BORING. Had interesting material to work with and she made it dull. Stands completely still during class. Reads directly from overheads. Does not exhibit a good knowledge of course material. Avoid at all costs.
makes me hate the class. i find the textbook interesting, but she makes the class extremely boring. doesnt seem to know what she's going to talk about until the second that she reaches the slide on the overhead. this class is a good one to take, just not with her.
Very boring and has no clue whats she's talking about. Just because you study doesn't mean you'll do well.... TERRIBLE
Horrible class! Id never recommend anyone take this course for this prof. This class is very dull; you dont have to attend class because she reads everything from the slides.. and its impossible to do well on her tests even if you study A LOT
not good, class avg is 40 adn she doesnt care
I didn't think she was that bad . . . Just make sure you read and study the text. Her tests are multiple choice and short answer. If you get her 8:30 class, sometimes she'll feel bad for you and let you out a little early. Just read the book and pay attention, you'll do fine.
Not a great prof. Comes across as very disorganized. Seems like she would be lost in her lectures if she didn't have the slides and notes. When asked questions by class answer is usually 'that could be' or 'That is a possibility'. Class seems easy but tests are hard. Not recommended.
I find Professor MacDonald to be a very fair prof. Her test are a little tricky but if you study hard and actually know the material rather than just memorizing it you'll do fine. She gives lots of examples in class so that you understand exactly what she's talking about. I really recommend this class. :)
Seems kind of unorganized, tests are pretty difficult, interesting course though, and many examples are given to help you understand the material
not a great teacher, class is boring and grade is too low.
This prof trys.. but does get far. She is always confused about what she is trying to say..and even if you go to class and pay attition.. you still have a hard time understanding it..she seems like a nice person.. but shes a horrible teacher..her tests are VERY hard and she words everything completly different then she had on the class slides :(
NEVER TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER AGAIN. SHE DOES NOT KNOW WHAT SHE IS DOING IN CLASS, AND THE QUIZ ARE HARD. NEVER NEVER NEVER AGAIN.
REALLY REALLY A BAD PROFESSOR! SEEMS KIND BUT MARKS ARE VERY LOW, TESTS ARE EXTREMELY HARD, I DON'T KONW WHY SHE DID NOT STAY AT MSVU....I HAVE TO SAY SMU DOES NOT WELCOME YOU! I RECOMMEND YOU NOT TO TAKE HER COURSES AT ALL. SHE IS A WITCH. HER CLASS IS SOOOOO BORING. AND SHE IS THE ONLY PROF WHO TEACHES PSYC1250 HAS A FINAL TEST.
I don't know what everyone is talking about. The class is somewhat boring, but her lectures are very clear and she tells you exactly what to expect on tests. Stop whining.

very bad prof
I just want to say ~~~~~~~~~~ dont take her class
Karen is an interesting instructor. The research examples she gives really help to illustrate the concepts in the text. I didn't find her exams difficult if you attended class and read the textbook. Her public speaking needs some work, but overall, I found this to be a very informative class.
She was often confused about what she was teaching, she would start a sentence... stop to search for words, and then never finish what she was saying. She was extremely boring to listen to. The wording in her multiple choice questions was hard to understand. She did go over what would be on midterms, but the difficult wording made tests hard.
Ive Gone too 3 Classes and it seems that this prof is hands down the best i have had yet she's laid back and is always talking about something relevent much better then Smythe my SOC Prof
Sure, she seems like a nice woman but I do not pay the big money for that. Her class is based soley on the boring book, but she words everything completely different on her exams AND throws in quite a few trick questions. Her teaching assistants suck too. Thanks for wearing the loud track pants and constantly walking around during our final!
DO NOT TAKE A COURSE FROM THIS PROFESSOR.Going to class is useless because she only reads the pdrive notes. You can study for weeks and still do****ty on her tests because she changes the wording of everything and produces many trick questions. She lies to students, telling them the test marks are posted when the are not.these lies go on for weeks!!
Very, very boring. Went to 3 classes, then only showed up for exams. Read the book and Pdrive notes and you'll do good. TA's are brutal & take 4EVER to post marks. Good independant study class. Tests are pretty hard, wording is all mixed up. Short answer Q's are hard! who gives short ans. Q's in a class os 250?? Hello!!

Very, very boring class! The exams are horrible and very hard to understand. She just reads from slides that were basically scanned from the text book anyway. One of my worst professors EVER!
Have to say people are right, tests are worded differently than the slides, but if you know the material and don't just memorize, the tests are too bad. Karen was awesome, responded to all my emails very quickly, very willing to help out with any questions. If you go to class, read, and study...you should do fine. Would take a class with her again.
Definitely not my favorite prof. She knows her stuff and her tests (MC's and short answers) aren't too hard, but she is sooooo boring. Seriously, if you take her 8:30am class you will fall asleep. Make sure you read the book, some questions on her tests are from things we hadn't gone over in class.
I was so excited to be taking this class... and she completely ruined it. I found the book veryy dry and she is monotoned so that didn't help spark up an interest either... aviod this class if possible.

The class is not boring if you LIKE psychology! If you go to class and read the book you will do fine! Also, there was a website on the back of my Social Behaviour Book that had online quizzes...the questions from the quizzes are exactly the same as the exam!!!!!!
Despite what everyone else says, I, so far am enjoying both this course and this professor. If you go to class, pay attention and write down her examples you will do well. First test I scored much higher than the class average itself.
GREAT prof. spoon feeds you all the notes. dont even bother buying the text book she takes all her notes from her slide which SHE POSTS. her multiple choice are a little tricky. study the night before and you'll know all the short answer. take this course.
Boring professor. Tests are worded terribly. For a class that's supposed to be straight forward and interesting, it was awful. don't take it with her!
Karen likes to stray away during class and will do anything to delay class starting. It's SO important to go to her class. She does not post all of her notes, only select slides and discussions that took place in place are ALWAYS on her test. I cannot stress how important it is to go to class. Very interesting course but her tests are hard.
It's SO important to go to her class. She does not post all of her notes, only select slides and discussions that took place in place are ALWAYS on her test. I cannot stress how important it is to go to class. Very interesting course. Tests are hard. Have to really know psyc studies done in the past.
Good prof, she's pretty clear. Her tests are a little tricky with the multiple choice, short answers are pretty easy. Copy her notes in class, even though she'll tell you not to. She doesn't post the full powerpoint on blackboard and you NEED those notes that are missing to do well! Overall her class was fairly easy with studying!
She is a nice enough lady, but personally I wasn't a huge fan. If you're good at reading the book and teaching yourself an entire course, then by all means go for it, because that's what I did, and it was a pretty easy A. She takes forever to get marks back to you, and she isn't helpful at all, but as long as you use the iStudy you'll do fine.
Nice lady but rambles about irrelevant information, you have to go to her class because everything on her tests comes from her lectures. Avoid her if you can.
Attended her class twice all semester and passed with a B+. Read the text and you won't have to attend her lectures.
Her lectures were irrelevant to everything on her exams. Friendly but not helpful, you should defiantly look for another prof if you are considering her.
Awful prof. Really nice lady but lectures are beyond intolerable.. rambles about irrelevant information. However she always puts examples she uses in class on the tests soo... She does post powerpoints but they are not the ones she uses in class and are very incomplete. Avoid her if you can.
One of my favorite courses that I've taken & very interesting with the way she teaches & makes the class more fun for learning. This class is recommended & should definitely consider taking it with Karen.
Prof is very nice, but lectures are dry, didnt enjoy the class at all
Karen is the best Professor I have ever had! She is solo nice and so friendly. She was a tad boring in class but mainly because she basically just read off the slides word for word. The positive to that is that you never had to go to class because she posts everything online. Awesome Prof and easy course! I highly recommend Karen for any course!
She is a bit of an air head but super sweet. Her examples are reall helpful and shes very fair. If you read the textbook you should be fine, I missed more then half the lectures and got a B+.
Easy class, lectures are pointless, the text book has you covered just pick out the key points. As for her, she's an air head, disorganized and tends to spend most of the class talking to the students in the front. She's not necessary bad, but she's not very good. Easy marker though.
I took 2 courses with Karen and passed both with an A! Her lectures are boring, but the examples are useful & often put in the midterms. She post all her lectures online and midterms requires a lot of memorization. Easy grade if you study and understand the material.
Super sweet and always willing to help. She tends to get off track but it makes her down to earth if you ask me. Only thing that really bothers me is i always felt like i got 100 on the test and ended up with 80. I think she may word things weird or something..
I loved this class. Yes, she can get off topic more often than not but I really enjoyed her lectures and found the examples she gave very helpful in understanding the material. Would definitely recommend this course and prof.
Karen is a great person and I enjoyed her lectures. Unfortunately, the online quizzes did not match the material covered accurately (you do them every week). I found this very frustrating, since no matter how hard you study it is irrelevant, since some questions were even wrong. You do not need to attend class to get an A, textbook is used well.
I like her as a person but she rambles in her lectures and makes it hard for me to pay attention. Textbook is not necessary for her course, but you could skip class and just read that and probably get at least a B. Overall, it's an easy course to do well in.
She posts the slides online and makes good use of the text book. There are online quizzes to do every week but sometimes they cover material from slides that have been posted but have not been covered in class. She gives pop in class assignments but attendance is not mandatory. It is easy to pass this subject. Also she's McDonald not MacDonald.
Extremely disorganized but still a nice person, gets off topic all the time. Lots of multiple choice based off of videos and exercises done in class so go to class.
Alright prof... She gets off track a lot, pretty unorganized. Go to the lectures and you'll do fine, she uses examples on tests from material talked about in class, not in the text book.
This was Professor MacDonald's first time teaching Psych1230. She was so unorganized and didn't seem prepared for the lectures. It was as if she was reading powerpoint slides that someone else made for her. Very boring. I will not take a class with her again.
Karen is a nice women, but the questions she puts on test can be confusing to pick an answer and are very obviously not questions she created to fit her material.
Karen is one of the sweetest prof out there! However, Intro is a hard course, I had to take it because i needed to. (PLEASE DONT WASTE YOUR ELECTIVES ON INTRO COURSES). Attendance is very necessary bc in most of her exams she always refers to a statement she said in class. I just used the book for graphs otherwise her slides were enough!
I'd rather watch grass dry. She was very nice, but made class extremely boring. I learned more when I studied on my own then going to her lectures. She didn't stay on topic, often got distracted, and made it very hard to pay attention.
Nice woman, terrible educator. She is extremely disorganized and rambles. She often googles her own concepts because she forgets what she is talking about. Her teaching assistant marks everything, and her TA hadn't even taken the course and corrected things wrong. Don't pay to take this class because you will be teaching yourself.
Nice woman but super disorganized. Things were never post on brightspace properly with lots of technical errors. She is unclear on half of the topics she is trying to teach and has openly admitted not understanding certain concepts, even though they are still fair game for the tests. I was able to teach myself with the textbook.
She has difficulty speaking. Impossible to follow. Makes you want to rethink your major if you have her. She is not helpful outside of class. She forgets which class she is teaching and sometimes forgets what school she is at. Its pretty terrible. Stay away
She drones on about her personal life and writes the most terribly worded questions I have ever encountered. Awful prof who cannot make up her own mind and does not care about her students.
Karen is super nice and always checks in with students, she makes the material fun and interactive. However, she can be a little disorganized but I would not hold it against her. If you attend class and read the textbook/powerpoints you will be fine. She has weekly quizzes and a few tests and will give bonus marks at the end of term. I liked her!
Karen is very kind to her student. She does have participation "quizzes" but they are not graded, it's just to make sure students are paying attention. You do have to read the textbook but it's available online. Her weekly quizzes are easy and her tests are easy if you read the textbook. Her lessons are well thought out!
This woman spent half of the zoom calls saying "umm" "ahhh" and responding to people in the chat talking about Greys Anatomy, she struggles to form a sentence. Then cut quiz times in half for "academic integrity" but it actually just made people struggle. Also sent us an angry email about the final, and threatened to have every prof shorten finals.
I found this year quite challenging overall and her course did nothing to appease that. She has so many things happening in the week which would have been fine for me pre-Covid times but I really think she should work on adapting the number of things student have to do online. It was really hard for me to keep up given my circumstances at home.
I loved her class probably my favourite teacher my first year at SMU. The class is not hard if you pay attention and shes funny. No need to even open the text book most questions are directly from things she said in class
Very friendly. The course is pretty difficult, but if you pay attention and quiz yourself outside of class then it's easier. She tries hard to make it as interesting as possible. She even throws in some Kahoot games. The assignments are pretty light, the usually consist of a TEDTalk, and then 3 to 4 sentences to show you actually thought about it.
This prof is very disorganized. she would often begin her lecture by trying to figure out what she was going to walk about and would get off track often. she was a reasonable marker and a nice enough person but definitely made this course more difficult to complete.
Professor Macdonald I would say is nothing more than an average prof. This intro to Psych course is unlike all the others and the tests are very heavy. Although she is very knowledgeable on the material covered she is very unorganized and takes a while to respond to emails. I wouldn't take again.
Karen is a great person, super funny and engaging but is a very tough grader. If you miss one lecture you're gonna fail the quiz or test that goes along with it.
Karen is a great person, very kind and funny, however it's very hard to follow along with her lectures. I find the textbook sometimes explained concepts better than how she did. There was usually a quiz every weekend (fairly easy if you studied), a discussion post, and an exercise/assignment every week, so be prepared to work and read.
A nice person but didnt teach well. She is really unorganized and I found her lectures difficult to pay attention to as she was all over the place. She would often mis-post things on bright space or forget to post them at all until two days before the final exam. I have emailed her expressing concerns and never got actual help from her.
She's a bit of a mess and her lectures are slow but if you find the content interesting it's worth it. Her quizzes are fairly easy (1min/question) The participation and discussion forums are easy. She also puts videos for extra understanding on Brightspace but she's overall a super nice person and prof and you can get bonus points that are worth it
Karen's a kind professor and overall the class was very interesting to me. There were a few downfalls though. Her lectures got off track very easily and became hard to stay engaged in. I tried multiple times to reach her through email and the issue wasn't revolved until the end of the term. A few times she included test material we hadn't gone over
I really didnt have a problem with Karen. Had her for intro to Psyc online and she tends to get really distracted during her lectures + struggles with zoom. However she tries to be funny and shes really sweet. Most times theres 1 quiz and one discussion post a week, personally I didnt touch the book and got an A+ so Id say the material is easy
Karen is honestly one of the most caring and most kind profs I have ever had. She really cares about her students and I would hands down take another one of her classes. As long as you pay attention in class and do the work you will be fine.
For an online class, she is NOT the professor I'd recommend, but for in-person classes, she's honestly great! She cares about the subject matter and makes it easy to understand. Her in-class-assignments are awful, and she's a pretty tough grader, but still a good professor and kind person.
Karen is a great prof, she cares about her students and her lectures are interesting. Outlines are given for Midterms and tests are exactly what she says will be on them. She gives smaller applied activities for marks and discussions which help boost your grade. Definitely would take again
Professor McDonald was a dream to have for Memory Psych; she was very accommodating and funny while still getting lecture material across effectively. She has a very casual style of teaching which promotes a comfortable atmosphere and provides outlines for all tests that facilitate easy studying. Would definitely take another class with her!!
Karen was super nice and her lectures were interesting! I would definitely not skip class as there are many activities that aren't hard and can boost your mark. She was always available for questions and she's super easy to talk to and understand! Loved her!
No matter what I handed in, getting above a 75% would be impossible, and I'm a psych major with an average of A- in my two other psychology courses. Her grading system is very vague and she leaves you no feedback, gets off topic frequently, and her slideshows are very vague too, you can't study off of them unless you were at the lecture. Bad class.
She is the most friendly professor I've ever had. The lecture quality was great.
Easy class as long as you put the effort. Attendance is mandatory since there is in class activities that are easy 100's as long as you submit it. Also there is an available 3% bonus if you do questionnaires through the SMU psych department which are extremely easy. Interesting class and easy to learn and I'm not even a psych major.
You will either love or hate Karen. She talks a lot and sometimes strays. She does in-class activities for grades. There are discussion forums, two tests and a final. Her tests are easy once you listen in class and do the readings. The discussion forums are easy once you answer all the questions with moderate detail. Hard to fail this course.
This professor doesn't give proper feedback on tests, and spouts the same things over and over again. In addition, she's almost always late, sometimes up to 15 minutes late. She also blamed us for our awful grades when the class average on the tests were 68%.
You cannot do well on Karen's tests unless you have detail-oriented notes and study study study. She warns the class from the beginning that she has long, heavy tests. I almost failed the first (after days of studying) but got way above class average for the second one after studying even harder. I liked her, but she does trail off sometimes.
She is very disorganized and often shows up 15+ minutes late to class. Her lectures often go off on tangents that have nothing to do with the course material. The videos she assigns often have nothing to do with what we are learning, and the TA was a very strict grader. Exams are a coin flip and can sometimes be unnecessarily difficult.
Note tech savy, prof is unresposive and cannot communicate
Very nice lady but tends to ramble a bit during lectures. She tests exactly what is on her lecture slides so you really just have to take notes. In class assignments that are not posted so you have to attend class to get a grade but they are short and easy.
A nice but very unorganized teacher who structures her class very poorly. She gives a quiz every class just to make people show up. She gets off topic in lectures and doesn't have the answer to a lot of questions. The one highlight I'll give her is she lays out everything you need to know for tests clearly. If you test well you will do well.
Always late, rambles on and on about things that have nothing to do with the class, Gives no time for some of these assignments to be due. The exams have a lot of trick questions on them that could be 50/50
Personally I never bought the textbook, and I think I did fairly well in the class. She can be funny and try to make a boring course fun. Although she gets very sidetracked very easy. She doesn't explain things very well. She isn't tech savvy at all so everything looks like a quiz instead of an assignment. You have to be there for every class.
if you can avoid taking this professors class do so. she is rude and the tests are nothing like the material covered in class.
I do not recommend this class. She gets sooo sidetracked and starts talking about random things not important to the lecture at all, so it was very easy for me to lose my train of thought.
I really enjoyed this professor's classes. While some ratings say she gets sidetracked, I found it funny and welcoming, which made me comfortable attending class. She is genuinely kind, and going to lectures made the applied activities and final exam easier since many questions were based on in class content.
