Very useful if you take the lab with her.
She's not very clear, and doesn't follow her notes.
I hate bio, but got a lot of value out of that class. The way I see it, taking bio is gonna be a **** if you don't enjoy it. But i'm glad i took it with her. She's not easy, but extremely caring if she sees that you're trying. Never give up and she'll never give up on you.
she jumps from one subject to the next pretty quick. she doesn't follow by the textbook so it can get a bit confusing. her tests are kind of hard! she likes to throw in a couple of problsm on small issues that she spent only a minute on.
She's very nice and wants you to succeed; i missed the first two/three weeks of class & consequently the 1st exam and she let me take a make-up exam towards the end of the quarter in order to raise my grade.
Too much crap to do on the side. She gives random pop quizzes, makes you do epost and print out about a million pages of notes in pdf that are really small, on top of that you're suppose to be reading the text which doesn't apply entirely to the class.
I loved the class but if you are not good at multiple choice tests, this class is not for you, take it with a different prof! She is an interesting lecturer though.
Very valuable course, yet very challenging. Thought she lectured well. One of my favorite classes to date.
It is important to attend lecture and pay attention. She likes to test on some details that might not seem important... but she tries to make the class interesting.
interested in what student has to say, but picks the worst TA's
Best Prof I had in Biology department. Expects a lot, but is willing to help if you show you care.
Great teacher, interesting classes and she gives many opportunities to do well. Classes are not easy but are relevant outside of classroom in biology/health care fields.
Karen is an awsome teacher. The class can be a bit challenging because it covers lots of materials and moves fast, but Karen will give you many apportunities to get it all together (including many practice tests!).
Dr. Karen Peterson should not be teaching! Her slides are scattered and too full for comprehension. Her lectures are difficult to follow and she is so unhelpful with questions that it is academic suicide to try and ask her for help. I ADVISE THAT YOU DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS FROM HER.
I loved this professor AND her class. I bombed bio 180 but aced her class if that tells you anything. Sure it may involve a bit more work than rocks for jocks, but it's really not THAT difficult. Make sure to go to class, pay attention, and do her practice exams and you'll be fine.
very GREAT! teacher!! she really cares about how well students understand material and makes lectures really interesting!
She is very nice and enthusiastic, but talks very fast and is often scattered. I enjoyed the content of the class but had to study A LOT just to pull above a 3.0. I would not recommend this unless your major requires it. Don't skip class either; the power points she creates are impossible to understand otherwise.
Her slides aren't that great-- I wish she explained things better. I'm a visual person but sometimes she goes to fast and I feel confused afterwards, however there is help offered and you have to keep up because everyday there's reading, however her stuff is podcasted and the textbook is good.
Her lectures are interesting, but they contain a lot of material. I really like her analogies in class for the different concepts that we learn. However, this is a very difficult class to 4.0, and it isn't curved, so beware.
I LOVE this class. The professor does a good job at explaining the concepts and provides plenty of previous exams to study for. The class requires hours of studying and I had to review the material everyday to keep up with all of the information. Make you sure attend lecture everyday and don't buy the textbook.
A lot of material to review and study everyday, however, I learned a lot in this class. Straightforward exam questions, unlike Bilgen's. No need for textbook.
Study hard and you should do well. The class covers a lot of material, but she is a really good lecturer. The labs are really useful too, but the book not so much.
great teacher, but a little difficult so study hard. Make sure you attend class
Dr. Petersen was a GREAT professor. She actually cares about how you do, and gives you every oppurtunity to succeed. Sure, you have to study quite a bit for the tests, but she gives you practice exams that consistently have verbatim questions on current tests. I highly recommend this class!
Hard to understand and follow is an understatement. I try to take notes, but end up just becoming confused due to the scattered nature of her lectures. I learned more from my high school physiology class and it is hard to connect her lectures to the exams for studying. Your best bet is to review old exams if you have to take this class from her.
She is a very nice, warm lady who is a natural lecturer and really does know her stuff. Definitely going to want to read up on the textbook and study her old tests. Some questions are reused. Material was a bit tough seeing as she really really likes to use confusing charts and graphs in her test questions and quizzes. Study up!
Horrible. Lecture slides contain very few facts but rather have a series of questions you must try to answer via what she says and put into your notes accurately. For a class where clear facts are essential, this caused me to miss points on exams simply because I didn't have the info in my notes! She also explains concepts in a poor, convoluted way
Lectures like she has ADD. Nothing relates or makes sense. And I have recurring nightmares of concept maps and flowcharts. Have never been so pissed off at a ridiculous pre-req. in my life.
The class is curved in a way that makes it easy to get a 3.0 but hard to get a 4.0. She likes throw "trick" questions and confusing graphs on tests...so don't expect to get an A on a midterm without studying. Also, attendence is pretty much mandatory for anyone who wants to get a good grade. I averaged 92% on all tests (w/final) and got a 3.8.
Study the questions in the back of the lecture slides and do the practice tests - you'll do fine.
could not make her opinions more obvious or obnoxious. uses her authority as a lecturer to inject her sentiments-sweeping generalizations about scientific research/data, etc. read the book to learn the material, but she will basically test straight from her lectures. a lot of info, so clue can be helpful. concept maps are not helpful.
I really did not like this class. Attendance is mandatory if you want a decent grade. She has slides that she puts up and you need to fill in the blanks while listening to her explanation which makes things very difficult when she has 8 things you need to fill in on a complicated subject. I do not recommend her. The textbook was very vague.
I really enjoyed this class and felt I got a lot of interesting and relevant information out of it. The key to success is going through the review questions at the end of each slide show, taking notes on what she says in class, and taking practice exams. Just as a FYI, this class requires STUDYING!
No homework, just tests. Show up to class and study what she teaches in class and you will do fine.
Great teacher! Just go to lectures and pay attention to the powerpoint and you'll do fine.
You honestly do not need the textbook for her class. As long as you show up to lecture, take notes, and study the review questions she has at the end of each lecture, you'll be fine. That's all I've done, and I average a 94 on her exams.
Very helpful and understanding when it comes to missing an exam due to emergency. Exams are only on materials on the slides and attendance is mandatory. The bad thing I can think about is that it is sometimes difficult to write down what she's talking about and stuff on the slides at the same time. Overall, a very nice class and good intro to bio.
I really like the class content, her accent is annoying though! Make sure you go to class because she has clicker questions EVERYDAY! Exams are fair just study the questions at the end of the lecture slides. Didn't open my book once, got a test average of 94%.
Bio 118 can be a tough class, but if you show up to lecture, attend a few review sessions, you should be fine. Karen is a GREAT teacher and overall person who really cares about her students. Sit in the front row and she will get to know your name!
Really nice professor who honestly cares about her students and whether or not they learn. That being said, she's not the best of lecturers; it's hard to follow along when she doesn't transition well into concepts. Video screencasting saved me. She offers lots of resources like past exams and study sessions to ensure your success in the class.
I thought the lectures were very poorly done. I did just fine in her class- I kept up with lectures did some (not much since it wasn't really necessary) reading from the book, and did well on the tests. But she made the material much harder than it should have been. Biology is NOT that hard, but the way she teaches it, it makes it seem like it is.
Bought the book, thinking I would need it but turns out I hardly opened the book. She does clicker questions everyday. I printed out her slides so it was somewhat easier to follow her during lecture. However, it is easy to get lost during her lecture -- make sure you review slides over and over. CLUE helped for the exams.
Attend lecture/lab. You get points which later add up just for attendance/participation. Study the lecture notes carefully, exams are heavy on graphs/graph interpretation so memorization won't help, know the concepts!
She is awful. Just plain awful.
She makes biology so much more confusing than it actually is. Her slides are formatted with questions, which she NEVER answers fully. Her analogies to help you understand concepts actually HINDER your learning. She assumes we want to know about her weight issues. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS FROM HER. bio is a really easy subject, IF TAUGHT CORRECTLY.
While Prof. Petersen is an extremely nice person, her lectures leave a lot to be desired. I found her to be super confusing at times and had difficulties keeping up with the material. When I asked her questions, her responses were overly complicated. I would not recommend this class to people who have taken little or no science classes.
I had no interest in taking the class but because of her I want to major in bio. Lectures are online, but she has (easy) clickers. Just study/rewatch what you dont get. Did this and got a 3.5. No curve, but lowest test dropped/no cumulative final. DONT GET THE BOOK. Useless, didn't open it once. Otherwise, highly recommended.
I didn't like this class b/c of its subject. She is not hard but her class is time-consuming. The subject is very boring but I promise you if you have taken bio 401, you'll see that there is not much of concept you need to know for this class.
the class was ok but a very crappy teacher... b/c she knows some general info about birds and animals doesn't make her smart... She is a stupid teacher who stuffed her brain with stupid general info about birds and animals... I think she got away by memorizing these stupid useless info... She is no smarty...
Classes are very time consuming, but if you keep up with the material, you'll find the class extremely fun! Opened a whole other world about vertebrate biology for me, and I thought I knew much about that world already!
I strongly recommend from taking this class from TOLGA because you can actually understand his lectures, unlike petersen's. Her lectures are VERY confusing and says the wrong things time to time. She asks you to study unnecessary subjects that will waste your time. She constantly talks of her body, atleast five times per lecture. NOT needed.

Take this class if you hate yourself. If you have a strong foundation in Biology you might be ok, for the rest of us, look forward to incomprehensible jargon and overly busy power point slides that ask questions but offer no answer. Painful to say the least.
Those people are mean!! Ms Petersen is a REALLY NICE TEACHER! Sometimes I admit it's a little bit hard but it's College biology, you can't expect it to be easy! Of course you need some background for it. She is very interesting, funny and nice, and she explain things very well mostly. (Sometimes she uses confusing graphics)
Terrible teacher. Slides are useless, this class requires WAY more studying and even then there's no chance of getting a 4.0. She is more confusing than anything, I learned most things from the web and studying outside of class.
Karen is a really sweet teacher and really loves what she does and puts a lot of time and effort into her students. That being said, this was the worst class I've ever taken. It's all blank memorization of hundreds of facts and the course load is like like taking an 8 credit class, not a 5 credit. She LOVES busy work. Don't take this class. Ever!
Prof. definitely knew what she was talking about but material was pretty boring. Lecture slides were confusing and unhelpful. There are 4 midterms and a non-cumulative final + clicker questions. Peterson is a really sweet person but the class was much more difficult than it should have been.
Petersen is a really nice person but a bad prof. Her explanations were never clear and her slides were terribly complicated. I had to do all the learning practically by myself. If you don't have to take this class, don't take it.
Like everybody else says, nice but not very clear with her lectures. also, i detest clicker points. could have put a little more effort in. she will make you feel terrible for smoking though. never had such a judgmental teacher before. the psych teachers make no judgments about smoking / drug use.
Nobody who teaches intro to bio is good. Nothing is clear for tests. All self taugh. But once you get to higer level bio, Karen Peterson is amazing. Her lectures are straight to the point, just study all powerpoint. A lot of info to memorize, but super interesting all together. It is a lot of hard work even just for a 3.0. If you r lazy, don't take
Her powerpoint slides and exams give me a headache
Karen should teach high school instead of college. The course is focused on her instead of on biology. She gives a million little assignments and the class involves no student thought. You are asked to parrot back memorized information. She treats students with contempt and glares at students who arrive even a minute late.
This class was awesome! It was her first time teaching it so there was a bit of unorganization but I learned so much about the reproductive systems of many animals! Karen is an amazing teacher! She is sweet and always willing to help! I can't wait to take more classes from her.
Too many small details and she doesn't tell you what you need to know. If you've taken a biology class before you should be fine but if you havent itll be very difficult for you. Her slides and diagrams are confusing.
I took 3 years of biology in high school, thought this would be an understandable, manageable intro bio class. WRONG. Her lectures are extremely fast paced and confusing, difficult graphics and not nearly enough explanation. A great topic, but absolutely not a great teacher. Expect to teach yourself an ungodly amount of info all on your own.
Do not take this class. That is all you need to know. If you are looking for an simple science class to satisfy a requirement or pre-req, this is not for you. Lectures are extremely disorganized causing the tests to be extremely hard. Unless you have prior biology knowledge, I recommend you avoid taking this class with Karen Petersen at all costs.
If you've taken chem/bio before this may be easy. if not, you've got a ton of catching up. book has tons of small details, she doesn't specify which you need to know. she lectures as if you know all the background info already and goes fast. for a 100 level class, way too much info . hardest class i've taken at uw and im a senior. TOO MUCH DETAIL
Everything that people are saying about the fall 2015 quarter is True!!!! She is a very nice teacher, but the lectures are incredibly disorganised and extraordinarily fast. And then the graphs are even worse, in class and on tests!
I'm in the class now and everyone posting negative things, I hear you, but you're all studying wrong. I went from a 78 to a 94 when I realized how to study for the tests. Her lectures are confusing but just rewatch them while answering all her review questions at the end of each powerpoint. Those literally tell you the exact questions on the test.
I have a very limited biology background and I generally dislike science/math. You really don't have to know the concepts in depth. It just appears that way in lecture because she jumps straight in without explaining anything. But if you just memorize the things she emphasizes, you can do well. The tests could honestly be way harder.
Yes, you have to work for your grade in this class. And if you don't have a bio background, you will have to learn and teach yourself a lot. Her slides aren't always helpful and she isn't very clear at times. However, her tests are very manageable and you will get a good grade if you do all of the review questions.
Karen realizes that many students do not have a biology background and she holds five review sessions per week. She care's about every student. The lectures do move really fast, but if you re-watch them after and answer the review questions, the tests are manageable. She is also hilarious, and makes going to a 9:30 class more fun.
This class is tough, but honestly once I started watching the lectures over after class, everything became so much easier. Petersen is so funny and she cares about every student, enough to learn a ton of names. She does call on people in class, which can be scary but I love how enthusiastic she is about physiology. Plus, clicker questions are easy.
You will feel extremely lost/overwhelmed at first but don't get discouraged! Put in the time to rewatch her lectures and do her review questions and things will become pretty clear. There are certainly things Karen could do to make this class easier, but it's reasonable if you're willing to put in the effort.
It's not really an intro class, she just talks about terminology with no introduction. Be prepared to just accept what she tells you and remember what it does. Ignore the assigned reading, it doesn't help. Her explanations over complicate simple concepts, her TAs are much better at explaining. I regret taking this class. Boring and confusing
Difficult class. Lectures were short but full of information, and lots of outside work was required to do well in the class. Petersen's teaching style did not do much to engage me in the material. Peer instructors were helpful.
If you're expecting this to be an easy intro class, don't take it. You need to put in effort to succeed, but it is manageable if you do it right. Focus on the points Karen stresses in lecture and DO ALL HER REVIEW QUESTIONS for each lecture; those are crucial. Take all the practice tests as well and you will do fine.
HALLELUJAH! WE ARE DONE!!! This class took up so much of my life this quarter and left me discouraged many times; however, I pulled through and you can too! The light is at the end of the tunnel if you're willing to work to reach it, folks.
She didn't curve the grade.
She is an amazing professor! He class might seem intimidating at first but once you understand the way she writes her tests, then it is a piece of cake! Make sure you do the review questions and study the past exams. A lot of her questions uses the same concepts from past exams. I studied the day before each exam and always scored above a 92.
Dr. Petersen is an amazingly intelligent professor. She blazes through her lecture slides but it's because she wants you to learn a lot! She actually cares about you and is interested in your questions and feedback. Also, if you get the chance, just go and talk with Dr. Petersen, you're sure to walk away much smarter and in higher spirits!
Please please please take this class if you just the enemy of yourself or you just so much hate yourself and you just want to screw up your college life for a quarter. The professor talks quickly and tests about those things deeply that she just mentioned in five words in the lecture. It is so hard to understand what she is really talking about.
I'm averaging above 90% on every test but that's not because she taught me anything, it's because I read the book. Their lectures aren't structured well and most of the time you're supposed to "turn to your neighbor to discuss" instead of actually learning. Study sessions OUTSIDE of class get counted to your participation grade too.
Mrs. Petersen is such a wonderful person and is really invested in helping her students learn. She leads review sessions herself and really puts in a lot of work. Sometimes her lectures can be hard to follow but if you have a question put it on the discussion board and the next day she will answer it.
Don't buy the textbook, it helps but you DONT NEED IT. The exams depend on the lectures' review questions and the textbook goes way more in depth than necessary. Answer all the review questions and study for the exams and you'll be fine! Go to class, you have to answer poll questions for participation. If you stay on top of things, you'll be good!
Don't bother buying the book. I bought the book for her 118 class and I opened it maybe twice the whole quarter. All the material on her tests are in her lectures. You just have to watch her lectures again and take thorough notes. Karen is a professor that does know what she is talking about and does care about students.
I don't know why people complain about her? Just re-watch her lectures while doing the review questions and you'll do great. I did this and never got below a 94 on a test. Don't buy the textbook, you don't need it!
She was very scattered and most of her lectured did not flow. Her exams were tricky and the average was around a 70 on each test. Would not recommend her at all.
Biol452 is VERY DIFFICULT and time consuming. It's only 5 credits but I spend as much time as a 15 credit class. You have to get 95% for a 4.0, but on our last test, the highest score was 90.5, which tells you how hard it is. Weekly lab quizzes when you have to memorize minute details about 20 similar species and phylogenies. Take an easier class
Knows the subject well and seems like a nice person however has no idea how to teach. Lectures sporadically spew out info out of order. If you aren't a 100% visual learner you're screwed. Uses just pictures for EVERYTHING, can't verbally explain processes at all. I only did well by doing end of lecture questions daily and studying a stupid amount.
Awesome material and good professor. I like the way she uses a lot of pictures in her slides. The people complaining about her are the ones who only use her material to study. To succeed in this class you need to look at animations online to really understand/visualize what is going on in the body. Otherwise, you'll have no clue what she's saying.
Her sides do not give info, have to re-watch all of the lectures and teach yourself the book to pass tests.
Dr. Petersen was a great professor and gave great lectures. She always gave access to the slides, and gave you lots of review questions about what you need to know for the test. She is very invested in helping students, and was always so kind when I went in to ask her a question. The material was very interesting. It's hard work but it's worth it.
This class was a general pain, the course material was interesting but Dr. Petersen was often incapable of effectively teaching it, despite her enthusiasm. Tests cover details she barely brushed over in lecture and questions are at times poorly phrased (which she gets defensive about). Expect to be teaching yourself the majority of the material.
Her tests are hard if you don't pay attention to the little details she mentions in class. Tests are mostly doable but some questions are kinda random (can't really study for it). Her lecture questions at the end of each lecture are helpful to review for the tests.
Professor Petersen barely writes anything on her slides, it's mostly pictures. This means you really have to listen to what shes saying or you won't understand what's happening. The end of the lecture questions really help you understand the material. Also I bought the book, wasn't worth it.
This class is an easy 3.5+. Show up and actually listen for 50 min (shocking!), her clicker questions are usually very easy, described in detail, and word for word what she said 30 seconds before. All lectures can be watched again on Panopto. Dont use book- all test questions are said in lecture. She teaches BASICS, doesnt complicate anything.
Dr. Peterson is a wonderful professor. Physiology was a tough class, but she explains things very well and is always open to answering questions - she's also very approachable. One thing that bothered me is that the "required" textbook is NOT NECESSARY - don't get it! I used it maybe twice. Everything you need to know is said in lecture.
If you are not scientifically inclined, I do NOT recommend this class. The hardest class I have taken at UW by far. She is a good lecturer but gives far too much complicated material that it is almost impossible to keep up with.
Proff. Petersen wasn't the worse, but her tests are only on content from class. So be sure you know every single second of every single lecture. She has end of slide questions which are very helpful for studying as well as Piazza (an online site where you can ask her questions). Her tests often have content that is barely covered in the slides.
I loved her class, sure it is jammed pack full of information every lecture but as long as you rewatch her lectures and just listen carefully the tests are a breeze because they only cover what she talks about in class. Make sure you're consistently always keeping up with her lectures or the class will be difficult.
Dr. Petersen is incredibly passionate about physiology and it was apparent through her detailed lectures. She was very organized and clear about what you needed to do to succeed in class. She hosted numerous review sessions that were highly beneficial. You really have to work for your grade in this class but it's worth it in the end!
Dr. Petersens course was both one of the hardest and one of my favorite classes Ive taken at UW. Yes, the exams are difficult and there is a lot of material to learn, but the material is super interesting and the labs are actually pretty fun. Dr. Petersen is hands down one of my favorite lecturers at UW. If you work hard, the class is worth it.
No hierarchy to any lectures. One slide is one topic and the next slide is an entirely unrelated one. This class is very difficult if you have no previous bio experience, I find myself looking at biopsych notes from last year to make more sense of things.
Dr. Petersen seems like a nice person, but this class just did not work for me. It meets very day for 50 minutes and each day feels disconnected from the last one. She isn't the best at explaining things, she picks on random students in the audience for answers, and the grade is sadly composed of 60% tests (3), 20% PollEverywhere, and 20% final.
Professor Petersen is the best professor I have taken in college. She works hard to teach her students lecture material, hosts study sessions and office hours regularly and really does want students to succeed. If you come to lecture, are engaged, go to study sessions, and put in some time, the class is not hard at all.
I wouldn't recommend this class unless it's required for your major. Beware of: dont buy the textbook (exams based only on lecture), attend every class (PollEv questions graded on correctness), rewatch lectures on Panopto (she talks fast and slides only have diagrams), do the review questions everyday (dont get behind as exams are every 2 weeks).
Dr. Petersen is hands down one of the best professors. While the lectures are quick and full of a lot of information, Dr. Petersen works very hard for you to succeed. She hosts many office hours ands study sessions that she is present at. They are very helpful. Her tests are straightforward and if you put in the effort, you will succeed. Love her!!
I loved her! She uses fantastic analogies to explain what's happening in the class. I didn't find this class too challenging but there is an exam every other week so be prepared for that. She posts practice exams which are super helpful.
If you are interested in biology, this is the class for you. However, I can imagine this class being very difficult if you are in no way interested in biology. Exams are every 2 weeks, so it's best to make sure you are caught up with lectures every week. SHE IS AMAZING! She explained everything very well. Loved this class and the professor!
One of my favourite professors so far at UW. Her class can be difficult, but mostly it's just time consuming. But she offers a lot of resources (office hours+lots of past exams, etc), so it isn't too difficult to know what's expected. Overall a really interesting and fun class, lots of small assignments that can boost your grade as well.
Professor Petersen is very thorough but has no words on her slides, so if you miss anything you'll have to rewatch the lecture or ask a friend. It's easy to zone out during this class. PollEv questions are graded on correctness. You don't need to buy the book, tests are based around lecture. Answer the review questions everyday.
Dr. Petersen is such a wonderful Professor. Her enthusiasm for the material makes every lecture fun, and her love of animals and wildlife shows. This is one of the most enjoyable courses that I have taken at UW simply because she has such a great attitude. There is a lot of memorization, but plenty of class time to practice during lab.
I really love her!!! She comes to every study session where I thought only TAs would come! She always answers our questions online in a short time!!! And her lectures are really engaging and fun!!!! As long as you pay attention in class, you will get a good grade!!!
Karen is a great physiology teacher! Her ppts were mainly pictures, so attending class or watching panopto is a must if you want to understand the material. She was very accessible outside of class, so make sure to introduce yourself to her! The class is not curved, so she really emphasizes and cares about everyone getting a good grade.
She is super nice!! and her lectures are amazing. She also responds to piazza questions very fast.
Dr. Petersen is a very good teacher, and her lectures are very clear. Also, the study session she held is very helpful.
Dr. Petersen's lectures are very clear, and her study sessions are super helpful. I took it last year and it's really interesting.
Her tests are essentially based on her lectures so, the textbook isn't necessary. In fact, the textbook would be providing too much information compared to what she does. The tests then continue this trend by asking us questions that require more context than what was discussed in her lectures. She seems to focus on figures more then content.
Lectures are pre-recorded, so it really is up to the student to watch and learn. However, the problem was that the lectures did not connect to the exams. The exams were pretty difficult, lectures were pretty long and tiring, daily quizzes (that are easy but are unlike the exams?), and reflections to earn a few more points on past exams.
Dr. Peterson is an awesome professor and she's always passionate about delivering content to students! Her lectures are very detail throned and clearly explained. The captions are represented in the lectures accurately and on time. I enjoyed the journey with peers in studying her course. I would love to take Dr. Petersen's classes again.
Took 453 online, and asynchronous lectures were super important. No book, so all material is from lectures. Labs are long and hard. They require lots of study time outside of class. Overall I think this was a really hard class to transition to online, but Dr. Peterson did it well and the class was overall enjoyable. Tiny Science projects were fun.
if you work hard, you would get good grade
The class was manageable. What brought my grade down are exams, which asks about figures from research papers in relation to topics in the lecture, so practice analyzing figures. If you work hard, you'll get a good grade. Dr. Petersen is very responsive if you have questions and gives detailed feedback to your work. The class was fun!
Do NOT buy the textbook. Dr. Petersens exams are completely based off her lectures and although she does mention all the concepts that will be on the exam be prepared to teach yourself to understand them. I feel like she views some things as common knowledge that are completely foreign to a good portion of her students.
Prof. Petersen was an ok lecturer - she got her points across well enough, though lectures took forever to get through due to the amount of content. I took the class fall 2020 and exams frustrated me the most - they were hard to study for bc the Qs were pure graphs. Don't worry about getting the book - she says everything we need to know in lecture
She asks for feedback she doesn't want to take or act in accordance with. She doesn't want to change her ways, even if what is being asked of her to change is reasonable (like going thru content slower). It seems that she doesn't like people being blunt and honest with her - it seems to bother her. She's a nice lady but hard to work w/ as a prof.
Class is pretty easy if you already had some basic biology knowledge. Lecture slides are mostly picture & graphs, this helps with concepts. Mark down everything she says in lectures, exams are mostly based on it. If you are new to Biology, read the textbook before class. She bumped up everyone's grade cause the median score was lower than expected.
My first quarter at UW and I couldn't of been happier starting it off with Karen. It took me a little while to understand how professors work at UW and ended up getting a 70% on the first exam. However, lots of chances to bump your grade and even drops an exam! She gave me lots of resources like practice exams, handouts, etc.
For an intro level with no prereqs, this class is quite hard (unless you have prior Bio knowledge). 80% of your grade is just exams/final. Lectures are jam-packed and Dr. Petersen goes fast without making it clear which info. is important and which is not. The average on exams were not very good and she only gave everyone an extra 2% on the first 2
Karen is the WORST lecturer. She puts 0 words on her slides and her slides are not cohesive at all and she rambles without keeping a clear path of explanations. Her exams are much harder than the homework and she often adds stuff that are barely gone over in lectures.
Dont buy the textbook for this class because all of her tests are based off of her lectures. Her exams are way harder and its mostly on topics that she briefly talked about. 80% of your grade is exams scores and theres an exam every two weeks. Not only was this class hard, I felt unsafe in terms of COVID, especially on exam days.
Lectures are posted online, essentially no homework, lowest exam (5 total) grade is dropped. Did poorly on first exam but figured out how to study after and did better. Take notes on everything she says during lecture and study it thoroughly. Dont waste time on textbook reading and review questions at end of slides, just study lecture :)
First off, read the lower rating reviews with a grain of salt. Karen was not as bad as other students have made her out to be. While she is not the greatest professor I've ever had, she is certainly proficient enough to where if YOU are putting in enough work (studying, review, etc.), you can succeed. She provides the info, you just need listen.
her lectures aren't clear all of the time, she sort of rushes them. a lot of your grade depends on the exams which kinda sucks. isn't a covid friendly person either. she just really sucks a being a teacher and just expects us to understand EVERYTHING she says. the peer leaders didn't help as well.
She was not as bad as she was made out to be by some reviews, but she wasn't spectacular either. She covers everything on the tests in lectures, so don't even bother with buying the textbook. Passing this class means a lot of independent work (studying, reviewing, study sessions). She has a hard time taking criticism. I did learn a lot though.
Dr. Petersen is a mediocre lecturer and spends a lot of time rambling about things during lecture. Don't buy the textbook, you won't need it; everything that is said in lecture is what is on the test. Exams are multiple-choice and questions can be difficult, but doable if you take quality lecture notes. Bottom line: take notes & ask for help!
The class consisted of 4 unit exams, one final exam, and mini daily quizzes which aren't too difficult. You are able to drop one exam which helps. Definitely don't wait till the end of the quarter to go to her study sessions or office hours. Her slides mainly consist of pictures so you have to do extra work outside of class to understand concepts.
Bottom line, I would not take her class. She expects you to understand material she doesn't fully go over in class, so you have to do a lot of work outside of class to even stay above water. Worst outlined class structure I've had at UW by far. If you continuously study and review notes, I think you will be fine, but I'd stay away if I were you.
The name speaks for itself. She is rude to her students and TAs. Mediocre lecturer and expects you to know material on the exams beyond her lectures. The TAs are sweet, however the labs as a whole are disorganized and expect you to dissect without proper instruction. Material learned in class was interesting
Karen is not the best professor but she's fine. She's not the most knowledgable one but she explains lecture in an understandable way. Exams are not tough if you remember every word she says and TAKE NOTES. Sometimes have curves in exams. Participation is mandatory & need to do polls. Nice and caring prof. 95%=4.0. Not as hard as people say.
Dr. Petersen is a great professor, however, the course work/load can be extremely heavy. There are 5 exams and they are worth 80% of your grade. There are few to no other options to raise your grade if you do not do well on the exams and the lecture slides make no sense unless you re-watch the lecture. Wording such as "these do that," is not good.
This class is hard, but she tries to make it fun. Enthusiasm is her thing, during daily class graded by PollEverywhere. Everything she wants you to know she says during lecture, so good attendance is crucial. 5 Exams throughout the quarter so prepare to stay on top of course material.
No real "homework" as majority of grade is made up of tests and daily polling (attendance mandatory). Her PPTs don't have many words so you HAVE to really comprehend what she is saying during lecture. I don't think she was the greatest lecturer either and had to do a lot of work watching videos online. She did drop 2/5 exams so my grade was high.
I was scared to take this course bc of the reviews, but I had no choice bc I needed it. TBH karen is so kind! Go 2 the study sessions she hosts, they actually help. There are 5 exams, and the lowest grade is dropped, and 2 200-word reflections. No other hw. Graded in-class polls every day, so attendance is mandatory. MAKE FRIENDS IN THE CLASS!!
Her lectures consist mainly of graphics and stats rather than much info which is fine, she does talk quite fast though, and you'll most likely have to go back to lecture recordings to get good notes. Attendance is mandatory as she does multiple PollEv questions. She has 5 exams which you could drop 1/5 and sometimes are curved. Tests aren't too bad
Daily lectures and 5 PollEv questions during it for credit, lots of scores are dropped and at least 1 exam is dropped. 5 exams total including the non cumulative final. Attend lecture, make a study group, and use the key questions she gives you and complete them for each lecture. Never got the textbook or went to office hours, lecture is enough
No homework so what really mattered was just attending lecture and understanding what she was explaining in class. Tests were all multiple choice and I never got below an 85 on all 5 exams. Make sure you attend lecture because participation is counted through PollEv questions. All content could be learned from lecture, no outside material needed.
The exam will cover the knowledge that not include in the lecture.
Dr. Petersen was one of the best professors I've had. She is caring, extremely knowledgeable, and fair in her grading. Her study sessions were extremely helpful and I recommend it for anyone taking this class. Copy down everything she says in lecture.
I had to take this course as a requirement for admission to my major, but frankly I did not learn anything. Karen does not give good direction when it comes to preparing for exams. Everyday class is just lecture slides, mostly just pictures, where she rambles about the topic. She does not prepare you for the exam, so a lot of outside work to do.
The lectures are slide heavy!! In the beginning, you may feel like there's no correlation between them unless you've read the textbook in advance. As for the exams, we had them every other week and the final was. optional. They were also all multiple choice so it's definitely doable. As long as you put in the work, you'll be fine.
This class is very lecture heavy, and there are a lot of slides that she goes through per day. It's basically a lot of memorization, but it's doable. There are four midterms and one final, but she drops the lowest exam. She's so sweet and very passionate about what she's teaching, but just be ready for how much material is covered in this course.
Dr. Petersen is an excellent professor. Her lectures are fascinating and the labs are really interesting and fun. She works hard to get to know her students and clearly cares about everyone's learning. The class is a lot of work, so don't expect to just cruise by and 4.0. But it's easy to succeed and very enjoyable if you put the work in!
Really great professor!
Horrible if you don't have a heavy bio background. Didn't understand a word of her lectures. If you want to do well on the tests, rewatch all of the lectures and take notes - they have everything that's on the test. Got my test grades up from Cs to As by doing this but it'll take you like 15 hours/test - worth it though!
