Hattenhauer is a good prof, she explains things clearly, she's really friendly and she wants you to do good in her course. She gets a bit emotional sometimes when she talks about her kids and husband, but overall I'd recommend her as a prof.
Excellent Prof! She really makes sure you understand and will actually take the time to go over it again if we don't! She is really nice and friendly and do explain things pretty good! Definitelt recommend her foe chem!
Very nice woman, good prof. Notes are all online, but she does examples in class. Very enthusiastic about her subject.
Awesome teacher! Would recommend her to EVERYONE!
Shes a good teacher but her notes can get confusing. Go to the TUTORIALS thats your best bet. TIBER IS AWESOME!
A fair teacher- she uses a lot of examples, but she likes using calculation methods that are a little different than high school. You really need to go to the tutorials to make it completely clear.
Great Prof. She does lots of examples and asks if anyone does not understand.

Karen is the best chem prof out there! Her tests are long but she is a very fair marker. She cares about how you do and helps out as much as possible (appointments after class etc;). She explains everything to the fullest and is very thorough. GET THIS PROF!!
ok prof, she filps out a lot at the class for talking and wastes time by doing so. know waht she is talking about but does not make many topics clear
She was an ok prof, however I disliked the way she presented the material using fractions when she could have just used equations. However that was the method they used in the book so I guess thats why she did it. She's bestkind but if I hadn't have done chem in highschool I think I would have found that course a lot harder than it needed to be.
she is extremely helpful and is a very good professor.
Great teaching skills. Did a lot of useful examples. Tests were hit or miss. Some were difficult while others weren't. The final was simple though. The Tutorial instructors corrected my exams, and were particularly brutal, but Dr. Hattenhauer is a really nice woman, and excellent prof.
Very good prof, does lots of examples in class and explains things thoroughly.
I had her for chem 1010, 1011 and 2440. For 2440, she was useless. Bought the text and she just wrote the notes WORD FOR WORD from the text. Used the same examples so we never got extra practice. I don't think she knew what she was talking about. DIdn't explain things well. Was an overall bad teacher. Do not recommend at all.
Doesn't waste time but trys to simplify thing to much and ends up making it way more confusing then it has to be
She has no idea of what she is doing!!
Great woman! she drops the lowest mark for you which helped me get an A+ in the course, although i got 62 on one of the midterms...focus on learning the problems in this course because 99% of her tests are calculations. Talk to her in person, because she is very helpful.
Worst prof ever makes things harder then they really are and doesn't explain her notes
Found her terrible and she didnt know what she was doing. Tried to talk to her and felt ridiculed.
I really cant believe there's people out there who thought she was a good prof. Her teaching methods were terrible, you could tell she didnt care who passed or failed, and she wasn't a very approachable person in general. Erika Mersherod is teaching 1011 (this semester anyway) and shes AMAZING!
Nice lady but sooooo boring. She talks alot about unimportant stuff and wastes alot of time. The lectures are useless, but the chem tutorials are great! (highly recommend them )
I don't see why everyone is crapping on Dr. H. This course is not hard at all for anyone with some HS Chem background, and even if you put no effort in you can come out with 70%'s on your exams. I found her very approachable, though her lectures are fast, she is understandable if you aren't texting in class. Maybe Dr. H is not the prob... you are.
Very boring, doesn't teach and is not helpful
Questions on exams are nothing like the ones given in class or on online assignments. This is what makes the tests difficult, not the actual material. I had a 91% in level three high school chem, now I'm struggling for a pass even though it is the same material! I will not be recommending this prof to anyone else!!
The way she taught made everything very difficult to understand. The only reason i knew what was going on was due to the tutorials. The prof herself was useless. Would not recommend. Ever.
Chem 1010: I found her lectures very boring. I feel so bad for people coming into this course without doing third level chem. She made everything way more difficult than it needed to be. She is nice but spoke to us like we were kids. I won't be taking another course with her.
I had her for 1010, 1011, and now 2210. She's a great prof, knows her stuff. Easy to talk to if you need help. In the first year courses, she tends to talk to you like children, but still great overall. Would definitely recommend!
I had this prof for 1010 and now 1011 and she is a really great prof! I would get her for all chemistry courses if I could. she is very helpful and nice. She really takes the time to explain things well and do examples! :)
Nice lady, but sometimes not clear with her teaching and is boring in class lectures. I ended up skipping and mainly just going to every tutorial.
If you took Chemistry in high school 1011 isn't hard at all, her lectures are a bit boring because she just reads off the slides but she does do a lot of good examples. If you go to class, read her notes and go to the tutorials its not hard to get an 80 in this course.
Really nice prof. The lectures were sometimes really boring, as she just read out slides, but she was really enthusiastic about Chem.
Does not deserve the constant bashing on this website. She's very nice and extremely helpful if you see her outside of class. She geniunely cares about how her students perform and is extremely passionate about chemistry. I would reccommend her. Also would like to note that she isn't the hard marker, the TAs are.
hattenhauer is a good prof! she's very enthusiastic about chemistry. i would recommend her to anyone.
Nice woman but I found the class very difficult to pay attention to as she mostly read off the slides which were not particularly interesting to me. I'm fairly ambivalent about her and despite not finding her awful, I'd like to try someone else for chemistry after 1011 (which is only taught by her next semester).
Tests, midterms, and labs were all super easy but final was brutal
she is a really good professor, she really knows what shes taking about. however she writes notes like there is no tomorrow, fairly hard to keep up but overall a great professor.
Very enthusiastic, kept me entertained throughout the entire lecture! She is very easy to approach and helpful. Also she includes lots of examples for you to refer to in the future.
At first, didn't like her. After the semester went on, I found she explained everything very well and tried her best to teach. It wasn't all that interesting but she game A LOT of examples which was fantastic. Would recommend her.
Great prof! Very enthusiastic which keeps class fairly interesting. She gives a lot of examples and tests are fair. I would definitely recommend her!
Karen is very enthusiastic when she teaches which makes it easier to pay attention. She did a very good job at explaining some units but others I found the tutorials more helpful. She seems nice but every time I've seen her in the hall she looks kinda angry and intimidating. I wouldn't hesitate to take her again if it worked with my schedule.
Okay, so.. really nice person. As far as her teaching methods go, she was not that great. If you have zero high school chemistry experience I feel like she will confuse the heck outta you! Some concepts she makes so much harder than it needs to be. I didn't find her exams easy. So if you have her, make sure you attend tutorials and study your text!
She's one of the nicest people I've ever met and she's very enthusiastic about chemistry, so her lectures are rarely boring. Her tests are difficult, but certainly fair. She also really cares about the success of her students. Overall she's a great prof!
Hattenhauer was alright. Definitely better than any chem teacher I've had in high school but sometimes hard to follow on her rants and she starts talking about herself a lot. She also spent most of our lecture, lecturing us about how loud of a class we were. She needs to realize that being in SN2109 with probably 400+ ppl is going to be loud.
She overcomplicated things way too much. Dividing/Multiplying things by one is unnecessary but if you don't do it on a test you will lose a lot of marks. She isn't very helpful either, on the first day she told us if we had any questions to ask the TA's and don't come to her.
She's a great prof as long as you went to class and did the online assignments you should have no trouble with the course. Her midterms are easy enough most questions came from in class examples so write them down! you don't need the text book as much as she says you do, I only used mine three times in both 1010 and 1011
She gets very excited and into her lectures but she moves very quick so your notes won't be nice. It's a little confusing getting use to her ways. Always there to help and assignments online are super easy. Don't take long either.
Nice person. That's about all I can say that's positive about this prof. I get enough sleep every night but listening to her voice makes me fall asleep instantly. Two years of chemistry in high school and she makes the same exact material way more confusing. Wouldn't recommend to anyone. Never taking chemistry again because of this prof.
Makes everything way harder than it has to be, her lectures are boring and if you are trying to copy her notes you wont have enough time. She is a really nice person but i highly recommend taking a different prof. If you did high school chem her course is brutal, if you don't do it her way you will lose marks. basically a new way to do hs chem
The majority of her notes and pointless, giving more about history of chem than the actual calculations for the test. Lab, tutorial, and lecture are all on different topics. She has never answered one of my emails through the whole semester, but if you see her in person she is nice and helpful. Wouldn't recommend if you want to enjoy the semester.
Tests are brutal. If you took Chem in highschool, you'd think you would be golden for this course, but think again. Highly recommend a different prof.
She was not clear on her information. i took this course in high school and went into her class and she made everything way more confusing. The tutorials, lectures and labs are pretty much not on the same topic at all. Cant take notes she goes to quick, questions that she does are nothing like whats on the tests. I high recommend not to take her.
Dr. Hattenhauer was such a great prof! Lectures can sometimes get boring if you're not interested, and you get a weekly assignment but the assignments are online and they're easy to get an A on!
Not a very good prof by any means, teaches too quickly so you will never understand what is going on in the class. High school chem is of no benefit to you, it does not help you with this Spends more time telling her students to be quiet, than she actually does teaching. Labs and tutorial classes are not matched up very well. DO NOT RECOMMEND!
Karen is a fairly good prof. You do however HAVE to work to achieve a good grade in this course. Her teaching is a little dry but she will help you in any way she can if you ask her. Karen's midterms are extremely difficult but the final is a breeeeeze! Work hard and you will do great :)
Excellent class and prof! Clear, easy to understand and there for you if you need help. Would strongly recommend going to class so you don't miss much because she doesn't go back over things. Lots of examples!
best chem prof I've had!
She made this course so easy! I only went to class to write the tests. She posts all the notes online and there are tons of examples in the textbook that you can do for practice. She would post online before the test what was covered and would give so much away. Super nice and chill. Final was SO EASY. Tests were perfect length (we had 75 mins)
Hattenhauer was a good prof. I had her my first semester at MUN and she definitely helped me with my chem. She really cares for her students, and always makes sure you understand the material. If you talk in class, she will single you out until you stop. She gives extra credit if you ask for it, and expect web assignments and homework. Great prof!
Hattenhauer was the worst prof I had all year. It was my first semester at MUN and being in her class was the worst thing that could have happened to me. She only read off the slides, making going to her class pointless, I only managed to pass because of easy labs. The material was easy her teaching not so much.
Hattenhauer is a beautiful lady! She is very helpful and answers emails very quickly. She knows her stuff very well and tries to teach you the most effective ways to do problems. Will discuss her lecture notes very thoroughly but it becomes so monotone and boring that I find myself day dreaming. Lots of people don't come to class because of this.
Very confusing, she did not explain things well. She assumed that we had done chemistry in high school. Would not take one of her classes again.
Hattenhauer knows her content very well and she teaches very clearly. She teaches very fast and if you miss a class you're going to be behind. Tests are average and not a surprise, she kind of hints at what is going to be on it. If you don't attend lectures and study, you won't pass. Great at helping first years get into the groove of university
I'd never done Chem before 1010, took it thinking it would be taught as an INTRODUCTORY COURSE. Teaches the course as if everyone is an expert. Flies through her slideshows, skipping many slides along the way claiming you "already know" the material. Made the material extremely hard to understand, if you've never done Chemistry you're on your own.
Karen has different teaching methods for Chem 1010 and Chem 2440. She is genuinely interested in organic chemistry, and it shows when she's teaching. She writes very fast so I recommend printing the notes. Do NOT skip class because she gives a ton of notes and sample problems which she does not post on D2L. Her tests were really hard.
This professor should really work on posting practice tests with answers, and provide more practice problems online. I found it exceptionally frustrating that she does not post things like this, and it makes it hard to prepare for tests. I will avoid her courses in the future if possible.
I would not recommend taking chem 1010 with hattenhauer if you didn't do chem in high school. Her tests are extremely hard and gives absolutely no direction on what to expect. Doesn't explain the in class examples at all, just expects you to know how to do them. If you struggle with chem at all I would highly suggest trying another prof.
I know from hearing comments in class, that some people thought Dr. Hattenhauer was a tough marker but from personal experience, I thought she was great. I read the text book and followed her notes and I got close to 90's on both exams. Karen does an awesome job making complex ideas seem simple. Hands down I would take her course again
Although she is a very nice and helpful prof, for a non-chem major who didn't take chem in highschool, it was by far one of the hardest courses I have yet taken. Considering that the exams incl. final are 100% math based, she did very little to no examples in class. She writes very fast and expects you to follow the math immediately.
I wouldn't recommend Hattenhauer if you haven't taken chemistry before. Some of her teachings can be very confusing and she works very fast. Also, her exams are long which gives you little time to work and focus on what you're doing. Overall, she's appears to be a very nice person, but not a great prof if you don't know anything about chemistry.
Very nice lady, but her lectures are very fast pace and she's all over the place sometimes.
Karen is not the prof that you want to take and avoid taking chemistry 1010 with her if you can. Her tests are very difficult no matter how hard you work.
Great prof. Currently taking chem 2440 with her. She is very enthusiastic about chemsitry and thoroughly explains everything that is covered. She outlines what is expected and what is not. would totally reccomend
GO TO CLASS AND PARTICIPATE (IE DO THE EXAMPLES WITH HER). If you think you can just skim by this class by showing up to the midterms with just a little bit of practice you're wrong. Karen goes through all of the material in class and is super helpful but if you don't put in the effort you're on a sinking ship and need to prepare for your death.
I found her lectures to be so boring and pointless that just going to class in case she did an example problem was too much a lot of the time. She spends too long on simple ideas and whizzes through complex ones, assuming we all did chemistry in high school and thank GOD I actually did or I would have failed. She's not down on giving example tests.
Good prof! She does lots of examples in class which are great for studying :)
Tests were brutal, but the final was great. You really need to put the work into this course to do well. I found Karen to be a decent prof who always gave good feedback and answered my questions but the lectures were sometimes confusing. I still got an A in the course but that was from attending tutorials and doing a lot of practice.
decent prof, the only thing worth going to class for is watching her do problems. Reads notes directly from the slideshow and doesn't really add anything else
Very nice person, open to trying to answer any questions you may have. However, she can be confusing, the exams were very difficult. You HAVE to put work into this course outside of class in order to do well. DO NOT leave mastering chemistry assignments for the last week before they are due; bad idea! Tutorials were what got me through the course.
Wow. This professor is simply terrible. She was not cut out to be a professor at all. Terrible at teaching. Chemistry shouldn't be just reading notes off a slideshow, it needs to be showing many many examples and actually SHOWING us how to do it. Instead, she just does nothing but read her own (awfully organized) notes to us. Definitely pass on her
I really enjoyed Dr. Hattenhauer. By far the most articulate prof I've had at MUN, and seems to understand what she's teaching very well and explains things in a way that's easy to understand. Only complaints would be she's seldom available outside of class and there is A LOT of memorization of polyatomics, elements, etc., so be prepared.
Professor Hattenhauer is a great teacher! I would recommend her to any colleague who is interested in taking Chemistry 1010
Very expressive prof, pretty good overall.
She cares about her students and gives great lectures! She's very nice when you talk to her and her tests are not very difficult. I find she's a very generous marker! If you make small mistakes she doesn't seem to care as long as she thinks you understand the main concepts. The textbook questions are great to study before tests.
No assignments for this class so you MUST keep up by practicing questions from the book. Seriously. I didn't and I didn't do as good as I might have otherwise.
It's very important to go to the lectures if you want to do well because she doesn't post any of the examples online and she does in-class learning catalytic questions almost every class. Overall a nice person.
Terrible prof. Doesn't explain concepts well. A lot of material. Exams are very hard. Avoid!!!
Karen is the best Chem prof I've had so far! She's lively during her lectures, which makes the concepts easier to take in and understand.
She's a great Prof, really knows what she's talking about! Her explanations are very clear and she seems to care about her students. The only thing is she doesn't post post-lecture notes so don't miss class.
While a sweet person, Dr. Hattenhauer's tests are beyond hard. The textbook is the only thing that gave me a chance at passing her course. If you skip class, you're doing the same home as she posts notes online. Lectures are tremendously boring.
Dr. Hattenhauer was the kindest prof I've had. She is so generous and caring over her students. She was like a mother figure, I absolutely adored her. The only complaint I would even dare to have is that her tests were extremely difficult. Nothing like we did in class. This could've been because this was her first year teaching the course though.
Karen is a vary caring prof and I would take her again if I had to continue in Chemistry. She acts like a mother towards her students but she can be very dry in her lectures. I found myself constantly zoning out. Her tests can also be hard so be sure to review the book questions. Go to class so you can get free marks by doing the learningcatalytics
Dr. Hattenhauer was overall a great prof! Make sure to attend class, learning catalytic questions are used frequently and are incorporated into final grade. Very approachable outside the classroom and takes time to help you with anything you're stuck on. Very caring person.
Rushes through the tougher course content and spends too much time explaining the basics (while helpful, not ideal or practical). Test long answer questions were more difficult then class examples and your best bet is to go through a LOT of examples from text/online.
Good prof. Lectures can be a bit off topic but she knows what she's talking about. Helpful to attend class. Midterms can be a bit tricky but the final was very fair to make up for it, only took about half the allotted time to complete. Would take again.
Honestly one of the best profs I have so far. She is really inspirational and her lectures are interesting. I got to understand many chemical concepts thanks to her as she explains them in a vivid way. She is also very friendly and ready to answer any questions.
Great prof for first year students.
She really cares about you doing well in the course and, even more than doing well, understanding the material. She always makes sure to be really clear about what is going to be on the exams.
Amazing prof. Really cares about her students and wants them to pass. Explains concepts really well to ensure that you understand whats going on. She made a hard course much easier and shes very kind and approachable, definitely would recommend.
I enjoy Karen's teaching style quite a lot. Her slides are very helpful and give you enough information that you can study them and be well prepared for midterms. Gives example problems in class. Fair marker and is obviously enthusiastic about chemistry, having had bad chem profs in the past she's been a breath of fresh air.
Very hard marker, expects a lot from students, class is mandatory if you want to pass.
Very tough grader. Does not give practice exams. Teaches only theory and expects students to know everything. Very dry lectures.
Alright so shes a tough grader lets get that out of the way. You have to have every little tiny detail within the question or you'll be docked marks. She is so inspired with the course material you can tell she really enjoys teaching it. For the first half of the semester is good, second half, bring a blanket and pillow to help yourself out.
She is a nice person, however, she is not the best professor. Her Lectures are boring that you could zone out. She spends to much time on straight forward information and a short time on complicated topics. She uses learning catalytic, you should log in to show that you are present. However, you don't have to be in class to do so.
She is sweet, but lectures are dry and she goes super fast.
Hard to follow and does not make it clear on what you will be tested on. Spends lots of time talking but not much on things you actually need to know.
Not a good prof
Honestly dont get me wrong karen is a nice lady but i would never recommend taking her class. She spends a large portion of lectures on tangents and abandoning the material, leaving students feeling lost and unprepared for the tests. her tests are significantly harder than other 1050 profs. My mark went form a 97 on highschool to barely passing.
Very nice lady, but not easy to follow when lecturing. She often spends a lot of time speaking on concepts that arent relevant and briefly goes over important stuff. The only thing that brought up my grades were the lab, and the final was easier than the midterms. If you have no other option, shes alright, but not the best.
Dont take this prof if you can avoid it. She is super sweet and caring but her exams are significantly harder than other chem profs and she makes them incredibly hard she goes off on tangents in class which make it confusing and even if you are following along in class she goes through the practice problems so quickly that you have no time to copy
Karen is a sweetheart. Ive had her for both general chemistry courses and Ive never had a better learning experiences with her! She makes you work for your grade by making hard term tests BUT they prepare you for the final which is comparably easier then the tests. She also goes into great detail about material and is willing to help any student
Karen is a sweet lady but shes only sweet when she is apologizing for messing up. Her grading scheme is ridiculous and her test questions are on things that her students have never seen before. If you go to MUN and are doing chemistry try to take Fridgen or Warburton first because Karen is crazy asf.
Karen clearly cares about her students and wants to share her passion for chemistry with them. For the winter 2020 term, she did not use learning catalytics like in pervious terms. This is good because it allowed her to cover many more long answer examples in class. You must go to class as she does not post completed notes online; just powerpoints.
Great prof! I took Chem 1050 and 1051 with her, and got A+ in both! Would highly recommend to anyone, but be prepared to put in some work!
Overall, not that bad. Midterms arent easy but the final is. She can lecture on and on but the textbook is actually useful and clarifies what she says. Do the assignments and the textbook questions! She doesnt post her examples in D2L so you have to go to class. Hated her at first but have taken 2 of her courses now. Just be ready for some work!
Karen Hattenhauer is for sure one of the top 3 worst profs I've ever had. Her lectures are awful, she's rude when you ask for help and she can't teach the course material to save her life. I will NEVER take another course with this woman. If you're stuck with her do the labs and the assignments and pray that she marks the exams properly.
I took this course online during COVID-19. Her lectures were drawn out and sometimes the material was unclear when taught. The labs were easy, and the homework wasn't hard but there's quite a bit. A test every other week, labs, a few assignments, homework and a final exam. Tests are timed so make sure you know the material. Tutorials are mandatory!
She is fine if you cant choose anyone else, her lectures are long and boring, lots of homework, but the course material she provides is easy to understand and if you put in the work you will do good enough.
As someone who struggles with chem, I would not take a course with this prof again. Things were not explained in detail and her lectures were all over the place, which was very confusing with online learning. If I had a different prof I think I would have understood the material much better. Lots of work, homework, and assignments.
Dr. Hattenhauer seems like a good person outside of class, but in class she can be very confusing. There were 4 lectures a week, which is typically for chem, chapter quizzes and labs due every 2 weeks. The final exam was very stressful as you had to obtain 40% on the final exam in order to pass the course; if you did not get this you would get FAL
Horribly tough grader, doesn't take workings into account. Only wants the correct answer, if you don't get it you're screwed. She doesn't care about anything going on in your life and gets mad if you try to reschedule a quiz. Lectures suck, I've been teaching myself the content the whole time. If you have her and want to pass, BUY CHEGG!!
Lots and lots of assignments, however it gives lots of work to fall back on in case you do poorly on an exam or quiz. Her lectures are phenomenal and she is very good at responding to emails and answering questions. HIGHLY recommend. The assignments are quick except for the quizzes. Cannot recommend enough
Hattenhauer's them 1051 class was so extreme I would recommend taking it on its own, with no other courses. The lectures were very long and not helpful when it came to learning. Also, the quizzes were nothing like the practice material
She is so caring and explains the material very clearly. She gives fair tests and is very approachable. I would definitely recommend her!!
Doesn't do part marks at all, will fail you if you spell things wrong, one extra credit assignment but make sure you do it early because that is graded harshly too. Very dry and heavy lectures, seems like she expects this to be your only course.
Dr. Hattenhauer was very passionate in her teachings, and truly wanted her students to succeed. Her lectures contained a lot of content, but most of it was fairly straight forward. She tended to use dimensional analysis to work out in problems in class, which I wasn't a fan of, but it wasn't the only way to solve the problems.
I found Karen okay but her lectures were very long and very confusing and she often talked to fast to understand what she was saying. I didn't find the tests fair and there was a lot homework assignments. Overall I would not be take another class with her.
Clear instructions whats on the final exam. Shes a very fair grader, giving a generous amount of part marks for incorrect answers. Saying the course load is HEAVY would be an understatement, but not too difficult. Overall great prof, she wants the best and cares for her students. Lectures can often get dry bc shes passionate abt what shes teaching.
Karen makes things 10x more complicated than they need to be. Do not expect her to dumb ANYTHING down for your understanding, this woman would overexplain 1+1 if she could. However, she is extremely sweet, very approachable, and does want to her students to do well. The workload/material isnt bad at all, its just the way she teaches it.
An absolute gem and is actually great at teaching! She actively teaches which makes it much easier to understand what is going on in the class and actually learn concepts. She always tries to teach things and do examples in ways that everyone can understand. Would highly recommend!
Does not answer emails often therefore difficult to reach outside of class. Gives plenty of extra practice mini assignments as well as is lenient with due dates for them. Very helpful in class and wants to help you succeed.
Very passionate and sweet prof. However, she tends to overcomplicate certain topics. There's also in class questions which force you to go otherwise you'll lose marks. The homework assignments aren't too difficult and you do have weeks to complete them but you lose marks for every attempt on a question. It's not a lot but is annoying.
she is so ass it's not even funny, Teaches chemistry as if you already knew how to do it instead of teaching you how to do it
A nice person, but horrible professor. She NEVER responds to emails, makes the tests unnecessarily hard, and teaches things in the most confusing way possible. She would complicate 1+1 if possible. Expects you to already know how to do every single question. If you teach urself a easier way but it's not done through dimensional analysis its wrong.
She was nice but her slides did not explain things well so it was hard to go back and review. Her tests were easy but she gave no practice work whatsoever so it was hard to know what the questions would be like on tests. Would have benefited from taking more time for example questions in class.
Dr. Hattenhauer is a very sweet person but he made the material a lot more complicated than it had to be. the only thing that saved me was the fact majority of it is 2nd year high school chem saved me
Great professor, she seemed very genuine and passionate about her lectures. There are assignments pretty much every weekend and online questions during the lectures, which make you go to class. On the other hand, it makes the midterms and final worth less. A fair amount of work but if you go to class and try you will succeed. Would 100% recommend.
Dr. Hattenhauer is SO passionate about chemistry which makes it super easy to learn from her. She doesn't move over concepts too quickly which helps with retention. She cares about her students success. Highly recommend her.
Participation and practice is required to pass. She gave many assignments online that acted as a good review and practice. Sometimes she moved fast in lecture and could be difficult to understand but she will always clarified if asked. A lot of course content but the evaluations were fair. Would recommend her for this course.
Very passionate prof who is clearly very knowledgeable of the course material. Mastering chem assignments were great for eval review and cannot stress enough how important it is to know the WHY behind formulas, rather than just knowing them. If you learn the theory, it all comes super easy which is great as the theory is well-explained in lecture.
Attendance required for 85% of the class to receive full marks for participation. Lectures were decent but very back and forth from topic to topic which made taking notes hard. Barely any examples were given which made some of the topics harder to understand. The final was super easy and based on all the easiest topics, midterms were decent.
Do not recommend, did not prepare us at all compared to other Chem profs. Test were unbelievably hard. Often makes mistakes in lectures and will not correct herself. The amount of questions on a quiz is unbelievable, especially when they are all long answers. My math midterm has less questions then one of her quiz's for the same amount of time.
Engaging lectures, but could use more practice examples. Mastering Chem assignments are great for review, and unstuck ai helped supplement the course material. Overall an interesting class, just requires consistent effort to succeed.
She is a sweet person and obviously has a lot of passion for chemistry, but she is not a good professor. She overcomplicates everything to a point where it'd be more beneficial to teach yourself rather than pay attention during her lectures. You are expected to complete questions very** quickly, both on tests and for in-class participation.
Very passionate about Chemistry. Her in person tests were quite difficult, but there are plenty of online assignments (in person and outside of classroom) that make up a lot of marks, so it kind of balances out. The final was very fair. Overall, I enjoyed having her, she made a 9AM lecture enjoyable, and she is very approachable.
Karen is very passionate about chemistry and is very engaging during class. She offered tutorials before exams and seems to enjoy teaching a lot, even at the first year level. Overall a W teacher for a very difficult course.
Karen is incredibly passionate and caring! Although I found her tests challenging, they prepare you well for the final, and she gives plenty of Mastering Chemistry assignments and Learning Catalytics to boost your grade. Make sure you stay on top of the material and understand the theory to do well :)
Make no mistake, Karen's class is not a free A. She expects you to put in the work, but she does it to prepare you for the final (which was very fair). She's very sweet and passionate during her lectures, but she focused on the theory more than the calculations, making her quizzes challenging (not a lot of examples to study)
She was overall a decent prof, nothing super good but nothing super bad either. Her quizzes/midterms were super long & difficult, but the final exam was pretty straight forward and fair. She also goes a bit fast but I believe thats just the pace of chem 1050/1051 course in general. Plenty of small assignments to up your grade. Overall pretty good!
She is an amazing prof. I had her for chem 1050 and she made the concepts easy to understand and explained them well! I genuinely enjoyed going to that class so much thanks to her. Her tests were challenging and hard but never bad and definitely helped me feel prepared for when the final exam came along!
Dr Hattenhauer was a very knowledgeable professor with a clear understanding of concepts. Term tests are difficult compared to other profs. Explains concepts too quickly in many instances. Easily accessible outside of class and a nice person. If you wish to move forward in chemistry, I would recommend Dr. Hattenhauer
Karen is a very caring and nice person however her tests and assignments were incredibly difficult, much more so than other profs classes. However, I do feel like this prepared me more for the final exam. You will have to put in a lot of hours studying to do well in the course, however she is easily available to ask questions during or after class.
Great professor. Her lectures were very engaging and informative. She does a very good job of explaining concepts and demonstrating how/why they work and how they relate to previous material. Thoroughly enjoyed this course.
Karen is very knowledgeable and kind; however, her ability to convey this knowledge to the student could be improved. I found the lectures hard to follow without any real world examples or clear demonstrations. Also, there is not enough homework, and the problems are too easy, leaving you unprepared for the tests. The tests are very difficult.
The type of prof whos proud to have a low passing rate.
Karen's very passionate about her teachings, but she will talk to the class like they're children and it can be painful to sit through. Her tests are extremely long, midterm 1 little to no people finished in time. She wants you to succeed but she doesn't do a very good job actually helping. Lectures are very disorganized.
Karen was pretty good. This is no free A. Her tests were difficult but if you do old practice exams and textbook questions you will find very similar questions on her tests. Her class extremely prepares you for the final as it is much easier compared to her complex tests. Overall a good teacher and is happy to explain when topics are misunderstood.
Professor Hattenhauer is very passionate about teaching chemistry, her tests are difficult but fair as long as you study enough. She does a good job at teaching the lecture content so that students understand and does plenty of examples in class.
