She expects a lot from her students, but she's incredibly friendly, funny, and helpful. She's easy to meet with to go over stuff, and she really cares about her students doing well in her classes. She's a great teacher. Just make sure you put in your time studying and you'll be just fine since she gives you everything you will need!
The subject matter is a little dull, but she's perky. She does expect alot out of non major students, but she teaches you to work.
She expects a lot, but she explains everything well. As long as you go to class you'll be fine!
overall hate her!
tests were hard, included the randomest questions from the class and were all tricky multiple choice. this class covered a massive amount of info for a 100 non-major class; i would NOT take her again, look for another prof for this class.
karen is a very helpful professor, but her exams and quizzes are extremely hard. They are multiple choice, and when you narrow answers down to about two....you are definitely bound to get the answer wrong. If I were you, I would look for an easier professor.
She was a really good teacher, expects a lot from her students but if you go to class and do the assignments, its pretty easy and fun most of the time too. even though i got a D, it was a cool class
Very good teacher! She respects her students and is willing and available to help, she is also very approachable. Karen is passionate about teaching which isn't something you see too often. She expects you to show up to class so you better! She also won't do work FOR you, she will only help you. If you dont want to challenge yourself, dont take her
Very clear and helpful whenever needed. She's very easy to get along with, and cares about her students. She will challenge you, but overall isn't too hard. She teaches this class perfectly.
She is very knowledgeable and her tests are very fair. I learned a lot in this class. If you go to class and study the notes, this is an enjoyable and relatively easy class.
Absolutely a helpful professor! She's really nice and willing to help her students to get high grade in her class. Go to class frequently and study your note, you'll be easily have a B
She was the best teacher I ever had. I was an anthro major and changed my major after taking her class. I would definitely recommend her. Just be prepared to work show up to class on time, and cell phone off. She rocks! Thanks Karen for a great class!
She wants you to do well and has a lot of good information. She treats you like a little kid and is gets really irritated about cell phones. Her tests are hard, and the 10 point quizzes are even worse. Don' take her.
DON'T TAKE HER!!! She makes the material much more difficult than it needs to be. Her quizzes are terribly hard. She tries to trick you on the quizzes by asking real difficult questions that go way to indepth, and her tests cover like 5 chapters and they are hard as well. AGAIN, DON'T TAKE HER!!!
Loved her class! I was dreading taking a biology course, but ended up loving the class. It isn't hard as long as you review for the quizzes. If you need a science course take her!
Best teacher I have ever had! So nice and made the information enjoyable.
okay, ya this lady is smart, but this class was the most uninteresting, useless class and I failed it along with the rest of my friends. It is impossible to pass her tests and she is annoying and completely unflexible. It was the worst class i've ever taken in my entire life. Dont waste your time, dont take this class, period.
Horrible! Rude, quizzes and tests very hard, extremely boring class. She asks very broad questions and expects specific answers then marks the answer wrong even though it was correct. Don't take her. Look for another profesor!
I loved her. I had an extremely hard time personally the quarter I took her class, and she made every opportunity available for me to keep up/make up work. She is extremely helpful and if you just study (like you're supposed to do for EVERY class) you'll do fine!
I LOVED HER! I had her for both BIOS 103 & 221. She expects you to study the material, and have common courtesy. All of her tests and quizzes were fair. She's very clear on what she expects, all you have to do is go to class, and study. She has slides, but doesn't put up everything. She's not rude, she just expects you to be respectful.
Do what your suppose to do and its a breeze..
she is a really good teacher. sometimes she babbles about stuff that you dont really need to know. if you are doing poorly GO IN AND SEE HER! she is really helpful and if she notices that you are in between grades and you have come to her then she will help you out
Karen is a very FAIR professor. You will know exactly what is going to be on quizzes and exams. Study a little bit and go to SI a few times and you'll do fine. Not really necessary to buy the book. I only used it one or two times the whole quarter
She is a great professor! As long as you study for exams, you will do fine. The class was challenging and I learned a lot. She is very passionate about biology.
This was one of my favorite classes! Karen is a great teacher! As long as you're willing to learn and put forth an effort to do so, you'll enjoy this class.
I actually had her for Bios 103 and loved the class, so I took 221. You do not have to read the book AT ALL because she covers everything in class. You have to go to class and study. It's very relevent, interesting info. She is very fair and knows what she is talking about. She is willing to meet with students. So far my fav professor and class!
Prof Mammone is absolutely great. I've had a rough quarter for a multitude of reasons, but her class was always very interesting, and she was funny enough to brighten my mornings. She's very fair. She expects things of you, but if you do what is asked you'll be fine. You don't really need the book, but if you learn best from reading its worth it
By far the WORST teacher i've ever met. She is extremley rude, she is not willing to help and she treats you like you are s****of the earth. Do not take her unless you want to fail.
She is extremely rude and treats her students like children. One of the most condescending professors I've ever had. I really don't understand why other people like her.
Her tests are hard, and she repeatedly tells the class that half of you will fail.
BEST teacher here. She really teaches. Her class isn't easy but you don't have to read the book to do well, you just have to attend class and take good notes. She gives outside information and really tells us what's going on. Anyone who hated this class didn't go everyday. Honestly she's a phenomenal teacher, you just have to attend class.
Explains course very clearly, gets to the point.
She taught the animal kingdom. She's an AWFUL teacher. The first exam average was a D- and the class size is around 140 people! If you take this class, don't take her; she teaches the class like it is a 300 level class, not 100 level. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i completely agree with the two comments below mine... she expected WAY too much out of her students when it is just a 100 level class and admitted to us that she wanted us to suffer. she is really passionate about what she teaches which is the only thing that makes it slightly interesting, but besides that i would not recommend taking her.
Horrible teacher, expected WAYYYY to much out of students. this class is NOT for majors, so dont treat it like your students are going to go out in the world and explore the "animal kingdom" Tests were hard, and was just plain MEAN.
Mammone is a tough, but very fair professor. You have to work to get a good grade in the class. It's worth your time to stay for the entire lab because she will test anything and everything you see on display. Take the time to do all of your prelab and inlab objectives and know the your binder very well.
She expected too much out of students in a 100 level course. Not that I think we had the right to do poorly, but many of us didn't have prior knowledge or interest in biology, which is why we were in the lowest level offered. She seemed very stubborn and defiant when students wanted help. A nice woman, but poor professor.
This class is NOT easy. If you want a throwaway class, don't take this one. She's kind-of rude, but she can be helpful. You really have to apply yourself. Not an easy A.
Everyone complained that this class was too hard, but it was not any harder than a class at a UNIVERSITY should be. If you go in expecting a university-quality education, Mammone is an awesome professor. Pay attention, take notes, get a good grade.
Yuck.
She used her time to teach telling us how to live our lives. Terrible teacher. Would never recommend.
This class is NOT easy. I needed it for a science credit, and I couldn't have made a more terrible choice. The "Animal Kingdom" sounded very interesting to me, because I love animals. This class is very uninteresting. I strongly recommend NOT to take this class, especially if you're a non-major and want an easy A.
Online version of this class is awful. 3 Tests are to be proctored and they are not closely related to the powerpoints she provides. The 3 tests make up 81% of your grade. Do not take the online version of this class. I doubt the in class version is any easier. Too hard for a 103 level course.
This class is very difficult for a 100 level. She puts up powerpoints that have one picture on them and talks about the picture for twenty minutes, and you take notes on what she says. If you don't go to class, you won't have any notes. She posts the powerpoints on Blackboard but they are worthless. The class is 3 exams. No homework. Not easy A
This was a very difficult class. If you go to every class, you should do well. She tells you everything you know... DO NOT BUY THE BOOK. The true key to getting an A is going to class everyday... but even then... it is HARD
Not sure why everyone is saying she's so hard. 100 level just means it's broad. And she tells you that. She does a lot to help you study, and it has helped me a lot. She actually cares about what she is teaching. Go to every class and you will do fine.
Really she's not that bad. Its a had class due to alot of memorization and wierd terms you've never heard before. But its certianly never boring. There are enough cool animal pictures to captivate a 5 year old. Just get the wierd vocab down and make sure you know the subphylums and you will be fine
One of the most difficult classes I've taken & I'm a third year. Too hard, considering I got a D+ and I still feel completely educated on the topics in the course. However, she is extremely passionate and does teach well. I actually found a way to enjoy the class even though I got a D.
Karen's class definitely wasn't and easy one. I went to every SI session and attended every class and still got a B+. You have to attend class every day, take detailed notes, and study at least a week in advance to do well. But she is an awesome teacher and i learned so much. Only take if you are willing to do the work and study.
As long as you are prepared to study for her 3 exams, then you should have no problem maintaining an A. Attend class and SI sessions and take notes, and you should be fine; I was. Karen stresses the importance of attendance because that is where you will get your information for tests. It's honestly not that hard, just study!
Can describe her attitude in two words: power trip. Just because some may not be as educated as you is no reason to act condescending and downright rude. She needs to learn that there are other opinions in the world other than hers and here is a newsflash...it is OK to admit when you are wrong.
abolutely avoid this class if you can. she doesn't at all prepare you for exams & barely helps you. she makes you feel lie you need the book, but i basically waisted 100 bucks because it doesn't do much good. all she does is talk about personal stuff & expects you to know really small details for the tests. dredded going to class!!
Awesome Professor! Very helpful. Interesting class.
I missed graduating with a 4.0 because of her. This was the only B that I got in four years of college. She had me confused with another student with a similiar name and gave me a wrong grade. I didn't catch it until the day before graduation because I thought I got an A. I contacted her but she said that she would not change it.
Great professor! Don't be intimidated by how strict she sounds on the first day of class, you really just need to show up to learn. If you go to class and take good notes, esp. on important topics that she stresses, you should have no problem passing. Also studying every week helps too, don't wait 2 days before the exam to study, or you're screwed
GREAT WOMAN!I would recommend taking this course over the summer. She gets more personal with her students and your able to understand her better. Make flashcards after every lecture, and listen to what she says because it's usually on the test. I barely even used the booked. I would hold off on buying it.
This class is so terrible. I thought i sounded fun, but she literally does not help you at all. She wastes her time talking about global warming all the time and there are only three exams and theyre very difficult exams...
I took this class online and really enjoyed it! As long as you keep up with the powerpoints (which she narrates)and weekly quizzes, take good notes, you're almost guaranteed an A. There's no surprises come exam day, everything on the exam is included in the studyguides provided. You are never required to use anything from the textbook.
This is litterally the worst teacher I have ever had. Super rude, smug and full of herself. she is fine with over half of her class failing or getting a "D" in her class. She sucks at communicating and I've never wanted to kick a teacher in the teeth more than this Bi*ch
Very nice professor. Do not only copy the powerpoints, but listen to what she says because there will be questions about stuff not on powerpoints but covered in class. Very organized. SI sessions help a lot too. Make flashcards every day after class not just right before the test and do the case studies and read the articles she gives you!
One of the worst teachers I've ever had she doesn't help you at all her exams are impossible to anyone that wasn't a valedictorian at their school. Only three exams and power points everyday. Ruined my gpa and she was not helpful at all. DON't TAKE THIS CLASS
The class is hard, to succeed in this class you need to take detailed notes and study every day, power points every day but i wouldn't just copy them, listen to what she says and takes notes from that. The class is interesting but don't think that its easy because it is a 100 level class.
She puts up PP online but a lot of info on her test in said in class. She gives some of the hardest test, so start studynig right away. No curve. She is always willing to help, but you need to try hard and go to SI sessions. Good luck..
This class is really not that bad. Like any class you take, it is helpful to go to class and take GOOD notes. If you do that, then you will do fine on the tests. She gives you really extensive review power points before the test, so if you took good notes and paid attention then you shouldn't have a problem. Just go to class, and you're good.
She's very monotone and she tends to speed through her lectures. The class can actually be very interesting and open your eyes to things you didn't know. She does put her powerpoints online so PRINT THOSE OFF and take notes. The exams are very detailed and can be hard, but I got a B+ on them. Just depends on your study skills.
Although there was a lot of material, as long as you studied for the tests it was easy to get a B if not an A. She posted all of her power points online, and she never put anything on the tests that she didn't go over in class. She is monotone but I enjoyed her sense of humor so much and it really made the class a lot easier to sit through.
TAKE THIS CLASS. Seriously. I took it online and her quizzes and exams are directly out of the power point. don't bother buying the textbook. Literally, just study the lectures and you are in good shape. I got 100% on almost every exama because I just studied the lectures. Also, the quizzes...know them for test days. You will see them again! TAKE!!
She is a very nice person but not the best professor. The class mostly focuses on worms for the first 7 weeks before studying more relative animals
I really liked Karens class. It was difficult, but she had a lot of good lectures and was really passionate about making sure you know more about your body than you did when you came into it.
I would not recommend this professor. She talks about her personal life in class and often goes off topic. Her tests are difficult and she is not very helpful.
She tells you everything you need to know which are not in her slides. Do not buy the book. She get off topic a lot.
I strongly encourage people NOT to take any classes with this professor. The exams are hard and she is not helpful in the least. I had trouble focusing on the material because she gets sidetracked constantly. Also, her voice is monotonous and she is always rude.
This class was challenging but all it required was notes and studying. Karen gave everything needed to know for the quizzes and tests and supplied study guides for every chapter. She was always willing to help and answer questions and the book wasn't required at all.
Decent class for non-majors. You get what you put in. I didn't look at the lectures until a few days before the exams and I pulled out a C. Exams are proctored, you don't need the book. For a biology class, not too bad. She also has a fairly simple set-up for her online class. She's clear and easy to communicate with.
Do NOT take this class with Karen. First off the class is unnecessarily hard for a non-major 1000 level class. She spends most class time talking about irrelevant stuff &her personal hate for humans &obsession with animals. I literally just listened to her talk about her cat named Itty Bitty Kitty for 15 min. Choose another science requirement!
Would not recommend her to my worst enemy. Attending class is useless and infuriating. She spends at least 10 minutes at the beginning of class talking about her personal life and making excuses for her mistakes. Always has a negative attitude and a rude tone. You can learn everything you need for the exams through the slides + assignments.
Mammone really grew on me. At first i was a bit irritated with her personal anecdotes but they're actually quite interesting. She's very willing to help students and is extremely passionate about her subject. As a non-major I came out with a good grade and knowledge that I'm glad I now have. Give her, and this course, a chance.
I really enjoyed Karen's class! She was straightforward and kind. She did have a lot of personal anecdotes, but I enjoyed that because it made her seem like more of a real person. Go to class, take notes, you'll be fine. Shes easy to talk to in person, if you need help, ASK!
Goes off on completely irrelevant tangents for half the class time, usually about how it's wrong to eat meat or how she's better than other people because she's an enivornmentalist. Worst professor I've had by far.
Terrible. Terrible. Terrible. I learned more about her cats and her personal life than I did about bios. Textbook is useless. Find a different teacher
I was worried about taking this class after reading comments on here.It may have been different for me because I took it online. All I have to say it Karen is wonderful and will work with you. She knows you have a life outside of school and understands things happen. In her online power points she is straight forward and easy to understand!
I found Karen extremely understanding and kind. She gives out her cell number and is very cool about texting her etc. I had medical issues and she helped me out by postponing assignments and quizzes. Decent teacher, great person.
Karen is probably the single worst teacher I've had to endure. If you enjoy listening about how terrible of students you are and how disappointing you than by all means take her class. She's always negative and rude. Don't ask questions unless you want to feel like an idiot. Her course is hard and unclear. Love yourself and don't take Karen.
I found her to be very friendly. She reminds you when assignments are due, gives out her cell number, and is very understanding. She tries to make things interesting. The class was difficult but I'm glad she was the professor. After quizzes, she tells you what you did wrong, and gives encouragement. Great person to have as a prof.
Generally fair in her expectations, however, she can expect a lot of time input for a one credit hour class. Still, she was fair and taught you everything you needed to know. Plus the lab material was definitely interesting to learn about.
Karen really tries to inspire kids to care about their well being alongside teaching everything u need to know. She does get preachy and mad but only when people don''t ask for help and do poorly. Absolutely ask for help as she is very friendly one on one.
As a person I really like her, she is a little preachy at times but I have no complaints. Just show up, pay attention to the slides, STUDY!, and you will be fine. I would for sure take another class taught by her.
The lectures were very confusing and somewhat boring, and she would often ramble on about random things. The slides were often posted on Blackboard, but that didn't help a ton. Fortunately there was SI, which I believe saved me from failing.
Grading scale is strict. Karen definitely loves biology and teaching, that is pretty clear. Other then that, not a very good educator. Talks about herself all the time. Spends 55 min to say we are wrong and makes excuses for her mistakes. Its sad that someone who loves biology is treated like this. Class is neat, but stay away from this professor
Perhaps the worst 'professor' I have ever had. Most of her students fail or near fail, because of her total lack of clarity and communication. Her test material is outrageous information not befitting a 1000 level, let alone even 4000 level class. The only grades were tests which contained material never gone over and only fitting for an zoologist.
Karen makes herself very available to her students. The material in this class is difficult, but her detailed notes make the tests easy if you go to class and do the study guides. She put her slides online but elaborates on them in lectures so go to class. Her personal stories are relevant and interesting, she has a lot of experience in the field.
Great teacher, though i only took her for a lab. good feed back but she grades ver tough and is very specific in what she wants so ask a lot of questions. Loves what she teaches.
What should a pretty easy class turned into a struggle to pass. Exams are hard and study guides are very long. Even though the class should be exciting, she makes it hard to be interested by her boring lectures. Not many assignments are handed out, so you have to do well on exams.
Gives you study guides for each chapter. It's a lot of information but as long as you know whats on the study guide you'll get A's on the exams. She gives a few other assignments like online quizzes (which aren't hard and prepare you for the exam) and case study's to boost your grade besides the 3 or 4 exams you have.
Karen was one of my favorite teachers my first semester. She definitely knows what she is talking about! If you show up to class and print out the powerpoints you will get an A. Study guides are basically the test itself and you get them a week early. Do not be afraid of the bad reviews, it is a great class.
Mammone is very intimidating, but she cares about her students and wants you to do well. Doesn't take attendance, lectures are on blackboard, but I wouldn't skip because she explains things very well in class. Tests aren't bad if you study. She gives out her number so you can always reach her with questions.
The class is very informative if you attend and study appropriately!
She's ok. The material was kind of boring I felt and you need to go to class to take notes because the powerpoints online are pretty vague. Overall she seemed to know a lot about the subject
Although she canceled class quite a bit due to sickness, it was a great class. My favorite class during my first semester of college. If you study you will pass the tests. I learned to study a bit more than I had in the past. Overall, not a bad class and not too hard.
Karen is an amazing women, who are passionate about her job. Her lectures are critical so you must go to class, and as long as you study the material you will do fine on her exams.
This online class is basically just reading over Karen's PPT. Quizzes are 10 pts, papers 5 pts, and exams 100pts. If you don't pass the exams you will fail the class. The exams are timed. Might not be a great class if you have test anxiety. Karen is nice and wants her students to do well.
Karen is very passionate about what she teaches and I enjoyed her lectures. She really knows what she's talking about. Her quizzes are unclear though. She really makes you work for a good grade because all the questions are a more in-depth version of everything she taught. Studying and attendance is imperative. The textbook was a waste of money.
Ms. Mammone was my favorite teacher this past semester! Lectures consisted of her clicking through a powerpoint and the class taking notes. But she always kept the lectures interesting. She was funny and knew a lot about everything she taught. If you don't show up to class, you won't receive a lot of very easy points. Easy class if you take time.
She is a total biology nerd. She tries to scare you by saying that the course is extremely difficult, but it wasn't that bad at all. SI is offered but it was not helpful whatsoever. Her tests are worded in very confusing ways.
KAREN IS AMAZING. Print out the slides before going to class, and write down every word she says. She is brilliant (a little scary) but a great teacher. If you listen and give the class the time it takes you will do well. If you need help text her, she's actually super nice. I was hospitalized during finals and she accommodated and helped me a lot.
One thing that was annoying was that she turned the lights off during her lectures, so if you have her early its tough to stay awake because she doesn't make you that interested. Her slides aren't in detail so you need to show up to take notes. She never seems in a good mood and every assignment is VERY important. Not a fan and would not recommend.
Karen comes off as intimidating, but she is actually very nice. If you go to her office hours she is extremely helpful. She doesn't put hardly anything on the power points, so you have to write down everything she says. But, almost everything she says will be on the test. If you take good notes and study hard you will come out with an A in the clas
Karen is a very nice professor. She may come off intimidating but once i got to know her, she's became one of my favorite professors. However, you do have to try and study for the tests. They are not hard if you do.
The worst professor i have ever had, she really cares about the subject but she cant stay focused while trying to teach. I had her for animal diversity and i would strongly suggest that you don't take this class unless you want to put a lot of work in.
I had Karen for Human Biology and it defiantly took me by surprise. You learn quickly how to properly make your flashcards if you want to pass with a decent grade. Karen is a great prof and lets her love for biology shine though her lectures. I have learned more from her class then any other class I have taken. BETTER STUDY!
Lots of reading. Studying is expected to earn good grade.
Professor Mammone is honestly one of the worst professors I have ever had. She is cold hearted and rude. She does not care at all for your well being. She is a horrible grader and her exams are too difficult. 0/10 would advise taking ANY of her courses.
Professor Mammone is one of the worst professors I have taken ever in my college history. Her exams are absolutely difficult and you truly don't know what to study for. She expects you to know the information as if you are a biology major. Overall, I would rate this class an F and the professor.
Overall, one of the most organized classes I've taken. Expectations were clear and consistent throughout the course, and the material in her lectures is presented in a very logical way that makes it easy to follow. She has a direct way of speaking that made it easy for me to understand and learn from her. Material was really interesting too.
She seems to be a nice person. However, I feel like I am a fairly good student, I always attend class, and I work hard to make sure I am getting the best grade I can. I had to retake her freaking biology 1 lab. I'm pretty sure if I would've had any other teacher I would've been fine, but she is SO hard on students.
Tests make no sense and they are based off her slides which are very brief. There is a book but it was not used. Would not suggest this class at all.
loved her class print the slides out to take notes and its a breeze also went to si regular and that helped
Karen's class has been my favorite so far at OU. I lost my love of science in high school, but this class completely re-sparked my interest. She's very intelligent and I look forward to going to class everyday. As long as you go to SI sessions and put in the work you should do fine.
She expects you to be a biology major after this course. Shes very knowledgeable in what she teaches but I she has a hard time bringing it down to an entry level class. I printed the notes, went to class regular, took notes, did the SGs, read the chapters & went to SI and still didn't know a thing on the exams. Its as if she pulls the ?s from head
Good instructor. If you don't go to class you will more than likely do poorly on exams because it is lecture based. If you attend SI regularly (really recommend) then you should be fine!
I loved Karen. This was not an 'easy A' class. She expected you to work for the grade you received. I think she made the class very interesting and made it easy to pay attention. You need to go to class and pay attention and take good notes and if you do that, you're in good shape.
The lectures are interesting sometimes. She likes to talk about all the cool vacations she's been on, that you haven't. The tests are pretty hard, but the class overall isn't too bad.
Professor Mamone was very funny and also very nice. She is always willing to help with any questions you may have. Attendance isn't mandatory but it will help you understand the lessons better. I suggest you go to SI sessions for this course, it makes everything much easier. Overall this is a good class but you have to study and work hard.
a big complainer, took up too much of my time complaining about how most of us didn't to do well on her last test or something like that. is very uncommitted to her work but expects students to take her seriously. not very available outside of class. boring lectures.
For a non-bio major course, I didn't think this was that bad. She makes the lectures local to you and has adjusted many of her lectures to include less detailed info. Class isn't mandatory, but you won't pass if you don't go. She wrote up study guides for our class and would post them to blackboard which made studying easier. No quizzes, just exams
Karen is such an inspirational professor. She is definitely one of my all time favorites. She loves her job and you can most certainly tell! If you just go to class and listen you will do okay on tests, but I would suggest going to class and taking notes if you want an A. There isn't really homework, so thats nice.
Go to SI! It helps so much!
I loved Karen! She has worked with the same SI leader for a couple years now and together they make a great duo. I also think you can be successful in this class without SI. She really cares about her students. She gives you her cell phone number and will actually text you at any hour! Great overall professor.
Karen Mammone's class was easy because she made topics pretty clear and puts all the lecture notes on blackboard. One tip I have is to not bypass diagrams and pictures from lecture, she will put some questions based on them on tests. Overall, easy class.
If you come to class and take notes the tests are pretty easy. She also cares a lot about how well her students are doing and tries to find the best ways for the class to learn. I really enjoyed her.
Karen is the best. If you want to actually learn, take her class.
I loved having Karen as a professor. She really made the class interesting and made me motivated to do good in the class. Studying outside of class is huge. I didnt use the textbook. The study guides she makes for exams are great help!!
Karen was a great professor. I really enjoyed taking her class. She really cares that her students do well. She really challenges you to do your best. SI sessions are very helpful!
in the beginning of the semester Karen's lecture were extremely interesting. She would give us articles and was very helpful. However, as the semester kept going she started to slow down she ended up talking more about her cat and how shes vegetarian more than the biology. This ended up making most of the workload being taught in SI. overall 7/10
Was really good at explaining material that is not easy to learn. Karen was super personable and overall a really good professor.
At the start of the semester she was very nice to us and very helpful, but once we got through 2 exams started getting snappy and made comments about our intelligence. Expected us as an intro class to be experts in biology. Tests were difficult, averages usually around 70%. SI was helpful, but she was not.
Karen was great at the start of the semester. She seemed to be super nice and personable. Yet, towards the middle, she became slightly testy. When half of our lecture failed an exam, she stood up at the front of the class and told all of us we were lazy, and "sadly most of you will pass this class". She did not seem to care if we passed or not.
Professor Mammone is one of those professors who cares about your grade as much as you do. If you do not show a willingness to work hard for a good grade, then she will not sympathize with you. She simplifies complex processes and conveys the info very clearly. I really enjoyed Karen's class and definitely learned a lot.
Karen is one of those professors where on day one you feel so lucky to have her, but it just kind of goes downhill from there. She's a wonderful woman and is so kind and understanding, but I don't like the way she runs her classes. She's understanding and will work with you, but at the same time she doesn't like to be bothered.
Your grade relies on 3 tests and some quizzes with a couple assignments that wont really help your grade at all. Lectures are extremely boring at first she seemed nice but got more snappy and aggressive through the semester.
Karen has her days where she's a great professor and explains everything beautifully, then other days where it's not articulated well. SI is extremely helpful in this case.
Seemed really nice at first, however, as the semester continued she got more snappy and aggressive at times! DO NOT use your cell phone during class and make sure to ask permission to use your laptop. Lectures can be confusing, she sometimes moves quickly, do ALL think pair shares (essentially e.c.), dont ask for extra credit or rounded up grades.
Her passion for the topic is contagious; I really enjoyed her class. The slides have voice recordings and movie links, and she applies everything to real life. Tests are straight forward. I printed her slides as handout notes (3 slides per page) for notes and studying. Keep up with the presentations and notes for an easy A!
The topics you learn in this class are ridiculous. It's called animal diversity. However, all you learn about is sea creatures and things you will never hear about again. Just don't do it. Also, Karen is incredibly dull.
She is honestly the most boring proffesor I have ever had. Dull personality and is one of those teachers who gets upset at the class for packing up when she still has 2 minutes left. Slides are useless for stufying because they are mainly just pictures and you have to listen to her to get notes which could put you to sleep. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
Lectures are long, but often photograph oriented to be able to identify animals. Passionate about the subject, but not so much about teaching. Snaps at students often for simple questions. Not approachable whatsoever
This class has actually been my favorite class so far in my college career. She is so passionate about what she is talking about and it sparked a love for biology in me. The lectures are mostly just spoken word, but as long as you study, you will do great!
I really enjoyed her class. Bio does not come easy to me and I definitely had to apply myself but Professor Mammone provides everything that you need to do well in class. Her lectures are actually interesting and prepare you for quizzes/exams. Just DO THE STUDY GUIDES & DON'T GET BEHIND & you will be okay!
She's very dull and you only get taught information from the SI sessions. There are too many difficult notes. Also, PowerPoint heavy and never explains anything on the notes or even get to see her. So you have to teach yourself everything from the notes, and then you have to take a 60 question exam in 50 mins.
Prof Mammone was alright, with this semester being online I felt she could have made the lectures better. She adds a lot of stuff in the lectures that she explains you don't need to know. I felt maybe she could have been more involved or had some mandatory class meetings to go over lectures, Biology can be confusing.
The notes are done through powerpoints with assigned readings and audio articles, 3 exams, 5/6 quizzes, 3 writing responses, no homework just study guides which are optional but highly recommend (difference between a C and an A so do them), never used the textbook so dont buy it.
I havent even been in the class for a week and Im done. Nothing on the quiz hardly even correlated with her lecture. & I studied. She is all over the place!!! Her material is beyond confusing. I knew just by how her whole set up is that she just does not have a clear strategy. Would not recommend. Going to fail out because its too confusing.
I took Prof M for fall semester during this COVID crisis. She was nice and cares for her students. That being said, she definitely wasn't my favorite when it comes to academics (nothing on her personally). I felt like her PowerPoints are very sloppy and sometimes hard to interpret. 55 minutes for a 60 question exam is ridiculous to me as well.
I really enjoyed Professor Mammone's class. Just be aware that this is a class that is easy to get behind in. Exams and quizzes reflect the material that is taught in class, so make sure you show up and take good notes. Also, study hard for the exams. They're not super difficult but you will need to start studying several days in advance.
Prof M is amazing. Her lectures are really well made and she throws in some non mandatory reading sometimes on cool stuff related to the course. She really makes sure to remind you when quizzes and exams are so you won't forget. She actually cares about you and your grade. Definitely recommend!
Prof M really cares about her students. Biology is a hard subject for me but, as long as you put in minimal effort, you'll be fine. Do the study guides, double check yourself with Quizlet. She can be intimidating at first but just stay at her pace and take good notes!!
I absolutely loved taking her class. Bio can get difficult but her PowerPoints and study guides really help. The class is mostly graded on quizzes and 3 writing assignments that are all very easy. She is willing to help you understand any topic you are having trouble for and si for this class is super helpful. Just do the study guides!!
Took this first semester of freshman year and loved it. She makes you work for it but the lectures are really interesting and as long as you show up and take good notes, you will do good on the exams. She knows what she's talking about and you learn about really important stuff. Great class
Dr. Mammone explains the lectures and the asynchronous Friday lectures very well. The PowerPoint consists of bullet points, so going to lecture and taking good notes is important to pass. The 60 questions per exam is doable, if you have studied the material, done the quizzes and study guides the professor makes available. One of the best prof I had
She was always willing to help, and always made sure to assist the class with any questions. Made class topics interesting and followed a set schedule. Overall a very nice woman and an amazing professor.
Professor Mammone is very thorough in her lectures. Sometimes, she includes facts and fun information in her slides. Attendance is not mandatory, but you will fall behind if you don't come to class because she explains in further detail. Other than that, the class is pretty easy to pass.
Lectures everyday, very few assignments besides exams that could help boost your grade. If you're not interested in learning about sponges, spiders, and a bunch of sea animals, don't take this class.
As long as you come to class, take notes, pay attention, and communicate, you will do fine in this course. Prof. Mammone is passionate about what they teach and it makes long lectures easier to sit thru. Exams are a very large part of your grade, if you mess up 1 exam, you could be screwed, so do everything you can to keep that from happening.
Rude, worst prof I have had at OU. Kept us 15 minutes over class and literally refused us to leave even though we had other classes to get to. Only graded on quizzes, exams, and 2 writing assignments. Gives you 55 minutes to answer 60 exam questions. If you ask a question most of the time she snaps back and makes you feel stupid for not knowing.
Grades fairly. Always gave the option for an online lecture if you couldn't make it to class/didn't want to. Tests mainly stuck to study guide. Few assignments, but worth many points and can easily get full credit and boost your grade. Very realistic and respectful to students needs academically and personally. Holds study sessions before exams.
Notes are very easy to understand. This class was a clear and easy way to understand biology, I never did too well in bio until this course. It is in your favor to show up to class because she will say info during the lecture that may not necessarily be in the notes but will be on the exam. Super nice and understanding.
Prof. Mammone is very passionate about animals so when learning about a new topic expect her to incorporate wildlife or animals in some way. If you want to pass you should attend lecture because she shares lots of information during lecture and goes into great detail. Exams are a bit long and difficult for the amount of time you have for completion
Exams make up your entire grade. If you want to pass, you need to put in an absurd amount of time; way more than the 1 or 2 credit hours you're getting may suggest. She often goes on tangents, but she is just passionate about what she teaches. Online materials were largely unhelpful, and if you don't go to class you WILL NOT pass this class.
Goes off topic a lot and barely any information provided in slides. Material on exams that is not included in slides.
Bad reviews are coming from people who have no interest in studying, I could say a hundred good things about this professor/course. - Show up to class - you'll learn better (SI is helpful too) - STUDY and take A LOT of notes - She CARES - Lectures are fun - Not many grades are taken so be aware of that when thinking about exams (there are 3)
HORRIBLE!!!!!!!! if you can have a different teacher DO IT! You'll understand the material going into the exam but her questions are the most confusing thing ever. no matter how much you prepare for it you won't do well unless you're an excellent test taker: news flash, you aren't. please don't take her. you'll cry everyday.
although my grade may not reflect it i really loved professor mammone, if you put the time in to study and prepare for her exams you will do well.
If you are already knowledgable and passionate about biology, Professor Mammon's is for you. Otherwise, she is terrible at explaining and is rude. She yells at students a lot for not understanding. If you are looking for an entry level course to knock out your science credit, do not take this class.
gave you all the info u needed to know, did test reviews. did audio online friday lectures, was honest and made bios interesting
Her lectures were pretty good and she always reminded you when assignments or tests were coming up.
she was honestly my favorite professor from this semester, she is very funny, and while she comes off as rude on occasion, she means well. don't skip class, the slideshows don't make sense if you don't attend class, there is also only class M,W and an online lecture on Fridays which i enjoyed. there aren't many grades other than exams so study
Pretty alright but annoying voice.
Was not nice but knew what she was talking about
The semester I had her, everything was going wrong for the poor woman from medical issues to electronic issues, it just wasn't her semester. She pushed through though and I thoroughly enjoyed her lectures. Exams are easy with some studying and note taking and she really shows how much she cares about her students!! I had an amazing semester!
A good professor but there wasn't a whole lot of material on the lecture slides it was mainly a lot of pictures. The information on the study guides, was not entirely helpful on exams either, it felt like it didn't correlate.
Prof Mammone is always responding to emails super quick, always reaching out a helping hand. She went thru alot the fall semester 2023 and was ALWAYS there for her students. the slides dont have much info but she talks about everything on the tests in class, super helpful study guides, no homework. i miss her
Attendance is necessary for success in this course. If you are willing to pay attention in lectures and study than I would recommend but she can be a little daunting.
The only people who should take this course are those who are very good at biology. There isn't a lot of information on the lecture slides it's mainly pictures. She also adds information that you do not need to know which can be confusing and things on the study guide aren't on the exams.
I loved Prof Mammone! She is really funny and was happy to re-explain when someone didn't understand something. The semester I had her, everything bad was happening to her but she still brought her best to class and taught us extremely well. She has great study guides for every chapter and every exam. You'll need to go to every class to do well!!!
You MUST take good notes and pay attention during lectures. If you don't do so you will have a very hard time in this course. Very interesting topics, but lots of information to remember
The supplied study guides will be your best friend in this class - if you attend class and study the study guides, you will do well! There is not a lot of information on the PowerPoints, but Prof Mammone is very clear about what is important while lecturing. She does come across as rude, and is not very helpful if you experience an illness.
I loved her for my BIOS 1030 class
She is a kind person, loves birds. You have lectures 3 times a week. You have online quizzes about every month. TopHat during lectures. Exams are hard unless you study and take good notes.
Dr. Mammone is super nice. Her course is easy if you attend class, take some notes, and look at the study guides. The grading is mostly based on the three exams and a few quizzes. I learned a lot from her class and would definitely recommend her for Human Biology.
Her classes are all lectures and notes, if you miss class and have no one to give you the notes, you will fail. She would go off track a lot and is hard to follow. Her lectures were very hard to follow at times and she expected you to pretty much already know the material.
Please don't teach this class anymore. It is one of the easiest classes to learn, but Mammone made it so difficult to understand anything. She is mean, reads through lectures at the speed of light and grades exams with a sword instead of a pen. Please be more kind :)
Karen pretends to be a dietitian and uses a lot of harmful language around eating/food. She pushes many of her own beliefs onto you and makes you feel bad about your lifestyle. The tests are quite unfair. The majority of the class did not perform well, and over and over again, the class averages are always a C which is not normal.Horrible lectures.
Dr. Mammone is a solid professor who cares about what she teaches and wants to see her students succeed. If you go to class, write down notes, complete the study guides, and review the PowerPoints, you'll get an A.
Professor Mammone is very straightforward and tells you everything you need to know to do well in the class. As long as you go to class regularly and prepare well for her exams, then you will do just fine in the class. While the class may be challenging if biology isn't your thing, she gives great lectures and is willing to help if needed.
You can tell that she cares a lot about the material and wants everyone to do their best. She does go off topic during lectures, which was annoying and can often push harmful ideas about food and lifestyle choices. Definitely go to class because the lectures are hard to get information and notes from if you are not there.
Karen is a very knowledgeable professor and her online class was very easy. Jeremy Fuller, the TA, gives the worst feedback I've ever gotten in my 5 years of college. I'd like to say I came out the other side of this class smarter, but after reading Jeremy's feedback I discovered 3/4 of my brain missing and I can no longer attend OU.
Prof Mammone is an amazing professor who is passionate about what she teaches. I took this class online over the summer, and I learned a lot without being stressed. There are 3 open note exams and 5 simple assignments with a few lectures to watch every week. She creates very detailed lectures that I enjoy listening to. Highly recommend!
She is very nice but she talks fast during her lectures. I recommend taking notes over the slides she has posted before class so you don't miss anything. She says in the beginning of the semester to take detailed notes and she is not lying. Detailed notes and studying are a must for her class.
Professor Mammone is a good teacher and this course was interesting! It is true that she has strong opinions on certain topics, but she is not forcing any kind of lifestyle on people. As long as you study and use the provided study guides there is not a ton of work and it is not difficult.
I highly recommend professor Mammone. She is very passionate about her teaching. All lectures are posted on Canvas which is very helpful when studying! Also, attendance points count as extra credit. This class is very lecture heavy with few discussions.
Best professor ever, I would have her teach all my bio classes if possible. Come to class, pay attention, and take notes!!! You will get a high grade if you do! She cares about your education and wants you to succeed so if you get confused, just ask questions!!! she is very professional but also caring!
