She is a great prof! She cares about how well you do and will do anything to help you! Great class!
good teacher
Wicked teacher, her teaching style kept me interested in the class.
great teacher, extremely helpful, interested in what shes teaching. A++++
No complaints here. Do the readings and follow the assignment guidelines and there will be no surprises.
Good prof. Definately not one you want to avoid. Clear explanations, good personality, speaks impecable english(easy to understand) and prepares you well for tests(to do really well you must do the rerading). Overall EXCELLENT choice
I didn't quite see what was so great about her. I really hated her tests; I found them to be quite challenging (and I have a 3.75 GPA). You really need to know the textbook thoroughly, and attend class. lol, she'll also (pretend to) agree with anything you say, no matter how stupid it is.
The friendliest professor I've ever had. Super nice and tests are pretty easy if you do the reading. Assignments are easy too.

The nicest prof I have ever had! Very understanding and helpful. Made a boring subject a lot more interesting! She also simpilfied difficult topics very well.
She taught the lab. and i say that loosly, i learned how to run the spss program from my prof and taught the people around me how to use it as well. shes nice but could not answer almost any question that was asked by anyone in my lab.
Karen made the labs very informative. Getting a good grade every week in the Labs was not difficult. Her lab assistant Jillian McLean filled in for her every week and supervised and instructed us and was a very knowledgable. She made learning the information easy. GREAT looking too!
She's the greatest prof EVER!! I went to her for help before my exams and gave men the best advice ever. Totally approachable...very enthusiastic...makes class fun...understands that if you can't make it justg let her know, she's so cool
so nice
she's unreal but gone for the year because she's having a baby
Dr. Kampen is a really nice professor. She offers help to anyone who needs it. Lectures were interesting, which made the tests bearable. However, quizzes were based on boring textbook material which made it a bit difficult. Overall, I would recommend Dr. Kampen.
Took her class because it was supposed to be an easy sociology class, turned out horrible. Boring lectures, very sex ist teacher, difficult/dumb testing. She likes to concentrate on small unimportant bits in the text. Since when is a quiz 50 multiple choice questions? Im a B+ student, talked with many other men in the class who all got brutal mark
Terrible. Tests were ridiculously hard and focused on unimportant specifics rather than main concepts. Tests used awkward wording. Her teaching didn't make sense and it was completely illogical. Do not take this course. She is a nice enough person but her teaching methods are just illogical. Her handouts are all typed it comic sans-I mean come on!
Horrible instructor. Her quizzes are very easy and her tests are brutal. They make no sense and ask the most ridiculous questions that are too easy to even know. The wording is awkward and her marking scheme is out of whack. She's awful. Worst prof I have ever had. Rambles and sucks at lecturing. Do not take with her.
Great prof. Makes research methods bearable. Always smiling and friendly. Tests are ok so long as you do the practice questions
I'm a mature student who just took her class. Her weekly quizzes were easy, as long as you read the chapter before class. She can ramble, but her lectures are generally interesting. As long as you attend class and pay attention, and re-read the class slides/notes, you'll do fine.
She's really unclear when she's explaining things - she takes very simple topics and complicates them. Very approachable outside of class (and you're going to need to, to unscramble her notes).
My favourite professor at the U of M. She is a sweetheart and I enjoy going to her class. The tests were easy if you read the textbook and showed up to class. Lots of practice questions as well. The end of the year assignment is an amazing assignment.
She wasn't a terrible prof at all, but I disliked how much of the exams were based on the textbook material. Especially some extraneous details that really don't have much to do with anything. She tends to ramble on about nothing, and was not alway the most aware of the time. She either showed up late to lectures, just on time or ended class late.
Did not preform the daily basic things a prof needs to successfully teach. Was often late, unorganized and off topic. Tests were way to hard and questions on tests were unrelated. I did not feel I was given a fair chance in this course due to her teaching methods and unreliability. Often tests had questions no one got correct.
If you're looking for the easiest 6 credit hour class ever, look no further. Kampen is a good prof, however, the material (in my opinion) wasn't very interesting, so at times made paying attention a bit difficult. Genuinely cares about students and how they're faring through the duration of the course - known to postpone tests for more study time
As a first year university student last year, she made me feel so excited for everything. I thought she was absolutely amazing. Very kind and such a sweetheart. Often moved test dates and deadlines to make it work for everyone. Was very considerate. Very enthusiastic, I loved coming to class. Recommended her to all my friends taking SOC classes!
Biggest pet peeve is that she skips the slide before you finish writing. Blabs on off topic for most of the class, making it easy to pay less attention. Shes is really nice but cant look past the skipping of the slides with no time to write.
I took SOC2290 with her in the spring and loved her. She was always willing to answer questions and she answers emails quickly. Her tests are a mix of multiple choice and long answer. She is an easy marker, I barely studied for the tests and ended up with an A. Would recommend going to class because she tests on things she mentions only in class.
I really liked Karen, both as a professor, and as a person! She made sociology an interesting, enjoyable course. My one complaint is that on tests, very obscure questions from the textbook are asked, and often they were extremely irrelevant to the subject being discussed. Aside from that, she's very approachable and accessible outside of class.
Super nice person and hilarious in class. Likes to show videos related to the topic to better our understanding. Explains concepts well, and clearly states what's to be expected on tests and in the rest of the course.
Karen is a solid professor for sociology. She is a bit unorganized at times but the class is pretty straight forward. Attending lectures and reading and taking notes from the textbook is a must if you want to do well in this course. She also provides practice questions and she is friendly and genuinely cares about her students.
Tbh the whole TopHat as well as Revel quizzes resulting in 45% of the grade is NOT needed. Tests only made up 65% of the class whereas the rest was relied upon in class usage of an APP (I mean, seriously?????) and weekly online quizzes which again was not on UMLearn, but a separate site. Expensive, time consuming. Don't do it people.
She's so nice and her lectures are fairly straight forward. She has two day exams; 1 day for textbook stuff and 1 day for only lecture material, so go to the lectures. Her participation mark is on tophat so if you miss a class doing tophat, you lose marks. There's online quizzes for textbook material if you miss you loose marks
Karen is a lovely person and a great professor! She is very understanding and obviously loves what she teaches and appreciates classroom participation. Her lectures are on relevant and interesting topics, and she makes sure to invite guest speakers, watch documentaries, and encourage classroom discussion. Take this course with her if you can!
Great professor and super nice person. Her tests are over two days: 1 part on textbook material, and 1 part on lecture material, and they're not that hard. Don't miss class since answering Tophat questions count for marks. She's very passionate about the subject and brings in guest speakers and shows us cool documentaries.
Some say she goes through slides too quick but she has a lot to cover and she uploads the slides to umlearn on Sundays or at least the day before class. Print or download them and add any whiteboard or verbal notes as you go along (class exclusive notes, don't skip!). She encourages class discussion. Guest speakers, videos, and fun activities.
Karen was one of the kindest profs I've had. She is very considerate and will take the time to explain or clarify. She cares about her students and is genuinely passionate about sociology. Her tests do have a lecture exclusive component, so attendance is important. Textbook readings important too. Great 6 credit hour class.
An amazing and hilarious prof! Shes so enthusiastic about what she teaches and is a very kind and caring woman. I wouldve found the material very boring if I didnt have her as my prof. I highly recommend taking one of her courses.
She's an okay prof. You have to really make sure you go to class AND read the book in its entirety because her lectures don't go over much of it & if you didn't read something the tests can be really difficult. She uses recent examples & seems to genuinely care about everyone which sets her apart from most profs I've had. Very sympathetic too!
I loved Karen so much in soc1200 I decided to take mother class with her, social stats. I suck at math and she was super amazing at making sure everyone knows what theyre doing. Very friendly and easy to approach. She really does want all of her students to do the best. Seriously take a class with her if you can, you wont regret it
Karen Kampen is by far the best prof I have ever had. Highly recommend taking one of her classes because she is so nice and explains lectures very clearly. Going to class and reading the textbook is a must if you want a good mark. Tests are very lengthy but if you know what you have read and took detailed notes, you should do fine!
The best prof i've had so far. she makes a potentially boring course interesting by using real-world examples and interesting stories during class. tests are easy, but you do need to read the textbook. she's super accessible out of class and clearly loves her students and wants to help them as much as she can. the best prof teaching soc 1200.
Great prof! Tests are 50% textbook and 50% lecture material, so make sure you read the textbook AND attend class. Every test was pretty straight forward, if you put in effort you can get a good grade.
Funny, made lectures interesting by use of videos and tophat questions, gave us short breaks - really solid prof. If I had to take any more arts courses I'd look for another one of her's. I recommend her. Make sure you buy the textbook and go to the lectures, because the test is 50% textbook + 50% lecture notes, and tophat questions are for marks.
Best prof at U of M! 6 tests 50% lecture and 50% textbook so you have to do the readings and attend class but she makes it super fun and interesting. Gives breaks throughout class and lets students be involved during her lectures. She has so much energy and passion in the subject that it makes class engaging and fun. 10/10
Karen was one of my favourite Professors! She is super caring, chill, really enjoys what she is teaching and wants her students to do well in her class. Tests are 50% in class and 50% textbook so make sure you have a textbook. She also drops one of the test. Make sure you participate in Tophat because its for marks! No finals or midterms.
Karen is the best professor I've ever had! This intro class made me decide to minor in sociology. Her lectures are incredible, you can really tell that she puts a lot of time and thought into her class in order for us to learn in the best way possible. She would even give 5 min breaks in the middle of her lectures!! Would recommend to anyone
She post everything at after 11 pm. Lecture notes not complete and lecture tests are difficult to answer. I don't know y she doesn't want to give us the full lecture notes. Exam everyone do well on text questions LECTURE QUESTIONS are the Worst. Good luck with her
HARD TO GET A+ because of her own NOTES
This class had 6 tests (lowest one will get dropped) and a written assignment worth 20%. She is passionate about the topic but posts the lectures to UMLearn very last minute. Must go to class if you want to do well on the lecture portion of the test and read all bits of the text book too.
if u need her class note you can find it from ONECLASS website. for the test questions you can find it from QUIZLET then you don't have to come to class unless if u need the 5% of the pop quizzes . With out those 2 things is TOO hard for A/A+.
Karen is an AMAZING prof. She truly cares for her students. Gives 5 minute breaks and has interesting lectures. If you read and study the textbook you should do just fine. She drops the worst test grade at the end. If you read the textbook, show up to class and take good notes, this course should be just fine. Would take this course with her again!
She's very kind and gives interesting lectures. Her tests are 50/50 lecture and textbook material, so you need to read every single page of the text (around 800 pages) and she asks questions from specific concepts in the text that weren't covered in class. Her tests are easy enough as long as you read the text book and show up to every single class
Amazing prof and super nice, not really that hard of a class if you have her as a prof. Most of the work is just listening to lectures and reading the textbook. Once again, she is an amazing prof and hella chill, makes the class super easy.
She was always so nice and one of the only professors I had that seemed like she truly cared about her students. Online learning was not easy and she put in so much work to make sure we succeeded. Im not a big reader but because of her, the class was very fun! An asynchronous class but shes accessible for questions and concerns!
wasn't able to do all chapters because she was "too busy" one zoom per month and didn't even know what she was doing. didn't even know how to use clicker.
Karen is a great lady, not a great prof. I find her lectures to be very boring. They're all pre-recorded. There is 1 test every month. Overall boring class.
Very unorganized with how she teaches. Is kind of all over the place. Posts lectures at 2 am and spent most of the lecture talking about material that isnt even in our textbook then says she ran out of time. You have to read the entire textbook to do at all good in this course. She doesnt teach there is no zoom calls or even talking to her.
I love this prof! I took the first half of the course with her this term and I loved her. She is absolutely hilarious and is always open to questions being asked towards the course/test material. The layout of the course was nice and very manageable. I recommend Dr. Kampen for any Sociology course because she is honestly one of the best professors!
She is a very kind professor and always tries to lighten the mood and not make things stressful. Her tests are okay, I find that she grades harder on the written section of the tests. She also doesnt give hints as to what to mainly focus on but she does give a practice quiz a few days before the test
amazing prof!
Kind and caring prof, the class is brand new but I can tell Karen is a good professor who truly wants her students to do well!
- overall she is a very caring prof - BUY THE TEXTBOOK and read every page of it - her prerecorded lectures are a pain to watch she rambles a lot and goes on tangents - her tests are easy if you read the textbook and listen to lectures and take notes - 6 tests worth 15% and 1 assignment worth 5% and a 15% final with questions given before
This course was new and for a new course it was outlined really well. The course content was very interesting, as we watched a series of the life course over the term. This professor is one of my favourites in this department and she is very caring and passionate about her work. Only downside is we didn't have our marks before the VW date.
Karen is very kind and caring. She answered emails fast and tries to get to know the students. New class so there were a few issues with getting our grades back however, they were graded fairly. She even brought in a man from the documentary we watched to answer questions on zoom, so cool! Would definitely recommend the prof and the course!
Karen is such a sweetheart! She answered emails and questions pretty fast. Her lectures were interesting and engaging. The course content was pretty fun! Would 100% recommend her for any class if you have the option!
Very caring and accessible prof. Test are 50% textbook, 25% lecture/extra videos and 25% Mind tap questions. 6 tests, she drops the worst mark and one final. Taken in Fall of 2020 so she made the class asynchronous, we only met over zoom the weeks of the test to review test concepts.
She is a great prof that really cares about her students. the tests were from the textbook, the lectures, and the MindTap questions. Her lectures are long and can be boring because sometimes she rambles on about a random topic, but she does explain things well. She is so willing to help you outside of class. Good prof
Prof. Kampen is great! She uses relevant topics to explain concepts in Sociology that would otherwise be difficult. Her lectures are a lot of fun, though she does tend to go off topic sometimes. It is obvious she cares about her students, and replies to e-mails as soon as she can. My favourite online class so far!
Professor Kampen had some of the best course material. you can tell she is very passionate about what she does, which made learning even better. she used tons of examples, though would often ramble on. nevertheless, she made sure to apply plenty of examples to theories, making it easier to understand. she was also very fun in general!
Prof. Kampen is such a gem. She really cares about her students and that certainly shows in how responsive she is to emails and how supportive she is in her feedback. Her recorded lectures were awesome, so if taking this course online, you'll be fine.
Karen was great. LOTS of reading to do since you have the textbook AND the video lectures, and both are testable. That being said, the assignments and tests are easy if you do all of the reading, and you can tell she is very passionate about what she teaches, and gives fun and interesting examples with all of the topics covered.
The best prof i've had
Professor Kampen has engaging lectures that I would recommend attending. Concepts not on the lecture slides but explained in class are testable, along with the textbook. If you attend class, and consistently keep up with your readings, this class will not be too difficult.
Really engaging prof who clearly loves the material she teaches. Tests can be a bit difficult if you're not prepared, there's a lot of minor facts from the textbook that you might not remember that are testable but as long as you understand the general concepts of the course you will do great. Would definitely recommend her to anyone
Overall she is not a great professor for SOC-1000. This course is meant to be a 6 credit hour course, but it's 3 credit hours with an expectation that students should be responsible for textbook content that is not covered in lecture. She is not reasonable that students have other courses. Also, she's very unhelpful and confusing!
Seems frazzled and unprepared to teach. She teaches as if she is speaking with her colleagues who have written the textbook, not new learners. Most lectures are reading just from the textbook. Talks and moves on very fast. Pulls heavily from the textbook for tests.
She's super chill, she really likes talking to students, that being said she is a yapper. Almost everything on the tests is straight from her lectures and random tangents she had in class. The final was VERY textbook heavy, though, so don't be mislead. She was very easy to talk to, and accessible outside of lecture hours. Lowkey loved her class.
BE AWARE! Most of these 5 star reviews are based on Karen's personality. But students need to be aware that the performance of a professor is much more important that their personality. Her performance of teaching SOC-1000 is TERRIBLE. Please do not take any classes with her!
I really loved taking this course with Karen, she was a super nice person and kept lectures engaging. There are only 3 50 question multiple choice tests worth 25% each (your highest score is worth 35%) and you get a cheat sheet for all of them. There was also a short article review worth 15%. Overall it was a super easy course.
She is very passionate about what she teaches, but her material can often be disorganized and sometimes rushes chapters. 85% of your grade comes from tests made up of 60 multiple choices, ~70% from lectures and ~30% from the textbook. Try to attend all lectures and read the textbook, and you'll do fine since a double-sided cheat sheet is allowed.
Read the textbook, attend lectures, do the mind tap questions and you will do well.
Prof Kampen has been my favourite prof of all time so far. She is incredibly caring and understanding. There was a lot of material but she managed to make all of it interesting and engaging. I would highly recommend taking any of her classes. Get ready for a great semester with Karen.
Very nice and outgoing lady who is passionate about her field. She explains the theories and course materials clearly and in a fun way. Course is mostly based on the textbook. Three exams which were all multiple-choice, and one assignment which was short and easy.
Great prof. If you want to do exceptionally well then show up to all classes as there are some very specific questions that aren't on the slides or textbook. The tests are largely mixed from textbook and lecture content. She provided practice tests that are similar to the types of questions you will see on your exams.
She is a very nice person but the textbook takes 10 hours to read one chapter and it's frustrating because the content seems like common sense but the test questions are quite specific. READ YOUR TEXTBOOK
ABSOLUTE GEM. She's extremely accessible outside of class, she even replied to an email I sent during Christmas break which I felt bad for. SHE IS SO NICE!!! Her knowledge overall is just superb. If you have the opportunity to take the class with her, DO ITTTTTT!
