Interesting class
Avoids Questions that go against her personal ideals
Boring.
very informative structured lectures; a challenging yet interesting class
Very good. Clear lectures. Easy tests.
I to this day can not even stand loooking at her. She contradicted herself all the time. loved to talk about sex, and was so irritating about telling people to shut up and listen to her all the time. GET THE CLUE KAREN NO ONE WANTS TO!
She brought ideas and ways of thinking to my attention that I probably would never have discovered. She really loves the subject.
She is great teacher! Very professional and well prepared. Students must study hard, but you will learn a lot!
She's great teacher and explain things very well and you do not really read a book to get an A in the class.
I took Ms. Markley for Anthropology 107 “The History of Magic” (It met once a week on Monday nights). I was amazed at how she made this interesting subject so completely bland. She lectures for about an hour, sometimes using the overhead. Her lectures hav
Interesting class & instructor. Assignments, group work, & tests can be difficult, but if you pay attention, do the reading, & apply yourself, it isn't too bad. She seems to know & love the subject very well. Lectures are usually interesting.
Markley is an excellent teacher, she loves the subject and is always willing to give her time to students interested in it or struggling with it.
Loved the class, made a boring subject as interesting as possible. Takes attendance every week and will drop you! Tests are easy as long as you study your notes. As long as you go to class and take notes its a breeze, dont really need to read book
I got a B in the class and swear to god got D's and F's on the exams. She gives lots of extra credit and she does care a great deal about her students and will help them out if they need help. She's really cooL! TAKE HER CLASS!!
Easy class!!There are not tests, just 3 quizzes and the final is a take home which consists of writing 4 essays(1 page each).Homework was a no brainer, just write a couple of paragraphs on the reading assignments & she keeps the class to the last minute:(
Dude, for an Anthropology teacher, she was pretty cool. I took Anthro for the summer, studied w/ some friends i made in class A LOT and still only got a C. I am a horrible test taker but for all the effort I put in shows how she IS a little challenging. Her teaching methods are just average.
I hated science stuff before I took her. she was a great teacher. take her, shes great!
Good teacher makes it fun to learn this stuff. It is however a hard class. She is a very nice teacher however the subject matter is rather difficult. But she is helpful in giving you extra help. You have to study to pass this class.
3x5 card asking a question or thought about the week's reading, 4 page take home final on your own thoughts. Showed videos, had group discussions and lectured. Easy and really nice. She'll help you however she can.
She is a nice lady and can be interesting but I wouldn't take this class with her again. The exams were vague and that is the most important aspect. She is a great person dont get me wrong but I trie really hard and got a C. Tutor and all. Not really recommended.
may sound fun but its boring boring boring. dont do it. taking this class should be against the law but i still got an A. The class is easy just BORING. not worth all those precious hours of your life
Very understanding teacher, nice, will help, hardly any homework except for reports.
Took Biological Anth. with her one semester and liked her class so much I took another Anth. class with her the next. She is brilliant and thorough in each of her subjects. Really knows what she is talking about. Never been big on science, but taking her c
I took Markley's Physical and Cultural Anthro classes. She does a lot of group stuff which I wasn't too into, but the workload is easy and her lectures are really interesting. She knows her stuff really well and she is a really neat lady to talk to outside of the classroom.
Decided to change my major after taking her Cultural Anth Class-Really informative and knowledgeable-Interesting class with just the right balance of movies, assignments, and lecture
karen markley was a very organized and easy to understand professer with very engaging topics for her readings. in her anthro of magic class she has no tests and relys soley on projects and homework which is a plus. her physical anthro class was more well rounded with small quizes and some homework.
Awesome teacher. She really knows her stuff and we had good discussions in class. It's easy if you do the assigned readings. Taking the lab at the same time helps. She's the anthro department head and does the anthro club. She's cool to hang out with too. 3 exams, some quizzes, and homework. No paper. Some bio background helpful.
Karen inspired me to be an anthro major because she was so passionate. I took her for three different classes, and she made them all fun. I love the fact that she didn't have any kind of research paper or essay.
Hard class, test are confusing, read the book and try to pay attention because she go all out with her presenation. She'll jump to this topic to the next. Quizzes are as hard as her test. Extra credit is difficult to achieved beczu you have to visit museum and write about it. Take the lab if you can.start out with 40 end w/ 15 people
in my opinion she wasnt that great her test were supper confusing!
She's very clear. There were no tests in my class, Just projects. It was alot of fun, but her class constantly put me to sleep, maybe it was just the time a-day. Was absent alot and Still got a B.
Attendance isn't mandatory however you want to be there for lecture notes and to turn in "main idea reviews" which are really easy. The tests are what are hard... but she does give you the essay questions before hand plus a study guide in your notes packet! This teacher actually used the entire textbook too. And it's interesting to boot!
Very fun and exciting class. Projects are fun and interesting. Tests are easy lets you use a full sheet of paper for notes on test days. Drops your lowest test and project scores. Really recommend her if interested in anthropology!
Bombin' class, I had the best time. You've got to take her class it's awesome.
She is the worst. I am taking an online class, which I have done before, and it is so confusing. There way too many areas of the site where you have to look for announcements, etc. Not only do you have weekly research assignments, she gives you quizzes and additional required exercise assignments. And no breaks on the assign. when there is a tes
I'm taking the class online, and hating it. There are so many areas that you have to look for notes, test, etc etc. Her test are very vague. You don't get enough time to completes them and you can't go back to look at your answers. There isn't a heavy workload, but her assisgments didn't help me with the tests.
I am taking her class online and am also hating it. Her quiz was ridiculous. Random order and you could tell that she wrote them herself and seems to be a teacher that tries to stump her students. All of her assignments are ridiculously long and does not make this subject fun at all.
This teacher is terrible. I am taking her online class & hate it. She TRIES to make you miss answers on the test & makes you read her notes on top of reading the text which says virtually the same thing. Her tests are random & jump all over the place. She tries to throw you a bone with extra credit, but it helps little to none. Awful awful awful!
She was ambiguous and vague in her lectures, notes and her responses provide little assistance. Tests and Quiz questions were tricky and were hard to understand. She lacks the technical ability to manipulate webct. Poorly organized, assignments and material were not clearly explained. Basically, KEEP AWAY from her online courses.
best teacher i ever had!!!!
I took her online class, and it was the hardest online class I have ever taken! Her tests are so specific and her notes or lectures are completely vague. there is not a lot of assignments involved, but the few that you do have to do are USELESS! don't take her online, especially the half session.
I took her online class this Fall and learned A LOT! If you are taking your education seriously, she is a wonderful teacher. This class is not for those who try to pass classes without putting in any effort. I got an A, but I EARNED it.
I've taken online classes and passed before with As. I had to bust my behind in her class just to get a C. I took Int Spanish and got an A, that wasn't easy. I read for this class, did my work, etc. and didn't get anything above a C on exams. The class was poorly structured. It was by the worst online class I have taken. Do not take this woman.
Great teacher. Make sure you come to class. Reading helps to remember and understand lectures. Really enjoyed class.
Excellent class. Totally changed my major because of this class. Books are interesting, great films and very useful homework projects. Not a hard class. Take her for all your FJC anthro classes!
Prof. Markley takes her personal opinion and disguises it as fact. She teaches you a little bit about cultural anthropology, but most of the class is dedicated to her promoting her own viewpoints and social causes. Also, the Main Idea Reviews were completely useless as a learning tool. Would not recommend this course to anyone.
I took this class online and got an A. I found it relatively easy. Just stay on top of the syllabus and do the reading. I didn't think the class was poorly structured at all... quite the opposite. Just don't expect it to be really easy just because it's an online course.
I really liked her as a teacher. She's interesting and knows what she's talking about. Uses the text book a lot and there is homeowork but she offers a lot of extra credit too.I thought tests were somewhat hard/ticky but i still passed. Drops lowest quiz score
Great teacher. VERY interesting class. A lot of fun. Will make you work and learn . . .but that's the point isn't it. Very good teacher and keeps you interested. Knows what she's talking about. You will want to take her again. I loved this class.
Wonderful teacher. You have to read and study (you are in college people, this shouldn't be a shocker). You will learn a lot and easily get an A if you pay attention to the material. I took 2 of her classes and wish i had an excuse to take another. ANTH101 online is a piece of cake if you learn the material (read the book).
Highly highly recommend ANTH107, covers GE requirements and multicultural requirement. Very interesting and fun class. You have to read the book (not difficult). The book is tiny and very cheap. You must be an open minded person to appreciate and learn in this class. Awesome class. Awesome teacher..
Waaaay cool teacher!! Pretty easy A, definitely gotta study but assignments were fast and easy. Tests were mostly off her notes which I loved cuz her notes were fun and non exhausting. I didnt feel like I was bugging her when I needed help and emailed her cuz she always put smiley faces. TAKE HER YALL!
Took her online class and was pretty easy if you read and do the work. Very helpful if you have any questions. The book is very easy to read and follow. I suggest reading the chapters once or twice before tests. It makes it easier for you to answer questions in the amount of time given. Some complained the time was not enough. Gives extra credit :)
I was really excited to take this class but I wish I had not. 2 of the main projects are posters and the other is performing or writing about a ritual. She has quizzes every week at the beg. of class till almost the end of the semester.
A lot of hmwrk but its easy and interesting, quizzes are easy, tests can be hard if you dont read or pay attention. She is very approachable and knows her stuff!
A lot of random homework assignments, 4 quizzes, 3 exams. A lot of studying and reading in this class. If you work hard you can pass this class. I don't care much for Markley. I personally thought lecture was useless. She really expects a lot from her students.
Took her Online Class for Physical Anthropology. If you read the text book and her notes, she makes the class very easy for you. There is a total of 4 Quizes (one is dropped), very easy weekly assignments, and three exams. If you read, and don't fall behind, this class should be fairly easy and interesting.
I really like Cultural Anthropology, however when I took the class I realized the class was something completely different than what I thought. She was extremely biase & teaches through her own personal lens. She says "she won't be biased" but definately bashed alot of different subjects. I really didn't like this class because of the Professor.
Considering the course was not religious, as Ms. Markley herself stated, I was concerned when she expressed inaccurate views on certain religions to make points about evolution.
Lots of assignments and lots of reading. She seems somewhat biased but it didn't bother me, though she's super nice. This class can be interesting and even fun at times but it is not an easy class by any means. You have to actually put in the work and study time if you want to get a decent grade. Hard to go to class some days.
Dr. M is brilliant, but naggs so much against Christian beliefs that it is distracting. Evolution stands strong enough on its own. After that very good teacher, willing to help during office hours, is more approachable than she looks, and made the subject exciting. Lots of reading, and some of the homework was confusing.
I was a little intimidated by her at first, honestly. She's very passionate and well informed about what's currently going on in the anthro world. As the class progressed, I really appreciated how passionate she was; it made the class really interesting. There was a lot of easy hw and tests are pretty easy if you study off of the notes packet.
I do not recommend the online version of her biological anthropology class. Her test are ridiculously hard.
I took her online Biological anthropology class. The way she runs the class is very organized and made it easy to understand the material. She has a book she uses along with her notes and a kind of fill in the blank study guide packet. She's very clear with her assignments and is extremely helpful. I can't wait to see what other classes she teaches!
Took Online ANTH 101, very organized, opportunity for extra credit, dropped lowest quiz grade. Didn't purchase study guide & had 0 interest in the course prior to taking it (was really worried about affect on my GPA, not into science) however she makes the material interesting & easy to follow. HIGHLY RECOMMEND taking her course. Wish I took lab.
I took this class online and very glad I did. Prof Markley is highly organized and makes the class very interesting. The workload is NOT hard. All you have to do is turn in all the assignments, which she basically gives you the answers for, do good on the tests and quiz and you have yourself an A. I highly recommend, she is an excellent teacher
She knows a lot about this subject and is very passionate about it. pay attention to her lectures take good notes and you will do great on the quizzes and exams. not too many homework assignments. i reccomend her, the class was enjoyable, and she is a great teacher.
Shes a very smart and dedicated teacher very passionate about what she does...she love scarfs lol and I took her honors course and it wasnt as hard as i thought it would be
Homework everyday, and reading but its not too hard or time consuming. Its generally a difficult class but I still passed with a B by doing all the hw. She's a really kind teacher and during her office hours, she went over the questions I missed on the exam.
She is an awesome an dedicated teacher. I learned a lot from her and although there is hw everyday, it's super easy and obviously will help you w/ the tests! I never dreaded going to her class. Her quizzes/tests=easy. As long as you read/pay attention!
She is a good teacher but if you want to get a good grade you must read, participate, do hw, and go to lecture. It's not a "fun" class. If you don't have the time to read about a chapter or two a weekend and the time to do small article responses don't take the class.
I took her class during Summer '11. Not an EASY A - but if you do all the work and actually read/study, you'll pass no problem. This is a college level class thus the college level work load. Her lectures are interesting, she herself is really interesting. I surprisingly learned a lot and still to this day am annoyed when apes are called monkeys.
took her for anthro 102, cultural anthropology. she is very opinionated and makes sure her students agree. she is very interesting. there are three tests, lots of easy hw and three or four quizzes. book was required. go to class . not an easy a.
I took Markely for 101 and Celtic culture which I believe is 211. For 101 I took her course online, and it was great. Her notes really help you and come in handy on the test. As far as 211 goes, good luck. The course is fun and interesting, however the material is very broad and uncertain. The subject is heavily debated. Which is why it's unclear.
I loved the idea of this class, and then i started reading the text. the lectures she gives are informative and based on the text. Prof. markley loves what she teaches so that helps make it interesting. the class is easy to pass if you do your work and study for tests. i learned A LOT in this class that i will probably never forget.
She lectures alongside a PowerPoint presentation. Notes are taken based on an outline that she created. Must keep up with the assigned reading, or else the quizzes and exams will be difficult. As she lectures, she really encourages everyone to participate in class discussions. Overall, her class was very interesting.
Although I did end up withdrawing from the class, She is an extremely good teacher. She really knows what she is talking about and answers questions clearly. She is SO passionate about her job and her enthusiasm really helped me enjoy the class a lot. A lot of work, not an easy A, but if you are willing to put in the time, then you're set.
She is a good prof and is very good about getting back to you in response to questions. You definitely have to do the reading and study but she does everything she can to make it easy/enjoyable. Good class!
The class got boring at times but overall it was very interesting and fun. As long as you do the assigned reading, you'll be fine. She was super helpful and always explained exactly what she expected of students.
This professor definitely knows how to run an online class efficiently. She always responds back to student answers very quickly. There is a lot of reading involved, and if you put in the effort, you will learn so much from her. I always thought science was boring and difficult, but everything makes so much sense to me now. I recommend her.
She is one of the best online teachers i have ever had. She is very efficient at managing the class and responds to questions very quickly. She also offers quite a bit of extra credit and the assignments are pretty straightforward. Her notes really help!
Markley made class very interesting. Connects topics to current events/issues. She likes discussion, so come prepared and participate! EXTREMELY clear on how the course works. Follow the syllabus and you should be fine.
GREAT class! - über-organized (vital for O/L) - thoughtfully designed for student success - encourages questions and provides super-quick response times - 4 weeks is too quick - take it in Fall/Spring so you can more fully enjoy it
Assignments and discussion boards are straightforward, exams are okay (I recommend reading the book/powerpoints thoroughly and filling out the packets), quizzes are easy (4, 1 is dropped), overall pretty easy. As far as the professor goes, she's nice and replies to e-mails quickly.
Go to class and sit through interesting lectures and videos. It's very easy to pass just read the articles and do the homework which is not hard at all. Very nice and willing to work with you if you need extra help. You read a lot but it's all on the tests so it's easy AB if you JUST READ! I love her as a professor and her subject! I reccomend her
hardest online course ever. She was very hard to get help from and her most common advice was "look at the syllabus" - she does not budge on late assignments or computer errors you can encounter in an online course. Test questions are worded difficultly so if you're not paying attention you could miss a lot just based on that. Good luck if you dare
I did not like the class at all it was boring and lectures sucked. and you have one project thats worth quite a bit of points.
I recommend you take this course with a different professor or take it online. When you have questions, she will never respond. Her advice is "if you need help, re-read the syllabus." She agreed to letting me retake my exam. She asked me when I can retake it. I replied and she never got back to me. I emailed her 3x after & I never got a response.
Karen is a remarkable professor. She's very intelligent and passionate about her field. Yes, there is quite a bit of work outside her class, but it's all very relevant to helping you think critically. She's SO organized, and prepares you really well for the tests. As long as you do what she says you need to do to pass, YOU WILL! I loved her class.
I really enjoyed this class! It was extremely insightful and so was the professor. Markley's directions can be a bit confusing and vague but if you ask for help w/ time during her office hours then she will provide that help. There is a good amount of hw but if you do it then you will pass this class. There is a big project so START EARLY ON THAT!
Celtic Cultures was the class I had with Karen. She's really into the subject and can talk ad nauseam about it. She shows clips of films and gives handouts. You do have to read the books, although her lectures cover most of it. She uses PowerPoint for those. The final project was a poster, which was weird to me. Tests are easy if you take notes.
It works out to be a quiz or test a week. Each quiz is on one chapter while each test is three or four. There are times you have to write posts about an article or video, but they aren't that difficult if you take the time to view them. As long as you at least skim read you will pass this class. If you don't even look at the book you will fail.
Professor Markley is highly informed in this subject and gives great lectures. You meet once a week, so attendance is mandatory. Buy the book and read the articles thoroughly. (They're interesting!) Meet with someone to further discuss the articles, and you'll be fine. The notes packet is also important. Her exams are straightforward. HW is easy.
Defo one of the most difficult classes ive taken online ever. So much reading weekly. Struggling to get a C when i normally get mostly As and Bs.
I took Professor Markley for Physical Anthropology because last semester I took her Magic, Witchcraft and Religion class and loved it. I like how organized she is. You will read the whole text book, some side articles, watch videos and fill out pages of note packet questions. If you do all of these things, you'll have no problem getting and A.
Pretty solid professor. I'm not an Anthropology guy but still passed with a B. She is fair, responds quickly, & tries to ensure you take something away from the class. You definitely need to read the book to be successful in her online class. Assignments are due weekly & you always know what to expect. Makes working and school manageable.
Markley's class was definitely interesting. She engaged in discussion, the tests and quizzes were not that hard (given that you put some effort into studying) and is generally caring towards the success of her students. In hindsight, I would definitely say put more effort into doing the questions packet because they definitely help towards the test
Markley is a pretty cool professor! She's really nice! Read the chapter before class or you'll be lost because she skims through it fast. She gives out HW but it helps you understand the lesson better. Gives 4 quizzes and 3 exams. She has article reviews but they're easy to do. She provides a notes packet which she uses as our study guide as well.
If you are not an Anthropology major I suggest NEVER to take this class. Karen Markley expects you to be an anthropologist and know every single part of the book, ppt, notes of pages she provides you. The amount of work is extremely unrealistic for the time given to you. I've become depressed taking this class, given I'm an A student. Unforgiving.
Professor Markley is one of the best professors I've ever had. No matter which anthropology class you take she makes learning fun. She loves classroom participation. Her poster project is a great way to show your individuality and creativity. I'm not an anthropology major but I've taken two of her classes and I'm looking forward to the 3rd.
Took Anth 101 online , it was a really great class. Yes, you will have to read, and do the packets, and all the homework. But if you do all of this you will get a easy B. Tests are not hard if you have done all of the prep work.
This is the 3rd anth class I have taken by Professor Markley and I love how organized the classes are. Her Celtic cultures class was really interesting. She gives a lot of reading assignments but her note packet really helps with picking out the important parts. Her tests are mostly on lecture material so attendance is crucial!
Prof. Markley was one of the best professors I've had. She gives great lectures that involves the class to give their opinions, which makes class lectures very interesting. Not a boring class. Tons of reading for homework but readings are all very interesting. She gives a good amount of extra credit and overall, she's understanding and sweet.
I ended with an A (92%) without the textbook. 2 points of extra credit possible every week; they're easy, do them cause they will help you. Lots of reading and writing but it's easy work. Her exams are tricky, I never got above an 83% on them. Save the answers from her quizzes, they're used on exams. Final has three essay questions, again, easy.
This class is so much more interesting than you think it will be. Definitely do the reading before class, but lectures themselves are pretty fun. She seems strict but as long as you don't use your phone during class and participate she will help you pass. The assignments are really easy to follow and you will know your grade all semester.
Textbook is needed despite other people stating otherwise. Really fun class. Be prepared to read, I don't know how others got by without the textbook (I guess just luck since her tests are multiple choice. She lays out the class, it's hard not to get an A as long as you do your work. Everything is pretty straightforward.
I loved taking her online. She responds quickly and will do what she can to help. I believe there were 8 assignments (but only 6 are graded), 7? quizzes (drops one), a few discussions, extra credit options, and for sure A LOT of reading. this class was really interesting but time consuming. If you take her online make sure to set a schedule!
I have never been in a class that flows so perfectly and it's clear to tell the professor really cares about the subject. There's a lot of homework but you can drop 4. The lectures are long but she makes them interesting and explains everything really well. The notes packet is unorganized but it helps a lot. Highly recommend!
Took Anthropology of Religion, Witchcraft and Magic.... first of all it is nothing like what you would think. Its incredibly dense and not about what i expected. We study more of the people and not of the actual religion and witchcraft part of it. There is so much work! So much reading, and she expects you to act and think like an anthropologist.
This was my second time to take her class. She expects you to know that book that you are ready and understand the class as well. When you are just the student and we aren't perfected at all! Don't take her class.
I took her online Anth101 class and it's harder than most of my other classes. If you log in twice a week and study efficiently (I used quizlet and flashcards), you should be able to get an A. I currently have a 90.4 and I might get a B after the final, but I learned a lot with the ted talks. They were very intriguing to watch.
Assignments are time consuming and quizzes/tests you must know your anthropology in order to pass as they are tricky. Reading the textbook and slides are a must!!
This class is NOT easy. There is an assignment due every class BUT they are extremely helpful for the exams. The assignments are in the notebook that is mandatory to buy and that is your study guide. So as long as you keep up with the homework and study that, you will do fine. She is passionate about anthro and I enjoyed the class a lot!
If you want an easy A, this is not the class for you. You will have to work for it. She gives quizzes/exams that requires you to read the textbook. Assignments are time consuming and no bs-ing. Id only recommend this class to anthropology majors.
I would recommend this class for anthropology majors because shes pretty strict with her grading criteria and has a lot work that has to be done! I do really like that in this class you learn a lot of interesting topics. Her test are actually pretty hard and kind of awkward. A lot of the questions are the same, but require a different answer.
I'm psychology major, but I feel like taking this class has completely helped me in understanding psychology much more and the world around me. This is definitely not an easy class. I took the online class. There's tons of homework each week, lots of readings, so you'll have to really be on top of it all. Overall, I really enjoyed the class though
Professor Markley really loves anthropology and will be able to make you interested and invested into the subject. She does great lectures that correspond with notes and while there is somewhat a lot of homework, it definitely helps you understand anthropology.
Easy A class, quizzes and exams can be found online, and assignments require very little effort. The textbook will be referenced a few times for assignments, but there is a free pdf available, I don't recommend buying it. Take this class if you need it for a requirement! It's an easy class to do well in.
The title of this class is more interesting than the class itself. You get a useless packet that you never have to bother to touch. During class discussions if you don't say what she wants you to say she will jump at you right away. While the class is easy the prof manages to make the subject boring. Don't bother with this if you are curious.
She is very communicative and I personally feel like if you do not communicate with her then you will struggle. She is very understanding of life getting in the way, and will try to work with you to the best of her abilities. There is a lot of group work, and reading, she is very organized and is dedicated to your for success as a student.
Out of the last 3 years of school this has been the hardest class, certainly didn't help I took it during summer. Professor provides study guides and powerpoints but there is SO MUCH READING. Very interesting class and you'll learn a great deal of information. Stick with this course during the 16 week schedule!
You can tell Markley is very passionate about Anthropology. She does provide you with powerpoints and study guides to help you through each chapter, but you must read every link in the PowerPoint. You are tested on everything she gives you. Her quizzes were pretty easy; however, her exams were more difficult.
Rubric explicitly states to synthesize assigned work, omits penalty citing outside sources. Lost -8% (92%) on HW asgmt late 10%. Cited Anthro journal to avoid plagiarism. Told I wasn't writing "in my own words" (subjective) denoting lacks originality or cheating, K.M. didn't expound in email - reiterated generalities. Gifted student, BLM.
She is a tough grader for sure. However, if you take you time to understand the material then you will be more successful. The assignments given are already pretty hard and the tests are TOUGH. Studying and putting time into this class is essential. You will not pass if you do not put all your effort into it.
Professor Markley is one of the best anthropology professors I have had at Fullerton College. Her classes are inspirational and fascinating. Her class is organized and easy to follow, so as long you do the work you will earn an A.
I really enjoyed taking Prof. Markleys class and I found the work to be more enjoyable than it was difficult. Some weeks there was a significant amount of material to read, but overall the class didnt occupy too much of my schedule. Shes very responsive to emails and she hosts optional zoom meetings prior to exams. I highly recommend her class
After being in class for a week or so it was easy to find what I needed to find on canvas, work being posted in the same place every week, and all classwork being in order in the modules. I thought that the powerpoints were well worded and helpful, it made it easier to remember information after going over the textbook by highlighting the key point
Cultural Anthropology Honors does not mean it is harder. It's just tailored to have a small group of students. The expectations of the instructor are high. You must read and understand the material; memorization won't do you any good as she tests your critical thinking skills. It important that you ask questions and come prepared for class.
Took this class before I found out I didn't actually need it this semester. I'll just say this: This professor is a very tough and strict grader. You are expected to read powerpoint lectures on your own. If you're confused, there's weekly office hours you're "recommended" to go to. Also; the professor disables grade calculation! Have fun with that.
Took last semester. Professor grades incredibly subjectively, which I find inappropriate for an entry level science class. Feedback is only provided if asked for, and shows very little engagement. Competency and mastery of material does not equate to a high grade, must give professor the exact answer they want. Avoid, take Jacobsen.
Out of all the professors Ive had professor Markley has made me feel the least heard. Ive messaged her for help multiple times and I was referred to a message she sent out. She is a VERY strict grader. Lets just say this past year I received all As, this is my first class Ive failed. She doesnt teach, she just grades.
Over the course of my semester, this class was by far the easiest to navigate, clear on grading criteria, and truly set up for student success. Professor Markley was easily reachable if I had any questions and gave great feedback. this was not the same across all of my courses. I will never forget the impact this course had on my day to day life.
I would have to say that this was a very difficult class for me and I worked very hard to get the grade I did. She does ask a lot from you, she is a strict grader, and her feedback condescending and honestly can put you down. However, she does care about you and I feel like she would be better in-person than online. She is a solid choice in-person
Lots of quizzes that are basically free points, but no points for hw. Discussion posts are easy to do but she will take points off for small mistakes. exams are half of the grade but she gives the written portion out ahead for you to prepare. Learn through using powerpoint and a pdf of the book. Interesting but somewhat difficult.
I would highly suggest not taking this professor. Never gives any type of helpful feedback . You either pass or completely fail on all discussions and written exams. highly suggest taking anyone else!
HARD DISCUSSION GRADER... If you don't fully understand the course you will not understand the quizzes. They are in her own words and every answer will sound exactly the same. Lots of reading and expect to read everything before class ahead of time because she will ask you to talk about it in class. Would not take again.
Hybrid class. Discussion posts make up a majority of the grade and are graded tough, but gets much easier later during the semester. Class had no lecture and was more seminar style, but attendance required. All quizzes/exams are done online and were fairly easy. Usually either a post/quiz or both weekly, with 3 exams for the semester.
Tough discussion post grader, but overall an easy class.
Follow her questions and answer them directly. Read the chapters but use the Questions as a Study Guide, otherwise the reading gets to be too time consuming. If you are a good writer, she will think you cheated so prepare to be able to back up all of your work. If you can drop... drop, the amount of work I put in for a B should have been an A.
Starts out with a normal 80 question multi-choice test which is fine.THEN along with that you will write four short essays about topics of her choice which add up to 160 points. The final four are double the amount you will write throughout the entire class. Also does have a pretty obvious political bias, but most do. And a lot of reading, too much
Doesnt give feedback via email. office hours only, so I hope you dont have a job. some of us chose online courses to have flexibility in our schedules. super condescending. the articles she chooses are boring. I felt the course material would have been really interesting if taught by another professor. Harshly and unpredictable in grading
Professor Markley drains the joy out of learning. I just took ANTH101 for credit, not to pursue an anthropological profession. She is extremely finicky when it comes to grading and is over excessively controlling meanwhile the directions for her assignments are unclear. Let's just say, Professor Karen Markley really lives up to her name.
Professor Markley drains the joy out of learning. I only took ANTH101 or credit, not so that I can pursue an Anthropological career. She's overall very finicky and a tough grader. She's excessively controlling meanwhile the instructions for the assignments are unclear and vague. Let's just say she lives up to her name.
If you want this class for transfer credits, don't take it. Professor expects you to be pursuing Anthropology Major. It is a 3-unit course but has more exams and quizzes than 4-unit courses.
Professor Markley was a wonderful professor! I was very anxious taking this course prior to the Summer semester because it was only 5 weeks long. I can say that I was pleasantly surprised to see it was very manageable! Just read the materials and videos she assigns you in each weekly tab you will succeed in this course.
Professor Markley is knowledgable but tough. Discussions are heavily weighted (40 points) and if you don't answer them (or the test questions) the way she wants you to, you will fail. I spent 2 hours on one discussion and earned 1 point. One! Who does that? Expect to do a lot of reading and writing in her class. I don't recommend this teacher.
She grades VERY HARSHLY. She herself is very passionate about anthropology but not everyone is and she expects you to be. You can go to the writing department to help you out with your post essay discussion and still give you a low grade? She gave a low grade on my introduction to the class when I had followed each rule? Take another professor.
If you want to enjoy anthropology, do not take her. She ruined my grades by expecting us as good writers for all of her discussions/essays. You will never get full grades for all of her assignments.
Like all the other posts, her discussion posts/essays are the worst!!! She recommends the writing center, but they can even get a good grade from her. Take another professor!! You would think this course was simple, but it took too much time for a GE. I do not recommend her!
DO NOT take this professor. She cares about the wrong things while grading and will take more than half credit off if so much as a single citation is messed up. The rubrics are confusing and convoluted, making it impossible to follow the requirements. She is not a good intro professor.
Unfair grader. Took off points claiming that I missed key information in a discussion post. When I emailed her to point out that I did in fact state that information, she refused to adjust my grade. A joke of a teacher with an overblown ego. You teach at a community college, babe. Sit down.
Professor Markley's ANTH101 class is challenging, with heavy emphasis on discussions and essays. While the lectures and textbook are helpful, the grading can be subjective. I found Unstuck AI and ChatGPT useful for preparing, but the workload is substantial. Overall, the class requires dedication.
Literally uses power points as lectures. Not everyone's cup of tea to be reading 20+ sides jam packed with information, but to each their own. Lots, and lots of reading. Can't stress that enough. Some content was really interesting, but her questions for both exams and essays can be very complicated to answer. Very particular with grading.
Professor Karen certainly lives up to her reputation. Improper citation results in loss of half points. To recover points, students have to visit HER during office hours. Every other week, there was a "discussion board post" which was a full essay. There was an exam and a essay due every three weeks. The most challenging class I've ever taken.
This was an amazing course and she made it very fun and engaging. She gives many opportunities to make up late assignments or get extra points on an assignment you didn't do good on. If you meet with her during office hours like I did, she will help you out so much with assignments and you can get a really food grade.
Lectures and the class time itself is not bad. However, she is a tough tough grader and takes a lot of things personally. She does not budge and is stubborn in everything. Grades are often unfair and if she thinks it doesn't meet her criteria she just gives it a 62.5% no matter what.
RUN AWAY! This is not a 101 class. You will have a hard time with this professor. She assigns posts and essays. to fix your grade. it is during her Zoom hours. Final exams are divided into 2 parts: Part 1 is 2 questions that are Essays, and you have 1 hour to complete them. TOUGH Grader; NO extra credit is even provided. She's rude
Condescending, unwilling to help students, unwilling to sacrifice her ego for the success of her students. Do not take. Unfair grader, will not allow any information that doesn't come out of her writing. Do not recommend.
Came into this class with an open mind "yeah this cant be that bad" I was later shredded to pieces mainly from essay posts that were toughly graded as if it was meant to be some Shakespearean masterpiece. This Professor is awful when it comes to grading essays having unclear instructions and high standards, At least I don't get to see them.
She is a TOUGH grader with essays. Please do not take this course if you do not have a whole day where you can go over ever little detail to maybe get a passing grade on your essays. If you do not go to her office hours she will not help you with anything because you're not going the extra mile for her class.
