This class is really easy to understand if you go to class. If you don't go to class, you can read the notes right out of the book and be fine. She is really good about clarifying everything. I'm a Philosophy and History major and I did just fine.
This is the best, most organized class ever. Karen was ill for the last few weeks of our class so hopefully she's doing well now because she's an excellent professor.
She was a really good professor. Got kind of boring sometimes, but the tests were easy.

This teacher was very easy as long as a complete set of notes was taken...easy to understand!
Kind of easy, a lot like high school biology, lots of notes though, that's pretty much all you do in class and she doesn't take attendance, so just read the book
very simple class. Good teacher. I enjoyed umans and other animals
She's a really nice person... but isn't always willing to help you with problems outside of class. I tried to get help more than once and was more or less ignored. There is a ton of material to go over for each test and a lot of the questions she writes are trick questions. the material for the class itself isn't that difficult, but the way it is presented is sometimes confusing.
She is really a pretty good teacher. Her lectures all come from the book, and she explains everything really clearly. I like her class a lot.

This class is hard if you don't study for a whole week before a test.
This is a hard class. The tests are difficult- there is so much information that is covered, and the questions are tricky. She is a nice teacher, but I think she teaches this class at a higher level than it should be.
She is a good professor, teaches right out of the book. If you attend class and read the book, you will do fine on the tests. Most find it hard because they refuse to go to class. But seriously, just take notes and you will be great, I really liked her.
The lectures for this class are almost pointless, she talks but comes test time she always says that we are responsible for what the book says and not what she says, then why even go to class? She can be very unclear, lots of info to remember for the class/tests. However she does curve most all the tests so that gives some comfort.
She is very clear on what needs to be studied and what material will be on the test. If you read and go to class you are golden. If you don't go to class and don't read....then the tests are hard. common sense
Easiest class ever. I skipped class and just read my book (or really, filled in the blanks on the study guide) and finished the midterm in less than 10 minutes with 90% correct. Strictly tests (the lowest one is dropped) no useless research assingments or papers to be written and waste my time. If only every class at CSU could be like this
She is a very knowledgeable instructor and she is pretty flexible with grading and class work. Her lectures are well organized and she is very prompt with posting notes and grades online. I would highly recommend her for any Biology class.
Great professor. Dr. Raines presents a logical and educational course. She is well organized, knowledgeable and easy to understand. I am not a bio major, but Dr. Raines deserves credit for being a good professor.
Is a decent professor, though gives unclear study guides and expects you to memorize about 6 chapters' worth of material for each test. Does not curve grades as often as other comments here would have you believe. Is indeed prompt with posting notes/grades/answer keys, etc. online.
It is pointless to go to class. All you need to do is read the book. She tests you over 6 or 7 chapters at a time and expects a lot.
If you're looking for an easy science class, this is it. Either read the book, or go to class; both aren't necessary. Otherwise, Professor Raines is prepared, a prompt grader, and knowledeable. She is fair and curves the tests amply. She also seems interested in what she is teaching, which is a bonus. Overall, easy class with a decent professor.
Great professor who knows her stuff. Willing to help explain things to anyone that has questions. This class specifically requires a lot of studying for a 100 level though. But she's nice and enjoys teaching it, so I can manage. Prospective students: If she's giving you an example that's not on the slides, WRITE IT DOWN. Go to class/take notes!
She defiantly knows her stuff. She is a very detailed professor and makes sure you have what you need for the tests and quizzes. I would not recommend missing this class due to the amount of notes that are taken.
Karen is a HORRIBLE teacher. She is difficult to listen to and goes way too into depth on the information for a 100 level science course. I took her class because of her rating on this site and all of them were false. I am a good student but struggle in her class. Her tests are hard and nothing that is on the study guide is on the test
Professor Raines seems to be a nice person but she is an awful teacher. I have no doubt that she knows her stuff but Eyore is more interesting than this woman. Despite my urge to constantly slap myself in the face during class to stay awake, and to keep myself from going insane from her accent, I recommend going to class, because she does cover a lot of information. If you wanted you could probably read the book and only show up for exams, but it's a helpful review. Also, do purchase iconnect!
For those complaining about her accent, she can't control it. It's natural. Who cares? She's very informative and her study guides are just a guideline to what may be covered in the exams, not everything but mostly everything on the test was on the study guide. Read the textbook, it'll help.
She teaches nothing that is on the test this is way for hard to a 100 level class
She is a wonderful professor! Not all just notes, but she shows a lot of videos as well! If you use the study guides, and go to class you should do pretty well. She is very smart, and can answer any of your questions! Loved her!
Horrible teacher! Doesnt teach what is on the tests and her study guides are completely pointless. DO NOT take any of her classes.
Dr. Raines is a good professor. The class requires effort, but it's not unreasonable for a bio class that has to cover a lot to prepare students for the next level. She gets grades posted very quickly. Also, she's very willing to answer questions at any time.
This is not a 101 course by any stretch of the imagination.
The content of this class is all about memorization of terms and organisms, but Karen really breaks everything down as much as possible to make it easier to remember. Even if you aren't interested in the course content she makes the content relevant, fun, and interesting as possible. I really enjoyed this class and her teaching style.
She idefinitely knows what she is talking about but sometimes it's hard for her to put in a way for students to understand. Sometimes she just reads from her power point slides. Although she is also very willing to help you understand if you go to her office hours. Also, sometimes she put questions on the test that weren't on the study guide.
The amount of work for a 100 level class was substantial. The material was extremely difficult for a freshman biology class.
Hard class but if you study and have good background in bio you will do okay, STUDY for the tests.
Nice teacher, wants everyone to pass but extremely hard tests. Doesn't take attendance so hard to go to class. Posts all the notes on line. Only points from the class comes from quizzes and tests. Grades on curve and drops lowest test score. Don't be fooled though, those tests are harder than expected.
Her tests are hard but get the online book! This will save your life, the quizzes you get with the online book are the EXACT same questions you'll see on the test. Even if you get the regular book go to the website that is listed in there that has some practice questions that are pretty similar and some are even the same as the tests.
I love not only Karen but the class! Yes the tests are tough but my advice is to get the online etext or connect plus biology. The online book comes with quizzes that will SAVE your life. They prepare you for questions on the test! Lowest test is dropped, no papers. Overall not a hard course if you study well!
There are 3 online quizzes. The tests are tough and require a lot of studying. Get the online text book with practice tests. Top-hat questions in class for a participation grade.
Biology in general is hard if you don't have a knack for it but she is really good at explaining things. She also is very open to working with you after class to make sure that you get it.
I don't know why she isn't rated higher. I took her class last semester and I was amazed with her. She is amazingly intelligent. She knows the answer to EVERYTHING, ask her anything. In the very small chance that she doesn't, she will research it and get back to you on it. If you plan on an easy A or skipping all of the lectures, don't take it.
Hard class because I'm not good at science
Karen Raines is one of my favorite professors this semester. She is very understanding and if you have something in your life going on that's making school hard for you just talk to her at office hours and she is very helpful. The tests are somewhat difficult but study the quizzes you take for the tests.
Difficult 100 level class - Her lectures are long and boring, when I went I fell asleep so I stopped going. Uses Tophat for points but I only had a 27% answering attendance and she gave me a 100. Tests are difficult as they cover SO MUCH info, the online text book will save your grade. I promise. BUY IT.
This class should not be a 100 level class. Extremely long lectures, and the topics cover so many different subjects it's hard to remember this is all for the same class. The tests were brutal the first couple of times (studying for 13 hours prior and only getting a high C with the curve). Then I decided to buy the online textbook,it saved my life.
I am not good at science and my advisor told me to take this class. This was easily my hardest class of the semester. I would study for a week straight, meet with Professor Raines and go to TILT for help and still get a D on the exams. I do not recommend this class unless you understand biology on your own.
She is extremely hard to follow and she moves at a speed someone would expect of a 300 level class. Covers way too much material in lecture to remember and her exams are extremely difficult. For example, on many Iclicker questions the responses are divided almost evenly. Even though that should be a sign something isn't clear, she continues anyway
A great teacher who is not just nice, but makes jokes and gives multiple choice tests!
I didn't buy the textbook and I'm not the best at biology, and I received an 85%. Because I don't like biology, the lectures seemed to drag on. It was not a bad class, and Professor Raines was very nice and knowledgeable.
she definitely knows the material but moves fast and there is a lot of information. Be ready for lots of notes and studying, but it is expected because it is biology.
Professor Raines is an excellent teacher don't get me wrong, but this isn't a easy class. While she clearly knows the topics extremely well, lectures tend to move fast and drag on forever. The tests are not that hard, but you absolutely have to study, at least a week in advance. My advice create a study group and stay committed to working together.
You can tell she really knows her stuff and has a love for biology. Easy class. Karen is a phenomenal lecturer.
Online quizzes! Must go to class for clicker participation. Super nice and really wants to help you. Uses online textbook with online test questions. You get to keep your tests after you take them. THE TESTS ARE MULTIPLE CHOICE!!!!! Even if you aren't a bio major still a great class. Covers a lot of topics.
Professor Raines most definitely knows what she's talking about! However her classes are just lectures and she packs so much information into each class I have no idea how it's not an advanced bio class. Doesn't really go over information more than once so it's important to re-read notes or read the textbook. Tests are ridiculously hard.
Don't take this class unless you're ready to go to class everyday. The tests are super heavy, make sure to study hard and look at the tests on like koofers for references because she reuses questions
Class is boring but it gets better as the semester goes on. Better option than LIFE102 though. Her voice is super annoying but you'll get used to it. The learnsmarts and iclickers are only worth 1 point each but they add up. If you can get your hands on the tests from previous semesters (check quizlet) tests become a lot easier.
The lectures are boring and hard to pay attention to as a non major. However, this is the easiest biology class offered. When studying for exams, study the vocabulary from each section.
Blew my mind that this was a 101 class. I drowned in material and it was extremely difficult trying to remember everything that was taught for the exams simply because there was just so much! Dr Raines also doesn't offer extra credit. If you're looking for an easy science aucc then steer clear from this course!
I'm a journalism major, and I took this class just to receive my science credit. This class may be a 101 level, but it was incredibly difficult. She knew everything about everything but talked for an hour and 15 minutes straight. It was INFORMATION OVERLOAD. PLus, she likes to call students out for browsing the internet or checking their phones.
Karen was a great professor and she knew almost everything about the material, but there was just SO MUCH material. I am a music therapy major and had to take this class along with the lab, and it was so hard. There was a lot of reading as well as quizzes due every week and very long tests.
Takes a boring subject and makes it interesting. I'm amazed at how much she knows. I don't think anyone has asked a question that she doesn't know the answer to. A lot of memorization, but tests are relatively easy. Not very much homework.
She is very interested with the topic and makes it interesting for someone like me who isn't inclined to sciences. She takes time to answer questions in class, and makes up for the time lost and the subjects not taught by just taking them off the exams. Book is definitely used.
lecture lecture lecture. that is all. tests are ridiculous and the study guides don't help. she asks the stupidest questions on the test.
If you are taking the BZ 101 class it is not hard and the only thing that she grades you on are the chapter quizzes from the online textbook and the test. If you don't go to class however you will miss a lot of information that she goes in depth about.
There are 4 tests in this course and they are all worth 120 points. The only other points that you can even receive in this class are 3 points per quiz and there are about 20 quizzes and 20 iclicker points. If you are not a good test taker, I do not recommend taking this class
There is a lot of material for this class. A LOT. Taking the lab helped me learn a lot of it by breaking it down more. The tests were long, but find quizlets of old exams and that will help a lot. She reuses a lot of test questions. After the tests she lets you take them back with you so you can use them to study for the cumulative final
Incredibly knowledgeable about the subject that she teaches, however the lectures that she gives in class are largely unhelpful on exams. Massive amount of vocab and content you need to memorize mostly from the textbook. Unreasonable expectations of work and knowledge for a level 100 elective.
Professor Raines really loves the subject. She's very knowledgeable, funny, and tries to keep students engaged. Lectures are for clicker credit, but you can either not go and just read the textbook and her slides, or you can go to lecture and just do the online modules based on her lecture slides (mostly). You get out what you put in.
Easiest biology course. Karen is extremely knowledgeable and nice. Her exams are easy as long as you study, attend lecture, and do the homework assignments. The course is heavily dependent on lecture and chapters from the textbook. She does iClickers each day so make sure you go for easy points since the only other grades are exams and homework.
Karen is well educated on the subject she teaches. As long as you consistently go to class, you can pass. Most of the clicker questions and material come directly from tests, and she will explain where to find test material that isn't taught in class. Enthusiastic and thorough when explaining questions, but every class is a PowerPoint lecture.
Karen is really nice and wants to help her students. Recommend going to class for iClicker points and points add up.
Professor Raines lectures for a majority of the class in a very monotoned voice making it difficult to pay attention. You MUST GO TO CLASS as there are Iclicker questions.
You need to go to 70% of classes for full iClicker credit. There's a lot of content to memorize. Final grade is based on weekly/biweekly online assignments, 3 exams, participation, and the final. She really likes Kahoots, which are hilarious with 300 people.
First, read the book and do the LearnSmart because it'll give you easy points. Second, I recommend just copying the PPTs into a document and adding any points she gives in class(they usually don't make it to the exam though). Finally, before the exam, do the study guide. It helps a TON. BUT this is a class for BIO MAJORS.
Had her for an 8 week online summer class. You have 3-4 chapters, 3-4 quizzes, 2-3 discussions and 1-2 assignments. Every 2 weeks you have an exam, all of which are cumulative. 2nd exam literally covered 7 chapters with a 140 long response question exam review. I understand wanting your students to learn but she is unrealistic and overzealous.
This class is unrealistic for an online course. The video lectures are WAY too information heavy and it's clearly not structured as a first time biology course. Essentially bombards you with scientific terms and info then proctor tests the crap out of you without the ability to use notes or the book. Great course if you have an eidetic memory.
I took this class thinking it would be a completely different subject matter. The description does not match the class-- dont be fooled, this is a basic biology course. But, it's easy enough with some studying and she curves the exams. Not a bad choice if you need a bio credit
For a Freshman class this is unbelievably difficult. As a Senior, I have all A's and for some reason i'm struggling to get a C in this course. It is a mix of Anatomy, Biology, Chemistry and Genetics. No reason anyone should have to take this course if not a science Major. Tests are 120pts and HWs are 3pts. Not an easy grade. Avoid at ALL COSTS!!!!!
I am a Freshman, and this class is a complete other language. Raines literally only does lectures all week, and you're expected to understand everything she is saying. I have gotten straight A's all through high school and have a D in this class. Avoid taking this class if you are undeclared (which is the position I'm in right now).
she's fine. but when I reached out after missing an exam for being in the ER I was meet with 3 rude emails and no help. I emailed a note excusing me asking to take it later and got a response of " a doctors note does not exempt you from an exam And if you look again at your note-the word.- End of discussion. over iv had multiple rude experiences
Keys to passing: Take the lab inconcurrent with the lecture. It'll make all the big words she uses waay easier to understand. Skim through the homeworks, they're unlimited tries, easy points. Do the practice exams. They are IDENTICAL to the exams and final exam. Easy class if you sit in front and pay attention. She doesn't like excuses, so do right
4 exams throughout the course. Relatively easy if you go to class and do the homework
Lots of homework material. boring and material heavy lectures. Get ready to study all the time for this class
Most boring lectures Ive ever had to sit through. She makes you do homework on the online textbook before every class so do not miss those. Whenever I tried to talk to her about absences or missing assignments that I had legitimate excuses for she was stand off-ish and rude. No such thing as an excused absence in her eyes and no make up work.
She knows her stuff and stays on track.
This class was such a major challenge. I did IB Biology HL and thought this class was more challenging than that! She's not very helpful, run like a high school class, & you get called out in front of everyone even if you're asking for help from a partner. Avoid this class if you can, especially if you're undeclared. Too hard for a level 100 class.
Make sure you do the test reviews! The first test I didn't do the review and did bad, but the following tests I made sure I did the reviews and I did so much better. There was homework every week and it was only 3 points so it's important to do well on the tests.
I never payed attention in lectures and when I did, it was a foreign language. I stopped doing the homework towards the end cause it takes so long. Got a C+ cause I memorized the practice tests which are identical to the actual tests. If you are down to memorize 3 tests, you will pass.
As long as you do the online homework and get your clicker points, you're set for most of the class. Not hard, just takes a bit of time. For exams, DO THE PRACTICE EXAMs, they're mostly the same as the exam and are more helpful to your exam grade than probably anything else.
Good teacher grades exams on a curve, allows you to keep the exam questions, grades participation on random clicker polls.
I'm not a bio major, and I don't like bio, but I liked this class. I definitely worked too hard in this class, because I took lots of notes on the online textbook, so you don't need to do that (it helps so much with BZ 111 though). Karen is a great lecturer! You will learn so much from this class if you take good notes and attend her lectures.
Raines teaches a fairly rough course but makes the information pretty clear to understand. Pretty harsh on missed/late assignments, but she states this from the beginning. Do the work (which there's a lot of), ask questions, and study hard for tests.
A really solid professor who cares for her students and gives fair grades.
The only participation needed was for the 3/4 iclicker questions at the end of the lecture, but they were easy to find in the provided notes. There is a lot of reading, but exams were noncumulative so it was a manageable workload. Prof. Raines was very understanding during the pandemic and was able to be somewhat flexible with her students.
Relies on SmartBook assignments and TAs to teach the material, but if you do the SmartBook assignments then you pass the tests.
i took her class fall of 2020 and it was hybrid so we had the option to go to lecture or not and I did not attend a single lecture. lecture just reiterated the homework material, the homework was two smartbooks a week and if you just do those homeworks you just get it. iclickers were annoying but get a solid gc going for the class and its easy
Karen Raines seems to breeze through the more difficult material through the lecture videos and in class lectures about random sections of the chapters. You are responsible for teaching yourself the majority of the information. It seems as if she expects you to already know difficult terminology that is new to most.
I took BZ 110 fall of 2020 and it wasn't bad. Its a ton of homework but its manageable. As for the prof, Karen Raines isn't bad at all. The lectures are a good guiding point for the textbook readings (WHICH ARE VITAL). Exams weren't hard. Just read the textbook and do the Iclickers and you will be fine.
I took Biology with Professor Raines and it was a great experience. This is a lecture class, but she explains everything very well and the homework assignments also help a lot with understanding the material. She genuinely cares if you are having trouble with something or need her help. Love her so much omg. Great voice too.
Was a great intro class. If you're a science major, you'll love this class with Dr. Raines. She is very knowledgeable and tentative to your learning the material. I would highly recommend doing the homework and smart book questions in a timely manner.
Does not feel like an introductory biology course with lots of heavy reading. Homework and test prep through Smartbook can be excessive (hours to complete). Plan to set aside extra time for this course.
You have to read two chapters a week and do and extensive number of questions on them. If you don't get a question right, you have you can't finish the assignment. She doesn't do a very good job of explaining content in lectures. Her exam "study guides" have 4+ pages of questions and not all of the content needed for the exam will be on there.
As long as you do the readings and take notes you should get an A. But Karen Raines is probably the MOST unapproachable professor I've ever encountered. She never directly answers your questions and often makes you feel stupid for not knowing the answer. She provides little to no feedback on homework other than "wrong" or "incorrect".
BZ 110 is supposed to be a "principles" of Animal Biology. However, it is so in-depth that it should be a 300 to 400-level class. The weekly SmartBook HW are far too long and the exams are closed note and proctored for some reason. Raines should reassess the content for this course as well as rethink exams being closed-book due to the content.
She was one of the worst teachers I have taken. Treats you like your still in high school and expects you should know all the content already. There is so much content she goes over and lots of homework. The exams are hard, and she just says the same thing as the book does. This class will be a challenge if you are not a Bio major.
Karen is a decent teacher but the class is super lecture heavy, and the reading is ridiculous. Exams are okay if you study for them. She didnt seem to teach this like an intro course, as she didnt spend much time explaining the harder subjects. Overall she is a good prof.
Coming from a non-science major, this class wasn't bad at all. I barely went to the class and was able to pass with a pretty good grades. She posts the lectures the night before and the weekly assignments aren't too long or hard, as long as you skim through it the book. The tests are closed note but if you do the assignments, they aren't too hard.
This is not an easy course, but that's expected given that there's a LOT of material. However, Dr. Raines is organized and knowledgeable. Attend the lectures for exam answers. The practice exams/study guides are useful, even if they're long. The homeworks take a lot of time. Take BZ111 concurrently if possible. Go to LA help sessions if struggling.
This professor is the most unapproachable professor ever. She doesnt tell u what u did to get the answer wrong she just says "wrong" or "no". Very rude in her commentary. also hours and hours of connect assignments EVERY WEEK. ranging from 5-6 chapters and 40-80 questions a chapter for only 5 points. unrealistic expectations. do not take her class.
Karen is right. She is so rude towards her students and has an undoable workload for a required class. She requires connect assignments that are worth only 5 points but can have up to 84 concepts. Not questions...concepts. Worst professor I've ever had don't take her class. Save the time and do Life 102 or something
Absurd workload with minimal helpful instruction during class lectures.
Never experienced a worse instructor than Karen Raines. This is a REQUIRED class that takes HOURS of assignments that she didn't create, proctored exams with information that was never covered in the reading, worthless discussion posts, and convoluted assignments that haven't been updated since she started teaching about 70 years ago. DO NOT TAKE!
This class was RUSHED. You have to learn so many things within one exam period to the next. Head hurt constantly. Homework heavy too, so space it out. If you're not taking too many homework-heavy courses, this will straighten that out. She seems very kind to the students though!
For a 100 level course, a lot of work. Not necessarily hard content and easy to pass if you try, but be prepared to have to attend every class because some sort of quiz or assignment is due at the end just about every day. Lots of tests as well, 6 of them, with lots to study, but the answers are easy if you study the practice exams.
The lectures for this class did not cover a lot, so most of the information I got was from the smartbooks, except lectures are important for the quizzes. The tests were fairly easy if you study and there are occasional short answer assignments. Karen knew a lot about what she talked about but the class seemed random.
Proffesor Raines is very knowledgeable. Her lectures are okay. The tests are hard but if you do the review exams you will do well. I do not like the textbook assignments because they take up a lot of time and are hard to understand.
If you get Professor Karen Raines, do everything you can to get out of her class. This class is very tough and she does not go over everything in lectures that are going to be on tests. This course requires going to all the study sessions outside of class, but if you have a class during the time of the study session, well you're on your own.
I took Karen Raines class ages ago. Typical big lecture freshmen course. 300 kids in a big lecture hall. 4 exams. Drop the lowest one. This ain't highschool biology and you will need to show up to class, take notes, and study. Not just the night before the exams. If you get As on the first 3 exams, you can skip the last month entirely which is nice
I actually really enjoyed Raines and I was not expecting to. The class has a lot of homework but overall I felt like by completing the homework was enough to secure a good grade in the class. Karen definitely is knowledgable and passionate about her content, but at times I think she might forget a lot of people in the class are taking this as AUCC
bz101 is so hard for no reason. so much work for so few points, 2-3hr assignments 1-2 times a week for 5 points. the amount of time put in was not worth it. reviews will be 6-10 hrs on smart book quizzes. hated it
Pretty good class, just had to take a bunch of notes, but the prof taught well.
The exams are super easy if you do the practice exams, the assignments in class are important because they are on the exams. I didn't pay much attention in class but it was fun.
The workload in this class is manageable, but it can be a lot of info all at once. GO TO THE REVIEW EXAMS. Also, do the practice exams and keep your previous tests. If you do these three things, you'll do fine in the class. Just make sure you review the notes she posts on canvas for videos, cause they are essential for quizzes and tests.
I didn't mind Karen at all. She was a pretty good teacher. The only thing that really blowed about this class was the McGraw assignments every few days that were worth 5 points. Didn't seem worth it to me since the assignment took 2 hours long. Study hard for the exams.
(Summer session) I can not believe how hard this class is and still don't understand why it's required for so many non-science majors. I used to love Biology and this class made me despise it. Reading takes about 1-2 hours however the homework takes 4-6 hours and only worth 5 points. Tests were extremely hard for an AUCC. Never take this class!!!!
There is lots of information covered in this class. But I was able to get As on all my exams by going to the sessions hosted by the TAs. they know whats on the test and focus really heavily on only whats on the test. Honestly those sessions were my only form of studying.
Ridiculous expectations for a 100 level aucc-- exams are soley taken from mcgraw hill assignments but she doesn't narrow down the content at all. Review guide consisted of 200 concepts for a 60 question exam. You are basically teaching yourself! 6 weeks into the semester and Im already fed up with the class.
such unreal expectations of a intro to bio class. you end up teaching yourself with an overwhelming amount of homework
Expected large amounts of reading and reading assignments for content that would generally not be on the tests. I attended every other class because that's when there were quizzes, otherwise, I was better off just studying for the class in the library. The tests are really just a test of memory from big practice exams. Avoid if possible.
So the homework takes a while but its not hard. You can use quizlets and stuff if you need it done quickly. Her lectures arent taught great however shes pretty nice and will work with you. Tests arent that bad but GO TO THE REVIEW SESSIONS + do practice exams. They're a saving grace and will show you everything thats on the test very useful.
Dr. Raines was an okay teacher, she definitely knows what she's talking about. The class I found pretty easy if you put effort in. I liked the LA study sessions because they were so helpful. She literally gives them the test to help us study from so the review sessions before tests were pretty much my only form of studying other than the HW.
biology is not my strength but this class wasn't bad at all. the smartbook quizzes got a little tiring but they did help a lot for the exams and she also gave out study guides. your lowest exam score gets dropped and as long as you attend class you won't fail.
Karen Raines was the only difficult professor I had my freshmen year. Mc-Graw hill is a complete joke, 50 concepts which is really 100, only worth 5 points. Her exam study guides are useless and time consuming. Tests had no correlation with your homework. Looking for a biology class? Look somewhere else you will suffer.
This course relies heavily on the textbook. If you really paid attention during the HW then the lecture was all review. There were four tests before the final, but we were allowed to take them home after and see what we got wrong. Half of the questions on the final were from the past tests. Lots of work but easy if you attend lectures and study.
I feel like I mostly learned from the textbook with this class. The class was set up in a nice way where she curved our tests, which was super nice (and necessary). The tests were hard because no matter how much I studied I felt like I had never even heard of half the stuff on each test. She seemed nice though so she would probably give you help.
I don't know whether or not her in-person classes are better, but I wouldn't recommend taking this class online... There are no lectures, and the exams include material that the textbook doesn't cover.
It was online, so not really sure how she is, but the class had a ton of work. I low-key procrastinated, so that part's on me, but still quite a bit of reading/info. Not much teaching, as the lectures were basic review of the text.
This class was a real challenge, but Unstuck AI helped me stay on top of the material. The tests were tough, but the textbook and professor's guidance were useful. With dedication, I managed to get a good grade.
