She is very nice, but being nice doesn't make you a good teacher. Her classes were unorganized, and sometimes very pointless. I never really learned much with her. I thought he class was a waste of my time and money.
I agree, she's nice and all but her class was unorganized, unclear, there was no apparent point. We watched movies and students presented yet she expected us to learn 50 some theorists and the tests covered info. we hadn't discussed.
Wow. What a waste of a class. She simply doesn't TEACH anything. If you want to learn anything at all, read your book. Better yet, take a different professor. If you want to watch movies and occassionally copy notes off her overheads, sign up!
it's like she puts herself to sleep in the lecture. this is a easy class if you can manage to pay attention, don't bother buying the books. if you actually want to learn, find another prof...
boring. She reads word for word out of the book. Tests are fairly easy, all multiple choice ScanTron. Her lectures are the equivalent of reading the book yourself. Don't by the Psychobabble book. She never used it once.
forget the majority of the negative comments below or above. Karen marsh was super nice, and taught an easy class. You could pretty much just go and sit there, write down some comments by her pre-emailed notes, and get an A. If you studied those notes and knew the material on her tests, you obviously learned something. I did
Really boring monotone teacher, class is decently easy, but take someone else if you can. Hardly teaches during class
SOOO BORING!! Sent you the powerpoints and went over them word for word in class. Constantly popped in movies instead of teaching. Biggest waste of time and money. Had less desire to be there than the students
Class is pretty easy but the she is pretty boring. I was interested in Psych before the class but lost interest during it. She doesn't make the class interesting and does really no teaching of her own.
Super boring, bring a pillow and a bottle. Almost not even worth going because you will fall asleep to her ****. Easy class if you can stay awake.
Don't go to class. Get the powerpoints on the internet. All she does is read them word for word anways. She never asks if we have questions. One time, someone yelled one out and she said, literally, "um, i have no idea how to answer that, to be honest". The only reason im passing is because i had the best h.s. psych teacher imaginable.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!! By far the WORST teacher I have ever had in my 4 years of college experience. She is boring, pointless, uninspiring, inefficient, unmotivating. She is the first and only teacher I ever walked out on in mid lecture. Does not know how to work her labtop, structure a power point, work an over head projector or play a video.
She's a very nice person. Unfortunately, I found her class to be very dull, and this class lessened my interest in psychology, which I had as my major going in. She was very monotone and spoke 99% of the lecture from the book. She popped in a movie or two or even three during one class period. Overall, I was a bit disappointed.
Teacher wrote terrible tests with plenty of trick questions. Too lazy some days and would just throw in a movie. Lectures very boring, read straight from her notes.
The class was extremely boring. Phillip Zombardo pretty much taught the class as he was the instructor in all the videos she showed. Nice as a person, but the class is hell.
VERY BORING! Everyday is either her reading word for word from the powerpoints you can view outside of class or her showing 2-3 movies. Very hard to pay attention with her monotone voice. Gives random quizzes every now and then which you get credit for just for being there. Nice person but hard to learn from.
shes very monotone, reads off powerpoints... and makes us watch random movies from the 80's its horrible. she only gives two big tests and the information is scattered. I'd avoid at all costs. really nice lady, horrible teachers
All she did was read straight from the power point and even then it had nothing to do with the class.
Not sure I need to add to the list but this is by far the worst class I have ever had. I have no idea what is going on in class and I attend every one. I would recommend anyone taking a Psych class to check their options for a teacher before Karen. She is a very nice lady though. She is very smart also and knows her psychology.Tough to follow along
Horrible tearcher, please please do not waste your time
oh dear god. positively the biggest waste of time. insanely boring and monotone. i never went to class and got a 93 on the midterm...about to take the final. oh and there's a volunteering component. you have to have 10 hours. which is a bit of a pain when you don't have a car. DONT TAKE HER CLASS IF YOU CAN HELP IT!!
AVOID. Dr. Marsh was unengaging, monotone, boring, scattered, and uninformed. She could barely answer questions and when she didn't feel like teaching, which was often, she would put in an irrelevant boring movie that was 20 years old. 2 exams that did not cover anything taught in class. DO NOT TAKE HER! it will save you much frustration
very very boring, she should not be teaching, only gives a midterm and final, one of the factors that made me switch my major
Never take the class with this teacher. Boring. She keeps talking for two hours and reads her notes. Her slides are useless. Hard exams. A lot of stuff to do, like volunteering, researches, posters, online discussions. Doesn't check her emails. I had to wait two weeks to get an answer from her. It is a challenge to stay awake. Never take this teach
She has a definite interest in Abnormal, it's just a shame she fails to invoke the same in her students. She tries to break up the two hours with in-class assignments using DSMs and case studies, but most of the time she lectures, and it's hard to sit through. She gives two tests, a presentation, online discussions, and in-class assignments.
Taking Marriage and Familes. Class is pretty boring because we listen to the powerpoint presentation one of the days a week and they SUCK. She does play a lot of movies, but some of them are Very interesting. All you have to do is go to class and you should end up with at least a B. Not a very exciting teacher, but not the most boring either.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER SUCKS SO BORING DUMB MOVIES SCREWS U OVER EVERY CHANCE SHE CAN GET- only good thing was easy to go to class hung over cuz u do zero and need to pay attention zero
Horrible class, Worst teacher I have had in my three years at UMD. Reads straight off the slides everyday for the entire semester. Tests are the brutally hard with no curve. Avoid her at all costs.
Well everyone else pretty much covered it. This is probably the worst, most boring, worthless class I have ever had. I still can't believe I wasted $1000 to sit and watch worthless videos and watch Professor Monotone read what is up on the screen. The lecture was more like a hypnotizing class, everyone passed out within the first 5 minutes.
Karen Marsh is the worst teacher that I have encountered in my entire life. She was very misleading with turn in dates for essays and she almost failed me because I missed one because I had to go to my Grandmother's funeral. The school can't get rid of her because she's tenured. IF AT ALL POSSIBLE DON'T TAKE HER!
I can't believe the school is allowing someone like this to be teaching classes! Prof Marsh is absolutely the worst teacher. Avoid her classes at all costs. In her Marriage / Families class, she makes students do a group project on a country that she assigns and all you do is sit and watch group presentations for the rest of the semester! Boring!!!
Very boring. Random information. Monotone. Seems like she tries to screw everyone over with points too. (ex online discussions)
I really liked her even though many didn't like her. She was good in a class that was a smaller class setting and I'm making sure to take a class with her the rest of my college career here.
Horrible! Was extremely difficult to even stay awake for class. Very monotone voice and showed no enthusiam whatsoever. We watched movies for the majority of the time. Tests were pretty hard but i ended up getting a B+ with little effort put in.
Took Human Development and it was a boring class. She reads instead of lectures. Once she talked about Elvis all day. She doesn't really teach anything. If you study you should get an A.
Tests weren't too horrible, she gives a study guide that you fill out from the book and from class, but sometimes questions on the test aren't from the study guide. Notes on power point so that's really nice. She's really monotone and can be really boring. She canceled class a lot from being sick, but it didn't affect anything.
She was the first psyc prof I had; very disappointing. Boring lectures; she reads instead of lectures. Watched movies that were a waste of class time. Shows no enthusiasm, but exams are easy if you study.
this was one of the worst classes i have ever had. she made this class extremely unenjoyable.
I took her Theories of personality class and I really am interested in personality, but this class kinda killed it for me. She gave a study guide for the second test and it didn't cover what was actually on the test, so you spend time studying the wrong thing. I did better on the first test with no study guide.
What a woman. She really stands out. Everyone thinks she's the end of them but shes a big teddy bear standing up there in front of the class... not. Just pay attention to what she says. She's nice enough, I guess. Not much reading, just prints stuff out. Tests weren't bad for me, even tho I was expecting worse. Make friends in class.
Took Abnormal Psych. Just attend class and READ THE BOOK as the lectures are hard to follow and sometimes pointless. Tests are easy if you study. The tests were comprised of an essay that you get a week to complete before the test and around 30 multiple choice questions.
Took her General Psych course. She is unorganized and untimely. She reads off of every single sentence in the book. She is incapable of using technology. She speaks in a very muffled tone which makes her speech incomprehensible.
Videos and powerpoints. Then she slams you with very comprehensive tests. Awful teacher.
She hardly lectures & when she does she reads directly off the power point. You basically spend the 1st half of the semester watching movies (mostly what the midterm is on) She gives very little direction on what to do, especially with your big group presentation. And she sucks at answering direct questions. If you can, try & take someone else...
Pretty easy class if you read the book and take notes. watch lots of movies and power points are boring but not to bad. some in class work too (Marriages & Families)
Her class was a joke. I don't like her as a teacher even if she is a nice lady. She had her teacher assistant grade our group presentation which caused me to get such a low grade. The stuff she lectured about was irrelevant to my overall learning experience and I don't recommend her as a teacher.
She is very quiet even with a mic. Hands out random worksheets for a grade. Shows a lot of movies and uses powerpoint but not a lot of information on the power-points. Information comes from her lectures, textbook and videos.
I was very disappointed with her and this class. Coming into it I was pretty excited about learning a lot of stuff regarding world marriages and families. But looking back now, the most I learned from the class was from the presentations that the students gave.. not anything from her. She isn't flexible & is awful at communication.
I was extremely excited to take Abnormal Psychology, but looking back on the course I did not learn a whole lot. The course was overall a huge disappointment. Take it with someone else if possible.
Karen is definitely a decent teacher. She does a lot of group projects/presentations, and depends upon the students to teach the class a fair bit, but this makes it so the student HAS to read the text she assigns. Why are you a psych major if you don't like to read? Karen is a lenient grader if you at least do the work.
Karen Marsh is a wonderful person, but not so wonderful professor. Cancels class quite a bit. If you want to pass this class I suggest, going to class every single day - due to the random worksheets handed out. Lots of group work. Exams are difficult. Lots of videos.
She is a very boring teacher and it is hard to concentrate during her lectures.
lots of group projects and presentations, the clock never seemed to move fast enough even for a 50 minute class, was overall pretty easy but extremely boring
Horrible teacher.
TAKE HER ONLINE. I saw the not-so-hot reviews for her, but it seemed like all of the stuff people didn't like pertained to her in class items. I took her online section of Gender in Society: easiest A ever. On average, there a short 10 question quiz, a few easy one page papers, and a reading a week. Easiest A i've ever gotten.
One of the worst professors I've had. She is extremely boring and makes the 50 minutes go by so slow. No matter how hard you study for the tests you won't get a good grade. I read every required reading, did all the online quizzes, and made 100+ flashcards from her study guide and still got Cs on every test. DO NOT TAKE HER
Interesting class. I did not like her tests though. She would test on small details and statistics from the textbook readings, which was not what I would learn from them. There are a few group projects, but they're pretty easy. A lot of long videos as well. I wish I took this class online instead of having to go 4 days a week. But overall, not bad.
PSY2223 has by far been one of my favorite classes so far at UMD. The topics covered are extremely interesting and the forum discussions are very eye-opening and enjoyable. Each week usually consists of a few readings, an assignment or 2, short quiz, and an online discussion. Easy grader and no final exam. Highly recommend!
Marsh is not a very good teacher, however, her class was very easy. There are a lot of in class assignments that you cannot make up, so attending class is necessary to pass. Her quizzes were open book and open note and her exams basically are a combination of prior quizzes. Memorize quiz answers and you will be fine. She posts all quizzes online.
Karen is so sweet and very easy going. All her quizzes are open note and book but the tests arent and they can be very specific. She has a lot of stories that relate to the topic, you can tell she has a lot of experience. Overall very interesting and easy class.
Very interesting class! Karen is very nice and teaches at a good pace. Sometimes she fails to describe exactly what she wants from you but if you ask she is more than happy to explain. Her tests might get a little difficult and there are random in-class assignments so attending class would be a good idea.
Have to log on every day for an online class for participation. Doesn't give any feedback but a decent grader. MUST participate in all online discussions by her instructions (must post on Mon, Tues, Wed) for full credit. Annoying for an online class, but overall pretty easy.
Gender in Society was a super interesting subject and I really enjoyed the assignments and videos that she chose. The organization of the online course was really well structured and all of the quizzes and the discussions were doable. It was a decent amount of work but for a 4 credit course, it was an easy A if you put the time in.
Was super hard to get ahold of. If I emailed her I would not get a response for days, sometimes up to a week. I got sick with the flu and tried to reschedule an exam and I could not get ahold of her. She sometimes wasn't even in her scheduled office hours.
Puts statistics on quizzes and asks for specifics unrelated to course (ex: who funded the ___ website?"). Doesn't clearly state expectations for assignments or the course overall. Go to class because she will do in class assignments throughout the week. She is super sweet and nice, but her teaching is confusing and not beneficial.
This class didn't do much to expand my knowledge. There is no textbook, there are minimal powerpoint lectures, hardly any note taking, and all we did was watch movies and random videos. It was hard to understand what was important. The few quizzes we had were not an accurate representation of our knowledge because the questions were too specific.
I took her Abnormal Psych course and the homework material in nowhere close to the things she tests you on. She isn't very empathetic and expects you to know what she is talking about. She is little help when you don't understand something and she is rude in her emails.
Karen spent her time in school and in the field, so don't get me wrong, she definitely knows her stuff and can answer any question you could possibly have on the topic, she's just... a bit bland. Lecture heavy and kind of monotone. Tries to get class involved with a few activities and group projects but they're more so just a pain in the butt.
Her "quizzes" are 40 questions and very specific. They are open note but I still struggled to find the answer. Her lectures are vague and you have to listen to what she is saying or else you will miss what she really wants you to know. Group projects weren't bad, in class assignments are easy, lots of outside reading and videos to watch.
Professor Marsh seems to have a lot of first hand experience in the psychology field which makes her lectures more interesting because we get to hear real life examples. This class was fairly easy, but there is often partner/group work so if you have troubles working with others I'd suggest a different class.
Lots of easy group projects, quizzes are basically tests but always open notes. Just pay attention to what she says more than what is on the slides. Fun class, easy grader, funny jokes.
I LOVE KAREN. SHE IS THE ABSOLUTE BEST. 10/10 would recommend. She has changed my passion for psych and now I hate it.
shes pretty nice
She's so nice and helpful, I genuinely look forward to seeing her and being in her class. She replies so quickly to e-mails and genuinely cares about her students.
Her quizzes are open note and seem very easy but even when I know I did well, I end up getting a 66%. However, the discussions and papers she assigns are easy A's and cushion your grade quite a bit. Not a big fan of this class or professor however.
Professor Marsh is extremely monotoned. Her lectures are hard to follow and hard to pay attention too. she is not good with responding to emails, or explaining the assignments that are given. She randomly plays videos without any context or explination. She has also had to contact ITS every single class (not an exaggeration) to play the videos.
Karen gives 0 explanation as to what she is discussing in class. She will play random videos that do not seem to fit in with what "marriages and families" is supposed to be about. Can't work sound on videos every time. The text book is a waste of money; it's only used for 3 weeks. Quizzes are open phone, so you do not learn anything. Only 2 exams.
Show up, do the readings and take good notes and you will do fine. BUT she is not a very good teacher. Very bad with technology and can never get the videos to play audio. Also very difficult to get ahold of. Took a week for her to get back to my email. She happens to be my advisor as well, but I will never go to her for help. Very unhelpful.
NEVER take psy 2023 with her. she makes the class so difficult and you will not learn anything. quizzes every thursday on random videos and lectures, they are open book and note but you will rarely ever find the answer for anything. She is very smart, but cannot teach. Is not helpful at all when you ask about exams and etc. no study guides at all.
Psy 2023 with her is pointless. You will not learn one thing. She gives quizzes every Thursday on who knows what. She is such a smart woman but can't teach at all. Everything is so confusing you just want to scream. If you ask for help she just kinda laughs and confuses you even more. Nothing actually pertains to marriages and families worldwide.
She was a nice person, but she was too quiet for me to hear her and most of what she says is on the tests. Her slides were not very helpful. Her quizzes were open note and you could look things up, but a lot of her questions I did not remember learning. Her tests were hard even though I would study everything provided for help.
I came here to learn psychology not listen to zombie.
just don't do it. what an absolute mess. resources are useless, rarely peer reviewed or even cited. power points are a joke, and you just get to listen to her ramble on about who knows what with no structure. so many quiz questions on things we definitely didn't learn. unstructured, unorganized, unprofessional.
Not the greatest at all. Nice lady, but her quizzes for this class seemed impossible at times even with open note, book, and internet.
Her online structure is the same for every class. 1 Page paper, Quizzes & discussions. Quizzes are impossible 25 questions & 30 minutes. Even doing all the lectures and readings, the quizzes are IMPOSSIBLE! Assignments are easy and she grades easy but only 6pts so dont do much for the grade. Discussions are only thing holding me. Read syllabus!
Quizzes are super hard even when you do all the material. I missed a few quizzes and assignments and she was very understanding and opened them back up for me to have a week to make them up. Overall kind of hard class just due to the quizzes but she was very understanding.
Essays/discussion posts are easy while the quizzes were tough. The class was not at all what I expected and seemed a little all over the place. It was easy and she had everything due on fridays which is nice.
Her quizzes are impossible even though they are open to everything. What she lectures isn't even close to what is on the tests/quizzes. This class would've been better with a different prof, dont recommend
She has great lectures, but you do have to attend and listen to them. Take notes or record the lectures. She does not provide any information on canvas and announcements are through email. The quizzes are difficult, but use your DSM and listen in class you'll do fine.
Karen is a very nice lady. I find that her teaching style is very bland, but everything she says must be written down as there is a strong possibility of it being on the test. Take notes on everything she teaches if you must have her as your professor. I personally wouldn't take a course with her again, however, she is knowledgeable about her field
This professor will not provide you with any feedback or help. She probably won't even show up to her office hours. Weekly quizzes are hard and you will need to read and take notes on all the resources but even then some of the content on the quizzes are unfindable.
please, for your own sanity DON'T TAKE A CLASS WITH KAREN. She will never respond to your emails. figuring out what you need to know for each test and quiz is near-impossible, especially considering the class does not use a textbook or study guide. don't skip class, it's your only hope to pass. I have NEVER struggled so much due to a teacher before
This professor assigns roughly three weekly assignments. The discussions are meant to be posted 4 times on different days, if you post more than once on Friday you get no credit #bogus. She is very strict about late work, the assignment closes at midnight when the paper would be due at 11:59 pm and nowhere does she say she accepts late work
Do not take a class with Karen Marsh. She doesn't give good directions, a lot of outside reading, and it is so difficult to reach her through email. I let her know a week before that I would be missing a quiz, and she said to send an email. I did not hear from this woman for a MONTH! The only plus is she reuses quiz questions on the test, good luck
This class is tough, but you will do well if you show up for class, do the extra credit, and study for the exams. Make sure to copy the power points into your notes before class, so you can fill in what she says for the knowledge checks. Everything she says is important. You will learn a lot and it will be long-term knowledge. Lots of group work.
Professor Marsh did not have any exams, only graded on weekly writing assignments and quizzes. The weekly material provided didn't actually relate to the quiz content, so sometimes it was hard to get decent grades on quizzes. Overall, if you're looking for a class you can put little effort into, this would be it.
She is the most confusing woman I have ever met. I have never had a professor give such unclear directions. She said "write a one page paper about something" SOMETHING?! My grade dropped 30% over one day without any reasoning. Also, the knowledge checks are out of 10 points, the average on our 3rd knowledge check was 5.6, that is absurd.
She's a nice lady, and doesn't have bad intentions, but she is not the best professor. Her instructions on both in class activities and for assignments outside of class are very vague. She overall is not too harsh of a grader, but I've heard classmates say otherwise. Not a lot of proper due dates, and starts lessons without introductions/context.
I think she is a nice lady and that her class was fairly easy, however she is not that organized and can be hard to reach out to. If you take her try to go to every class because you could miss something like a quiz or graded in-class activities, which are all worth points and can be difficult/ineligible to makeup. There is also a required novel.
If you don't show up you're screwed but then if you DO show up she drones on and in the most monotone voice imaginable. There's almost no other assignments so your grade is almost entirely dependent on exams which there are no clear guidelines on.The most stressful class I've taken my grade was constantly in danger I cried frequently.
Marsh's class is all about weekly assignments and quizzes. The content doesn't always match the quizzes, making them tricky. But with Unstuck AI and some effort, you can get through this class. Overall, a decent online option if you don't mind the challenge.
This class was absolutely awful straight from the deepest parts of academic hell. Every lecture felt like torture, filled with stress and confusion instead of learning. If negative stars were possible, this course would deserve them all.
She does not use a textbook, just online readings that she does not talk about or mention in class. Her slides are not helpful, as there is 4 slides for a whole lecture, with little information. Not very good at mentioning due dates either. Had a project due after she gave no instructions and very little guidance on what we were supposed to do.
This class with this instructor is disappointing, and everything she does is very memorization-based (quizzes and exams). Exams decide your entire grade; there is no clear structure to the class, and no due dates. She posts readings, but never incorporates them into the lecture. Students got a lot more from this class with a different instructor.
