she's a very nice person, but doesn't really explain things in class. She goes through the material so fast and it's hard enough to begin with

Imagine someone that basically cuts you down with a fake smile. Couldn't understand anything that she was talking about. Just read the book.
the worst professor i have ever had. who hired her?
NOT HUMAN, Hanus, unrealistic, definately would not take any class taught by her.

I do not understand why she has to be entirely hard all the time! It does not make sense to me at all. Do not take her if you have a choice!

This woman gives killer tests and when you ask a question, she makes you feel like an idiot by turning it around on you, providing no help at all and oftentimes, leaving you more confused than you were to begin with.

I didn't learn anything in her class....I was lost the whole time! She is horrible!
CRAP...she is HARD!!! I mean H A R D!!!...she is a real nice person in daily life, but in class....OMG...KILLER....NEVER EVER EVER TAKE HER...PLEASE listen to what I am saying!!!

The hardest class of my life...tests are impossible, I think she teaches in arabic bc I don't understand anything. Take this class in summer school somewhere else!!! She is nice though and that makes me even more mad! rahhhhh
She runs through the material like she is in a race to get to the end of the book. She answers your questions with questions. She thinks it's the class's fault when the class (of about 120 students) average on an exam is in the mid-40's.
Dr. Guzman is a great teacher. The problem is that the rest of you people do not want to study for her test. Yes they are hard; however, it is possible to make an A in that class. I am! By the way who ever said that life is easy!!!!!

She is a very nice lady, however the material covered in this class was difficult. I did end up with an A, but I believe she must have curved final grades a little, as I had a D at midterms. Take this class though before Microbio with Thomas!!!

She is a very intelligent person, but to intelligent to teach a undergraduate level class. She needs to teach graduate courses because she we do more good there. She is very unclear and

i think that if you have no life at all, like dr. guzman and the people getting a's right now in her course, then good for you, for the rest of us, who do try, try, try, try and try, and still fail.... good luck to all
she ****ing sucks ass thats that
I think she is a very nice person, but she teaches on a level that is beyond me. I am working so hard in that class and feel as if I am not getting anywhere. She is very hard, but a nice person
who is this happy about cell? Nobody in their right mind. She could not teach a fish to swim if she tried. She is a scarry person who I never want as a teacher again. If she is anywhere on your schedule.....death is soon to be upon you!
She is definitely intelligent, I am not. Wonderful classes if you can grasp it, but don't fall behind. She is a very nice lady with a big brain. Good luck!
I would just like to say to the person who thinks that she is a great teacher that you are a retard. The reason that her class average is failing is because she cannot teach. You are not smart....you kiss major butt! Thank you!
3.8 GPA and first F ever... enough said...
Heck NO!!! Dont get near her!!!....She is hard as Hell!!!....If u want to fail and get ur GPA lowered...than go right ahead and take her....Cuz u will cry all along!!!

If you can get around taking her for this or any other course, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, TURN AROUND AND RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN!!! No, seriously, I think she knows what she's talking about, but no one else does. Bad professor with horribly unorganized notes.
she's awful, unhelpful, very difficult and don't care for her any q's alright, don't give time for a q
Well I just received Test # 3 back, and it sucked just like the rest, this class really is hard. I don't care for the class nor for the teacher teaching it, TAKE IT SOMEWHERE ELSE, PLEASE!
I would like to thank you Dr. Guzman, now that I've have taken your class, my life has went to hell, and for you Campbell you've just lost money because I won't be back
worst teacher ever!!! she gets thrill out of returning ALL your failing tests. do not take this course under her if any way possible.
D-O N-O-T TAKE THIS CLASS at Campbell, with K. GUZMAN. If you have her as a teacher you WILL FAIL. You will feel STUPID, UNIMPORTANT, and she will make you think and say very hateful things. Shes the devil!! She feeds off your torment!
She's super-smart and she teaches on that level. It's a tough class, but she's a nice woman.
This lady is evil, evil I tell you. She's sending us all in hell meaning we'll be seeing her again real soon. Campbell please for the mercy of God hire someone else, we'll praise you.
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS AS LONG AS DR. GUZMAN IS TEACHING. TAKE IT ELSEWHERE PLEASE SO YOU WILL KEEP YOUR SANITY!
I HATED THIS CLASS WITH A PASSION!!!!..the teacher is mean and doesnt offer any help and trys her best to make the class as hard as possiable!!
worst
Weird Al expresses pure delight in pointing out very confusing parts of her tests [which we all failed]. I only passed one test and was curved to a C - some indication of the average grades in her class (which she had to curve up to avoid reprimand).
She is way too indepth when it comes to biology, and her enthusiasm is annoying

She has a rep for being extremely hard (and it is), but she offers alot of help, and wants to see people learn. If you do the work, and study her online resources you should do well.
She should sell her lectures as bed time stories.
I really learned alot from Dr. Guzman. I am in Pharmacy school and the foundation that she laid has prepared me for my classes I am in now. I agree that she was hard to understand and test under.
Dr. Guzman is a good teacher who has gotten a bad rap. As long as you aren't lazy you should do well. The online practice tests and homeworks closely mirror the exams. Study them and you're sure to get an A!
She tries to help her students but at times can be very un fair- her tests are HARD HARD HARD you have to listen and pay attention in class, and STUDY if you want to make a decent grade.....she is always smiling tho
most of the time you can ignore the book and pass. i've found that instead of the notes assisting the readings, the readings in the book assist the notes. so in her class, read. if you depend on her alone, you will not do well.
She's an awesome teacher! Tests are tough; but if you study and practice the online tests you should do fine. She has an open door policy which is extremely helpful if you need further clarification!
She is a terrible teacher. She explains things harder than necessary and confuses herself. I will never take a class with her again!!
Dr. Guzman is a good teacher. Basic Bio with her is relatively easy and straight forward. Cell is another story. By the nature of the class the material is very hard, and you must study a lot and read the text to do well.
Dr. Guzman is one of the nicest teachers at Campbell. Cell is a tough class, but I have an "A" right now. It is possible. People just have to stop wasting their time complaining, and study!
Class could be a lot of fun and interesting but...
I've had her practially every semester, and she is, though tough, a great teacher. Study, and talk to her if you need help, she is always willing to give it.
guzman can make any subject hard and complicated. all her tests are application problems so u have to really understnad and not just memorize
She should stick to research.
She is very tough. Tests are very difficult and detailed.
She is Satan, and whats with the hair?
never again!!!
Very nice person, but nice doesnt help your GPA, alot of studying required to even understand what she is talking about!! Explains things on a level that it could be taught on, on a such easier level!!
sucks
DO NOT Take her, she is so hard..when you first walk in the classroom she seems really nice, but she doesn't even cares about her students, you can really mess up your GPA if you take care..so again take it somewhere else..
SHE'S HORRIBLE!! STAY AWAY!!
This class is pretty hard, definitely not for the faint of heart. Expect to do lots of work, which may or may not get you a good grade.
she is ridiculous.you could take her class, get an A on two tests and a B on the other before the final and still have no chance of making an A in the class. not fun. not worth it if you don't have to. Teaches things on too high a level for undergrads. but is still a nice lady.
your intelligence will show in this class. people that complain and fail are generally the people that lack it.
This Class Was Truly Awful! I Spent Hours Studyin', Took Notes Before During and After Class, and Still Only Walked Out of There w/a "C"! All I Can Say is...She's Your Only Option, so Goodluck!!
sucks. very hard and very unclear. very nice person, but that doesnt help your grade now does it
You are all very harsh. What do you expect from a brilliant professor? I think she is one of the most difficult teachers I have ever had. However, it is very clear what she expects, perfection. Sorry to inform you but....at this level...it is also what you should expect from yourself. She is very brilliant let her teach you.
It's true what they say, she is nice. However, she the class is pretty hard. Quizzes are constantly popped on the class, the tests are pretty difficult, and she sometimes seems a little eccentric.
If your smart you can pull a C without studying. BUt if you want higher you need to study.
She is so very sweet! And really cares about you as a person! She is just very bright and hard. She wants you to learn. Lots of quizes but take them seriously and you will do better in the class. Definitely too hard to get an A
Very sweet. Her class is hard, but not ridiculous. I mean not everyone is cut out to be a science major. Suck it up and move on ppl
This class truly is difficult. It will definetly ruin your plans b/c of study time. It is the most challenging class I have taken so far but it is not impossible to make an "A" b/c I did. You MUST read the book, period. And even though it is extremely difficult you will learn massive amounts of important information.
The thing that bothered me the most about Dr. Guzman's class was that she was never very helpful or willing to explain the course material to you if you are struggling in the class and approach her outside of class with questions about material covered in lecture or for extra help.
I am a senior chemistry major and had Dr. Guzman for Cellular/Molecular Biology and I have to say that she is in my opinion the most brilliant, structured, and helpful teacher that I have had a Campbell Univ. Most say she is hard and she is but her classes contain difficult subject matter. I made an A with a reasonable amount of studying.
This women knows exactly what she is talking about. However th way she teaches is above the average student's head. yes this is Campbell not your ordinary school but it leads many students to drop out because of her classes. But if you are a bio/pharm major you will have to take some form of here classes
She is an absolute genius!!! She inspires people to study science. I have never learned more from a person in my life. For people who complain, I hope you are not science majors because it is just going to get harder from here. She is also very nice and really wants you to learn it. That is the important thing. The grade is not as important as that and if people spent more time trying to like the subject their grades would improve.
Her exams are brutal! I am sure you have been warned about that already! But my suggestion is to go an talk to her and let her know you care about the class and what you learn even thought you may struggle with the material. She is very understanding and if you are nice and show her you're trying she will help you out at the end of the semester.
Very nice lady, but her grading is merciless. She's very approachable, however, and I strongly suggest you go see her outside of class b/c she's more receptive to questions there and she gets to know you.
Dr. Guzman is a hard teacher she demands alot from her students and Cell in itself is a challenging course but if you read the text and study more than the night before you will make an A. I absolutely loved this class and think she is a total genius cell is a very interesting course if you just listen. Dont believe all the lies about her.
I think Dr. Guzman is brilliant and knows everything about everything in Cell,BUT I don't think she can teach. She teaches directly from the book and doesn't expand on anything or break it down for us to understand. She doesn't make the class interesting either. She doesn't seem to take how her students do. She says she does..but I don't see it.
Lectures are not very interesting, but Dr. Guzman is excited about what she teaches. She is very willing to help students, however, her class is difficult. Reading the textbook does not help or hurt you much. To get an A, you just need to review what she went over in class each night. Then when tests come remembering her notes are easier.
Brutal teacher...If you need help, you might as well get tutoring because she is not friendly and doesn't explain things well. You better study a lot, because when you think you know it, you find out that you don't. Very smart, but above our heads.
Dr. Guzman is not an "easy" professor, however you will learn a lot from her classes. I had her from Intro to Biology, Cell Biology, and Anatomy and Physiology, and I feel very well prepared in the biology field. You will have to EARN your grade, however she is very helpful if you make an effort to get that extra help!
Lectures are a waste. She does not do a good job at explaining material. Her grading is very subjective, thus making her tests unfair.
I'm sure Dr. Guzman knows her stuff, but she is incapable of teaching it to others. You learn absolutely nothing in class. You either have an A or an F. Review sessions by TA's are more helpful and informative than her lectures. Campbell needs to have another person teach Cell!!! Even the professors have said to avoid her!! What's that say?
Campbell, Please hire another teacher to teach cell. There is a hugh difference of knowing the material and teaching the material. She has no idea of getting students to understand what she is saying. Horrible teacher.
Dr. Guzman is a genius, but does not know how to dumb down the material for a student to learn it well. She teaches like she's teaching a graduate class at MIT instead of an undergraduate class at Campbell University. I had to drop her class before the first test! Only problem, she's the only person who teaches Cell Bio at CU. Sorry.
I cannot believe her rating is this low. Dr. Guzman does a great job with Cell & Molecular Bio. I am continually amazed at biology majors who fail this class because they don't understand that you may have to read something more than once. Great course. If your a science major TAKE IT.
I agree with every, she is hard. I had to drop the class before my first test because i was afraid it was going to drop my GPA. Campbell needs a new Cell Bio teacher!
Extremely difficult class. Study resources are lacking and tests use multiple answers for multiple choice and you must choose all that apply. She is the only teacher for this course which is crushing to students as currently at least 50% of the class is failing!
It's a very difficult class. I am usually a straight-A student and I am worrying about passing. She is the only one who teaches this class at Campbell which completely sucks
Dr. Guzman is VERY intelligent but she is also very nice. It's true that the class is one of the most difficult undergraduate classes offered at CU. I had to retake it to pass but she is very helpful if you go to her. Most don't pass without a lot of help but it's required for Bio majors so good luck.
I think Dr Guzman is a very nice person, but is not the caliber teacher the students need. The information is easy, but is overwhelming. If her tests were more straight forward I think students would do better, but they are not. I am glad that there is finally another teacher offered in the upcoming summer session. It really is not fair to only h
Here's the truth about Dr. Guzman: you have to come to her level. She won't stoop down to you. There are plenty of resources, and it's all very crucial to biology and even chemistry. I wish I would have put more effort in and gotten an A.
She's nice, but intimidating. There is a lot of information. Tests are very hard.
Dr. Guzman is diffiult but is honestly one of the sweetest women ever. She is intimidating but its because she demands the best of you. Her teaching is very clear but test are not always. The wording and style is super hard. But definitely see her for help and she tries to do all that she can for you to understand. Great caring lady, Hard teacher.
Dr. Guzman is a very sweet lady. However, if you think that you will get help outside of class from her, you thought wrong! She will answer your questions with questions. The class is very hard so you must study her power points over and over and it's crucial to have a good lab instructor- Buhrman is easier than most!
She teaches on a graduate level course. Seriously. My 500 level class was easier than her 200 level. She isn't clear or helpful either. Nice lady, just bad teacher
I wish I could choose a bunch of the tags to describe Dr. Guzman. She was the hardest professor I ever had, but she was amazing. When I took this class sophomore year I was not thoroughly prepared, but she is always willing to help. Go to her office hours, email her, talk to her after class. She wants to see you putting in the effort.
Not a good professor at all. She isn't clear on what you should learn for exams. She gives you way too much info to sift through. She doesn't break down the material. Exams are impossible. She uses trick questions. She isn't helpful, even if you approach her. This class feels like it was made for people to fail out of the Biology program.
Here's the thing about Cell. You can understand what you're talking about in the class but when it comes test time the test questions are vague and EXTREMELY hard. Dr. Guzman teaches a class that shouldn't be too difficult at a graduate course level. She has no idea how to dumb down what's she's talking about. Campbell really needs a new professor.
Even though she is very smart, she is heartless. She almost seems to enjoy making things so hard until no one can pass the class. I attended every single class, attended every single help session, every extra lecture opportunity and did every assignment and she was not willing to give a single extra point. I was a Dean's List student until her.
This has to be the hardest class I have taken to date, BUT the key to passing is to not let the horror stories freak you out. ASK FOR HELP whether that be from Dr. Guzman or from any of the lab instructors. READ YOUR BOOK EVERYDAY. I'm serious. Read something cell biology related every day to get this stuff soaked in your brain. Good Luck!
She loves what she does, I just don't think she's a good teacher. She expects you to already know everything before you show up to class, I learned more from my tutor and other students. DO NOT take her for lab. She grades ridiculously hard on lab.
Dr. Guzman is a horrible teacher. I'm amazed she is still working at campbell. She is the worst, if you have a choice go for any one else. Seriously, absolutely worst teacher I have ever had!
This isn't an easy class, but if you pass it you actually know the material. The class was really fun and informative. The class did drag on once in a while, mainly on rainy days, or days I had a test before class.
If you want to do terrible in Cell bio, take Guzman. If you want to do good, take it during the summer. Started taking it with Guzman in the spring and failed the first test after being able to take it home to do corrections. Dropped it after that and then took it in the summer with a different teacher and made a high Bl
Trick questions, overall lack of clarity for what is expected on tests, and vague grading policy for short answer questions can all be expected. Real kicker is that when i went to her office on 3 different occasions she sent me away because she was "busy". She goes out of her way to make the class harder then it needs to be. .
This class is not impossible, but a lot of people will say so. This class was definitely challenging, and the tests really make you think. But it has done a great job preparing me for upper level science courses. I would say that this class requires a bit more effort, but if you are willing to put in the work you will do fine.
Not clear on instruction, but inspects you to know everything and basically read her mind on what she expects for assignments. GPA killer.
Worst Class Ever taken. Majority of the class cries in their sleep due to this class. She doesn't teach. Your GPA WILL DIE!! Take over the summer. She is a nice person but as a teacher NOPE!!! Also there is no SI, but S2. Don't know what it is ask a cell student.
She is very nice. Really not a bad professor in terms of trying her best to help us understand the material. However, her tests are extremely difficult. You may study for hours on end and feel completely comfortable with the material and still end up making a C on exams. Many trick questions and makes a relatively easy class extremely difficult.
Hardest class ever. I went to every SI, every exam review, and her office multiple times and still did not do well. You can stay up all night studying and know every single topic but her exams will still trip you up. I am a bio-pre med major with a very high GPA and this is the worst I have ever done in a class.
Class isn't as hard as everyone says it is, although the open ended questions on tests were a bit tricky because she is one of those professors that if your answer has just the slightest vibe of being vague, she will count off for it not being specific enough. She expects you to learn the material and I really enjoyed that.
Cell Biology is definitely a challenging course. Dr. Guzman seems to target it towards preparing Bio majors for what they would see in grad programs. This means she covers a ton of information and all of it is fair game on exams, and I do mean all of it. Labs are long. Schedule in a light semester. I got an A but my Calc grade suffered.
Dr. Guzman means well, and she is a good professor. However, her tests are very challenging, and most people do not pass them. But if you put in the work and study, study, and study, you should do well. Her lectures are essential to your understanding of the material! And it's a good study habit to draw out the processes with all the steps!
Nice/intelligent person, but not so great at teaching.
Dr. Guzman was very nice and wanted to be helpful but really wasn't. She was hard to get a hold of in her office a lot and always had people waiting so you didn't have time to ask lots of questions. I failed the class with her because I wasn't just taking cell. Took it over the summer and did fine and learned a lot that is helpful in other classes.
I respect Dr. Guzman's high expectations. She doesn't make it easy on you b/c she wants you to truly learn the material and I can appreciate that. However, she goes above and beyond to make a 200-level bio much harder than it has to be. Every little detail is fair game and the exams are very difficult/next to impossible. The only C I've ever made.
I took BIO201 back in 2015 and failed the course. I transferred to UNCW and am now covering the same material in my BIO465 (Biochemistry) class that I did in BIO201 with Dr. Guzman. I still have the ppts from BIO201 and they're nearly identical to BIO465 at UNCW. BIO201 will prepare you as a biology major, but you need a solid foundation.
She expects far too much in an undergraduate 200 level course. She is inconsiderate of students need to balance other course work on top of her own. She is a very intelligent woman but her teaching is not helpful. She can also be condescending towards students who display a genuine desire to learn - very discouraging.
Even as a lab instructor she's just as much of a nightmare as you'd expect. You won't get any help from her during the Unknown Project, she marks off for even the slightest vagueness on the lab quizzes, and you most definitely won't be able to visit during her office hours without there being a line of students. Failed the lab and switched majors.
Answers won't be handed to you. She'll walk you through the concept and help you make the conclusions. Keep up on the lectures and reading BEFORE class. Tests are on concepts and effects rather than memorizing terms. Very friendly. As long as you keep up with the work and turn in all the required items, you should be fine.
This class will give you nightmares. You will be up all the time studying for this class while the grades for your other courses drop. Be prepared to watch a 3-hour powerpoint every week on top of balancing out all of her other work. Everything she says is fair game on the test. Failed every test and lab practical. Dropped the class changed majors.
NEVER EVER would I take any of her classes. This is my first ever horrible grade. GPA KILLER. This 200 lvl class should not be this complicated. It is a prerequisite for biochem and biochem is easier than cell. Everyone takes this class because they are required to. It is a REALLY big shame that she is the only professor that teaches this class.
While she does everything she can to help her students, I think she expects way too much of them at the level of this course. Extremely complicated topics combined with her test style makes it extremely difficult. Do not recommend taking as a freshman.
She teaches as if this class is an upper-level graduate class. This course is required for most majors. She made simple high school biology very confusing. I would never take another course with her.
She made me hate biology. Before her class I had a huge passion for biology. Avoid her class if possible. She seems very sweet at first, but can be very rude. She has a terrible teaching style.
Awful teaching style and not clear on her test
I would never recommend her to anyone, she teaches this class like I am a bio major even though it is a prerequisite class and baic leveled. She's super strict and doesn't help her students much. The tests are very hard, usually not much of what you learned in class, more difficult things that she expects you to know. If you have her, drop it.
I would not recommend her.
She can be very rude and condescending. Her teaching style is very difficult to keep up with. Her test questions are very poorly worded. I would not recommend her.
She does not care about her students or how well they do in her class.
I did not enjoy her class in the slightest. Everyone in my class complained about her. What was own her test she barely talked about. She can be very condescending. If at all possible I would take another professor.
Alright. I tried to give Karen the benefit of the doubt. I went into cell giving her a chance. But now? I have never felt this type of stress in my entire life. If you can, please, PLEASE take at another university. Karen is so condensing and rude that it makes my blood boil. And as a plus, she will never answer any of your questions. Ever.
Honestly, you have to mentally prepare yourself for the absolute worst! No remorse to fail a student no matter the participation they put forth or the amount of time spent in office hours to grasp the material! Have a bad habit of over complicating a question asked and better yet, leading to more confusion by not answering or using smart remarks.
This class can be very difficult, and you will have to put in a lot of time and a lot of hard work if you want to do well. Dr. Guzman can be helpful when answering questions, especially in office hours, but she expects you to come prepared. She will not simply answer a question without knowing that you can elaborate on what you are asking.
If you want to fail any biology you take at Campbell, then take Guzman. Our 1st test in cell the whole class failed so she allowed us to do test corrections. Ill be honest, I worked with a classmate, used book, internet, etc & still only made a 50!! She is rude during class & dont bother asking questions unless you want to feel stupid
She is the worst professor you will have! She enjoys failing students. It does not matter how much you participate, study, or go to her (limited and useless) office hours. She overcomplicates everything from her questions, to her tests, to her labs. If you score remotely well on something, she will find a way to make sure you fail the next time.
She makes you work for the grade in her class. Her class taught me how to study effectively. Spent most of my semester in office hours, lab, and S-squared. She wants to push you to succeed. Don't listen to those who say it's impossible, it just requires a lot of hard work and time. Had interesting content that is helping now in upper bio classes.
This course requires at least 15 hours or more per week outside of class. If you cannot commit to that then I suggest dropping the course. Her tests are not clearly worded and she does not give enough time for the free response portion of the exam. She makes everything harder than it needs to be and she grades harshly.
This class was not easy. Hardest class I have ever taken and I was only a sophomore. However, it is possible to pass. Do NOT rely on the PPT's for the tests. Use lots of online sources and the textbook to supplement what you "learned" in class. The difficulty level of her teaching does not match her tests at all. The tests are much harder.
This class has made people change majors. Dr. Guzman makes it way too hard to be a 200 level class. She does not accommodate for her students even in a pandemic and the workload is so heavy that I have to neglect my other classes. And even then the work hardly pays off. She is extremely condescending as well
I was warned that this class was hard and thought people were exaggerating, but I promise you they are not!! Her fail rate increases every year and no one at Campbell cares. This class was physically and emotionally draining. If you take it with her, do not have a heavy load and if you can, take it somewhere else!! Trust these reviews!!
The hardest class at Campbell without a doubt. I studied constantly every day and I still only made a C. Be prepared to do in-depth research on the topics and know every little detail. She makes extremely difficult tests and teaches this class like a 400 level class. Good luck.
This class is as much about getting students ready for big challenges as it is about learning Cell/Molec. I'm an MS 1 in medical school and this course has a similar level of complexity to it. My ability to succeed is in part because Biol 201 helped me realize the amount of work success would take. If you're aiming for grad school, take this class.
VERY tough grader. Half of her class dropped by midterm. She is PhD in Biochemistry so you will not receive any slack whatsoever.
very harsh in grading labs
I read many reviews before I got into her class and I figured I would be okay since I always did good in my extremely difficult classes and was able to do extra work in all of them easily. This class is not the case for that. Hardest class I've ever taken. Nothing she says in class makes sense. Make sure you read the book if you get stuck with her.
Yeah -no. I had to drop her as did over half the class. Spoke to a med student who had her when he first started and he dropped her. Spoke to a PA who graduated over 5 years ago and she had to drop her too.
Very hard class but designed to test your ability to understand concepts versus memorization. People who are complaining havent yet realized the amount of effort required to get a good grade or have not figured out how to study effectively. These people will look back and realize they likely could have attained an A in this class
Be prepared to study a lot. Go to office hours and read chapter before class. Do well in lab to help your grade. Take a different professor if you aren't taking upper level biology classes later but if you are, doing well in 111 will help you. A good grade here at the end of semester will make you feel good. She gives multiple extra credits
Guzman is kind and extremely knowledgeable about what she teaches. However, if you don't already know a lot about biology, it's going to be difficult keeping up. Granted, college biology is complicated on its own, but I've found that in order to actually comprehend the slides or what she says you need a prior understanding of the terms.
This professor sucks the life and happiness out of you. She expects way to much, acts like a level 200 class is a 400. First time I have ever gotten a C. Made me deeply depressed during the entire semester from the amount of stress and anxiety. Had to start taking medication for it. We had 2 quizzes and an exam all due the same week. Ridiculous.
This is one of my favorite teachers on campus. Everyone gives her crap, but she is super nice and a great professor in reality. If you were one of the people who gave her a bad grade, you weren't made for the medical field (or any field) because this is what life is like. Half of my class dropped out because they weren't smart. Quit being babies.
One of the best professors at Campbell! Really knows her stuff and cares about her students who care about their grades and truly learning the material. Lots of bad reviews from kids who still have not realized how life works. Luckily, they'll NEVER be doctors! Take her and get an A. If you don't get at least a B, forget about med school.
After seeing some rude reviews from Spring of 2022, I wanted to say that almost no one was confident in their A this semester. Just because you didn't do well, it doesn't mean you aren't fit to be a Dr. In my opinion, the LAST thing the medical field needs is rude, unempathetic people. yikes.
please do yourself a favor and read. it can be the book or powerpoints but do so before the actual class. This is an assignment-heavy course that ties in with participation and attendance. When you start struggling, please for the love of god; go talk to her and ask questions. Her answers can seem kinda aloof and hard to understand but just ask.pls
Cellular Biology with Dr. Guzman was the hardest class I took during my undergraduate studies. However, it prepared me for Biochem and for my Medical School classes. a different non-professional Cell Bio course makes sense for people not pursuing advanced degrees but if you're pursuing a DO, MD, PharmD, take this class.
Dr. Guzman needs much work in terms of organizing and direction. Dr. Guzman also needs to understand the differences between introduction courses and 300 courses. With all this being said I recommend not taking her you will most likely fail. As the class average was a 55%. I recognize science classes aren't easy but this was ridiculous. Stay away!
She makes a 111 class much too difficult. One time, we were doing test corrections and we found an answer on her test that appeared wrong according to the textbook. Instead of admitting her mistake, she told us we were wrong, and claimed that she would "email the editor". She can be condescending on occasion, and is not very accomodating.
Dr. Guzman attempts to teach a 111 class as though it is a 300 or 400-level course. She purposefully attempts to confuse students with her test questions and is very unwilling to discuss test corrections or our grades throughout the course. Such a large number of students fail her courses that her career has been put on the line numerous times.
She was disrespectful at times and I did not always feel supported in this class
The rumors are true. I had to retake it in the summer and made a B by the grace of God and studying with just about everyone in the summer class. Focus on much more than knowing the material, know how to apply it, those web diagrams are good at showing connecting ideas. With this begin said, it gave me a great work ethic for future classes/life.
Dr. Guzman's difficult reputation is not something I worried about until I took her class. She is simply not versatile in her teaching style, and not very willing to work with you if you need additional help. Would highly recommend a tutor. Very unclear with what she wants you to learn and is a tough grader. Very disappointing.
Dr. Guzman is a great person, but in my opinion, a horrible professor. This is a mandatory, 200 level biology class and she is the only one that "teaches" it. She doesn't teach the material in class, instead you are required to watch her recorded videos and answer questions the whole class period. Best advice is take a light coursework with it.
She is the sweetest person but a horrible professor. When I dropped her class and changed my major I was literally leaping around. Her class is incredibly hard to pass and it stresses you out so much because there are so many things to do within the week. But her lectures aren't very good. She used class time as a way to do group work.
Professor Guzman's BIO111 is certainly challenging, but with the right approach it can be very rewarding. The material is tough, so staying on top of the readings, attending class, and utilizing resources like Unstuckstudy are key. She's knowledgeable, but can be tough. Overall, a great class for students looking to really learn biology.
this class is hard for a reason she sets you for success but her classes are not for everyone. READ the book so your prepared to participate in class. PAY ATTENTION there are somethings she says are wrong in the book and will affect you if you don't pay attention. LEARN you will have to learn everything on your own outside of class, class is group
She gives you slides that she uses in class, but if you weren't at the lecture they are useless for studying. She teaches the 100 level course like a 400 level one and has no extra credit. Read the book BEFORE class, and study it like heck. If you don't put everything into studying, you won't pass. She is also a VERY harsh grader and doesn't curve.
She overcomplicated IRSL, an easy course. Assignments were scattered everywhere, from the booklet, blackboard, a website she made, & more. She wanted our class to submit assignments in a particular way, making me get Ds on simple tasks. She gives good feedback on assignments, though. GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS! If you're taking Cell Bio, good luck.
Dr. Guzman was unsupporitve. Her lectures were confusing, and the tests/quizzes were extremely difficult/brutal. I studied my brains out and came out with a very low grade at the end of the semester. There are very few extra credit opportunities. The class was stressful/discouraging. The other reviews are true. Don't take class unless you have to.
This was way too hard of an entry level biology course. She did not care about issues that you had that kept you from completing assignment, like being sick. Deadlines for assignments, such as a quiz due on a random Sunday during Thanksgiving break. Totally condescending, also. If you dont answer questions in class, then your grade suffers from it.
My cell bio block is much easier as a first year MD student because of Dr. Guzman. Please learn to appreciate the professors who hold you accountable and push you to be better! You are going to have to take the MCAT and the Step exams, so the easy road will not do you any favors. Embrace the pain, take the class, get the A, and go save some lives!
You don't even want to know. It's bad. Like got her course removed from the requirements of a biology heavy major kinda bad. If you are required to take any of her classes, buckle up buttercup. If you're not required to take her courses, run for the hills and never look back.
Dr. Guzman is the sweetest person, but this class of hers is extremely tough. I guess it's to weed out people not suited for med school...except this class is needed because it's a prerequisite of many other bio classes. I'm not a pre-med student; this class does not need to be this hard for a 201 class. I'll have an A or B at the end, but still.
Near the end there are some extra credit things to bring up your grade but they are not significant/make a huge difference. She does allow an extra credit opportunity to bring up an exam grade though. You basically retake your exam with similar questions to original. Make sure you learn the calculations in lab. It comes back in several assessments.
Dr. Guzman is one of the most obnoxious professors at Campbell. She makes the exams extremely difficult to pass and consistently confuses students with her poor lectures, where she would sometimes contradict herself or the textbook. I would not recommend this class to anyone who does not need it for their major. It will suck the life out of you.
Not a fan of being graded on “participation “ in online lecture videos in an in person class. She really did not teach in our class time, but just did some weird group discussions, which were more confusing than helpful. I wish she would have just taught the material like normal and not required so much out of class prep time.
She made me want to off myself after every class. Her test have absolutely nothing to do with the content in class. Do not take Biology or Cell with this woman!!!!!!!!!
Dr. Guzman's Basic Biology class is awful. She randomly took up homework only on day one, gives impossible exam questions, and teaches like it's a 400-level course. She even assigned a quiz on Thanksgiving. Participation is strict, there's no real help, and you never know your grade. Overall the class feels disorganized and so very unfair
Dr. Guzman's class is a nightmare. She teaches basic biology like it's a 400-level course, gives impossible exams, random quizzes—even on holidays—and grades participation harshly. She offers zero help, never posts averages, and leaves students stressed and lost. Truly awful.
