Classtime was a waste..time better spent reading the textbook. Grades easy on papers. Tests can be tricky, but do-able.
graded paper hard, test are tricky, watch out, she is hard core at grading
Awesome lecturer. If you read the book and pay attention in class, you should do well. There are two extremely easy papers. She also lets you drop your lowest test grade. My favorite professor ever.
Her lectures are interesting yet time consuming. Some things she was quite "anal" about. If she didn't take off points for attendance, you could get a A in the class just reading the material esp.the study guide.(i totally agree that classtime was
I liked her but her tests are too long to finish during a reg. class time. The tests are hard and long but you have to read the study guide!
She makes class time interesting but tests and grades hard. Fair but you will earn your grade. Attendance important with her, sometimes surprises with extra credit for it. I learned a lot and would take another class with her any day.
Very hard tests, lectures are pointless, very confusing class, wouldn't recommend taking this teacher to ANYONE!!! BEWARE!!!
Good professor but you have to study and apply yourself. She gave us written notes which were very helpful for tests but they were still tricky. Tough grader but overall knows her subject and communicates it well. Interesting lectures in class.
Good teacher. Interesting classes and pretty fair tests. Is very big on attendence though.
Dr. H.J. was great! Yes she is a hard grader and her tests are a bit difficult..But as weird as it may sound..It is all worth it..I have carried a lot of my knowledge from her class to other classes..I am considering taking her for Ed. Psych. She is well established in her profession.. Great PROF! I rank Dr. H.J. up there with Dr. Marion Underwood!
Great class taught by a great professor. She's very good at explaining concepts and I left the course quite satisfied. For exams, Dr. HJ typically uses multiple choice, so you'll get to relax a little and use recognition -- but don't relax too much, because these are NOT blowoff tests.

I really enjoyed her class. She was very nice, very reasonable with workload, and very approachable.
The tests are harder than you think they will be..multiple choice, but like they sound like every answer could be correct
Good class! Nice teacher! Very helpful! Test multiple choice. 1 semi hard paper and lots of journal entrys very easy do them helps with the grade! Big on attendance and being on time! plan on going to class
Good class with great teacher. Tests were hard but fair, class was interesting. Assignments regular but not too much. All in all, would recommend her. You will learn a lot. Doesn't ever let out early, though.
I love this class, but it's my thing. I don't know how hard it is if you just come to class and study a little before the tests, but if you read the text book (or a lot of it), the tests are really easy. It's just the right amount of challenge and interest level for an undergraduate class.
I have her for Educational Psychology and it is a great class. If you come to the lectures, do the reading, and keep up with the journals there is no reason you can't make a high B or an A in her class. She is interesting to listen to and you take a lot away from her lectures. I would definitely take her class again.
I think Dr. HJ is very nice. If you need help with a paper or anything she is very easy to talk with and will def help you out. As long as you go to class and READ you will do just fine. But seriously, read the book!!
Had her for 3 classes. She is fun and interesting, but difficult at the same time. Her personality and teaching style is worth the extra study time though. I wish there were more of her classes to take. My only complant was that I had her for 3 semesters in a row and she never learned my name...oh well.
Professor is very intelligent and competent. Tests are difficult, take good notes and study. Class is hard, but I took this class previously with someone else- this professor is right for the class
ok, so if your a student fresh out of county college, DO NOT take this professor. she only repeats things once, she is deceiving, although her knowledge is high- she will trick you at the end of the semester. it DOES NOT matter how HARD you try, there is NO LEEWAY WITH HER. take her if you MUST,but at all costs avoid this professor. very TOUGH.
FABULOUS teacher! Her teaching style is very fun and clear. Learn the concepts more than definitions. Ask for help when you need it - she's great about doing what she can to help you!
Dr. H.J. is an excellent instructor! Her lectures are clear, there's high class participation and learning resources are amply provided. Exams are multi-choice and the materials involve higher-levels of understanding to do well. *Pay close attention to the syllabus - she gives explicit instructions on assignments and will dock for deviating.*
You definitely have to put in effort into this class. She does give pretty hard exams. Pay attention to the lectures and take good notes. Also read the chapters before class or else you will be completely lost! Also read the study guide and use the book's website. It's helpful. Good luck:)
Greatest prof ever. Interesting. Just go to class pay attention and skim over book.
This is my favorite class. The class is not hard. Just read the book, like with any other class. And use your study guide. She is upbeat and fast paced. I love her teaching style. She's nice and knows everything about the subject.
Yes this woman expects everyone to take her class as priority! I had to carry the textbook every just to make a passing grade. Class is not mandatory so I take the quiz and leave. No point staying, might as well stay home and read textbook. No reviews, she doesn't narrow the chapters down, only study quest. she picks like 3 out of 30 to put on text
She truly does expect this one class to be your main priority. Classes are useless - I normally leave at break once we take the quiz. If you read the book and use the on-line book resource you'll do fine. Tests are tricky, but MC. If she finds a question that lots of people got wrong, she still won't give you credit. Would NOT recommend!!
I see a lot of bashing her classes. She is an excellent teacher, and people who can't pass her classes probably don't do well in other classes. He lectures explain the chapters. if you pay attention and read the chapters you will do fine. and she grades extemely fair. she trows in extra questions so help your grade out.
All I have to say is that her tests are HARD!! But I heard that they would help with the Teacher Certification Test so I guess it helps. I like how she teaches but she is hard. There are a lot of things that you could do to raise your grade though. You must read the book or you won't pass the tests. USE THE FOCUS GUIDE FROM THE STUDY GUIDE BOOK!
Fist of..if this is ur 1st year,, don't take her.. her tests are amazingly hard. paper is easy and every day journals are too.She doesnt care if u pass or fail..Her tests are impossible to pass..The study guide and the book will not help you pass her class, you need to think outside the box.. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IN THE SUMMER.. YOU WILL FAIL..
I very much enjoyed this class. I learned how to learn and be successful in any class. I took it in the Summer and got an A, so it can be done if you engage meaningfully with the right attitude.
Classes were usually interesting. I enjoyed the content. Tests really hard. I failed the first 2 but managed to pass with a B! You have to learn how to take her tests.
Huxtable is rude. She doesn't really care.... This class really doesnt prepare you for teaching in any way what so ever. Its pretty much common since. The final exam was hard. Use the work book to help you. She doesnt really help you if you go to office hours she pretty much just tells you what you got wrong... I would not recommend.
Tests are really hard!!!! I enjoyed her lectures. You must read the book! Many different teaching tools. Will help you if you ask.
This teacher is horrible. she is mad at the world and will make your life miserable. she gives good info about life. but if u want to pass, good luck. because her tests are intense & impossible to get higher than a 30%
You will only do well in this class if you read each chapter assigned and attend her classes (some test questions are taken from the study guide as well). You have to attend class if you want to understand the material on the tests (and pass). She filters the material in lecture to make it easier to remember, but some stuff is only in book as well.
You have to attend the class and read the book to do well. The teacher provides videos and other supplementary resources to help you learn. It was an interesting subject. I would take another class with her again.
One of the hardest classes I've ever taken. If you like to fail, this class is for you. She provides vague study guides that take forever to do and words her tests in ways that regular people can't understand. She is a nice person, but her tests are amazingly hard. You HAVE to read and come to class every time.
Cold , not approachable. I showed her a draft of my paper she looked at and said its fine. I turned in she gave me and F. I still made a B in the class.
this woman is the absolute WORST professor i have ever encountered at my life! she doesn't offer any additional help at all - her lectures are wack - tests are ridiculous - she gave my friend an F on the term paper because she apparently double-spaced incorrectly on the reference page, no other comments were even made on her paper besides that!!!
I felt that Dr. Huxtable-Jester is a really knowledgable professor with a lot of very uselful insight. She is amazingly smart and her tests are challenging, but if you do what you are recommended to do (use the study guide) you will make at least a B in her class. I really enjoyed her class and her lectures. She knows her stuff.
Everything is in her perspective. If you don't think the way that she does then you will have a difficult time on her test questions, which are not exactly clear. If you ask her to clarify, she will literally just read the question back to you.
This is one of those classes that makes people at UTD think that psych is an easy major. It is not. She expects students to be stunned by crazy experiments she tells about when they are the exact same ones we have already read in the book. A watered down, less interesting version of intro to psych. Material is easy, class unbearable.
This is my second time to take Huxtable and sadly I have to take her next semester. Her exams are impossible. Do not even considering going to her office hours, she is useless. She has so much petty work in her classes and has come out and admitted to the class how she doesnt want to do an in class assignment because she is lazy! DO NOT TAKE HER!!!
Go through the study guide before every exam, and you'll be fine. Attend class and do the work, she's not a very hard teacher.
this has been the worst professor i have ever encountered...her tests are verbose and tricky...her lectures are useless...i recommend reading the chapter and taking your own notes...basically, teach yourself the material if you want to survive...or DO NOT TAKE HER!
This class was not bad. If you do all of your journals, turn in the online work, and show up to class, you can make an A. All I did was read the book the night before the test and I made a B. A little hard work and you can do better than me.
I enjoyed the class very much. I found the content extremely interesting, and it was about everything I always wanted to know in Psychology. I heard lots of bad things about the professor. The tests are pretty long (53 multiple choice questions) but I used the study guide and made an A in every one. I recommend her.
really bad teacher, she expected you to do things outside of basic coursework like CPR papers that are completey pointless. I talked to many students who were taking this class as an elective and it dropped their GPA. i had no choice but to take her bc its a core class for me. i wouldnt reccommend her at all. ps her degree isnt even in psy!
Unfortunately, she is not a good professor. She wants to teach her entire career to you in one semester. She needs to focus on a few subjects of social psy, not the ENTIRE book. I did not enjoy her teachings or her attitude. I highly recommend if you have other classes do not take this class.
After one class I realized that all the comments posted on KHJ are true. She gives too few explanations on the subject & dedicates too much time on pointless, tedious things like CPR. CPR should be eliminated. It is time consuming & distracting from the subject I signed up for. Class is rather unstructured & disorganized.
If you are looking for an easy class with easy tests based on recall don't take this class. Prof. HJ is very intelligent, a great instructor, has high expectations of her students & will help you with any questions you have. Great preparation for life. Study text book, study guide, notes and pay attention. You CAN make an A but you must put effort.
Very interesting class, intelligent & engaging instructor. She covers a lot of material & gives a lot of extra work BUT since tests are hard, that's where you can make extra points so don't complain! Study the text book+notes+study guide. Tests are think outside the box so don't memorize - UNDERSTAND material.
This professor apparently used to teach 3rd grade. She is a firm believer in busy work. 2--1 page journals each week that are only worth 3 points each. GOod luck getting the entire 3 points. Her tests are ridiculously hard. my advise is to take another class, if you have the option.
KHJ is the epitomy of a great professor. She doesn't spoon feed students but she is extremely helpful and will work with you if you don't understand something. Lectures are fast paced, uses video clips so not boring at all. You will make A if you put in the effort. CPR & journals teach you to write properly and think critically. Class worth taking!
Dr Huxtable class is indeed very hard, but if you study, attend class and take notes you will do fine in her class. She looks scary to approach to but she is a very nice and sweet person. I would take another class with her.
Everyone says her classes are so hard but really as long as you're paying attention and study a bit outside of class you'll be fine. A few questions on the tests are difficult but for the most part they're straightforward if you just know the material. CPR assignments were pointless and a waste of time but at least they were an easy grade.
Dr. Huxtable is an extremely difficult professor. She really expects undergraduate students to be at the graduate level for this type of class. You are expected to know how to do everything on your own, therefore she doesn't explain anything...Don't take her for this class.
Stay away from this teacher and do not take Psy3360 with her. She treats undergraduate students as PHD students. Will not help the students at all. half of the class failed, I am not sure whyt she still teaches.
Very hard teacher. Unfair to students. Not helpfull at all. Do not take any Psychology with her.
This class is lots of work but if you complete everything and make an effort to do well you will. The main thing is to complete the work. It isn't hard, just time consuming.
Hard! Hard! Hard. Do not take .
no comments, very hard teacher
Interesting class, if psychology major you should take it. Learned a lot, read the text, go to class, takes notes, and go to exam reviews. She does not give pointless assignments, journals get you thinking. Teaches well.
Professor Huxtable-Jester is a wonderful professor! From the first day of class she explained what we needed to do to succeed: attend lecture, take notes, do practice tests in study guide, and read the textbook. The text is an easy read & the required journals are simple to do. Her exams were always fair & relevant in content.
Extremely hard teacher that made me prove my worth. I appreciate that she treated her students like adults & expected excellence. She made me do my best at every turn. I will never forget the lessons I learned academically & professionally. Thanks to her rigorous classes I've excelled beyond my peers & mentors professionally since graduation.
I have taken KHJ two times in a row. She is an excellent teacher although her test are very tricky!! I did well in her Social psych class. You have to put in time for her classes to do well. Do not get lazy or you will fail. I recommend her if you are looking for a challenge
She is an incredible professor. Although her tests are very tricky, she doesn't just give you information and want you to regurgitate it, you must learn it. Her journals, lectures, and tests make sure you understand the concepts you are learning. She is challenging, but very, very worth it for all psychology majors. Very precise and clear too!
Took Exp Proj. with her. AVOID AT ALL COST! There's an intense amount of writing, and she wont teach you how to do it. she'll tell you to go online and do it yourself. Seriously, unless you're intensely interested in psychology and look forward to writing a psych book, YOU NEED TO AVOID HER! take someone else. I cried taking her class.
She sets clear expectations at beginning of class, attendance is highly recommended as what she talks about is absolutely relevant for testing. You must read, do homework and work study guide to be able to decipher questions on the test. She is a very good professor but she does expect you to work hard.
Attendence isn't mandatory but she does take attendence to help the people that come to class. Journals are due weekly but the format is easy and take less than 30 minutes to complete. Testing is applied testing which is confusing sometimes, but requires thinking. Lectures are fun and informative. She was nice and get questions answered timely.
Excellent lectures. You will learn a lot. She's also super funny. Tests are hard, but manageable if you read all the assigned reading. If you stick to the syllabus you can make an A.
I do not like her class curriculum. The response papers are confusing. It is very difficult. If you dont read the book then you are SCREWED! The tests are right from the book and its difficult. HER CLASS RUINED MY GPA! Do not take her. She is very though but I dont like her classes.
Social psych- she is all over the place with lecture. Journals are really important. In class activities for extra grade boost at the end. Attended 40% of lecture. Made an A.
This class is not as hard as people say it is. Her lectures were pretty good - probably on my top 10 list at UTD. I got an A in her class and I barely opened my book. Tests were multiple choice and she goes over them after they're graded. All you have to do is study her slides and show up to class - seriously. Also, don't over-think things.
I have taken many psychology classes, and the basic ideas carry over to each class, but in this class, she worded things extremely poorly that made me question what I have learned before. Her tests usually have more than one right answer and are again, worded poorly. I did not like this class. I learned what I needed by reading the book, not her.
she is NOT a good teacher at all. Most of her test questions are unclear and are stories, and not definitions; and about the research discussed in class. Reflection essays help your grade. Expect to get a B if you're an A student.
She is a great teacher. BUT YOU HAVE TO WORK! Her classes are not for the lazy. I attended class, read the assigned readings, and completed the test review! I GOT AN "A". She is not hard, but she will challenge you. You definitely need her book, and time outside of class to complete readings/reviews
Do NOT take this professor, she doesn't have a love for students. She gets confused on the course material and has to have the class answer questions for her. Doesn't care to help you in any situation even if you try hard, do the work and show up to class. Seriously, try to find any other professor rather than Huxtable.
She is really nice; however, you have to really read the text. DO NOT use her lectures as a guide on what to study for! Use the focus questions & application exercises to guide you (the Q's are situational and the app. exercises will help). Don't miss class and do every journal and peer review. I did the above and got 48/50 on all exams!
HARD HARD HARD. This teacher is very knowledgeable in her field but does not effectively teach the class. Much of the class leads into discussion over one topic and does not cover anything else the whole time. Her exams are poorly worded and each question is a novel to read. Avoid at all costs!
I heard from ex-students of hers that she was a difficult professor, but she has since re-vamped her coursework. Her lectures are interesting, the discussions are fun, and the videos are entertaining. Read the book and go to class, and you'll be fine. The separate study guide book is sort of helpful, but definitely not required by any means.
She's a good professor, but you will have to read the textbook to get A's on the tests, which are pretty thorough. Lectures are also helpful, but since I read the chapters, I found the lectures kind of pointless. I would have skipped her class if attendance wasn't mandatory.
Her lectures are decent; although she is a self-professed cynic. This overall negativity is reflected in her lecture and interaction with students. She requires weekly short essay submissions, which are non negotiable. Her tests are very tough; serious studying is necessary. I did poorly in her class; retook with Dr Santrock and made an A.
For Social Psych, she's great. Buy the workbook that accompanies the text and you will do just GREAT. My lowest test score was still an A. However, I took her for Social and Personality and it was a trainwreck. She contradicts herself frequently, and the tests are very specific. I know she wants the best for her students, so she may improve.
She's a good teacher, discussions are interesting. You must read all the chapters assigned in order for you to do your online discussion (8 total if you get a perfect score). Test are hard, and questions are out of the book. Definitely a hard teacher. If you like to read, and able to read 12 chapters word by word then she's your kind of teacher.
Huxtable should never be a teacher, or anything that relates to teaching. She does not have sympathy for students, and always thinks that she is right. Expects students to do best, but her test are set to fail. Need help? better change class because she won't talk to you. Her ego is too high too admit that she is a failure as an educator.
Huxtable is not difficult and I am having difficultly understanding why many believe so. If you are a true lover of psychology, you will enjoy her Social Psych class, her method of teaching is engaging and leaves embedded understanding of material. While reading the textbook, pay attention to specific research studiesresults and you'll be fine.
Psychology is my favorite subject, but after a class with her. I hate it! I learned nothing from her. I never missed a class, I wrote down everything she said, I read the chapters, I did the discussions, application questions, and focus questions. Yet, I did not get one A on any of her tests. Her tests are so difficult. :(
don't take this class if you want an easy one. plan to read and study a ton.
I have never worked so hard for a C in my life.
THIS WAS THE HARDEST CLASS OF MY LIFE. I STUDIED EVERY SINGLE NIGHT FOR THIS CLASS AND STILL CAN'T SEEM TO PASS A SINGLE TEST. HER TESTS ARE SET UP FOR YOU TO FAIL!!! I WOULDN'T RECOMMEND THIS CLASS TO ANYONE!! PSYCHOLOGY WILL BE THE DEATH OF ME!!
Having a hard time understanding why so many people aren't doing better in her classes. Yeah, you can expect to read the textbook: welcome to adulthood. The course material is interesting, & she doesn't force you to buy the newest version of the text. Get the handbook that goes along & there's really no way you can fail. She's always helpful too.
As an education teacher, she fails on her lectures, tests, and grades. I definitely do not recommend her.
Dr Huxtable's class would be worth taking even for those who are not considering the field of education because it teaches you strategies for learning, as well as the theory of educational psychology. I've just passed my TEXES exams, and I plan on referencing my notes from this class a lot this coming year!
Dr. H is a nice person, and her lectures are informative and engaging. However, 90% of the material on the test is from the book. You WILL NEEED THE BOOK (you will fail if you don't). Her test are poorly worded and VERY HARD. She has you do 3 papers, which helps, and "mandatory extra credit." If you can avoid taking her class I would. GOOD LUCK!
It's hard to rate it in these few numbers, but long story short - nothing she teaches in lecture will be very helpful on the exam. I, many times, would get the clicker questions all 100% correct, and then I would get to the test and have never seen the info. The concepts are SO simple, but she words the tests horribly. The study guide helps.
Overall social psyc is an interesting course to begin with. She knows the contents well. Very nice and approachable. She make the exams unnecessarily tricky n hard. If you are looking for an A you better spend at least 3 to 4 hours on a chapter. you have to know the content forward and backward in order to pass her exams. 5 exams and 30 online diss
Grading scale is screwed up. When I took it, it was full credit or no credit for each of her 3 papers. Her tests are poorly worded. If you do take the class, make sure to buy the book and understand it. Reading the book is essential for the tests- attendance is necessary for participation pts. which is 25 pts.
Try to avoid this professor.
Always willing to help (OFFICE HOURS!), lectures well, and challenges you to think and integrate the material- this is not a rote class. If you behave like a college student (read: adult) and put in the work, you'll get an A. The people complaining expect community college level of participation: this is not that kind of professor or school.
Dr. Huxtable was my favorite prof in my time at UTD. I took several of her classes and always learned so much. The thing you have to understand is her exams make you apply what you learned to real situations. Memorizing isn't going to help you, you have to get it on a conceptual level. Her teaching prepped me for the work I now do- earning my PhD!
This is probably the most accurate rating for her class: She does not cover everything in her lectures (which are really good) so you should be ready to read and understand every chapter to get an A! Her tests are hard because they are application-based and you have to literally know everything to do good on them. She asks very specific stuff.
Honestly one of the best professors. She understands teaching and uses all of the best strategies. She encompasses a true teacher. The course is TOUGH but so worth it. She has so many aids to help you online and wants you to succeed. Tests are application based so you have to know HOW to use material and not only what a term is.
Helps to read the book. Most of the lectures consist of classmates sharing stories that relate to the topic being discussed she goes over material but not as much as I would like. Her test are though, no reviews or study guides. She does go over the test the next class meeting and you get the chance to see what you missed.
She teaches and tests in concepts, you can't pass solely by remembering definitions, but know them to apply them. So if she's vague, and you're not sure, speak up! Or the test will get you. You'll need both the book and her lecture. Plenty of extra credit. Half of your participation grade is actual participation, read ahead, the book is light.
For those saying her tests are poorly worded, they are not poorly worded, you simply have to be skilled in picking out key words and conceptualizing, if you're not, that can't be helped. Poor wording is not the same as wording that isn't easy. Pay attention to the many examples given in class and poor critical thinking skills are less of a problem.
Some of the answers she chooses to questions are arbitrary or illogical, and she'll sometimes say "well that's explained in the book", when it isn't. She won't listen to feedback. She hears it, but doesn't listen. It's a good topic and she discusses it well. But if she's going to test so much, her tests should be better representative.
Halfway through the semester the class feels long and makes me want to die. She tests on material that's in the book, but not discussed in class. She requires a response clicker that costs 40+. If you miss more than two classes then your participation grade is 0.
She is a conceptual teacher, so she grades to application and not definition. You cannot pass by simply memorizing the information, you have to know the material and be able to apply it. This class is not hard. People on here complaining seem to just expect to show up and pass. Earning a grade seems to be a lost concept. Put in the work and pass.
Understanding concepts is enough. She doesn't do trick questions. Tries to help as best she can. READ THE TEXTBOOK
Interesting class that is made unnecessarily difficult (she admits to making tests hard/tricky on purpose) as the material is really not that hard. Read the text or you have zero chance on tests. Weekly online discussions (2) and attendance counts towards grade. She's nice enough and accessible if you ask, just unnecessarily hard in my opinion.
Very good professor, and passionate about teaching. No electronics in class and attendance is pretty much mandatory. You have to read to pass her tests. She assigns discussion boards which help you study. Do the work and you should do well.
Overall a great professor. A lot of people say that she is difficult and words her tests poorly, but this is not the case. If you follow the study guidelines she gives you (the objectives for each chapter) and make a study guide before each exam there is no reason you should not make an A. She's very passionate and will help if you ask.
She's not awful, but she expects a lot for kids who she
The professor gives plenty of chances for extra credit, and what she discusses in lecture will usually be on the test. There aren't any surprises. Don't forget to read the textbook for test preparation!
Show up to class, period. Do your homework because it allows you to know the material for the test. Tests are more difficult so be sure to participate in class. I've read one page of the textbook but other classmates said that reading the book is how they knew the material, so you should probably read for an easy A.
If you are a student of the college of Behavior and Brain Science, this professor may be unavoidable. Very knowledgeable, very passionate about subject matter, but unnecessarily difficult. You have to be on time or you will miss credit. Attendance is mandatory to pass her class. No reviews for exams, no study guides, period.
The people who are saying that she gives no exam review are completely incorrect. She gives a thorough study guide for each exam (except for the cumulative final) on e-learning. You MUST read the book in order to pass the exams. If you do this and do the review you can get an A. Extra credit is offered on the exams (3 extra credit questions).
To pass her class you need to know the book inside and out and be able to apply each definition, strategy etc that is taught to different situation slides don't help much as it was just a summary of the information that your assignments should have, which are due every class period, these are your study guides so make sure you put effort in them.
Homework required to be posted online prior to the beginning of lecture 16 total, drops lowest 4. Group discussion to go over material, then peer review homework assignments and provide feedback after lesson. 4 lessons per exam. No study guide or review provided. Really expects you to learn how to apply material, not just memorization
I took this course because I enjoyed her Social Psychology class so much! There is a lot more work required for this course than Social, but I felt I learned a lot more because it was necessary for me to complete work so I could be graded for it. You'll really despise the handouts at first, but they force you to learn and integrate the material.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Worst professor ever! Class is unnecessarily hard. Tests are near impossible. Textbook is useless (she admits this, doesn't care). She doesn't teach, you have to teach yourself. You're supposed to learn from your peers who are as equally lost as you. Loads of work. No test review. No direction. No help. Not clear. Not worth it!
She makes you read the book and so some unnecessary discussion board posts but they honestly do help you remember the material. If you go to class and read you will be fine. Her tests aren't the easiest, but all in all she's a nice person and good teacher. I liked the class
I loved this professor. She was an articulate, interesting lecturer and a very fair grader. I highly recommend her.
It's been a while since I took her class. Nothing to complain of, nothing to rave about. A very straightforward grader and class. I overstudied for this class and I didn't need to. Just put in a reasonable amount of effort and you'll do well.
I took Dr. Huxtable for a hybrid class and regret it. Would have enjoyed listening to her lecture, but in the hybrid class you just do group activities. Downside is that we had 9 exams all in the testing center and had to read A LOT, but she is super sweet.
You must thoroughly read the textbook to pass exams. Exam questions can be tricky and reference very specific details in the textbook. Her lectures were not helpful. In fact, I rarely wrote more than a few words in my spiral during class. She just skims info and doesn't go over it. Had to learn outside of class on my own.
One of those professors who doesn't give a single care towards her students' grades. Tests are very detailed towards the textbooks. Read footnotes. Attendance is mandatory and will hurt your grade if you don't attend, but the classes themselves are useless. Clickers are needed. Discussions are an easy part of course. Rest of it was pure hard work.
Dr. Huxtable-Jester is one of the best lecturers I've ever met. Lectures are engaging and enjoyable. She's very seasoned and she teaches class from an application standpoint. You have to understand the concepts, then be able to apply them in discussion posts and exams. I would definitely take her again.
Dr. Huxtable is AMAZING. She is an amazing lecturer and I would love to take her Social Psych course again. You HAVE TO READ THE BOOK if you want to make an A or B. Inarguable. There are clicker questions which she takes for attendance and the attendance is the difference between an A and a B. She is very interactive and really laidback. Take her.
Discussion posts due on each chapter that you do at home so technically "homework heavy." But the discussions are easy to do! She gives you about a week to schedule and take each exam in the testing center and then an ADDITIONAL week after that to retake it. She is warm and funny. Attendance is important. Have to read the textbook. Lectures are fun
Prof Huxtable provides clear instructions on how to do well in the class. Study guides and additional material is provided. You do have to read the textbook. Attendance is highly encouraged! Discussion boards required but easy. She cares and is available outside of class. Would enroll in any of her classes!
Dr. Huxtable is one of those professors you love to interact with, but test anxiety sets in big time. I'm not an Education major so her exams were a little intense for me. However, she gives you two chances on her four exams. The final even includes a pre-final the week prior so you know what you're working with before the big exam.
She gives you 2 tries on every exam. You MUST read the textbook to pass your exams. She gives out a study guide that is basically just you writing a summary for every paragraph in the textbook. Another heads up.. her exams always have more than one right answer. She randomly takes attendance for a grade.
Expectations on assignments and tests are very clearly laid out. The rigor was perfect; not too hard, not too easy. Seems to really care about your grade in the class, so she's open to feedback in both directions. She really tried her best to make sure we understood the content, and I feel that she succeeded.
Most of her exams come directly out of the textbook - beware of the little details, she will put them on the exam. Weekly discussion journals from the information from the textbook too. I only passed this class by intensely reading the textbook and stayed in class for the participation/attendance grade.
Professor is great, lecture is interesting, between the textbook and online materials and lecture you have everything you need to make great grades but you do have to put in the work. This is a class where you get out what you put in, less time lower grade. Lots of opportunities to improve grade w/optional activities & options to take tests over.
Good lecturer and exams can be retaken for a better score. However, attendance is mandatory. It's worth a sizable percentage of your grade and if you miss more than 4 classes, you get a 0 for the whole attendance category. I went from an A to a B+ because of this. Go to class and read the book and you'll be fine.
exams get 2 tries each, but they are out of a 700 question word bank :) questions/answers are very ambiguous, "pick the best correct answer when they're all correct" type of exams :) READ THE BOOK FOR THE EXAMS! EVERY DETAIL AND RESEARCH STUDY MENTIONED IS ALWAYS ON THE EXAM. it's a teach yourself and hope for the best type of class.
Exams can be tricky but as long as you can apply the terms to hypothetical questions, be able to distinguish how terms differ then you will be fine. If you are a psych major a lot of content is review- operant, classical conditioning, behaviorism, Piaget, and other psych concepts that are basic. I enjoyed her lectures! Weekly discussions are easy
Every test has three trials, and best score prevails. Gives extra credit and lectures are extremely informative and interesting. I enjoyed going to class because each lecture was engaging and well planned out.
She allows 3 tries for every exam but this prof has a test bank with over 700 questions that she pulls from for each exam. WITHOUT THE TEXTBOOK YOU WILL FAIL. test questions come from literally anything including footnotes, videos, and small comments from class. I have never failed a class before this prof. She's a very tough grader on assignments!
She allows three tries for each exam except the final. Weekly discussion board has a big impact on your grade. Final is mandatory. Go to class because you don't know when she might take attendance. Textbook helps a lot. Class is discussion over topics that you will eventually end up going home and teaching yourself. Only take this class if needed.
She's a strong lecturer and gives you three tries for every test except the final. There's a lot of in-class activities that make up a fair amount of your grade so you definitely don't want to skip class. Besides the exams, there's other assignments that are taken for a grade that make up a big chunk of your final grade, which I thought was nice!
Her class is interesting. She is caring and understanding. But the exams are just confusing and complicated. However, good luck! You will pass!
Dr. Huxtable is a very sweet and caring professor, but her class was very difficult, mostly due to the fact that the exams are word for word from the textbook and so specific that its almost impossible to really prepare. I felt like instead of really learning I was memorizing a book. The only thing that saved me was the 3 tries on each exam.
Her class in intiresting and she is well prepared for lectures. She provides many resources for studying for her tests on elearning. If you read the text book and study the example questions she provides on elearning, the tests are not too bad. She also does some extra credit and cares about the success of her class.
The tests are difficult and the questions make no sense. She gives you three tries but that is because you will fail them unless you have the ability to memorize the textbook. She does not really teach the class. She just talks. You are better off teaching yourself in this class.
Inspirational! Dr. Huxtable truly cares about each student. Allows you to try 3 different times for the exam (doesn't mean they are easy or the same questions!) She makes you work for your grade truly testing if you can apply content and real understanding. HAVE TO READ THE BOOK!
One of the most horrendous classes I've taken. Don't get me wrong, Huxtable is a great lecturer, and the retests are great. However, even though attendance IS MANDATORY, you do not need to attend class at all to ace the exams. Why? Because the entire course is based on one entire textbook. So have fun memorizing the entire book. Absolutely awful.
I will never take her again. She is a nice person but her strategy for teaching makes it hard to practice what I need learn for the future.
She is super sweet and considerate, one of the least judgmental professor I've had, but that sometimes leads to the class getting moderately out of control which is a bit obnoxious. To be fair I am sure it's not easy to control 100+ college students. She will have a lecture after the tests so do not plan on leaving early. Lectures are a bit tough.
Shes super sweet but terrible in her tests. Attendance is a must but the lectures have nothing to do with what youre being tested on. Read your material ahead of time and do not cram. The reviews she gives are VERY helpful. She gives 3 chances to take the test and study hard for each one because these tests are not easy.
Only way to do good is MEMORIZE the textbook. Each exam has 3 attempts but that's because they're hard & come from a huge question bank. Don't leave reading & note-taking until the end because you will cry. Take all 3 test attempts because some questions repeat. Do the other assignments because they'll boost your grade.
She really wants you to succeed and get good grades, but also wants you to understand and relate to the material. She gives ample opportunity to make good grades like extra credit and 3 attempts for each test. Attendance and textbook matter, her study objectives and practice questions help a lot. Lectures are interesting and easy to understand.
I really enjoyed my time in social psych! Her lectures made a night class entertaining, and she gives 3 tries for each exam. You HAVE to read the book for the exams to get all of the info you need, but attendance is a part of your grade and the in-class exam places an emphasis on the info discussed in class. The journals help boost your grade too.
She's really passionate about the course content. Is quite helpful to ask questions or provide additional material with. A negative I would say is that the due dates she assigns are quite confusing. There's usually 4-6 things due every week, each with a separate due date.
I took her class this spring and I really enjoyed it. Although it was a night class, she managed to make our class enjoyable. When we moved to online learning, she was quick to respond to emails and was very understanding, both in-person and online. The tests were somewhat difficult; make sure to read the textbook!
Recent animosity towards the name 'Karen' brought back a fond old memory: taking a course in Social Psychology from Ms. Huxtable-Jester. It was a very inspirational and insightful course about why humans behave the way we do. She impressed me as a very understanding and thoughtful person, exuding compassion in a way that is secular and rational.

I thoroughly enjoyed this class. The reason for the 4 rating was just how much work she required. I easily spent 4+ hrs on homework every week. It was online because of covid, so hopefully she's just figuring it out, and will edit for future semesters. LOTS of writing required. She is very knowledgeable and passionate, and I enjoyed her lectures.
Dr. Huxtable is great, I enjoyed her class and I learned alot.
I've taken social PSYCH/EDUPSYCH (both during COVID) with her and she's hands down the BEST professor I've had. You don't have to do a crazy amount of studying, or worry about tests. All I'd do was a few DB posts every sunday, an easy quiz and a small activity assignment. NO exams, nothing else. I have no idea why here rating isn't much higher.
Lots of work but a pretty easy class if you keep up with your assignments.
Shes kind and sweet, and an easy grader. Her quizzes are openly available, and she knows it, but wants us to live by the honest rule. Shes huge on discussion boards (for online) and activities. I would love to sit in on a few classes, no assignments, and soak in her psychology knowledge.
She is overall a very good professor and is very passionate about what she is talking about. However, is rambles a lot and goes overtime in class. In addition, she is very strict with assignment deadlines. Turn in everything on time and participate and you will do well in this class.
The online version of the class consisted of one weekly Perusall, quiz, and assignment. None of the 3 things are difficult and quizzes are open note. Perusall is time consuming but it is an interesting way to engage with the textbook and it helped information stick. Material is interesting and relevant! She is very sweet, understanding, and smart.
Pretty solid professor, she's understanding of the situation right now and allows room for feedback. Assignments are 2-3 a week but they aren't super time consuming. Reading is important for her assignments and there are no exams (in the online course). Overall, easy enough class.
I took her for her two classes Edu Spy 3339 and Social Spy 3331 she is a very nice professor who cares about her students you need to read a chapter every week, test every week, and a classroom assignment every week is the same for both classes. Everything is easy is just the classroom assignments where you may do poorly if you don't pay attention

Huxtable is passionate and knowledgeable, but class often felt disorganized. Instead of lectures with slides, Huxtable shared information while leading a class discussion, which often went off topic (or repeated). I wanted to like this class, but it became the first one I skipped on a regular basis. Grades were clear and 2 of each was dropped.
She is a sweet and kind person. She was always ready to help and cared for her students. But she really is not that good a professor. The class felt so disorganized. Her lectures were barely related to the book and her exams were way too complicated. I know this is an upper-level class but she made it way too hard. Couldn't learn anything well.
She's a good professor, but this class was unorganized. Instead of using class time to impart her knowledge, we had what felt like student-led discussions which were not helpful & actually confused us more. The tests are ridiculously hard. The chapters in the book give way too much information. The testing process was confusing. Never again.
Extremely disorganized class. The tests are very tough and locating assignments and resources in Elearning is not easy because of how disorganized the course is.Due dates are not clear on the syllabus. There is no exact way to study for the test, she overloads you with extra resources which arent tested and expects you to keep up. Do not recommend.
Honestly, she's a sweet professor, helpful, and cares about this subject. But this will only get you so far grade wise. Test questions can be confusing because it is not the term that is asked rather a situation and how a person would respond (sentence structure). Overall, I wouldn't take this class again if I had known about the tests.
I believe Dr. Huxtable really does mean well, however, I don't see how this class can be so disorganized. I really don't mind putting a lot of work into a class, but I feel as though most of what we learn in this course is redundant. You have to memorize the textbook in hopes of getting an A, and there's no guideline for what we need to learn.
It is no doubt that Dr. Huxtable cares about her students, however, the course is extremely unorganized. Tests are scenario based and very tricky, even with the three tries that she gives. You have to memorize the textbook to get a good grade. Perusall is another very time consuming thing that is a waste of time. In class assignments so don't skip.
I feel the amount of flak Dr. Huxtable catches here is unfair. While her exams are textbook heavy, she gives 3 attempts at each exam (in-class exams are typically easier). Also, if you can't make her official office hours, she is typically more than happy to schedule additional online or in-person office hours that work for you.
The professor was very kind and caring with each student and the lectures given. The material is quite difficult in that it is mostly new concepts that differ from other types of courses such as abnormal, sexual, or criminal. Assignments were simple and the grading was very fair.
Course was unnecessarily difficult. Exams are CLOSED BOOK. You must annotate 30 pages of textbook weekly. No study guide, so you must memorize entire textbook to have a chance to do well on exams. Class assignments and lectures do not help with exams but consist of filling out questionnaires. Getting an A in a course has never been this stressful.
This course requires WEEKLY Perusall assignments that are extremely time consuming. On top of that, you are required to complete in-class assignments every week which do not help with preparing for exams. You have to memorize the textbook to do well in this class. This was the most unnecessarily time consuming course I have taken this semester.
Very kind and helpful. No test review but 3 attempts on each test. Read, take notes (terms, experiments, facts), do review questions, and watch lecture videos (hybrid class). Do that and study those notes to get an A. Helpful things said in class. Interesting content. Just a reading assignment each week so I was able to balance with other classes.
Do not stress. Elearning is unorganized, but as long as you keep up and make a schedule for everything, it will be a breeze. You do need to attend class for participation grades, but it's super easy. Gives lots of material to prepare and practice for exams. You will mostly be teaching yourself with her guidance, but not difficult if you keep up.
She is a super caring professor! The exams were much more difficult than I assumed they would be. She is gracious enough to let all her students have 3 chances to retake an exam. This class isn't just about knowing the definitions of things but applying them. Attendance isn't mandatory but you should definitely go to do the in-class assignment.
Her class is very unorganized. She bombards you with so much material in elearning. Exams are extremely wordy, she gives three chances to take them for flexibility, but it's completely useless because to do well she suggests that you take it all three times and review them with her and who has the time to do that. Makes the class hard for no reason
Professor offers 4 exams with 3 attempts each. Although the weekly reading assignments can be time-consuming, you learn a lot from the course. Participation assignments are graded, but she offers 3 late tokens in the event that you miss class.
The exams are really long and harder than I thought. I attempted each exam three times but got the same grade each time as I did on the first try. Plus, because of all the retakes, there are only two weeks in the entire semester when there's no exam. So, you'll be super busy, especially with the homework for this class.
You'll have to take the makeup or practice exams at the testing center when you're available. The in-class exam happens on a regular class day. I really suggest doing the practice exam since these tests are tough and you'll definitely need to study. Also, each week you'll have to annotate a chapter from the textbook, which takes up a lot of time.
Very sweet teacher but not so good class. You are given three chances to take each exam, however the exams are painfully difficult. They are wordy, confusing, and bad test takers would be crying. She has mandatory assignments you need to do, so you need to come to class. Each week you need to annotate a chapter that is very long, took me 2 hours.
The class was okay overall for multiple reasons. The class was composed of weekly graded annotations in the textbook and her lectures in class were a discussion over that chapter you would previously annotate. The problem was that her lectures were pretty much useless. She is a great person who will help you succeed, but I would not recommend her.
The class is tough but the professor is helpful. Weekly textbook annotations are time-consuming. Exams focus on applying concepts, so studying the textbook is crucial. Unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for practice questions.
The worst professor at UTD. You learn nothing in class. She is very liberal and has many biases about many things, which is very misleading information! I was very excited about social psychology, but I ended up learning nothing!
taking social psych and edu psych with her together. would say textbook annotations and all take forever. do expect to self-study most content. personally don't think either class is particularly difficult, requires memorization, did learn a lot. sweet person and cares about students. personally would recommend. neither is an easy class.
Lectures are useless. Exams are wordy and hard for literally no reason. There are weekly Perusall annotation assignments from readings, but she's lenient with them and gives you 3 make-up options. You pretty much have to teach yourself all of the content and absorb the entire textbook to do well on exams because her lectures are not helpful.
The workload is manageable, consisting mainly of reading and annotating notes on Perusall. Two connection assignments. The in-class activities are easy to earn 5 points for each. Exams are difficult but you have 3 chances of each. I didn't have time to use the supplemental material that much, the textbook is the main resource for pass the exam.
Fun and kind professor. Weekly reading and annotating assignments. Class met once a week (hybrid) and lectures were light and clarifying. Opportunities to make up for missed points. 4 exams, provides a key concepts list but it's not exhaustive. If you read and watch lecture videos you should be good. Really interesting class.
I took social psychology with her and educational psychology. For social psychology the work load was fine and reasonable. As for educational psych it was way too much work for an elective. I read atleast 40 pages each week and the exam questions were wayyyyy too complicated. Yes you had 3 chances to take the exams but you needed them.
Considering its hybrid, the amount of online work was reasonable with longgg perusall annotations of the chap due once a week. exams exceptionally difficult. luckily there was 3 attempts with 2 in the testing center and 1 in person. took as a freshman but i would def wait for more college experience. she wants u to succeed and is very approachable.
Stay away.
I never write reviews here, but I really want to save you guys if you are planning to take social psych with her... she makes everything political, EVERYTHING, even her exams she uses politics as examples which is very very uncomfortable, she does not care about her students whatsoever, she does not know how to make exams and how to talk to people.
She's open to questions but you don't even know what to ask. This class is an elective but way too difficult for such. The exams are extremely difficult. She wants you to know examples of definitions as if you have already mastered the class and if you miss a few questions you fail the test. You get makeup tests but only on certain days.never again
This is my second time taking Dr. Huxtable's class. She is an amazing educator! She always set clear instructions in her syllabus! She is also a thought-provoking professor, encouraging students to discuss various opinions and ideas on the topic. I gained a great deal of perspective through her teaching! The workload is much lighter than 3339.
Took this class and kind of was a big mistake, professor does not know how to formulate a good exam, all her exams are so wordy and purposely tries to throw you off. Makes attendance mandatory but lectures are such a waste of time that she does not even go over the important things for the exam. If I were you, I would choose another professor.
