Knows the material and gives real life knowledge. She cares about her students and is available to talk. You want to go to class to get her personal take on the material which is fascinating. I wish there were more teachers like her in the department - she inspires her students to reach higher and do their best.
She is one of the nicest teachers you will ever have. It's pretty much impossible not to get an A in this class, she even tells you that at the beginning of the semester. She wants to help you and give you answers. Shows a lot of videos, so you need to come to class but does a lot of easy written assignments and gives you study guides.
One of the easiest class i took. Very nice and caring. No textbook required. Just attend her review session and and she gives you the answers. Short essay questions. There are a lot of group works which are important to her so make sure to participate. Also show up to class or she docks you.
She teaches you to care about hunger and the environment. She is passionate about doing your part to help others and requires volunteer hours to help those struggling with poverty and hunger. This class changed my life.
Great Professor and interesting class - she makes it fun! Attendance is mandatory but you will enjoy being in class. Your grade is up to your work so do your part and you will do well in this class. Very fair but very strict on assignments and class participation. Very helpful and great communicator. Best class I have taken at SJSU. Learned a lot!
Life-changing class. Prof Harvey is passionate about hunger and poverty and her energy inspires you to action. Very easy going but do not be late to class, turn in assignments late, or think this is an easy class. If you do your part, you can do very well in this class. Very clear expectations and great communicator. She cares about her students.
BEST. CLASS. EVER. Get ready to be inspired and challenged. Professor Harvey is funny and passionate and you can't help being caught up in her enthusiasm for hunger and poverty and how we can make a difference. Take this class, whether you need to or not! I wish she taught more courses at SJSU!
She is very bad at explaining the assignments. Her instructions are not clear or precise. Her exams are easy but her assignments are very HARD. She is a TOUGH grader. If you make one mistake, she will give you zero for the whole assignment. She is not prepared for the lectures and seems a bit unorganized. I regret taking her class, barely passing.
Best class ever. Best instructor ever.
Professor Harvey wants her students to be successful and she communicates clearly her expectations from the beginning. She is always available to help and is easy to talk to. Her lectures are great. This is the best class and you get to know your classmates really well. Take this class!
I did a double major and took way more classes than I needed to take. This is the best class I have ever had. It changes your life. Professor Harvey is the most passionate, articulate, caring teacher. She is totally dedicated to her students and making them successful. More importantly, you will be a better human being after this class.
This class is the best for getting to know your classmates. Professor Harvey knows her stuff when it comes to cultural competence - she is passionate about understanding other cultures and teaches you that different isn't wrong, it's just different. Great class, awesome professor.
Professor Harvey is the best communicator. She makes the expectations clear from day one. If you don't get an A in this class, you didn't do your part. Great class. Great professor. Great experience.
I took two classes from Professor Harvey and I wish I could have taken more! SJSU needs more Professors like her: caring, knowledgeable, passionate, great communicator. She has clear expectations and lets you know from the beginning. Your grade is up to you - do the assignments and you will do well. She respects her students!
Passionate. Cares about student's success. Available. Knowledgeable. This class changes your life. Take Professor Harvey. Oh, and she's funny.
TAKE PROFESSOR HARVEY FOR ANY CLASS YOU CAN GET. HER CLASSES FILL UP FAST AND NO ONE DROPS! YOU WILL BE A BETTER PERSON FOR HAVING BEEN IN HER CLASS.
Professor Harvey knows every single student by name. She is totally dedicated to her students' success and gives her all. She cares. You will learn a lot from her.
Pros: Passionate Cons: Lazy--promised help, then takes back offer because too much work; complains a lot, talks lowly Maybe she was really tired this semester, but I expected from these other reviews for her to be a lot better. Be careful of final paper. Lacks explanation and gives ridiculous score for sources she doesn't like. 12 hrs comm service.
Take this class with Professor Harvey. I learned so much from her and she is totally dedicated to her students. She goes beyond in making her students successful but you have to do your part. Not an easy class but it will open your eyes to the world around you. As a person, she is high energy and her passion is motivating.
Pros: she is passionate about what she teaches! She also gave out all the assignments at the beginning of semester so that students could arrange their own time to complete them. Cons: The exams were very hard! No study guide! When she did the exam review, no clear instructions either. Only two students got A in the class!!! And no curve!
Pros: cares, passionate, available, all assignments available on first day of class, explains everything clearly, reminds you of due dates Cons: have to go to class, no late papers, have to do your part
Professor Harvey cares about her students. She wants you to be successful and gives assignments for the semester the first day of class. She responds to emails within 24 hours and seems to be always available to students. If you show up to class you will do well. Very inspirational course and Professor Harvey knows her stuff. And she is hilarious!
Take this class. Period.
Best teacher ever! She is really passionate about her class.I really don't get why she was rated low. It's probably because they put no kinds of effort. Attendance is not mandatory, but if you show up and she sees that you are there all the time she will round up your grade. I didn't study for the midterm and still managed to receive a B...
This professor has a high rating so I was excited to take her thinking it would be a fun class, boy was I wrong. This professor is unhelpful, sarcastic lazy & emotional. She does not review for the exam despite it being listed on the syllabus. She is not flexible or understanding with her students either. Her instructions are unclear too. Be careful
BEST PROFESSOR AND MOST IMPACTFUL CLASS I HAVE TAKEN AT SJSU. TAKE HER. SHE IS PASSIONATE, CARING AND WILL GO BEYOND TO HELP YOU DO WELL. SERIOUSLY AMAZING!
Professor Harvey is amazing! She knows the material and is passionate about teaching. She is willing to help and sets the class up to make students to well. Not a class you can skip so don't take if you don't tend to go to class. Seriously one of the best teachers at SJSU. I wish she taught more classes.
I learned so much from Professor Harvey! She has a very comfortable teaching style and gives very practical information - not just textbook theory. I feel much more prepared for my career after taking this class. Professor Harvey is kind and hilarious. Class participation is expected but you will want to go to class! Easy to get an A.
I was excited to take this professor because of her good reviews. However, I have been very disappointed. She's passionate, but she is not very good at communication. For example, she doesn't respond to emails within a timely manner, doesn't explain her expectations for assignments, and doesn't review for the midterm despite her saying she would.
She has 2 group projects and 2 big tests and a paper. Mostly is all easy, but the instructions and specific requirements are not very clear. She just expects us to know. She grades very harshly especially for the second group project where you have 6 group members. It's an easy class "in theory" but she can be a bit harsh and unclear. Takes work!
She is a solid teacher, she doesn't allow any later papers or hw which I respect since she says it on the first day that she doesn't tolerate late work. The final and midterm were super easy, attend the lecture because the material is pretty interesting and alot of it is on the midterm and final.
Professor Harvey changed the whole focus of my career by making me love community nutrition! She is passionate about the issues and gives practical solutions. She knows what she's talking about and is a great communicator. She has high standards for her students but is very clear about them from day one. Very inspiring and easy to get an A.
Professor Harvey is excellent. She truly wants students to be successful and is available. The class is amazing and will change your life! Get ready to learn about what's actually going on in the world! The volunteer hours seem harsh but every single student ends up loving it. It should be a required course at SJSU! She is also very entertaining.
As soon as COVID hit her attitude changed completely. During web classes she rushed through them and was very rude to students via emails. And was not clear at all about expectations. Im lucky I passed with a B. I understand she was stressed, as we all were, but things could have been handled differently.
She has good reviews on here, but due to COVID, she definitely is not the same... She barely has lecture, no book, she grades harshly on your opinions. Emails are very rude towards students. There are minimal assignments, which is good, but she grades harsh.
Recommended by a fd took inclass, but her online was totally done works by yourself! Graded harshly, and replied emails rude (in fact she didn't explain on the things clearly but blamed that's was our responsibilities to read carefully on the guidelines and honestly which is so UNCLEAR). 10 discussions, once a week in ten weeks, plus 3/4 papers
This professor is rude via email and does not respond at a timely manner. She also does not accept late work despite the fact that we are in a pandemic.
This class is based very much on discussions, presentations, and papers. If you do not do the discussions, then you will not pass. She will not announce when the discussions are due, and there is no notification on canvas. She is very rude in her emails and is not very understanding even though we are in a pandemic. NO LATE WORK ACCEPTED!
She does not make instructions clear and she's a tough grader that doesn't accept late work despite the fact that we are in a PANDEMIC. Half the class mistook the wrong due date for the final paper and she's not accepting any late work.
Honestly one of the rudest teachers at SJSU. She is very disrespectful to students making her unapproachable. She doesn't accept any latework despite that we are in the middle of a global emergency. There are better professors in the department.
No reminders or canvas announcements for discussions. She won't allow you to submit late discussions for partial or any credit. Her assignments were time consuming for a GE class and she is a tough grader. Not specific with her instructions and even if you do the assignment but mess up submission time or day she won't grade it and gives no credit.
WORST PROFESSOR I have ever taken, so rude to her students and doesn't respond to her emails. She got upset at me because I didn't start my final essay sooner, even though I am taking other classes that also have other finals. This class is a GE, and shouldn't be as complicated as she makes it, please don't take her, she made me cry three times.
Very tough grader. There were a few assignments, but she rarely explained the instructions. Weekly discussions (with no announcements on them) and no exams. The reason I passed with a passing grade is because I stayed up almost all night doing them, so it's a tough class for a GE. Her emails were fine but came off as rude sometimes.
She canceled basically all her zoom sessions. Not clear in her instructions and grades very hard. This class is a complete waste of time. There are better options for this class
I took this course in fall 2020 and this class was easy, yet difficult. The assignments and weekly discussions are not hard to complete but she can be tough on grading. Her grading made me overthink and stress out on assignments. This class was not supposed to be fully online but she set it up that way after a month into the course.
She is rude. She also gives unclear assignment details and grading criteria. She is accessible outside of class, but her emails and meeting with her will ruin your day. Gave feedback on her, but she didn't take it because I hear from many students she has not changed. If at all possible, take another professor omg...
This class is practical. You will learn a lot by doing what a community nutritionist would do. The class flows well and the assignments are taking the lecture material and doing projects that reinforce the material. I never understood public policy but now I am excited to get more involved because I see the importance of it. Great class!
Great Prof. Take any class she teaches. Easy A if you do the assignments. No tests. I learned a lot from her class.
Prof Harvey cares about her students. I had some issues during the semester and she was very understanding and flexible. She is more available than any other professor I've had. She spends time on zoom with you as often as you need. I would not have done as well with everything else going on without the her help.
This is a great class and it's easy to do well because there aren't a lot of assignments and no exams. You will learn a lot about other cultures and things I had no idea about but now I feel more aware of other people's cultures. Fun class. Easy A.
Not too bad of a workload. Weekly discussion posts, two group projects, one research paper. The only complaints I have are that her instructions are quite vague and all the info for her course is hidden under Files. Wish she communicated more with the class but at least she responds to emails quickly.
The workload is okay but her instructions are super unclear. I have to email her almost several times a week to ask for clarification or questions on an assignment. Even then, she sometimes didn't answer my question and just basically told me to figure it out myself. She does respond quickly, but her attitude is terrible so I couldn't handle that.
She doesnt give you a heads up on work that is coming up. Her canvas is super unorganized and she expects you to find everything on your own and gives no direction. Plus assignments are locked as soon as they are due. Went from having an A all semester to a C because of one assignment that I turned in late. Only reason she graded bc I wouldve fail.
Dont be fooled by these bad reviews. Her canvas is disorganized, but its nothing to where you can't pass her class. An easy A class with NO quizzes or exams. Just weekly discussions and a few easy group projects. Shes easy to work with and is a sweet woman. If you can navigate canvas then youll be just fine. NO studying needed to pass!
Even though professor is disorganized, it just means you have to navigate like the other person said. Make sure you do discussions and follow the guidelines! I forgot to respond to 2 students and my grade dropped a lot. No quizzes or exams and there is 1 project, 1 paper (same partner). Also, 1 cultural research paper as well. Easy A/B.
Heavy class material even it good but class contain a lot of material and test were heavy.
Terrible professor, unprofessional, doesn't respond to any emails. Worst grading criteria ever, all over the place. Does not know how to use Canvas. She says one thing in the assignment instructions but expects completely something else. Doesn't care for students at all. Please DO NOT take this professor unless you want to ruin your GPA completely.
Absolutely AWFUL. Doesn't give out proper instructions, no tests and no way to turn in late work. If your plagiarism score is over 10% or turn in the paper as a PDF instead of a Word document, that's a fat ZERO. Doesn't respond to emails. This class is harder than my major class. Save yourself and don't take any class with her.
Don't recommend. Class is easy but she makes it difficult. Graded by VERY few items. Felt like a middleschool discussion instead of a real class. Doesn't have clear instructions, doesn't respond back constructively (literally replied as no and 1 sentence answers to questions). Doesn't try to help us succeed and if you miss 1 assignment good luck.
this could be an easy a class w no studying if professor would respond to emails in a helpful way and have clear grading instructions and expectations, esp on the papers she grades which you can't resubmit & w no extra credit at all to make up. weekly discussions (20p), 2 group papers (75p, 125p). total 500p w no extra credit and no makeup chances.
If you want to fail due to grammar mistakes on a paper, go for it. She takes points off things that make no sense. She also never puts anything on canvas, so you never know what is going on unless you go to class. Likewise, she gives zero sympathy to anything that is going on.
Most useless class I've ever taken, with the most unhelpful professor. This was my 1st Uni experience after community college and I'm surprised by the lack of quality. Had to pay $1k+ for this class which would cover a full semester of college + books. Don't take this if you don't want to regret money & time spent, not to mention the GPA hit.
Best elective course at SJSU. Very interesting and you learn so much about other cultures. Only 3 assignments and no exams. Take this course!
This is a very current course. I learned so much about things like Fair Trade, GMO's, Social Business and other topics that we hear about but don't understand. I highly recommend this professor and class. Always available to discuss assignments or clarify things. Really cares about students and social issues. No exams.
This is the second class I have taken with Professor Harvey and they are both similar with no exams and straightforward assignments. She wants students to do well and gives you all the help you need. If you want a couple of good electives with no exams take her classes.
I got the best grade ever in this class and it bumped up my GPA! Assignments and discussions but no exams. She provides samples of assigments and goes over everything in detail. She really cares about student success and will spend zoom time outside of class to help. Very nice and very friendly.
I needed an extension for another class project and she was very understanding. I was able to do well in both classes. You have to ask in advance and not just assume your late assignment will be accepted after the due date has passed. She is very kind and helped me alot.
Great class and very current. I learned a lot and appreciated no exams. She is very accessible and gets back to you fast. I am taking her again next semester for another GE. Not having exams is amazing!
This class improved my GPA because there are no exams and only 3 assignments. Just do the work on time and you will do great. She is a good person.
I learned a lot in this class because I got to listen instead of taking notes for exams. I love her style of teaching and easy going personality. She really cares and wants students to do well. It bumped up my GPA a lot!
So glad I took this class when I did as I had a big load and it was nice to have an easy and fun class to relax in. Very appoachable and available. Willing to zoom for commuter students. I have a new passion for community nutrition and understand the assessment process so much better.
If you need an easy class in any semester, take one of her classes. You will learn a lot but it won't stress you out. No book. No tests. She's available any time you want help. Very understanding and caring.
Watch her welcome videos as she gives a lot of info about the class. Also read the announcements. This class opened my eyes to what's going on in the world about stuff I had no idea about. I understand world issues so much better. And you don't have to study for exams. I improved my GPA because of this class.
You have to miss assignments not to do well in this class because there are no exams. As long as you turn stuff in you will get an A. Professor Harvey is very available and answers emails pretty fast. And she grades fast so you know where you stand all the time. I would take every class she teaches because her system is the same.
I agree with what the previous student said. Do the assignments on time and you will get an A. Period.
I graduated this semester and this class bumped my GPA and was the perfect class for my last semester not having exams and just assignments that are available from the beginning of the semester. Seriously, take this Professor for any class she teaches.
Very good class to learn about other cultures. Low key, no exams, 3 assignments. Strict on turning in assignments on time but other than that very easy to get an A. Don't be late and you'll be fine. Relazing class to have with harder classes.
Her classes fill up fast so what does that tell you?
I took Professor before and am trying to get in another class with her because I like her style but all her classes have been full from the beginning of enrollment. I'm on a waiting list but don't think I'll get in. Obviously, she is an in demand professor. If you want to take her classes, better register when you can. I learned the hard way.
I have nothing bad to say about Ms. Harvey per se, but her class was completely unorganized. Make sure to read everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, on the assignments because she will not give you the opportunity to correct anything after it's been submitted. The cool thing about this class that I did like is that you have no quizzes or exams.
I was lucky to add the course after my friends got in and told me it was amazing. I plan to take every class she teaches. Don't wait to add her classes as they fill up fast and no one drops. Do the work on time and you will do well. There are only 3 assignments and no exams. She's available if you need help. Grades super fast. Awesome. Trust me.
Light on assignments. No exams. Register early or you won't get in. Easiest class I have this semester and I'm learning a lot without the pressure.
Registration just opened yesterday and her classes are getting full or full already. Don't wait to take Professor Harvey or you will not get in. Do the work and get an A. So straightforward and no exams/quizzes. She's available for questions and grades fast.
Her class is fairly simple. There is a DP every week (500 words & 2 Replies) 1 interview paper (1000 words) 1 research paper (1250 words) 1 presentation (recorded and submitted for a dp). Start things early since she does not accept late work.
She provides rubrics for her assignments but it will depend on the student's luck if she follows it or not. Takes days to reply to emails and deducts points for ridiculous reasons. Avoid taking her if possible
Doesn't really teach but asks questions and provides PPTs for students to read. The Canvas page for the course is quite unorganized (big projects are not included in the Modules, so you can only look for them on the Assignments page), and she takes a while to give feedback. Take another professor if you have the option to.
Enjoyed answering her discussions but unfortunately, her grading methods for big projects like presentations or papers are ridiculous. Deducts so many points for trivial things like file format (which she only mentions once in her syllabus) by saying certain formats are "unreadable". Drop or try not to take a course with her if you can.
This class totally improved my GPA. It is so interesting and I learned a lot about other cultures. She grades fast so you always know where you stand. She is helpful and always available. Responds to emails quickly. Am taking again next semester and wish she taught more classes. Take her if you want to learn and not stress.
This is a class to take if you have a heavy load in your major. I learned so much about current events like global warming, fair trade, GMo's that I had no idea about but now understand. Very easy to do well if you do the work. Not a critical grader and no stress. I tried to get another class of hers next semester but they are all full.
I had a tough semester with some things happening and I reached out to Professor Harvey and she got me through the semester. She really cares about her students and is very compassionate. I never would have graduated without her support. She is an amazing person.
She was great only thing is SHE NEVER EVER REPLIES TO EMAILS.Class was overall easy discussion posts every week, 2 essays, one presentation. When it comes to essays / presentations she kind of grades unpredictably . She doesnt teach much just readings. easy class but she is strict with deadlines and format NO PDF. she does not respond to emails
Professor Harvey is a good and easy professor. There are 4 writing assignments, 500 to 750 words and they have clear instructions for what is expected. Along with that, there are 10 discussions. 1 discussion is due each week. A discussion requires 500 words as a response to the prompt. Class is point based. The Final is a short reflection paper.
Very stringent professor who adheres to principles that a grade school teacher might. She has rules and no one can break them--even with sickness or family matters. She permits no late hw submissions and has no ability or desire to listen and understand life's challenges when they get in the way of school matters. Her rules are the same for all tho
I have never had a professor care so much about the grade I get in class. She goes above and beyond to help you be successful. If you turn in an assignment early she will give you feedback to improve it before the deadline. I have her for 2 classes and my GPA is going up after this semester.
I am doing way better than I expected based on the bad reviews. I would recommend taking her. If you do the work you get the points. She is always available to help and responds fast. Also grades fast so you know where you stand. Not sure why students don't do well but most do. Her classes fill up fast so that says something.
Professor Harvey is always available and responds fast to emails. She is willing to help you do well and explains assignments so you will do well. Everyone I know who has taken her classes has done well. You have to turn in the work on time but other than that there is nothing hard about it. Her classes fill up fast so don't hesitate.
I am writing this so that students will do themselves a favor and take this class. This is an interesting class with current issues that I had no idea about but now understand. The assignments are clear and there are no exams. Professor Harvey is always available for questions and grades fast.
I just took 2 of her classes and got A's in both which improved my GPA significantly which makes a big difference since I'm graduating this semester. Take Professor Harvey!
I am just finishing a class with her and it was a great class especially with a tough load. Turn in assignments on time and you will have no problem with this class. Professor Harvey is very available and gets back fast.
I had a really tough semester and fell behind on assignments. I honestly would not have passed the class and graduated without her help. She is not a pushover but has a huge heart and really cares.
My first A in college. Just do the work on time and you will do well. She is very helpful and answers emails fast. Also grades fast so you know where you stand all the time. Take this class.
Just follow the guidelines and do the assignment. A mix of papers, discussions, and answering questions from lecture videos. Not that bad.
I took her for 3 classes this semester and so far I have an A in all of them. Her style is the same for every class which makes it easy to take more than 1. Do the assignments on time and it's easy to do well. My GPA is definitely going up after this!
All I know is it's very hard to get into her classes because they fill up fast. I have tried other semesters and it took me a while to take her. Worth the wait.
I took 3 classes with Professor Harvey and would take more if I could. Just finishing up 114B and it is a great class. Same style as her other ones so if you have taken her you would like this one too. The assignments are interesting and different from other classes I have taken. Nothing hard. Just do the work and get the A.
I've been waiting to register for her 139 class and it's already full and registration just started. I loved 144 and wanted to take her again but her classes fill up fast. Her style is so user friendly and you know everything from day one. If you have the chance to take Professor Harvey for any class she teaches you should do it.
I took 114B this semester and it was a great class. I have taken other classes with Professor Harvey and her style is the same in all her classes. The class was different than I thought it would be in a good way. Definitely recommend.
For NUFS 139, I liked how there was NO EXAMS, NO QUIZZES, and REPLIED fast to answer any questions on CANVAS. However, there are a total of 4 main writing assignments but as long you put in the work, you will do fine. There is weekly discussions on each topic and must meet a word requirement. For the final, there is only a Reflection Paper. :))
I have taken Prof Harvey for 3 classes: 114B, 139, 144 and they are all the same format and style. She is very responsive to emails and is always available to clarify assignments or answer any questions. No exams. Just do the work on time and you will get an A.
Take someone else
She contradicts herself on canvas multiple times, and when you call her out on it she says "refer to the rubric" or "everybody else got it". Her grading is difficult, regardless of that she makes you feel like you're incompetent, when you just want to succeed in the class. If you already have her, talk to your classmates and work together.
She follows the syllabus down to a crack. Weekly assignments, don't procrastinate because some of them take 3-4 hours. No late work is accepted. Clear directions but you need to sit down and do the work. I would take it again.
Consists of a few assignments, even missing one will bring your grade down a lot. Does not accept late work or offer extra credit. Easy class if you do the work and follow the rubric exactly.
Workload was pretty light- no tests and quizzes just discussions and short writing assignments. Word count is really important in discussions.
Great professor. Do all your work. Very accessible outside of class.
Great class, no exams or quizzes - just discussions and papers. As long as you stay on top of the assignments, you'll do well. unstuckstudy was super helpful for prepping. Professor keeps grading quick too.
Follow her rubric/directions and you will get a good grade. She gives feedback for every assignment/paper. Only have discussions, short assignments + papers, and one final reflection. Super easy class and really nice/responsive professor. Anyone who complains about their grade just didn't follow/read her directions (APA, word count, evidence).
If you do the work you will get a good grade. I have taken 3 courses with Professor Harvey and I would take more if she taught more. Her style of teaching is easy to follow and geared towards success. Just follow the rules and you will improve your GPA in her classes.
I learned so much from this class about real world events that I had no idea about. It's like a current events class but about things that matter. It is so eye opening and I'm so glad I took this class. I can actually have an intelligent conversation about world events. Everyone should have to take this class.
This was a fun class and I learned a lot about other cultures and I realized that I didn't understand much about how other people do things. I loved the discussions and the readings. Even the assignments were interesting. Just do the work on time and you will get a good grade.
This class made me change my career direction. It is a great class that is different from any other GE course. Professor Harvey wants students to do well and creates the environment to be successful. I highly recommend this course.
Best class I have taken at SJSU. I learned more about world events and issues than in any other class I have taken. Very inspirational and motivating course. I highly recommend that class and the provessor. She is amazing.
Super easy class and A as long as you hit the required word count on discussions. No final exam, but there is a short final paper that is a reflective essay (no citations, bibliography, etc). The content is actually interesting too if you pay attention.
