knowing the answer is not enough. Its concepts
Her class is difficult, but allows the brain to connect different branches of the imaginary tree in our brain.(If you've had her class u know what i mean.) If people can't think critical of the subject matter then whats the point. Yes, her book is expensive, but there are other alternatives like buying a different text book.
Her class is difficult. To succeed in it you need to study both in and out of class. The lectures are mandatory even though she posts podcasts because she asks questions in class. I would recommend her class because I came away knowing a lot more than I came in with.
Well it's Biology. Don't expect an easy class. Her tests come somewhat off of the practice tests she gives out, but she WILL try to trick you. My suggestion to people taking this class is to read the chapter she's going to go over in class BEFOREHAND, it makes a ton more sense since she goes through slides FAST.
WORST CLASS EVER! Gerhart is an intelligent person, but she does not know how to teach. She crams 2+ hours into an hour lecture. She wrote her own book because she didn't like the common biology books, and it was a load of bs. It gives a summary of what we are to learn only for her to again summarize it. The class is useless.
Aweful teacher and even worse self-written text book. She shoves a two hour lecture into one (seriously, did the podcasts... it takes two hours with notes) and she's really rude if you go into office hours. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Her tests are written to confuse you on what she's asking not to test your knowledge. Learned more in section than from her
Her tests are difficult but lots of questions are similar to the practice exams (beware! she rewords the questions read very carefully!). Taking the Bis98 review class was helpful and you should do the problems out of the back of her book (quiz questions come from there sometimes). Review lecture notes before going to discussion.
This is a terrible professor, the least helpful that I have had thus far at UCD. She does not explain the material clearly. I get all of her clicker questions correct and get Ds on the exams. Her exams do not show whether or not you have learned the material she has gone over, they show whether or not biology is your whole life. TERRIBLE!
Worse in the world. Davis should not have her. Really, OMG. Worse professor I have ever seen. Useless work, essays, summaries, readings. Her textbook is not helpful at all. It's lame. I heard she was on probating for failing students. Honestly, worse classes I've taken.
I gave her a bad rating before, but now I'm rating her again because I realized the material she covered was really useful for upper div. BIS. Her book/material becomes VERY useful later. Her class was hard and a pain, I got an A and came out feeling like I learned nothing, but you'll have a good background for classes later.
Professor Gerhart is a bad lecturer. Her book is poorly written and contains many grammatical errors that make her contradict herself. My interest in biology still remains high, but my mindset for the integrity of the top scientist of this field has greatly declined knowing that the someone would issue a doctorate to prof Gerhart.
Her lectures and book (written by her) are fairly easy to understand and well organized, however her tests are confusing, poorly worded and very difficult considering the resources you have at your disposal. She is all about teaching you to critically think, but her very poorly conceived test questions only make you second guess yourself.
i dont want to rant about her but i cant say nice things about her. hey class is hard. on the exams, there are more than one right answer, the correct one is what she things is the right now. i hate that. i knew everything, seriously, everything, but still i cant get by her exams. if you can ignore her, its probably a good idea. all rumurs are tru
She's not as bad as everyone says she is, i feel like everyone goes to her class expecting the worse. There was a FATTY curve in the end which was awesome, and her real tests were a lot like the practice. A good grade is attainable if you really try, DOn't take this class if you're not interested in bio or if you don't feel like doing any work.
I expected the worse coming into this class
I expected the worse coming into this class because of all the bad ratings here. If you study the textbook, do the problems in the back, and think about what you read on a deeper level (rather than simply memorizing it) you'll get an A. If you work hard you'll get the grade you deserve.
i haven't even seen her yet, but her text book (written by her) consists of approx 150 pieces of unbounded white printing paper paper and is sold for $88. it can not be found anywhere but the uc davis bookstore and there are no used copies. ridiculous.
I had her last quarter for BIS 2A and did not do very well. However, some students managed to get B's in her class but how that happened is beyond me. I still have her textbook from last quarter for sale if anyone is interested.
I USED to loved biology, until I took her class. She makes things a lot harder than it needs to be. The study groups she offers are a lot more useful than actually going to lecture. Writing her own book is totally unneccessary because it's total crap. Also, she's not exactly approachable when you ask questions after class.
Her exams are hard, I have to admit this. However, she really makes Biology an interesting subject for me. Although she gives out a lot of assignments, but those assignments are meant to help us the students to understand the materials. She just wanted us to leave college with a skill, plus she has to spend time on preparing all those resource for
Do not take this woman's class. I have had many "hard" teachers over the years but have never despised a class as much I do this woman's. Unlike any other science class I've had, 90% of it consists of ridiculous busy-work. Her tests are insane. She started the quarter off by telling us that we don't know how to think. Her textbook is crappy.
Dr.Gerhart makes biology interesting. Many students claim that her exams are difficult, but students tend to say this when they study the last minute. Biology is more complex than what was learned in high school. Biology is difficult, therefore the busy work that is given allows students to efficiently learn and not just memorize.
horrible teacher.
I like her as a person. But hate her class. I took it in the spring and got a D and i'm retaking it with her and i'm still on the verge of failing. She is tough. I kinda like her class. She is very enthusiastic. But she will kill ur grade. She has like no curve, i hope she curves this time.
If you think this class is "too difficult", I think you might need to change your major, maybe to communications. Learn to SOLVE PROBLEMS and not REGURGITATE information you don't even understand. Comprehend what you read and the exams will be easy. Shes a good teacher, I learned ALOT. Recommended highly.
There is a lot of busy work, but they help lift your grade. The exams are somewhat difficult, but some of the problems are like the practice exam. I did poorly on the exams, but did all of the other work and I got a B. Midterms and Exams are only worth 40 percent of your grade. Class is fair.
Gerhart is one tough prof. If you want an easy class, please don't take her! She gives a lot of work, but they help you understand the concepts and get better grade. Many complain about her, but I don't think she's that bad. I got D's on her tests, but I ended up with a B in the class with no curve. Just do all the work! Plus, her style is awesome!
I disagree with the previous comments. I attended every lecture & discussion, got good/decent grades on all my assignments but didn't do too well on exams which account for nearly half the grade. The class average on midterms was about 65% and there was NO curve. 3 essays, weekly discussion assignments, clickers, & in-class assignments? Avoid her.
Warning: this class takes quite a bit of effort. It took a lot of my time. Anyways, Gerhart is a good professor. Clear lecturer, podcasts and looking over PP slides helps. do her review probs in her text book. you'll be writing essays, mini-essays, concept maps, doing discussion activities. lots of busywork, annoying. but busywork helps your grade.
Gerhart is absolutely illiterate. Her textbook is rubbish and she cannot even spell 'already'! The class is extremely easy to get a B in. 60% of the course work consists of busy work, which everyone gets full credit for. The class average was a B while the average for the tests were a D. Whoever failed is obviously not very bright.
AVOID THIS PROF. AT ALL COSTS!!! She gives IMPOSSIBLE amounts of busy work (as mentioned by other reviews)and it is impossible to get an A!!!! I recommend you to drop her immediately and choose a better BIS teacher like Goldberg or Shaffrath.
Nightmare. There is A LOT of writing. She lectures too fast for you to take full notes. Test questions are tricky w/ some answers partially right. Assignments you do have to match her opinion. I went in to office hours & i felt she didn't care about me at all. She feels really condescending & it was upsetting ): . Clickers for attendance credit.
Studied for hours on end just to end up with a C. I don't recommend her at all! >:|
Relatively easy to get a B in the class since most of the points come from basically showing up to class and doing the 1 minute essays and mind maps. Unfortunately you have to use her textbook, which is borderline inappropriate - typos and missing pages galore. Overall, very unclear and a lot of writing for a biology class.
Very easy class. Just pay attention.
Not a really bad professor but if you have an old biology book, keep it handy because the way she explains the concepts in her book are really bad. Luckily I had some biology background otherwise it would have been a really rough time. Also expect alot of chemistry!
Fail. End of story.
The class itself isn't that hard, but she really needs to take some teaching lessons...
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS, she makes us do too much, an essay each week and every three weeks we have to essays due in a week. Quizes before every lecture, she never answers emails, expects us to be only taking her class, we have other classes and hw, she assigns too much work that doesnt help with biology, i dont think i've learned anything in her clas
More writing than an English class! Short essays every week, occasional mini-essays in lecture, essay-style article summaries every week, and two big peer-graded essays. There is plenty of guidance--answer all the questions clearly and you'll be fine--but it's a pain. Not tough material, but tons of work. Clicker Qs = attendance.
Its almost a writing class with a few essays and a synopsis every week, which gets tedious, but they are graded relatively easy and she gives you all the information. The only difficulties I had were on her tests where she tends to make questions tricky. As long as you dedicate a good amount of studying, its kind of easy.
She's amazing. Clear lectures with an overall very organized structure for the course. Over half of your grade is out-of-class assignments. So your grade really depends on how much time and effort you put into it. Take her class. There are so many resources and chances for you to well, so take advantage of it!
She's good at teaching the material to us,but she gives us a lot of weekly assignments and essays to do. The way the class is structured, going to discussion and lecture is mandatory. Her tests are tricky sometimes because she puts a few conceptual questions that need to be thought out.Overall, her class is easy as long as you do the work and study.
After the first week or two the class became a lot more interesting, but the ridiculous amount of busy work really got old quickly. Tests are only worth 40% of her grade
This is a very tough class; however, Gerhart is a really good teacher. 60% of your grade is based on assignments so take advantage of that. Study hard, look over quizes, review questions, and old exams, and you will be fine. If you plan to put the effort, then take Gerhart, otherwise you will be miserable. Again, the class can be really tough.
Yes, Gerhart has very hard exams but the way she grades is very generous. 60% are assignments and 40% Tests. My first exam i got a 33% and The second i got a 66%. Then the final i got a 60% and got a B- in the class. You do have to do alot of work but find someone that took the class before and see their assignments. Overall a good professor!
She's a great teacher but her tests are really tricky and the CPR (calibrated peer review) essays are kind of unnecessary. After all, your peers grade you (and some of them grade HARD... even the TA's grade easier). Overall, I wouldn't recommend anyone taking her.
Awesome professor. I Like the way she structured the class. Exams are hard, you really have to understand the material, but overall I enjoyed the class.
TO ALL: This class made me dumber. Some people are not meant to teach. It's all busy work and you get nothing out of it and no time to focus on your other classes. Biochem and NPB were way more meaningful and the assignments were applicable. Sorry to say, but Gerhart is pretty incompetent. Trust me, you'll be sorry if you get stuck in her class.
Nothing but busy work and unstructured and scattered resources. She wrote the text book as well, so it's not exactly great. Let's put it this way: after being in this class I might as well still believe that "magic" runs the universe, since I learned little to prove otherwise. Be prepared for Daily homework.
Gerhart is a hardworking prof that loves what she does. Her class is hard & there's a lot of busy work but it's completely do-able.People just need to stop being lazy and put some effort and they will pass.DO THE ASSIGNED READINGS BEFORE CLASS! If you do, you'll have no problem with lecture. She is a great prof and I recommend her.Effort= grade.
LOTS of busywork, and a curve that will kill at least half of the class. The average for my class' final was a 65%. So many people got this score that a 61% was a F, while a 69% was an A. Only class a curve has ever hurt me. Easily the most expensive class I've ever had for books and PRS clickers - two of the most useless and overpriced items i
Most ridiculous class I have ever taken. She wrote the textbook and she references things from other chapters that we had not read yet. Her exams are cruelly difficult and she flies through the lectures not giving us really any time to read, listen, and comprehend what she is trying to say. TRY TO AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
The textbook is very confusing. There are tons of work. If you are stuck with her, get the works from someone who already took her.
IF you are taking Gerhart's class and other hard classes, be sure to have enough studying time for all of them. Otherwise, DON'T TAKE HER.
You will learn an incredible amount in this class, and many of the discussion essays are on really interesting topics. In that sense, she is a great teacher. However, if you aren't the type to attend class literally every single day, your grade will suffer. I would have had nearly one full letter grade higher had I gone to every class.
She is a very concept-oriented prof; you'll walk away with great understanding rather than mere facts. Independent learners may find there is too much busywork, but that busywork is easy and makes up a large portion of the grade, bumping the class average up significantly. The tests are hard, but doable if you make the effort to truly understand.
IF I WANTED TO TAKE AN ENGLISH CLASS THAT'S WHAT I WOULD HAVE SIGNED UP FOR. Annoying class, so many useless papers, clicker questions. Just going to class was a chore and the online homework was a pain.
DO NOT TAKE GERHART. She says she's trying to get you thinking on a higher level, but honestly she's just trying to trick you. Her questions are worded so that there are multiple right answers, but you can only choose one. She goes way too fast and way too in depth in lecture. Her tests are insane. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. seriously. for your own sanity
Sometimes certain concepts are hard but if you ask her when you're unsure, your answer will get answer. As long as you pay attention and try; you will get a good grade especially since a large portion of your grade is based on assignments (making it easier on your grade). Overall, she's not as bad as people say she is. Take her if you want to learn
A little unclear, but better than other teachers. Not very difficult at all. I'm doing pretty well. Should get an A.
Take Gerhart if you want a solid background in biology. Yeah, it's a lot of work. College is a lot of work.
Teaches using ppt slides and tests are like the practice. She knows how to teach, unlike Comai. Reiterates concepts in lecture, online quizzes, and discussion - makes them easier to understand. Sure, there's more hw for this class than other classes, but if you don't want to do the "extra" work, why are you in college?
apparently on probation from school for failing classes! She doesn't teach her students, loves to make you sweat!Doesn't prepare you for her tests. Gives excessive classwork that only gives you a headache. Can study all her lectures & homework in and out and still fail her ridiculous tests(Av.was D or below)should go back to school to learn to teach
Buy her book that she wrote because there is bound to be unrelated questions on the test that appeared in ONE sentence in her book. Teaches what she thinks is important, goes fast over key concepts in class and then expects you to think on her level?? Discussion is waist of time only way to pass is to do ALL the busy work cuz wont pass her tests
Its not the "work" that is the problem...received A's on every homework, test, synopsis etc. its how much this busy work did not prepare you AT ALL for her tests! Therefore its a complete waist of time. Dont take her
the "work" is not the problem...received A's on every homework, test, synopsis etc. its how much this busy work did not prepare you AT ALL for her tests! Therefore its a complete waist of time. Dont take her
I thought she was a pretty good professor, and her expectations of us were completely fair. The "busy work" makes up most of the grade, as long as you get it done, it'll be fine. The tests are almost exactly like the practice tests she gives us, and are very doable if you really review the stuff, because she values understanding over memorization.
Yes, it's a lot of work, but what do you expect? It's college! Also, unlike many others, apparently, I thought the articles for the synopses were relevant. It's not like they were about completely random topics. They actually dealt with what we were learning, so... And she does go fast, but that's what the podcasts and slides are there for!
A good professor to take if you dont perform well on exams, because her homeworks assignments are worth a lot and make up for the midterms. She posts lecture slides online which are helpful when studying for exams. Make sure you do all of the textbook readings. Also the actual midterms contain a lot of questions from the practice exams.
Super fast lecture, hard to keep up. Tests are tricky and very wordy. Gets some questions from textbook she wrote. Hard class with a lot of busy work. Synopsis, quizzes, concept maps. etc. Be sure to attend class regularly. No curve!
I do NOT recommend Prof Gerhart. She lectured too fast, breezing past slides without allowing time for the info to stick. She requires her own textbook, which is absolutely terrible (typos, pages out of order, etc.) and thinks waaaay too highly of herself. Towards the end of the quarter, I was definitely ready to leave and never look back.
lousy professor, little to no help inside or outside class. Be prepared to help yourself or find a nice TA
She is clearly very committed to teaching, and actually helping students learn rather than memorize. Yeah, you have to do some homework (gasp!) but it's an decently easy A if you pay attention and use the study guides before tests. Don't bother buying the text, you can't sell it back and I never even used it.
Lots of busy work that doesn't really help you. She'll rant on about "higher learning", but that's clearly an excuse to put questions she didn't lecture about on the tests. But, she's a pretty clear and decent lecturer. You'll learn what you need.
She may know more than you, but for certain knows less than she pouts herself up to be. She does a horrid job of conveying information through her lectures and her constant stream of busy-work does nothing to improve comprehension. I'd expect this from high school - not a university level course.
SHE HAS A LOT OF BUSY WORK, the class is DEMANDING. if you have all the time to read the chapters and do all the other assigned busy work take the class bc dont get me wrong its all very fascinating. BUT IF YOU DONT HAVE THAT TIME, IT WILL FOR SURE, I MEAN FOR SURE TAKE YOU AWAY FROM YOUR OTHER CLASSES
Dr Gerhart isnt that bad of a lecturer but the organization of her class is weird and tests were difficult. There is weekly homework, but it wasn't that bad and it's a good grade booster. I personally didn't like how the class was structured, but that's just me. If you have to take Gerhart it's not as bad as some people say, but it's not the best.
Dr. Gerhart is a professor who really cares about her students. However, she fails to succesfully convey information clearly to her students. It is a lot of self studying. The busy work makes up 56% of the grade, so it is really easy to get a B in the class. But really have to perform well on exams to get that A. There's hardly a curve.
It is pretty much impossible to fail this class if you do all the assignments that she gives you. The assignments make up 56% of the grade, 44% exams. So if you don't do so good on the exams, there is no reason to panic. The assignments make up for most of the grade. The busy work is not that bad. its a great help for your grade.
Gerhart is not the worst teacher but also not the best. Busywork definitely helps your grade, but it is annoying sometimes. Tests were ok (I got A's and B's). The problem is she sometimes oversimplifies things and has her own words for certain things that are different from the UC Davis textbook so she isn't always very clear.
It's only been 3 weeks into her class and I'm already annoyed with the useless amount of work she requires. The work does not help with comprehension.
Honestly Gerhart is not as bad as everyone says she is. I read the other comments going into her class and i knew it would be challenging with all the work she gives. But its 60% of your grade and its easy. the test are a bit challenging but doable. She's clear and straight to the point. I recommend her if you can handle the load.
Gerhart knows what she's talking about but expects everyone to be on her level. The work isn't too bad. Be very clear and concise on the multi-format portion of her tests because a very strict rubric is used to grade it. Not buying her book puts you at a disadvantage because she teaches more from that than the book used for the entire Bis 2 series.
Took this class 2 years ago. Now that I've taken my upper division biochem classes, I understand what gerhart textbook was explaining. She is thoughtless/dumb to think that people with no ochem background can understand a simplified version of biochem. This method of teaching asks for sheer memorization and absolutely no understanding.
These people are crazy... Dr. Gerhart is GREAT. This is an intense class, and she requires a lot of work, but you get a lot out of it. She goes beyond the subject to teach valuable critical thinking skills. I am so glad I ignored the reviews and took her this quarter. If you want to learn ALOT, this is the teacher for you.
I recommendher to everyone. If you are serious about a career as a scientist and critical thinker, take her class. It will benefit you
If there is any chance that you can avoid taking Gerhart, DO IT. She is an okay lecturer, but the material is so obscure on her tests that even going over her textbook and lectures don't help. Furthermore, she assumes you know the material as well as her and (especially when I took bio freshman year of high school) it is difficult to keep up.
The BEST professor i have had at UCD HANDS DOWN!!!! I don't know what all the negative comments are about, i honestly wish i could have her as my professor for the entire BIS series. I have learned SO much in this class, no joke. I would recommend her to anyone and everyone :))
Gerhart is a passionate lecturer, but she expects you to work your butt off for this class. She moves quickly, but if you pay attention and take notes it's doable. There was so much busy work I literally did not have time to do it all (I was taking 3 other classes with writing requirements), so I couldn't get an A in this class.
umm what? If you gave her a happy face you are obviously a bio major or some sort of freaky genius. Her exams are so hard! And she assigns way too much busy work so forget about having time to read the book or take any other classes. She sucks.
Very very good at lecturing. She is really passionate about the material, and making sure the students really understand it. She is veryy approachable, extremely helpful in office hours. A LOT of busy work, however, so you have to dedicate A LOT of time to this class if you want to get an A.
She is a nice professor, really open to help during office hours. She lectures really well, extremely enthusiastic about Biology and what she does. Her tests are hard, but possible to do. Her class offers much busy work, but it's an easy way to boost your grade. Exams are 44% (2 MT and 1 Final) and busy work is 56% of final grade. Work hard!
Extremely useful during office hours, her exams are tricky although she did cover all the material found on the test. She is very helpful and nice. I would definitely take this professor again, you will definitely understand biology.
Her tests are extremely difficult especially compared to other bio tests from diff professors. I like how the busy work is 54% so there is a high chance of passing but the tests are just too difficult. She doesn't curve either.
I've graduated and Gerhart was THE worst professor I had during my 4 years at Davis. I started this class with no knowledge about Bio. The last time I had studied Biology was for my GCSE's (and the curriculum was very physiology based). So I new very little about DNA, and didn't even know RNA existed. Prior to the first lecture Gerhart (to be cont)
requires us to read and answer middle school level reading comprehension question on a hypothesis that RNA may have originated before DNA. Having no previous knowledge on the central dogma, I did not gain anything from reading this paper. Throughout the quarter she has you do busy work like this, that will not enhance (to be cont)
your understanding, unless you have solid background knowledge. This is because they are convoluted and don't get main points across. Lectures were slow paced and fail to present the concepts simply and directly. Learnt nothing and ended the quarter with a B+. Had to work 4x as hard for As in BIS101-103. Moral: AVOID.
Professor Gerhart goes out of her way to help her students, and extremely helpful during office hours. The lecture slides are great study material. Her tests are generally easier than the other bis professors. There are a few tricky questions, but doable. She gives a lot of busy work that makes up about 50% of your grade. It is not hard to pass.
She was one of the BEST professors I've had at UC Davis! I took her during summer session with another 4 unit GE and was able to get and A in her class. The lectures are long so it's easy to not pay attention but if you reinforce with podcasts you'll be solid. Some of the questions on her tests come straight from the reading quizzes!
The lectures didnt always go with the lab. She talks very fast and no one asked questions very intimidating. We jumped around a lot and almost nothing was from the book. Rent the book fore sure. Also she never answers your emails and she stated out loud to a lab table in class that she really liked because they never asked qustions. Very rude!
