Has a quiz every Tuesday, but if you do the readings, they are very easy to answer. Gives extra credit. The only bad thing is that when she reads she reads very low, you can barely hear her. She is constantly late, because of her medical condition.
She gives extremely to much work... reading list about 6 different ancient greek anthology.Gives Quzies Ever Week on the reading. Final exam is cumulative about 4 pages 3 essays.
Was always late for class, and constantly bombarded students with stories about her personal problems. We were supposed to be sympathetic towards her, but she rarely tried to accomodate students who had difficulty understanding her course.
She's a sweetheart! She's very polite to all students and always tries to help you out if you ask for it. Do the assigned readings, because she always gives a quiz on the material.

Had her for 2 semesters...she is incredibly helpful and picks some really good books. She has a quiz once a week, and an extra credit at the end of the semester. Final wasn't too hard, just pay attention in class to the things she randomly says, they'll help out in the end.
She is the best Lit prof. All the books were amazing n u can tell she really likes them 2. Teachers like that are the best they make u wanna read. Some people say there is too much reading but i mean common we are in college if u cant read 100 pgs in a week go back the third grade.
really cool lady. the books are all good except beloved, hated it. classes on tuesdays and thursdays, juss be aware thursdays class is just re-reading what you already read and discussing it for 75 minutes, absolute boredom if u dont like the book, like beloved. Ive taken kap b4 and would again
wonderful
Difficult class... we read on an average 100 pages worth of work, quizes are hard but ask fairly general things... i would suggest getting cliff notes (even though you are not supposed to) to re-enforce the readings... it makes the book much clearer
Hard Class. Lots of reading!!! BORING LIT TOO!!! Quiz every week with confusing questions, and a 5 page paper at the end and a 5 essay in class final! Crazy wierd prof! Aviod her if you can. She is a sweetheart, but her class is just too hard and boring!
She is a nice person but her class is difficult esp. with the readings. She asks distinctive questions as you will have to know every single detail. Her quizes kills your grades and gets too emotional with her books. She is often late for her classes and gives quizzes every class. She also has favorites in the class so she is not fair to new ones.
SHES GOOD, THOSE PEOPLE WHO SAID HER CLASS IS HARD DONT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT. ITS EASY, ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS READ. SHE GIVES QUIZZES EVERY WEEK ON THE READING. A PAPER FOR A MIDTERM AND A FINAL WHICH IS COMPARING AND CONTRASTING THE CHARACTERS FROM THE BOOKS SHE ASSIGNED. SHES EASY.COLLEGE IS ABOUT DOING YOUR WORK.
suggest to take a different prof. you will learn in the class however, there are quizes everyday and the readings are about a hundred pages. no midterm just paper and final but the quizes are the majority of your grade so you can't mess up and you will get a 0 if you miss a class. not easy. no spark notes
This class was great. I loved the books we read, and the quizzes (which are taken after every assigned reading) were easy as long as you read. If you can't read then you shouldn't be in college. She's very passionate about her job, and the reason shes late is because she has back problems bc she was hit by a bus a long time ago-give her a break.
Very Nice Professor if u like to read interesting novels take her..her novel selections were pretty good..JUST MAKE SURE U READ she gives a quiz almost every week so0o bee readdyy i slacked n didnt read as much as i shouldve but if u read its so0o easy n interesting i promise u! well that goes for lit 233 i dunno bout the rest shes cool overall
Prof. Kaplowitz is one of the greatest LIT professors I've ever had the pleasure of taking. She is extremely clear, she explains everything and she answers all of your questions. There are quizzes every week but they shouldn't be a problem if you read the book.
Quizzes are very important so you must read the text. She one on John Jay's most helpful prof. I learned a lot and enjoyed every text we read sometimes readings are lengthy but its college what do you expect at least she gives an intro to every text so your not totally lost
Quizzes are essential, must do the readings, they are not boring, very interesting. No midterm, just a final and one paper. Gives extra credit and is very helpful. Read what you have to read and you should be golden.
THIS IS 1 OF THE WORSE PROFESSORS I'VE EVER HAD SINCE IVE BEEN AT JOHN JAY. SHE'S MEAN AND DID NOT TREAT ME WITH RESPECT. IN MY OPINION SHE PLAYS FAVORTISM. HOW COULD FAIL THE DAMN CLASS WITH PASSING THE FINAL AND PAPER AND AT LEAST PASSING SOME OF HER WORTHLESS QUIZZES. IF YOU HATE READING..I ADVISE YOU TO NOT TAKE HER.
Shes Nice, Kind of Chatty & Attempted To Make The Class Fun; Attendance Is a MUST as Well as Passing The Majority of The Quizzes(1-2 a Wk.); The Freqency of The Quizzes or How Much We Had To Read For Them Couldve Been Reduced But Other Than That Its Not a Hard Class; If You Cant Keep Up w/The Readings(About 5-6 Books) This Is NOT The Class For You!
She changed my life.
She is a very sweet professor and knows her stuff. however, there is tremendous amount of work and hard to Ace.there is a quiz every week, which end up to be 17 quizzes for the whole semester. A 5 pages final paper, lots of term definition and 5 essays on the final. an extra credit assignment but it doesn't seem to improve your grade too much
If you want to hurt your GPA then you can take her she is horrible a quiz in every class and the final paper is 7 to 10 pages
Prof. Kaplowitz is an amazing professor, she makes you read a lot though. If you don't like to read don't bother taking her class. Quizzes are done either before every class or every other class. I hated reading, God knows I still do but she makes you read interesting novels that will have you wanting to know what's next. Do the work, guaranteed A.
GIVES QUIZZES EVERY CLASS AND PAY ATTENTION TO ALL THE SMALL DETAILS IN THE BOOKS.
There is 5 books to read in this class, and every single class period you have a quiz. the quizes are 65% of your grade so if you are not willing to do the readings DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS THEN. she is nice and respected but can be rude when people are rude. we only have one paper to do in that class and for the final you had to come finals week.
professor Karen will give you quizzes every class but the twist is although you can be reading the book and may or may not be interested in the book, she will quiz you on parts of a book that is not important and will catch you off guard as well as her chapters are heavy in the reading. beware if you are taking hard classes DO NOT TAKE HER.
Shes great. Even if your not a person who reads a lot, the novels assigned are interesting & sheds a light on REAL issues while being entertaining. The class consists of a very reasonable quiz on the reading & a class discussion that is very student driven. Lots of opportunity to talk & get involved in this class. Participation is important.
I cannot express how wonderful Dr. Kaplowitz is. If I could take her for every class I would. She is one of the most understanding and brilliant instructors I have had the pleasure of taking. Yes, there is a lot of reading, but if you do the reading, you will pass every quiz. It is very straightforward. The books are amazing and interesting as well
Prof. Kaplowitz is amazing. She cares about her students and enjoys what shes teaching. With her classes, what you give is what you get. If you dont put your part you will not receive a good grade. At the beginning of the semester shes upfront and states, if you dont do the readings, you will NOT pass. So just follow the syllabus n DO UR PART.
Dr. Kaplowitz is an extraordinary professor. Not only are her lectures fun and interesting from the first class to the last, her caring nature allowed me to feel comfortable to participate in class discussions. Some students criticized the material as being heavy, but most students found the novels to be super interesting, which kept me engaged.
Professor Kaplowitz is an amazing professor who loves to teach. You'll have to read a lot for this class but the readings that are assigned are very fun and intriguing. There is no midterm, just one final paper and a final, pretty easy. I highly recommend taking this class.
Professor Kaplowitz care about her students. Shell go the extra mile for her students to succeed in all their endeavors. Shes patient and she make time for her students. Whenever I ask her for a letter of recommendations, shes always willing to assist me. I took Lit 326 with her in the Fall 2018 semester and she was very awesome.
As English as a second language, this class helped me with more with comprehension and pay more attention to what I'm reading, I would definitely take this class again if I had the chance. Great professor.
PREPARE TO READ YOUR LIFE AWAY!! We read 4 novels this semester which is wild. this class took a lotttt of my time away from doing well in other classes. If youre not a reader dont take this. Chapter reviews and quiz on those chapters everyyyyclass. We did 60quiz 60% of grade . Essay final has3 parts. Final paper based on pics MET museumvisit
Of cousre shes super nice BUTTT the amount or reading to be done was crazy (lvl 300 or not) def GPA dropper for me. I think some prof forget that students take multiple classes, life/kids/jobs/house. And test everyyyy class?!?! example : 180pgs assigned today must be read for tomorrows quiz. BRACE YOURSELF!!!!!!! bc it was haard to manage
If you enjoy reading, you must take any class Professor Kaplowitz teaches. Every book she assigns is amazing, and yes she requires daily quizzes but if you do the readings they are extremely easy. If their is ever any confusion she is always there to help and always answers emails and encourages questions. overall an amazing professor!
I will first say, once you pick up one of Prof. K's assigned books, you will not want to put them down. The best part of this class were the discussions, and believe me: you will be anxious to participate. The Prof. is very approachable and accommodating. If you manage your time wisely and do the reading, you will do well in her class.
Kaplowitz is a great professor, and if you are an avid reader like myself than you will definitely enjoy this class. She is very easy to talk to in and outside of the class. She is also very great at responding to emails fast! If you want to be introduced to great authors and great stories, then take this class, you won't regret it!
Professor Kaplowitz is a phenomenal professor who actually cares about her students. Ive taken her class twice and regret not being able to take her class again. The readings were enjoyable and the books she assigns were a absolute delight to read. Each class youre assigned a reading and are required to answer 10 questions about the reading.
As long as you do the readings youll pass the quizzes. Which are 10 questions each class. Its that easy. The readings are so interesting youll breeze right through them. After the quiz the class is spent discussing the reading and dissecting the book. Everyone is eager to participate. Really fun and laid back class. Professor has a heart of gold
Short quizzes. No midterm. Final based on literary terms. Professor Is passionate about literature and it shows in her work. She motivates you through her love of reading. It was fun debating world views through literature. Readings almost always reflected on what was going on in the world around us. Do the readings and engage in class. Easy A!
LIT 327 - Crime, Punishment, and Justice in World Literatures I took this course during the Spring of 2019. My first Lit class since in a decade. Mrs. K is an amazing professor and very approachable. The books she chooses for the class are interesting and thought-provoking. Participate, read, and you will pass. Would definitely take this again
Let me be clear shes amazing. I was going to drop out but shes very helpful. You have to read to pass the quizzes. The quizzes are easy based on readings. 1 paper and a final which is easy as well.
This course requires a lot of reading we read 4 novels and there are quizzes in every class. But if you read you wont have problem they are easy. 1 paper, art from metro museum, final includes 10 literary words, 2 essay and 1 essay is about the paper which is easy. Get ready to read and final is very easy you dont have to study that much for it.
If anybody is taking this class cause they need a level 300 class, I would recommend a picking a different class. The amount of reading this professor requires you to do can be a bit too much. Not to mention that she gives a quiz every week. She is nice and will try to help you as much as possible, but don't take this class if you don't to read
I took Prof. Kaplowitz in the Fall 2019 and I must say her class is the ideal course to fulfill your 300-level gen-ed requirement. The four books read throughout the semester were interesting and made the class discussion worthwhile. Despite the quizzes and long readings, Prof. Kaplowitz cares for her students' success and is helpful. Take her.
One of the most caring professors out there! The books she picks out are honestly great mind you I don't like reading but I enjoyed them. There are quizzes every class but they consists of only 10 questions, if you do the readings you will definitely pass. She always answers email and is super sweet. She did a great job through this pandemic.
Prof. Kaplowitz's class was amazing. You're required to read before coming to class, but the amount of reading is broken up evenly & is a very reasonable amount to read. She offers great feedback whenever you have a comment/question. There are quizzes every week; however, they are easy and straightforward questions every time. Easy to pass!
She is very sweet. Passionate about reading and her students ! classes are easy as long as you read the material. No tests, no final exam. Just a brief essay on the readings.
Professor Kaplowitz is truly amazing, plus she goes the extra mile with you. If you have an issue with another professor she will be your voice if you ask. She is reachable and alsways return your emails. Yes she gives quiz everyday but once you read (the same way you have to read everyday for other classes) you will pass. Take her you will her
Prof. Kaplowitz is an amazing professor. There are quizzes every class but if you do the readings like you are supposed to, there should be no issue. She is extremely charismatic and cares deeply about her students. The readings are not long or difficult at all. There was no final exam, just 3 final essays, which were straightforward.
Professor Kaplowitz is one of the best literature professors at John Jay. She is extremely caring and responsive to her students. Yes, you will have to read 4 books and have quizzes every day. It is a college class after all, but it's easy if you put in the effort. The books are interesting and the discussions are very enjoyable. Take her!
Prof. Kaplowitz has been the most wonderful professor throughout this entire semester. With everything that's going on with the Covid 19 situation, this professor was able to reach out consistently to make sure we kept up with our homework assignments and readings. She is straightforward about quizzes and she makes this course worth taking! uwu
Prof. Kaplowitz is an amazing professor. The whole course is straight to the point, we read 4 novels & the quizzes were easy as long as you read for that day or week. Prof also drops the 3 lowest grades & honestly was very outgoing and understanding. The final consists of 3 short essays about the novels we read. She cares about her students.
Professor Kaplowitz is by far the best Literature professor I have ever taken. She cares deeply about her students especially during this time of COVID-19. She is very charismatic and engaging. The books we had to read were very interesting and not boring at all. Yes there are quizzes after every reading, but if you read the book you will do great.
She is a nice woman with good intentions. The slightest thing annoys her since she is old fashioned. The books she has us read are all relatively good and interesting. Quiz after every single time you read. Was very attentive to her students when class was switched online.
Professor Kaplowitz is such a kind and caring soul. She is also very understanding. A semester with Prof. K consists of reading 4-5 novels and getting quizzed on the pages she assigns. There are a total of 22 quizzes, given twice a week and one final paper.
Professor Kaplowitz is honestly one of the best professors. No textbooks, just books. It is a literature class, so reading is required, you literally signed up for reading. Reading the books was not hard, they were interesting. She is also very understanding and will help you any way that she can. Just put in the work and you will get a good grade.
Professor Kaplowitz is caring professor, but the amount of reading she gives can be a bit too much and a lot to remember espically if she gives out quizzes twice a week. I took her for level 300 class requirement and didn't have an idea of what I got myself into. Don't take her class if you know that you can't stay consistent with reading.
Before taking this class i read so many negative reviews. Professor Karen is such a sweet heart, yes be prepare to read but be certain that if you read this class will be an easy A! The books the professor chooses catches the readers attention. Professor Kaplowitz is by far one of the best professor ive had so far and yes i would take her again!
This professor is nice, understanding, and an overall sweetheart. She greets everyone as they join the zoom call. However, she assigns over 100 pages to read A DAY. She overworks you. Her quizzes are based on small details from the book. Her books and lectures are very boring.
She is a true gem !! extremely caring. However be prepared to read A LOT and for daily quizzes, she rarely gives hw and if you participate you are sure to get a good grade. No midterm just a final
This professor has no regard for her students real life outside of class. She expects a lot. The booksare difficult to understand She gives quizzes everyday so you must know the readings. On top of her everyday quizzes she gives a final. Which is idiotic considering a final tests knowledge and she already does that everyday. Would not take. Rude.
This professor made attending class in a pandemic bearable and most importantly enjoyable. Her class is focused around the books she assigns so you will have to read, but always gives reasonable time to do so! Don't wait til last minute to do the reading and you will be fine. She gives students every chance to get an A, pretty easy class
syllabus is straightforward: three books for the semester, one quiz each class (if you read you'll be fine) 55% , ONE paper (she changed it and has us do 3 short essays 250-words each) 15% , one final 15%, partic. 15%. class focuses on understanding the readings and having a genuine conversation, doesnt lecture but lets everyone share, great prof.
One of the nicest and caring professors Ive ever had but be ready to read and youll be fine.
She is very sweet! Obviously take this class if you like to read books. There are 3 books assigned with quizzes every class. The quizzes are not that hard if you read. If you do not like reading books then dont take this class. Very accommodating for online class/corona. There was suppose to be a final paper but she cancelled it bc of this time.
This class was one of those classes that I genuinely enjoyed. The books she had us read throughout the semester were SO interesting. She is a very thoughtful woman and the pages she assigns to read are not hard to complete whatsoever. There are 10 qs quizzes every class, but if you actually READ the book YOU WILL BE JUST FINE! Best professor ever!
Prof Kaplowitz is extremely caring and straightforward with her students. We read three books this semester, quizzes based on each reading, 10 questions each and super easy to get through! There were 3 short creative papers (250 each) and one final. This prof made it extremely simple to take this class in the middle of a pandemic. Love her!
GREAT class! We read 3 books; if you were able to get them online she would post the lines where you had to begin and stop reading. Easy quizzes if you read the assigned pages. Respectful and caring when it came to listening her students' opinions. Reading varies, some days there are only 20 pages, others 15 or 40. Nothing harsh. It's doable.
This class was truly an amazing class. She has made class bearable during this pandemic. I see comments complaining that there is too much to read because she assigned 100 pages. Youre in college, get over it. 100 pages are assigned but not to read in one day. Youll get a weekend. How you plan that time is YOUR responsibility.
Please do not pay attention to the negative reviews, they are greatly inaccurate and done out of spite. She is one of the greatest professors you will have at John Jay. Her quizzes are very easy as long as you do the reading. She doesn't overwork us, every assignment she has given us is manageable and she has always put us first.
One of the best professors I have taken here at John Jay, I am shocked at all the negative reviews! Since this is a reading class obviously you have to read. Professor Kaplowitz assigns 3 book to read during the semester, 10 question daily quizzes (which are easy if you read) and one final. She cares about her students, take her you won't regret it
Remarkable! Prof. is brilliant, inspiring, dependable, caring + fosters a welcoming environment to express ur ideas about the novels you'll be reading. Fair grader on weekly quizzes, short essays and paper. Reading material is short read and you'll do well! Clear grading criteria, grades everything fast! have a good passage to tlk abt for lecture.
Professor Kaplowitz is a great professor for LIT326. Outside of class, she was always easily accessible and graded quizzes/papers quickly. She's a very caring and joyful person to be around. The class is reading heavy (It's a literature class), but the readings are enjoyable and easy-going. Quizzes after each reading, but they are fairly easy.
This class was amazing! She is a very generous and educated professor and I loved every reading she gave. Many of the past post aren't the best to go off of because she gave us plenty of time for her reading assignments, which were not only interesting, but also very enlightening for the course. I took this during covid and she was my favorite prof
Professor Kaplowitz does assign quizzes for each class which is based off of the books she requires. She made us read from a range of 50-150 pages per class. The quizzes are very specific to the readings so if you dont read you wont pass the quiz. She doesnt give extra. Not a hard class if you do your work.
Professor Kaplowitz was a great professor to have, especially with everything going on. The class was easy if you did the readings (30 pages during the week, 80-100 pages on the weekends) and the books were interesting. 10 question quizzes that are straight from the reading, 3 short 250 word response papers, and an easy final. Definitely recommend.
For a Literature course, this is one of the easiest courses I have taken. Three books, quizzes on the readings, and a final. Professor Kaplowitz is very understand and accessible outside of class if you need help. If you do not want to read then you will not pass. The reading choices are very interesting and she doesnt overwhelm you with readings
Shes a great professor and very caring. Its college youre supposed to read and do work stop complaining and grow up. The class was extra easy just show up and participate.
We read every night, but the bookds were great did not even feel like you had to do homework. No papers, no homework, only final, which was so easy. Quiz every class, but if you read you'll know the answers. Great professor and discussion
She is caring and sweet. We read three books in total throughout the semester. She assigns about 35-40 pages on Monday for Wednesday and then about 100 pages on Wednesday for the following Monday. There is a quiz each class based on the readings. This is college and high school anymore. I enjoyed her class and the books and I HATE reading.
Professor Kaplowitz is one of the best professors that I have met. She cares for her students. There are quizzes every class which is easy if you read the assigned pages. The readings are not hard because all the books are interesting. I definitely recommend her.
Professor Karen was one of the best professors I took for an online class during the pandemic. She assigns quizzes based on the readings and the reading amount depends on the amount of days spaced between classes. Make sure to do your readings and you're sure to get an easy A.
This was my first time taking an online class, and I'm so glad to have Professor Kaplowitz as one of my professors. She was honestly one of the best and caring professors i have ever received. Her class was very simple/easy to understand. She cares about her students and her assignments are very FAIR. TBH if you're complaining, Grow up.
She was the most caring and thoughtful professor I ever had at John Jay. She really cares about her students and makes the class interesting by assigning amazing books to read. The books were actually interesting to read!! She gives enough time to read the books so you don't have to worry about it.
Professor Kaplowitz was honestly one of the best professors Ive had. She is super accommodating and understanding when it comes to her students. I had to reschedule my final and she gave me no issues doing so. Highly recommend taking her class
Physical books not mandatory just communicate it with her. We didn't have long pages to read in one day we had a whole weekend. Quizzes are 10 questions each about basic things, no deep thinking questions only towards the end and it was only 250 words answering a question bases on your opinion. Go to class and participate. She is awesome!
Prof. Kaplowitz is very understanding and nice! Her class consists of 3 novels, they were all pretty decent. Although, if you are taking this class always make sure to schedule reading time! Her quizzes consist of details from the novels (not hard at all), but reading makes it 100 times easier.
Prof. Kaplowitz is one of the most caring professors I've taken so far. She really cares about her students and helps you understand the material. Her class is a safe place for everyone to participate. You'll have to read 3 very interesting novels for this course so plan your schedule accordingly.
I had the pleasure of being taught by Professor Kaplowitz last year during the fall semester; and her teaching skills are great. She's a very understanding, flexible, caring and organized individual. She abides by her syllabus and tries to engage her students to her best of her ability. The class isn't easy, lots of reading needs to be completed.
Professor Kaplowitz is a caring professor and will help u any way she can, but don't think that the class will be easy. She assigns about 50-100 pages, which can be a bit overwhelming and there is a quiz in the begin of class. The books that she has u read were kind of boring. If you don' t stay on top of the reading then u won't pass this course.
The worst professor at John Jay. She assign four book to read and she give you quizzes every week 10 question and you being time as well. Lot of reading for homework. Attendance is mandatory and participation.
Prof Kaplowitz is such an amazing professor. She made the material so interesting. You can really tell that she cares about every single student. You have to read all the books and will be quizzed on it, but she makes sure everyone understands the material before moving on and will work with you if you're falling behind. I highly recommend!
We had 4 books to read. She broke them down into manageable parts. Each class begun with a short quiz, some multiple choice, and others not. My big advice is to stay on top of the readings. If need be, audio books were a good alternative when short of time. She's really nice and helpful, and the quizzes are straightforward. It was easier than a 101
Her class is absolutely amazing! The literature that she selected is not only captivating but eye opening. I, personally, am not a fan of reading but Proffesor Kaplowitz made it enjoyable. Proffesor Kaplowitz is an amazing person. Shes very understanding and always tries to help her students.
If your looking for a class to get an easy A i highly recommend taking this class. The professor gives amazing lectures and the quizzes given each week are easy if you read the book. I personally never liked reading books but this class completely changed that. I now have a book I completely love all thanks to professor Karen Kaplowitz!
Professor Kaplowitz, is very caring, understanding, and has a great sense of humor. The course itself is fairly easy if you do your readings she gives a quiz at the beginning of every class which I personally liked as it made me motivated to read, if you read these quizzes are easy. The novels chosen are great! I highly recommend this course!
Professor Kaplowitz is an amazing professor. This class consisted of 4 books and some short essays but the reading was very interesting and entertaining. You're going to have to read a lot of pages sometimes for each class followed by a 10 question quiz (summary-based). But there is plenty of time to do these readings and be involved in the class.
Professor Kaplowitz was great. Sure the course had many readings but if you manage your time well this is not a problem. Prof. Kaplowitz was always supportive, kind, and caring toward her students - definitely one of my favorite professors at John Jay. I highly recommend taking her class if you expect college level work.
One of the best teachers Ive had being in John jay you buy the reading material she request and make sure you read because of the quizzes other than that do what you need to do easy A shes a good teacher a caring teacher at that and Im glad I met her because I enjoyed reading because of her
One of my favorite professors ive had. You have to read the assigned chapters however, in order to pass because she gives short one word answer quizzes at the start of every class. The readings are not that bad either and will hook you and keep you interested. Overall, if you attend, participate, and read you will receive an easy A
Professor Kaplowitz is my most favorite professor at John Jay. I love her class so much that I have taken it twice. She is the most caring professor and you will not regret taking her class. Yes you do have reading assignments, but if you manage your time wisely you will have nothing to fear. The novels are always interesting and you will have fun.
We had 4 books this Fall 2021 semester (one book a month). Reading and participation makes class fun/dramatic, some books were very graphic (physically, sexually), but professor will work with you (guides your reading 1-on-1) if you get uncomfortable for any reason (may get an A). Very inspiring and 21st century/innovative style of conversation.
Great Professor, all you have to do to get an A is do the readings every week. Books are really interesting. She is caring and considerate.
Professor Kaplowitz is an amazing professor and I would definitely recommend taking her. I am a person who is not a fan of reading but she had us read 4 books and I loved 3 out of the 4. She made it so easy for us as long as you do the reading. Quick 10 question quiz everyday about the assigned readings, no midterm, 1,000 word paper, final essay.
She's an amazing professor; may seem tough but she's very caring. One of my favorite professors at John Jay.
Prof. Kaplowitz is by far the best Professor I have ever had at John Jay College. She doesn't ask for much, just that you do the readings and participate in discussions each class. This is my 2nd time taking her and I would have taken her again if she were offering online courses next semester. Her passion for reading is unmatched, please take her.
Professor Kaplowitz is an amazing professor! She really cares about her students and all the books are extremely interesting. She doesnt give homework and only 2 papers. Would definitely take her again!
Prof Kaplowitz is a wonderful professor!! She is caring, understanding, and explains the readings in both an educational and interesting way. Her lectures were always engaging. The coursework consists of short 10 question quizzes every class, two papers, no midterm, and one final exam. Just make sure to properly do the readings and participate.
Professor Kaplowitz is one of my favorite professors at John Jay. She does a wonderful job explaining the books and truly wants her students to succeed. I would 100% take another class taught by her!
Professor Kaplowitz is an amazing Professor at John jay! She is very sweet and caring about her students. She understands very well that we have a life outside of class as well. The books I read in her class were very interesting and encouraged me to start reading again.. easy grade just small quizzes at the beginning of the class and an essay.
Amazing Professor! Taking her class again next semester.
There is a quiz every class !!!!!!!!!!! you need to read the book, you will not get through without reading besides that the class is easy !!!!
If you love reading and are good at quizzes this class is just for you, a quiz each class please read the books are very interesting and she puts difficult questions you will not be able to find online. The lectures are my favorite part because it almost feels like a book club since everyone is putting in their input. GREAT PROFESSOR!!
Professor Kaplowitz is genuinely passionate about what she teaches. The class is as expected, with daily quizzes and discussions on the assigned reading. Take this class if you enjoy reading. I loved her picks of WWII historical fiction. Again, she makes it very clear what is expected from you. Keep up with the readings and you'll be fine.
Give a quiz every day at the beginning of class based on the reading you have to do for the next class; If you do not read, you will fail the quiz;Added a 5-point deduction every time you do not participate weeks into the course because no one wanted to volunteer to read from the book; Most of the books read in class were confusing and uninteresting.
I am so happy to have taken this course. Professor Kaplowitz is an absolute inspiration. Class is super easy. You'll be assigned inexpensive books, have a simple quiz in each class about the chapter you've read, and the final exam. Attendance and participation are mandatory. This is college, we're adults, if you want good grades, do the work!
Professor Kaplowitz is a really good professor who truly cares about her students. She brings great energy to every class and is always eager to teach and read her favorite books. Her passion for the subject makes the course engaging and enjoyable. After taking her class twice, I declared a major in English. Highly recommended!
This professor was amazing. As long as you do the readings and involve yourself in class discussions you will do Great. You must put in the work but if you do it is rewarding in the end. This professor was very kind and caring towards each and everyone of her students. She is very passionate in all she does.
You will need to read a lot before class, days in class will start with a 10 question quiz about the readings. If you struggle BUT put in the effort of reading and doing the quiz Professor Kaplowtiz will see that and will be as accommodating as possible. She is very approachable and caring of students needs.
I took professor Kaplowitz LIT326 class in spring 2024, I can say I was pleasantly surprised. Yes there is a lot of reading but that is part of the process in becoming an intellectual reader and writer. Most if not all books were entertaining and bring up important topics within our criminal justice system. I would highly recommend this class!
This professor was very difficult in my opinion and the class does require very heavy reading however if you dedicate a lot of time to the readings, you will have no problem with the everyday quizzes. Take the class if you want to challenge yourself. You will learn how to be more detail focused.
One of the best I've taken in Literature and in general! Consisted of a very organized schedule of literary works from which students would read a certain number of pages. Quizzes would be constructed from these select pages and taken at the beginning of each class. Final exam was hefty, but a breeze to go through if one had done the readings.
Professor Kaplowitz runs a challenging but rewarding class. The heavy reading load requires dedication, but her passion for the subject makes it engaging. Unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for my study prep.
Worse professor ever, her lesson plan is extremely boring and it feels repetitive! Don't take this class if you don't want to take quizzes everyday.
We read The Odyssey, The Iliad, The Oresteia, and The Theban Plays. We had to have physical copies of all and had to take a quiz on the reading pretty much every class. We had 20 quizzes, I believe, and as long as you read, they are so easy! We also had a short paper on pieces from The Met. I enjoyed the class and think the professor is great.
50-100 pages every week, can be difficult if taking other heavy classes as well. She claims that if you read the books you will do good on the quizzes, but her questions are extremely niche and specific you need to reread the readings atleast twice to be able to answer her difficult questions. She can also sometimes be rude. Do not recommend.
If you can't read a chapter or two on your train ride home and answer 10 questions on a weekly quiz, you're the problem. Professor Kaplowitz is amazing, and although the class can be a bit boring at times, it is extremely rewarding. This will be my third time taking her, and I have no complaints.
Her personality as an instructor is atrocious and completely lacking in empathy or professionalism. She demonstrates no understanding of real-life obligations students may face. Missing even a single class is treated as inexcusable, regardless of valid documentation. Even with a doctor's note or official military orders, she shows no flexibility.
Loved her class, The reading is very heavy but you will learn a lot! She cares about students and you have a quiz every class!
IF YOU WANT YOUR GPA TO DROP!!!!!!!! Then take your class, there is so much reading and a quiz every time you see her for the reading. If you do not read, you fail the class, as her quizzes are worth 55% of your grade.
Bring a blanket with you every time you come to class! As this professor assigns a reading for her class, every time you see her, you read four books in total. Yes, there are quizzes for the readings you need to complete, as they are detailed questions (What was the name of the pet?).
DO NOT TAKE! If you do not participate, then you are going to get your grade dropped. Quizzes are a big part of your grade 55%.
I would rather mop the ocean then attend another lecture of hers.
GPA DROPPER! Quiz-heavy, you have to answer 10 questions every time you see here and they are based on the books you have to read, and you read 60-100 pages.
you have to read 30-60 pages and have a quiz every single class, not fair at all
Do not take I took it thinking it was going to be an essay class, but no I am wrong this class was hard especially if you had another books or readings to do for other class has he gives so much readings for the quiz
made me never want to go to law school again, actually lost my will to live
IF YOU WANT TO PLAY AROUND WITH YOUR GPA AND ARE BORED!! Then go take the class, have fun, though.
SHE IS NOT CARING AT ALL. ALL SHE CARED ABOUT WAS IF YOU READ THEM BOOKS THAT SHE GIVES AND SHE GIVES QUIZES EVERY TIME YOU SEE HER. They are 10 questions, AND THEY ARE written and the same multiple-choice choices, WRITING, AND IF you are late, THEN YOU cannot take the test.
If you like to read, take the class. It's like 50 pages with a quiz each class to make sure you read it. Easiest class I've ever taken and I'm going on semester 3 with her. She doesn't use technology, but she is the sweetest kindest professor. These people are just upset they can't read and actually have to work for their classes
This was a very engaging class. The books were interesting and her grading criteria is clear. Very quiz heavy and I recommend that you take detailed notes. Professor Kaplowitz is a very kind and helpful professor.
Professor Kaplowitz is a wonderful professor who wants the best for her students. Read about 50 pages per class, easy quizzes everyday (pay attention to detail), books chosen are really interesting, Can make up quizzes you missed. Negative reviews are coming from those who don't like reading and never communicated with the professor.
Read about 30-50 pages per class just to see if you are reading, quizzes everyday (easy as this is coming from someone who doesn't like reading) When I miss a day or come in late, I will communicate with the professor and just take the quiz the next day before class.
It's a 300-level literature class, so yes, reading is required. Quizzes come straight from the text. I don't like reading, but I actually read the chapters and earned an A. Professor K is fair and rewards effort. Read = Pass.
Some people think you can pass a Lit 300 class without reading. Spoiler: you can't. I actually did the work and earned an A. Professor K is fair and grades based on effort. If you read, you pass. If not… well, good luck.
Professor Kaplowitz is a great professor who gives great insight into the books you'll read for her class. This is a great course for those that love reading and retain what they read in the book. You'll have a 10 questions quiz every class about each of the readings, a final essay, and a final exam. Remember what you read and participate!
Prof. Kaplowitz was a wonderful professor throughout the entire semester. Her expectations are clear from the very start; participation goes a long way. The quizzes can be overwhelming, but the difficulty lightens because the novels are all captivating. My experience in her class was phenomenal. Put in the work, and you will succeed.
She's a wonderful professor, and the course is great! I struggled with the books at first, but her class helped me really understand them. All you have to do is actually read and talk about what interested you, and she appreciates genuine engagement. If you have a bad memory like I do, I definitely recommend taking notes on the books. -E
Was it an easy A? No. Professor Kaplowitz will make you earn it. However, easy is OVERRATED. She taught me how to be a better reader, communicator, debater, and overall student. I struggled at first and she was more than happy to support. She did more to help me grow than any other professor has. Take her course. She'll build you up if you let her.
Professor Kaplowitz is a great professor who provides insightful and interesting books to read throughout the semester. Be sure to read! She is a consistent grader based on effort and loves engagement as well. She helped me become more in touch with literature than I was before. I would 100% recommend this professor and this class!
For students who love to read and discuss literature, Professor Kaplowitz is a standout. Her insights deeply enrich the course material, she has read the novels multiple times. Be prepared, her class requires staying on top of the reading but is lightwork otherwise. You'll have a brief quiz on the reading at the start of each class.
The Professor was wonderful. Not only are the class discussion are fun and engaging, but so are the books we read. This is not your typical boring lecture heavy class, but a space to give your opinions on the novels we read. As for grading, If you read the book, you pass with an A in this class..seriously.
This is a LIT class so expect to read a lot. She has quizzes every class to prove you actually did the reading, they were quiet easy, just pay attention. She was nice and willing to make you succeed, but don't think this is an easy A, you need to put in the work to get a good grade. Discussions are really fun especially if you did the reading.
