Very passionate about philosophy, and as a result teaches it well. Her class requires a fair amout of homework along with some community service hours. In the long run the work is worth it, and you'll be a pro in philosophy.

Tried to cram 4 months of work into a 7 week block class. Hope that has been revised. Conflict with a few stdents in cls who felt she was disrespectful. Her daughtr was in the class (no one knew) and would fall asleep. I'd sure like to know HER grade!
Excellent teacher! Very knowledgeable and good at presenting the material.I felt she was fair and open to opinions and discussion as long as it the view wasn't discriminating. I highly recommend taking Ethics and Values from her.
hard tests
Nice lady. Doesn't cover too much material. Some required and difficult reading. Lots of writing. 15 hours of community service. Brings her nice dog to class. Allows for group projects and lots of class participation. Test are hard so STUDY and take good notes.
Great teacher! She makes sure you understand the sometimes difficult material, takes an interest in her students, makes the course relevant to current events. She's the best!
Class sucked. The book you read suckes. This class is a big waste of time. I can't believe this is required. What a bloody waste of time.
She is easy but makes you do a TON of busy work. Be prepaired to spend time on the busy work. Basically if you give her something you will get a good grade.
She is the sweetest lady among all the professors. Caring and understanding, her class is also not that hard.
She is a fun teacher... even tho people thought she was tough but she was fair.
The best teacher I've had at UVSC. You can't go wrong with her classes.
Dr. Mizell is a really nice and helpful teacher. She is also very personable and has a great sense of humor. She never makes anyone feel dumb, and encourages creativity. If you're looking for a cake-walk, this isn't the class to take because you are required to do 20 hours of service. However, the service hours are helpful for graduating!
I've had a few classes with Mizell. I love her assigned readings which are from all kinds of sources. She teaches a lot of cool classes like Animal Rights and Philosophy of Childhood. Check 'em out!
she is a great teacher
she is the worst teacher I have ever.
The statement below is false. She is a very good teacher.
She does not help your students at all. She is always late. And she is have you do all of these assigments that do nothing with the subject matter. She test ask questions she did not talk about. If you send your a e-mail she is not willing to help you as a educator. She only passes the buck. She exspects all students to know this subject.
She is crazy! Anyone who likes her is definitely in the minority, She is biased against men, and she looks like Sigourney Weaver on crack. I'm sure she is great if you are in her small circle, but to most of her students, she is quite rude.
This has been a totally fun semester. She is smart and funny and goes out of her way to make sure you get it. If you're a slacker she's not the teacher for you. But you learn a lot of interesting stuff and she understands when you have a problem - personal or school - and tries to help you out. Tests aren't easy, but I've done okay. Just study.
Good Teacher. She is a little difficult, but it is worth it. Dr. Mizell makes studing ethics fun and exciting. Just be prepared to learn and work hard. But, with everything that requires hard work, there always is a greater feeling of acomplishment.
She tries to get a discussion out of all of her material and doesn't have to listen to herself the whole time. She is very workable and understands that we have a life outside of school. She does require a portfolio and service hours that she explains the first week of class. She was really nice about listening to everyone's opinions.
She's incoherent, gives no standards/templates for work. All knowledge comes from either you or fellow students. Total HW time a week 20-30 hours. If you are super organized w/ a lot of free time on your hands, and want your writing to become a target take this class. If not, don't. Going to probably have to retake, messed up my whole semester.
Her grading is not outlined clearly. what she says and what her sylabus say are conflicting. if you work hard in this class you will not get an A. not a cool class. not an easy class
Professor Mizell is grammar obsessive on writing assignments. She puts grammar above content. She makes this class too hard for being a general education course. Professor Mizell also gives too much busy work for a three credit class. I would recommend finding someone else, to fulfill the Ethics and Values requirement.
this teacher doesn't do the ordinary stuff. she talks about things that are relevant and if students had questions or needed something explained she would take the time to explain it and wouldn't worry about what she was "supposed" to be teachings. very knowledgeble about her subject and seemed interested in other students' viewpoints
She can talk the talk, but can’t walk the walk.
I am really surprised at these comments! I honestly think Professor Mizell was a good teacher. She came highly recommended. If you just do your work and ask questions when something is unclear or go talk to her, she is more than willing to help students out! She cares. I don't think her classes are that difficult, and it's not like I'm a brainiac!
Professor Mizell is a fair teacher; for the philosophy department. Additionally, with being an average educator, I would not recommend her to other students; because of all the work that is involved in her class. Ethics and Values is only a three credit class; and she gives her students hours of busy work a week; that surpasses three credits. I di
she is tough and expects you to learn something but she is a great teacher and is always willing to work with you if you have problems
Dr. Mizell is full of herself. She makes her student’s do way to much time consuming work; for a three credit class. She is also very misleading with what she says about her class; and what is written in her syllabus. There are better educations at UVSC. I would not waste my time with this one.
I higghly recommend Dr. Mizell. She ia an amazing person and human being. The main goal of her curriculum is to make us think. I beilieve that she is very successful in this sense. If you are open minded and not affraid to be exposed to other point of views, this is the right class for you. About the amount of reading this is COLLEGE what do you wa
I recommend Dr. Mizell to everyone I know that needs to take this class. The reading may be found to be difficult, but he class is fun because she opens it up to discussion. She makes us think for ourselves and opens up her students minds. I learded so much from this class. It was very interesting.
I wouldn't recommend this teacher to anyone. Unless you have a great interest in pouring into the subject of ethics this teacher isn't for you. Way to much work, and don't miss any class or you will be lost. The tests are rediculously difficult.

Dr. Mizell made a subject that was very un-interesting to me, very un-interesting. She was very funny, and made the material relate to real life. I was horrified of this class when I saw I had to take it, but it turned out to be the best class I have ever taken at UVSC, thanks to Dr. Mizell
Wow. I have trouble sleeping at night, because i stay up thinking about things Dr. Mizell talked about. Great teacher.
I enjoyed this class. I was taking a few harder classes and this was my fun class. Dr. Mizell was very interesting. She is a great teacher.
cool class. not a teacher to take if you dont want to learn - she's way funny and makes sure you understand. i've had some hard things come up this semester and she always works with me. the readings are hard but she's good at explaining
Awesome Teacher! Best I've had since I've been studying here in the states. Knows her stuff and relates well with her students.
She is a great teacher! She is open to different opinions. She wants everyone to understand the different theories, so she will help as much as possible.
She is the devil.
I like the person on here that is mad that everyone likes the professor, so he/she has to say that it's only one person giving the professor a good rating. Dr. Mizell's class was great. She is very friendly and flexible about due dates. Pretty easy A
I think Dr. M is not a bad person; I just would not take her class again. She is way too liberal and makes her students do too many service hours in one semester. We, meaning students, have lives too. I just did not care about this class....... Don’t get me wrong, I think Dr. M is not a bad person.
this teacher goes out of her way to help you succeed. wish there were more like these at uvsc. she makes it clear that she cares whether you get the point of the class and that you understand
My second time taking Ethics and Values (failed it first time). I really enjoyed it. Took it summer-therefore easier. Dr. Mizell helps you relate philosophy to real-life. She encourages students to ask questions and share thoughts. Teaching style: She cares more about learning than going by the book. She's the major reason I am a philosophy major now.
She is always right. This whole class is based on what people think and feel, but you must agree with her know matter what. If not, than she will grade you poorly. What a useless person and teacher.
She is very helpful. She will spend a lot of time helping you if you ask. Tests were easy if you study. She loves her subject and makes it interesting. She makes philosophy and ethics applicable to real life.
She is a great professor. She knows her stuff. I learned so much fom her that was applicable to my other classes and to life in general. Philosophy is a borning subject for a lot of people, but she makes it applicable to life.
She has a great knowledge of the subject and is ready to talk about pretty much any issue you have. I just want to say that you don't have to agree with her opinons but your arguments had better be well thought out. She won't let you slide by with nonsense , which is how a Phil. teacher should be. I would reccomend her for sure.
I've heard that Prof. Mizell plays favorites (maybe I don't notice because I am one?) It's simple really: show her that you are interested and engaged in the class, and you will do well. She is not strict on due dates or assignments--more-so on what you learn.
She's pretty cool, Some may think she's hard because she challenges ideas and wants you to think, but she's easy if you are honest about your views and use information from the class.
Prof. Mizell is a no-nonsense teacher. She is very involved with the material, and seems to want us to seriously engage in discussions on Ethics. She wants the students to discover their own opinions and then live by what they learn about right and wrong and themselves. I would take the class again.
This was my least favorite class. I was always scared to go to class becuase there were aguments between her and the students. I would never take a class from her again. It was pretty rough. Our class started out with about fourty and finished with 10. I got a B+ on my own opinion.
You use Pojman book and he has a slight bias and sometimes weak arguments. This is a 20 hours of service required class. If you read the material and write your papers with the material in mind you'll be fine. The service places are provided. She's nice and has a cute dog. Very experienced just comment some and not have your phone ring in class.
20 Hours of community Service!! She acts like we're philosophy majors, this is her whole world. She also offended almost everyone personally in the class. We barely had a class left by the end of the semester. Do not take from Dr. Mizell! Take from someone whose fair.
Prof. Mizell earned her degree the old fashioned way, hard work. She expects no less from her students. Ethics is a difficult class regardless. As long as you read the book, comment and back up your opinions in class you'll be fine. She offers 10 hours of community service at an organization of her choice in leu of a final.
No final exam if you do service learning projects. Stay on her good side and ask a lot of questions in class and you'll do great.
She didn't teach anything about ethics. her lessons were boring and long. she has very short temper and is not very nice!!
I would define her as Morose and against everything.
Great teacher. Very personable. Interesting lectures. One of my favorite classes at UVU so far. I would recommend her to anyone, just do the assignments and speak up in class.
I hated this class. There are no tests. She allows you to do 10 hours of service or take a final exam, which is nice. However, there are 12 quizzes that are pretty difficult. Huge on animal rights. She is very scattered brained and I hated her class.
She has some very interesting views. Her class can be fun if people open their minds to others opinions and ideas and choose to not get offended. Her quizzes are hard, especially at first. I thought I was getting a C+ her class, but it turned out I got an A-. Just make sure to get her to stick to the subject matter and not off on some tangent.
TERRIBLE class. I dreaded going to her class every time. She's one of those professors who think her class is the only one you're taking so there's a lot of work. She also thinks that everyone should have an opinion on everything and to be aggressive about it. Long lectures, really boring.
As long as you believe the exact way she does, it is a great class. If you dare have another opinion she will shoot you down and make you feel like an idiot for raising your hand. Lots of boring, confusing, scattered lectures. She has a few student-led class discussions, but she dominates the argument and barely lets anyone else respond.
I dreaded taking ethics & wasn't surprised at how difficult the class was. That said, I liked Prof. Mizell. Yeah, the class is HARD but show up, participate, do your reading & you'll do fine. She was helpful & her door was always open to students. You didn't have to agree with her but you did have to intelligently explain your own positions.
I thought she was a great professor. She got off on tangents a lot, but that facilitated rather than hindered our learning. If you share your opinion, you had better be able to back it up unless you want to sound like an idiot. Quizes were very easy. Overall, she was awesome and was instrumental in my decision to become a philosophy major.
Karen was a great teacher, she helped with questions about readings or whatever else we needed. I had ethics and values during my study abroad in France, and it was wonderful! We had our meetings in a cafe in front of the beach; it felt like we really were like those philosophers just having a talk about life. Even if we needed food she'd help with
I thought she was a really good teacher. If you worked hard and were a respectful student she was nice back and would help you learn more. She was pretty lenient on the homework. I am so excited to take another class from her in the Fall. She is a great person and I enjoyed being in her class very much! I had her for Ethics and values.
Dr. Mizell was a great teacher. She is here to teach Philosophy, so don't come expecting to learn nothing. Initially I didn't like her because she loves to debate, but I ended up really liking it because she helps you really think about your opinion and why you believe certain things. Very willing to help struggling students. I would recommend her!
Dr. Mizell's class was interestin. I didn't think I would like it, but she made it very entertaining.
I didn't really enjoy the class, but I really liked Karen! She was really fun and I thought she was fairly easy. You have to do 20 hours of service, but I enjoyed it. I would definitely take her again!
The class was very disorganized and caused me alot of stress! Prof Mizell is a kind lady and makes phil about as exciting as it could be. With that being said, the way she ran the class and administered grades left me a bit mift!
Worst class I have ever taken! She is not clear on how she wants you to write her papers and won't accept anything other than what she believes. I feel like I left that class with a lower IQ than when I went in. Do NOT take any class from her, ever!
wow~! I was "lost" most of the semester--great discussions but here and there and everywhere most of the time. I really like Dr. Mizell--nice lady. study chapters and ask any questions you have BEFORE each weekly quiz and tests. Understand the concepts and be prepared to write several serious/thought provoking papers. Not an easy grade.
Dr. Mizell is a very nice person, and I believe she lives what she teaches, which is ethics, in this class at least. She has a very interesting background, and is knowledgeable about her subject. The class prompted lots of lively discussion, which was enjoyable, and conducive to applying the principles she teaches. She is very respectful.
she was easy to reach and talk to. she had 2 other people helping out as well as extra credit it i needed it. I took her TV class. it was GREAT! worked well.. the videos are long.. but if you take quick notes and read the readings, as well as the 2 main papers you will do great!
Her expectations are difficult to understand because they are not clear. She is extremely biased and has her favorite students in the class.
Karen was a very easy teacher. I really enjoyed her lectures. She like class participation and I did not feel I had to agree with her. If I had a different opinion then she did... I just had to have a good argument as why I felt the way I did. She wants her students to enjoy class and trys to make it fun.
She is so boring. I felt like I could have gotten a better view point from another teacher. I would not take this from her. We started with a full classroom and ended up with only 15 students. All of this because of the 20 hr charity and her. We have a life Professor. I am a single father. Come on. Take this from Professor Potter.
I really enjoyed her class. She is very helpful and is very personable. Just do the work and you'll get a good grade.
Karen is sweet and cares about every student in her class. She is passionate and knowledgeable in her field. If you do the work, and PREPARE for upcoming tests, you will get a good grade. Ask a lot of questions on material, and upcoming tests. Her only downfall is the lack of clarity on how or what you will be tested on. Very good class overall.
This class was incredibly sporatic both in assignments as well as discussion. It was easy, but the teacher seemed offended at the tiniest disagreement from her views. I tried to ask her why she gave me less than an A on a paper and she couldn't give me a reason. Then she got angry at me and made the class totally unenjoyable the rest of the time
Avoid her! Very unclear in instructions for assignments. She seems irritated if you ask for clarification. She's condescending, boring, and doesn't care to give feedback. She put 5 of 12 grades in, didn't add any more, and blindsides you on your final grade. She needs a new job where inability to motivate people is required. She'll excel at that.
I love Mizell! She is a sweetheart and she really cares about her students. But, she will get upset if you don't read the assigned reading (as she should). The class is very interesting and required a lot of discussion. She and her class are why I'm minoring in ethics! Be sure to keep an open mind and be ready to participate.
Professor Mizell is great at facilitating open and insightful classroom discussions. She is pretty clear about her grading expectations and will always give feedback to those who want to earn a good grade. There is a TON of reading homework, and on a few instances, 30-40 page readings weren't uploaded until the day before assignments were due.
She forgot to give us a study guide for the third in-class exam, so she gave us a scratch-off exam that most people in the class did poorly on. I enjoyed the structure of the final exam, but overall the reading summaries were unclear in their grading criteria, and the same goes for the exams.
She knows the topic shes teaching about, but she's not prepared & horrible w/communication outside of class Won't check ur emails unless the subject says URGENT Quizzes are multiple choice but nothing 2 do w/class discussion/study guides Lots of reading & never puts grades into computer until end of semester. assignments/tests graded at same scale
I cannot stress the extent to which I recommend that you do not take any class from Prof. Karen Mizell. Seriously drop any class with her.
Avoid her. She is not easy to get ahold of. Class is the most boring thing I have ever done. Lectures every class with only her talking in a monotone voice the entire time. Interesting subject but she makes it not interesting. Says everyone should have an open mind, yet doesn't follow her on words. Calls people arrogant when they disagree with her.
I received an A, but it could've gone either way. If you're used to professors who are pretty diligent in getting grades promptly into Canvas, don't take this course from Prof. Mizell. Grading criteria were not only ambiguous, but it was hard to figure out how I was doing in class since grades weren't put on Canvas. Discussions were tyrannical too.
I don't know why she is rated so badly. I think she is a very funny professor that really loves making you think. She cares more about what you learn and think then what you write or even if you attend class. I think she is a fantastic professor and I would love to take another class of hers.
This class is incredibly easy until you take the quizzes. Everything is super laid back until you get the quiz and you have no idea where any of it came from. Even doing all of the readings and memorizing all of the terminology, the quizzes are wack.
If you are taking the course to learn about the subject, do not take said course from Dr. Karen Mizell. Professor Mizell spends almost no time discussing the "assigned reading" in class. Instead, she rambles on, almost never connecting any of her thoughts back to the reading or any coherent point for that matter. She is also extremely patronizing.
Good professor, she does make you talk though
Professor Mizell is tough but it's not impossible. Very opinion based class which is nothing short of annoying. Lots of reading, frequent tests when I feel like nothing was learned of the answers on the test. Hard grading and attendance is mandatory.
Let me start by saying I'm not a student who is not willing to put in the effort to get an A. While I was excelling in my "hard classes", I found Prof. Mizell's class the hardest class to pass. You can know the material and fail tests because they aren't correlated. Her expectations are unclear, yet it is impossible to please her. There goes my 4.0
This class was hard because there were less than 20 things in the grade book. A few times I felt like the prof marked me down for having a differing opinion than her, which was my biggest gripe about this class. If you dont have the exact opinion shes looking for it seems like she marks you down. I got marked down for saying I dont like Ghandi.
This professor is totally willing to help you when you don't understand a concept or miss a connection. Ask questions!
Overall, professor Mizell was great. Her class was difficult, but rewarding. Be prepared to study, you can't just BS this course. There are not that many points in her class, so if you miss some on an assignment, you're going to feel it. The class is a do at your own pace sort of thing, and i enjoyed it for that reason.
This class was very well structured. I took the online class and was able to work ahead and it was always clear on what was expected
Karen is a very caring person when it comes to writing assignments. I did feel a bit taken aback with all the reading and but this class has been pretty easy for the most part. I did well on the discussion rather than the quizzes.
She is a good teacher but there is a good amount of videos and articles you will need to read to keep up.
Professor Mizell gave great feedback and was caring and felt like she graded fairly. Would recommend this Professor/Class for anyone.
This was great. The topics were interesting and forced you to think about what you were reading. The quizzes were easy and could be taken 2 times and tests were not too long but did include essay questions. They were not too hard. Notes were allowed to be used on all tests and quizzes. Grading was fair.
This professor is very strict and unforgiving. She often posted quizzes the day before they were due and wouldn't allow anyone to take them beforehand. She was really hard to communicate with and wouldn't provide any compromise. Do not take this class unless you absolutely have to, I was fighting for my life. This class made me want to drop out.
Unfortunately I have to take another online class of hers, but she must be reading these because I found her to be an easy grader and mildly easy to reach. My biggest gripe is that she seemed tied up in tons of other departments and events so half the time quizzes never got posted or the midterm was posted on during spring break.
