Karen is a right to the point teacher. She has a lot of power point notes. no busy work. She is clear on what whe expects you to know for the test. Quizzes can be a bit difficult.

A great teacher, nice person, tests were difficult, but if you had a question she'd help you understand it. Very caring.

She teaches solely from a powerpoint - so you really don't need the book. MAKE FLASH CARDS FROM HER SLIDES AND YOU'LL PASS THE TEST, Labs questions suck if you are not on the main campus (i.e drawings instead of models) She is nice and will help you out if you need to miss a class. I liked her, but you totally have to study in this class!

A good teacher if you can learn off of power point. Tests are hard.Need to study a lot. She is a good-kind person.helpful when asked.

Took hybrid online course/on campus lab. Expectations are reasonable - if you are a detailed, meticulous student. Course covers a lot of information, so be prepared to spend many hours studying each week. Lab quizzes can be hard. . .tests not as much so, but still challenging. Plenty of extra credit opportunities are available.

I took Karen for 231 and 232. There is a lot of studying that has to be done if you want to do well, but she is very clear about what you need to know for the quizes, and the exams are based solely on her power point lectures. I found her to be quite accommodating a number of times, just don't slack off and you'll be fine.

Karen is accommodating - tells you what to expect on the test. Answers any and all questions. Allows for discussions in class about material being covered. Is available after classes for clarifying things. Is great in labs! If you cannot attend a lab...she will work it out with you to come in & has everything available to complete it.

Karen is hard, but she makes it clear what you need to know. FYI: don't ask too many questions. She will get annoyed. Also: Very ****, much more attention and friendliness is paid to men. Don't really even crack the book:everything you need to know is in her powerpoints. Know the slides, and you will do great.

Well of course the class is hard because the material is hard to learn in 10 weeks. I thought karen was a very good teacher. She gives you extra credit (which is rare in biology classes) and all you have to do is study the powerpoint slides to get a good grade. I took A&P with a different teacher for 232 and protiva is way better.

I think Karen is good teacher. Of course the class is very hard and she is not easy. But she is willing to answer questions that you have. I always have a lot of questions, but she didn't really get frustrated like the other person who rated her. Just study the powerpoint and should do fine in her class.

She know's her stuff and likes what she does. Some quick "how-to's" on getting a good grade here...SHOW UP, PAY ATTENTION, and MEMORIZE the powerpoints. She tells you what's going to be expected for the test, you just have to PAY ATTENTION. EVERY question on the test comes DIRECTLY from the powerpoints, so use them!

While intimidating at first, Karen is a very warm, helpful teacher when you're not scared anymore. She teaches directly off powerpoint- memorize those and you'll do great! She's very knowledgeable and throws in interesting tidbits of info in class. I really like her and will take her all year. Not too hard, either, if you study!!

If you think this teacher is hard or worthless you obviously haven't taken from Daniel Brouse at SOCC. This teacher deserves a much higher grade. If you study your butt off (it is A&P) and do all the assignments, labs and extra credit you should do fine. Not saying you will get an A... but you should pass. What A&P teacher gives you extra credit?!

I loved this coarse! A&P is definately a very difficult subject, but I would recommend taking it from Karen. You MUST come to class everyday, study the power point slides (over and over again) and do all the possible extra credit that is given!!! There is no reason to not be successful if you just spend that time to know the material. (232,233,234)

This instructor was tough but fair. She knew her stuff and used stories to try to relate the topic and make it easier for us to remember. She was very helpful. I will take BI 233 from this instructor and would recommend her highly.

I looked on this site to help me pick an instructore, but had to pick Karen because it fit in my schedule. Boy am I glad I did, Karen is a great instructor. This class is very tough and Karen organizes the material in an easy way to follow. Don't get me wrong, it's not an easy A, you have to do the work and then some, but Karen will help you.

A&P is a tough class & will definitely need a lot of time to study. Karen will help you, but only if you ask her. She does read off her power points, so try to memorize them & it will help you out a lot when it comes to test time. She lets you know ahead of time on what's on the test & she also offers plenty of extra credit opportunities.

This is a tough class. A lot of material to cover. She was very helpful and understanding. Doesn't set you up for failure. This class is work though. You have to study to pass, no way around it. She tests off of power points and gives hints to essays. Very approachable professor. Just between lab quizzes and exams its an intense class.

Dr. Karen made anatomy more bearable. Yes, it is a hard class. But if you do all of the work and study you can get a good grade.

I took Karen this term for BI231 on a Saturday. It is a tough class, but she makes sure you pass. She gives extra credit to help you pass. Listen in class, she'll point out essay questions and pointers for test. Take her, you won't regret it!

I had Karen for saturday classes, I would't say she's the best, but she did answer questions and she does offer extra credit. Take advantage of the open lab and STUDY! Her exams are tough but so is A&P. Reading the text book and doing extra credit are what gets me a good grade in her class. I would recommend finding study partners to help as well.

I took her online class and it was very good. Her expectation was reasonable and gave us plenty of extra points. She is also very caring and kind. I learned many things from this class. I would take her class again. :)

Taking her A&P hybrid series. I like her style and set up. However, this hybrid version heavily relies on self discipline and independent study to teach yourself. I will finish the series with her, and recommend it for anyone needing to take it that doesn't like sitting through a lecture or has limited time. But be ready for no life!

I found Karen very helpful with questions regarding the class. Took her hybrid 231 and 232 so far, and will continue for her 233 in the fall. A&P is difficult, regardless of the teacher. Its either you are a dedicated individual, ready to put in the work to get an A or you will struggle and get a lower grade. Dedication and persistence!

Gives lecture w/ skeleton power pts. Exams based off of lecture so if you don't go you won't pass. No study guide but lecture notes split up between the 3 tests. sometimes gives info on specific test Q's during lecture. Class is hard no matter who you take it with but she did a good job helping & explaining. will continue series with her for sure!

Her lectures were clear, and she tried to make sure her students knew what to study for the tests. She tried to not have lecture exams too close to lab quizzes. She took time to teach each subject and didn't mind moving tests to make sure her students received all the information.

Dr. Protiva is pretty forgiving on things and can be worked with if something comes up. I took her hybrid class and loved it. I see on here people lamenting about her exams and quizzes. They aren't that hard. The lab quizzes are strictly over the previous lab and the exam is strictly over the homework and powerpoint. There is one assignment a week.

I think the harsh reviews are a bit extreme. Yes, this a difficult class, and, yes, she does expect students to work on their own without having their hands held. However, students are given every opportunity to be successful, but, ultimately, she excepts everyone to be responsible adults and stay on top of their assignments and studies.

I've taken Karen for the whole Anatomy Sequence, in fact I retook two of the classes with her as well, one of the times it was the accelerated 5 week term which I loved. I am very pleased with her teaching style & I love that she isn't heavy on HW, which I think is great because it allows you to focus on studying the lecture. Fast & fair grader.

I took Jane Rogers and Joseph Bean for 231 and 232, so this was my first time with Karen, and I loved it. Its hard a lot of studying. I feel like thats all I did everyday was study. Her exams are based off her lecture powerpoints. I liked that she would take off questions that everyone got wrong on the exam. Overall I really liked her! She was fair

If you attend the lectures, complete the assignments, and spend a couple hours each day reviewing you will do fine. Dr. Karen offers extra credit and is extremely open and helpful during office hours. She is very fair in grading -- she removes test questions failed by most students. Do not expect A+P to be as easy as most 200 level courses.

She is a caring teacher, I reached out to her for extra help and she was caring and helpful I had a good experience with her. She does count a huge portion of your grades on test which i don't like, but she does care if you put forth effort.

Before taking this class with Karen, I thought it was going to be horrible and I wouldn't be able to pass. I ended up receiving a high B . The only thing I didn't enjoy was that she required everyone to submit a question of that weeks lecture material and we had to answer all of them for only a few points. Very time consuming.

Initially, I was frustrated but is possible to adapt to this course design. Success will depend on your adaptability. Though I have faltered many times (I am not a good student), I have learned. We are here to receive an education and grow. Dr. Protiva gives her students an education, she will always have my utmost respect and gratitude.

I recommend taking BI232 with Dr. Protiva as you will become more proficient in human anatomy and physiology if you follow her course design. It works, it is challenging but possible. If you are trying to skate by without learning and understanding the material, this course is not for you. If you want to earn a honest grade, take this course.
