her lecture and her test are unrelated, so better watch out for this prof.
Doesn't seem to make sense, the lectures do not go with the tests very well. Hard to follow the class.
make sure you know that metric system. This class wasnt all that bad. I thought she was a cool teacher, and gave really easy big point assignments to count besides the exams
Fair, Honest, Caring. Your grade is what you put into the class. Extra credits will pull you thru. Her tests reflect only what is taught in class.
VERY NICE TEACHER WANTS YOU TO DO WELL OFFERS EXTRA CREDIT TO BOOST YOUR GRADE. ALTHOUGH SHE DOESNT CLARIFY WHAT WILL BE ON THE TEST SO BETTER WATCH OUT. STUDY THE CHAPTER IN THE BOOK AND STUDY THE NOTES. LABS ARE DIFFICULT TOO.
You have to work hard in this class to get a good grade but she does help you anytime you need it and you have to reed the book and study the notes. You also have to learn a lot for the labs. She also shows some good movies and tells good stories.
SHE IS A HARD TEACHER. HER TESTS ARE UNRELATED TO THE LECTURES. SHE DOES NOT FOLLOW THE BOOK AND SHE THE WHOLE TIME I WAS SO CONFUSED
this lady is my mom and she is a great teacher! she gets so excited about biology you can't help but smile. the bio i took in high school is harder than what she teaches so if you think the class is too hard you are lazy, pathetic and never going to get into medical school.
persky is a very good teacher and i would recommend her to anyone. bio 102 with any teacher requires alot of studying but she makes it bearable.
She is nice and helpful. The only problem I saw was her organization and how she presented the material
She's a very nice person but her material is very hard i guess its not her material but you know but study her outline notes and read the book b/c alot of time she'll take questions for the tests from there but she does warn to read the book. When she says to this then you do this b/c that's whats g
very nice teacher. Hard if you don't study the book. First test is killer, then it is soo easy.
i love her. end of story. shes the best bio teacher at cod. BEST.
very helpful, tough material but she is a good teacher and will help when your struggling
She is very good, funny, a 2 1/2 class flies with her teaching and talking. Tests are hard, a lot of memorizing graphics, but she is very good.
Professor Persky is a great teacher, her style of teaching makes class easy to sit through. She does a really good job of clarifying material and she is always willing to answer questions outside of class. The material is not easy and the class requires a lot of studying, but you learn so much useful information. This was a GREAT class!

Extremely clear and encouraging. If you don't slack (summer is no time for it!) you'll do fine. Tough: a 92 is an A, 82 a B. Matter-of-fact and knows her stuff.
Awesome teacher. I took micro with her over the summer. It was a lot of information for a short session, but she made it interesting and clear. It isn't the easiest class, but as long as you study, you'll do fine. She takes the time to make sure you understand the concepts. If you have to take micro, definitely sign up for her class.
She is the best teacher for this subject!!! She has the best memory tricks and clear objectives for the class. Slackers Beware!
She's one of the best teachers I've had.
karen is an awsome teacher! if something is confusing, she will explain it till everyone gets it. She has lots of office hours and will ALWAYS help you out! She is fun and interesting. Read the chapter! Pay attention in class! SHe is fair but you do need to study. She offers extra credit which is easy. I would take her for any class she taught.
Very knowledgable and willing to help you learn, however, the way she sets up her tests can make things a lot more difficult i.e. matching with more answers than questions and the answers can be used more than once, but if you study and go to class, you should do fine.
Mrs. Persky is an amazing teacher. She really knows her stuff. She knows lots of fun trivia, and keeps the class laughing. Study her bullets and powerpoints, but you also NEED to study the book. You can get an A, but its some work.
She is very confusing, and doesn't seem to teach chapters in any particular order. Her tests don't seem to go along well with what she teaches. The videos she shows are very poor. P.S. She sounds kind of like Mickey Mouse!
Karen is possibly the best teacher I have ever had. I can't believe how much I learned from her. She's not easy tho, you will have to read the text book and you will have to study. She's also more than willing to help out if you're stuck on something. She got ME to finally understand the Kreb's cycle! I'd take her for any class she teaches.
Although she is the best teacher for this topic, she tended to play favorites which made learning difficult at times. Other then that she was fair and just in grading with her 92-100 A scale. Her tests are essay, short answer, and multiple choice format. She's the best Microbiology teacher at COD if you are willing to work hard.
Awesome instructor, great person, caring individual who demands you know the material. I studied my butt off all summer during this course, and my grade was evident of that. I'm a future healthcare professional and I truly appreciated the challenge this course prsented me with.
the teacher should not teach in the summer. WAY too much compared to other teachers. She would ignore you or take off if you had a question. Didn't give enough time for unknowns. Tests were horrible
Funny helpful understanding and smart all the things that make a great teacher. Had to study a lot but sooo paid off. Reaaly wish I could take her again.
class syllabus was way too much for summer. makes unprofessional comments to students. not in sync with other micro teachers. too many questions on exams. the whole semester was ROUGH.
Excellent teacher, one of my favorites so far! Explains things very clearly and her handouts/powerpoints help you study for the test. By no means an easy class; lots of material to cover and you have to put in time outside of class to get a good grade (actually read the book/work on lab notebook). Take it fall/spring not summer. I loved this class!
I am really upset with this teacher, I do not think that she is fair at all.Last week(the night of big storm), she lectured like nothing was happening. A lot people could not maked, but she did not care, in fact she had a pop quiz the next class. This is a very insensitive position. She also expected that the students already have her level.
What qualification to teach Microbiol. Reads and lectures.COD should replace or find good teacher. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY IN HER CLASS.
I had this professor over the summer and loved the class. She made microbiology very interesting and I was never bored. Her tests were hard, but I learned a lot.
She is imposible! The only good thing is she loves biology, but she makes learning difficult!..and those pop quizzes were not helping! You never know what she whants you to know for that day. This is discouraging as it can change your grade a lot, even though you had A's on other tests. her grading scale was 92%-100% for an A, 82%-91% for B.
Professor Persky isn't an easy teacher but her class is very interesting. There is A LOT of reading and the pop quizes can be tricky. If you study hard in her class you can get an A but unless you have an entire weekend to devote to studying before the exam I wouldn't hope for an A. She's very nice and helpful and is willing to come in early.
loved the class!! it was fun and interesting! not an easy class, you must devote a lot of your time.. i learned a lot though.. shes a good teacher.. she gave out powerpoints and notes that were going to be on the test...only thing i hated were those pop quizzes and the grading scale.
Persky is the greatest teacher of all time, better than Socrates, Confucius, Kierkegaard, Sartre or Jung. She is jovial, amicable, probity, rectitude, nestor, perspicacious. She is always willing to help. She is hard, but well worth it, you will enjoy every second of her class. It is a privilege and honor to have her as a teacher. She is awesome
terrible class. tests are hard. she is boring. offers extra credit but for anyone who works during the day, there is no way you can attend it and theres nothing else you can do about it
She is great in knowledge and teaching, very interesting lectures. It is not very easy topic and she is VERY demanding. If you take her, forget you have other things to do.
Professor Persky is the best teacher I have ever had at COD. She rocks!! She is not at all easy. You need to study, but she makes class fun. You learn so much practical knowledge as well. She is willing to help. I highly recommend her. She is caring and compassionate and really knows her stuff. Take her and enjoy!
Loved this class!! She is very knowledgeable & passionate about what she teaches. She is a hard teacher, but that is to make you think & work. Lectures & topics themselves- very interesting. Very good at relating things to real life. Definitely not an easy class, but great teacher, learned a lot, & have an appreciation now for this information.
A confused teacher, Disorganized.Looks reads a lot before lecturing.Memorizes well. But not a good teacher. However gives good grades to keep students happy. YOU WILL NOT LEARN MICROBIOLOGY, MAY BE LITTLE.Most feels that she is not qualified, have no major degree in the subject, but teaching many years so some experience
I took this class in summer (8 wk) it was def tough, but very fun. Persky is an excellent teacher, and makes sure everyone learns. She gives pop quizzes but most of the time un-popped them. Material is difficult and you MUST study. I studied the minimum and got a high C. Her grading scale is harder too. She is the best micro teacher cod has!
This teacher is wonderful! Not only is she knowledgable, she is very enthusiastic about the subject. She definitely kept me interested in a subject that isn't my forte. Take her. She is well worth it.
Great professor!!! She is so enthusiastic about micro and loves teaching. She is super helpful and really makes class interesting. This is the best class I've ever taken!
She was a great teacher who seemed to enjoy what she did.
She is a very nice teacher, BUT she is a hard teacher. You will learn a lot in her class, but it takes A LOT of time and studying! Only 3 people got A's. She grades on a 92% for an A. You will learn a lot, but it requires many hours of studying daily.
very hard class, too much material that she makes u cover on ur own time.all she does is read off the powerpoints created by someoneelse.no point in going to the lectures since u do evrything on ur own.messes up grades too much, inconsistent,BORING,tests are EXTREMELY HARD,no review,1 presentation,OVERWHELMING class, nice lady but NEVER AGAIN.
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE IN THE SUMMER. ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE A NURSING STUDENT. She is very interesting and you will learn a lot, but she literally crams 16 weeks of material into 8 weeks and does not have any consideration as to whether you have a life outside of the course. Exams are specific and difficult. YOU WILL NEVER GET OUT EARLY.EVER.
Boring Class, Talks too much, unclear, Powerpoint slides are good. Does not cover all lectures chapter by chapter. Just selects few.
She is very helpful and applies microbiology to the real world, giving us articles to read, and day-to-day info that's very interesting. You must read the chapters before you come to lecture, otherwise you might get a little lost. Also, it's difficult to miss class at all because of how fast-paced the class is.

Power points from slides are good. Lectures are dull. Persky reads a lot. Persky reads and trys to delet some comments from here, a dishonest person. She has some complex at this age wants something in front dee and ar on her name. I have no choice but to take her class because of timings and COD also puts her, a perm. fac.
worst teacher at COD. She seems nice but watch out. Her A is a 92%.If you have other choices don't take her I promise you will regret her because she is so unclear and unhelpful. You don't know what she wants and her tests are stupid and waste of time she only tries to confuse you. I regret taking her so much I had no other choice all were taken.
Don't take her if you are taking other classes at the same time. She expects you to teach yourself that's how much she makes you read and that's how much she covers. She pretends to be nice but I don't know I wish I took someone else really.
Her tests are HARD, study guides are not helpful, always surprise questions on the test. Has no patience in explaining to her students. She doesn't know how to teach. Grading scale is RIDICULOUSLY hard! 82% in order to get a B! as if the class is not hard enough.
This class is ridiculous. You don't know what to expect form Persky no matter how much you study. This class is hard and the ones who do good either took this class before ore have a micro background. Who ever is taking her I wish you luck because you are going to need it. HONESTLY!
She is a great professor she has high demands but she will make sure you know the information. She helps students pass, and she is very sweet!! She is willing to help you as long as she see you are working hard. Love this teacher! out of my 4 years in college I can really say she was the BEST
I took this class over the summer and it is a hard class, and professor perskey goes thru everything she would in a normal semester so you have to work really hard to do well in this class, I would not take another class with it, she is helpful if you ask her. The tests were hard, but if you do the assignments and labs you will still pass the class
this class is really time consuming over the summer because it is a 16 week course condensed into an 8 week course, so if taking it in the summer be prepared to work hard for a good grade. Professor Perskey is very enthusiastic towards the subject and very helpful when you go to her. Tests were hard but do all the assignments and you should be good
All the last 3 comments are from the same day and ratings are the same Persky probably wrote them herself becasue she is nothing of what they explain her. This teacher does not know how to teach. If you take her you will see she will make you memorize everything like Micro is your whole life. She needs help!

I thought she was a very good teacher. She describes things clearly, switches up her teaching styles and helps when you need it. Attendance is pretty much mandatory because you cover a lot of material each class period. It is a tough class, but her personality makes the boring stuff bearable.
people who complain about persky are just frustrated. This class is hard, no matter what teacher you take. Persky is really good at explaining things, but her study guides could be more thorough. Tests are HARD. Be prepared to study A LOT if you want to pass. Micro might be easier with another teacher, but persky isn't a bad pick either.
Some of the material was difficult, but in my class the material was spoon-fed, which got a pretty annoying. She can get a little preachy and goes off into rants about certain things, but if you want a teacher to explain a concept over and over until you get it even if it makes you want to gouge your eyes out this is a good one!
Study guides terrible - expects you to memorize chapters in book - I liked micro before I took her
1/2 way through the class and it has been one of the hardest classes at COD. a lot of self study is involved i average 4-6 hour/week and i am getting a b. some of the concepts are difficult, but if you ask for help she will give it to you. overall she is a tough, but good teacher
Mrs. Perswy is an awesome teacher. The class is hard but what do you people expect - it's microbiology! Anyway, if you study and attend every class meeting, you should be fine.
micro in general is a difficult subject. persky has 4 lecture tests(4th is final) and 2 lab exams.book is not used in class usually but definitely needed.anything is fair game.study guides are very general.she literally loves being a microbiologist and is very helpful when you need it. i would recommend her but be prepared to work!
By far the hardest class I have ever taken (I already have a bach. in business.)! She is nice but there is too much work! The class should have focused more on diseases caused by bacteria, but instead we were drawing difficult diagrams of useless things. I wish I would have taken another professor. I worked extremely hard and just got a B.
Persky is a great teacher- she's genuinely interested in microbiology and wants to share it with her students. I took Micro1420 in 8wk summer course and it was the hardest, but best class I've had at COD. Be prepared to work hard, but if you need help she's available. Definitely a great teacher, I wish more were like her!
Persky was definitely a good teacher! I was in the 8 week summer course and it was brutal. But Persky gives test essay questions before hand and spoon-feeds information. Its a lot of memorizing, but its really not that bad! you'll learn a lot of things that you can use in every day life too. I'd definitely take a class with her again if offered :)
Professor Persky is a great teacher. She is helpful; always available for help. She has office hours, tutoring hours, and offers advising help. The class requires memorizing quiet a bit of information, but if you focus on the main highlights you will be in good shape. She gives a review before every exam and those are the main ideas to focus on.
Persky is a dedicated teacher. She does make you work, but this is college, and you're expected to learn, not just sail through a course with an "easy A." She knows what she is talking about and is always willing to help. I would take her class again.
Pr. Persky is genuinely interested in the betterment of her students--friendly, passionate, silly--some ppl even started calling her 'mom'. She is a fair grader & is available if you need help. Recommended.
Labs are easy but her lectures are something else! She isn't very good at explaining. Yes she knows the subjest but because she knows it so well she doesn't know how to explain things in simple terms. She speaks in hard lingo or exactly what the book said which isn't helpful, I can read the book but what I needed was someone to break it down for me
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER, she is not helpful at all when you go to her.
I had Persky for Micro and I really enjoyed her class. Yes the class was challenging (it is Microbio, I would be surprised if it wasn't!). Persky is really passionate about bio and knows the subject well. Her teaching style is refreshing-- she will lecture one day, have group learning another, and uses interesting videos to explain concepts.
The class starts with 24 students but don't be surprised when it ends with most likely 15 -16 students. Tests are hard, strictly from the textbook. If you are good at individual studying you may take her but dedicate yourself to the course if you want an A.
She knows the subject but she doesn't know to explain. Her lectures are shallow and test questions are from the book. She is nice but she doesn't know to teach. Do yourself a favor and pick somebody else.
This class is extremely difficult. Do not take it in the summer. Karen is a great teacher and she is passionate about microbiology. She is also helpful, you just need to make a appointment to see her. She is nice and wants to see her students do well. Tests are from the book and study guide. Also had to write a book report. Interesting class
DO NOT take this class in the summer if you have a job. It is extremely difficult and fast paced. You have a major exam every 8 days, at least. Karen is very passionate and knows everything about the subject, but she is not very good at explaining things. Many questions on the test come from left field. She doesnt help you unless u make an appt.
Dr. Persky loves microbio! To everyone who said that she was a terrible teacher and her exams are difficult, you must have not put in ANY time studying because her exams are extremely straight forward; If you put in the time to actually STUDY, you will do well in the class. It's micro, its not an easy topic in the first place.
Dr. Persky is a great teacher! She is very passionate about microbiology. Her tests are very fair and you will do fine as long you you study. If you come to class and pay attention you will do fine. I took the class very early in the morning, and she can keep you awake!Take her if you really want to learn something!
Microbiology is very hard to begin with, especially that it requires no prerequisites. If you do not have any background in Biology at all, you will have a hard time, no matter who's teaching it. She is very passionate about teaching and the course itself. Very helpful and approchable. The topics are clearly outlined and the exams are reasonable.
DO NOT TAKE HER. Just don't. I read these reviews before registering too, and thought hey she's great! Exams are near impossible, and she makes you feel like you're stupid whenever you ask questions. Entire grade is exam-based,uses 3 hour lab days to do lecture the whole time, and 1 hour lecture days to do lab. Worst professor I've had. DONT DO IT.
Dr Persky is incredible. LOVE HER! Her tests are hard, but she is a fantastic teacher. She never makes you feel stupid for asking an INTELLIGENT question, and is very willing to meet after class to answer questions, or just to talk. Ask her about her day, she'll love you. I highly recommend her, I'm trying to find a class she teaches besides micro.
Micro is a hard subject to begin with. Persky takes an insanely hard subject and tries to make it a little more accessable. Her personality makes even the most boring subject matter a little more interesting. Lectures are jam-packed with information, but engaging. Be willing to study a LOT, and she will try to make it more understandable.
Alright, I'm laying down the truth here, this teacher seems friendly at first, but my god, I'm telling you half of these comments are fake, written by her daughter. Steer clear of her, please save yourself. I speak the truth, the whole truth. But I dare anyone to take her and disagree with this statement. That is all
Material is tough no doubt, you HAVE TO pay attention to understand or else you may become lost.If you do, make sure you make an appointment with her during her office hours she is always willing to help and will not let you leave until you fully get it. Need the book almost daily, labs are fun!Test are difficult, she tells you exactly whats on them
Microbiology is a hard subject. Over half the students dropped before the end of the semester. However, Dr. Persky is very fair, but hard. This was my favorite class because of the challenging content and the interesting labs. I would recommend taking this class IF you can stick it out and don't mind working hard.
Class is pretty solid. Material seemed difficult at first but became significantly easier as time goes on. Speaks clearly and distinctly, and always asks if anyone has questions post chapters in lecture. Class was exam and quiz heavy, and Dr. Persky was super helpful with review pre-exam time. Just make sure to study and you'll do fine.
STUDY and ATTENDANCE. Constantly doing labs so keep an accurate journal. Provides a brief outline of what will be on exams. Very fast paced, very knowledgeable and relates what is learned in class to everyday life. Will do essay questions of exams. Does not round grades! Based off points systems. Good teacher but a lot of work.
Micro is a very difficult class. From beginning of class she lets you know whats expected LISTEN TO HER. She really enjoys teaching the subject and tries to make you understand to the best of your ability. I worked my BUTT off just for my C but really enjoyed the class overall. Her tests are hard, but if you work hard you will pass.
Genuinely cares about her students and wants you to do well. Tests involve written short answers, which requires a very good understanding of the material. You will be studying hard for this class and doing lots of hmwrk. Persky is a great teacher and wonderful person and has a wealth of information to share with her students. Fascinating subject.
Woah is it a tough class! Tests are incredibly insane!!!! You must study and study hard to do good. She's an alright teacher. Just very overwhelming
Many long, online assignments. Book report and APA style paper required. Lab journal required of all the experiments done in class. Tests get progressively harder with more written essay type exams that require a very good command of the material. Many people drop this class. This is the "weeding out" class for the Nursing program.
Microbiology is a very tough class to start with, and school does not come very easy for me in the first place. After LISTENING to what was expected from me and doing ALL of my online hw, the class didn't seem too hard. She is available for office hours and wants everyone to succeed. If you have a question ask, but being willing to work.
Labs and lectures are reversed, almost all of the time is spent in lab. The lectures can be good, but she spends very little time on them. For all the lab work done there is no time to relate it to the book work. She says it should take us 30 minutes to do something which took days of learning to do. Right before the tests she changes everything!
Shes nice but she is a terrible instructor. During lectures she doesnt clearly over for the exams. She is very off topic as she goes over lectures. I would highly wouldnt take her.
Difficult course, but Prof. Persky is fair and has enthusiasm for this subject. Tests are very difficult at first, but seem to level off after midterms. First lab test is difficult . Final was not cumulative so that was great! 1 book review to do, 1 lab final exam and 4 lecture tests overall. Be prepared to work hard for your grade.
Doesn't have regard for students. Says things then changes what she wants. Insults students. Thinks this is the only class you have to pay attention to. 23 of the class drops. Turns off prospective students in the science fields. Don't waste your time or money.
She was a oaky teacher for the first 2 weeks, however this facade ended after the time you could get your money back. After that point she would be rude to the students and had impossible expectations. This class is a weeding out class. I would not recommend any micro teacher at COD. Don't waste your money go somewhere else.
The class really should NOT have a lecture final. And if it absolutely necessary to have one, it should be online just like the rest of unit exams. Those exams do not prepare you well for the final. Also it would have been nice to have review for the lab and lecture finals; I think that would have made me feel a lot more prepared for the exams.
Persky is very knowledgable of the subject. Take the hybrid format ONLY if you don't have time for the full in-person class. Hybrid class must go through all the lecture material on your own and take a large final over it. You have to really be on top of stuff to know what's going on in the class. In-person lab was good, but sometimes unorganized.
Dr. Persky is very knowledgeable. I start nursing in the fall and took this class over summer as hybrid. LOVED this format! Last lecture final is the hardest exam I have ever taken but there are so many assignments that my grade was so high, all I needed was a 35% to still get a B. I left this class considering majoring in micro. Brilliant teacher!
I worked my tail off but it was so worth it. The hybrid class was brilliant. I loved it because I hate sitting in class for long lectures. This way you only go to class 2 Days as opposed to 4 days in classroom version during the summer. I loved Dr. Persky! Very quick grader uploaded them to bb right away & lots of opportunities to raise your grade
I'd say avoid. The hybrid format was probably the only reason I passed. I had an A all along in the online portion of the class, but quickly dropped to a high low B in the last week due to the 2 final exams (over 300 ?s). I'm an awful test taker but I thought the set up terrible. Highly unorganized, slow grader, just no.
I took this class in hybrid format Spring, 2015. It'd been 15 yrs since I'd been in school and was worried that starting with Micro would be challenging. The class is tough but Persky is a great instructor! You have to put the time in to do the work and have to study, but I learned a lot and found it to be very applicable to nursing and real life.
She's an amazing teacher. I'd take class with her again.
This was the worst professor I've ever had. Called students out in class when they didn't know something, was rude to students. Almost ALL of the semester was lab, and lectures would be maybe 15 minutes at the end and very unorganized. Out of the 30 students at the beginning of the semester, 18 dropped, and 7 students total passed the class.
Karen is very knowledgeable. She is willing to help. I took hybrid class, and it was HARD. You have to do homework and discussion boards. But they are useful. Utilize time wisely. Tests are hard, unless you study a lot. But there is so much material. Relates it well to everyday life. Very helpful for me to take this class
I hate to say it, but shes an awful instructor! Im an A student who puts in a ton of effort into my classes, and I really struggled with her class. Shes unbelievably unorganized, she misguides you (flat out lies) when it comes to preparing for a test, and she snaps on students in front of the entire class. Choose another instructor, trust me!
Yes, this was the hardest class that I have ever taken and I take pride in my effort to get great grades. Persky is a very hard teacher but if you, YOU put in the time, work and effort, she will see that and reward you for it. This is not, I REPEAT IS NOT, a skate through class. you need to read a lot and study like crazy. She is a great professor.
Don't miss class. She came off as rude, but it's her personality so don't take it personally. She's passionate about microbio, but I personally didn't learn well from her. This is a weeder class, so it's hard. Be ready to put in work! I passed with a C, so this class dropped my gpa quite a bit.
Corky, funny, intelligent, challenging professor. This course is not easy but she made it fun and enjoyable. There will be a lot of reading and her test are hard. They consist of mostly fill in the blank question/short essay, which can be tough. If you see her during her office hours, she'll guide you on what is going to be covered on the test.
Took her but had to drop because her teaching style was difficult to understand. I thought at first it had to do with me. She came off as rude. I do admit she was extremely knowledgeable. Long story short, dropped her class, went with a diff professor and got an A.
Most of your grade is based off tests. Micro is a very hard class, and you need to put in the work to get a good grade. I found professor Persky to be all over the place with her teaching. The tests are fill in the blank and multiple choice. We had a test where 3 short answers were worth 50 points, and the test was worth a 100.
Dr Persky is a great professor. I loved her teaching style!! However her tests are extremely hard. She doesnt put anything on the tests that wasnt taught, but they are just very tricky questions. I would take her again. Micro is very hard and she breaks things down so we can understand them.
Need 1420 dont take it with her. Work is too challenging. The Nester material she uses is crap, has a high grading scale, tests crappy, she has no structure. Rushes thru experiments, tries to give you hope-so you wont drop, but will give you low grade, youd wish you had. Find a teacher where you would LEARN. Skip this one. Beautiful personality
DO NOT TAKE HER!! She is VERY VERY rude. First day of class she will say if you don't have any biology or chem background you are going to fail. She expects you to memorize a lot of charts. If you don't learn by teaching yourself this is not a class for you. WORST professor I have ever had during my college experience.
Persky is one of the most challenging professors. She really makes you work for your grade. Microbiology is not easy and you really have to put in the work to get the grade you want. Sometimes, she seems rude and frustrated that her students are failing their tests but she will not curve them. Learning is done on the individual basis. hard class!!!
I would not recommend professor Persky. C badly affected my grade point average since I had only A's and B's , I have received C in her class. I have spent many hours studying microbiology. Tests are extremely hard. She takes points off for misspelling (1 misspelled word - minus one point. ) Lab journal must be submitted before taking final lab.
She's very passionate & understanding but also particular. Know APA format, & be sure to work ahead! About half of all our reading assignments & discussion boards were due in the last 4 weeks of class, plus 3 huge exams, & 2 big projects. The computer-generated tests are truly horrible quality & nearly impossible to do well on. NO extra credit!
Gets side tracked and doesn't give you enough time to finish your labs. I waited a month for her to view my journal and she never did. Very understanding and great teacher, just don't ask questions until after or the lecture wont get finished on time bc she has stories.
Persky is by far the hardest professor i have ever had. Her exams are mostly fill in the blank and shes very unorganized. Waits until the last minute to do things. Do not take her. She ruined my gpa forever.
DO NOT take this prof. I ended the semester with a 79.86 and she would not move my grade up. Shes very tough, she makes her own exams which are majority fill in the blank with no word bank. She gets side tracked too easily and you must memorize a lot of charts.
Do not take this instructor. If I would have stayed my GPA would be ruined. Do yourself a favor and DO NOT take her. She does not care if you pass. Very tough grader. Too much to memorize. Tests on material we had not gone over. If you learn by teaching yourself this class is for you. By far worst professor I had. Spare your GPA take someone nice.
Not a good choice. She expects all her students to know everything about Microbiology. Takes off points for spelling and for asking help. Students are hear to learn and do well in their future. Not to struggle just to pass. She is very lazy and rude to students. Do not take someone like her.
This professor is no help at all! She told a student in our class to get lost when she asked her for help. Dr. Persky is lazy and takes months to grade the tests and quizzes. She eats her lunch in class and makes us do worksheets that she never looks at.
Terrible instructor
Worst professor on campus! I took her two semesters in a row and failed both times! Take someone else!
Wastes time talking about her personal life. Gives ws that she does not even go over. Eats during lab. Tests on material not gone over. Takes points off for asking help. Terrible choice.
Professor P is unfortunately the worst professor on campus. She gives pop quizzes, her tests are very hard and she gives no extra credit. She is inaccessible outside of class and once told a students who needed help to get lost. She won't let you keep your backpack by lab tables but she eats her lunch on the lab tables. Take someone else or fail!!!
Never take her! Unless you are good at studying on your own. She does not like helping students, takes points off for asking help, does not know how to teach, goes on tangents, comprehensive lab final, tests are difficult, and more. I have taken harder classes and got an A. She ruined my GPA. Trust me.
Terrible. DO NOT TAKE! YOU WILL REGRET IT. Very tough and does not care for students. MC exams have more than 5 answer choices, answer choices repeat BEWARE. Study guides are of NO HELP. You are better off studying on your own from the book. Do yourself a favor and DO NOT TAKE HER!!! Biggest mistake I made.
Does not know how to teach. The other reviews can fill you in.
Karen Persky is the worst professor I have ever taken. She does not care about her students and she is rude and disorganized!
I would highly recommend you take someone else. She gives way too many tests and they are very hard. Almost everyone fails her class and she does not seem to care.
If you ask questions you get on her bad side. One kid from my class asked her something and she just ignored him. She claims well if you did the reading you would answer your own question. I mean come on. We are here to learn.
A very rude professor has no respect for students. I feel like she has the mentality that all her students are just taking her class. She gives to much work, yes college is a lot of work but with her, it's beyond that and is very unorganized Does not know how to time manage. I can go on but I rather not
I failed her final today and I am an A-B student. Take someone else!
Would not recommend taking her she is rude and not helpful at all and doesn't round grades!
DO not take her! She does not care if you pass or not. In fact she makes class as hard as possible. She teaches micro at a graduate course level even that is a stretch. Test are nothing like the lectures she gives. Her powerpoints are 2 sentences a slide. She eats during lab.
I dropped this class about 3-4 weeks in because every time I asked to meet outside of class she dodged me, she was never willing to help and when giving lectures she spent about 25 minutes just getting the projector on and talking about something totally irrelevant, she got off topic a lot, I wish I dropped out sooner for a full refund.
I completely disagree with the negative feedback listed below. I loved this professor. This is a TOUGH class and it requires preparation, note taking and staying on top of what is assigned and what it due. You can easily get behind if you don't keep your lab reports up to date and simultaneously prepare for next lecture. This is college!
Do not take Karen! Class is very difficult. She is a very tough grader. She expects too much from her students. I am a straight A student in all advanced classes. I have taken very difficult chemistry and Bio courses. Yet her class is beyond anything I have learned. She does not know how to teach. DO NOT TAKE HER.
For some reason her exams are nothing like the study guides she gives. Her power points are a few words a slide. Exams have more than 4 answer choices and matching has repeating answers. I feel class is so disorganized and your better off studying from the book. I gave her a chance despite all the reviews. Big MISTAKE. Learn from my Mistake.
This class was really challenging but material is interesting. You will feel invested in this class and will learn tons. Prof Persky is always willing to help.
This class can be difficult at time but isnt every class. She very genuine and always trys her best to help the students. She also has study guides that are very helpful for the exams. Also since we have been dealing with going to online classes she is the one teacher who has been up her game, always updating us. Just do the work and youll pass!
She is a very disorganized professor, by far my worst yet. Her office hours aren't indicative of where or when she will be available. Persky, often goes on long tangents about her life and other meaningless subjects, be ready to teach yourself. Also the study guides she posts are very inaccurate.
Karen is a great professor. I have to say I think people with negative reviews did not put in the work. This is not by any means an easy class.. you MUST read every week and keep up with studies or you will not pass. Karen is very passionate about what she teaches, and is always there for any help you may need!
Professor Persky is one of the best science professors I have had within my experience at COD. If you are going into the medical field, I highly recommend you take her course. She will teach you lessons that you may take away and apply both within her class and within your future career. I would definitely take her class again if I could.
One of the best/nicest professors I've had. She wants her students to be successful and tries her very best to make that happen. The class/subject IS hard, so YOU have to put in the work to earn the grade. She is funny, kind, and teaches the material efficiently and in detail to help you LEARN the subject. She's a very dedicated teacher. THE BEST!
This was one of the worst professors Ive ever had to work with. She would assign homework assignments that took 2-3 hours to do for only 5 points and there would be multiple due on 1 day. She assigned a book to read and 2 papers... for a science class! Discussion posts would easily take another 2-3 hours to complete. Was a waste of my time.
I do not recommend taking her class. It is a very hard class as it is and she will also give you 2 papers to write but will not give you clear instructions on how to do so. Be prepared to teach yourself in this class because she does not, even though I am taking it online. I do not think she does a great job, but everyone has a different experience
Please do NOT take this professors Persky class. Her tests are 35 minutes for 50 questions. You hardly read the test questions as some are 4 sentences ling with 5 possible answers. Her tests are not passable. Her homework assignment take 2-3 hours to complete for only 5-6 points. No study guides whatsoever, read everything from the book Lord!
I took microbiology online, it was horrible. The professor barely did any lectures, it was on you to teach yourself and learn the material. Out of 16 weeks, there were maybe 3 lectures. I would study for days for the tests and the best I got was a C. there was an aid that hosted study sessions, that saved me. do not recommend this teacher for micro
Save yourself from taking this professor. I studied extremely hard for every one of my tests and the best I would get is a low C. LONG discussion boards that are worth 3/10 points MAX. TOUGH grader.
If I can give her a 0 rating, I definitely would. My GPA has suffered immensely from this class. It's a difficult class, I get it, but it shouldn't be almost impossible to do. PLEASE listen to the reviews. I took her because I had no other option. Learn from my mistakes.
Just finished dropping this class. Best decision so far in my college career. Tests are almost not passable! No extra credit and no rounding
Tests are hard to get a good grade on, has you write a book report, this isnt english class but okay, online assignments are 2 hours to do and no way to make up for lost points, no late work accepted. Discussion boards every week worth up to like 5 points and take anywhere from 2-4 hours to do. Gotta retake this class now-different prof of course
Dr Persky was AMAZING!! I loved her class. She was so helpful and the class was enjoyable. She made things easy to understand and gave you every opportunity to learn. If you dont want to work, then you wont pass. Tests were all on covered material and the forums were a great chance to talk about ideas. I wish I could give her a 10.
I had a great experience with related current events tucked in, taught by someone who clearly is passionate about micro. Stay ahead because you can get behind in the lab manual/book because they are easy to put off. To get an easy A in any science - read before it is taught in class, and use class as a way to learn the advanced things you missed.
Profesor Perskey was always able to explain and help when concepts were hard to understand. The way she designed the class and all the information provided helped people like me with limited biology background to understand the class. I would encourage my children to take her classes because she is very knowledgeable.
Do not take. She does not know how to teach.
She told me I should drop the course to make it easier for myself seeing I'm going to receive an F anyway. Forces you to buy a lab book that she co-authored, which I never opened, voiced her opinion about the vaccines and pandemic but never had the empathy to be kind to her students or understand why they're struggling. Worst professor I had.
Professor Persky is an amazing professor. She always takes time to help students and give upbuilding feedback. She never discourages anyone for getting a question wrongshe instead comes alongside you and helps you grow and better understand the concept. If you are willing to engage, she is abundantly willing to help you with anything at all. 10/10
Professor Persky knows what she is teaching, and knows it's hard. She recommends biology background which I do not have. She met and emailed with me several times and was very helpful. The tests are hard because she makes you really know the topic and asks involved questions. Lab exams were easy for me - unit ones were not. You get what you put in.
Tough tests, no study guide. She said that most of the ?s are analytical (because that's how med. school is, even though we aren't all planning that). Terrible philosophy for an" into to" class. Some concepts were brand new to me. But, if you do all the work on-time, you're likely to get 100% on that, so can basically fail every test & still pass.
She only taught three lectures the entire course. I put in about six hours a day the entire course. No study guides. Tests are different than material studied. She is responds promptly to emails and calls by recommending you drop the course to avoid failing. Offers no tangible help. The best I did on a test was a C while failing the rest.
Do not take her class. She does not know how to TEACH. She sends a lot of emails that are confusing. When you ask for help she tells you to read the syllabus again. There are 3 separate due date schedules. All assignments are due 48 hours prior to the due date. Riddle me that! She will make you buy a lab she co-author that you do not need.
Do not take her class. I would go so far as to say, if she's the last spot left, WAIT. We had discussion boards due every month, they took anywhere from 3/4 hours to complete, useless info. lectures are optional, non informational, she rants off topic. I dropped her class with an A. i'm honor student, this class is..bad.
She gives too much and the assignments are worth very little points and take a ton of time to complete. She uses McGraw-Hill for assignments and there is no way that I have ever found to go back and see the concepts that were studied to have as a study guide. I would never recommend her to any student who doesn't want to be consumed in homework.
One of my favorite science teachers. Gave the appropriate amount of homework since microbiology, and science in general, are very hard courses which demand a lot of time and attention in order to master them. Was understanding of student time schedules and situations, extending deadlines when appropriate. Very enthusiastic teacher who cares :)
Professor Persky is one of my favorite professors. Microbiology is a very difficult class in general, but if you put the work in it is less daunting. There are many assignments, but the homework points add up to give you a solid cushion for tests. The homework is mostly a completion grade, so it is difficult to fail if you complete them in detail.
way too difficult for what is supposed to be teaching you a foundation. so much so that I walked away with minimal new knowledge or understanding because of how baseless the tests were compared to the resources you had to study. overwhelming. very smart woman but was not the teacher for me or my goals. just save yourself and your GPA :(
All you need to do is complete your homework and discussions on time. She is a very smart professor and the access to the reading materials are very interesting and helpful if you take the time to read/study them. I struggled balancing this course as a summer class but would take it during school year. She always gave help when it was needed.
This class was difficult for me and Professor Persky challenged me to think in new ways and try new study methods. Persky is not only a very intelligent woman but she is also very caring and went out of her way numerous times to help me succeed. Most points come from homework completion so if you maintain that and test scores you should do well!
Exams were fair, straightforward (simpler than the textbook), and only worth about half of the overall grade in the course. An A is definitely attainable on every exam if you study. Most of the labs, discussion forums, and assignments are free points if completed well. Easy A with effort.
Dr. Persky set clear expectations regarding the course workload: the expectation is that students study on a daily basis. Her pre-recorded lectures helped supplement the course material, and she was available to meet outside of scheduled meetings. I would recommend her without reservation to motivated students who are interested in microbiology.
Failed the first test and she asks us to spend 3 hours on a 5pt discussion post. Shows how the class is going for me... She provides 0 study guides and the units are out of order so what the tests are going to be on is unclear. She's a nice lady and passionate about science, but an awful professor. Avoid if possible.
Tests are not closely related to general content of book or lectures.
She makes the course extremely hard to do for no reason. For her online course, she doesn't do lectures you have to read the book and do SmartBook Learning to know what is even going on in the class. She had us complete discussion questions that only 3pts and she wanted us to spend 3hrs. TAKE THIS CLASS AT YOUR OWN RISK.
She wants you to memorize 3-4 chapters for a exam and give out NO STUDY GUIDE. NO GUIDANCE to what needs to be learned. she doesn't do lectures for her online course. For the Fall 2023 semester, there are no tutors for microbiology, so keep that in mind if you decide to take her course. She's a nice woman but she just can't teach AT ALL.
If you know how to teach yourself new information and, have good study habits then this is the perfect professor to have. If you need more guidance when it comes to learning new material I don't recommend her because you're not going to do as well as you think. Her teaching style is not for everyone and her class isn't easy.
Mrs.Persky is one my favorite professors at COD. She is passionate about her classes, gives instructions in detailed, cares about her students. I would love to retake her classes again!
The tests are challenging but if you read the chapters in detail you will be okay. For much of the homework, labs, and discussions, you get full points just for completing them. This means although the tests are challenging, by simply completing the other assignments half of your grade should be 100%.
Microbiology can be challenging, but with effort, it's manageable. The professor is knowledgeable, and the homework/labs are mostly completion-based. Utilizing resources like Unstuckstudy alongside the textbook can help prepare for the tests.
Nice lady but wouldn't recommend this class at all. Gives us discussion posts that are 4 points but take 3 hours or more to complete. Doesn't give any study guides for tests or any guidance. Im taking an online course but I'd still appreciate a short lecture video here and there. Tells us to read 300 book pages every week.
Professor P was awesome - you just have to be ready and willing to do the work! Assignments are time consuming but very clear cut, and prepared you directly for the material. I enjoyed that Professor P was very responsive, accessible and supportive as an instructor even in an asynchronous, online format.
Don't be fooled by her rating. Persky doesn't give ANY clear instructions. Loves to say one thing then do the other. Because it was hybrid, she wouldn't answer questions about lectures in class (it was 3 hrs long). In labs, she rather us mess up an experiment than guide us to do it correctly the first time. I absolutely do NOT recommend her.
I'm grateful to have Professor Persky for MICRO1420. She's incredibly knowledgeable, supportive, and provides detailed, constructive feedback on my every discussion posts! Her engaging teaching style makes learning enjoyable, and also she provide us the clear course schedule in starting which helped me stay organized. A great learning experience!
Professor Karen Persky is an exceptional Professor for Micro 1420. She is incredibly knowledgeable, supportive, and always available to help. Her detailed feedback on my every discussion board post makes learning engaging and informative. The course schedule provided at the start was invaluable for staying organized. A great learning experience!
Professor Persky truly cares about her students' success. While Microbiology is challenging, she provides all the resources needed to succeed if you put in the effort to study and engage with the material. She's very supportive and even wrote me letters of recommendation for nursing school. Highly recommend her class!
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE AT ALL. HELP!! She is a nice lady; however, she doesn't help at all. Her homework assignments take forever, and she doesn't give you any resources. This was the worst class I've ever taken because I was doing useless homework the entire time. The work does not relate to the exam. Again, DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE. RUN FAR AWAY
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. She provides no study guides/outlines, no office hours, and she'd rather you mess up your lab experiments than offer any assistance (verbatim). Choose someone else, do not trust the positive reviews for micro.
just dont take her. listen to what everyone else here says. shell give you blackboard things to do that take you 3 hours minimum not including responses to your classmates. she doesnt give you anything to help you review for your exams, the lecture is entirely different than what shows up on your exam. just horrible and the projects are even worse.
Super kind professor. Ignore the negative reviews. Hybrid lectures were harder online, but labs were great. You can still get a solid B with low lecture test scores if you finish every assignment and discussion. Lab midterm and final matter. McGraw Hill is definitely long and lengthy. Overall she's very very caring and truly wants the best for you!
300 pgs of reading per week as one stated here is not true. Take negative reviews w/ a pinch of salt. Yes, Microbio takes time & there is a bit of homework, but it's for good reason -- to help counter if you get a bad grade on a test(s). Dr. Persky clearly cares & is accessible. Show up, ask questions, read, do the work, and you'll be okay.
She is a kind and understanding person. She looked out for me and went above and beyond. The material is hard, but she knows that and does her best to aid you.
